The current study aimed to investigate whether there is a relationship between emotional intelligence (EI), functional capacity, fatigue, cognitive function, and quality of life (QoL) in HD patients and to assess the effect of a 9-month intradialytic exercise training program on EI levels. Seventy-eight dialysis patients (50 M/28 F, 60.6 ± 17.2 years) participated in the cross-sectional study. Afterward, a subgroup of 18 patients (15 M/3 F, 56.7 ± 12.3 years) completed a 9-month supervised intradialytic exercise training program (three times weekly). EI was assessed by the Schutte Self Report Emotional Intelligence Test (SSEIT) and the Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale (WLEIS). Functional capacity was assessed by a battery of tests. Sleep quality, depression levels, and daily sleepiness were assessed via validated questionnaires. All assessments were carried out before and after the intervention. A significant positive correlation was found between the WLEIS scores and the physical component summary of the QoL questionnaire. In contrast, the WLEIS scores were negatively associated with general and physical fatigue. The SSEIT scores were positively associated with cognitive function. After nine months of exercise training, only the group with low WLEIS scores improved their EI score significantly compared to the baseline values (98.7 ± 7.0 vs. 73.0 ± 4.0, p = 0.020), while no changes were observed in the medium or high EI groups. In conclusion, patients with higher levels of EI showed increased quality of life and lower levels of fatigue. Background and Aims: Axonal forms of Charcot‐Marie‐Tooth disease (CMT) are classified as CMT2, distal hereditary motor neuropathy (dHMN) or hereditary sensory neuropathy (HSN) and can be caused by mutations in over 100 genes. We presently aimed to investigate for the first time the genetic landscape of axonal CMT in the Greek population. Methods: Sixty index patients with CMT2, dHMN or HSN were screened by a combination of Sanger sequencing (GJB1) and next‐generation sequencing custom‐made gene panel covering 24 commonly mutated genes in axonal CMT. Results: Overall, 20 variants classified as pathogenic or likely pathogenic were identified in heterozygous state in 20 index cases, representing 33.3% of the cohort. Of these, 14 were known pathogenic/likely pathogenic and six were designated as such according to ACMG classification, after in silico evaluation, testing for familial segregation and further literature review. The most frequently involved genes were GJB1 (11.7%), MPZ (5%) and MFN2 (5%), followed by DNM2 (3.3%) and LRSAM1 (3.3%). Single cases were identified with mutations in BSCL2, HSPB1 and GDAP1. Interpretation: A wide phenotypic variability in terms of severity and age of onset was noted. Given the limited number of genes tested, the diagnostic yield of the present panel compares favourably with studies in other European populations. Our study delineates the genetic and phenotypic variability of inherited axonal neuropathies in the Greek population and contributes to the pathogenicity characterization of further variants linked to axonal neuropathies. Aim: To compare the diagnostic parameters of electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) via ZedScan, a device that measures spectra to differentiate between normal and abnormal cervical tissues, when used as an adjunct to colposcopies in the diagnosis of HSILs/CIN2+ in Greek women with abnormal referral cytology toward colposcopy alone and HPV mRNA‐testing. Methods: This study analyzed 86 women, patients of the Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology Clinic of 2nd Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki at Hippokration General Hospital, between January 2022 and September 2022. During the visits, women were subjected to cytology, colposcopy alone and then with EIS/ZedScan and histological sampling. Results: Common use of colposcopies and EIS/ZedScan allowed detecting an additional 14 cases of CIN2+ (16.2%) that colposcopy alone failed to report. EIS enhanced the sensitivity of colposcopy from 80.65% to 100% equal with that of HPV‐mRNA test while retaining a high specificity (94.74%) which is much higher than specificity of HPV mRNA‐testing (65.45%). EIS‐assisted colposcopy had the highest value combination of positive and negative predictive values (96.15% and 100%) compared to colposcopy alone (100% and 75%) and HPV mRNA‐testing (72.46% and 100%). Conclusions: Colposcopies performed with EIS/ZedScan demonstrated effectiveness in the diagnosing of CIN2+ leading to a significant increase in the number of CIN2+ that would have been missed if only colposcopy was applied especially in women with LSIL referral cytology. EIS/ZedScan seems to possess the ideal diagnostic threshold for sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values for CIN2+ compared to colposcopy alone and HPV mRNA‐testing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The aim of this study was to contribute to the characterization of Crocus taxa using morphological, phytochemical and genetic analysis. The styles of C. cartwrightianus , C. oreocreticus and C. laevigatus, collected in the island of Crete were compared to those of C. sativus cultivated at the region of Western Macedonia (Greece). Phytochemical analysis was done using GC–MS and HPLC methods, while ISSR markers were used for their genetic characterization. Safranal was the major volatile component of the styles of C. sativus , 4-hydroxy-2,6,6-trimethyl-1-cyclohexene-1-carboxaldehyde of C. cartwrightianus and C. oreocreticus , and isophorone of C. laevigatus. C. sativus had the highest content of crocins and picrocrocin, while C. laevigatus the lowest (only 5% of C. sativus' quantity) and negligible amount of picrocrocin. According to both the genetic and the chemical analysis, C. cartwrightianus is more related to C. oreocreticus, while C. sativus and C. laevigatus are more distinct. Concordance between the two different types of data was also confirmed by the Mantel test (r = 0.932, P =.68). This is the first thorough screening of secondary metabolites (volatile and non-volatile) and also genetic and morphological characters of wild Crocus styles simultaneously, that contributes to the identification and valorisation of genotypes with similar to C. sativus traits which may be introduced as new cultivars through breeding. A natural iron bearing omphacite with composition Ca Na Mg Al Fe FeTi Mn Si O from Syros, Greece, has been investigated by Mössbauer spectroscopy. The interpretation of the spectra is based on electronic structure calculations in the local spin density approximation. The calculations emphasize that large clusters, extending beyond the second coordination sphere of iron, are necessary for a reliable description. As suggested by the electronic structure calculations, different environments around the Fe octahedra give rise to slightly different hyperfine parameters, especially affecting the quadrupole splitting. Hence, the measured spectrum has been evaluated based on quadrupole splitting distribution. Abstract: The paper focuses on the study of the dynamic response of a wind turbine installed close to seismic fault in an earthquake prone region of Greece. The investigation of the seismic behavior of the turbine is performed with response spectrum analysis using the elastic acceleration spectrum provided by the Greek National Aseismic Code for the project area, increased by 25% due to proximity to seismic fault, as recommended by the Code. Also, dynamic analysis is performed using the spectrum obtained from the assessment of seismic hazard at the site of the project (Local), for two typical cases of earthquakes of magnitudes M s=5.8 and M s=7.3 with epicentral distances of 1km and 11km from the test position, respectively. Finally, a time-history analysis is carried out using an artificial accelerogram obtained from the local spectrum envelope, for the site of the project, considering 1% damping ratio. The direct comparison of the response spectrum analysis results with the corresponding ones obtained from the dynamic and time-history analyses indicates that the implementation of the elastic acceleration spectrum is insufficient, although increased, and therefore it could be deduced that the current recommendation of the Greek National Aseismic Code to consider an increment of 25% on the elastic acceleration spectrum in regions close to seismic faults, requires review and further improvement. On the south flank of the Acropolis of Athens there are two 10-m high columns belonging to the monument of Thrasyllos, free-standing since the third century BC. Obviously they have survived earthquakes for more than 2,300 years responding as natural seismoscopes with their damage 'recording' all strong earthquakes during their long life. Their existence naturally raises the questions of whether their mere survival can contribute to our scientific understanding of the long-term seismicity of Old Athens by addressing the various interrelated aspects of the problem combining earth science, seismology, archaeology, history, and engineering. Starting from the literary survey and the seismotectonic investigation of the region we find that although earthquakes were in the City, rarely causing concern, there is no evidence that Old Athens was ever seriously damaged. However, the historical literary record is incomplete having gaps at long periods of time; the columns, therefore, may be used to enhance our knowledge on the long-term seismicity, not only by estimating the worst-case ground shaking that could topple them-which has not happened yet-but in particular to assess the degree of shaking which was responsible for the damage that can be seen today on them. The decoding of this information is not a straightforward procedure and, in general, does not lead to a unique solution. The main reasons for this is on one hand the non-linearity and the sensitivity of the seismic response of multidrum columns, and on the other the lack of information on the evolution of the damage and the uncertainty on the real cause of it: it is not easy to determine how much of the damage to the columns that can be seen today must be attributed to earthquakes alone and how much of it is due to other reasons. In this research, from the detailed investigation of the current state of the columns, the damage caused by earthquakes was separated from the one caused by rusting of dowels and temperature effects. Back analyses were performed using suitable surrogate ground motions, aiming at determining the worst-case earthquake that could cause the collapse of the columns, and the maximum level of shaking that could cause the observed damage. The numerical analyses were performed using the Distinct Element Method and models that were exact reproductions of the columns based on the available data, while the joint properties were calibrated against ambient and forced vibration measurements. The results are consistent with the seismotectonic analysis and show that the mean response spectrum of the worst-case earthquakes is generally compatible with the response spectrum of EC 8 for the corresponding return period. It is possible, though, that the maximum experienced shaking is less. More information is needed on the real effect of the dowels of the drums to draw conclusions on the latter based on the observed damage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This paper presents the results obtained from field spectroradiometric campaigns over Neolithic tells (“magoules”) located at the Thessalian region in Greece. In each one of the four archaeological sites selected, three sections were carried out using the GER 1500 handheld spectroradiometer. Spectral profiles of the sections and several vegetation indices such as Normalized Difference Vegetation Indices (NDVI) and Simple Ratio (SR) have been examined in this study. This is one of the first times that ground hyperspectral data are evaluated in such context of archaeological research for the spectral characterization of archaeological features. As it was found, ground spectroradiometric measurements can be efficiently used in order to support and validate satellite imagery results for the detection of archaeological sites. Abstract: Elastic and inelastic displacement spectra (for periods up to 4.0s) are derived, using a representative sample of acceleration records from Greece, carefully selected based on magnitude, distance and peak ground acceleration criteria, and grouped into three ground type categories according to the Eurocode 8 (EC8) provisions. The modification factor for the elastic design spectrum adopted in EC8 for accounting for damping is verified herein and is found to be satisfactory in the short to medium period range and less so in the long period range. The equivalent viscous damping ratio concept is also evaluated and is found to lead to underestimation of inelastic displacement spectra. Finally, based on the previously derived elastic and inelastic spectra, equations suitable for design and/or assessment purposes, are proposed for the corresponding displacement modification factors. This paper uses an unusually large dataset to study scatter in site-effect estimation, focusing on how the events that increase uncertainty can be removed from the dataset. Four hundred seventy-three weak motion earthquake records from the surface and bedrock of a 178-m-deep borehole in Aegion, Gulf of Corinth, Greece, are used to evaluate spectral ratios. A simple statistical tool, variance reduction (VR), is first used to identify two groups of events that lie closest and farthest from the average, which is considered here as the initial best estimate of the site response. The scatter in the original dataset is found to be due to the group of events with smallest VR. These events can be removed from the dataset in order to compute a more reliable site response. However, VR is not normally used to choose records for site-effect studies, and it cannot be applied to the usual small datasets available. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is normally used to this end, for which reason we investigate whether SNR can be used to achieve similar results as VR. Signal-to-noise ratio is estimated using different definitions. Data selection based on SNR is then compared to that using VR in order to define an SNR-based criterion that discriminates against events that, according to VR, increase scatter. We find that defining the SNR of a surface record as the mean value over a frequency range around the resonant peak (here, 0.5-1.5 Hz) and using a cutoff value of 5 may be used in this case to exclude most events for which VR is small. Abstract: This study concerns the investigation of pigments and efflorescence phenomena on the wall paintings of Kastoria, a rural, non-metropolitan Byzantine town. A large number of representative samples were collected from the murals of three churches, dated to post-Byzantine era (14th–17th c. AD). The identified pigments for the red colour were hematite (Fe2O3), cinnabar (HgS) and minium (Pb3O4), while brown and yellow colours were attributed to mixtures of ochres (Fe-oxides and hydroxides) and lime. The utilization of admixtures of iron, lead and mercury compounds was also attested in order to render specific tones on the painted surfaces. Black and dark blue hues were prepared using black carbon and Mn in some cases. Grey colours were assigned to a mixture of black carbon and lime. Green colour is rather attributed to admixtures of Fe-rich minerals and lime and not to the commonly used green earths. Baryte (BaSO4) was also evidenced as a filler or extender. Phosphorous was detected and connected to proteinaceous material and Mo and Sb were traced which are probably affiliated to Fe-oxides. Regarding efflorescing salts, the determined compounds are: calcite, dolomite, gypsum, halite, nitratine, natron and mirabilite, all of which are related to temperature and humidity changes and moisture fluctuations inside the wall paintings. The Pirgadikia Terrane in northern Greece forms tectonic inliers within the Vardar suture zone bordering the Serbo-Macedonian Massif to the southwest. It comprises Cadomian basement rocks of volcanic-arc origin and very mature quartz-rich metasedimentary rocks. U–Pb laser ablation sector-field inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry analyses of detrital zircons from the latter reveal a marked input from a Cadomian–Pan-African source with minor contribution from Mesoproterozoic, Palaeoproterozoic and Archaean sources. The metasedimentary rocks are correlated with Ordovician overlap sequences at the northern margin of Gondwana on the basis of their maturity and zircon age spectra. The Pirgadikia Terrane can be best interpreted as a peri-Gondwana terrane of Avalonian origin, which was situated close to the Cadomian terranes in the Late Neoproterozoic–Early Palaeozoic, very much like the Istanbul Terrane. The second unit investigated is the Vertiskos Terrane, which constitutes the major part of the Serbo-Macedonian Massif in Greece. It comprises predominantly igneous rocks of Silurian age and minor metasedimentary rocks of unknown age and provenance. U–Pb analyses of detrital zircons from a garnetiferous mica schist of the Vertiskos Terrane indicate derivation from 550 to 1,150 Ma-old source rocks with a major Cadomian peak. This, combined with minor input of >1,950 Ma-old zircons and the absence of ages between ca. 1.2 and 1.7 Ga suggests a NW Africa source. The protolith age of the garnetiferous mica schist is presumably Early Ordovician. One sample of garnet-bearing biotite gneiss, interpreted as meta-igneous rock, comprises predominantly subhedral zircons of igneous origin with late Middle Ordovician to Silurian ages. We suggest that the rock association of the Vertiskos Terrane is part of an ancient active-margin succession of the Hun superterrane, comparable to successions of the Austro- and Intra-Alpine Terranes. The new data of this study provide evidence of occurrences of Avalonia- and Armorica-derived terranes in the Eastern Mediterranean and moreover help to clarify palaeogeographic reconstructions for the peri-Gondwana realm in the Early Palaeozoic. Abstract: Twenty six sites were instrumented in the city of Vartholomio following the December 2, 2002 Ms 6.0 earthquake. Thirty weak events from the aftershock sequence as well as microtremors were used to identify amplifications due to geological site effects. Horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratios (HVSR—Nakamura estimates) and weak events ratios were calculated and the singular spectrum analysis (SSA) method was used. The results showed that the effects of SSA on the stability of the frequency peak and amplitude distribution of HVSR for both weak motion and microtremors. The data analysis confirms the role of near surface geology in causing locally significant variations of the predominant frequencies and amplitudes of ground shaking as already inferred from the distribution of damages. The site response spectra exhibited significant peaks within the range of 1.5–2.6Hz and the amplification factor did not exceed 6.5. Finally the parts of the HVSR ratios from ∼0.2 up to 10Hz were used, in order to create an automatic optimal zonation of the study area using a genetic algorithm. Mid-infrared spectroscopy combined with multivariate analysis has been applied for the discrimination of 250 saffron samples from Greece (40 samples), Iran (87 samples), Italy (60 samples) and Spain (63 samples). The infrared spectra of saffron filament samples and their organic extracts were recorded. Principal component analysis was applied to different spectral regions. Then the principal components were used as variables in discriminant analysis. The best discriminatory approach was achieved in the spectral region 2000–700 cm−1. The spectral region responsible for the differentiation of Italian samples is in the region of carbonyl group around 1746 cm−1. The spectral region at around 1600 cm−1 and the band at 1670 cm−1 are responsible for the differentiation of samples from the remaining countries. From the original grouped cases, 93.6% were correctly classified. The correct classification rates for saffron samples from Greece, Iran, Italy and Spain were 90.0, 89.5, 96.7 and 98.4%, respectively. The combination of infrared spectroscopic technique with multivariate analysis is a rapid and ambient method to discriminate saffron samples in terms of geographical origin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The provenance question of the marbles used for making the sarcophagi of local production of Thessaloniki in the Roman period had been posed by archaeologists in the past. The hypothesis was that the material came mainly from the quarries of Thassos Island. This paper presents the scientific analysis of 23 characteristic samples from selected sarcophagi at the Museum of Thessaloniki, using three different techniques: electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, stable isotope analysis and maximum grain size measurements, plus in-situ examination. New combinations of parameters were used in order to resolve fully the provenance of all samples. The results showed that the vast majority of the objects were indeed made in Thassian marble but from three different quarries, namely Vathy/Saliara (dolomitic marble), Aliki (calcitic marble) and Acropolis/Phanari (calcitic marble). The calcitic marbles from Aliki and to a lesser degree from Acropolis/Phanari are met in all the basic types of sarcophagi (framed type, plain type, garland sarcophagi). The use of the better quality and snow-white dolomitic marble from Vathy/Saliara quarries is relatively restricted and is often found in works that are above the average regarding the quality of their workmanship. In addition, two sarcophagi were made in Pentlelic marble and one in Proconnesian. The scientific analysis results provide a good confirmation of the archaeological estimates and, furthermore, the conclusions constitute henceforth a secure basis for the study of the entire sculptured works of Thessaloniki. This article investigates the natural radioactivity of 26 ash samples, laboratory produced from lignite samples collected in the West Macedonia Lignite Center in Northern Greece. The activity concentrations of 40K, 235U, 238U, 226Ra, 228Ra, and 232Th were measured by γ spectroscopy and found four to five times higher than those in the original lignite samples. The radionuclides transfer factors depend on the characteristics of the combustion process and were found higher for 232Th, 228Ra, and 40K, because of their closer affinity with the inorganic fraction of the lignite. Compared with other results found in the published literature, the studied ash has relatively high content in radioactivity, but the resulting radiation dose from the radionuclide emissions in the West Macedonia Lignite Center do not contribute significantly to the total effective dose. Abstract: Within the framework of an ongoing geoarchaeological project undertaken in the area of Istron, Gulf of Mirabello, eastern Crete, sediment dating using optical stimulated luminescence (OSL) was employed to provide information on the landscape evolution of the area. In addition to detailed field-survey, geophysical prospection, and archaeological excavations, drilling of five boreholes provided undisturbed and light protected sediments to depths up to 12 m below sea level. OSL dating using blue-light stimulation was undertaken on pure quartz grain samples from two cores. In addition, chemical and spectrometric studies on selected deltaic deposits are enlightening for paleoenvironmental differentiations that prevailed at neighboring sites. The reported ages, with a span of 770 to ca. 15,000 a, along with the results of field work and chemical analysis provide insight for landscape evolution, influenced mainly by environmental changes at an area occupied by the man since Neolithic onwards. An M 6.7 intermediate-depth (66 km), in-slab earthquake occurring near the island of Kythera in Greece on 8 January 2006 was well recorded on networks of stations equipped with acceleration sensors and with broadband velocity sensors. All data were recorded digitally using recording instruments with resolutions ranging from almost 11 to 24 bits. We use data from these networks to study the distance dependence of the horizontal-component Fourier acceleration spectra (FAS) and horizontal-component pseudoabsolute response spectral acceleration (PSA). For purposes of simulating motions in the future, we parameterize the distance decay using several forms of the geometrical-spreading function, for each of which we derive Q as a function of frequency. By extrapolating the distance decay back to 1 km, we obtain a reference spectrum that can be used in future simulations. This spectrum requires a more complicated spectral shape than the classic single-corner-frequency model; in particular, there appears to be an enhancement of motion around 0.2-0.3 Hz that may be due to the radiation of a 3-5 sec pulse from the source. We infer a κ0 value of about 0.055 sec for rock stations and a stress parameter in the range of 400-600 bars. We also find distinctive differences in the site response of stations on soft soil and soil; both the FAS and the 5% damped PSA amplifications have similar peak amplitudes (about 2 and 4 for soil and soft-soil sites, respectively, relative to the rock sites) at similar frequencies (between about 0.4 and 2.0 Hz, with the soft-soil amplifications peaking at somewhat lower frequencies than the soil amplifications). One of the most distinctive features of the data is the clear difference in the motions for along-arc and back-arc stations, with the former being significantly higher than the latter over a broad range of frequencies at distances beyond about 250 km. The motions from the Kythera earthquake are roughly comparable to those from intermediate-depth earthquakes elsewhere, but they appear to be significantly higher than those from recordings of shallow earthquakes in Greece of comparable magnitude and hypocentral distance. This study aims at the comparison of different site-effect estimation techniques. We used aftershock records of the 14 August 2003 (Mw 6:2) earthquake that occurred in the western part of Greece next to Lefkas Island. A data set of 15 events recorded at five stations was selected for the period of 20 August 2003-30 September 2003. The moment magnitudes range between 3.3 and 4.2, and the hypocentral distances vary from 5 to 34 km. The site effects are determined using the standard spectral ratio (SSR) method, the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio for earthquake data method (the so-called receiver function [RF] method), and an inversion method for simultaneous source, path, and site-effects estimation. These methods are applied to both P and S waves, using exactly the same time windows in order to compute the spectra. Finally, using geotechnical information available for the city of Lefkas, the experimental site transfer functions at each site are compared to theoretical one-dimensional 1D transfer functions computed using Kennett's reflectivity coefficient method. We show that the SSR method and the inversion method give similar site transfer functions. However, the experimental SSR fits even better with the spectral ratios of the inversion results, which indicates that our reference site is affected by a small site effect. Moreover, the RF method results fit well with the horizontal-to-vertical ratios coming from the inversion results, indicating in this case a nonnegligible amplification on the vertical component. This is the reason why the RF gives only the frequency of amplification but not the amplitude. These conclusions hold for both P and S waves. Finally, the site effects computed using the whole record or a window including only S waves are similar, while the P waves results, although showing some similar features with those for S waves, give different transfer functions for the sites investigated. A number of construction practices, implemented during the design process of a reinforced concrete (RC) structural system, may have significant consequences on the behaviour of the structural system in the case of earthquake loading. Although a number of provisions are imposed by the contemporary Greek national design codes for the seismic design of RC structures, in order to reduce the consequences, the influence of the construction practices on the seismic behaviour of the structural system remains significant. The objective of this work is to perform a comparative study in order to examine the influence of three, often encountered, construction practices namely weak ground storey, short and floating columns and two combinations on the seismic performance of the structural system with respect to the structural capacity and the maximum interstorey drifts in three earthquake hazard levels. This paper presents electric field measurements in the underground water horizon that have been processed by a specialised model installation which receives and records electric signals. From the description and the technical characteristics of the installation, it results that the origin of changes of the recorded electric field is owed to a natural process that concerns the interior of our planet. External factors such as the Ionosphere and human activity do not interfere with the measurements of this particular installation. The presentation of the measurements is dominated by a permanent periodic variation of the electric field with a constant period of about 24 hours. The basic periodic variation of the electric component, which is recorded and examined here, is modulated by pulses of variable amplitude and duration, accidentally distributed in time. The possible generating mechanism of pulses is also under examination in this paper. The result of spectrum analysis of the initial recordings shows a high peak which is identified with the equivalent maximum of the two main mechanical tidal components that are described in the bibliography. It is under examination whether the measured changes are related or emanating from the tidal deformity of the ground. Other available measurements of the components of the Earth's magnetic field (included in the measurements carried out by special scientific projects in Greece and around the world) show the existence of a permanent periodic variation with a constant period of about 24 hours. The time comparison between the variations of the vertical component of the Earth's magnetic field and the measured variations of the electric field reveals a phase shift of 90 degrees. Taking into consideration the above statement, we may infer that the periodic variation of the measured electric signal is the electric component of an electromagnetic wave. It appears that this electromagnetic wave is caused by the tidal deformity of the Earth. Abstract: Elastic and inelastic spectra are derived, based on a representative sample of acceleration records from Greece, carefully selected based on magnitude, distance and peak ground acceleration criteria, and grouped into three ground condition categories according to the 2004 Eurocode 8 (EC8) provisions. Using software developed in-house, elastic (pseudoacceleration, pseudovelocity and displacement), as well as inelastic (strength and displacement) spectra are computed for various critical damping ratios and ductility levels. After appropriate scaling, mean spectra are computed both irrespective of, as well as for each different, ground condition, and comparisons with EC8 provisions are made. As a further evaluation of the code spectra, three additional earthquake scenarios are considered representing ground-motion characteristics not reflected in the compiled dataset of records. Subsequently, modification factors for strength (qμ ) are derived from statistical analysis of constant ductility spectra, and corresponding empirical relationships, suitable for design purposes, are proposed. Abstract: Optical and SEM-EDS microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction and micro FT-IR spectroscopy investigations of the funerary klinai (couches) of Tomb 1 from Amphipolis and a stone sarcophagus from ancient Tragilos—two painted monuments made by Macedonian craftsmen of the Early Hellenistic period—identified the original materials and painting technique, as well as synthetic materials used as consolidants during past restoration treatments. The original organic binders and the superficial modern coatings have been identified by micro FT-IR spectroscopy applied directly to the sampled powders or tiny fragments and to their solvent—soluble fractions. The pigments identified on the couch of Amphipolis are: red and yellow ochre, cinnabar, Madder lake, paratacamite and antlerite, carbon black, calcium carbonate, kaolin and gypsum. The identification of egg and animal glue confirms the application of tempera and secco techniques. The detection of polymers such as polydimethylsiloxane, polyvinyl acetate and alkyd resins, is related to modern restoration products. The pigments attested on the paintings of the Tragilos'' sarcophagus are: red and yellow ochre, Egyptian blue, malachite, carbon black, calcium carbonate and gypsum. The absence of organic binders combined with the constant presence of calcium carbonate in all the examined samples suggests the use of lime as the binding medium in the painted decoration of the sarcophagus. This work investigates the spectral atmospheric transmittance due to aerosols in the urban environment of Athens during a period of one year. The spectral transmittance due to aerosols is derived using measurements of spectral direct-beam solar irradiance in the 310-575 nm spectral band. This derivation is accomplished by using a radiative transfer model for estimating the partial spectral atmospheric transmittance functions due to Rayleigh scattering, and absorption by ozone, nitrogen dioxide and water vapor. The seasonal and diurnal variation of the aerosol transmittance is investigated and the results are discussed with a view to air pollution sources, meteorological factors and topographic characteristics of the Athens basin. The results of the analyses performed on blue, black, brown, orange, white and purple pigments decorating Hellenistic figurines, excavated in a rock-cut tomb in the archaeological zone of Chania, Crete, Greece, are presented. Different spectroscopic techniques, such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence identified the compounds present in the chromatic layers. X-ray diffraction analysis gave complementary information and further support to the spectral assignments. Optical microscopy revealed the nature and sequence of the pigmented layer on the terracotta. Several precious pigments, such as Egyptian blue for the bluish areas, Tyrian purple for the purple ones, and the rare huntite for the white-pigmented areas were identified among the studied pigmented areas. The pigment analysis provides information on the technical aspects related to terracotta manufacture and preservation, and promotes historical indications on cultural and commercial changes among the Mediterranean civilisations. A set of methods has been compiled to compare gridded air emission inventories that have been derived, on the same spatial grid, using widely differing techniques. Top-down and bottom-up inventories for Milan, Italy and for the Greater Athens area (GAA), Greece were used to test and apply these methods. The applicability of each method to certain source sectors was assessed by conducting sensitivity analyses. Whilst some of the methods (such as regression calculations or the Moran coefficient) appeared very sensitive to variations of point source emissions, others (e.g. the construction of difference maps) proved more appropriate for characterizing line source differences. Area sources could best be dealt with by using the newly developed acceptability criterion. The development of these tools allows a reproducible comparison of sets of emission inventories and consequently supports developments towards improvement. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is a key component of the Mediterranean diet, with several health benefits derived from its consumption. Moreover, due to its eminent market position, EVOO has been thoroughly studied over the last several years, aiming at its authentication, but also to reveal the chemical profile inherent to its beneficial properties. In the present work, a comparative study was conducted to assess Greek EVOOs' quality and authentication utilizing different analytical approaches, both targeted and untargeted. 173 monovarietal EVOOs from three emblematic Greek cultivars (Koroneiki, Kolovi and Adramytiani), obtained during the harvesting years of 2018-2020, were analyzed and quantified as per their fatty acids methyl esters (FAMEs) composition via the official method (EEC) No 2568/91, as well as their bioactive content through liquid chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) methodology. In addition to FAMEs analysis, EVOO samples were also analyzed via HRMS-untargeted metabolomics and optical spectroscopy techniques (visible absorption, fluorescence and Raman). The data retrieved from all applied techniques were analyzed with Machine Learning methods for the authentication of the EVOOs' variety. The models' predictive performance was calculated through test samples, while for further evaluation 30 commercially available EVOO samples were also examined in terms of variety. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study where different techniques from the fields of standard analysis, spectrometry and optical spectroscopy are applied to the same EVOO samples, providing strong insight into EVOOs chemical profile and a comparative evaluation through the different platforms.

Results are presented from a wind turbulence measurements campaign at the summit of a hill in complex terrain in Andros island (Greece) where a wind turbine park has been constructed. Mean turbulence parameters and power spectra from three 30 m masts located at the summit, upwind and downwind of the hill are analysed to ascertain the differences from respective parameters in flat terrain and to assess the influence of the irregular topography. The variances of the horizontal (vertical) wind components are found to be smaller (larger) than the ones from flat terrain. Of the available correlations for the power spectra, the Von Karman one was found to give better results, although the low frequency parts show pronounced lags. The asymmetry of the upwind terrain for different wind directions and especially its slope is clearly felt both by variances and by spectra. This influence, as expected, is found to increase with increasing stability. These results have an important significance for wind turbine design and wind energy utilisation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article reports on the electronic impedance spectroscopy (EIS)-based sensor to test rennet, designed by Mamantos Prodromidis and colleagues at the University of Ioannina, Greece. It says that Prodromidis chose EIS to analyze rennet due to its potential to take advantage of low cost electrode manufacturing and the ability of multiplexing. It adds that the investigators observed reliable signal changes within five minutes of incubation based on the measured values of liquid rennet samples.

31P-NMR spectroscopy was employed to detect and quantify glycerol in red wines from various regions of Greece. This novel analytical method was based on the derivatization of the hydroxyl groups of glycerol with 2-chloro-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl dioxaphospholane, and identification of the phosphitylated compound on the basis of 31P chemical shifts. Quantification of glycerol in wines was accomplished by integration of appropriate signals in the 31P-NMR spectrum and the use of the phosphitylated cyclohexanol as the internal standard. The method was reproducible (CV (%) = 2.35) and accurate (CV (%) = 1.34). Its applicability to glycerol quantification in wines was tested against a weighted amount of a glycerol-model compound by linear regression analysis (R = 0.999; intercept = 0.074 ± 0.078; slope = 0.998 ± 0.003; p = 0.000). Furthermore, the NMR method was compared to the AOAC official method (HPLC) using the Bland and Altman statistical analysis. The distribution of the data points in the bias plot showed that 100% of the measurements of glycerol in 16 wine samples from various regions of Greece were within the limits of agreement of the two methods. Total suspended particle (TSP) concentrations were determined in the Eordea basin (western Macedonia, Greece), an area with intensive lignite burning for power generation. The study was conducted over a one-year period (November 2000-November 2001) at 10 sites located at variable distances from the power plants. Ambient TSP samples were analyzed for 27 major, minor and trace elements. Annual means of TSP concentrations ranged between 47+/-33 microg m(-3) and 110+/-50 microg m(-3) at 9 out of the 10 sites. Only the site closest to the power stations and the lignite conveyor belts exhibited annual TSP levels (210+/-97 microg m(-3)) exceeding the European standard (150 microg m(-3), 80/779/EEC). Concentrations of TSP and almost all elemental components exhibited significant spatial variations; however, the elemental profiles of TSP were quite similar among all sites suggesting that they are affected by similar source types. At all sites, statistical analysis indicated insignificant (P<0.05) seasonal variation for TSP concentrations. Some elements (Cl, As, Pb, Br, Se, S, Cd) exhibited significantly higher concentrations at certain sites during the cold period suggesting more intense emissions from traffic, domestic heating and other combustion sources. On the contrary, concentrations significantly higher in the warm period were found at other sites mainly for crustal elements (Ti, Mn, K, P, Cr, etc.) suggesting stronger influence from soil resuspension and/or fly ash in the warm months. The most enriched elements against local soil or road dust were S, Cl, Cu, As, Se, Br, Cd and Pb, whereas negligible enrichment was found for Ti, Mn, Mg, Al, Si, P, Cr. At most sites, highest concentrations of TSP and elemental components were associated with low- to moderate-speed winds favoring accumulation of emissions from local sources. Influences from the power generation were likely at those sites located closest to the power plants and mining activities.

Aim: To evaluate selenium (Se) and copper (Cu) concentrations in Greek and Albanian immigrant mothers and in the cord blood of their newborns., Subjects and Methods: From 1118 Greek and 820 Albanian mothers and from the cord blood of their neonates blood was obtained for Se and Cu measurement. Se and Cu concentrations were determined in sera with graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy (GFAAAS) and atomic absorption spectrometry, respectively. In all, 30 days' nutrient intakes were evaluated in both groups., Results: Animal protein, Se and Cu intakes were poor in the Albanians vs the Greeks (P < 0.001). Se concentrations in the Greek mothers (68.3 +/- 8.5 microg/l) and in their newborns (37.02 +/- 8.9 microg/l) were found higher as compared with those in Albanian mothers (37.4 +/- 9.9 microg/l) and in their newborns (34.3 +/- 9.1 microg/l) (P < 0.001). Cu levels were also found higher (P < 0.001) in the Greek mothers (1687 +/- 353 microg/l) and in their neonates (449 +/- 87 microg/l) compared with those in the Albanian mothers (959 +/- 318 microg/l) and in their newborns (229 +/- 67 microg/l). Additionally, 31.5% of neonates born to Albanian women with Se concentrations less than 28 microg/l had higher Se levels (P < 0.01) than their mothers., Conclusions: The low Se and Cu levels evaluated in the Albanian mothers and their newborns could be related to their poor animal protein intake which could be the consequence of their low socioeconomic status. Determinations of the cadmium content of a wide variety of foodstuffs from the Greek market were carried out. The values detected ranged from <0.1 ng x g(-1) in alcoholic beverages to 1595.8 ng x g(-1) in large snails. The highest values were observed in molluscs and crustaceans (117.4 ng x g(-1)), followed by leafy vegetables (28.3 ng x g(-1)), potatoes (22.3 ng x g(-1)) and organs and offal (20.7 ng x g(-1)), whereas the other food categories had a lower cadmium content. The results are comparable with those from the rest of Europe. Preliminary analytical data on the cadmium content of food samples of organic cultivation showed significantly lower values compared with those of samples of conventional produce.

Immediately after the Chernobyl accident, a soil sampling programme was undertaken in order to detect and quantitatively analyse the long-lived radionuclides in the Chernobyl fallout. Soil samples (1242 in number) of 1 cm thick surface soil were collected in Greece during the period from May-November 1986. The samples were counted and analysed using Ge detector set-ups. The 137Cs fallout data have already been analysed, mapped and published. In an attempt to improve this analysis and also to extent it to other fallout radionuclides, an in-house unix-based data base/geographical information system (DBGIS) was developed. Multifractal analyses of the deposition patterns have also been performed. In the present work, an analysis of the results of the deposition of 137Cs, 134Cs, 144Ce, 141Ce, 125Sb, 110mAg, 106Ru, 103Ru, 95Zr and 54Mn are presented together with relevant fractal analysis and three characteristic contour maps. The maximum detected values of the above-mentioned radionuclides were 149.5 +/- 0.1, 76.1 +/- 0.1, 32.9 +/- 0.2, 46 +/- 2, 4.56 +/- 0.02, 7.98 +/- 0.02, 79.1 +/- 0.4, 337 +/- 2, 20.1 +/- 0.2 and 3.02 +/- 0.02 kBq m-2, respectively. Furthermore, a statistical technique to compare contour maps was introduced and applied to explain the differences which appeared in the maps of the above-mentioned radionuclides.
