The implementation of educating "Basic Life Support (BLS) competences" in German schools is particularly affected by the often reported "implementational gap" --limited transfer of empirical findings into practice. This Design-Based Research (DBR) study evaluates two different methodologies for BLS teaching, generating implications for transfer. Students (N = 136) of a secondary school (11-13 years) were assigned to different methodological approaches. A test group (TG) received intervention implemented into regular biology lessons (10 units; n = 48); the control group (CG) participated in a basic instruction (2 units; n = 68). Both large-scale methods -- subject-matter teaching (TG) and project activity (CG) -- were compared regarding current motivation, self-efficacy, constructivist instruction, cognitive load, and practical skills. Data from n = 125 students (TG=48; TG=68) could be included into analysis (Mage=11,16; SD=.45; 55.2% female). Probability of success and interest increased, anxiety perception decreased (no group-interaction effect), whereas challenge perception remained constantly. Self-efficacy overall improved from before to after intervention, with TG reporting higher social self-efficacy and less negative outcome expectancies. No differences were found for practical BLS performance. MANOVA (after intervention) showed higher values for anxiety in TG, and for self-efficacy, CG has higher values for negative outcome expectancies (post hoc analysis). For cognitive load and constructivist instruction, no differences between groups were found. In conclusion, both methodological approaches seem to have their own pedagogical justification. Schools' implementation processes may benefit from combining (subject-matter) curriculum content with BLS information or content to facilitate time and resource-saving realization.

Although humans often multitask, little is known about how the processing of concurrent tasks is managed. The present study investigated whether adjustments in parallel processing during multitasking are local (task-specific) or global (task-unspecific). In three experiments, participants performed one of three tasks: a primary task or, if this task did not require a response, one of two background tasks (i.e., prioritized processing paradigm). To manipulate the degree of parallel processing, we presented blocks consisting mainly of primary or background task trials. In Experiment 1, the frequency manipulation was distributed equally across the two background tasks. In Experiments 2 and 3, only one background task was frequency-biased (inducer task). The other background task was presented equally often in all blocks (diagnostic task) and served to test whether processing adjustments transferred. In all experiments, blocks with frequent background tasks yielded stronger interference between primary and background tasks (primary task performance) and improved background task performance. Thus, resource sharing appeared to increase with high background task probabilities even under triple task requirements. Importantly, these adjustments generalized across the background tasks when they were conceptually and visually similar (Experiment 2). Implementing more distinct background tasks limited the transfer: Adjustments were restricted to the inducer task in background task performance and only small transfer was observed in primary task performance (Experiment 3). Overall, the results indicate that the transfer of adjustments in parallel processing is unrestricted for similar, but limited for distinct tasks, suggesting that task similarity affects the generality of resource allocation in multitasking.

Background The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected acute ischemic stroke (AIS) care. In this study, we examined the effects of the pandemic on neurosurgical AIS care by means of decompressive surgery (DS). Methods In this retrospective observational study, we compared the characteristics, in-hospital processes, and in-hospital mortality rates among patients hospitalized for AIS during the first four waves of the pandemic (between January 1, 2020 and October 26, 2021) versus the corresponding periods in 2019 (prepandemic). We used administrative data from a nationwide hospital network in Germany. Results Of the 177 included AIS cases with DS, 60 were from 2019 and 117 from the first four pandemic waves. Compared with the prepandemic levels, there were no changes in weekly admissions for DS during the pandemic. The same was true for patient age (range: 51.7–60.4 years), the number of female patients (range: 33.3–57.1%), and the prevalence of comorbidity, as measured by the Elixhauser Comorbidity Index (range: 13.2–20.0 points). Also, no alterations were observed in transfer to the intensive care unit (range: 87.0–100%), duration of in-hospital stay (range: 14.6–22.7 days), and in-hospital mortality rates (range: 11.8–55.6%). Conclusion In Germany, compared with the prepandemic levels, AIS patients undergoing DS during the first four waves of the pandemic showed no changes in demographics, rates of comorbidity, and in-hospital mortality rates. This is in contrast to previous evidence on patients with less critical types of AIS not requiring DS and underlines the uniqueness of the subgroup of AIS patients requiring DS. Our findings suggests that these patients, in contrast to AIS patients in general, were unable to forgo hospitalization during the COVID-19 pandemic. One prominent feature of adaptive cognition in humans is the ability to flexibly adjust to changing task demands. In this respect, context-specific proportion congruency (CSPC) effects describe the phenomenon that participants learn to adapt to contexts of frequently occurring conflicts even when the upcoming context cannot be anticipated. Here, we aim to provide evidence that such CSPC effects strongly depend on the affective valence of the context. Participants had to categorize pictures as animals versus humans (Experiment 1), words as male versus female (Experiment 2), and food pictures as depicting cold or hot dishes/beverages (Experiment 3). Stimuli were laterally presented to the left or right, creating Simon-like response interference. Half of the stimuli were of positive valence, half of negative valence with valence always being task-irrelevant. Positive or negative stimuli were associated with a high proportion of incongruent trials and a low proportion of congruent trials, respectively. In all three experiments, a CSPC effect was only significant when the high proportion of incongruent trials was associated with positive stimuli but reduced or even absent when the high proportion of incongruent trials was associated with negative stimuli. The findings further speak to the idea that it is the aversive nature of conflict stimuli that functions as a trigger for control adaptation. And such an unexpected aversive conflict signal looms larger when presented in a positive context than in a negative context.

Purpose: Hypertoxigenic Streptococcus pyogenes emm1 lineage M1UK has recently been associated with upsurges of invasive infections and scarlet fever in several countries, but whole-genome sequencing surveillance data of lineages circulating in Germany is lacking. In this study, we investigated recent iGAS isolates from our laboratory at a German tertiary care center for the presence of the M1UK lineage. Methods: Whole-genome sequencing was employed to characterize a collection of 47 consecutive non-copy isolates recovered from blood cultures (21) and tissue samples (26) in our laboratory between October 2022 and April 2023. Results: M protein gene (emm) typing distinguished 14 different emm types, with emm1 (17) being the dominant type. Single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis confirmed the presence of all 27 SNPs characteristic for the M1UK lineage in 14 of 17 emm1 isolates. Conclusion: This study has shown for the first time that M1UK is present in Germany and might constitute a driving force in the observed surge of GAS infections. Experiencing the moral emotions of gratitude and moral elevation are responses to witnessing virtuous deeds of others. Both emotions have been found to share similar features and behavioral consequences, including the stimulation of personal development. The broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions indicates that gratitude and elevation prompt the long-term development of lasting resources. Moral identity has been found to be a personal resource in the moral domain since it is associated with higher levels of moral functioning. Therefore, using a two-wave cross-lagged panel design, the current study investigated the causal role of trait gratitude and trait elevation as antecedents of short-term moral identity development. At two points of time (time interval 17 months), a heterogeneous sample of n = 129 adults with a broad range of age completed measures of trait gratitude, trait moral elevation (engagement with moral beauty), and moral identity (internalization and symbolization of the Aquino-Reed framework). In line with our hypotheses, trait moral elevation predicted increases in moral identity internalization. In contrast to our hypotheses, the development of trait gratitude was predicted by moral identity internalization, and not the other way around. Exploratory analyses showed that no cross-lagged effects could be found for the symbolization dimension. In addition, a multi-group analysis explored which of the cross-lagged effects could be generalized across age groups. The results are discussed in the context of the moral emotion research.

The simulation of fast-reacting hydrological systems often requires sub-hourly precipitation data to develop appropriate climate adaptation strategies and tools, i.e. upgrading drainage systems and reducing flood risks. However, these sub-hourly data are typically not provided by measurements and atmospheric models, and many statistical disaggregation tools are applicable only up to an hourly resolution. Here, two different models for the disaggregation of precipitation data from a daily to sub-hourly scale are presented. The first one is a conditional disaggregation model based on first-order Markov chains and copulas (WayDown) that keeps the input daily precipitation sums consistent within disaggregated time series. The second one is an unconditional rain generation model based on a double Poisson process (LetItRain) that does not reproduce the input daily values but rather generates time series with consistent rainfall statistics. Both approaches aim to reproduce observed precipitation statistics over different timescales. The developed models were validated using 10 min radar data representing 10 climate stations in Germany and South Korea; thus, they cover various climate zones and precipitation systems. Various statistics were compared, including the mean, variance, autocorrelation, transition probabilities, and proportion of wet period. Additionally, extremes were examined, including the frequencies of different thresholds, extreme quantiles, and annual maxima. To account for the model uncertainties, 1000-year-equivalent ensembles were generated by both models for each study site. While both models successfully reproduced the observed statistics, WayDown was better (than LetItRain) at reproducing the ensemble median, showing strength with respect to precisely refining the coarse input data. In contrast, LetItRain produced rainfall with a greater ensemble variability, thereby capturing a variety of scenarios that may happen in reality. Both methods reproduced extremes in a similar manner: overestimation until a certain threshold of rainfall and underestimation thereafter. Finally, the models were applied to climate projection data. The change factors for various statistics and extremes were computed and compared between historical (radar) information and the climate projections at a daily and 10 min scale. Both methods showed similar results for the respective stations and Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) scenarios. Several consistent trends, jointly confirmed by disaggregated and daily data, were found for the mean, variance, autocorrelation, and proportion of wet periods. Further, they presented similar behaviour with respect to annual maxima for the majority of the stations for both RCP scenarios in comparison to the daily scale (i.e. a similar systematic underestimation). Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is driven by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, which has led to an enormous burden on patient morbidity and mortality. The renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system (RAAS) plays a significant role in various pulmonary diseases. Since SARS-CoV-2 utilizes the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE)2 receptor to exert its virulence and pathogenicity, the RAAS is of particular importance in COVID 19. Methods: Our preliminary study investigates retrospectively the influence of selected ACE-polymorphisms (I/D location at intron 16 in the B-coding sequence (rs4646994) and A-240T (rs 4291) at the A-promoter) as well as ACE1 and ACE2 serum levels on disease severity and the inflammatory response in inpatients and outpatients with COVID-19. Results: Our study included 96 outpatients and 88 inpatients (65.9% male, mean age 60 years) with COVID-19 from April to December 2020 in four locations in Germany. Of the hospitalized patients, 88.6% participants were moderately ill (n = 78, 64% male, median age 60 years), and 11.4% participants were severely ill or deceased (n = 10, 90% male, median age 71 years). We found no polymorphism-related difference in disease, in age distribution, time to hospitalization and time of hospitalization for the inpatient group. ACE1 serum levels were significantly increased in the DD compared to the II polymorphism and in the TT compared to the AA polymorphism. There was no significant difference in ACE 1 serum levels l between moderately ill and severely ill patients. However, participants requiring oxygen supplementation had significantly elevated ACE1 levels compared to participants not requiring oxygen, with no difference in ACE2 levels whereas females had significantly higher ACE2 levels. Conclusions: Although there were no differences in the distribution of ACE polymorphisms in disease severity, we found increased proinflammatory regulation of the RAAS in patients with oxygen demand and increased serum ACE2 levels in women, indicating a possible enhanced anti-inflammatory immune response. Purpose: In spine care, frailty is associated with poor outcomes. The aim of this study was to describe changes in frailty in spine care during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and their relation to surgical management and outcomes. Methods: Patients hospitalized for spine pathologies between January 1, 2019, and May 17, 2022, within a nationwide network of 76 hospitals in Germany were retrospectively included. Patient frailty, types of surgery, and in-hospital mortality rates were compared between pandemic and pre-pandemic periods. Results: Of the 223,418 included patients with spine pathologies, 151,766 were admitted during the pandemic and 71,652 during corresponding pre-pandemic periods in 2019. During the pandemic, the proportion of high-frailty patients increased from a range of 5.1–6.1% to 6.5–8.8% (p < 0.01), while the proportion of low frailty patients decreased from a range of 70.5–71.4% to 65.5–70.1% (p < 0.01). In most phases of the pandemic, the Elixhauser comorbidity index (ECI) showed larger increases among high compared to low frailty patients (by 0.2–1.8 vs. 0.2–0.8 [p < 0.01]). Changes in rates of spine surgery were associated with frailty, most clearly in rates of spine fusion, showing consistent increases among low frailty patients (by 2.2–2.5%) versus decreases (by 0.3–0.8%) among high-frailty patients (p < 0.02). Changes in rates of in-hospital mortality were not associated with frailty. Conclusions: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the proportion of high-frailty patients increased among those hospitalized for spine pathologies in Germany. Scholars have called to study how social cohesion is discursively negotiated and produced in communication behavior. However, empirical evidence remains scarce. In this study, we investigate to what extent and how civil society organizations (CSOs), part of the backbone of social integration in modern democracies, make references to social cohesion in their public self-portrayals. We develop a standardized measure for content analyzing the manifestation of social cohesion along three theoretical dimensions: social relations, connectedness, and orientation towards the common good. We apply our innovative content measure to the external communication of an original sample of nearly 800 CSOs in Germany, using their websites. Subsequently, we use data from an accompanying organizational survey of these institutions to investigate whether and how certain organizational features help explain variance in social cohesion rhetoric. Findings suggest that CSOs' external communications employ themes from all key dimensions of social cohesion, revealing a fair amount of variation on all three subdimensions and a summary index of the overall strength social cohesion rhetoric. These different emphases are contingent upon various organizational characteristics, namely the spheres in which CSOs are primarily active, their locations, and their target groups. Whereas culturally and media-oriented organizations as well as sports clubs are largely reluctant to make references to social cohesion, politically active CSOs and those addressing socially disadvantaged communities tend to push more in this direction. The latter tend to operate in more professionalized structures, indicating that referencing social cohesion legitimizes these groups' political and social purposes in the public sphere. Introduction: In this paper, Spanish future primary teachers' pedagogical knowledge of numbers and operation, as revealed through their results in the TEDS-M ("Teacher Education and Development Study in Mathematics"), is compared with that of two other groups. The first group are the future primary teachers of other OECD countries that also participated in the study: Norway, Germany, Chile and Poland. The second group are the future primary teachers of participating countries where preservice teachers receive training similar to Spain's teacher training, namely, China-Taipei, Singapore, United States, Philippines and Switzerland. Method: To meet this objective, data was analyzed and parameters were calculated based on categories that characterize the pedagogical knowledge required to correctly answer the questions in this conceptual domain, using response assessment criteria. Results: We found that Spanish prospective teachers have lower results, in general, than those of the other OECD countries and of countries in the group with similar training programs. The Spanish scores are lower than Norwegian, Swiss and Singaporean scores in all aspects considered. For most categories, Spain obtained higher scores than Philippines and Chile, and similar scores to the U.S.A. Discussion: When comparing the results from the OECD countries that participated in the two international studies, TEDS-M and TIMSS 2011 (Spain, Poland, USA, Norway, Germany and Chile), we find that their relative positions are maintained in the ranking of assessed mathematical knowledge of numbers and operations, whether in preservice teachers or in primary students. Spanish results in the TIMSS are just above Poland and Chile and below the rest. The results obtained in this study may be useful in the current syllabus design process for subjects in the Elementary Teacher Education degree.

The sampling adjustment factor (SAF) can correct the underestimation of fixed time interval maxima (F-Maxima) relative to maxima of moving time windows (M-Maxima) as a direct consequence of temporal discretization of time series. Radar data can help to understand the significance of using moving window aggregation rather than fixed window. Here, we investigate SAFs for two gridded radar quantitative precipitation estimates from the German Meteorological Service (RADKLIM-RW and RADKLIM-YW, DWD 2018) with different temporal resolutions (5 min and hourly) and a spatial resolution of 1 km × 1 km from 2001 to 2016. For each grid cell's time series within Germany, the overall maximum intensities per chosen duration were derived with (1) moving and (2) fixed window aggregation. Correction factors (SAF) from fixed to moving window were retrieved. The findings of this study partly match previous findings, more for the 5-min product than for the hourly product. No clear dependency on topography or season could be derived from the analysis. It showed that high SAF are usually related to high(er) actual rainfall values. The study emphasises the probabilistic nature of the rainfall maxima correction and shows that it is important to not only consider average SAFs, but also take an in-depth look at the distribution when correcting maxima. As a consequence, design precipitation as used, e.g., in context of flash or urban floods could profit from spatially adjusted or uniform scaling, depending on the characteristics found in the spatial distribution of the SAFs. Performing 2 highly similar tasks at the same time requires an adaptive regulation of cognitive control to shield prioritized primary task processing from between-task (cross-talk) interference caused by secondary task processing. In the present study, the authors investigated how implicitly and explicitly delivered information promotes the flexible online adjustment of task shielding in dual-task performance. Context-specific implicit activation of cognitive control was implemented by location-dependent manipulations of the likelihood of between-task interference (i.e., locations containing high vs. low proportions of between-task interference trials). Following practice, between-task interference was reduced in a subsequent test session for locations associated with high (compared to locations with low) task-shielding demands, indicating that the cognitive system can register and utilize implicit context features (Experiments 1 and 2). In Experiment 3, cues were used that provided additional explicit information. Whereas cues validly indicating the interference level in the next trial failed to further optimize context-specific task shielding, cues indicating the location of subsequent stimulus presentation resulted in an instant adjustment of task shielding already in the first part of the experiment. Results highlight the role of implicit and explicit information for context-sensitive adjustments of cognitive control in dual-task performance.

The present study involved 120 kindergartners, of whom n = 60 were followed up to first grade. Upon making inquiries regarding closeness in teacher-child relationships in the classrooms, the children participated in a laboratory situation in which they were exposed to computerized tasks. These tasks challenged the cognitive processes thought to govern basic knowledge and belief systems. Before each task commenced, however, the image of the child's teacher (affective prime stimulus), with whom the relationship had been measured, was displayed for an experimental group of children. In contrast to a control group being exposed to a neutral prime, it was assumed that the teachers' images displayed in the experimental group would affect cognitive performance in a defined way (i.e., if primed by a person schema of a close relationship, these children should perform better than the rest). Whereas solving scores remained unaffected, children displayed shorter solving times under affective primes when in close relationships with their teachers. This effect could even be evidenced after the transition to school. Results suggest that cognitive processing is much more effective if close teacher-child relationships are involved. We used a newly developed experimental paradigm to investigate aftereffects of completed intentions on subsequent performance that required the maintenance and execution of new intentions. Participants performed an ongoing number categorization task and an additional prospective memory (PM) task, which required them to respond to PM cues that differed from standard stimuli in 1 particular visual feature. Although the feature defining the to-be-acted-upon PM cue changed in each block, the irrelevant PM cue of the previous PM task block was occasionally repeated in the subsequent block. In 4 experiments we found that performance in the ongoing task was substantially slowed for repeated PM cue trials compared to oddball trials, which also differed in a visual feature from standard stimuli but never served as PM cues. This aftereffect decreased as a function of delay after intention completion. These findings indicate that intentions can exhibit persisting activation even after they have been completed and may interfere with the execution of the new relevant task. Interference effects are reduced after trials including response conflict. This sequential modulation has often been attributed to a top-down mediated adaptive control mechanism and/or to feature repetition mechanisms. In the present study we tested whether mechanisms responsible for such sequential modulations are subject to attentional limitations under dual-task situations. Participants performed a Simon task in mixed single- and dual-task contexts (Experiment 1), in blocked contexts with dual-task load either, in trialN (Experiment 2a), in trialN-1 (Experiment 2b), or in both trials (Experiment 3). Results showed that the occurrence of a sequential modulation did not depend on dual-task load per se as it occurred predominantly in conditions of lowest and highest task load. Instead, task factors such as the repetition of task episodes and stimulus-response repetitions determined whether a sequential modulation occurred. (Contains 4 footnotes, 2 tables, and 4 figures.)

Dynamic adjustments of cognitive control in response to interference from irrelevant stimulus attributes have repeatedly been shown. The purpose of the current research was to investigate how these control adjustments are modulated by the processing demands of a primary task. To this end, the authors combined a primary task (a number comparison task: classifying digits as smaller or larger than 5) with a Simon task. Control adjustments were observed in the form of typical sequential modulations of the Simon effect. In addition, the authors found sequential modulations of the numerical distance effect and an interaction of both effects. Results suggest that not only response conflict due to interference from task-irrelevant features but also processing demands of task-relevant features determine the level of control adjustment in the subsequent trial. Since the introduction of widely available e-scooter rentals in Hamburg, Germany in June of 2019, our emergency department has seen a sharp increase in the amount of e-scooter related injuries. Despite a rising number of studies certain aspects of e-scooter mobility remain unclear. This study examines the various aspects of e-scooter associated injuries with one of the largest cohorts to date. Electronic patient records of emergency department admissions were screened for e-scooter associated injuries between June 2019 and December 2021. Patient demographic data, mechanism of injury, alcohol consumption, helmet usage, sustained injuries and utilized medical resources were recorded. Overall, 268 patients (57% male) with a median age of 30.3 years (IQR 23.3; 40.0) were included. 252 (94%) were e-scooter riders themselves, while 16 (6%) were involved in crashes associated with an e-scooter. Patients in non-rider e-scooter crashes were either cyclists who collided with e-scooter riders or older pedestrians (median age 61.2 years) who tripped over parked e-scooters. While e-scooter riders involved in a crash sustained an impact to the head or face in 58% of cases, those under the influence of alcohol fell on their head or face in 84% of cases. This resulted in a large amount of maxillofacial soft tissue lacerations and fractures. Extremity fractures and dislocations were more often recorded for the upper extremities. This study comprises one of the largest cohorts of e-scooter associated injuries to date. Older pedestrians are at risk to stumble over parked e-scooters. E-scooter crashes with riders who consumed alcohol were associated with more severe injuries, especially to the head and face. Evaporation plays an important role in the water balance on a different spatial scale. However, its direct and indirect measurements are globally scarce and accurate estimations are a challenging task. Thus the correct process approximation in modelling of the terrestrial evaporation plays a crucial part. A physically based 1D lumped soil–plant–atmosphere model (BROOK90) is applied to study the role of parameter selection and meteorological input for modelled evaporation on the point scale. Then, with the integration of the model into global, regional and local frameworks, we made cross-combinations out of their parameterization and forcing schemes to show and analyse their roles in the estimations of the evaporation. Five sites with different land uses (grassland, cropland, deciduous broadleaf forest, two evergreen needleleaf forests) located in Saxony, Germany, were selected for the study. All tested combinations showed a good agreement with FLUXNET measurements (Kling–Gupta efficiency, KGE, values 0.35–0.80 for a daily scale). For most of the sites, the best results were found for the calibrated model with in situ meteorological input data, while the worst was observed for the global setup. The setups' performance in the vegetation period was much higher than for the winter period. Among the tested setups, the model parameterization showed higher spread in performance than meteorological forcings for fields and evergreen forests sites, while the opposite was noticed in deciduous forests. Analysis of the of evaporation components revealed that transpiration dominates (up to 65 %–75 %) in the vegetation period, while interception (in forests) and soil/snow evaporation (in fields) prevail in the winter months. Finally, it was found that different parameter sets impact model performance and redistribution of evaporation components throughout the whole year, while the influence of meteorological forcing was evident only in summer months. The new spalacotheriid "symmetrodontan" Cifellitherium suderlandicum gen. et sp. nov. from the Barremian-Aptian of the Balve locality in northwestern Germany is the first record of spalacotheriids in Central Europe. The new taxon is based on one lower and two upper molars. Cifellitherium is similar to Spalacotherium, but differs by smaller stylocone and larger paraststyle on the upper molars, and a labially interrupted cingulid on the lower molar. The new dryolestid Minutolestes submersus gen. et sp. nov. is based on one lower and two upper molars of small size. Phylogenetic analysis revealed it as sister taxon of the clade comprising Laolestes, Krebsotherium, Dryolestes, and Guimarotodus. A dryolestid mandible with unevenly rooted molars and extremely worn down teeth cannot be attributed to Minutolestes submersus gen. et sp. nov. due to possessing molars twice as large in size. The mandible is assigned to a new dryolestid taxon, Beckumia sinemeckelia gen. et sp. nov., and has the dental formula 3i, 1c, 4p, 8m and a fully reduced Meckel's groove. The mandible lacks any trace of a coronoid or splenial. In the phylogenetic analysis, it appears as sister taxon of a clade comprising Achyrodon, Phascolestes, Crusafontia, and Hercynodon. The new mammals are the stratigraphically youngest European representatives of their clades. The late survival of Beckumia sinemeckelia gen. et sp. nov. and Minutolestes submersus gen. et sp. nov. is possibly the result of isolated evolution in an Early Cretaceous island environment. This finding of new spalacotheriid and dryolestid mammals from Central Europe adds to an emerging paleobiogeographic pattern that Europe was distinct from Asia in the constituents of mammalian faunas during the Barremian-Aptian. Purpose: This study aims to investigate the brand-oriented leadership of a city's mayor and city online brand communication as brand management-related antecedents of residents' city brand commitment. It thus examines if city brand managers can apply internal branding concepts from the corporate branding domain in a city branding context. Design/methodology/approach: The relationships between the brand management-related antecedents and the internal city branding (ICB) objective are tested through structural equation modeling using cross-sectional survey data of 414 residents of a German city. Findings: Both the brand-oriented leadership of the mayor in terms of acting as a role model by living the city brand and its identity and by showing commitment to the brand and the city's online brand communication in terms of its quality have positive effects on residents' city brand commitment. Moderation analyses reveal no significant differences between the path estimates for age, place of birth, duration of residency and education. However, the results differ significantly for gender. Research limitations/implications: As this study's sample is limited to only one city in Germany, further research needs to investigate the relationships in different cities and other countries to ensure the generalizability of the results. Future studies might also include other aspects of city brand communication, as well as cognitive and behavioural ICB objectives. Practical implications: To increase residents' city brand commitment, city brand managers should ensure that a city's online brand communication is adequate, complete, credible, useful and clear. Furthermore, through creating awareness for the importance of a mayor's brand-oriented leadership and through educating and training the mayor to engage in this specific form of brand-oriented transformational leadership, city brand managers can increase residents' emotional attachment with the city brand. We investigated the depth–duration relationship of maximum rainfall over all of Germany based on 16 years of radar-derived quantitative precipitation estimates (namely, RADKLIM-YW, German Meteorological Service) with a space–time resolution of 1 km 2 and 5 min. Contrary to the long-term historic records that identified a smooth power law scaling behaviour between the maximum rainfall depth and duration, our analysis revealed three distinct scaling regimes of which boundaries are approximately 1 h and 1 d. A few extraordinary events dominated a wide range of durations and deviate to the usual power law. Furthermore, the shape of the depth–duration relationship varied with the sample size of randomly selected radar pixels. A smooth scaling behaviour was identified when the sample size was small (e.g. 10 to 100), but the original three distinct scaling regimes became more apparent as the sample size increases (e.g. 1000 to 10 000). Lastly, a pixel-wise classification of the depth–duration relationship of the maximum rainfall at all individual pixels in Germany revealed three distinguishable types of scaling behaviour, clearly determined by the temporal structure of the extreme rainfall events at a pixel. Background: CPR training is recommended for secondary school students in many countries to improve bystander resuscitation and survival rates after cardiac arrest. The recommended age for implementing first aid interventions varies between studies. Methods: This study aims to examine psychological (self-efficacy, interest; primary endpoint) and physical (compression depth, rate and chest recoil) outcomes (secondary endpoint) in different age groups after a CPR intervention. A sample of 552 secondary school students from five different schools in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, was assigned to face-to-face CPR lessons held by student teachers. Participants were separated into two age groups (11-13 and 14-17 years), according to recommendations and previous evidence about appropriate training age. Time- and between-groupeffects were analyzed using t-tests between baseline and the final testing point. Results: A total of 365 questionnaires and 189 manikin recordings formed the complete dataset. No differences were found between age groups for self-efficacy, outcome expectancies and interest (p > 0.05). In both groups, self-efficacy and positive outcome expectancies improved, but negative expectancies as well as the students' interest did not. After the intervention, only the older students achieved a higher accuracy (80% vs. 60%; p < 0.05) and mean depth (62.6 vs. 53.9 mm; p < 0.05) in chest compressions but exceeding the 50-60 mm guideline. For rate and chest recoil, no significant differences were found (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Regardless of age, all students benefit from this intervention regarding an improvement in self-efficacy and chest compressions. In Zusammenarbeit zwischen dem Fraunhofer IFF und der 50Hertz wurde untersucht, inwieweit die Systeme für das Datenaufkommen im Realbetrieb bereits vorbereitet sind. Innerhalb dieses Beitrags wird die Methodik zur Untersuchung vorgestellt. Hierbei wurden sowohl die Marktkommunikation 2020 (MaKo 2020) als auch die direkte Smart-Meter-Gateway-Kommunikation untersucht. Die Ergebnisse sowie erforderlichen Maßnahmen zur Anpassung der Systeme werden präsentiert. Due to the Process of Digital Readiness for Energy Transition, taking place in Germany, the necessary systems have been deployed at the 50Hertz Transmission GmbH (50Hertz) site. Using these systems, 50Hertz prepares for managing the Smart Meter data as its role as Transmission System Operator (TSO). In cooperation between Fraunhofer IFF and 50Hertz an investigation took place, to make sure the deployed systems are ready for handling the expected amount of data in real operation. Purpose: The aim of the current study is to assess, using new technologies, the interaction of four monthly silicone hydrogel contact lenses on the ocular surface and the comfort over 15 days of use.Methods: Prospective cross-over, randomized and double-masked study including four materials (lotrafilcon-B, samfilcon-A , comfilcon-A and filcom-V3). Clinical examination was performed in the following order: tear meniscus height, first break-up of the tear film, the average time of all tear film breakup incidents, bulbar redness, limbal redness (Keratograph 5M ,Oculus, Germany); central corneal thickness (Pentacam, Oculus, Germany), thermography values (FLIR A325; FLIR Systems Inc., USA), and slit-lamp evaluations, including ocular surface staining. Finally, subjective comfort was obtained from Contact Lens Dry Eye Questionnaire-8.Results: The impact of contact lens wear on the ocular surface didn't show statistically significant changes over time except for corneal and conjunctival staining grades on day 15 compared to day 1 for the comfilcon A group (P = .003 and P = .01, respectively). Contact lens stability and impact on the ocular surface during contact lens wear didn't show statistically significant changes over time except in the case of the comfilcon A material with respect to the irritation item (P = .01).Conclusions: These results suggest that the impact of monthly silicone hydrogel contact lens materials on the ocular surface after and during contact lens wear, contact lens stability over time, and subjective comfort did not reveal any significant changes over 15 days of use for any of the materials. Forests provide important ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration. Forest landscapes are intrinsically heterogeneous—a problem for biomass and productivity assessment using remote sensing. Forest structure constitutes valuable additional information for the improved estimation of these variables. However, survey of forest structure by remote sensing remains a challenge which results mainly from the differences in forest structure metrics derived by using remote sensing compared to classical structural metrics from field data. To understand these differences, remote sensing measurements were linked with an individual-based forest model. Forest structure was analyzed by lidar remote sensing using metrics for the horizontal and vertical structures. To investigate the role of forest structure for biomass and productivity estimations in temperate forests, 25 lidar metrics of 375,000 simulated forest stands were analyzed. For the lidar-based metrics, top-of-canopy height arose as the best predictor for describing horizontal forest structure. The standard deviation of the vertical foliage profile was the best predictor for the vertical heterogeneity of a forest. Forest structure was also an important factor for the determination of forest biomass and aboveground wood productivity. In particular, horizontal structure was essential for forest biomass estimation. Predicting aboveground wood productivity must take into account both horizontal and vertical structures. In a case study based on these findings, forest structure, biomass and aboveground wood productivity are mapped for whole of Germany. The dominant type of forest in Germany is dense but less vertically structured forest stands. The total biomass of all German forests is 2.3 Gt, and the total aboveground woody productivity is 43 Mt/year. Future remote sensing missions will have the capability to provide information on forest structure (e.g., from lidar or radar). This will lead to more accurate assessments of forest biomass and productivity. These estimations can be used to evaluate forest ecosystems related to climate regulation and biodiversity protection. The ability to flexibly adapt to deviations from optimal performance is an important aspect of self-control. In the present study, the authors present first evidence that the personality trait action versus state orientation ( Kuhl, 2000) modulates the ability of adaptive control adjustments in response to experienced conflicts. Sixty-two German individuals with extreme scores on the action-state dimension performed a response interference task, that is, 31 extreme action-oriented individuals (30 females; Mage = 20.35 years) and 31 extreme state-oriented individuals (20 females; Mage = 23.23 years), respectively. Action-oriented individuals displayed a stronger conflict adaptation effect as evidenced by a stronger reduction of interference on trials following conflict. These results were further corroborated by a correlational analysis including a sample of 105 participants: the higher the score on the action-state dimension, the lower the interference effect following conflict (i.e., stronger conflict adaptation). The results provide evidence that even low-level, bottom-up-driven processes of self-control such as conflict adaptation are systematically moderated by individual differences in control modes and provide insights into the cognitive mechanisms underlying action versus state orientation. Organic agriculture, which produces commodities that can be qualitatively differentiated from conventional food products, has grown into an important market in many countries. The dynamics of commodity prices in both sectors are partly interdependent, but are also shaped by independent determinants and have rarely been studied. We analyze organic food markets and their interdependencies with conventional markets in the context of wheat markets in Germany, which have been subject to a number of fundamental changes during the last two decades. Based on institutional market characteristics, we suggest a flexible Markov-switching asymmetric time series model. We find a pronounced temporal sequence of market phases that differ in their asymmetric dynamics and the extent to which the organic price is influenced by the conventional price. In agricultural soils, the formation of soil organic matter largely depends on the carbon (C) input by crop residues and rhizodeposition, which is thus of decisive importance for the management and prediction of soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks in cropland and grassland. However, there is a remarkable lack of reliable, crop-specific C input data. We used a plant C allocation approach to estimate the C input of major crops and grassland into agricultural soils of Bavaria in southeast Germany. Historic and recent plant C allocation coefficients were estimated and C inputs were calculated for a 60-year period (1951–2010) using long-term agricultural statistics. The spatial distribution of C inputs within Bavaria was derived from county-specific statistical data. The results revealed increases of the C input by 107–139% for cereals, 173–188% for root, forage and leguminous crops and 34% for grassland in the last 60 years. This increase was related to linear yield increases until 1995 despite significant changes of plant C allocation. However, from 1995 onwards, crop yields and related C inputs stagnated, which allowed a robust estimation of recent crop-specific C input values. A total C input of 3.8–6.7 t ha −1 yr −1 was estimated for cereals, 5.2–6.3 t ha −1 yr −1 for root, forage and leguminous crops and 2.4 t ha −1 yr −1 for grassland. These amounts were partly higher compared to estimations in the literature. A generally high spatial variability of C inputs was detected within Bavaria with differences of up to 40% between adjacent counties. The results of this study could be used to optimize the C input of crop rotations and thus promote the formation of soil organic matter and C sequestration in agricultural soils on the basis of a soil carbon model. Moreover, recent estimations of C inputs could be used to model the future development of agricultural SOC stocks. A further stagnation of crop yields and the related C input under an ongoing temperature increase bears the risk of a future decrease of SOC stocks in cropland soils of Bavaria. Directed dispersal by animal vectors has been found to have large effects on the structure and dynamics of plant populations adapted to frugivory. Yet, empirical data are lacking on the potential of directed dispersal by rotational grazing of domestic animals to mediate gene flow across the landscape. Here, we investigated the potential effect of large-flock shepherding on landscape-scale genetic structure in the calcareous grassland plant Dianthus carthusianorum, whose seeds lack morphological adaptations to dispersal to animals or wind. We found a significant pattern of genetic structure differentiating population within grazed patches of three nonoverlapping shepherding systems and populations of ungrazed patches. Among ungrazed patches, we found a strong and significant effect of isolation by distance ( r = 0.56). In contrast, genetic distance between grazed patches within the same herding system was unrelated to geographical distance but significantly related to distance along shepherding routes ( r = 0.44). This latter effect of connectivity along shepherding routes suggests that gene flow is spatially restricted occurring mostly between adjacent populations. While this study used nuclear markers that integrate gene flow by pollen and seed, the significant difference in the genetic structure between ungrazed patches and patches connected by large-flock shepherding indicates the potential of directed seed dispersal by sheep across the landscape. Sequestration of atmospheric carbon (C) in soils through improved management of forest and agricultural land is considered to have high potential for global CO2 mitigation. However, the potential of soils to sequester soil organic carbon ( SOC) in a stable form, which is limited by the stabilization of SOC against microbial mineralization, is largely unknown. In this study, we estimated the C sequestration potential of soils in southeast Germany by calculating the potential SOC saturation of silt and clay particles according to Hassink [ Plant and Soil 191 (1997) 77] on the basis of 516 soil profiles. The determination of the current SOC content of silt and clay fractions for major soil units and land uses allowed an estimation of the C saturation deficit corresponding to the long-term C sequestration potential. The results showed that cropland soils have a low level of C saturation of around 50% and could store considerable amounts of additional SOC. A relatively high C sequestration potential was also determined for grassland soils. In contrast, forest soils had a low C sequestration potential as they were almost C saturated. A high proportion of sites with a high degree of apparent oversaturation revealed that in acidic, coarse-textured soils the relation to silt and clay is not suitable to estimate the stable C saturation. A strong correlation of the C saturation deficit with temperature and precipitation allowed a spatial estimation of the C sequestration potential for Bavaria. In total, about 395 Mt CO2-equivalents could theoretically be stored in A horizons of cultivated soils - four times the annual emission of greenhouse gases in Bavaria. Although achieving the entire estimated C storage capacity is unrealistic, improved management of cultivated land could contribute significantly to CO2 mitigation. Changing linkages between agricultural and energy markets have attracted considerable attention in research and policy discussions during recent years. As one of the largest biofuel markets worldwide, the German biodiesel market is of particular interest. It has grown rapidly since the beginning of the new millennium, with this growth being driven mainly by political interventions. Vertical price transmission channels along the biodiesel supply chain are analyzed in this study. We examine the relationship between diesel and biodiesel prices, and between rapeseed oil, soy oil, and biodiesel prices between 2002 and 2008. Due to pronounced changes in market conditions and the policy framework, a regime-dependent Markov-switching vector error-correction model is used. The regimes are characterized by markedly different price adjustment behaviors. Before 2005 and from late 2007 onward, a regime characterized by the strong orientation of biodiesel prices toward diesel prices dominates. Between 2005 and 2007, biodiesel and rapeseed oil prices are mutually interdependent. Objective: In German inpatient psychosomatics per diem lump sums will be introduced as reimbursement rates by 2013. It was the aim to calculate total inpatient costs per case for the psychosomatic treatment of patients with anorexia nervosa and to identify cost predictors. Method: The sample comprised of 127 inpatients. Cost calculation was executed from the hospital's perspective, mainly using microcosting. Medical records provided data on patient characteristics and individual resource use. Two generalized linear models with gamma distribution and log link function were estimated to determine cost predictors by means of demographic data, comorbidities, and body-mass-index at admission. Results: Inpatient costs amounted to 4,647 €/6,831 US$ per case (standard deviation 3,714 €/5,460 US$).The admission BMI and 'Disorders of Adult Personality and Behavior' were significant cost predictors ( p < 0.05). In fragmented landscapes, plant species persistence depends on functional connectivity in terms of pollen flow to maintain genetic diversity within populations, and seed dispersal to re-colonize habitat patches following local extinction. Connectivity in plants is commonly modeled as a function of the physical distance between patches, without testing alternative dispersal vectors. In addition, pre- and post-dispersal processes such as seed production and establishment are likely to affect patch colonization rates. Here, we test alternative models of potential functional connectivity with different assumptions on source patch effects (patch area and species occupancy) and dispersal (relating to distance among patches, matrix composition, and sheep grazing routes) against empirical patch colonization rates at the community level (actual functional connectivity), accounting for post-dispersal effects in terms of structural elements providing regeneration niches for establishment. Our analyses are based on two surveys in 1989 and in 2009 of 48 habitat specialist plants in 62 previously abandoned calcareous grassland patches in the Southern Franconian Alb in Bavaria, Germany. The best connectivity model S, as identified by multi-model inference, combined distance along sheep grazing routes including consistently and intermittently grazed patches with mean species occupancy in 1989 as a proxy for pre-dispersal effects. Community-level patch colonization rates depended to equal degrees on connectivity and post-dispersal process. Our study highlights that actual functional connectivity of calcareous grassland communities cannot be approximated by structural connectivity based on physical distance alone, and modeling of functional connectivity needs to consider pre- and post-dispersal processes. An overview of the result of the training strategies which do not provide significant effect on jumping and sprinting abilities is provided. • Fog deposition rises with altitude. • Annual sum of fog deposition varies a lot between a stand and a catchment. • The fog deposition altitude relation is different for each mountain. • No temporal trend was found in the fog deposition over the last 70 years. Fog deposition depends strongly on location and orographic setting. Even if the absolute amount can be small at some locations, it could play a decisive role. This is also true for Germany. In the lowlands, the annual amount of fog precipitation is in the range of a few mm per year, in the higher altitudes of the low mountain ranges a few hundred mm per year. In this article, we estimated the fog deposition based on the REAL-Fog model for Germany at daily time steps and one kilometre spatial resolution for a 70-year period for the years 1949 to 2018. These results were compared with another fog deposition modelling approach, station measurements and water balance modelling for different catchments in our study region. Comparing the results gives quite an interesting insight and outlook to the challenges to face in the future. Forests play an important role in climate regulation due to carbon sequestration. However, a deeper understanding of forest carbon flux dynamics is often missing due to a lack of information about forest structure and species composition, especially for non-even-aged and species-mixed forests. In this study, we integrated field inventory data of a species-mixed deciduous forest in Germany into an individual-based forest model to investigate daily carbon fluxes and to examine the role of tree size and species composition for stand productivity. This approach enables to reproduce daily carbon fluxes derived from eddy covariance measurements (R2 of 0.82 for gross primary productivity and 0.77 for ecosystem respiration). While medium-sized trees (stem diameter 30–60 cm) account for the largest share (66%) of total productivity at the study site, small (0–30 cm) and large trees (>60 cm) contribute less with 8.3% and 25.5% respectively. Simulation experiments indicate that vertical stand structure and shading influence forest productivity more than species composition. Hence, it is important to incorporate small-scale information about forest stand structure into modelling studies to decrease uncertainties of carbon dynamic predictions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Convective rainfall can cause dangerous flash floods within less than six hours. Thus, simple approaches are required for issuing quick warnings. The flash flood guidance (FFG) approach pre-calculates rainfall levels (thresholds) potentially causing critical water levels for a specific catchment. Afterwards, only rainfall and soil moisture information are required to issue warnings. This study applied the principle of FFG to the Wernersbach Catchment (Germany) with excellent data coverage using the BROOK90 water budget model. The rainfall thresholds were determined for durations of 1 to 24 h, by running BROOK90 in "inverse" mode, identifying rainfall values for each duration that led to exceedance of critical discharge (fixed value). After calibrating the model based on its runoff, we ran it in hourly mode with four precipitation types and various levels of initial soil moisture for the period 1996–2010. The rainfall threshold curves showed a very high probability of detection (POD) of 91% for the 40 extracted flash flood events in the study period, however, the false alarm rate (FAR) of 56% and the critical success index (CSI) of 42% should be improved in further studies. Often detailed point information from future climate projections is needed for hydrological and other impact models. Therefore, two problems must be solved, first the bias correction is needed for the unbiased application of projected data and second the general scale gap between gridded model data and pointwise observation data has to be taken into account. The latter is often ignored, but contributes systematically to the model bias as model output is often referring to mean values or budget closing on grid level, while measurements are typically point measurements by nature. We present an approach, which solves the aforementioned problems by applying a parametric quantile mapping (QM) with a special focus on extremes in precipitation. We selected 16 model combinations of the multi-model ensemble matrix of the projects Euro-Cordex (Coordinated Downscaling Experiment – European Domain) and ReKliEs-De (Regional climate projections ensemble for Germany) as climate projections. Since the study area is the Free State of Saxony in Germany, 17 observation stations from the reference dataset by ReKIS (Referenzdatensatz V1.0 (10/2017), Regional climate information system – www.rekis.org) are used as the observation dataset. We fitted two parametric distribution functions with the maximum likelihood method to datasets of various situations (i.e. seasons, stations and model combinations). First, the often used Gamma distribution is fitted to the datasets. Second, a dynamical mixed Gamma and generalized Pareto distribution is fitted, to be able to describe the extremes more in detail. The different correction functions are generated to correct the bias between gridded model data and pointwise observation data. A cross-validation is carried out to evaluate the performance of the different fitted distributions. Therefore, 10 years from 1971-2015 are picked randomly as validation period and the remaining years are used for the calibration of the fitting process. This procedure is repeated 30 times for each single situation. Subsequently, the Akaike information criterion (AIC) and the Cramér-von Mises criterion (CvM) are calculated as skill scores to select the most appropriate distribution for each situation. However, the analysis of the skill scores shows different pattern of the chosen distributions, the AIC and CvM often suggest different distributions. Hence, to analyse which skill score delivers the better bias corrected model data, both skill score decisions are used to correct the model dataset for each situation to generate two corrected model datasets for the period 1971-2015. The final evaluation is performed by a comparison of quantile-quantile plots of the two corrected model datasets with respect to the observation data. The analysis shows that both distributions have their entitlement and that more reliable results can be generated, if not only one distribution is prescribed for each situation. Precipitation usually exhibits scale-invariant behaviour on a large range of temporal and spatial scales which has been explained physically as well as empirically in many studies. Here, we investigate intensity-duration relationships from radar data for Germany from 2001 to 2016. A newly released radar composite product from the German Meteorological Service (Radolan-YW, DWD 2018) with a resolution of 5 minutes and 1x1 km² was used for the analysis. After a conversion of the whole raster data set into time series, the maximum intensities per duration were derived with 1) moving window, 2) fixed window, and 3) interpolated fixed window aggregation. Out of the data set, the maximum and percentiles of maximums were plotted against their duration and compared with existing theoretical as well as empirical relationships from point observations. The results show unexpected scale breaks after around 1 hour, which suggests a non-consistent scaling behaviour of the radar data. Background: The problem of identifying idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (IDC) patients who are at risk of sudden death is still unsolved. The presence of autonomic imbalance in patients with IDC might predict sudden death and tachyarrhythmic events. The aim of this study was to analyze the suitability of blood pressure variability (BPV) compared to heart rate variability (HRV) for noninvasive risk stratification in IDC patients. Methods: Continuous noninvasive blood pressure and high-resolution electrocardiogram were recorded from 91 IDC patients for 30 minutes. During a median follow-up period of 28 months (range: [17-38] months), 14 patients died due to sudden death or necessary resuscitation due to a life-threatening arrhythmia. HRV and BPV analyses were performed in time domain, frequency domain, and nonlinear dynamics. Using the Mann-Whitney U test and Cox regression, we estimated the accuracy of clinical and nonclinical parameters in discriminating high-risk from low-risk patients. Results: Dynamics of blood pressure regulation was significantly changed in high-risk patients, indicating an increased BPV. BPV indexes from nonlinear symbolic dynamics revealed significant univariate (sensitivity: 85.7%; specificity 77.9%; area under receiver-operator characteristics [ROC] curve: 87.8%) differences. In an optimum multivariate set consisting of two clinical indexes (left ventricular end-diastolic diameter, New York Heart Association) and one nonlinear index (symbolic dynamics), highly significant differences between low- and high-risk IDC groups were estimated (sensitivity of 92.9%, specificity of 86.5%, and area under ROC curve of 95.3%). Conclusion: Diastolic BPV indexes, especially those from symbolic dynamics, appear to be useful for risk stratification of sudden death in patients with IDC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Forests play a crucial role in climate regulation and societal well-being. Despite their significance, the increasing frequency of droughts poses a severe threat to forest ecosystems, impacting carbon sequestration and forest stability. In Germany, the unprecedented 2018–2020 drought resulted in extensive tree mortality and damaged wood volume, with lasting effects observed in subsequent years. As climate models project a continuation of such droughts, understanding the impact of droughts on forests becomes imperative. However, it is unclear how forests will evolve in the future if the drought duration continues to increase. This study employs a forest model to analyze the impact of droughts across various German forest types, focusing on the duration of drought periods and their influence on forest productivity. By utilizing an individual-based forest growth model and national forest inventories, the study addresses critical knowledge gaps regarding the effects of multi-year droughts on biomass and productivity across various forest types, including monocultures and mixed forests. The simulations consider a drought-induced large increase in tree mortality caused by factors such as pest infestations and diseases across Germany. Our simulation results reveal a declining aboveground biomass and gross primary production (GPP) for all simulated drought scenarios, including the three- and six-year drought. GPP is reduced by 46 % in the 3-year drought scenario and by 58 % in the 6-year drought scenario. Notably, prolonged droughts lead to cumulative losses, with a saturation effect in drought scenarios exceeding eight years. Forest stand composition influences these impacts, with greater GPP losses in low-biomass stands. Furthermore, different forest types exhibit varying responses. Monocultures and even-sized forests (mostly planted and managed forests) are more sensitive to drought than mixed and uneven-sized forests. The results provide valuable insights into forest resilience and ecosystem responses to increasingly frequent and prolonged droughts, highlighting the importance of understanding the effects of drought on monocultures and mixed forests to inform future forest management strategies. In some catchments, especially in low mountain ranges, fog deposition can make a considerable contribution to the water budget. Yet, fog deposition is usually not measured, hence gaps between observed and expected discharge in the water balance of these catchments arise. These gaps are ignored, or either corrected by calibration, like by decreasing the evaporation or corrected with general approaches like an additional fog water input depending on the elevation.We present an approach, which is capable to estimate physically justified the fog deposition in dependence on the vegetation. The method requires only limited data and meteorological standard measurements are used. The calculations are done on a spatial basis and have been performed for Germany. First, liquid water content (lwc) at ground level is derived and interpolated to grid cells. The temporal resolution of the lwc-product is 1 hour and the spatial resolution 1 kilometre per grid cell. Second, deposition velocities based on measurements are determined for the study area. Last, the fog deposition can be estimated from the lwc-product, the deposition velocity and the actual vegetation properties (i.e. height of vegetation, Leaf Area Index).Depending on the catchment area, the additional precipitation input due to fog precipitation contributes up to 50 % to the annual precipitation. This is a considerable portion of the overall input and needs to be discussed, in order to avoid misleading effects of water budget model calibration in mountain ranges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
