Volcanic structures are inhomogeneous on a number of scales. Quantifying whether such inhomogeneities result in a physical and mechanical anisotropy is important to improve large-scale volcano and volcano-geothermal modelling. It is, however, currently challenging to account for such anisotropy because there are very few experimental studies that quantify the physical and mechanical property anisotropy expected for volcanic rocks. Here, we measure the porosity, permeability, P-wave velocity, thermal properties, uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), and static Young's modulus of samples from five trachyandesite lavas from the Chaîne des Puys (Massif Central, France) that have been cored in three arbitrary orthogonal directions. We show, using X-ray computed tomography, that the pores in the most anisotropic lava are oblate spheroids, with a major axis 2−5 times larger than their minor axis, that have a shape preferred orientation. This lava is an order of magnitude less permeable, has a P-wave velocity ~25% lower, and has a UCS and Young's modulus ~50% lower when measured perpendicular to the major pore axis. The observed physical and mechanical anisotropy is therefore the result of a pore shape preferred orientation. We conclude that, alongside large-scale sources of anisotropy such as stratified lavas, modellers should also consider incorporating a physical and mechanical anisotropy in the volcanic rocks forming a particular layer in the development of models that seek to incorporate greater complexity. Incorporating additional complexities in modelling, where and when possible, will provide the most accurate predictions and therefore the most reliable information for a given volcano or geothermal reservoir. In the context of the energy transition, new construction materials are emerging, notably bio-based materials such as wood concrete. This paper investigates the hygrothermal performance of walls constructed with wood–cement concrete. First, the thermal properties of wooden concrete, namely thermal conductivity, effusivity, and diffusivity, are experimentally characterized in both dry and wet conditions. Second, in situ measurements are carried out on a house in Lyon, a city in France, constructed with mono-layered wood–cement walls. This involves monitoring the temperature and relative humidity levels both inside and outside the building, as well as at three distinct positions within the wood walls over a 6-month period (from 20 April 2023 to 20 October 2023). The hygrothermal analysis at the center of the wall reveals that the wood wall effectively moderates fluctuations in the external temperature and relative humidity. Following this, a numerical study is performed to check the reliability of the adopted Reduced Heat, Air, and Mass (HAM) model to reproduce the hygrothermal performance of the wood–cement wall. The results show a strong agreement between the simulated and measured data, confirming the applicability of the 'Reduced HAM' model for the prediction of the hygrothermal behavior of wood–cement walls. The use of bio-based building materials is a sustainable opportunity to reduce the environmental footprint associated with the construction sector. The achievement of this objective is primely achieved through the valorisation of vegetable waste, resulting in a reduction in the use of primary source material and waste generation. Within the scope of this study, the focus is directed towards research concerning the thermal, acoustic, and fire behaviour properties of bio-based building materials. This study conducts a comprehensive bibliometric analysis encompassing all documents meeting these criteria within the Scopus database, spanning two decades, from 2003 to 2023. The comprehensive analysis covered a total of 1081 documents, which were analysed. This analysis furnishes insight into various facets, including the temporal evolution of publications, journals boasting the highest publication counts and impact, influential research areas, countries with substantial contributions and their collaborative patterns, noteworthy affiliations, prolific authors, and seminal documents, alongside recurrent keywords. The objective of this comprehensive study is to provide a detailed analysis of the documents published up to the present day, in order to identify research gaps and potential opportunities in this field, to assist new researchers interested in the subject. The analysis reveals that bio-based building materials have gained substantial attention over the past decade. With each passing year, the published documents have increased their impact and become more specific, underscoring the growing importance of this subject. This evolution has also fostered a broader network of researchers engaged in this field. Most amphibians use both aquatic and terrestrial habitats. While the aquatic phase attracted considerable interest, terrestrial habitat use is often less investigated. We studied diurnal refuge selection in the Midwife toad in Western central France. We used a factorial design and tested the effect of refuge type (wood versus rubber boards) and substrate (wet sawdust versus bare soil). Most animals were observed under refuges with sawdust substrate. An interaction between refuge type and temperature was detected with higher presence probability under rubber refuges at low temperature. Abstract: Numerous sorts of evidence of fires were observed in the cave of Les Fraux (Dordogne, France) and in particular the effects of fire on sediment were studied for a better understanding of their use centuries ago. Our present objective is the evaluation of the firing intensity by determining the past temperature (paleotemperature) attained by the topmost sediment of the archaeological fires. The principle of paleotemperature determination is based on the thermoluminescence (TL) properties of quartz and the magnetic susceptibility of the sediment. By comparing the TL signal of anciently heated quartz to the TL signal of thermal references made in the laboratory, we were able to obtain a maximal equivalent temperature attained for each sample extracted from ancient fires. The magnetic susceptibility (previously measured on the hearth surface) could thus be estimated as a function of temperature. The main result of this study is the temperature mapping of the hearth which can be used as meaningful information about the ancient firing intensity. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: We report on a 3-month long time series of in-situ measurements of the effective thermal conductivity (k eff) of snow at 6 heights in an Alpine snowpack in the Mont-Blanc mountain range, France, at an altitude of 2400m. Measurements were carried out automatically every 2days using heated-needle probes embedded in the snowpack. The experimental procedure used is presented in detail and demonstrates the applicability of single heated-needle probes for the evaluation of k eff in snow, both for long-term measurements within the snowpack and occasional use in the field. Results based on 139 automatically collected data show k eff values ranging between 0.04 and 0.35Wm−1 K−1, and a consistent pattern of effective thermal conductivity increase throughout the measurements campaign. The temporal rate of change of k eff varies up to 0.01W m− 1 K−1day−1, with maximum values just after snowfall. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract  Numerical models of the Aix-les-Bains thermal aquifer (France) were used to investigate the influence of Quaternary paleoclimatic events on the current thermal state of the groundwater. Initial numerical tests were successful in that present-day fluid flows (heads and flow rates) and the resulting velocities were compatible with residence time data. Water flowing through an aquifer cools the rock mass; therefore, the rate of water flow governs the outlets temperature. For the Aix-les-Bains aquifer, applying present-day flow rates to the entire history of the aquifer leads to much more substantial cooling of the rock mass than is indicated by the outlets temperature (i.e. present-day flow rates are 10 times too high). This suggests that the aquifer may have gone through alternating functioning phases, during which the rock mass cooled, and blocked phases, during which the aquifer reheated. Other results indicate that the main parameters affecting thermal behavior during a functioning phase are the total inflow volume, rather than individual inflow rates, and the initial heat field. As phenomena linked to glaciation can lead to the blocking of infiltration zones and aquifer outlets, the findings suggest that the hypothesis of intermittent aquifer functioning related to glaciations is compatible with the current thermal field. The article presents a study on the possible effects of stormwater infiltration on the distribution of urban groundwater temperature by examining differences in water temperature in stormwater infiltration basins (SIB) in Lyon, France. Accordingly, the warming of groundwater is considered as one of the main environmental problems and the said issue has its meager and underdeveloped documentations. The study reveals that the significant effects of SIB to groundwater include decreased oxygen solubility and increased microbial respiration in the soil.

With the increasing share of intermittent renewable energy sources in the energy mix, demand-side flexibility is likely to play a key role in the future. For buildings, flexibility is defined as the ability to shift their energy consumption away from "peak periods" i.e. high-demand periods of the electrical network. In France, these episodes occur mainly during the wintertime due to the significant demand for space heating. To achieve flexibility objectives, we explore an indirect control strategy at district scale by adjusting the dwelling thermostat during peak periods. The study is conducted over 337 dwellings in order to better predict the load curve by taking advantage of the aggregation effect. Three main research questions are addressed in relation to the assessment of flexibility potential: (i) the effect of aggregation, (ii) the identification of the most influencing factors, including occupant behavior, and (iii) the quantification of uncertainties. Using an urban building energy modeling tool populated with various national data sources (building envelope, energy class of equipment, etc), we perform a sensitivity analysis on 22 parameters representing the geometry, the appliances, the building characteristics, the occupants, and the grid. The output indicator is the average power shifted during the flexibility (or demand response) event. From this analysis, 7 parameters appear as being the most influential. A regression analysis on these parameters is performed, depending on both the duration of the event and the typology of district. The results show that the duration of the flexibility event and the occupant pre-selected temperature change are the most influential parameters. It results to approximately ± 90 W of uncertainty on an average potential of 290 W of shiftable power per household in a recent district. Furthermore, the occupants are highlighted as making a significant contribution to flexibility. Finally, we observed that the thermal properties investigated with the study of an old fabric district play a key role. Accidental exposure to hot water steam is a potential risk in the French Navy, and particularly on nuclear submarines or ships. Direct human exposure to this extreme environment during an accident leads to death in a short time. In order to protect the crew members of the French Navy, a laboratory was created at the Institut de Médecine Navale du Service de Santé des Armées (IMNSSA). A set of tools was developed to study the effects of exposure to hot water steam atmospheres on human physiology and on the protective capacities of textile fabrics and equipment. A testing device allows the quantification of the protective capacities of fabrics under steam stresses. A thermal manikin and a steam climatic chamber allow the evaluation of the protective capacities of equipment. The tests on fabrics and on garments were in good agreement. Water vapour impermeable fabrics and garments provide greater protection in steamy conditions. Moreover, the thicker the sample or garment, the higher the protection it gives. Care should be taken to verify that fabrics keep their thermal characteristics under steam stress. These characteristics, measured under standard comfortable conditions, are not always indicative of the protective abilities of the fabrics under steamy conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fractured aquifers are known to be very heterogeneous with complex flow path geometries. Their characterization and monitoring remain challenging despite the importance to better understand their behavior at all spatial and temporal scales. Heat and correspondingly temperature data have gained much interest in recent years and are often used as a tracer for characterizing groundwater flows. In the current work, a fast computer code is developed using Ramey and Hassan and Kabir analytical solutions which converts the temperature profile to the flow rate profile along the borehole. The method developed is validated through numerical simulations. A global sensitivity study recognizes the media thermal properties as the most influential parameters. For testing the method in the field, fiber-optic distributed temperature sensing (FO-DTS) data were used to monitor the dynamic behavior of fractured aquifers at the borehole scale at the Ploemeur-Guidel field site in Brittany, France. DTS data are used to infer the flow rates in the different sections of a fractured wellbore (flow profile) and calculate the contribution of each fracture to the total flow. DTS data were acquired for about three days in three different hydraulic conditions corresponding to two different ambient flow conditions and one pumping condition. Flow profiling using distributed temperature data matches satisfactorily with results from heat-pulse flow metering performed in parallel for cross-checking. Moreover, flow profiling reveals the daily variations of ambient flow in this fractured borehole. Furthermore, it shows that during ambient flowing conditions, shallow and deep fractures contribute roughly equally to the total flow while during the pumping condition, the deepest fractures contribute more to the total flow, suggesting a possible reorganization of flow and hydraulic heads depending on the hydraulic conditions. Thus, although the proposed method (DTS data and proposed framework) may be costlier and is based on indirect characterization through temperature measurements, it provides real-time monitoring of complex fracture interactions and recharge processes in fractured media. Thus, this method allows for a full analysis of the temporal behavior of the system with a simple and fast analytical model. Furthermore, thanks to its narrow width, DTS can be used and installed in boreholes for long-term monitoring while heat-pulse flow metering may lead to head losses in the borehole and may not be always possible depending on some borehole conditions. One of the limitations of the approach proposed is the proper knowledge of the thermal properties of media required to infer the flow rate from the temperature. Nevertheless, surface rate measurement can be useful to constrain these properties and reduce the flow profiling uncertainty. Thus, the method proposed appears to be an interesting and complementary method for characterizing borehole flows and groundwater dynamics in fractured media such as for instance, monitoring the recharge dynamic. The in situ estimation of the thermal properties of existing building wall materials is a computationally expensive procedure. Its cost is highly proportional to the duration of measurements. To decrease the computational cost a methodology using a D-optimum criterion to select an optimal experiment duration is proposed. This criterion allows to accurately estimate the thermal properties of the wall using a reduced measurement plan. The methodology is applied to estimate the thermal conductivity of the three-layer wall of a historical building in France. Three different experiment sequences (one, three and seven days) and three spatial distributions of the thermal conductivity are investigated. Then using the optimal duration of observations the thermal conductivity is estimated using the hybrid optimization method. This article presents information on the research papers published in the September 9, 2004, issue of the European Journal of Applied Physiology. This issue contains a series of 27 short papers that were presented at the 5th International Manikin and Modelling Meeting (5I3 M) held in Strasbourg (France) in September 2003. The meeting was organized by Professor Victor Candas of the National Centre for Scientific Research at CEPA, Strasbourg. Several technical and physiological aspects of thermal effects on and temperature regulation in humans were discussed at length.
