In 2020, hundreds of sub-national government officials and Chinese Communist Party cadres undertook a months-long experiment in livestreaming and social commerce. These sectors are among the most dynamic in the Chinese internet economy and culture, yet Chinese officials have generally resisted engaging with popular and celebrity cultures, even as institutions have begun to expand and modernize their digital operations. Why, then, did a substantial cohort of local officials undertake this experiment? The proximate reason was that they wanted to help local producers hit by the pandemic and to meet their own pending poverty alleviation targets. However, the significance of the case is broader, reflecting the central state and Party's revised thinking on political communications in an era of internet celebrity and self-media and the propensity for local officials to innovate and experiment in the field of digital and popular communication. Investigating empirically how and how effectively livestreaming was employed at the local level helps us to illuminate these dynamics. To facilitate the study, we investigated how officials understood and performed internet celebrity through in-person semi-structured interviews and a three-month virtual ethnographic study. These days, digital art has substantially improved painting art in China's new media period through modern technology and specialized software, which has generated various digital artworks with painting effects, demonstrating their aesthetic, commercial, and cultural worth. As a result, designers must actively investigate intelligently linked and content-diverse techniques to innovate and improve digital media art. This investigation will allow the extraction of pivotal role of digital media communication and drives visual art to new heights in the modern digitized era. Based on this motivation, this paper tries to analyze the application of new media digital technology in painting creation using big data. The major goal is to obtain insights into artists' behavior using behavioral habits and a morphological algorithm in digital painting. The study investigates the design process of digital painting by analyzing the habitual forms displayed by diverse painting user groups and integrating them with user experience design concepts. Two experimental methodologies are used to investigate painting user behavior: the interview method and the observation method. The observation approach collects comprehensive user behavior data to develop a habit form model that includes a both virtual and real activity. This model employs a hierarchical scheme emphasizing various behavior aspects and concepts throughout user interactions and painting system operations. The interview method, on the other hand, captures the psychological activities involved in user behavior decision-making. The study discovers and decomposes the traits specific to these characters by defining painted characters, developing their behavior sets, and making interactive decisions. The learned information and experience are then applied in interactive decision-making processes. Based on these findings, prototype development includes explicit and implicit interaction prototypes, with usability tests determining whether specific roles are included in the design. Throughout the study process, fuzzy mapping associations are built, and behavior mappings are labeled with varying relationship proportions, providing critical data for the habit form model's construction. The paper uses new digital media technology to create paintings and experiments with 50 randomly selected persons. Forty-four participants are well-known authors on major painting websites, with the remaining six being interviewed as professional painters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the digital economy's impact on rural household consumption upgrading. Existing studies remain mainly at the level of rural consumption scale and rarely address the consumption structure. The specific impact of the development of the digital economy on rural consumption upgrading and its mechanisms of action deserves in-depth study and consideration. We analyzed the related content using the fixed-effect model, the instrumental variable method (IV), the mediation effect model, and three-year panel data from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS). This study found that, at the scale level, the digital economy contributes to expanding rural household consumption. At the structural level, the digital economy significantly increases the share of enjoyment-oriented household consumption but has no significant effect on development-oriented consumption. Income is an important transmission mechanism for the digital economy to improve rural household consumption. Besides, the impact of the digital economy on the upgrading of rural consumption varies according to income level and age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article considers the ways in which the super-sticky all-in-one platform WeChat acts as the coordinator of a polymedia environment – and not just part of the polymedia environment – in mediating intercultural romantic relationships in the Greater Bay Area of China. Based on qualitative interviews, the article explores how WeChat coordinates a diverse range of digital communication tools for typical intercultural couples (Chinese women and foreign men) to mediate and maintain intimacy. The article contends that WeChat mainly derives its coordinator legitimacy and power from the government's prohibition of non-Chinese social media, WeChat's multi-functionality and its 'local' nature – Chinese language, social networking capacities and connectivity to other Chinese applications. Finally, this article finds that the power asymmetry caused by WeChat coordinating ecosystem of converged communication has significantly empowered middle-class Chinese women to take control of their intimate intercultural relationships. Research limitations and theoretical implications are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research Findings: Given that kindergartens are essential in sustaining children's education during the COVID-19 lockdown, this study investigates kindergarten-oriented educational practice during the initial class suspension (February–June 2020) in China. Articles published via twenty Chinese kindergartens' WeChat official subscription accounts during this period and relevant policy documents were collected and analyzed. This study found that during the class suspension, China's kindergartens were able to continue providing education by adding the topic of COVID-19 to the curriculum, remaining focused on subject-related learning, utilizing digital technologies as a communication platform, and assigning different roles to parents to support children's learning at home. However, activities prescribed by teachers and kindergartens were generally teacher-directed and structured, which led to the marginalization of children's voices and play. Practice or Policy: As kindergarten prescribed teaching and learning activities misalign with the "broad definition of learning" encouraged by macro-level documents, the policy-practice gap implies that: i) teachers could explore how digital technologies could be combined with child-centered activities in online learning; ii) parents need supports for extending children's learning and play at home; iii) policy-makers should provide more detailed guidelines and practical suggestions for teachers to support learning, including the post-COVID period. The emergence of the Internet and social media provides a new platform for information diffusion, promoting the interaction among relatively independent participants in the opinion market and changing the balance of the intrinsic mechanism and external dynamics based on political communication. In this way, it is necessary to investigate the new interactive landscape of political communication and political discourse regarding digital media. In this study, we conduct a social and semantic network analysis of the dissemination and public opinion generation landscape of the COVID-19 "New Ten Articles" policy communication by the Chinese government, exploring the network relationships and emotional value interactions behind the contact of a new public policy in China. The results show that, in the political communication system, the influence of information's position in the communication field has surpassed the information source impact, and the power of network opinion leaders is significant; the policy communication network presents a situation of "identity status circle" division, and the information circle connection presents a trend of fracture and barrier thickening, which may cause policy information alienation and social opinion polarization risk; the imbalance between policy information supply and public demand is further enhanced, and the negative emotion "cloud" is distributed on a scale and condenses into grassroots social governance pressure; and the content released by some key opinion leaders, experts, online media, and local mainstream media accounts is significantly correlated with network emotions. These emotions continue to spread in subsequent discussions, and to some extent, influence the formation process of political public opinion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CULTURAL capital ,COGNITIVE ability ,SOCIAL capital ,EDUCATIONAL relevance ,DIGITAL communications ,CULTURAL competence - Abstract
Past researchers examined how an individual's social as well as cultural exposure and experiences impact the educational excellence of a learner towards global digital communication. It is essential to recognize the structural relationship of educational institutions as they seem to influence the learner's education learning outcome in the context of digitizing the global communication. Hence, this research study investigates the relationship between social and cultural capital orientation of the learners, learner's cognitive ability, and learner's family roots. For this, the study adopts descriptive correlational research design which identifies, describes, and explains the natural relationships between the variables. The study uses the following instruments to gather the data from 387 respondents: the Social and Cultural Capital Questionnaire (SCCQ) and the Otis-Lennon Scholastic Ability tests (OLSAT). The research subjects of the study are college graduate students selected from Universities in China. With literacy as the highest factor, the study found that the participants demonstrate higher levels of social and cultural capital orientation. Further, the participant's cognitive ability is found to be mediocre. It was also observed that participant's parent's education influenced learner's educational achievements in terms of cultural and social competence. Likewise, the study found that global social-cultural competence and literary practices are related to learner's cognitive level. In addition, family income is identified as the variable that affects learner's cognitive ability as well as social-cultural orientation. Finally, the study discusses the implications and proposed suggestions for future research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DIGITAL communications , *INTERNET censorship , *NEW business enterprises , *LOCAL government , *DIGITAL technology , *COMPETITION (Biology) ,ECONOMIC conditions in China - Abstract
In the current digital era, crucial questions include whether and how nondemocratic regimes retain information control in the face of proliferating new communication technologies. The scholarship has long cited China as a prime example of how authoritarian regimes implement internet censorship. Echoing emergent studies that have called attention to the highly fragmented nature of China's censorship agencies, which operate at different government levels, this research addresses local censorship agencies and their practices. Combining participatory observations and in-depth interviews conducted in a district in H City, one of China's digital economy hubs, this research explores how the local censorship regime deploys soft forms of maintaining control over information. Based on an institutional approach, the findings show that the local censorship regime has adopted proactive strategies to build a reciprocal relationship with local news start-ups, forming a variant of 'contingent symbiosis'. The local censorship regime uses policy and economic stimulus to co-opt news start-ups, inducing them to distance themselves from politically sensitive issues and local negative news and boost local propaganda agendas. These internet organisations have attempted to sustain positive relationships with the local censorship regime to acquire government resources and patronage, which would ensure their stable operation and survival under stiff competition in a precarious institutional environment. This research further explains the conditions of fragmented governance and platformisation under which this contingent symbiosis forms and the routinised practices that sustain it. This relational governance is covert and brings new challenges to the free flow of information. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Social media infuses modern relationships with vitality and brings a series of information dissemination with subjective consciousness. Studies have indicated that official Chinese media channels are transforming their communication style from didactic hard persuasion to softened emotional management in the digital era. However, previous studies have rarely provided valid empirical evidence for the communicational transformation. The study fills the gap by providing a longitudinal time-series analysis to reveal the pattern of communication of Chinese digital Chinese official media from 2019 to 2022. Method: The study crawler collected 43,259 posts from the People’s Daily’s Weibo account from 2019 to 2021. The study analyzed the textual data with using trained artificial intelligence models. Results: This study explored the practices of the People’s Daily’s Weibo account from 2019 to 2021, COVID-19 is hardly normalized as it is still used as the justification for extraordinary measures in China. This study confirmed that People’s Daily’s Weibo account posts are undergoing softenization transformation, with the use of soft news, positive energy promotion, and the embedding of sentiment. Although the outburst of COVID-19 temporarily increased the media’s use of hard news, it only occur at the initial stage of the pandemic. Emotional posts occupy a nonnegligible amount of the People’s Daily Weibo content. However, the majority of posts are emotionally neutral and contribute to shaping the authoritative image of the party press. Discussion: Overall, the People’s Daily has softened their communication style on digital platforms and used emotional mobilization, distraction, and timely information provision to balance the political logic of building an authoritative media agency and the media logic of constructing audience relevance. In this introductory essay, the editors consider the current challenges in understanding a networked China. We consider how the digital media landscape has changed just since an earlier collection of research in 2015, subtitled 'global dynamics of digital media and civic engagement.' We take up this orienting concept of civic engagement to explore emerging mediated spaces for cultural production through global connectivities. Beyond an area studies contribution, we focus on China more broadly as a complex global assemblage: an intersection of technology, norms, and socio-cultural structures. Our contributors were invited to consider 'what' and 'where' is China, and 'how do we know China?' Along with logistical challenges of fieldwork involving constraints of geopolitics and pandemic, we encouraged an epistemic reflexivity around reliance on certain paradigms, concepts and kinds of data. This research is further complicated by sensitivities around by the very vocabulary often involved, including public, civil society, and civic engagement itself. In the search for digital China, contributors consider how to think about China and how to locate a digital China. In exploring digital production and performance of and in China, we include analyses of fandom, idols, and the curation of collective pandemic memories. Together, this collection provides a rich set of deeply researched cases and imaginative new strategies to understand how the contradictions of digital China – between connectivity and control – are playing out, with important implications for the changing nature of public life. The emergence of digital communication technologies (DCTs) has greatly changed the way of information transmission, reduced the cost of communication and expanded the space of information spread. A largely growing literature shows that the communication technologies development lead to 'the death of distance'. To verify this assertion, this paper empirically test the effect of DCTs on agglomeration premium measured by the innovation performance advantage. By using a large number of firm-level patent data from China, we find that the spread of DCTs does not reduce the innovation premium of agglomeration. Conversely, innovative enterprises agglomerated benefit from the utilization of DCTs. This article highlights the importance of agglomeration for innovation activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study builds on the emergence of new gifting practices using e-hongbaos which are monetary gifts transferred between individuals made possible by digital communication platforms. This is an exploratory study on the impact of these innovations on intra-organizational relationships. Three types of intra-organizational relationships are considered: the employee's relationship with the organization, with the team, and with the manager. The findings of the study indicate positive impacts of e-hongbao at all organizational levels. The authors also identify the varying effects of e-hongbao on intra-organizational relationship outcomes depending on the occasion of gifting, as well as the mode, direction, and measure. Specifically, 'group' e-hongbao, a gamified group-gift enabled by the digitalization of gifting, has the strongest influence on intra-organizational relationships. The authors discuss the implications of these findings for theory and practice in the workplace and also offer future research directions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Against the background of global climate change and the rapid rise of the digital economy, the digital transformation of agriculture is profoundly changing the agricultural production and operation mode with the help of digital technology, becoming a new driving force for low-carbon and sustainable development of agriculture. However, previous studies rarely examined the impact of agricultural digital transformation on agricultural low-carbon transformation from the perspective of carbon productivity. To fill this gap, this study attempts to build a theoretical analysis framework for the impact of agricultural digital transformation on agricultural carbon productivity (ACP). By using a set of panel data from 30 provinces (cities) in China from 2011 to 2019, this study explores the impact of agricultural digital transformation on ACP, as well as its conduction mechanism and the non-linear mechanism. Empirical results show that the transformation of agricultural digitalization is conducive to the promotion of ACP. A series of robustness analyses support this conclusion. The main transmission mechanisms for digital transformation to affect ACP include agricultural industrial structure upgrading, and the agricultural scale operation. In addition, with the improvement of urbanization level and rural human capital, the impact of agricultural digital transformation on ACP presents a "U" type non-linear feature of inhibition first and promotion later. Furtherly, heterogeneity analysis shows that the impact of digital transformation on ACP will vary greatly depending on the levels of ACP, the geographical location of the studied area and whether it is a main grain-producing area. This study provides a theoretical and empirical basis for the improvement of China's agricultural carbon productivity from the perspective of the digital economy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Land transfer is an essential prerequisite for moderate-scale operation. Using the internet realizes the rational allocation of resources and promotes the development of agriculture and rural areas. Based on the data of 8198 farmers surveyed in the 2016 China Labor Dynamics Survey, the conditional mixed estimation method (CMP) was used to analyze how the internet use of rural households affects their land transfer-in. The results showed that: (1) There was a significant negative correlation between internet use and land transfer-in, and the marginal effect was 0.206. (2) Internet use can affect land transfer-in through social networks and the stability of off-farm employment. Among them, social networks have a positive mediating effect, which is 0.026%. The non-agricultural employment stability of the labor force has a negative mediating effect, which is 0.51%. (3) Internet use has no significant heterogeneity in land management scale, income, or suburb status, but there is heterogeneity in the way of surfing the internet. This research can deepen our understanding of the relationship between internet use and land transfer-in, and provide a reference for rural digital construction and land transfer-related policy formulation. With the continuous progress of China's social economy and the subsequent improvement of science and technology, intelligent architectural design has been gradually developed. At the present stage, the design of intelligent system in architecture has become a systematic design project, which is widely used in the field of architecture. The rapid development of artificial intelligence has not only brought new opportunities but also new challenges to the field of architectural design. On the one hand, digital architecture can share some of the functions of traditional architecture in its advantageous application areas, but inevitably new building function requirements and building design types will be formed. On the other hand, the depiction of building plans, elevations, and renderings, daylight adjustment, and volume calculation, as well as the transfer of text and graphic files via the Internet, are all closely related to digital architecture, regardless of which application software is used. In the current digital era, where real and virtual environments will coexist, digital transformation also has a lasting impact on intelligent building design, drawing out a new development model. As an important part of a country's diplomatic strategy, international cultural communication is increasingly valued by countries. But the traditional way of communication has been unable to keep up with the pace of the times. Digital twin technology can realize virtual reality, which can be applied to the design and dissemination of opera cultural platforms. The influence of a country's culture not only depends on whether its content has unique charm but also depends on whether it has advanced means of communication and strong communication ability. The purpose of this paper is to study how to design an opera cultural platform based on digital twins. This paper proposes a three-dimensional transformation algorithm based on digital twin, which can play a good role in the design of the opera culture platform. The experimental results in this paper are shown in Table 1. In 2016, the economic benefits brought by international cultural communication to China were 35.889 billion yuan. It increased by 3.735 billion yuan year-on-year, with a growth rate of 10.4%. By 2019, the economic benefits brought by international cultural communication to China were 50.730 billion yuan, with an increase of 49.66% over the previous year and a growth rate of 9.7%. It can be seen that, through continuous external communication, this aspect shows the cultural strength of the country and obtains an excellent international reputation and social benefits. On the other hand, it reaped considerable economic benefits. Therefore, it is very necessary to study the strategies of international cultural communication. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of the social public resource digital sharing system (SPRDSS) has been accelerated with the evolution of digital information and communication technologies (ICTs). This paper analyzes the dissipative structure features and formation process of SPRDSS in China. Combined with the Brusselator model and its transformation, this paper empirically analyzes the dissipative structure of SPRDSS using panel data collected from 30 Chinese provinces (excluding Tibet, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan) from 2015 to 2019. The results show that the SPRDSS in China has pre-conditions to form a dissipative structure. At present, the SPRDSSs in most Chinese provinces have not yet formed the dissipative structure, but they are gradually evolving into it. The global orderliness of the sharing system is greater in eastern China than in central China and greater in central China than in western China. The potential for improving global orderliness is greater in western China than in central China and is greater in central China than in eastern China. Therefore, proper policies and measures should be adopted to accelerate the construction of SPRDSS based on the evolution of dissipative structure and to promote the sustainable development of the digital sharing economy. In today's society, the rapid development of information technology has had a profound impact on human work and life as well as on education. In recent years, the rapid development of the Internet and information technology has laid a solid foundation for the digital transmission of information, which has changed the mode of information transmission and improved the efficiency of information dissemination. As an important part of network information dissemination, blended teaching is rapidly developing from an on-demand learning platform to an interactive learning platform and has now become a blended teaching platform in China. The main problem of the current blended teaching model is that the effect of improving performance is not good. In order to solve this problem, this paper introduces automation technology, which can significantly improve the extraction accuracy of information extraction methods in specific fields by using rich domain knowledge and features and complete the extraction tasks at multiple levels. The automation method based on automation technology has great advantages in this regard and effectively improves the English performance. Two groups of voluntary college students were randomly selected to conduct a one-semester blended teaching model designed in this paper to investigate the 'students' English scores. The average grades of students were 95.2, 96.7, 96.8, and 97.2, respectively, which is a big improvement over the existing system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TikTok, as an emerging digital geography, has transformed remote communication to a live, instant, and uncannily realistic interaction. To explore the implications of TikTok on older adults, this paper examines the accounts of older Chinese TikTok celebrities – their participation in TikTok as well as the major discourses of ageing mediated by TikTok. An empirical study was conducted by quantitatively analysing web‐scraped comments on older TikTok celebrities and by interpreting the themes present in these popular TikTok accounts. The empirical results unveil that TikTok facilitates the social interactions of older digital celebrities by creating a caring environment. However, the healthy ageing paradigm promoted by the Chinese government is also promoted by TikTok's recommendation algorithm and platform capitalism. The healthy ageing paradigm prioritises older adults who are healthy and independent, and as a result marginalises those who have a disease or disability or are dependent on others in some way. As a result, the healthy ageing paradigm promoted by TikTok constitutes another form of ageism. Responding to the call to go beyond "the digital", our research contributes to digital geography by examining the geographies of ageing mediated by TikTok. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Digital platforms have grown to exert substantial influence on the society, with increasing attention from scholars across a variety of disciplines. Compared with "platform urbanism" or the "platformization" of cities, how digital platforms entangle rural local society has received less scrutiny. In this article, we focus on "platform ruralism" and place the unfolding of digital platforms in rural areas in the neoliberal globalization process. Building on a series of field studies on rural e-commerce since 2016, we analyze how digital platforms sprawl into the rural local as the "techno-spatial" fix, which involves the construction of local "techno-spatial infrastructures." Techno-spatial infrastructures revolve around local platform complementors who assemble local networks based on social and economic relations, partly driven by the use of social networking sites and mobile phones. In the meanwhile, local platform complementors also complement conventionally algorithm-based platform mechanisms. We also examine the structural implications of the techno-spatial fix of digital platforms. We contend that it results in the techno-spatial reification of digital platform in the local space. With techno-spatial infrastructures, digital platforms secure new markets by userifying local rural residents into platform users and reorganizing local networks. The local areas witness the centralization of local social and economic networks. The formation of these networks is driven by digital platforms, and these centralized networks are affiliated with digital platforms. This article places digital platforms and communication practices at the center of interrogation in rural China studies. It provides a range of cases to reflect on digital platforms and platform capitalism from the intersection of technology and spatiality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The dynamic design of graphic language can be seen everywhere in life as the digital media era progresses. Graphic designs, such as product packaging, poster design, book binding design, and logo design, are examples of traditional visual design. The print media is the most important factor. Graphic design that is aided by digital media technology is not limited to print but also includes network media. The teaching research of China's visual design specialty is still in its early stages, the relevant teaching system reform of various colleges and universities is still being explored, and there is no unified standard in the digital information age. As a result, it is critical to conduct in-depth research using scientific and systematic methods in order to pave the way for the development of a domestic visual design specialty in the information age. Simultaneously, the popularization and development of new media have had a significant impact on traditional printing media, breaking the monotony of traditional visual communication and making modern visual design more vivid and intuitive. Visual perception in psychology is introduced into design thinking in this paper. Apart from its expression in art culture, the concept of space also encompasses the physics concepts of time and space, as well as the scientific research theory of visual perception in psychology, which transcends the perceptual cognition level of space in art design. Nowhere is the effort to control the flow of digital information more extensive and sustained than it is in China. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) uses a wide range of tools and strategies to achieve two related, but distinct, goals of digital information control: to shape public knowledge and to "guide" the public in the aftermath of sudden, unexpected events. Controlling social media is especially relevant to the second goal, and the CCP uses strategies of content removal (censorship) and content generation (propaganda) to pursue this aim. Recent studies of the Chinese internet and social media show that the CCP has adapted quickly to new digital communication technologies, though it is in sometimes unexpected ways, and CCP control of Chinese social media is integral to its efforts to shape public beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. The evaluation of clustering algorithms is intrinsically difficult because of the lack of objective measures. On the basis of the DIFI and China's Provincial Panel data, this study aims to test the poverty reduction effect of digital inclusive finance in three dimensions of income, education, and healthcare and further look at the transmission mechanism of digital inclusive finance in poverty alleviation. The results indicated that digital inclusive finance exerts a poverty reduction effect in three dimensions—medical poverty, income poverty, and education poverty. Of these, the coverage breadth significantly affects the alleviation of medical poverty, the use depth significantly affects the alleviation of income poverty and education poverty, and the digitization level affects the alleviation of poverty in three dimensions. The level of regional economic development plays an intermediary role in the poverty alleviation effect of digital inclusive finance. Compared with the western region, which is relatively backward in development, the poverty reduction effect of digital inclusive finance in the eastern region is more significant. Since 2014, "plot twist news" as a controversial news phenomenon has appeared extensively in Chinese digital communication. In the context of journalism, this refers to news facts provided in follow-up reporting that contradict the facts provided in the initial reporting. Based on interviews with 25 journalists who specialize in in-depth reporting in Beijing in 2017, this study suggests that the phenomenon of plot twist news in the Chinese context urges us to think about how "truth" is being interpreted by different social actors and how the different versions of narrated truth drive journalistic investigation. Built upon field theory, this article argues that the doxa and habitus of the journalism field are challenged by the audience in such a way that journalists try to respond to audience demands through reporting the truth. Through the smartphone, the production and circulation of digital visual media have become as costless and accessible as audio and text-based communication. It would be challenging to be a contemporary ethnographer without engaging with digital practices which in Japan and China at least, tend towards being highly visual. Digital visual communication is recognised in literature as an effective and accessible form of communication, with an increasing number of studies in the field of digital anthropology, media studies and Internet studies exploring the consequences of digital images on social media. There is a pressing need to understand local forms of visual communication in the digital age, where the visual has become an essential part of daily communication. This article deals particularly with the rise of visual digital communication among older adults in China and Japan. Drawing on 16-month ethnographies conducted simultaneously between 2018 and 2019 in China and Japan, this article contributes to the discussion of visual communication in light of this semiotic shift happening online, which is then contextualised within people's offline lives. The ethnographies in both China and Japan find that, first of all, visual communication via digital media enables more effective and efficient phatic communication and emotion work. In addition, the ethnographies point to a question about 'authenticity' in interpersonal communication. The ethnographies show that in some cases, the deployment of visual communication via the smartphone is not so much about being able to express 'authentic' personal feelings but rather, in being able to effectively establish a digital public façade according to social norms. This study reports on the development of the interpersonal discourse semantic system of involvement based on the analysis of evaluative meanings in 3 different data sets of Chinese digitally mediated communication. It builds on prior work developed within tenor and interpersonal meanings. Within the proposed system, 3 kinds of interpersonal meaning dimensions are posited. The first relates to the relative status between interlocutors and participants within a social hierarchy and is, thus, named social hierarchy. The second relates to the positioning of the person posting and others in relation to how close their relationship is and is, thus, named social distance. The third relates to who is being positioned within the other 2 dimensions and is called involvement type. Within the 3 data sets of digitally mediated Chinese communication (i.e., forum posts, SMS, and chat room messages), we found that the Chinese interlocutors frequently positioned themselves and others in relationships both within a social hierarchy as well as in relationships concerning their relative social distance. Results show there are a number of linguistic realisations of these 3 involvement systems which Chinese interlocutors use to negotiate their relative social positions in digitally mediated communication. The heightened securitisation of Islamic terrorism has received significant attention in Western countries, but little is known about the extent to which netizens in centralised political systems such as China have responded to this threat. This article seeks to address this gap by examining the localisation of the globalised fear of terrorism in China. It analyses online posts about international terrorism that appeared on Sina Weibo in China between 2011 and 2016, and shows how the opinions about terrorism expressed in the Chinese digital media sphere are strongly polarised. We argue that in China's online sphere the localisation of the "war on terror" frame generates two key polarised public responses – "negotiated acceptance" and "negative re-utilisation" – and that this polarisation of opinions about terrorism stems, in part, from China's stability-oriented approach to managing terrorism. These findings point to both an acceptance of and a resistance to the securitisation of terrorism and the globalised fear that it (re)produces. Moreover, the findings offer insights into the extent to which local security concerns and beliefs in the Chinese political system can create a divergence between the local perspectives on terrorism and the Western experiences and practices of security labelling. Purpose: The primary objectives of the article are to systematically investigate the effects of differentiated functions of WeChat use (social use and recreational use) on university students' online self-presentation, social support and sense of belonging. Design/methodology/approach: The data were collected from a web-based survey on a sample of 485 university students in mainland China. Correlation analyses and structural equation modeling (SEM) were implemented to address the corresponding hypotheses. Findings: The results demonstrate that the social use of WeChat is positively related to online self-presentation, whereas recreational use is unrelated to such behavior. Additionally, the findings verify that online self-presentation is a significant predictor of both social support and sense of belonging. Furthermore, online self-presentation could mediate the influence of social use of WeChat on social support and sense of belonging. Research limitations/implications: Theoretically, the study represents an initial effort to elucidate the joint impact of differentiated functions of WeChat use and online self-presentation on social support and sense of belonging. Practically, these findings identify the crucial mediation role of online self-presentation in assisting individuals to acquire social support and promote sense of belonging. Originality/value: Although mobile social media has brought dramatic revolutions in interaction and interpersonal behaviors, the empirically studies regarding the potential influences of its utilization are equivocal. These outcomes may shed meaningful light on the comprehending of unique characteristics of WeChat communication and how it could impact people's psychosocial development in the digital era. Atlases contain a large number of maps, and their design requires unity and coordination. When designing map symbol sizes, we must consider not only the requirements of single maps, but also the coordination of the whole atlas. Changing the map scales and statistical unit resolution alters the visual perception of maps, even if the symbols are unchanged. Therefore, appropriate and coordinated atlas symbols are required. This paper analyzes the main factors influencing the symbol design of the National Economic Atlas of China, establishes a visual-variable system of atlas symbols, and models the variable combinations and sizes of experimental symbols. It also analyzes 592 experimental maps and constructs an adaptability evaluation model of map symbol sizes under multivariate conditions. By relating the appropriate symbol sizes to the thematic data, we formulate the symbol size under multivariate conditions, thereby improving the standardization of symbol design in the National Economic Atlas of China. This study presents the design and construction of the Phoenix Centre in Beijing, China. The project has two main reinforced concrete buildings: office building and broadcasting buildings. These buildings are connected by a spatial steel shell with a complex curved surface. The project is composed of six structural parts that are not structurally independent and form a complicated system. A three-dimensional (3D) modelling software is used to build precise 3D geometric and computation models. The best architectural effects are fulfilled by designing the curved surface with the members under spatial bending–torsional conditions. A series of measurements are implemented to assure certain computation accuracy, design efficiency and construction feasibility. A smooth takeover from the complex steel design to fabrication and construction is accomplished through the information transmission technology with the Digital Project software developed based on the 3D modelling software CATIA, Rhino and Auto CAD. This article examines how the interplay between political, economic and technological factors in China has resulted in the taming of critical journalism since the rule of Xi Jinping in 2012. While trying to reduce ideological ambiguity and revive Maoist ideology, the authorities operate overt and covert mechanisms of media control that dramatically limit reporting space. Market and digital communication technologies are currently contributing to tightening media control by worsening the context for critical journalism. The threat of the market to critical journalism that began in the early twenty-first century has deepened. The capitalisation of digital platforms, outperforming the empowering potential of digital communication technologies, has led to the pursuit of entertainment and capital in the media environment where critical journalism is practised. A hostile political climate and the pursuit of profit have radically diminished the necessary conditions for sustaining critical journalism. With this institutional crisis, critical journalism has little capacity and foundation to struggle with the party-state over reporting space. In this case, therefore, with neither the market nor digital media technologies being a liberalising force, they have helped the state to wield political power and to consolidate media control. Researchers at Yancheng Teachers University in China have developed a new color image-encryption algorithm to enhance the security of digital images. The algorithm utilizes extended DNA coding, Zig-Zag transform, and a fractional-order laser system to encrypt the images. The researchers analyzed the chaotic sequences generated by the laser system and used them to design the encryption algorithm. The algorithm was found to have strong encryption capabilities and can withstand multiple decryption methods. This research contributes to the field of information and data encoding and encryption, ensuring the integrity and secure communication of digital images. [Extracted from the article]
