The current ecological study aims to explore the association between dietary factors and hydatidiform mole (HM) incidence in Japan and China. HM incidence in Japan gradually declined from 1970s to 1990s, while the dietary structure also changed during the same period, mainly characterized by a decrease in the consumption of cereals and an increase in the consumption of meat, eggs, and dairy products. In China, HM incidence varied by regions, and it positively correlated with the per capita intake of rice, fish and shrimp, and animal fat, as well as the proportion of GDP of primary industry; and negatively correlated with the per capita intake of wheat flour, starch and sugar, protein, and iron, and the proportion of protein in the caloric nutrients and the proportion of nonagricultural population. In partial analysis, the correlations of HM incidence with rice, fish and shrimp, iron, and the proportion of protein in caloric nutrients remained significant. Meanwhile, alcoholic beverage consumption and the proportion of empty calories in caloric food were also found to be positively correlated with HM incidence, while phosphorus consumption was negatively correlated. Background and purpose: Social engagement is an important active aging strategy to promote older adults' mental health. The purposes of this study were to compare social engagement in older populations around the world and explore associations with mental health outcomes. Materials and methods: An international cross‐sectional survey was conducted from 2017 to 2019. Data were retrieved from The International Social Survey Programme for a secondary data analysis across 30 countries. This study applied the Taxonomy of Social Activities and its six levels as operational definitions for a consistent concept of social engagement for international comparisons. Results: In total, 9403 older adults with a mean age of 72.85 ± 6.40 years responded. The highest levels of older adults' social engagement were found in Switzerland, Thailand, and New Zealand. Older adults of a higher age, with a lower educational level, who were permanently sick or disabled, who had no partner, who were widowed or whose civil partner had died, who lived alone, and who had lower self‐placement in society had significantly lower social engagement than did their counterparts. In the regression model, older adults' social engagement positively predicted general health, self‐accomplishment, and life satisfaction, but negatively predicted loneliness and depression. Conclusions: In aging societies worldwide, encouraging older adults' social engagement would be beneficial to promote mental health. Implications for nursing practice and health policies: Community professional nurses can develop strategies of social engagement based on the needs and sociodemographic factors of older adults to improve their mental health. The elderly patients admitted to cardiac intensive care unit (CICU) are at relatively high risk for developing delirium. A simple and reliable predictive model can benefit them from early recognition of delirium followed by timely and appropriate preventive strategies. To explore the role of frailty in delirium prediction and develop and validate a delirium predictive model including frailty for elderly patients in CICU. A prospective, observational cohort study. CICU at China–Japan Friendship Hospital from March 1, 2022 to August 25, 2022 (derivation cohort); CICU at Beijing Anzhen Hospital affiliated to Capital Medical University from March 14, 2023 to May 8, 2023 (external validation cohort). A total of 236 and 90 participants were enrolled in the derivation and external validation cohorts, respectively. Participants in the derivation cohort were assigned into either the delirium (n = 70) or non-delirium group (n = 166) based on the occurrence of delirium. The simplified Chinese version of the Confusion Assessment Method for the Diagnosis of Delirium in the Intensive Care Unit was used to assess delirium twice a day at 8:00–10:00 and 18:00–20:00 until the onset of delirium or discharge from the CICU. Frailty was assessed using the FRAIL scale during the first 24 h in the CICU. Other possible risk factors were collected prospectively through patient interviews and medical records review. After processing missing data via multiple imputations, univariate analysis and bootstrapped forward stepwise logistic regression were performed to select optimal predictors and develop the models. The models were internally validated using bootstrapping and evaluated comprehensively via discrimination, calibration, and clinical utility in both the derivation and external validation cohorts. The study developed D-FRAIL predictive model using FRAIL score, hearing impairment, Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation-II score, and fibrinogen. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was 0.937 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.907–0.967) and 0.889 (95%CI: 0.840–0.938) even after bootstrapping in the derivation cohort. Inclusion of frailty was demonstrated to improve the model performance greatly with the AUC increased from 0.851 to 0.937 (p < 0.001). In the external validation cohort, the AUC of D-FRAIL model was 0.866 (95%CI: 0.782–0.907). Calibration plots and decision curve analysis suggested good calibration and clinical utility of the D-FRAIL model in both the derivation and external validation cohorts. For elderly patients in the CICU, FRAIL score is an independent delirium predictor and the D-FRAIL model demonstrates superior performance in predicting delirium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research collaboration is promoted by governments and research funders, but if the relative prevalence and merits of collaboration vary internationally then different national and disciplinary strategies may be needed to promote it. This study compares the team size and field normalized citation impact of research across all 27 Scopus broad fields in the 10 countries with the most journal articles indexed in Scopus 2008–2012. The results show that team size varies substantially by discipline and country, with Japan (4.2) having two‐thirds more authors per article than the United Kingdom (2.5). Solo authorship is rare in China (4%) but common in the United Kingdom (27%). While increasing team size associates with higher citation impact in almost all countries and fields, this association is much weaker in China than elsewhere. There are also field differences in the association between citation impact and collaboration. For example, larger team sizes in the Business, Management & Accounting category do not seem to associate with greater research impact, and for China and India, solo authorship associates with higher citation impact in this field. Overall, there are substantial international and field differences in the extent to which researchers collaborate and the extent to which collaboration associates with higher citation impact. Research identifies unique challenges for younger women diagnosed with breast cancer at or before 45 years of age. This paper explores the experiences of younger women from diverse cultural backgrounds with breast cancer to see if there are differing healthcare provision needs across cultures. Sandelowski and Barroso's framework for undertaking a meta-synthesis is used in this paper. Initial searches in academic databases returned 42 papers of interest. Re-reading the papers in the context of the research question identified 12 studies which met the inclusion criteria. Five key themes were identified in these 12 studies. The overarching finding is that, irrespective of cultural background, the confrontation with breast cancer transforms the younger woman's life. It seems that healthcare provision needs do not differ substantially across cultures. Health professionals should address the unique psychosocial effects of cancer in the context of the lifestage of the woman. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Knowledge about aging and the attitudes toward older people were surveyed in undergraduate students (total number of subjects sampled is 1402) in four countries (Japan, China, Taiwan, and Vietnam) in eastern cultures and in two countries (United States and United Kingdom) in western cultures. All participants completed two questionnaires, FAQ1 (for knowledge) and ASD (for attitudes) in their own languages. It was found that within the undergraduate students sampled: (a) the level of knowledge about aging in the western countries is significantly higher than that in the eastern countries, and (b) attitudes toward aging are more positive in the western countries compared to the eastern countries. The data suggest that, within the limits of the sampling: (a) the tradition of respecting older adults in eastern cultures may have weakened gradually, and (b) the modernization theory that assumes industrialization devalues aging populations appears to be supported in eastern countries but not in western countries. An alternative non-linear theory is discussed for the relationship between modernization and the societal views on aging. This study examined (1) the relative prevalence of childhood abuse and other pathological childhood experiences in China reported by outpatients with borderline personality disorder (BPD), with other personality disorders, and without personality disorders; and, (2) whether the primary predictors of BPD in North America are associated with the development of BPD in China. The childhood experiences of 203 outpatients with BPD, 109 outpatients with other personality disorders, and 70 outpatients without Axis II diagnoses were assessed with the Chinese version of the Childhood Experience of Care and Abuse Questionnaire (CECA.Q). Patients with BPD reported significantly more physical, emotional, and sexual abuse than either comparison group. Four types of childhood experiences were significant predictors of BPD: maternal neglect, paternal antipathy, sexual abuse, and maternal physical abuse. The findings suggest that maternal physical abuse is as strong a predictor of BPD in China as sexual abuse, a finding not replicated in North America. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In midsummer (July-August) of 2017, the high temperature (HT) frequency in China breaks the record since 1951. For each HT threshold from 35 °C to 40 °C, the frequency is beyond the normal by 2.58–3.46 standard deviations. Specifically, the HT events in southern China make major contributions to the new record, and they demonstrate obvious temporal variations. The strongest episode in southern China appears in mid-to-late July and lasts for nearly 20 days. The westward extension and intensification of the western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) is usually considered as the leading factor of the HT in southern China. However, the diagnostic analysis in this paper shows that the 2017 HT event does not correspond to the intensification of the whole WPSH but to its western part, and there is a cyclonic circulation anomaly over the western Pacific warm pool, which is closely related to the southward extension of the middle-latitude trough over the east side of Japan. This circulation pattern is favorable for the southward retreat of the WPSH northern boundary over the warm pool, which results in the shape change and even the split of the high. Then the west part of the high is incapable of withdrawing eastward, and it dominates over the southern China steadily, leading to the persistent HT events. This conclusion is further confirmed by the statistical analysis both of the multi-year circulations and the typical HT extreme case in 2013, which could provide reference for the sub-seasonal prediction of HT in southern China. • China suffered the record-breaking extreme high temperature event in July-August 2017 since 1951. • Middle-latitude trough over the East of Japan was first found in causing a constant westward WPSH. • The leading influence of the trough could be considered in the forecast of HT event in southern China.
