Emission controls have substantially brought down aerosol pollution in China; however, aerosol mass reductions have slowed down in recent years in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region, where secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation poses a major challenge for air quality improvement. In this study, we characterized the roles of SOA in haze formation in urban Guangzhou in the PRD using year-long aerosol mass spectrometer measurements for the first time and discussed possible pathways of SOA formations. On average, organic aerosols (OA) contribute dominantly (50 %) to nonrefractory submicron aerosol mass (NR-PM 1). The average mass concentration of SOA (including by less- and more-oxidized OA, LOOA and MOOA) contributed most to NR-PM 1 , reaching about 1.7 times that of primary organic aerosols (POA, including hydrocarbon-like and cooking-related OA) and accounting for 32 % of NR-PM 1 , even more than sulfate (22 %) and nitrate (16 %). Seasonal variations of NR-PM 1 revealed that haze-formation mechanisms differed much among distinct seasons. Sulfate mattered more than nitrate in fall, while nitrate was more important than sulfate in spring and winter, with SOA contributing significantly to haze formations in all the seasons. Daytime SOA formation was weak in winter under low oxidant levels and air relative humidity, whereas prominent daytime SOA formation was observed in fall, spring and summer almost on a daily basis, suggesting important roles of photochemistry in SOA formations. Further analysis showed that the coordination of gas-phase photochemistry and subsequent aqueous-phase reactions likely played significant roles in quick daytime SOA formations. Obvious nighttime SOA formations were also frequently observed in spring, fall and winter, and it was found that daytime and nighttime SOA formations together had resulted in the highest SOA concentrations in these seasons and contributed substantially to severe haze formations. Simultaneous increases in nitrate with SOA after sunset suggested the important roles of NO 3 radical chemistry in nighttime SOA formations, and this was further confirmed by a continuous increase in the NO + / NO 2+ fragment ratio that related to measured particulate nitrate after sunset. The findings of this study have promoted our understanding of haze pollution characteristics of the PRD and laid down future directions for investigations of SOA-formation mechanisms in urban areas of southern China that share similar emission sources and meteorological conditions. Brown carbon (BrC) is a special type of organic aerosol (OA), capable of absorbing solar radiation from near-ultraviolet (UV) to visible wavelengths, which may lead to an increased aerosol radiative effect in the atmosphere. While high concentrations of OAs have been observed in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region of China, the optical properties and corresponding radiative forcing of BrC in the PRD are still not well understood. In this work, we conducted a set of comprehensive measurements of atmospheric particulate matter from 29 November 2014 to 2 January 2015 to investigate aerosol compositions, optical properties, source origins, and radiative forcing effects at a suburban station in Guangzhou. The particle absorption Ångström exponent (AAE) was deduced and utilized to distinguish light absorption by BrC from that by black carbon (BC). The results showed that the average absorption contributions of BrC were 34.1±8.0 % at 370 nm, 23.7±7.3 % at 470 nm, 16.0±6.7 % at 520 nm, 13.0±5.4 % at 590 nm, and 8.7±4.3 % at 660 nm. A sensitivity analysis of the evaluation of the absorption Ångström exponent of BC (AAE BC) was conducted based on the Mie theory calculation assuming that the BC-containing aerosol was mixed with the core–shell and external configurations. The corresponding uncertainty in AAE BC was acquired. We found that variations in the imaginary refractive index (RI) of the BC core can significantly affect the estimation of AAE BC. However, AAE BC was relatively less sensitive to the real part of the RI of the BC core and was least sensitive to the real part of the RI of the non-light-absorbing shell. BrC absorption was closely related to aerosol potassium cation content (K+), a common tracer of biomass burning emissions, which was most likely associated with straw burning in the rural area of the western PRD. Diurnal variation in BrC absorption revealed that primary organic aerosols had a larger BrC absorption capacity than secondary organic aerosols (SOAs). Radiative transfer simulations showed that BrC absorption may cause 2.3±1.8 W m -2 radiative forcing at the top of the atmosphere (TOA) and contribute to 15.8±4.4 % of the aerosol warming effect. A chart was constructed to conveniently assess the BrC radiative forcing efficiency in the studied area with reference to certain aerosol single-scattering albedo (SSA) and BrC absorption contributions at various wavelengths. The UV attenuation due to atmospheric aerosols in Guangzhou was quantitatively assessed using surface ultraviolet radiation (UV, 295-385 nm) observation, sun photometer and radiation models. Observations showed that the annual average value of aerosol optical depth (AOD) was 1.19 in UV spectral region of 340 nm, the annual average occurrence frequency of aerosol optical depth AOD>1.0 was 55%, and the annual average attenuation rate of surface UV direct radiation of 340 nm was 68%. It was proven in the observation of surface UV radiation and model evaluation that annual average attenuation of UV due to atmosphere was 75%, and that reached 72% in the dry season (October, November, December and January); while average attenuation of UV due to atmospheric aerosols reached 62% in the dry season. It was indicated that very significant UV attenuations due to atmospheric aerosols existed in Guangzhou urban agglomeration, and at least half of UV radiation was attenuated due to atmospheric aerosols. Such large-amplitude attenuation will have a significant impact on urban ecosystem and species chemical cycles, especially photochemical reaction processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Isoprene has a potentially large effect on ozone (O3) formation in the subtropical, highly polluted city of Guangzhou. Online measurements of isoprene in Guangzhou city are scarce; thus, isoprene levels were monitored for one year at the Guangzhou Panyu Atmospheric Composition Station (GPACS), a suburban site in Guangzhou, using an online gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC–FID) system to investigate the characterization and reactivity of isoprene and its effect on the O3 peak profile in different seasons. The results showed that the daily average mixing ratios of isoprene at GPACS were 0.40, 2.20, 1.40, and 0.13 mixing ratio by volume (ppbv) in spring, summer, autumn, and winter, respectively. These values were considerably higher than the mixing ratios of isoprene in the numerous other subtropical and temperate cities around the world. Furthermore, isoprene ranked first with regard to O3 formation potential (OFP) and propylene-equivalent mixing ratio among 56 measured non–methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs). The ratios of isoprene to cis-2-butene, an exhaust tracer, were determined to estimate the fractions of biogenic and anthropogenic emissions. The results revealed a much greater contribution from biogenic than anthropogenic factors during the daytime in all four seasons. In addition, night-time isoprene emissions were mostly associated with vehicles in winter, and the residual isoprene that remained after photochemical loss during the daytime also persisted into the night. The high levels of isoprene in summer and autumn may cause the strong and broad peaks of the O3 profile because of its association with the most favorable meteorological conditions (e.g., high temperature and intense solar radiation) and the highest OH mixing ratio, which could affect human health by exposing people to a high O3 mixing ratio for prolonged periods. The lower mixing ratios of isoprene resulted in a weak and sharp peak in the O3 profile in both spring and winter. The high level of isoprene in the subtropical zone could accentuate its large impact on atmospheric oxidant capacity and air quality in Guangzhou city. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent studies show that the rapid increases in urbanization and human activities in the PRD region have important impacts on regional air quality. In addition to local anthropogenic emissions which are major driving forces for poor air quality in this region, biomass burning in Southeast Asia has also important contribution on aerosol and ozone concentrations in the PRD region. In this paper, this effect is analyzed by using satellite data, ground measurements and models. MODIS aerosol optical depth (AOD) distribution in March 2006 shows a clear enhancement in AOD between Southeast Asia and the PRD region. With detail wind analysis, two distinguished conditions are classified, i.e., Condition-1 (PRD is under influence of the biomass burning from Southeast Asia) and Condition-2 (PRD is not under influence of the biomass burning from Southeast Asia). The characterizations of aerosol, UV, and ozone in Guangzhou city (located in the PRD region) under these two conditions are analyzed. The analyses suggest that aerosols and CO concentrations are higher in Condition-1 than in Condition-2; while the UV intensity and O3 concentrations are lower in Condition-1 than in Condition-2. This result indicates that in Condition-1, the enhanced aerosol concentrations from the Southeast Asia biomass burning produce reduction of UV intensity, and thus decreases the formation of ozone in Guangzhou. This paper suggests that the rapid increase in urbanization and human activities has important impacts on visibility in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region. A long-term trend of visibility in Guangzhou (one of the largest cities in PRD) shows that between 1954 and 2006, there is a rapid change in visibility. Between 1954 and 1972, low visibility has the smallest occurrence (less than a few days per year). Between 1972 and 1980, the visibility condition is within a transition period, and the occurrence of low visibility increases rapidly. Between 1980 and 2006, the occurrence of low visibility remains very high (150daysyear−1), suggesting that the city of Guangzhou is often under low-visibility conditions since the 1980s. In order to understand the causes of the low visibility in Guangzhou, we analyze physical and chemical characterizations of a low-visibility event occurring between 15 and 29 November 2005. The analysis suggests that high concentration of aerosol particles is a major cause for the low visibility. The threshold aerosol concentration that is corresponding to the low visibility (<10km) is about 120μgm−3. Further analysis indicates that the relationship between aerosol concentrations and visibility appears in a non-linearity correlation. When aerosol concentrations are very high (above 120μgm−3), the change in visibility is not sensitive to aerosol concentration. By contrast, when aerosol concentrations are <120μgm−3, the change in visibility is very sensitive to aerosol concentrations. This study also shows that absorbing aerosol particles (such as element carbon (EC)) play important roles in the reduction of visibility. In most cases, the extremely low visibility (<2km) is often resulted from high EC concentrations (above 15μgm−3). In averaged condition, small scattering aerosol particles (<1μm in radius) have the largest contribution to the reduction of visibility (about 70%). By contrast, large scattering particles have the smallest contribution to the reduction of visibility. This analysis implies that the persistent low visibility is mainly resulted from small aerosol particles, including both scattering and absorbing particles. In order to improve the visibility in the Guangzhou region, the reduction of small particle emissions is urgently needed. This study suggests that there are two important steps to improve the visibility in Guangzhou. First, the aerosol concentration should be reduced to less than the threshold value (120μgm−3). Second, a further decrease in aerosols from its threshold value will lead to a significant improvement in visibility due to the non-linearity relationship between aerosol and visibility.
