This paper is aimed to develop a hybrid model (PCA-ANN) to predict the extractive content in eucalyptus wood clones. The input variables to the virtual analyzer are planting parameters available from the forest inventory, therefore the prediction does not rely on laboratory analysis of the wood samples, affording a quick estimate of the extractive contents. This study further bridges the literature gap on the investigation of the cause of variability of extractive content in eucalyptus wood. The PCA-ANN was identified from experimental data to predict and monitor the extractive content, since laboratory measurements can take several days and become available only after wood processing. The experimental data contained information on ten species of eucalyptus clones from five regions in the extreme south of Bahia, Brazil. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) firstly assessed the impact of planting variables on the extractives content. The variability of the data was represented by eight principal components and the variables that mostly contribute to the extractive content are: potential acidity, iron, saturation of aluminum, magnesium, pH, base saturation, remaining phosphorus, zinc, manganese and copper. The artificial neural network (ANN) with the 8 principal components in the input layer showed that the PCA could effectively reduce the dimensionality of the data. For practical purposes, though, the ANN with 10 input variables and 16 neurons in the hidden layer, presenting an average relative deviation of 1.5%, is recommended. The impact of the broad disjunction between Amazonia and the Atlantic Forest on biodiversity has been the theme of several discussions in recent decades. Here, we evaluate the effects of dependence on humid environments and the role of historical factors on the level, distribution and structuring of genetic variation in widely distributed Neotropical insects. For such, we test whether climatically stable zones (i.e. refuges) in both Amazonia and the Atlantic Forest concentrate higher genetic diversity in the social paper wasps Angiopolybia pallens and Synoeca surinama. We found that historical events have avoided the interchange of A. pallens between both rainforests at least since the Early Pliocene and that ancient colonization in north-western Amazonia and the Bahia refuge significantly predicts genetic diversity in populations of this species. Conversely, the split between the Atlantic Forest and remaining western populations of S. surinama is more recent (Plio-Pleistocene); this species has considerably lower genetic diversity than A. pallens and such diversity is mostly concentrated in Amazonia and in the cerrado biome (savanna) than in the Atlantic Forest. Finally, we propose that the occurrence of species that exhibit such distribution patterns should be taken into consideration when establishing areas for conservation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The role of pre-service English Language Teacher Education is crucial to help the new generation of English teachers bridge the gap between theoretical discussions in the field of ELF and classroom practice. With this in mind, the aim of this paper is to present some findings from two ongoing PhD research studies on ELF awareness in teacher education. The investigations were carried out in two different public universities in the state of Bahia, Brazil. They both aim at identifying the way future English teachers perceive the teaching of English under an ELF perspective. The literature used to support and direct both studies is based on works of researchers affiliated with recent ELF studies, such as Sifakis et al. (2018); Bayyurt and Sifakis (2015, 2017), Gimenez et al. (2015a, 2015b, 2018), among others. One investigation is action research and the other one is an ethnographic study. Data came from both micro-teaching conducted by participants with their peers and presentation of teaching sequences in which they had the opportunity to integrate their evolving understanding of ELF and its implications into practical teaching activities. The way the student teachers translated ELF theories into teaching steps suggested signs of critical reorientation of their beliefs toward ELT and English use, demonstrating that they are open to integrate ELF into their future experiences both in the classroom and in real-life contexts. Landulfo Alves was an agronomist who was educated in the USA and became a politician, having served as federal intervener in Bahia from 1938 to 1942, in the context of the Estado Novo, and later as senator of the Republic from 1951 to 1954. His investments in agriculture and education left important legacies for scientific activities in Bahia. Despite these achievements, historians may not have fully grasped his importance in the development of Bahia, especially in science. Seeking to fill this void, this paper addresses questions which have received little exploration in historiography: how did his education motivate his initiation into the public sphere and influence his political choices? What were his investments in the state? Was he an isolated case, or was he in line with the development policies of his time? This paper theoretically models and empirically assesses the sociotechnical transition process experienced by a group of producers in southern Bahia State (Brazil). Driven by the search for economic sustainability in cocoa production, this group has achieved full sustainability through production chain upgrading, enabling the agroforestry system's (cabruca) continuity in their properties. In order to understand how and why this process happened, our conceptual model advances on the Multi-Level Perspective (MLP) framework, as it is an applied way of analyzing different niche transformations within the same regime, a typical situation in agrifood systems in emerging markets. Our analyses and empirical evidence suggest that interpersonal relationships play a crucial role in this process, particularly developing concepts and strategies, and in establishing operational structures. Rules and structure formalization may replace interpersonal relationships, as observed when the transition goes forward. Our findings evidence knowledge gathering, cooperation among actors, and information and support exchanging as critical factors to trigger the niche transition process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines how Chinese agribusiness firms are engaging with established systems of private governance in the Brazilian soybean sector and how that engagement is variously accommodated, contested, and configured by local realities that reflect the uneven history of transnational agribusiness development across the Brazilian agro‐export region. Using qualitative data collected at three research sites that represent different historical moments in the Brazilian agro‐export region (Mato Grosso, Goiás, and Bahia), the paper argues that the social structures underlying the particular agrarian histories of these three subregions create unique contexts Chinese firms must navigate, which in turn shapes their engagement with the private agribusiness regime across space. Although the private agribusiness regime is often portrayed as a top‐down system of governance that subjugates the polity to the demands of capital, this framing neglects to understand how that system of power is contested, negotiated, and reshaped on the ground. The Quaternary vertebrate paleontology of the Brazilian Intertropical Region is well-known, but there are only a few publications on bone ichnology. In this paper, we analyzed trace fossils in 23 bones of the Gruna das Três Cobras, Complexo Suíço, and F3 caves, which are located in Bahia and Rio Grande do Norte states, in the Brazilian Intertropical Region. We discovered gnaw marks assigned to Machichnus and bite marks attributed to Nihilichnus, as well as insect modifications referring to single (Cuniculichnus, Gunnellichnus, Karethraichnus, and Osteocallis) and multiple behaviors (Munitusichnus, and Taotieichnus). Additionally, we proposed the new ichnospecies Nihilichnus sulcatus n. isp. (bite mark) and Cuniculichnus cascudoi n. isp. (insect feeding mark). Regarding the predation/scavenger marks, Protocyon troglodytes was the probable primary modification agent, but some traces may also be attributed to Smilodon populator and Caiman latirostris. Cuniculichnus, Karethraichnus, Munitusichnus, and Osteocallis are attributed to dermestids, whereas termites probably produced Gunnelichnus and Taotieichnus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The idea of separation between person and nature, accentuated by current production and consumption models, has generated unthinkable impacts, causing an unprecedented loss and degradation of the global environment. Occupying 13% of the Brazilian territory, the Atlantic Forest is the secondlargest tropical rainforest on the American continent; however, it is one of the most threatened biomes in the world, with only 12% of the original cover. In this study, we consider that enabling young people to experience direct contact with nearby natural environments can positively influence their knowledge and feelings about the biodiversity that occurs there, contributing to its protection and conservation for current and future generations. In this study, we explore how teenagers (n = 17) aged between 13 and 17 years old describe and perceive the nearby natural environment before and after an interpretive trail in Una, Bahia, Brazil. Participants were asked to draw the Atlantic Forest with colored pencils on white paper and, based on the drawing, they answered the following questions: "What is in your drawing? and "What is happening in your drawing?," in addition to other information such as the title of the drawing, difficulty of the activity, and sociodemographic aspects. Content analysis was used to analyze the information collected. From the drawings and responses of the participants, categories related to knowledge, experiences, and types of relationships with the visited place emerged. We count the frequency of drawing elements before and after the visit, together with a qualitative analysis of the descriptions of their feelings and meanings attributed to the visit, highlighting the different elements and their relationships. The results showed that, after the trail, the participants manifested bonds of proximity with the visited environment and the organisms protected there, evidencing expressive changes in their perceptions of the person-nature interaction, in the specific knowledge of the visited ecosystem, and in the different forms of relationship provided by the visitation itinerary. This paper aims to compare two different sets of solutions on best pathways for biodiversity conservation present in a specific territory in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, in southern Bahia. We look specifically at three interconnected administrative instances: the Tupinambá de Olivença Indigenous Land; the Una Biological Reserve; and the Una Wildlife Refuge. We show that different perspectives regarding what it means to preserve nature come into focus in this territory. These are intertwined with power relations that highlight the inequality in the legitimacy of different groups in decision making for environmental governance. We map the causes and solutions for biodiversity degradation proposed by two contrasting narratives: the Indigenous perspective and the institutionalized western science-based environmentalism developed by state agencies and non-governmental organizations that work with conservation projects in the region. We expect to equalize these contrasting perspectives that are commonly seen in hierarchical terms. We conclude by advocating for managing combinations of diverse sets of knowledge and for pluralism in conservation efforts that accounts for underlying power relations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The COVID-19 pandemic is the most profound crisis of the twenty-first century. The SARS-CoV-2 virus was first registered in Brazil on March 2020, and its social and economic repercussions have been catastrophic. This paper investigates how to apply model predictive control (MPC) algorithms to plan appropriate social distancing policies that mitigate the pandemic effects. We consider MPC applications for the states of Bahia and Santa Catarina (Brazil), two regions of very different social and cultural demographics. We use Susceptible-Infected-Recovered-Deceased model to describe the pandemic dynamics in these two states, for which parameters are identified using a constrained optimization procedure. The control input to the process is a social isolation guideline passed to the population. Two MPC frameworks are developed and discussed: (a) a centralized approach, which coordinates a single predictive control policy for both states, and (b) a distributed strategy, for which a single MPC problem is solved for each state. We provide a series of simulation results in order to illustrate and compare the results obtained with both these MPC strategies. Discussions are drawn regarding the effectiveness of MPC to guide social distancing measures during pandemics and which approach (distributed, centralized) is more convenient, regarding different conditions. This paper presents a new methodology to assist geophysicists in determining the first-break event in a 3-D seismic data set using the well-known technique called dynamic time warping algorithm (DTW), which is usually used to find the optimal alignment between two time-series. We used the optimal path from the cost matrix to identify the first break in the seismogram using a few picks (seeds) made by an interpreter as a reference to perform this task. Furthermore, the data were pre-conditioned by the topographic and linear moveout to improve the method's accuracy. To demonstrate the technique's robustness, first, we applied the methodology in a synthetic seismic data. After demonstrating the efficiency of the algorithm, we applied the aforementioned methodology in the Polo-Miranga 3-D seismic cube located in the Recôncavo sedimentary basin, Bahia-Brazil, and in the seismic data acquired from the Blackfoot field in Alberta, Canada. The high-quality results showed consistency in determining the first break in all ranges of offsets, demonstrating an alternative way to accelerate this seismic processing step. Furthermore, we compared the results obtained by the proposed methodology with an algorithm based on comparing the short-time averages with long-time averages. Finally, we performed the static correction calculation to ensure that the time distortion resulting from the terrain and the low-velocity layer was mitigated in shoot gathers and in the stacked section. Smicridea McLachlan comprises 253 species divided into two subgenera: Smicridea and Rhyacophylax Müller. Smicridea (Smicridea) comprises species with males possessing two pairs of internal glands in abdominal segments VI and VII and hind legs bearing two pairs of spurs. Among species of this subgenus, those assigned to the Smicridea (Smicridea) fasciatella species group are characterized by a simple tubular phallus, presenting an apex with eversible sclerites. The aim of this paper is to describe and illustrate two new species in the S. (Smicridea) fasciatella species group and the female of Smicridea (Smicridea) capao Vilarino, Dias & Calor, 2019. Fieldwork was carried out in mountain ranges located in Bahia State, northeastern Brazil, both in the Atlantic Forest biome (Serra Bonita Reserve) and in the Caatinga biome (Chapada Diamantina Complex, Parque Municipal de Mucugê). Smicridea (Smicridea) kamakan sp. nov. and Smicridea (Smicridea) serrati sp. nov. can be recognized mainly by the morphology of tergum X and the inferior appendages. In addition, two couples of S. (Smicridea) capao were collected and resulted in the direct association of males and females; the female has a very conspicuous, oval sclerite VIII, with the apex constricted in the anterior portion, in ventral view. From 2015 to 2016, an epidemic of births of children with Congenital Zika Virus Syndrome emerged in Brazil, and the state of Bahia concentrated the highest incidence of cases. The official health guidelines recommended that the affected children and their families should be supported by interdisciplinary teams of early intervention. This paper aims to deepen the comprehension of regulation and affective-semiotic mediation processes involved in the early intervention with children with Congenital Zika Virus Syndrome and their families. It focus on the experiences of a professional interviewed in a public health service in Salvador, Bahia – Brazil, through narrative analysis and the theoretical-methodological foundations of Cultural Psychology of the Semiotic Dynamics. These approaches allowed the understanding of the processes of construction of meanings, symbolic action and affective-semiotic regulation. The care of Congenital Zika Virus Syndrome children by professionals relates to disquieting experiences, inter subjectivity, meaning construction, affections and symbolic actions. These dynamic processes allowed the professional to better adapt to regulation and affective-semiotic mediation, as well as her own performance in face of children and their families. Censuses and other surveys responsible for gathering socioeconomic data are expensive and time consuming. For this reason, in poor and developing countries there often is a long gap between these surveys, which hinders the appropriate formulation of public policies as well as the development of researches. One possible approach to overcome this challenge for some socioeconomic indicators is to use satellite imagery to estimate these variables, although it is not possible to replace demographic census surveys completely due to its territorial coverage, level of disaggregation of information and large set of information. Even though using orbital images properly requires, at least, a basic remote sensing knowledge level, these images have the advantage of being commonly free and easy to access. In this paper, we use daytime and nighttime satellite imagery and apply a transfer learning technique to estimate average income, GDP per capita and a constructed water index at the city level in two Brazilian states, Bahia and Rio Grande do Sul. The transfer learning approach could explain up to 64% of the variation in city-level variables depending on the state and variable. Although data from different countries may be considerably different, results are consistent with the literature and encouraging as it is a first analysis of its kind for Brazil. The present paper describes new fossil materials (skull and some postcranial elements) collected in November 2020 in Engrunado cave in Nova Redenção municipality, Bahia, Brazil. This material was attributed to a sub‐adult specimen of Smilodon populator Lund, 1842, estimated to be 17–18 months old and with a body mass of 185 kg when it died. Based on its body mass, this individual could have hunted animals with a typical and maximum potential prey body mass of 302 and 1004 kg, respectively. Furthermore, it may have had a high dietary niche overlap with adult specimens of S. populator and other large carnivorans, such as Panthera onca (Linnaeus, 1758), probably hunting different species to avoid competition with them. This paper aims to assess the sustainability of coffee production in Brazil by a framework at the farm level. The framework developed comprises four dimensions of sustainability structured from the literature review. Primary data were collected from 20 coffee farms selected from the most producing communities in the Planalto de Vitória da Conquista locality, sited in Centro-Sul Baiano middle region at the Bahia state. The main environmental issues identified related to coffee farmers are inadequate management of water consumption, influenced by the lack of knowledge about irrigation techniques in some cases, and the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. The economic evaluation of the activity revealed a low index of producers belonging to a class organization. In social aspects the issues are low level of technical/technological instruction for coffee producers, temporary workers are often used, the old age of most producers, the lack of family succession for the activity, low incomes, the high number of temporary workers, and the absence of the worker gains. As for the technical dimension, only half of the farmers invest in innovation, which causes high obsolescence of their equipment and machinery and a low participation rate in training courses. In the environmental dimension, the farmers return the packages of pesticides to the stores where they bought them. In the technical dimension, most farmers perform soil analysis. Besides addressing the identified challenges, the initiatives can help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, especially the 9th, 12th, and 13th. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Afro-Brazilian religion of Candomblé arose during the Atlantic slave trade and has unmistakable Yorùbá influences. In the city of Salvador, the term nação ketu [Ketu nation] is used among the oldest temples in describing Yorùbá heritage. This has led some scholars to assume that the founders came from the Yorùbá kingdom by that name. This paper critically examines the idea of Kétu origins, taking as a case study the temple Ilê Axé Iyá Nassô Oká, a national historic heritage site in Brazil that is recognized by UNESCO as a site of diasporic memory. The paper shows that the first generations of leadership were dominated by people from Ọ̀yọ́ and that the term ketu emerged not as an allusion to ethnic origins but perhaps as a metaphor for a heterogeneous cultural context in which Yorùbá speakers from disparate regions lived in close coexistence. Background: Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL), a peripheral T-cell leukemia/lymphoma associated with the human T-cell lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1), has been classified following the clinical forms defined by Shimoyama in 1991. A suggestion to modify Shimoyama's classification was proposed in 2007 to differentiate within the smoldering patients those who presented nodules or tumors in the skin without lung involvement, which was named the primary cutaneous tumoral (PCT) form of ATLL. In the present study, according to their clinicopathological characteristics, we estimated the mortality rates of 143 ATLL patients from Bahia, Brazil. We also evaluated the importance of classifying PCT/ATLL separately from the smoldering type on disease prognosis. Methodology/Principal findings: Diagnosis of ATLL was established based on a positive serology for HTLV-1, histopathological and/or cytological diagnosis of peripheral T-cell leukemia/lymphoma. Patients were clinically grouped according to Shimoyama's classification, considering PCT variants separately from the smoldering cases. Bivariate and multivariable survival analyses were applied to identify factors associated with disease prognosis. Significant differences in the median survival time were observed between the clinical types, with the smoldering type presenting the longest median survival (109 months) compared to the other forms (<50 months); the median survival for PCT/ATLL was 20 months. Multivariable analysis confirmed that ATLL clinical types were associated with survival, with a better prognosis for patients with the smoldering and chronic types. Furthermore, skin involvement was related to a worse outcome in the multivariable analysis, regardless of the clinical form and presence of lymphadenopathy. Conclusions/Significance: Our results reinforce the importance of considering the PCT/ATLL separately from the smoldering type when classifying ATLL to better define prognosis and treatment, given the significant difference in the survival of patients between the smoldering form and PCT/ATLL. Skin involvement should also be considered an independent prognostic factor in patients with ATLL. Author summary: The human T-cell lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1) may cause serious diseases, such as adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL), which can manifest itself in different clinical forms. In this paper, we investigated the survival of 143 Brazilian ATLL patients, according to the clinical form and other clinicopathological characteristics using bivariate and multivariable analyses. The original clinical classification of ATLL was employed; however, we considered the primary cutaneous tumoral (PCT) ATLL and the smoldering type separately. We found statistically significant differences in the mortality rates by clinical types and highlighted the better prognosis of patients with the smoldering type (mortality rate: 0.6 per 100 person-years) compared to those with PCT (mortality rate: 5.3 per 100 person-years). This finding emphasizes the importance of considering the PCT/ATLL separately from the smoldering type when using the ATLL classification to determine prognosis and treatment. A disease is considered neglected when it is not given due priority in health policies despite the social relevance of that disease, either in terms of the number of individuals affected by it or its morbidity or mortality. Although the causes are structural, neglect in health does not occur in a vacuum. In this paper, we explore how sickle cell disease (SCD) is constructed and neglected in Brazil, based on insights from our long-term participatory qualitative research in the state of Bahia. We present five overarching themes relevant to the social production of SCD, and associated health policies in Brazil: (1) The achievements and setbacks to overcome neglect in SCD, (2) Continuity of comprehensive SCD care; (3) Social movements of people with SCD; (4) Biocultural citizenship; and (5) Academic advocacy. We conclude that it is insufficient to merely recognize the health inequities that differentiate white and black populations in Brazil; racism must be understood as both a producer and a reproducer of this process of neglect. We conclude with a set of recommendations for the main SCD stakeholder groups committed to improving the lives of people living with SCD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes the count/mass distinction in Patxohã, a revitalized language spoken in Bahia and Minas Gerais, Brazil. We observe that only count nouns can be directly combined with numerals and that only count nouns can co-occur with plural determiners. Furthermore, only count nouns can be combined with size adjectives. As for quantifiers, we observe that at least one quantifier in the language (nitxi) can be combined with count and mass nouns, but trigger different interpretations depending on the noun it is combined with. The electrodialysis reversal (EDR) technology was applied as tertiary treatment for final effluent from a Kraft pulp mill industry located in Bahia, Brazil. Two samples were evaluated: first, the final effluent treated by conventional processes (FE); the second one was additionally filtered by sand and activated carbon (FEAC). The tests in a pilot plant were carried out in batch mode, with electrode's polarity reversion. Temperature, pH and electrical conductivity measurements were performed during EDR treatment. Solutions before and after the EDR treatment were submitted to physicochemical characterization in order to determine the system efficiency. Chloride and sulfide concentrations have been reduced by up to 98.6 and 100% respectively. Only for FE treatment it was observed fouling and scaling occurrence, due to high organic and inorganic ions concentrations. In addition, the evaluated ions were satisfactorily removed by EDR for both effluents, giving to them the suitable quality for disposal or reuse in industrial processes. The study presents a mitigating solution to environmental and technological problems, itself as a viable alternative in the tertiary treatment of effluents from the Kraft process in the pulp industry. The historic Imperial Dom Pedro II Bridge, located in Bahia, Brazil, underwent a major rehabilitation program that began in 2018. All tensioned diagonals, made of puddled iron, were replaced with new components, made of stronger steel. This paper presents a numerical model of the Dom Pedro II Bridge capable of reproducing structural performance before and during the replacement work. Numerical results were verified by the experimental data derived from monitoring systems installed in the bridge on several occasions. The differences observed from the numerical results could be justified by the bridge's age and maintenance condition. In general, the numerical results were fairly similar to the measured data, indicating the numerical solution could be used to assess other sequences of tensioned diagonal replacements. It was concluded that the replacement work improved the safety of the bridge, and the proposed modeling process may be suitable for other sequences of replacements, including other steel truss bridges. The managers realize the importance of high service quality and the level of competitiveness which comes with it. The problem of today's quality assessment scales is in lack of the overall assessment of the service quality specifically designed for the banking sector. Bahia and Nantel (2000) developed Bank Service Quality (BSQ) scale, which is composed of six dimensions, namely: effectiveness and assurance, access, price, tangibles, service portfolio and reliability. The objective of this paper is to extend the BSQ measurement scale to measure dimensions which were not covered in the original. The newly added dimension will measure the quality of e-banking and the quality of mobile e-banking service. The new extended version of BSQ scale has already been cross-culturally adapted and employed in the banks in Serbia. An empirical study captured customers' evaluation of the service quality, a total of 201 clients were surveyed. Statistical techniques such as Cronbach's-alpha, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) were employed. The findings suggested that the new extended BSQ scale is statistically significant reliable and valid. In this paper, we present an extension of the Poisson Zero-Modified model with Normal and Generalized Log-Gamma random effects. The random effect induces correlation and accommodate the intrinsic variability of each individual. The Generalized Log-Gamma effect is a generalized Normal effect and can be used in atypical situations where the Normal effect is not appropriate. In particular, the mixed Zero-Modified Poisson model allows us to deal with longitudinal count data, without requiring any previous knowledge about data characteristics, mainly to the number of zero observations (zero-inflated or zero-deflated). We consider the maximum likelihood approach to estimate the model parameters. A simulation study is presented to evaluate the estimators' performance. A real data set referring to the number of notification of infant deaths in the municipalities of the state of Bahia/Brazil is analyzed. Small-scale mining is an important source of income for many communities worldwide. However, many small-scale mining enterprises lack good management and mining practices and the limited funds available for exploration are often allocated inefficiently. This paper introduces a method of comparable values: a practical, low-cost and effective method for prioritization and selection of exploration targets in small-scale mining. The proposed method combines local geological mapping with a geological uncertainty assessment tool that indicates the risk associated with geological uncertainty for each target. By properly selecting exploration targets, small-scale miners can reduce the project risks and maximize the value resulting from investment that is more effective in exploration. The method of comparable values was applied to a small-scale project in a block of six manganese-rich claims in the state of Bahia, Brazil. The proposed method resulted in proper target selection with a time reduction of 50% and a cost savings of 76% when compared with those of traditional geological mapping work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tillandsia (Bromeliaceae) species have high endemism, and due to their strong ornamental potential, predatory extraction is threatening the extinction or drastic population reduction of many of them. In light of this scenario, it is necessary to find strategies for the conservation of these endangered species. The objective of this study was to evaluate two seed preservation strategies (freezing at − 5 °C and cryopreservation at − 196 °C) for 20 Tillandsia species occurring in the state of Bahia. We initially evaluated the morphometry, thousand-seed weight, and water content, followed by tests of germination and desiccation. After selecting the best result of the germination test (Germitest paper and incubation at 30 °C) and desiccation (3 h on silica gel), we established conservation tests utilizing two temperatures (freezing at − 5 °C and liquid nitrogen at − 196 °C), with storage times of 1, 7, 30, 180 and 450 days. Analysis of variance indicated that the 20 species had different behaviors when submitted to the two temperatures and different storage times. After 450 days there was a reduction in the germination percentage and germination speed index (GSI) of all the species studied when the seeds were preserved in the freezer. The storage in liquid nitrogen was efficient for the preservation of Tillandsia seeds when dried to a moisture content of approximately 7%. In this paper, we provide a retrospective cohort study with patients that have been hospitalized for general or intensive care unit admission due to COVID-19, between March 3 and July 29, 2020, in the state of Bahia, Brazil. We aim to correlate those patients' demographics, symptoms and comorbidities, with the risk of mortality from COVID-19, length of hospital stay, and time from diagnosis to definitive outcome. On the basis of a dataset provided by the Health Secretary of the State of Bahia, we selected 3,896 hospitalized patients from a total of 154,868 COVID-19 patients that included non-hospitalized patients and patients with invalid registration in the dataset. Then, we statistically analyzed whether there was a significant correlation between the patient record data and the COVID-19 pandemic, and our main findings reinforced by the use of a multivariable logistic regression were that older age (Odds Ratio [OR] = 1.03, 95% Confidence Interval [CI] = 1.03-1.04, p-value (p) <0.001), an initial symptom of shortness of breath (OR = 1.88, 95% CI = 1.60-2.20, p < 0.001), and the presence of comorbidities, mainly chronic kidney disease (OR = 2.41, 95% CI = 1.67-3.48, p < 0.001) are related to an increased risk of mortality from COVID-19. On the other hand, sore throat (OR = 0.74, 95% CI = 0.58-0.95, p = 0.02) and length of hospital stay (OR = 0.96, 95% CI = 0.58-0.95, p < 0.001) are more related to a reduced risk of mortality from COVID-19. Moreover, a multivariable linear regression conducted with statistically significant variables (p < 0.05) showed that age (OR = 0.97, 95% CI = 0.95-0.98, p < 0.001) and time from diagnosis to definitive outcome (OR = 1.67, 95% CI = 1.64-1.71, p < 0.001) are associated with the length of hospital stay. The taxa of the genus Megasoma Kirby, 1825 (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae, Dynastinae) related to M. gyas (Jablonsky in Herbst, 1785) are revised. Megasoma (M.) gyas is recognized as a monotypic species restricted to the Caatinga biome of northeastern Brazil. Megasoma gyas rumbucheri Fischer, 1968, is considered as a new synonym of M. gyas. The "long-horned M. gyas" is recognized as a separate polytypic species M. (M.) typhon (Olivier, 1789) with the nominative subspecies occurring through the Mata Atlântica biome of Brazil, from Bahia to São Paulo states and M. (M.) typhon prandii Milani, 2008 restricted to a small area in the state of Santa Catarina, South Brazil. Megasoma gyas porioni Nagai is considered as a new synonym of M. typhon typhon. The "short-horned M. gyas" occurring in Minas Gerais, São Paulo, and southwestern Bahia, is recognized as a separate new species and described as M. (M.) hyperion sp. nov. The paper includes an historical research and the redescriptions of the other nominal species of the genus. Distribution maps and a key to species in the M. This paper outlines an adaptable concept of hybridity to frame and facilitate fieldwork, research, and writing. It combines geographical theories of place and methodology to propose a hybrid approach to mixed-method research. Hybrid field-work iterates and mixes multiple methods for imagining and co-conducting research in and with places. Reflections on the author's fieldwork in Northeast Brazil illustrate the approach. Janusia is a South American genus of flowering plants. Most of its 15 described species are centered in Brazil, where they are found in diverse habitats across the Caatinga and Cerrado biomes, and a few other species can be found in the Atlantic Forest region. This paper describes Janusia longibracteolata, a new species endemic to semideciduous forests in the state of Bahia, Brazil, at elevations of 900 to 1000 m. This study was based on fieldwork and a study of herbarium collections, which resulted in photos, dried preserved material, and information about the new species and its environment. The most notable morphological characters that distinguish the new species are its subulate floral bracts and bracteoles, which are the largest known in the genus. This new species is described, illustrated, and compared with the other species in Janusia. This novelty underscores the need to preserve Bahia's remaining semideciduous forests and to increase botanical exploration in this region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Drymaeus nigroflavus is a newly described species found in the region of Itapebi, Bahia, Brazil, near the Jequitinhonha River. This species is characterized by its whitish shell adorned with dark, spiral bands that are uniform and spaced apart. Its genital system exhibits a very short penis and bursa copulatrix, as well as a spermoviduct with a wide, coiled uterus and a very narrow prostate, among other anatomical idiosyncrasies. Environmental histories of the African diaspora challenge Eurocentric interpretations of the Columbian Exchange by identifying African antecedents in New World landscapes and cultures. This paper joins that effort by tracing the formation of African oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) landscapes in Bahia, Brazil. Long essential in many West African societies, the African oil palm and its products diffused to Bahia early in the colonial period. Palm oil became an integral component of Afro-Brazilian culture and cuisine, and the palm groves that yield the oil represent an Afro-Brazilian landscape. Although the palm's West African origins are well known, and despite its importance in local cultures and global economies, studies of Bahia's African oil palm landscapes remain rare and generally ahistorical. This paper marshals evidence from colonial archives, traveller's accounts, ethnographies, fieldwork and digital geographic data to analyse the formation of Bahia's Dende Coast 0Costa do Dende, or Palm Oil Coast). While Africans and Afro-Brazilians emerge as principal actors, the analysis places humans within a broader socioecological framework to demonstrate how historical processes, geographies, agroecologies and human agency all coalesced to establish and sustain Bahia's Afro-Brazilian landscape. This paper examines the long-term development of palm oil landscapes in the northeastern Brazilian state of Bahia. In contrast to the agroindustrial monocultures that dominate global production, palm oil in Bahia emerges from a biodiverse cultural landscape constructed through five centuries of transatlantic socioecological exchange. Native to West Africa, African oil palms ( Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) diffused to the New World during colonial overseas expansion, becoming established in Bahia by the seventeenth century. There the palms helped form a complex cultural landscape that continues to supply local alimentary and spiritual demands for palm oil—an essential resource in many Afro-Brazilian cultural expressions. Extending approximately 70 km south of the capital Salvador, Bahia's traditional palm oil landscapes are now officially dubbed the Dendê Coast ( Costa do Dendê ), following the Kimbundu Bantu-inspired Afro-Brazilian term for palm oil. Historically colonial officials and elite Brazilians showed little interest in Bahia's palm oil economy, effectively conceding it to Afro-descendants until the mid-twentieth century. Since then, a series of modern development interventions have sought to transform the complex, biodiverse landscapes of the Dendê Coast into a legible oil palm monoculture based on an improved hybrid variety. Yet despite recurrent top-down efforts, emergent or “subspontaneous” groves and traditional polycultural landscapes continue to dominate land use in the region. Drawing on ethnography, landscape interpretations, archives, and geospatial analysis, this paper analyzes the historical development of Bahia's palm oil economy, recounting five centuries of socioecological changes on the Dendê Coast. The study integrates recent geographical treatments of the African diaspora with theories of complexity to comprehend the ongoing proliferation of Bahia's traditional palm oil landscapes despite top-down promotion of modern monocultures. Background: In most cases, Zika virus (ZIKV) causes a self-limited acute illness in adults, characterized by mild clinical symptoms that resolve within a few days. Immune responses, both innate and adaptive, play a central role in controlling and eliminating virus-infected cells during the early stages of infection. Aim: To test the hypothesis that circulating T cells exhibit phenotypic and functional activation characteristics during the viremic phase of ZIKV infection. Methods: A comprehensive analysis using mass cytometry was performed on peripheral blood mononuclear cells obtained from patients with acute ZIKV infection (as confirmed by RT-PCR) and compared with that from healthy donors (HD). The frequency of IFN-γ-producing T cells in response to peptide pools covering immunogenic regions of structural and nonstructural ZIKV proteins was quantified using an ELISpot assay. Results: Circulating CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes from ZIKV-infected patients expressed higher levels of IFN-γ and pSTAT-5, as well as cell surface markers associated with proliferation (Ki-67), activation ((HLA-DR, CD38) or exhaustion (PD1 and CTLA-4), compared to those from HD. Activation of CD4+ and CD8+ memory T cell subsets, including Transitional Memory T Cells (TTM), Effector Memory T cells (TEM), and Effector Memory T cells Re-expressing CD45RA (TEMRA), was prominent among CD4+ T cell subset of ZIKV-infected patients and was associated with increased levels of IFN-γ, pSTAT-5, Ki-67, CTLA-4, and PD1, as compared to HD. Additionally, approximately 30% of ZIKV-infected patients exhibited a T cell response primarily directed against the ZIKV NS5 protein. Conclusion: Circulating T lymphocytes spontaneously produce IFN-γ and express elevated levels of pSTAT-5 during the early phase of ZIKV infection whereas recognition of ZIKV antigen results in the generation of virus-specific IFN-γ-producing T cells.
