Oriented strand board (OSB) has become a popular building material for residential construction, but little research has been conducted on its use as a finish floor material. The study investigated the quality and performance of OSB as an alternative to traditional engineered wood products for finish floors. Four types of OSB finish floors using a mixture of garden and urban tree toppings were produced and evaluated, along with different types and levels of resin and mat moisture content. The finish floor panels were subjected to a battery of tests, including concentrated loading, indentation, falling ball impact resistance, abrasion resistance, and surface wettability. The findings showed that urea formaldehyde resin with garden tree toppings performed best in floor surface indentation, abrasion resistance, and falling ball indentation. The phenol formaldehyde resin with garden tree toppings, on the other hand, showed less moisture absorption and swelling during surface wetting tests and better resistance to force application in the concentrated loading test. Our qualitative comparison revealed that OSB finish floor production using 100% garden tree topping strands and 12% urea formaldehyde resin, along with 14% mat moisture content, produced the best results. Hemicellulose is an important component of the plant cell wall which vary in structure and composition between plant species. The research of hemicellulose structures is primarily focused on fast-growing plants during xylogenesis, with slow-growing and rare trees receiving the least attention. Here, hemicellulose structure of the rare species Castanopsis hystrix during xylogenesis was analyzed. Acetyl methyl glucuronide xylan was the most common type of hemicellulose in C. hystrix, with a unique tetrasaccharide structure at the reducing end. Hemicellulose type, structure, molecular weight, thermal stability, biosynthesis and acetyl substitution content and pattern remained stable during the xylogenesis in C. hystrix, which could be attributed to its slow growth. The stable polymer type, low side chain modification and high acetyl substitution of hemicellulose throughout the stems are among the reasons for the hardness and corrosion resistance properties of C. hystrix wood. The world is currently transitioning from a fossil-fuel-driven energy economy to one that is supplied by more renewable and sustainable materials. Trees as the most abundant renewable bioresource have attracted significant attention for advanced materials and manufacturing in this epochal transition. Trees are composed with complex structures and components such as trunk (stem and bark), leaf, flower, seed, and root. Although many excellent reviews have been published regarding advanced applications of wood and wood-derived biopolymers in different fields, such as energy, electronics, biomedical, and water treatment, no reviews have revisited and systematically discussed functional materials and even devices derived from trees in a full scope yet. Therefore, a timely summary of the recent development of materials and structures derived from different parts of trees for sustainability is prsented here. A concise introduction to the different parts of the trees is given first, which is followed by the corresponding chemistry and preparation of functional materials using various biopolymers from trees. The most promising applications of biopolymer-based materials are discussed subsequently. A comprehensive review of the different parts of trees as sustainable functional materials and devices for critical applications is thus provided., (© 2020 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

The impacts of white-rot fungi on altering wood chemistry have been studied mostly in vitro. However, in vivo approaches may enable better assessment of the nature of interactions between saprotrophic fungi and host tree in nature. Hence, decayed and sound wood samples were collected from a naturally infected tree (Carpinus betulus L.). Fruiting bodies of the white rot fungus Trametes versicolor grown on the same tree were identified using rDNA ITS sequencing. Chemical compositions (cellulose and lignin) of both sound and infected wood were studied. FT-IR spectroscopy was used to collect spectra of decayed and un-decayed wood samples. The results of chemical compositions indicated that T. versicolor reduced cellulose and lignin in similar quantities. Fungal activities in decayed wood causes serious decline in pH content. The amount of alcohol-benzene soluble extractives was severely decreased, while a remarkable increase was found in 1% sodium hydroxide soluble and hot water extractive contents in the decayed wood samples, respectively. FT-IR analyses demonstrated that T. versicolor causes simultaneous white rot in the hornbeam tree in vivo which is in line with in vitro experiments.

The effects of recycling on the microstructure and properties of bleached aspen chemithermomechanical pulp (CTMP) fibres were systematically investigated. The low-temperature nitrogen adsorption and atomic force microscopy results showed that a substantial amount of large pores and most of the very small pores in the fibre wall closed and the fibre surface became less coarse and porous during recycling. The partial cocrystallisation of cellulose microfibrils took place, as reflected in the increment of the cellulose crystallinity and the width of the crystallite in the 0 0 2 lattice plane. These irreversible structural changes caused significant hornification of the recycled fibres, leading to the loss of swelling and bonding capability. The decrease of the tensile index, burst index, and tear index further demonstrated the deterioration of the fibre properties. The main objective of the present study was to control and optimize the preparation of nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) from the date palm tree by monitoring the oxidation time (degree of oxidation) of the pristine cellulose and the number of cycles through the homogenizer. The oxidation was monitored by TEMPO (1-oxo-2,2,6,6-tétraméthylpipyridine 1-oxyle) mediated oxidation. Evidence of the successful isolation of NFC was given by FE-SEM observation revealing fibrils with a width in the range 20-30nm, depending of the oxidation time. The evolution of the transparency of the aqueous NFC suspension and carboxylic content according to the degree of oxidation and number of cycles were also analyzed by UV-vis transmittance, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), conductimetry, and X-ray diffraction analysis. A significant NFC length reduction occurred during the TEMPO-mediated oxidation. The rheological properties of NFC suspensions were characterized as function of the oxidation time. Dynamic rheology showed that the aqueous suspension behavior changed from liquid to gel depending on the concentration. The highest concentration studied was 1wt% and the modulus reached 1MPa which was higher than for non-oxidized NFC. An explanation of the gel structure evolution with the oxidation time applied to the NFC (NFC length) was proposed. A new method has been developed for the quantitative determination of hydroxycinnamic acids participating in ester or ether linkages to the cell wall polymers. The method is based on mild alkaline hydrolysis followed by acid hydrolysis or mild alkaline hydrolysis, which partially removed esterified phenolic acids, and high-temperature concentrated alkaline treatment, which cleaved both the ester and ether linkages. It was found that traditional mild alkaline hydrolysis and acid hydrolysis released only part of the ester- and ether-linked phenolic acids, respectively. Approximately half (44.0-47.9%) of the total ester-linked p-coumaric acid and 18.2-32.6% of the total esterified ferulic acid remained ester-linked to the mild alkali-soluble lignin polymers, and 55.0-72.0% of the total ether-linked p-coumaric acid and 37.5-53.8% of the total ether-linked ferulic acid remained ether-linked to the solubilized lignin molecules after the acid hydrolysis. To correct this, a second mild alkaline hydrolysis of the alkali-soluble lignin preparations and acid hydrolysis of the solubilized lignin fractions, obtained from the first acid hydrolysis of the cell wall materials, was investigated. On the basis of this new method, a majority of the cell wall p-coumaric acid (55.8-81.5%) was found to be ester-linked to cell wall components, mainly to lignin, and about half of the cell wall ferulic acid is etherified through its phenolic oxygen to the cell wall lignin component, whereas the remainder is esterified to the cell wall hemicelluloses and/or lignin in different plant materials.

The extent of genetic identity observed in the young individuals which were micropropagated from a single Eucalyptus individual was analyzed by using DNA-fingerprinting. Among 40,000 tissue-cultured-seedings of E.citriodora, 200 plants were randomly chosen so that each total DNA might be extracted from their leaves. Using these DNAs as template, PCR was performed with some primers we found in advance that leads polymorphism for DNA of E. citriodora. In this study, all over the 200 cases, the band pattern formed cDNA fragment on a gel after electrophoresis was the identical one mutually.

We found a novel PCR-primer which can be used for the identification on "elite-tree-selection". This primer was designed for selective hybridization at the both ends of microsatellite loci, which is well known as one of the most highpervariable region of DNA. After PCR-fingerprinting on five Eucalyptus species (E. globulus, E.citriodora, E.grandis, E. maidenii, E.bicostata), with our primer, DNA-polymorphism was observed all over the cases.

A total DNA extracted from Eucalyptus globlus, E. citriodora, or a subspecies of E. gunnii (Maruha Yu-kari) being used as an template, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) was performed with 40 kinds of commercially available random primers (Operon, OPA-01-20 and OPB-01-20). After electrophoresis of PCR-products on agarose gel, we analyzed the band pattern formed by DNA-fragments with 0.5-3.0 kbp as molecular weight. As a remuneration for the examination in which forty 10-mer arbitrary oligonucleotides were tried to be used as primers in PCR for each species, we found that 9 primers (for E. globlus) leads polymorphism, 6 primers for E. citriodora, and 6 primers for Maruha Yu-kari.

A cDNA clone (pLP6) of a gene which is repressed under water deficit was isolated from a loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) cDNA library and characterized. The predicted polypeptide encoded by pLP6 bears strong resemblance to a number of Class I chitinases. However, LP6 lacks most of the amino-terminal and, consequently the signal peptide, cysteine-rich chitin-binding domain and glycine/proline-rich "hinge' region, diagnostic of Class I chitinases, are absent. Although the cDNA is similar in size to its mRNA, the long open reading frame encoding the LP6 protein commences halfway through the mRNA, implying a 5'-untranslated region of over 700 nucleotides. Subfragments from the 5' end of pLP6 hybridize to the same mRNA as do probes consisting of the entire cDNA. Reverse transcription(RT)-PCR experiments confirm that the cDNA derives from a single mRNA molecule. Analysis of the 5'-UTR revealed six upstream open reading frames and four inverted repeat structures. Expression of the pLP6 gene is repressed by water deficit stress and wounding. Possible functions and origin of this gene are discussed.
