We use the SAMI (Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral field spectrograph) galaxy survey to study the the kinematic morphology–density relation: the observation that the fraction of slow rotator galaxies increases towards dense environments. We build a logistic regression model to quantitatively study the dependence of kinematic morphology (whether a galaxy is a fast or slow rotator) on a wide range of parameters, without resorting to binning the data. Our model uses a combination of stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR), r -band half-light radius, and a binary variable based on whether the galaxy's observed ellipticity (ϵ) is less than 0.4. We show that, at fixed mass, size, SFR, and ϵ, a galaxy's local environmental surface density (log10(Σ5/Mpc−2)) gives no further information about whether a galaxy is a slow rotator, that is, the observed kinematic–morphology density relation can be entirely explained by the well-known correlations between environment and other quantities. We show how our model can be applied to different galaxy surveys to predict the fraction of slow rotators which would be observed and discuss its implications for the formation pathways of slow rotators. The stellar mass Tully–Fisher relation (STFR) and its scatter encode valuable information about the processes shaping galaxy evolution across cosmic time. However, we are still missing a proper quantification of the STFR slope and scatter dependence on the baryonic tracer used to quantify rotational velocity, on the velocity measurement radius and on galaxy integrated properties. We present a catalogue of stellar and ionized gas (traced by H |$\rm {\alpha }$| emission) kinematic measurements for a sample of galaxies drawn from the MaNGA Galaxy Survey, providing an ideal tool for galaxy formation model calibration and for comparison with high-redshift studies. We compute the STFRs for stellar and gas rotation at 1, 1.3 and 2 effective radii (R e). The relations for both baryonic components become shallower at 2 R e compared to 1 R e and 1.3 R e. We report a steeper STFR for the stars in the inner parts (≤1.3 R e) compared to the gas. At 2 R e, the relations for the two components are consistent. When accounting for covariances with integrated v /σ, scatter in the stellar and gas STFRs shows no strong correlation with: optical morphology, star formation rate surface density, tidal interaction strength or gas accretion signatures. Our results suggest that the STFR scatter is driven by an increase in stellar/gas dispersional support, from either external (mergers) or internal (feedback) processes. No correlation between STFR scatter and environment is found. Nearby Universe galaxies have their stars and gas in statistically different states of dynamical equilibrium in the inner parts (≤1.3 R e), while at 2 R e the two components are dynamically coupled. Gas-rich galaxies are typically star forming. We make use of H  i -MaNGA, a programme of H  i follow-up for the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey of the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys, to construct a sample of unusual neutral hydrogen (H  i , 21 cm)-rich galaxies that have low star formation rates (SFRs), using infrared colour from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer as a proxy for specific SFR. Out of a set of 1575 MaNGA galaxies with H  i -MaNGA detections, we find that 83 (5 per cent) meet our selection criteria to be H  i rich with low SFR. We construct two stellar mass-matched control samples: H  i -rich galaxies with typical SFR (high SF control) and H  i -poor galaxies with low SFR (low H  i control). We investigate the properties of each of these samples, comparing physical parameters such as ionization state maps, stellar and ionized gas velocity and dispersion, environment measures, metallicity, and morphology to search for the reasons why these unusual H  i -rich galaxies are not forming stars. We find evidence for recent external accretion of gas in some galaxies (via high counter-rotating fractions), along with some evidence for active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback (from a high central low-ionization emission-line region and/or red geyser fraction), and bar quenching (via an enhanced strong bar fraction). Some galaxies in the sample are consistent with simply having their H  i in a high angular momentum, large-radius, low-density disc. The connection between quenching mechanisms, which rapidly turn star-forming systems into quiescent, and the properties of the galaxy population remains difficult to discern. In this work we investigate the physical properties of MaNGA and SAMI galaxies at different stages of their star formation history. Specifically, we compare galaxies with signatures of recent quenching (Quenched) – |$\rm H \, \alpha$| in absorption and low Dn (4000) – with the rest of the low star-forming and active population (Retired and Ageing, respectively). The analysis is performed in terms of characteristics such as the total stellar mass, half-light radius, velocity-to-dispersion ratio, metallicity, and environment. We find that the Ageing population comprises a heterogeneous mixture of galaxies, preferentially late-type systems, with diverse physical properties. Retired galaxies, formerly Ageing or Quenched systems, are dominated by early-type high-mass galaxies found both at low and dense environments. Most importantly, we find that recently quenched galaxies are consistent with a population of compact low-mass satellite systems, with higher metallicities than their Ageing analogues. We argue that this is compatible with being quenched after undergoing a star-burst phase induced by environmental processes (e.g. ram pressure). However, we also detect a non-negligible fraction of field central galaxies likely quenched by internal processes. This study highlights that, in order to constrain the mechanisms driving galaxy evolution, it is crucial to distinguish between old (Retired) and recently quenched galaxies, thus requiring at least two estimates of the specific star formation rate over different time-scales. Misalignments between the rotation axis of stars and gas are an indication of external processes shaping galaxies throughout their evolution. Using observations of 3068 galaxies from the SAMI Galaxy Survey, we compute global kinematic position angles for 1445 objects with reliable kinematics and identify 169 (12 per cent) galaxies which show stellar-gas misalignments. Kinematically decoupled features are more prevalent in early-type/passive galaxies compared to late-type/star-forming systems. Star formation is the main source of gas ionization in only 22 per cent of misaligned galaxies; 17 per cent are Seyfert objects, while 61 per cent show Low-Ionization Nuclear Emission-line Region features. We identify the most probable physical cause of the kinematic decoupling and find that, while accretion-driven cases are dominant, for up to 8 per cent of our sample, the misalignment may be tracing outflowing gas. When considering only misalignments driven by accretion, the acquired gas is feeding active star formation in only ∼1/4 of cases. As a population, misaligned galaxies have higher Sérsic indices and lower stellar spin and specific star formation rates than appropriately matched samples of aligned systems. These results suggest that both morphology and star formation/gas content are significantly correlated with the prevalence and timescales of misalignments. Specifically, torques on misaligned gas discs are smaller for more centrally concentrated galaxies, while the newly accreted gas feels lower viscous drag forces in more gas-poor objects. Marginal evidence of star formation not being correlated with misalignment likelihood for late-type galaxies suggests that such morphologies in the nearby Universe might be the result of preferentially aligned accretion at higher redshifts. Many processes have been proposed to explain the quenching of star formation in spiral galaxies and their transformation into S0s. These processes affect the bulge and disc in different ways, and so by isolating the bulge and disc spectra, we can look for these characteristic signatures. In this work, we used buddi to cleanly extract the spectra of the bulges and discs of 78 S0 galaxies in the MaNGA Survey. We compared the luminosity and mass weighted stellar populations of the bulges and discs, finding that bulges are generally older and more metal rich than their discs. When considering the mass and environment of each galaxy, we found that the galaxy stellar mass plays a more significant role on the formation of the bulges. Bulges in galaxies with masses |$\ge 10^{10}\, {\rm M}_\odot$| built up the majority of their mass rapidly early in their lifetimes, while those in lower mass galaxies formed over more extended time-scales and more recently. No clear difference was found in the formation or quenching processes of the discs as a function of galaxy environment. We conclude that more massive S0 galaxies formed through an inside-out scenario, where the bulge formed first and evolved passively while the disc underwent a more extended period of star formation. In lower mass S0s, the bulges and discs either formed together from the same material, or through an outside-in scenario. Our results therefore imply multiple formation mechanisms for S0 galaxies, the pathway of which is chiefly determined by a galaxy's current stellar mass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The stellar surface density within the inner 1 kpc (Σ1) has become a popular tool for understanding the growth of galaxies and its connection with the quenching of star formation. The emerging picture suggests that building a central dense core is a necessary condition for quenching. However, it is not clear whether changes in Σ1 trace changes in stellar kinematics and the growth of dispersion-dominated bulges. In this paper, we combine imaging from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey with stellar kinematics from the Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral-field unit and Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory surveys to quantify the correlation between Σ1 and the proxy for stellar spin parameter within one effective radius (λre) for 1599 nearby galaxies. We show that, on the star-forming main sequence and at fixed stellar mass, changes in Σ1 are mirrored by changes in λre. While forming stars, main-sequence galaxies remain rotationally-dominated systems, with their Σ1 increasing but their stellar spin staying either constant or slightly increasing. The picture changes below the main sequence, where Σ1 and λre are no longer correlated. Passive systems show a narrower range of Σ1, but a wider range of λre compared to star-forming galaxies. Our results indicate that, from a structural point of view, passive galaxies are a more heterogeneous population than star-forming systems, and may have followed a variety of evolutionary paths. This also suggests that, if dispersion-dominated bulges still grow significantly at z ∼ 0, this generally takes place during, or after, the quenching phase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bars inhabit the majority of local-Universe disc galaxies and may be important drivers of galaxy evolution through the redistribution of gas and angular momentum within discs. We investigate the star formation and gas properties of bars in galaxies spanning a wide range of masses, environments, and star formation rates using the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO galaxy survey. Using a robustly defined sample of 684 barred galaxies, we find that fractional (or scaled) bar length correlates with the host's offset from the star formation main sequence. Considering the morphology of the Hα emission we separate barred galaxies into different categories, including barred, ringed, and central configurations, together with Hα detected at the ends of a bar. We find that only low-mass galaxies host star formation along their bars, and that this is located predominantly at the leading edge of the bar itself. Our results are supported by recent simulations of massive galaxies, which show that the position of star formation within a bar is regulated by a combination of shear forces, turbulence, and gas flows. We conclude that the physical properties of a bar are mostly governed by the existing stellar mass of the host galaxy, but that they also play an important role in the galaxy's ongoing star formation. Dust attenuation in star-forming spiral galaxies affects stars and gas in different ways due to local variations in dust geometry. We present spatially resolved measurements of dust attenuation for a sample of 232 such star-forming spiral galaxies, derived from spectra acquired by the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey. The dust attenuation affecting the stellar populations of these galaxies (obtained using full spectrum stellar population fitting methods) is compared with the dust attenuation in the gas (derived from the Balmer decrement). Both of these attenuation measures increase for local regions of galaxies with higher star formation rates; the dust attenuation affecting the stellar populations increases more so than the dust attenuation in the gas, causing the ratio of the dust attenuation affecting the stellar populations to the dust attenuation in the gas to decrease for local regions of galaxies with higher star formation rate densities. No systematic difference is discernible in any of these dust attenuation quantities between the spiral arm and interarm regions of the galaxies. While both the dust attenuation in the gas and the dust attenuation affecting the stellar populations decrease with galactocentric radius, the ratio of the two quantities does not vary with radius. This ratio does, however, decrease systematically as the stellar mass of the galaxy increases. Analysis of the radial profiles of the two dust attenuation measures suggests that there is a disproportionately high concentration of birth clouds (incorporating gas, young stars, and clumpy dust) nearer to the centres of star-forming spiral galaxies. The Milky Way has been described as an anaemic spiral, but is its star formation rate (SFR) unusually low when compared to its peers? To answer this question, we define a sample of Milky Way analogues (MWAs) based on stringent cuts on the best literature estimates of non-transient structural features for the Milky Way. This selection yields only 176 galaxies from the whole of the SDSS DR7 spectroscopic sample which have morphological classifications in Galaxy Zoo 2, from which we infer SFRs from two separate indicators. The mean SFRs found are |$\log (\rm {SFR}_{SED}/\rm {M}_{\odot }~\rm {yr}^{-1})=0.53$| with a standard deviation of 0.23 dex from SED fits, and |$\log (\rm {SFR}_{W4}/\rm {M}_{\odot }~\rm {yr}^{-1})=0.68$| with a standard deviation of 0.41 dex from a mid-infrared calibration. The most recent estimate for the Milky Way's SFR of |$\log (\rm {SFR}_{MW}/\rm {M}_{\odot }~\rm {yr}^{-1})=0.22$| fits well within 2 |$\sigma$| of these values, where |$\sigma$| is the standard deviation of each of the SFR indicator distributions. We infer that the Milky Way, while being a galaxy with a somewhat low SFR, is not unusual when compared to similar galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spectra of galaxies contain a wealth of information about the stellar populations from which they are made. With integral field unit (IFU) surveys, such data can be used to map out stellar population properties across the face of a galaxy, allowing one to go beyond simple radial profiles and study details of non-axisymmetric structure. To-date, however, such studies have been limited by the quality of available data and the power of spectral analysis tools. We now take the next step and study the barred spiral galaxy MCG + 07-28-064 from observations obtained as part of the SDSS-IV MaNGA project. We find that we can decompose this galaxy into 'time slices,' which reveal the varying contributions that stars of differing ages make to its bar and spiral structure, offering new insight into the evolution of these features. We find evidence for the ongoing growth of the bar, including the most recent star formation on its leading edge, and for the underlying density wave responsible for spiral structure. This pilot study indicates that there is a wealth of untapped information on the spatial distribution of star formation histories available in the current generation of IFU galaxy surveys. We present a sample of 91 H  i galaxies with little or no star formation, and discuss the analysis of the integral field unit (IFU) spectra of 28 of these galaxies. We identified H  i galaxies from the H  i Parkes All-Sky Survey Catalog (HICAT) with Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) colours consistent with low specific star formation (<10−10.4 yr−1), and obtained optical IFU spectra with the Wide-Field Spectrograph (WiFeS). Visual inspection of the PanSTARRS, Dark Energy Survey, and Carnegie-Irvine imaging of 62 galaxies reveals that at least 32 galaxies in the sample have low levels of star formation, primarily in arms/rings. New IFU spectra of 28 of these galaxies reveals 3 galaxies with central star formation, 1 galaxy with low-ionization nuclear emission-line regions (LINERs), 20 with extended low-ionization emission-line regions (LIERs), and 4 with high excitation Seyfert (Sy) emission. From the spectroscopic analysis of H  i selected galaxies with little star formation, we conclude that 75 per cent of this population are LINERs/LIERs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Deriving a simple, analytic galaxy star formation history (SFH) using observational data is a complex task without the proper tool to hand. We therefore present snitch, an open source code written in python, developed to quickly (2 min) infer the parameters describing an analytic SFH model from the emission and absorption features of a galaxy spectrum dominated by star formation gas ionization. snitch uses the Flexible Stellar Population Synthesis models of Conroy, Gunn & White (2009), the MaNGA Data Analysis Pipeline and a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method in order to infer three parameters (time of quenching, rate of quenching, and model metallicity) which best describe an exponentially declining quenching history. This code was written for use on the MaNGA spectral data cubes but is customizable by a user so that it can be used for any scenario where a galaxy spectrum has been obtained, and adapted to infer a user defined analytic SFH model for specific science cases. Herein, we outline the rigorous testing applied to snitch and show that it is both accurate and precise at deriving the SFH of a galaxy spectra. The tests suggest that snitch is sensitive to the most recent epoch of star formation but can also trace the quenching of star formation even if the true decline does not occur at an exponential rate. With the use of both an analytical SFH and only five spectral features, we advocate that this code be used as a comparative tool across a large population of spectra, either for integral field unit data cubes or across a population of galaxy spectra. We examine the properties of a sample of 35 nearby passive spiral galaxies in order to determine their dominant quenching mechanism(s). All five low-mass (M★ < 1 x 1010M⨀) passive spiral galaxies are located in the rich Virgo cluster. This is in contrast to low-mass spiral galaxies with star formation, which inhabit a range of environments. We postulate that cluster-scale gas stripping and heating mechanisms operating only in rich clusters are required to quench low-mass passive spirals, and ram-pressure stripping and strangulation are obvious candidates. For higher mass passive spirals, while trends are present, the story is less clear. The passive spiral bar fraction is high: 74 ± 15 per cent, compared with 36 ± 5 per cent for a mass, redshift and T-type matched comparison sample of star-forming spiral galaxies. The high mass passive spirals occur mostly, but not exclusively, in groups, and can be central or satellite galaxies. The passive spiral group fraction of 74 ± 15 per cent is similar to that of the comparison sample of star-forming galaxies at 61 ± 7 per cent. We find evidence for both quenching via internal structure and environment in our passive spiral sample, though some galaxies have evidence of neither. From this, we conclude no one mechanism is responsible for quenching star formation in passive spiral galaxies -- rather, a mixture of mechanisms is required to produce the passive spiral distribution we see today. We present the mid-infrared star formation rates of 245 X-ray selected, nearby (z < 0.1) brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). A homogeneous and volume limited sample of BCGs was created by X-ray selecting clusters with Lx > 1 × 1044 erg s− 1. The Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) All WISE Data Release provides the first measurement of the 12 μm star formation indicator for all BCGs in the nearby Universe. Perseus A and Cygnus A are the only galaxies in our sample to have star formation rates of > 40 M⊙ yr− 1, indicating that these two galaxies are highly unusual at current times. Stellar populations of 99 ± 0.6 per cent of local BCGs are (approximately) passively evolving, with star formation rates of < 10 M⊙ yr− 1.
