We present observations from X-ray to mid-infrared wavelengths of the most energetic non-quasar transient ever observed, AT2021lwx. Our data show a single optical brightening by a factor >100 to a luminosity of 7 × 1045 erg s−1 and a total radiated energy of 1.5 × 1053 erg, both greater than any known optical transient. The decline is smooth and exponential and the ultraviolet–optical spectral energy distribution resembles a blackbody with a temperature of 1.2 × 104 K. Tentative X-ray detections indicate a secondary mode of emission, while a delayed mid-infrared flare points to the presence of dust surrounding the transient. The spectra are similar to recently discovered optical flares in known active galactic nuclei but lack some characteristic features. The lack of emission for the previous 7 yr is inconsistent with the short-term, stochastic variability observed in quasars, while the extreme luminosity and long time-scale of the transient disfavour the disruption of a single solar-mass star. The luminosity could be generated by the disruption of a much more massive star, but the likelihood of such an event occurring is small. A plausible scenario is the accretion of a giant molecular cloud by a dormant black hole of 108–109 solar masses. We present multiwavelength observations of supernova (SN) 2017hcc with the Chandra X-ray telescope and the X-ray telescope onboard Swift (Swift-XRT) in X-ray bands, with the Spitzer and the TripleSpec spectrometer in near-infrared (IR) and mid-IR bands and with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) for radio bands. The X-ray observations cover a period of 29 to 1310 d, with the first X-ray detection on day 727 with the Chandra. The SN was subsequently detected in the VLA radio bands from day 1000 onwards. While the radio data are sparse, synchrotron-self absorption is clearly ruled out as the radio absorption mechanism. The near- and the mid-IR observations showed that late time IR emission dominates the spectral energy distribution. The early properties of SN 2017hcc are consistent with shock breakout into a dense mass-loss region, with |$\dot{M} \sim 0.1$| M⊙ yr−1 for a decade. At few 100 d, the mass-loss rate declined to ∼0.02 M⊙ yr−1, as determined from the dominant IR luminosity. In addition, radio data also allowed us to calculate a mass-loss rate at around day 1000, which is two orders of magnitude smaller than the mass-loss rate estimates around the bolometric peak. These values indicate that the SN progenitor underwent an enhanced mass-loss event a decade before the explosion. The high ratio of IR to X-ray luminosity is not expected in simple models and is possible evidence for an asymmetric circumstellar region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High-redshift sub-millimetre galaxies (SMGs) are usually assumed to be powered by star formation. However, it has been clear for some time that >20 per cent of such sourcesbrighter than ≈3 mJy host quasars. Here, we analyse a complete sample of 12 sub-mm LABOCA/ALMA 870-μm sources in the centre of the William Herschel Deep Field (WHDF) with multiwavelength data available from the X-ray to the radio bands. Previously, two sources were identified as X-ray-absorbed quasars at z = 1.32 and z = 2.12. By comparing their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with unabsorbed quasars in the same field, we confirm that they are dust reddened although at a level significantly lower than implied by their X-ray absorption. Then, we compare the SEDs of all the sources to dust-reddened AGN and star-forming galaxy models. This optical/NIR comparison combined with Spitzer MIR colours and faint Chandra X-ray detections shows that 7/12 SMGs are best fitted with an obscured quasar model, a further 3/12 show no preference between AGN and star-forming templates, leaving only a z = 0.046 spiral galaxy and one unidentified source. So in our complete sample, the majority (10/12) of bright SMGs are at least as likely to fit an AGN as a star-forming galaxy template, although no claim is made to rule out the latter as SMG power sources. We then suggest modifications to a previous SMG number count model and conclude that obscured AGN in SMGs may still provide the dominant contribution to both the hard X-ray and sub-millimetre backgrounds. We present a large sample of infrared-luminous candidate active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that lack X-ray detections in Chandra, XMM-Newton, and NuSTAR fields. We selected all optically detected SDSS sources with redshift measurements, combined additional broadband photometry from WISE, UKIDSS, 2MASS, and GALEX, and modeled the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of our sample sources. We parameterize nuclear obscuration in our SEDs with and uncover thousands of powerful obscured AGNs that lack X-ray counterparts, many of which are identified as AGN candidates based on straightforward WISE photometric criteria. Using the observed luminosity correlation between rest-frame 2–10 keV () and rest-frame AGN (), we estimate the intrinsic X-ray luminosities of our sample sources and combine these data with flux limits from X-ray catalogs to determine lower limits on nuclear obscuration. Using the ratio of intrinsic-to-observed X-ray luminosity (), we find a significant fraction of sources with column densities approaching cm–2, suggesting that multiwavelength observations are necessary to account for the population of heavily obscured AGNs. We simulate the underlying distribution for the X-ray non-detected sources in our sample through survival analysis, and confirm the presence of AGN activity via X-ray stacking. We investigate the differences in the stellar population properties, the structure, and the environment between massive compact star-forming galaxies (cSFGs) with or without active galactic nucleus (AGN) at 2 < z < 3 in the five 3D-Hubble Space Telescope/CANDELS fields. In a sample of 221 massive cSFGs, we constitute the most complete AGN census so far, identifying 66 AGNs by the X-ray detection, the mid-infrared color criterion, and/or the spectral energy distribution fitting, while the rest (155) are non-AGNs. Further dividing these cSFGs into two redshift bins, i.e., 2 < z < 2.5 and 2.5 ≤ z < 3, we find that in each redshift bin the cSFGs with AGNs have similar distributions of the stellar mass, the specific star formation rate, and the ratio of LIR to LUV to those without AGNs. After having performed a two-dimensional surface brightness modeling for those cSFGs with X-ray-detected AGNs (37) to correct for the influence of the central point-like X-ray AGN on measuring the structural parameters of its host galaxy, we find that in each redshift bin the cSFGs with AGNs have comparable distributions of all concerned structural parameters, i.e., the Sérsic index, the 20%-light radius, the Gini coefficient, and the concentration index, to those without AGNs. With a gradual consumption of available gas and dust, the structure of cSFGs, indicated by the above structural parameters, seem to be slightly more concentrated with decreasing redshift. At 2 < z < 3, the similar environment between cSFGs with and without AGNs suggests that their AGN activities are potentially triggered by internal secular processes, such as gravitational instabilities or/and dynamical friction. The goal of this work is to study the obscuration properties of mid-infrared (mid-IR)-selected active galactic nuclei (AGN). For that purpose, we use Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) sources in the Stripe 82– XMM area to identify mid-IR AGN candidates, applying the Assef et al. criteria. Stripe 82 has optical photometry ≈2 times deeper than any single-epoch Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) region. XMM–Newton observations cover ∼26 deg2. Applying the aforementioned criteria, 1946 IR AGN are selected. |${\sim} 78{{\, \rm per\, cent}}$| have SDSS detection, while 1/3 of them are detected in X-rays, at a flux limit of |$\rm {\sim} 5 \times 10^{-15}\, erg\, s^{-1}\, cm^{-2}$|⁠. Our final sample consists of 507 IR AGN with X-ray detection and optical spectra. Applying a |$r-W2 > 6$| colour criterion, we find that the fraction of optically red AGN drop from 43 per cent for those sources with SDSS detection to |$23{{\, \rm per\, cent}}$| for sources that also have X-ray detection. X-ray spectral fitting reveals 40 (⁠|${\sim} 8{{\, \rm per\, cent}}$|⁠) X-ray absorbed AGN (⁠|$N_\mathrm{ H} > 10^{22}\,{\rm cm}^{-2}$|⁠). Among the X-ray unabsorbed AGN, there are 70 red systems. To further investigate the absorption of these sources, we construct spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for the total IR AGN sample. SED fitting reveals that |${\sim} 20{{\, \rm per\, cent}}$| of the optically red sources have such colours because the galaxy emission is a primary component in the optical part of the SED, even though the AGN emission is not absorbed at these wavelengths. SED fitting also confirms that |$12{{\, \rm per\, cent}}$| of the X-ray unabsorbed IR AGN are optically obscured. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims. In this paper we discuss the radio continuum and X-ray properties of the so-far poorly studied Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) G5.9 + 3.1. Methods. We present the radio spectral energy distribution (SED) of the Galactic SNR G5.9 + 3.1 obtained with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA). Combining these new observations with the surveys at other radio continuum frequencies, we discuss the integrated radio continuum spectrum of this particular remnant. We have also analyzed an archival XMM-Newton observation, which represents the first detection of X-ray emission from this remnant. Results. The SNR SED is very well explained by a simple power-law relation. The synchrotron radio spectral index of G5.9 + 3.1 is estimated to be 0.42 ± 0.03 and the integrated flux density at 1 GHz to be around 2.7 Jy. Furthermore, we propose that the identified point radio source, located centrally inside the SNR shell, is most probably a compact remnant of the supernova explosion. The shell-like X-ray morphology of G5.9 + 3.1 as revealed by XMM-Newton broadly matches the spatial distribution of the radio emission, where the radio-bright eastern and western rims are also readily detected in the X-ray while the radio-weak northern and southern rims are weak or absent in the X-ray. Extracted MOS1+MOS2+PN spectra from the whole SNR as well as the north, east, and west rims of the SNR are fit successfully with an optically thin thermal plasma model in collisional ionization equilibrium with a column density NH ~ 0.80 × 1022 cm−2 and fitted temperatures spanning the range kT ~ 0.14–0.23 keV for all of the regions. The derived electron number densities ne for the whole SNR and the rims are also roughly comparable (ranging from ~0.20f−1∕2 to ~0.40f−1∕2 cm−3, where f is the volume filling factor). We also estimate the swept-up mass of the X-ray emitting plasma associated with G5.9+3.1 to be ~46f−1∕2 M⊙. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a large-scale study of the X-ray properties and near-IR-to-radio spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) detected at 1.1 mm with the AzTEC instrument across a ∼1.2 square degree area of the sky. Combining deep 2–4 Ms Chandra data with Spitzer IRAC/MIPS and Very Large Array data within the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey North (GOODS-N), GOODS-S and COSMOS fields, we find evidence for active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity in ∼14 per cent of 271 AzTEC SMGs, ∼28 per cent considering only the two GOODS fields. Through X-ray spectral modelling and multiwavelength SED fitting using Monte Carlo Markov chain techniques to Siebenmorgen et al. (AGN) and Efstathiou, Rowan-Robinson & Siebenmorgen (starburst) templates, we find that while star formation dominates the IR emission, with star formation rates (SFRs) ∼100–1000 M⊙ yr−1, the X-ray emission for most sources is almost exclusively from obscured AGNs, with column densities in excess of 1023 cm−2. Only for ∼6 per cent of our sources do we find an X-ray-derived SFR consistent with NIR-to-radio SED derived SFRs. Inclusion of the X-ray luminosities as a prior to the NIR-to-radio SED effectively sets the AGN luminosity and SFR, preventing significant contribution from the AGN template. Our SED modelling further shows that the AGN and starburst templates typically lack the required 1.1 mm emission necessary to match observations, arguing for an extended, cool dust component. The cross-correlation function between the full samples of X-ray sources and SMGs in these fields does not indicate a strong correlation between the two populations at large scales, suggesting that SMGs and AGNs do not necessarily trace the same underlying large-scale structure. Combined with the remaining X-ray-dim SMGs, this suggests that sub-mm-bright sources may evolve along multiple tracks, with X-ray-detected SMGs representing transitionary objects between periods of high star formation and AGN activity, while X-ray-faint SMGs represent a brief starburst phase of more normal galaxies. We search for high-redshift (z > 4.5) X-ray active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the deep central (off-axis angle < 5.′7) region of the 7 Ms Chandra Deep Field-South X-ray image. We compile an initial candidate sample from direct X-ray detections. We then probe more deeply in the X-ray data by using preselected samples with high spatial resolution near-infrared (NIR)/mid-infrared (MIR) (Hubble Space Telescope (HST) 1.6 μm and Spitzer 4.5 μm) and submillimeter (ALMA 850 μm) observations. The combination of the NIR/MIR and submillimeter preselections allows us to find X-ray sources with a wide range of dust properties and spectral energy distributions (SEDs). We use the SEDs from the optical to the submillimeter to determine if previous photometric redshifts were plausible. Only five possible z > 5 X-ray AGNs are found, all of which might also lie at lower redshifts. If they do lie at high redshifts, then two are Compton-thick AGNs. Three of the five are ALMA 850 μm sources, including the two Compton-thick AGN candidates. We find that (i) the number density of X-ray AGN drops rapidly at high redshifts, (ii) the detected AGNs do not contribute significantly to photoionization at z > 5, and (iii) the measured X-ray light density over z = 5–10 implies a very low black hole accretion density with very little growth in the black hole mass density in this redshift range. On the basis of various data such as ALMA, JVLA, Chandra, Herschel, and Spitzer, we confirmed that two protostellar candidates in Oph A are bona fide protostars or proto-brown dwarfs (proto-BDs) in extremely early evolutionary stages. Both objects are barely visible across infrared (IR; i.e., near-IR to far-IR) bands. The physical nature of the cores is very similar to that expected in first hydrostatic cores (FHSCs), objects theoretically predicted in the evolutionary phase prior to stellar core formation with gas densities of ∼1011–12 cm−3. This suggests that the evolutionary stage is close to the FHSC formation phase. The two objects are associated with faint X-ray sources, suggesting that they are in very early phase of stellar core formation with magnetic activity. In addition, we found the CO outflow components around both sources, which may originate from the young outflows driven by these sources. The masses of these objects are calculated to be ∼0.01–0.03 M⊙ from the dust continuum emission. These physical properties are consistent with that expected from the numerical model of forming brown dwarfs. These facts (the X-ray detection, CO outflow association, and FHSC-like spectral energy distributions) strongly indicate that the two objects are proto-BDs or will be in the very early phase of protostars, which will evolve to more massive protostars if they gain enough mass from their surroundings. The ages of these two objects are likely to be within ∼103 years after the protostellar core (or second core) formation, taking into account the outflow dynamical times (≲500 years).
