The value of community development (CD) practices is well documented in the health promotion literature; it is a foundational strategy outlined in the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion. Despite the importance of collaborative action with communities to enhance individual and community health and well-being, there exists a major gap between the evidence for CD and the actual extent to which CD is carried out by health organizations. In this paper it is argued that the gap exists because we have failed to turn the evaluative gaze inward—to examine the capacity of health organizations themselves to facilitate CD processes. This study was designed to explicate key elements that contribute to organizational capacity for community development (OC-CD). Twenty-two front-line CD workers and managers responsible for CD initiatives from five regional health authorities in Alberta, Canada, were interviewed. Based on the study findings, a multidimensional model for conceptualizing OC-CD is presented. Central to the model are four inter-related dimensions: (i) organizational commitment to CD, rooted in particular values and beliefs, leadership and shared understanding of CD; (ii) supportive structures and systems, such as job design, flexible planning processes, evaluation mechanisms and collaborative processes; (iii) allocation of resources for CD; and (iv) working relationships and processes that model CD within the health organization. These four dimensions contribute to successful CD practice in numerous ways, but perhaps most importantly by supporting the empowerment and autonomy of the pivotal organizational player in health promotion practice: the front-line worker. Background. Voluntary occupational therapy organizations fill an important role. However, recruitment and retention can be problematic. Little is known about factors influencing occupational therapists to join/maintain membership in professional associations. Purpose. This study investigated factors influencing occupational therapists’ decision to join/remain members of their association. Method. An electronic survey was carried out and data were analyzed using SPSS software and manual categorization of open-ended comments. Findings. Two hundred and fifty-four therapists responded. Generation of new ideas, opportunities for professional development, self-improvement, maintenance of standards, improvement of the profession, and discounts on equipment/educational opportunities were significant factors in deciding to join the organization. The factors perceived as priorities varied in relation to participants’ year of graduation. Implications. More-customized strategies, reflecting priorities that vary during a therapist’s career path, may need to be employed to best address recruitment and retention across the range of therapists’ needs and goals. The article focuses on the program for the annual meeting of the Phycological Society of America. The meeting will be held at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, in Canada, from June 20-24, 1971. The chairmen of the program will be Harold C. Bold and Louis Druehl. All sessions of the program at which contributed papers, lectures and the symposium are presented are scheduled as joint sessions of the Phycological Society of America, the Phycological Section of the Canadian Botanical Association and the Phycological Section of the Botanical Society of America.

Information about the roundtable discussion of the North American Research Conference on Complementary and Integrative Medicine held on May 24 to 27, 2006 in Edmonton, Alberta is presented. Questions on the most important methodologic issues facing the whole system research; any unique methodological issues arise; and how to educate the biomedical community were raised. These questions were then responded by panel members namely: Dr. George T. Lewith, Dr. Cheryl Ritenbaugh, and Dr. Mikel Aickin.
