Nostalgia has historically been negatively characterised by desire to reconnect with an idealised past lost to the ‘destructive’ forces of modernity, but studies across the social sciences have recently sought to re-appraise the creative and embodied significance of individuals’ recollections. This paper contributes to this developing debate by empirically exploring the value of individual remembering in relation to the urban material landscape. First, drawing on recently collected go-along data from long-term residents of two UK cities, Birmingham and Coventry, it is argued that nostalgia could be considered a more progressive force in urban life, especially amongst residents in cities that have undergone and are undergoing physical change as a consequence of ‘official’ attempts to reconstruct, regenerate and/or repackage particular urban spaces; developing a richer understanding of the interplay between official and unofficial nostalgias can better inform planning decisions that are more likely to be socially acceptable and supported by local communities. Second, though there are clear advantages of developing a fuller theoretical and methodological consideration of urban nostalgia, this paper then uses go-along data to demonstrate that much remains to be learnt from exploring how the material urban environment can encourage and/or limit individual efforts to keep potentially distressing aspects of their past concealed. As Europe's current economic crisis continues many households are developing new coping strategies in response to the pressures of everyday life. This paper explores such practices within Birmingham's Castle Vale housing estate, drawing on the increasing engagement within the social sciences with notions of resilience. This concept, originating from engineering, psychology, and disaster management, is increasingly used in urban and economic geography, and is becoming influential on state policy. This paper furthers its current usages by proposing the concept of 'persistent resilience', whereby households, and their networks, develop responses not just to 'shocks', but also to more long-term processes, such as the changing nature of employment and/or responses to constantly altering state policies. This form of resilience has significant policy relevance, as it can be seen, albeit under different names, at the heart of the British government's 'Big Society' project, within which communities are to be empowered to steer their development while 'big government' withdraws. This paper argues, however, that there is an inherent tension within such assumptions of community-led development, as they do not consider the spaces in which it takes place. As the paper demonstrates, 'persistent resilience' is often formed in the semiformal/informal spaces of everyday life, which, in many cases, will be destroyed by cuts to government funding to communities. This paper draws on ethnographic research carried out in Birmingham, UK – a city significant for its sizeable Muslim population and its iconic role in the history of minority ethnic settlement in Britain – to consider how associations of place and ethnicity work in different ways to inform ideas about ‘Muslim community’ in twenty-first-century Britain. The paper charts happenings around a local event in an area of majority Asian settlement and how representations of the area as a place of Muslim community were used to implicate it in the ‘war on terror’. The paper goes on to show how this sensibility is disrupted by Muslims themselves through alternative engagements with space and ethnicity. The paper argues that these offer a ground for making Muslim community in ways that actively engage with histories and patterns of ethnic settlement in the city rather than being determined by them. As Erin O’Connor recently noted, “Asiatic cholera exposed the frailties of England’s urban industrial structure,” and it provided the most serious test of the old Poor Law system in Birmingham. This paper intends to explore the response of the medical, political, and religious authorities of Birmingham to the outbreak of cholera in 1832 as well as the popular reaction to this response. It also seeks to explain why, in Asa Briggs’ words, “Birmingham was almost untouched . . . in the cholera outbreak of 1832 (when there were only twenty-one deaths)” by analyzing the geography, social and political structures of the town, and the medical and moral pathology of the disease. By using the minutes of the Birmingham overseers and guardians of the poor, together with contemporary newspaper reports, the paper seeks to uncover the dramatic and entirely unexpected course of events in Birmingham. It offers an analysis of the city’s response to the disease that challenges interpretations of the unreformed Poor Law as passive and unsympathetic and the unincorporated local authorities as chaotic and corrupt. The episode also sheds light on competing cultural attitudes toward death and disease among the communities that made up early nineteenth-century Birmingham. The only areas where the authorities’ actions were significantly interfered with were those where the poorest (including the Irish) lived. Here, swift removal of corpses clashed with traditional funeral practices and the widespread fear of “burking” by anatomists provoked serious disturbances. The paper concludes that Birmingham was spared the pandemic by the happy combination of location (far from the sea in the pre-railway age), infrastructure (with deep artesian wells supplying most drinking water, in contrast to the reliance on streams and rivers elsewhere in Britain) and the uniquely well-organized response to the epidemic by the overseers and guardians of the poor, the town’s medical practitioners, and the Board of Health, chaired by Samuel Galton. The paper concludes that it was to the country’s detriment that the city’s effective response to the disease was largely overlooked at the time and that it took until 1854 when Jon Snow was able to compare those drinking contaminated and uncontaminated water and draw the conclusions that led to the provision of an effective response to the problem of cholera in the cities of Britain. The population complexity associated with superdiversity brings a wide range of challenges for social welfare providers. Commentators have outlined concerns about the ability of service providers to meet the welfare needs of ever diversifying populations and point to potential problems in identifying the nature of need in rapidly changing superdiverse neighbourhoods as conventional approaches to consultation based around ethnicity become practically impossible. Using data collected in the West Midlands, which explored maternity service needs from the perspectives of new migrants and maternity professionals, some key barriers to effective welfare delivery in superdiverse areas are explored. The paper outlines the emergence of two challenges important in shaping new migrant access to maternity care in an era of superdiversity – novelty and newness – and proposes further research to examine the extent to which these challenges are faced in other social welfare services. Rising demand for early help services is currently taking place against a backdrop of closing or reduced services and shrinking public authority budgets across England. Complicating matters is the wide variety of service orientations and differences in assessments offered to vulnerable families. This can be confusing for them. Moreover, this is an inefficient approach to providing help. This article presents a methodology of early help practice with families, designed to ease any service orientation problems, while promoting a more uniformed approach to early help practice in Birmingham, England. This article is concerned with the wide variety of tools and approaches in early help practice and is critical to how risk and need exploration operates because practitioner anxiety about working with risk potentially fuels an escalation of referrals through to statutory services. To help build practitioner confidence about working with need and risk, a practice framework based on signs of safety has been developed for Birmingham’s early help services, replacing over 80 pre-existing assessment tools. Rex and Moore's Race, Community and Conflict: A Study of Sparkbrook has the status of a modern sociological classic. The argument presented here is that this can be attributed in part to its methodological underpinnings. The use of a combination of methods to collect material on the lives of Sparkbrook residents in the 1960s allowed a more rounded account to be developed than would have been possible had only the originally planned survey been undertaken. The resultant study is by no means perfect, but its underlying ambition and the determination with which the project was seen through have served to inspire subsequent generations of researchers. In this article, the author compares the way in which anti-(ethnic) discrimination policies regarding access to social housing are implemented on the ground in Britain and France through case studies in Birmingham and Marseilles. Beyond sharp differences in the conceptions and "philosophies" of antidiscrimination policies in those two national "models" (a differentialist conception in Britain versus a universalist conception in France), the author shows the limits of these policies on the ground in both cases. In particular, the author shows how (a) the way in which ethnic discrimination is locally constructed as a public issue and (b) the constraints and contradictions faced by local institutions and street-level bureaucrats dealing with social housing on a day-to-day basis contribute to their failure. The 'Floodgate Street area' was a notorious slum district in the city of Birmingham in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This article presents a case study, drawing on the rich archival sources available for this area, to examine the language that local authority and voluntary workers used to describe the local area, and their engagement with local children in terms of welfare provision and punitive measures. The work of teachers at Floodgate Street School is located within a local discourse of urban poverty, and within local attempts to improve conditions for the inhabitants of slum areas. Local activities and discussions are contextualised within broader debates concerning slums and patterns of welfare. This article places schools at the centre of a historiography of urban poverty and welfare from which education is largely absent.
