Copper oxide (CuO) nanostructures have gained significance due to their chemical and physical properties that find applications in sensing, electronics and minimizing solar background count in spaceborne plasma instruments. In this work, a wet-chemical route has been utilized to synthesize nanostructured CuO coating on aluminum alloy substrates. The coating was thoroughly characterized using x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Raman spectroscopy, glow-discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES), UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometer and four probe resistance methods. XRD results showed diffraction peaks corresponding to CuO while SEM micrograph depicted a floral-like nanostructure. Raman spectrum revealed phonon vibrational modes corresponding to CuO. The average solar absorptance of CuO nanostructure was 96% in the wavelength range of 0.25-2.5 μm. A comparison of the UV-induced photoelectron counts between the bare substrate and coated samples showed reduction by a factor of 107 due to the presence of CuO nanostructures. The CuO nanostructures also exhibited excellent electrical conductivity and low-degassing properties. The present work explores the adaptive behavior of well-known ureolytic bacterial strain namely Sporosarcina pasteurii for microbial-induced calcite precipitation (MICP) under saline environment. MICP activity was observed up to 10% NaCl supplementation and confirmed by several characterization techniques viz. scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The urease activity did not show appreciable decline till 5% NaCl supplementation but beyond that drastic reduction was observed though MICP process continued. These results indicated a shift in the biological pathway for MICP process at higher salt concentrations. This was confirmed by estimation of ammonium ion concentration which was approximately 4 µg/ml with 10% NaCl supplementation as compared to 8.5 µg/ml at 0% NaCl supplementation. To provide an insight on the nature of protein expressed, combination of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (nano-LC-MS) approaches along with an exponentially modified protein abundance index (emPAI) methodology were explored. The findings suggest the presence of significant number of osmoregulatory proteins substantiating halophilic adaptation of S. pasteurii and bicarbonate transport mediated precipitation at higher levels of salinity. Further, co-precipitation of CaCl2 and MgSO4 was also confirmed with SEM and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) mapping under higher saline environment thus substantiating the efficacy of the strain. Vanadium oxide films, deposited on aluminium (Al), titanium (Ti) and tantalum (Ta) metal substrates by pulsed RF magnetron sputtering at a working pressure of 1.5 x10−2 mbar at room temperature are found to display mixed crystalline vanadium oxide phases viz., VO2, V2O3, V2O5. The films have been characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and their thermo-optical and electrical properties have been investigated. Abstract: Microstructural, corrosion and nanomechanical behaviour of micro arc oxidised (MAO) coating grown on magnesium AZ31B alloy was evaluated. Microstructural characterization of the coating was carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) followed by image analysis and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX). Linear polarization technique was used to evaluate the corrosion behaviour of the MAO coating. Further, nanoindentation was employed to evaluate nanohardness and Young’s modulus of the MAO coating. The characteristic values of both the nanohardness and the Young’s modulus were calculated through the application of the Weibull statistics. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The motivation behind this study was the urge to understand how the high strain rate flyer plate impact affects the nanohardness of alumina ceramics. Therefore, the load controlled nanoindentation experiments were conducted with a Berkovich indenter on an as received coarse grain (~10μm), high density (~3.98g.cm3) alumina and the shock recovered tiny fragments of the same alumina. The shocked alumina fragments were obtained from an earlier flyer plate shock impact study in a two stage gas gun. The nanohardness of the as received alumina was much higher than that of the shocked alumina. The shocked alumina showed a relatively much stronger indentation size effect (ISE) while the as received alumina exhibited a mild ISE. A new explanation was given for the presence of the relatively strong ISE in the shock recovered alumina. Additional characterizations such as scanning electron microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and analysis of the experimental load depth data were utilized for this purpose. Finally, a new, qualitative model was proposed to provide a rational picture of the nanoindentation responses of the as received and shocked alumina ceramics. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Advanced applications of glass span the range from biomedical technology to special optical lenses to mobile phones and computers. Such advanced applications demand high-precision machining, which is like multiple single scratches occurring simultaneously on the glass surface. However, in spite of the wealth of literature on scratch deformation behavior of glass there is no significant information available on whether the nanomechanical properties are affected inside the scratch grooves. Therefore, nanoindentation experiments were deliberately conducted at a fixed load of 100 mN through the scratch grooves made at various applied normal loads (5-15 N) at a constant speed of 200 μm s on polished soda-lime-silica (SLS) glass slides. The results showed that depending upon the applied normal load used to generate the scratch grooves, the nanohardness and Young's modulus inside the scratch grooves decreased by about ∼30-60% from the corresponding data of the undamaged SLS glass due to the presence of sub-surface shear deformation and microcracking as observed by optical, scanning and field emission scanning electron microscopy. Many advanced applications of glass demand fabrication of engineering parts of utmost dimensional precision which require very accurate grinding and polishing that involves controlled removal of glass. Despite the wealth of literature, however; the mechanism of material removal in glass grinding and polishing is still far from well understood. For instance, it is not known at all to what extent the mechanical properties are compromised inside a scratch groove so as to optimize the machining parameters. Therefore, to develop better understanding about the mechanism of material removal, a series of combined nanoindentation and single pass scratch experiments were conducted on a commercially available soda-lime-silica glass as a function of various normal loads (2-20 N) and scratch speeds (0.1-1 mm/s). It was found that the nanohardness and Young's modulus at the local microstructural length scale inside the scratch groove could decrease quite dramatically (~30% to 70%) depending on the combination of load and scratching speed. Further, the tribological properties, the severity and the spatial density of damage evolution were sensitive to the normal loads, scratching speeds, and tensile stresses. Extensive scanning electron microscopy leads to interesting observations on material removal mechanisms. To understand how high-strain rate, flyer-plate impact affects the nanohardness of a coarse (~10 μm) grain, high-density (~3.978 gm cc) alumina, load controlled nanoindentation experiments were conducted with a Berkovich indenter on as-sintered disks and shock-recovered alumina fragments obtained from an earlier flyer-plate shock impact study. The nanohardness of the shock-recovered alumina was much lower than that of the as-sintered alumina. The indentation size effect was severe in the shock-recovered alumina but only mild in the as-sintered alumina. Extensive additional characterization by field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and analysis of the experimental load depth data were used to provide a new explanation for the presence of strong indentation size effect in the shock-recovered alumina. Finally, a qualitative model was proposed to provide a rationale for the whole scenario of nanoindentation responses in the as-sintered and shock-recovered alumina ceramics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the fracture toughness ( K) measured by nanoindentation technique at five different loads in the range of 100-1000 mN on the cross section of a highly porous microplasma-sprayed hydroxyapatite (MIPS-HAP) coating. The unique advantage of this technique was that it could evaluate K at a scale comparable with that of the local microstructure of the coating. In spite of high porosity (∼11 vol%), the coating showed a toughness (∼0.6 MPa m) comparable to typical literature data (∼0.5 MPa m) on dense HAP coating. To understand how hardness, the key design parameter for applications of brittle solids such as glass concerning contact deformation, is affected by loading rate variation, nanoindentation with a Berkovich tip was used to measure the nanohardness of a 330- μm-thick soda-lime-silica glass as a function of loading rate (1 to 1000 mN·s−1). The results showed for the very first time that, with variations in the loading rate, there was a 6 to 9 pct increase in the nanohardness of glass up to a threshold loading rate (TLR), whereafter it did not appreciably increase with further increase in loading rate. Further, the nanohardness data showed an indentation size effect (ISE) that obeyed the Meyer’s law. These observations were explained in terms of a strong shear stress component developed just beneath the nanoindenter and the related shear-induced deformation processes at local microstructural scale weak links. The significant or insignificant presence of shear-induced serrations in load depth plots and corresponding scanning electron microscopic evidence of a strong or mild presence of shear deformation bands in and around the nanoindentation cavity supported such a rationalization. Microplasma sprayed (MIPS) HAP coatings on SS316L substrates were characterized by x-ray diffraction, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), atomic force microscopy and image analysis. The coating showed a high degree of crystallinity ~92%, a high porosity level of 20 vol.% and a moderate bonding strength of about 13 MPa. The displacement controlled three-point bend tests and associated results of optical microscopy indicated that crack deflection, crack branching, and also local crack bridging occurred during crack propagation in the coating. The nano-hardness ( H) and Young’s modulus ( E) of the MIPS-HAP coatings as measured by nanoindentation technique were about 6 and 92 GPa, respectively. The fracture toughness ( Kic) of the coating was ~0.6 MPa·m0.5. Present study reports the detailed nanomechanical and corrosion behaviours of crystalline and amorphous plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) coatings developed on Aluminium alloy-6061. The concentration of sodium silicate in the electrolyte is tailored to achieve crystalline and amorphous natures of the PEO coatings. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and nanoprofilometry techniques are utilized to investigate microstructural and morphological properties of the PEO coatings. XRD studies confirmed that crystalline ceramic phases are obtained at lower silicate concentration while amorphous nature occurred for comparatively higher concentration of silicate in the electrolyte. Nanoindentation technique is utilized to study the mechanical properties such as hardness (H) and Young's modulus (E) of the PEO coatings. The scatter of the data is treated with well-established Weibull statistical method. Finally, in depth corrosion behaviour of the coatings are investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization techniques. Amorphous coatings exhibited superior mechanical properties compared to the crystalline coatings. This is possibly linked with the presence of aluminosilicate phases and difference in silicon content in the coatings. However, as expected crystalline PEO coatings offer better corrosion resistance than the amorphous coatings and this behaviour is explained in terms of porosity contents of the coatings. Abstract: Alumina thin films were deposited on titanium (Ti) and fused quartz by both direct and reactive pulsed rf magnetron sputtering techniques. X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy were utilized to study the phases and surface morphology of the films. The as-deposited alumina thin films were amorphous. However, after annealing at 500°C in vacuum, the crystalline peaks corresponding to the Theta (θ), Delta (δ) and Chi (χ) alumina phases were obtained. The optical transmittance and reflectance as well as IR emittance data were also evaluated for the thin films. The transmittance, e.g., (~90%) of the bare quartz substrate was not changed even when the alumina thin films were deposited for an hour. However, further increase in deposition time (e.g., 7h) of the alumina thin films showed only a marginal decrease (e.g., ~5%) in average transmittance of the bare quartz substrate. The direct and indirect optical band gaps and extinction coefficient of the alumina films were estimated from the transmittance spectra. The IR emittance of the Ti substrate (e.g., ~16%) was almost constant after depositing alumina thin films for an hour. Further increase in deposition time showed only a marginal increase (e.g., ~9%) in IR emittance value. Therefore, it is proposed that the alumina films developed in the present work can act as a protective cover for the Ti substrate while retaining the thermo-optical properties of the same. The nanohardness and Young׳s modulus of the alumina thin films were evaluated by the novel nanoindentation technique. The nanohardness was measured as ~6GPa. Further, Young׳s modulus was evaluated as ~116GPa. The magnitudes of the nanomechanical properties of the thin films were a little smaller than those reported in the literature.
