Immobilized microalgae have great potential on the nutrient removal during wastewater treatment. However, their applications are challenged by how to cost-effectively maintain and preserve large number of viable and active microalgal cells. In this study, the cells of Chlorella sacchrarophila were immobilized in the agar containing with algal nutrient, encapsulated in a transparent package and preserved at room temperature. After the preservation for 200 days, microalgal cells with viability of 47-52% were maintained and could be quickly revived after the cultivation in fresh algal medium. Based on the agar-immobilized microalgae, the NH 4 + -N and PO 4 3- -P were efficiently removed from batch and continuous cultures, with the highest removal efficiencies ranging from 96% to 99% were observed. Even being recycled for eight times, the agar-immobilized microalgae were still able to remove 94% of NH 4 + -N and 66% of PO 4 3- -P. Moreover, more than 60% of the nutrient removal efficiency was determined even the agar-immobilized microalgae being preserved for 120 days at room temperature. Anthropogenic activities have increased the amount of urban wastewater discharged into natural aquatic reservoirs containing a high amount of nutrients such as phosphorus (Pi and PO 4 - 3 ), nitrogen (NH 3 and NO 3 - ) and organic contaminants. Most of the urban wastewater in Mexico do not receive any treatment to remove nutrients. Several studies have reported that an alternative to reduce those contaminants is using consortiums of microalgae and endogenous bacteria. In this research, a genome-scale biochemical reaction network is reconstructed for the co-culture between the microalga Chlorella vulgaris and the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa . Metabolic Pathway Analysis (MPA), is applied to understand the metabolic capabilities of the co-culture and to elucidate the best conditions in removing nutrients. Theoretical yields for phosphorus removal under photoheterotrophic conditions are calculated, determining their values as 0.042 mmol of PO 4 - 3 per g DW of C. vulgaris , 19.43 mmol of phosphorus (Pi) per g DW of C. vulgaris and 4.90 mmol of phosphorus (Pi) per g DW of P. aeruginosa . Similarly, according to the genome-scale biochemical reaction network the theoretical yields for nitrogen removal are 10.3 mmol of NH 3 per g DW of P. aeruginosa and 7.19 mmol of NO 3 - per g DW of C. vulgaris . Thus, this research proves the metabolic capacity of these microorganisms in removing nutrients and their theoretical yields are calculated.

This work investigated the biological activities and nitrogen and phosphorus removal during the anabaena flos-aquae biofilm growth on the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) carriers, in different nutrient form mediums. The study showed that the production of dehydrogenase activity (DHA) and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) can reach 40.4 g/(h·m 2 ) and 115 × 10 -2  g/m 2 in an 11-day period, respectively, indicating that the anabaena flos-aquae biofilm had high biological activities. The results showed that the nitrogen and phosphorus removal reached 94.9 and 96.8%, respectively, in the ammonium form nitrogen group; while 97.7% of phosphorus were removed in the orthophosphate form phosphorous group. A comparison study was conducted and results showed that the present anabaena flos-aquae based biofilm provided a better removal of nitrogen and phosphorus than the other microalgae biofilms., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. In this study, surfactant modified zeolite-clinoptilolite (SMZ) by CPB (cetylpyridinium bromide) was used for simultaneous removal of ammonium, nitrate and phosphate in synthetic wastewater, and the sorption properties of SMZ were determined and compared with natural zeolite. Results showed that natural clinoptilolite had good affinity for ammonium (8.940 mg/g), but not for nitrate (0.427 mg/g) and phosphate (0.801 mg/g). With the increase of surfactant loading from 5 g/L to 40 g/L, the sorption capacity for nitrate increased from 0.462 mg/g to 4.661 mg/g. when the surfactant loading is 40 g/L, the SMZ has a phosphate adsorption capacity of 2.119 mg/g. The SMZ had a significant enhancement on nitrate and phosphate sorption, could simultaneously remove ammonium, nitrate and phosphate at specific conditions, with removal efficiency up to 85.2%, 83.1% and 56.7%, respectively. Orthogonal experiments showed that ammonium concentration was the most important factor for ammonium sorption on SMZ. Surfactant loading was the major factor for nitrate and phosphate sorption. With the increase of surfactant loading from 5 g/L to 40 g/L, the sorption capacity for nitrate increased from 0.462 mg/g to 4.661 mg/g. When the surfactant loading is 40 g/L, the SMZ has the best phosphate adsorption capacity 2.119 mg/g. Samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). Semi-empirical quantum mechanics molecular simulation indicated that electrostatic attraction existed between CPB and dihydrogen phosphate ion. Results indicate that SMZs might have great potential of removing cations and anions simultaneously in the aquatic environment, which is good for eutrophication control and nutrients removal.

To provide a theoretical basis for alpine source lake protection, ten samples were taken from each lake annually from 2012 to 2015. Each year, the various species of nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients were measured. The average contents of nitrate nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, total phosphorus, and total nitrogen in the four lakes are 0.195-0.0 mg/L, 0.038-0.143 mg/L, 0.004-0.168 mg/L, 0.006-0.740 mg/L, and 0.050-0.547 mg/L, respectively. The total phosphorus contents in Eling Lake, Longbao Lake and Sea Star were higher than Class I water quality standards, and the total nitrogen contents in Eling Lake, Sea Star and Zhaling Lake were higher than Class I water quality standards as well. The concentration contour maps of the nitrate nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, total phosphorus and total nitrogen showed that the indicators of the four lakes in the east, the west, and the center of the lake did not have the same trend. From 2012 to 2015, each of the measured nutrients showed a rising trend year by year. The four lakes are polluted by both endogenous and exogenous pollution, and it is necessary to limit the exogenous pollution and protect the alpine lakes immediately.

In this investigation, a laboratory-scale enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) process was operated under controlled conditions to study the impact of varying the influent ratio of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) and total phosphorus (TP), and the consequential biochemical reactions on oxygen transfer parameters. The data showed that the experiment with high influent phosphorus relative to nitrogen (COD/TP = 51 and TKN/TP = 3.1) achieved higher alpha and oxygen transfer efficiency (OTE(f)). On the other hand, the experiment with high influent nitrogen relative to phosphorus (TKN/TP = 14.7 and COD/TP = 129) resulted in approximately 50% reduction in alpha and OTE(f) under similar organic loading. This suggested that the intracellular carbon storage and the enhanced biological P removal phenomenon associated with the phosphorus-accumulating organisms (PAOs) had a positive influence on OTE(f) in the high phosphorus experiment compared to an active population of nitrifying and denitrifying organisms in the high nitrogen experiment. The intracellular carbon storage by the glycogen-accumulating organisms also appeared to have had a positive effect on oxygen transfer efficiency, although to a lesser extent in comparison to the PAOs. It was also found that oxygen uptake rate (OUR) was not a good indicator of the measured alpha and OTE(f), because it was a combined effect of several biochemical reactions, each having a varying degree of influence. It is difficult to underestimate the crucial role of flocs in mass transfer of oxygen, because microorganisms associated with flocs carry out the biochemical reactions. It seems that the combination of influent characteristics and biochemical reactions in each experiment produced a unique biomass quality (determined by the biomass N to P ratio), ultimately affecting the mass transfer of oxygen. A theoretical explanation for the observed oxygen transfer efficiency under the process conditions is also proposed in this article.
