Glacial geologic studies in the Southern Hemisphere (SH) mid-latitudes (40-54°S) indicate renewed glacial activity in southern South America (Patagonia) and New Zealand's (NZ) South Island starting at ∼7 kyr, the so-called neoglaciation. Available data indicate that neoglacial advances in these regions occurred during a rising trend in atmospheric CO and CH concentrations, lower-than-present but increasing summer insolation and seasonality contrasts. In this paper we examine the climatological context in which neoglaciations occurred through analysis of the complete Paleoclimate Modelling Inter-comparison Project (PMIP2) database of simulations at 6 kyr for the SH. We observe that the amplitude of the annual insolation cycle in the SH did not change significantly at 6 kyr compared to the pre-industrial values, the largest difference occurring in autumn (MAM, negative anomalies) and spring (SON, positive anomalies). The simulated changes in temperatures over the SH respond to the insolation changes, with a 1-2 month delay over the oceans. This results in a reduced amplitude of the annual cycle of temperature and precipitation over most continental regions, except over Patagonia and NZ, that show a slight increase. In contrast, large-scale circulation features, such as the low and upper level winds and the subtropical anticyclones show an amplified annual cycle, as a direct response to the increased/decreased insolation during the transitional seasons SON/MAM. In the annual mean, there is a small but consistent equatorward shift of the latitude of maximum wind speed of 1-3° over the entire SH, which results in a small increase of wind speed over the South Pacific and Atlantic Oceans north of ∼50°S and a widespread decline south of 50°S. PMIP2 simulations for 6 kyr, indicate that in the annual mean, the SH mid-latitudes were colder, wetter and with stronger winds north of about 50°S. These conditions are consistent with the observed neoglacial advances in the region, as well as with terrestrial paleoclimate records from Patagonia that indicate cooling and a multi-millennial rising trend in Southern Westerly Wind intensity starting at ∼7.8 kyr. This contribution is part of a more extensive assessment of the effects of air pollution in urban environments in Patagonia (Argentina) through its effects on the lichen flora. Different methodologies were applied. This paper presents calculations of the Index of Atmospheric Purity (IAP) for urban contaminated (Bariloche city) and periurban uncontaminated environments, calculated at sites for which data were available on the elemental composition of contaminating elements. The IAP results obtained were correlated with the elemental composition of lichen thalli. Principal Component Analysis and Cluster Analysis were performed to determine data partitioning using Ward's method. The results yielded four clusters: three of them correspond to thalli and IAP values from urban areas, where the most important factors affecting the lichen flora have been identified as their proximity to medium to high traffic density or petrol stations. Thalli from periurban uncontaminated environments form an independent cluster, characterized by lower concentrations of contaminating elements and higher IAP values. The results obtained allow IAP to be related to atmospheric conditions in these human settlements and evaluation of the ecological effects of these settlements on the natural environment by comparison with unaltered surrounding environments. Patagonia features the most extensive glaciers of the Southern Hemisphere, excluding Antarctica, and a vast inventory of glacial landforms, so it is thought to have played a key role in (paleo)glacier studies since the late 19th century. However, no systematic attempts to characterize the specific research trends and the scientific community focused on Patagonian cryosphere have been conducted so far. To fill this gap, we analyzed the metadata associated to 305 articles compiled from the Web of Science database following a bibliometric approach covering the period between 1976 and 2020. Our results point to an irregular but net increase on the number of contributions on Patagonian (paleo)glaciers. Mass balance analyses based on satellite data of present-day glaciers and the reconstruction of past glacier activity by dating glacial landforms formed during the Last Glacial Termination, were the most addressed topics during the analyzed period. Patagonian (paleo)glacier studies are mostly published in generic Earth Sciences publications, followed by Quaternary and glaciological journals. Most of the studies were led by scientists from the United Kingdom, followed by Chile, Argentina and United States. In terms of collaborations, these studies can be divided into two main clusters, one composed by researchers from United States, Chile and Argentina institutions, and another mostly composed by British researchers. So far, the most prolific authors are nearly equally distributed in nationality, yet gender inclusion and international collaborations are still caveats that must be solved. Even though our query on the Web of Science missed highly influential (so-called) grey literature, such as local scientific journals and technical reports, the reviewed scientific literature unambiguously indicates that Patagonia is a privileged location for (paleo)glaciers studies worldwide and that it will continue offering vast opportunities to tackle critical questions related to global cryosphere and past-to-present climate changes. • Patagonia is a privilege site for studying present and past glacier dynamics and the evolution of climate changes at hemispheric and global scale. • Glacier dynamics during the 20th century and and the Last Glacial Termination are the most common topics addressed in past decades in the WOS. • Patagonian (paleo)glacier studies has contributed to the development or improvement of diverse analytical techniques. • United Kingdom, United States, Chile and Argentina produced the largest number of WOS-listed papers on (paleo)glaciers in past decades. • The related scientific community is fairly heterogeneous. Abstract: Argentina is a special place to study Late Palaeozoic life and environmental change because of the excellent exposures of Late Palaeozoic sedimentary sequences. In particular, Patagonia has an almost continuous Late Palaeozoic succession containing well-preserved faunal assemblages characterized by both strong endemism and distinctive palaeobiogeographic links to Australia and northeast Asia. In this contribution an overview of the current knowledge of the invertebrate faunas of Patagonia and their biostratigraphic and palaeobiogeographic significance are presented, along with comments on the future prospects of research in the light of new findings. The Late Palaeozoic outcrops in central-western Patagonia belong to the Tepuel–Genoa Basin (Chubut province, Argentina), then located in southwestern Gondwana during the Late Palaezoic. In this basin the succession is >6000m thick, and constitutes a continuous and complete succession from the Lower Carboniferous to lower Permian. As such, it has the potential to serve as an important reference section for regional and intercontinental correlations. The marine Late Palaeozoic of Patagonia has yielded abundant and well-preserved representatives of most invertebrate groups: brachiopods, bivalves, gastropods, cephalopods, hyolithids, pelmatozoans, ostracods and cnidarians. Recently, studies of the Patagonian faunas have resulted in different opinions on the ages of the faunas. Biostratigraphic correlation is complex due to strong faunal provincialism. For this reason, there are several hypotheses concerning the biostratigraphic zonation in the basin. Since 1920, when studies of Late Palaeozoic strata in Patagonia were first carried out, numerous papers on stratigraphic, palaeogeographic and taxonomic subjects have been published, but our knowledge of Carboniferous–Permian fossils from the Tepuel–Genoa Basin is still incomplete. At present, we are attempting to integrate and calibrate the different faunal associations with a view to achieving a unified biostratigraphic biozonation scheme and hence a much improved understanding of the palaeobiogeographic relationship of Patagonian faunas with those from western Argentina and other continents. Currently, detailed stratigraphic and palaeontological research is being done in the type section of the Tepuel–Genoa Basin. The aim of our studies is to integrate all partial sequences exposed throughout the basin and to propose a biostratigraphic chart based on key invertebrate taxa. Abstract: The average age at sexual maturity (ASM) is an important parameter for evaluating the reproductive potential or status of a population. South American sea lions, Otaria flavescens in Patagonia (Argentina) were exploited and reduced to less than 10% of pre-exploitation numbers. At present, the population is recovering at a rate of 6%. In this paper, we studied growth and age at sexual maturity of South American sea lions in the south-western south Atlantic by examining 219 individuals (females and males) collected between 1989-2008. Individuals were aged by counting growth layer groups in tooth sections, standard body length was measured and male and female reproductive organs were examined macroscopically and histologically to establish individual sexual maturity. Maximum recorded length for males and females was 264cm and 200cm, respectively, and maximum ages 19 and 21 yrs. ASM defined as the age where 50% of females are mature, was estimated at 4.8±0.5 years old, corresponding to a mean SL of 147cm, about 81% of their asymptotic length. First observed ovulation occurred during the 4th year, first birth may occur between 4 and 5 years old. Males physiologically mature between 4-6 years, but the size of the testes shows that all males became sexually mature by the age of 9 years when they reach a mean SL of 212cm, about 86% of their asymptotic body length. The present information on ASM and growth of O. flavescens will improve the development of population dynamics models, to investigate the impact of recovering sea lions populations on its marine environment, as well as its trophic interactions with commercial fisheries. Riverine and wind-borne materials transferred from Patagonia to the SW Atlantic exhibit a homogeneous rare earth element (REE) signature. They match well with the REE composition of Recent tephra from the Hudson volcano, and hence this implies a dominance of material supplied by this source and other similar Andean volcanoes. Due to the trapping effect of proglacial and reservoir lakes, the larger Patagonian rivers deliver to the ocean a suspended load with a slightly modified Andean signature, that shows a REE composition depleted in heavy REEs. In this paper we redefine Patagonia as a source of sediments, which is in contrast with other sources located in southern South America. Quaternary sediments deposited in the northern and, to a lesser extent, in the southern Scotia Sea, and most of the dust in ice cores of east Antarctica have REE compositions very similar to the loess from Buenos Aires Province and to Patagonian eolian dust. However, we rule out Buenos Aires province as a Holocene major source of sediments. Similarly to Buenos Aires loess (a proximal facies), it is likely that the REE compositions of most sediment cores of the Scotia Sea and Antarctica reflect a distal transport of dust with an admixed composition from two main sources: a major contribution from Patagonia, and a minor proportion from source areas containing sediments with a clear upper crustal signature (e.g., western Argentina) or from Bolivia’s Altiplano. The article discusses a study on the effects of volcanic-related natural sedimentation on Trichoptera or caddisfly species found in Chubut province, Argentina. The researchers proposed that the mobility and swimming abilities of Trichoptera enabled their resistance to sediment deposition caused by the eruption of the Chaitén volcano. Species tolerance to sedimentation was found to be associated with traits such as respiration mode, filter-feeding habits, and rounded body shape.

In Northern Patagonia, the long-term vegetation–climate relationships that gave shape to southern South American forests have been the subject of extensive investigations in the Andean regions of Argentina and Chile for about a century. The Río Manso Superior originates in one of the tongues of the Cerro Tronador Glacier, near the international border, discharging into the Pacific Ocean after feeding present Lago Mascardi and flowing east to west on a mountain landscape. Ongoing pollen studies in this watershed provide us with a modern analogue to better understand the vegetation history of the region. A pollen record from a 15 m long sediment core retrieved from Lago Mascardi (41°08°S, 71°34°W) contains continuous evidence of vegetation changes in the Río Manso watershed extending back to the last deglaciation. High Andean steppe vegetation with forest patches, and extended waterlogged areas gave place to a forest, probably deciduous, during the Lateglacial–Holocene transition. A forest diversification took place during the climate amelioration that encompassed the deglaciation whilst the vegetation became more open before the onset of the Huelmo-Mascardi cold reversal. A mixed Nothofagus-Austrocedrus forest expanded during the middle Holocene. This forest became denser under the higher climate variability registered in the region during the late Holocene as shown by independent published data. Statistical analyses of modern pollen samples along an altitudinal transect from low Nothofagus forest and shrubland to high Andean semi-desert support this interpretation. We describe fossil fruits collected from outcrops of the Salamanca Fm. (Paleocene, Danian, 63.3-61.9 Ma) at the Estancia Las Violetas locality, Chubut, Argentina that show affinities with members of the Subtribe Attaleinae, Tribe Cocoseae, Subfamily Arecoideae within the Arecaceae. The fossils are preserved as permineralizations, and were examined by longitudinal, tangential and cross-sections, as well as by the application of Computed Tomography Scanning technology (CT Scan). The fruits are ovoid drupes with 3 longitudinal grooves delimiting three valves; displaying apical stigmatic remains and a single apical germination pore. The exocarp and mesocarp are fused and anatomically indistinguishable one from another; they contain longitudinal fibrous bands with brachysclereids. A centrally placed seed occupies the single locule entirely; the seeds are deltoid with a basal hilum and acuminate tip while the endosperm is ruminate. The taxonomic position of the fossils was explored using phylogenetic analyses of molecular sequences combined with morphological data. Along with the suite of morphological characters that points to an affinity with the Subtribe Attaleinae, Tribe Cocoseae, subfamily Arecoideae, the results of the combined phylogenetic analyses confirm the taxonomic placement. We investigated gathering and cultivating practices and how they complement each other in a rural population of Northwestern Patagonia. We analyzed plant diversity, species similarity, biogeographic origin, and plant use by means of semi-structured interviews and field visits. Pichi Leufu inhabitants used 173 species: 138 cultivated plants, mainly for edible purposes, and 45 wild species principally for medicinal use. Most cultivated species were exotic (91.3%), whereas gathered plants were both native and exotic. While locals maintained vegetable gardens, the adoption of greenhouses improved conditions for certain crops. The integration of novel practices with ancestral knowledge suggests resilient processes in this community, probably reflected in the dynamics of current horticultural and gathering practices, which complement each other. The shipwreck of the Wager in 1741 on the western coast of Patagonia brought English seamen into contact with indigenous cultures already undergoing dramatic changes as a result of growing Spanish influence in the area. Many of the survivors wrote their own stories, notably the gunner, John Bulkeley, and one of the midshipmen, John Byron, who later became an Admiral. Diplolepis, a genus from southern South America traditionally considered monotypic, has recently been shown from molecular data to include a few species that form a monophyletic group at the base of the MOG dade of Asclepiadoideae (Apocynaceae). The species transferred to Diplolepis include plants from temperate South America mostly described under the generic name "Cynanchum". Phylogenetic analyses of cpDNA trnT-trnF and rps16 sequences of 51 accessions of Asciepiadaceae using maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference methods show that all "Cynanchum" from southern Argentina and Chile (except C. atacamense), Tweedia australis and Diplolepis form a well-supported monophyletic group. Within this group, three clades are recognized: two morphologically homogeneous groups from South Andean forests and high elevation areas, and a more diverse group in flower and leaf morphology from southern South American desert and semidesert areas. The phylogenetic position of C. atacamense is equivocal but the species is transferred to Diplolepis based on morphological and biogeographical coherence. The morphological, geographical and environmental characteristics of the three recognized clades of Diplolepis are discussed and eight nomenclatural changes are proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Temperature increment is one of the most visible aspects of climate change. Reservoirs in northern Patagonia are the main location for rainbow trout cage aquaculture activities in Argentina and here, surface water temperature shows an increment that despite leading towards better growth rates, also provokes lack of ovulation, atresia and a partial or total absence of spawning during the breeding season. During the early life history, low survival rates at hatching and first feeding are also observed. The increase in market size (>2 kg) has changed management practices, minimizing the difference between brood stock and individuals destined for consumption. Thus, the present situation differs deeply from carrying capacities forecasted few years ago and this analysis attempts to contribute to management policies including the idea of adaptation to climate change in the making of decisions. The Silurian-Devonian siliciclastic sedimentary units known as Sierra Grande Formation and the upper part of the Ventana Group crop out in the eastern area of the North Patagonian Massif and in the Ventania system, toward the Atlantic border of Argentina. Both sequences show similar stratigraphical characteristics and were deposited in a shallow marine platform paleoenvironment. Previous contributions have provided evidence of an allochthonous Patagonia terrane that amalgamate to Gondwana during the Permian-Triassic. However, other lines of research support a crustal continuity southward, where the Pampean and Famatinian events extend into the northern Patagonia. In either case, the detrital input to the Eo-Mesopaleozoic basins generated along the passive margin tectonic setting should reflect the sedimentary sources. In this contribution, new age data on the sedimentary provenance of these units is provided by U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopic studies on detrital zircons, using LA-ICP-MS and SHRIMP methodologies. The main sedimentary sources of detrital zircons for both regions are of Cambrian-Ordovician and Neoproterozoic age, while a secondary mode is Mesoproterozoic. Zircons from older cratonic sources (Mesoarchean-Paleoproterozoic ages) are scarcely recorded. The sample from the upper section of the Devonian Lolén Formation (Ventana Group) shows an important change in the sedimentary provenance, with a main mode of Mesoproterozoic detrital zircons. Detrital source areas considering the orogenic cycles known for southwest South America (Famatinian, Pampean-Brasiliano, Mesoproterozoic-'Grenvillian' and Paleoproterozoic-'Transamazonian') are proposed. Different traces occur on fossil bones and teeth coming from the Early Miocene Gaiman Formation (Patagonia, Argentina). Most traces were attributed to the action of terrestrial and marine predators and scavengers. However, other traces on bones and teeth from this unit and one tooth from the Eocene La Meseta Formation (Antarctica) are attributed to chemical corrosion by lichens in recent times, that is, in a very late diagenetic time. The living lichens and calcium oxalate deposits occurring on the traces and their particular pattern indicates that they were not produced by vegetal roots. The lichens include reproductive structures which allowed a proper determination. A kind of corrosion pattern (Type 1) on bones and teeth from Patagonia is associated to Sarcogyne orbicularis Korber, Verrucaria sp. Schrad, and Buellia aff. punctiformis (Hoff.) Massal. The lichen Aspicilia aff. aquatica produced rounded holes on an Antarctic tooth (Type 2). On the same tooth, the epilithic lichen Caloplaca sp. Th. Linguistic landscapes have, in the main, been analyzed distributionally, noting the preponderance of different language codes in particular settings. In contrast, we develop a qualitative, critical, frame-analytic account of Welsh language and culture, as displayed in texts in public spaces in Patagonia, the site of a Welsh colonial experiment in the mid-19th century. We identify three frames through which cultural values are ascribed to Wales and to the Welsh language: the colonial history frame, the reflexive cultural Welshness frame, and the Welsh heritage frame. The last of these frames dominates in the visible landscape in Gaiman, Patagonia, where Welshness is associated with commercial heritage tourism initiatives, and particularly casas de té galesas ( 'Welsh tea houses'). We comment on language choice (mainly Welsh and Spanish), but also on multimodal and stylistic resources, used in framing Welshness, and constituting it metaculturally, in various types of public signs and displays. The article discusses an analysis on the habitat of hooded grebe (Podiceps gallardoi) in shallow lakes of Patagonia, Argentina. It states that generalized linear models (GLM) were used to evaluate data on hooded grebe gathered over a various set of lakes. The presence of hooded grebe has a linear relationship with macrophyte cover, lake area, and water conductivity. It mentions that medium size lakes with emerging macrophytes had the highest probability of hooded grebe presence and abundance.

The article presents a study on the application of artificial neural network (ANN) model in forecasting the runoff occurrence at the Alpine catchment site in Patagonia, Chile. Climate data and water level were recorded and validation datasets and independent training were used to determine the performance of the ANN. It was found out that ANN has identified non-linear relationships between the runoff discharge and input parameters. Results reveal that ANN is an effective tool in the prediction and analysis of runoff in partly glaciated areas.

During the breeding seasons 2001–2005 we determined the nest measurements and characteristics of a Chilean Hawk (Accipiter chilensis) pair in an Andean Nothofagus forest of northern Patagonia (36°S; 50 km east of Chillán). The five platforms were built on forked branches in the upper part of the trees, 16–20 m above ground. One nest and one nesting tree were reused. Nests were built close to the main trunk or a vertical gross branch. The nesting trees were live adult Nothofagus dombeyi trees. The measured nests were oval‐shaped platforms similar in size. Nests were built with dry twigs and sticks, which were strongly intertwined. The egg‐shell remains found under the nesting trees were light bluish white or dull white, unspotted and nonglossy on the outer surface, and bluish tinged on the inner surface. Minor differences were found between our descriptions and those previously documented, which could be due to differences in sample size, individual differences between pairs, or structure of the nesting tree.ResumenEntre las estaciones reproductivas de 2001 a 2005 evaluamos las características y morfología del nido de una pareja de peuquitos (Accipiter chilensis) en un bosque andino de Nothofagus en Patagonia norte (36°S). Las cinco plataformas estuvieron ubicadas sobre ramas horquilladas en la parte superior de los árboles, 16–20 m sobre el suelo. Un nido y un árbol/nido fueron reutilizados. Los nidos fueron construidos apegados al tronco principal o a una rama vertical gruesa. Todos los árboles/nido fueron Nothofagus dombeyi adultos vivos. Las plataformas medidas presentaron una forma oval de tamaño similar. Los nidos fueron construidos con ramas secas las cuales estaban fuertemente entrelazadas. Los restos de cáscaras de huevo de peuquitos encontradas bajo los nidos presentaron un color blanco azuloso o blanco sucio, sin manchas y sin brillo en la superficie externa y un color azuloso en la superficie interna. Algunas divergencias se encontraron entre nuestras descripciones y aquellas documentadas previamente, lo que podría deberse a diferencias en tamaños de muestra, diferencias individuales entre parejas, o a la estructura de los árboles nido. New SHRIMP U–Pb zircon, Rb–Sr whole-rock, and 40Ar–39Ar data are presented for the Jurassic silicic volcanic rocks and related granitoids of Patagonia and the Antarctic Peninsula. U–Pb is the only reliable method for dating crystallization in these rocks; Rb–Sr is prone to hydrothermal resetting and Ar–Ar is additionally affected by initial excess 40Ar. Volcanism spanned more than 30 My, but three episodes are defined on the basis of peak activity: V1 (188–178 Ma), V2 (172–162 Ma) and V3 (157–153 Ma). The first essentially coincides with the Karoo–Ferrar mafic magmatism of South Africa, Antarctica and Tasmania. The silicic products of V1 are lower-crustal melts that have incorporated upper-crustal material. The geochemistry of V2 and V3 ignimbrites is more characteristic of destructive plate margins, but the presence of inherited zircon still points to a crustal source. The pattern of volcanism corresponds in space and in time to migration away from the Karoo mantle plume towards the proto-Pacific margin of Gondwana during rifting and break-up. The heat required to initiate bulk crustal fusion may have been supplied by the spreading plume-head, but thinning of the crust during continental dispersion would also have facilitated anatexis.
