2. Social/Political Liberalism Among Freshmen at Selective Private Institutions: A CIRP Data Sharing Project. AIR 1993 Annual Forum Paper.

Abstract

The Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) database based on the American Freshmen Survey provides data for use in making marketing and management decisions in colleges and universities. This paper describes an operational cooperative model for managing and exploiting the data that CIRP makes available. The paper also offers an example of the substantive insights that can be derived from such cooperation. Additional sections: (1) provide a description of a project for sharing CIRP data among the members of an existing consortium, the institutions that are involved in the effort, and the student data in the resulting database; (2) discuss the scales used in the study constructed from the CIRP measures of social and political values and the creation of a general index of liberalism; (3) examine the differences among and within institutions on this index; (4) explore the characteristics of institutions that appear to contribute to differences in the social/political orientations of their freshmen classes; and (5) provide summary observations and suggestions for further research. Analysis suggested that various institutional characteristics and student academic orientations (i.e., intended major) are associated with measurable differences on an index of social/political liberalism. Abstract

This document contains six papers examining the theoretical and practical development of university adult continuing education (ACE) curricula in the late 1990s. The following are among the factors considered in "An Exploration of the Factors Affecting the Adult Continuing Education Curriculum" (Roseanne Benn): goals; cultural, political, and educational forces; and experiences or philosophies of knowledge. "Word-Power: The Influence of Language on Practice in Curriculum Development" (Simon Trezise) explores the power of the dominant discourse and the power of individuals to resist or change it. The drive toward vocational relevance in ACE in the last 2 decades and its effect on curriculum development is analyzed in "A Re-formation of Liberal Values: Embedding Transferable Skills in the Adult Continuing Education Curriculum" (Roger Fieldhouse). The trend toward a "skills-based" history in ACE is traced in "Developing a History Curriculum for Adult Learners--A Case Study" (Lynne Thompson). "A Part-time Humanities Degree off Campus: Factors in Curriculum Design" (Ella Westland) describes efforts at the University of Exeter's outpost in Cornwall to respond to changing student demands and funding formulas. "Widening Access: A Curriculum for Distance Learning" (Caroline Whiting) outlines the process of setting up distance learning provision in ACE at Exeter. (MN)

12. College Impact and Student Liberalism Revisited: The Effect of Student Peers. ASHE 1988 Annual Meeting Paper.

Abstract

In this study, student liberalism is examined longitudinally to determine whether it changes as the result of being exposed to different educational environments. The effect of college on liberalism and the relative efficacy of different measures of the college environment are also addressed. The main focus is on the effect of student peers. Data were drawn from the 1983 Cooperative Institutional Research Program survey sponsored by the American Council on Education and the University of California at Los Angeles Higher Education Research Institute. Results indicate that the effect that college has upon liberalism appears to be due to socialization effects. Effects commonly attributed to the educational process may in fact be due to social forces that exist outside of college, suggesting that many of the findings related to affective student outcomes may need to be reexamined. While it is possible that changes in liberalism are due to cognitive or psychodynamic changes in students, these results indicate that involvement in different social systems affects liberalism differently. Colleges may not directly affect student values, yet bring students of different values together. Instead of developing and promoting values among students, colleges may simply serve as forums that reinforce generally held social values. Researchers may need to try to integrate more proximal measures of student experiences. By relying on structural characteristics to measure the college environment, they are adopting an imprecise frame of reference for interpretation. It is concluded that while college promotes liberalism, the effect is neither large nor universal, and college may now have a moderating rather than liberalizing effect. Contains 28 references. (SM)

Abstract

This report is one in a series of papers documenting, analyzing, and interpreting changes in federal educational policy since President Reagan assumed office in January 1981. The focus of this report is the future of educational policy. The root problem examined deals with electoral policies and the apparent apathy of the public. Results of polls on public opinion regarding education from 1975 to 1982 (obtained from Gallup, New York Times, and Washington Post) are presented. Five categories of changes are discussed as well as five preferences about education that were pursued by the Administration (individual competition, institutional competition, performance standards, focus on content, parental choice, and character) and the extent to which these preferences have succeeded in being implemented. Abstract

The review analyzes the collected materials from the 12th International Scientific Conference “Current Problems of Parliamentarism: History and Modernity (Tauride Readings 2018).” Most of the collected scientific papers cover various aspects of the activities of the State Duma of the Russian Empire. The review considers the key articles of the collection and notes the significance of the published materials of the conference discussion platforms. It is concluded that the collection of articles under review is of great relevance for studying history, theory and practice of the Russian parliamentary system.

Abstract

The international business press has been a powerful and influential voice in modern societies and, as its formative years took place during the Cold War, a closer look at the ideologies that were promoted in this part of the press is of interest. Until the 1970s, Farmand was the only Norwegian business magazine of any size and standing. Trygve J. B. Hoff, Farmand’s editor from 1935, was part of the Mont Pèlerin Society (MPS), a neoliberal intellectual collective established in 1947 with participants such as Friedrich Hayek and Ludwig von Mises. This article is a study of the ideas that Hoff promoted, particularly in Farmand, from the 1940s to the 1970s.
