Hydrogels are highly sought-after absorbent materials for absorbent pads; however, it is still challenging to achieve a satisfactory balance between mechanical performance, water absorption capacity, and active functionalities. In this work, we presented double-network hydrogels synthesized through acrylic acid (AA) polymerization in the presence of quaternized cellulose nanofibrils (QCNF) and Fe 3+ . Spectroscopic and microscopic analyses revealed that the combined QCNF and Fe 3+ facilitated the formation of double-network hydrogels with combined chemical and physical crosslinking. The synergistic effect of QCNF and Fe 3+ resulted in impressive mechanical properties, including tensile strength of 1.98 MPa, fracture elongation of 838.8 %, toughness of 7.47 MJ m -3 , and elastic modulus of 0.35 MPa. In comparison to the single-network PAA hydrogel, the PAA/QCNF/Fe 3+ (PQFe) hydrogels showed higher and relatively stable swelling ratios under varying pH levels and saline conditions. The PQFe hydrogels exhibited notable antioxidant activity, as evidenced by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, and demonstrated effective antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Converting lignin into specific aromatic chemicals for utilization through depolymerization of lignin is an effective way to achieve high-value applications. There are many depolymerization methods that can do this, but there are problems such as harsh reaction conditions, low depolymerization efficiency and uncontrollable target products that need to be solved. This study reports a novel system for the oxidative depolymerization of alkali lignin using Fe- and Mn- modified TS-1 as a catalyst to assist in the highly selective production of vanillin. We also proposed a possible reaction pathway for the oxidative depolymerization of alkali lignin to produce vanillin catalyzed by Fe-Mn/TS-1 catalyst. The catalytic effects of TS-1, Fe/TS-1, and Fe-Mn/TS-1 catalysts on the oxidative depolymerization of lignin to produce phenolic monomers and vanillin were investigated. The results show that the modified catalysts can effectively improve the efficiency of linkage bond breaking in lignin, especially the β-O-4 bond, in which the inter-band transitions of Fe and Mn play an important role. The synergistic effect of the bimetallic-loaded catalyst (Fe-Mn/TS-1) could catalyze the oxidative depolymerization of lignin more efficiently than the monometallic-loaded catalyst (Fe/TS-1). This lignin oxidative depolymerization system produced 40.59 wt% bio-oil including 12.24 wt% phenolic monomers and 16.17 wt% re-lignin after the addition of Fe-Mn/TS-1 catalyst, owning the highest phenolic monomer yield. Surprisingly, this lignin oxidative depolymerization system exhibited high yield for vanillin (8.36 wt%) production. This study aimed to investigate a novel method for the green synthesis of iron nanoparticles (FeNPs) using marigold extract (Calendula officinalis L), kraft pulping black liquor, and nanocellulose. Then, the efficacy of FeNPs as a direct nanofertilizer on the growth parameters of marigold was investigated. Characterization techniques including FESEM, EDX, VSM, and FTIR were used to confirm the successful synthesis of FeNPs. The characterization results confirmed the formation and presence of FeNPs in the 20-100 nm range. FeNPs synthesized with nanocellulose notably enhanced marigold growth parameters compared to other materials. However, all nanoparticle variants, including those from marigold extract and black liquor, improved germination, plant height, root length, and plant dry weight compared to the control. Moreover, treatments exhibited higher available iron and total plant iron levels than the control. High-value utilization of bleached lignin has been widely used in different fields, whereas the investigation on darkened lignin in composite materials was often ignored. In this work, a sort of eco-friendly and structurally robust sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/sodium lignosulfonate (SLS) black composite mulch film was elaborately designed. The chelation and redox reaction effect between Fe ions and SLS lead to the formation of a more quinones structure on lignin, darkening both lignin and the mulch films. The chelation effect between Fe ions and biopolymer formed three-dimensional structures, which can be used as sacrifice bonds to dissipate energy and improve the mechanical properties of the composite films. In particular, the maximum elongation at break and toughness increased from 48.4 % and 1141 kJ/m 3 for the CMC/PVA film to 210.9 % and 1426 kJ/m 3 for the optimized CMC/PVA/SLS/Fe black mulch film, respectively. In addition, the optimized black mulch film also possesses good soil water retention, thermal preservation effect, controlled urea release, and well biodegradability. Conductive materials have been demonstrated to enhance sludge methanogenesis, but few researches have concentrated on the interaction among conductive materials, microorganisms and their immediate living environment. In this study, Fenton iron mud with a high abundance of Fe(III) was recycled and applied in anaerobic reactors to promote anaerobic digestion (AD) process. The results show that the primary content of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) such as polysaccharides and proteins increased significantly, possibly promoting microbial aggregation. Furthermore, with the increment of redox mediators including humic substances in EPS and Fe(III) introduced by Fenton iron mud, the direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) between methanogens and interacting bacteria could be accelerated, which enhanced the rate of methanogenesis in anaerobic digestion (35.21 ± 4.53% increase compared to the control). The further analysis of the anaerobic microbial community confirmed the fact that Fenton iron mud enriched functional microorganisms, such as the abundance of CO 2 -reducing (e.g. Chloroflexi) and Fe(III)-reducing bacteria (e.g., Tepidimicrobium), thereby expediting the electron transfer reaction in the AD process via microbial DIET and dissimilatory iron reduction (DIR). The excess sludge from municipal sewage treatment plants is rich in Fe (III) due to chemical dephosphorization. The activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by biochar derived from anaerobic and aerobic iron-containing excess sludge was studied systematically in this research. Fe (III)-containing excess sludge was cultured in an anaerobic environment for conversion of partial Fe (III) to Fe (II), which was further carbonized to prepare biochar labeled AnSx@Fe. Meanwhile, aerobic sludge with different Fe (III) content was directly carbonized to produce biochar labeled AeS@Fe. For biochar (AnS20@Fe-15%) prepared from 15% Fe(III)-containing anaerobic cultured 20 days sludge, the relative contents of Fe (III) and Fe (II) were 21.26% and 78.74%, which were 31.03% and 68.97% for biochar (AeS@Fe-10%) prepared from 10% Fe (III)-containing aerobic sludge. Fe (III) can be reduced to Fe (II) by both anaerobic culture and carbonization. Their removal rates of tetracycline (TC) through 60 min PMS activation were 97% and 98%, with TOC (Total organic carbon) removal of 61.8% and 53.4% respectively. The reactive species including sulfate radical [Formula: see text], hydroxyl radical (·OH) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) were produced during PMS activation. After O 2 -aeration treatment of both AeS@Fe and AnSx@Fe, the relative content of Fe (II) was decreased and group C = O was disappeared, which resulted in reduction of [Formula: see text], ·OH and 1 O 2 . The generation of [Formula: see text] and ·OH was dominated by the Fe (II) activation and the 1 O 2 generation was originated from graphite type N and C = O. In this study, we report the development of physically cross-linked hydroxyethyl cellulose grafted polyacrylic acid-co-polyacrylamide/silver nanocomposite [Ag@HEC-g-P(AA-co-AM)-Fe 3+ ] possesses excellent antimicrobial and enhanced MB adsorption. A green in-situ reduction process was used to prepare silver nanoparticles. UV-Vis spectroscopy, TEM, ATR-IR, XRD, SEM-EDS were used to analyze the green produced silver nanoparticles and Ag@HEC-g-P(AA-co-AM)-Fe 3+ . The swelling ratio of Ag@HEC-g-P(AA-co-AM)-Fe 3+ is dependent on AgNPs content and pH. The swelling kinetics fitted with Pseudo-second order. The cumulative release#% of AgNPs was 29.63 ± 1.7%, respectively up to 10 h and its kinetics obey Korsmeyer-Peppas model. The grafting to HEC and incorporation of AgNPs into HEC-g-P(AA-co-AM)-Fe 3+ enhances the thermal stabilities and increases total activation energies from 19,122.2 to 66,287.1 KJ mol. Ag@HEC-g-P(AA-co-AM)-Fe 3+ has powerful antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, Micrococcus leutus, Staphyllococus aureus. The maximum adsorption capacity of MB was 133.38 ± 1.25 mg/g at nanocomposite concentration (300 mg/L), pH (9.0), and MB concentration (5 mg/L). To anticipate the adsorption mechanism, Pseudo-first and second-order models, as well as three isotherm models (Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin) were used to model adsorption kinetics. The development of conductive, soft, ultra-stretchable, and asymmetrically adhesive hydrogels is difficult and essential for both wearable electronics and anti-adhesion tissue dressings. In particular, there is still no simple, effective and universal approach to construct an asymmetrically adhesive multifunctional hydrogel. Here, we first synthesized lignosulfonate sodium (LS)-doped PAA hydrogels with uniform adhesion (adhesive strength: ~30.5 kPa), conductivity (~0.45 S/m), stretchability (up to ~2250%), and low compressive modulus (~20 kPa). In the second step, an oriented soaking of Fe 3+ onto the upper surface of the resultant composite hydrogel renders the upper surface non-adhesive. This novel strategy masterfully delivers asymmetric adhesion behavior to the upper and bottom surfaces of the same hydrogel (~0 kPa adhesive strength for the upper surface; strong adhesive strength of ~27 kPa for the bottom surface). The asymmetric adhesive hydrogel has proven to adhere well onto the human skin and achieve waste-barrier. Iron reduction and sulfate reduction often occur simultaneously in anoxic systems, and where that is the case, the molar ratio between the reactions (i.e., Fe/SO 4 reduced) influences their impact on water quality and carbon storage. Previous research has shown that pH and the supply of electron donors and acceptors affect that ratio, but it is unclear how their influences compare and affect one another. This study examines impacts of pH and the supply of acetate, sulfate, and goethite on the ratio of iron to sulfate reduction in semi-continuous sediment bioreactors. We examined which parameter had the greatest impact on that ratio and whether the parameter influences depended on the state of each other. Results show that pH had a greater influence than acetate supply on the ratio of iron to sulfate reduction, and that the impact of acetate supply on the ratio depended on pH. In acidic reactors (pH 6.0 media), the ratio of iron to sulfate reduction decreased from 3:1 to 2:1 as acetate supply increased (0-1 mM). In alkaline reactors (pH 7.5 media), iron and sulfate were reduced in equal proportions, regardless of acetate supply. Secondly, a comparison of experiments with and without sulfate shows that the extent of iron reduction was greater if sulfate reduction was occurring and that the effect was larger in alkaline reactors than acidic reactors. Thus, the influence of sulfate supply on iron reduction extent also depended on pH and suggests that iron reduction grows more dependent on sulfate reduction as pH increases. Carboxymethyl cellulose-based hydrogel coated Fe 3 O 4 magnetic nanoparticles were prepared using a coprecipitation combining graft copolymerization method, and characterized by various techniques to study their structure-property relationships. The nanocomposite was used as a heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst for Acid Red 73 degradation. The effects of several key parameters, solution pH, H 2 O 2 concentration, catalyst dosage, and temperature of the reaction medium on the pseudo-first-order kinetics of dye degradation was evaluated. The results showed that the nanocomposite catalyst were highly effective in activating H 2 O 2 to produce reactive radicals for dye degradation, achieving complete decomposition under optimal conditions of 300 min at 25 °C and pH 3.5 with 100 mM H 2 O 2 and 200 mg·L -1 catalyst. The complexing hydrogel-Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ were the key factors that speed up the redox cycling between Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ species, thus accelerate the fast degradation rate of target pollutants. Scavenging experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance analyses revealed that Acid Red 73 was decomposed mainly by the attack of •OH radicals. Various types of micropollutants, e.g., pharmaceuticals and their metabolites and resistant strains of pathogenic microorganisms, are usually found in hospital wastewaters. The aim of this paper was to study the presence of 74 frequently used pharmaceuticals, legal and illegal drugs, and antibiotic-resistant bacteria in 5 hospital wastewaters in Slovakia and Czechia and to compare the efficiency of several advanced oxidations processes (AOPs) for sanitation and treatment of such highly polluted wastewaters. The occurrence of micropollutants and antibiotic-resistant bacteria was investigated by in-line SPE-LC-MS/MS technique and cultivation on antibiotic and antibiotic-free selective diagnostic media, respectively. The highest maximum concentrations were found for cotinine (6700 ng/L), bisoprolol (5200 ng/L), metoprolol (2600 ng/L), tramadol (2400 ng/L), sulfamethoxazole (1500 ng/L), and ranitidine (1400 ng/L). In the second part of the study, different advanced oxidation processes, modified Fenton reaction, ferrate(VI), and oxidation by boron-doped diamond electrode were tested in order to eliminate the abovementioned pollutants. Obtained results indicate that the modified Fenton reaction and application of boron-doped diamond electrode were able to eliminate almost the whole spectrum of selected micropollutants with efficiency higher than 90%. All studied methods achieved complete removal of the antibiotic-resistant bacteria present in hospital wastewaters.

With the short-term exposure to Fe 2+ , the mechanism of autotrophic denitrification and sulfide oxidation and the correlation between microbial community changes and environmental factors have been explored in the ADSOB process. RSM was used to optimize conditions for the maximum nitrate reduction and sulfide oxidation. About 88% of nitrate could be autotrophically denitrified to nitrogen by utilizing sulfide as the electron donor with the molar ratio C/N of 1.14 and S/N of 0.99 at pH 7.1. Lower Fe 2+ additions can reduce TDS inhibition with dissolved sulfide to form FeS precipitates, while high amount of Fe 2+ limited the mass transfer of NO 3 - may be generated. High-throughput sequencing and RDA analysis revealed the correlation between ferrous iron, environmental factors and microorganisms. Sulfurospirillum, Rhodanobacter, Thauera and Thiobacillus were all slightly promoted at NFL level and inhibited at NFH level. And the narrow angles of the arrows indicated that Thauera, Sulfurospirillum and Thiobacillus were positively correlated with SO 0 may be generated. High-throughput sequencing and RDA analysis revealed the correlation between ferrous iron, environmental factors and microorganisms. Sulfurospirillum, Rhodanobacter, Thauera and Thiobacillus were all slightly promoted at NFL level and inhibited at NFH level. And the narrow angles of the arrows indicated that Thauera, Sulfurospirillum and Thiobacillus were positively correlated with SO 4 2- concentrations, while large angles indicated these bacteria were inversely related with TDS and NO 3 - arrows, which further confirmed that these bacteria played a dominant role in the ADSOB process, and can reduce NO 3 - by the oxidation of TDS. Methanogenesis and iron reduction play major roles in determining global fluxes of greenhouse gases. Despite their importance, environmental factors that influence their interactions are poorly known. Here, we present evidence that pH significantly influences the balance between each reaction in anoxic environments that contain ferric (oxyhydr)oxide minerals. In sediment bioreactors that contained goethite as a source of ferric iron, both iron reduction and methanogenesis occurred but the balance between them varied significantly with pH. Compared to bioreactors receiving acidic media (pH 6), electron donor oxidation was 85% lower for iron reduction and 61% higher for methanogenesis in bioreactors receiving alkaline media (pH 7.5). Thus, methanogenesis displaced iron reduction considerably at alkaline pH. Geochemistry data collected from U.S. aquifers demonstrate that a similar pattern also exists on a broad spatial scale in natural settings. In contrast, in bioreactors that were not augmented with goethite, clay minerals served as the source of ferric iron and the balance between each reaction did not vary significantly with pH. We therefore conclude that pH can regulate the relative contributions of microbial iron reduction and methanogenesis to carbon fluxes from terrestrial environments. We further propose that the availability of ferric (oxyhydr)oxide minerals influences the extent to which the balance between each reaction is sensitive to pH. Iron-copper bimetal supported on mesoporous γ-Al 2 O 3 with different Fe/Cu ratios was prepared via a modified evaporation-induced self-assembly method and employed to degrade 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) in a Fenton-like process. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction spectrum and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy results confirmed the co-doping of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ and Cu + /Cu 2+ into the lattice of γ-Al 2 O 3 through the bonds of AlOFe and AlOCu. With the iron and copper co-doped in γ-Al 2 O 3 , three-fold oxygen vacancies (V 0 ) could be achieved compared with that of non-metal catalysts, which was favorable for the reduction of iron and copper species. The 1Fe3Cu-γ-Al 2 O 3 with a Fe/Cu mass ratio of 1:3 exhibited the highest activity on Fenton-like degradation of 4-CP due to the synergistic effects of Fe and Cu by facilitating the electron transfer in the recycles of Cu + /Cu 2+ and Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ based on the results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and electro paramagnetic resonance analysis. The utilization efficiency of H 2 O 2 was as high as 86.0% when 4-CP almost disappeared (i.e., 99.7 percent of 0.78 mM 4-CP) at 240 min and pH 7.0, additionally, their dechlorination and TOC removal efficiencies were 92.0% and 81.6%, respectively. In this study, a sequential Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 reaction and biological process was employed as a low-cost depth treatment method to remove recalcitrant compounds from coal-chemical engineering wastewater after regular biological treatment. First of all, a chemical oxygen demand (COD) and color removal efficiency of 66 and 63% was achieved at initial pH of 6.8, 25 mmol L -1 of H 2 O 2 , and 2 g L -1 of Fe 0 in the Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 reaction. According to the gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) and gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID) analysis, the recalcitrant compounds were effectively decomposed into short-chain organic acids such as acetic, propionic, and butyric acids. Although these acids were resistant to the Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 reaction, they were effectively eliminated in the sequential air lift reactor (ALR) at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 2 h, resulting in a further decrease of COD and color from 120 to 51 mg L -1 and from 70 to 38 times, respectively. A low operational cost of 0.35 $ m -3 was achieved because pH adjustment and iron-containing sludge disposal could be avoided since a total COD and color removal efficiency of 85 and 79% could be achieved at an original pH of 6.8 by the above sequential process with a ferric ion concentration below 0.8 mg L -1 after the Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 reaction. It indicated that the above sequential process is a promising and cost-effective method for the depth treatment of coal-chemical engineering wastewaters to satisfy discharge requirements.

A one-pot bio-iron system was established to investigate synergetic abiotic and biotic effects between iron and microorganisms on Cr(VI) removal. More diverse iron corrosion and reactive solids, such as green rusts, lepidocrocite and magnetite were found in the bio-iron system than in the Fe 0 -H 2 O system, leading to 4.3 times higher Cr(VI) removal efficiency in the bio-iron system than in the Fe 0 -H 2 O system. The cycling experiment also showed that the Cr(VI) removal capacity of Fe 0 in the bio-iron system was 12.4 times higher than that in the Fe 0 -H 2 O system. A 62days of life-span could be achieved in the bio-iron system, while the Fe 0 -H 2 O system lost its efficacy after 30days. Enhanced effects of extra Fe 2+ on Cr(VI) removal was observed, largely contributed to the adsorbed Fe 2+ on iron surface, which could function as an extra reductant for Cr(VI) and promote the electron transfer on the solid phase. The results also showed that the reduction of Cr(VI) by microorganisms was insignificant, indicating the adsorption/co-precipitation of Cr by iron oxides on iron surface was responsible for the overall Cr(VI) removal. In this study, Pseudomonas putida was chosen as a typical strain to study the bacterial toxicity of nZVI/Pd. The CFU assay results indicated that nZVI/Pd was toxic to P. putida cells but the toxicity decreased with an increase in DO. The experiments isolated by dialysis bag and flow cytometry analysis suggested that both membrane disruption caused by direct contact and oxidative stress were the main bactericidal mechanisms under the aerobic condition, while membrane disruption resulting from direct contact was the primary bactericidal mechanism in the anaerobic system. Furthermore, according to TEM, SEM, EDS, XRD, FTIR and XPS, it was indicated that in the aerobic system, the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by nZVI/Pd could oxidize the amide and hydroxyl groups into carboxyl groups, resulting in a decline in peptides and increase in polysaccharides. In addition, the ROS also accumulated inside the cell and caused cell inactivation via oxidative stress. In the anaerobic system, the adhered nZVI/Pd particles would attack the functional groups such as carboxyl, ester and amide, leading to the decline in proteins and polysaccharides and subsequent damage of the membrane. In this study, two kinds of cellulose derivatives (polyanionic cellulose (PAC) and hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose (HPMC)) were selected as stabilizers of Pd/Fe nanoparticles (NPs) to investigate their influences on the debromination performances of 2,2',4,4'-tretrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE47). Field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) images revealed that the cellulose-stabilized Pd/Fe NPs were smaller and more uniform than the bare-Pd/Fe NPs. X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results suggested that cellulose coatings found on Pd/Fe NPs surfaces featured some antioxidation abilities, which followed the order of HPMC < PAC. Sedimentation tests demonstrated that the stabilizing power of PAC for Pd/Fe NPs was higher than that of HPMC. Fourier transfer infrared spectrometer (FTIR) results indicated that PAC molecules were bound to the Pd/Fe NPs surfaces by polar covalent bonds and hydrogen bonds, while HPMC molecules interacted with the nanoparticles by hydrogen bonds. Batch debromination test for BDE47 demonstrated that the catalytic debromination rate with cellulose-stabilized Pd/Fe NPs was higher than that with bare-Pd/Fe NPs during reaction period of 15 min. Overall, this study indicated that both celluloses are beneficial to forming smaller, more regular, stable and antioxidative Pd/Fe NPs, leading to higher debromination reactivity for BDE47 compared with the bare-Pd/Fe NPs. Therefore Pd/Fe NPs can be utilized as a promising remediation technology for the contaminated groundwater and soils.

The unique electrocoagulator proposed in this study is highly efficient at removing Ni-EDTA, providing a potential remediation option for wastewater containing lower concentrations of Ni-EDTA (Ni ≤ 10 mg L -1 ). In the electrocoagulation (EC) system, cylindrical graphite was used as a cathode, and a packed-bed formed from iron scraps was used as an anode. The results showed that the removal of Ni-EDTA increased with the application of current and favoured acidic conditions. We also found that the iron scrap packed-bed anode was superior in its treatment ability and specific energy consumption (SECS) compared with the iron rod anode. In addition, the packed density and temperature had a large influence on the energy consumption (ECS). Over 94.3% of Ni and 95.8% of TOC were removed when conducting the EC treatment at an applied current of 0.5 A, initial pH of 3, air-purged rate 0.2 L min -1 , anode packed density of 400 kg m -3 temperature of 313 K and time of 30 min. SEM analysis of the iron scraps indicated that the specific area of the anode increased after the EC. The XRD analysis of flocs produced during EC revealed that hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) and magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) were the main by-products under aerobic and anoxic conditions, respectively. A kinetic study demonstrated that the removal of Ni-EDTA followed a first-order model with the current parameters. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) forms stable complexes with toxic metals such as nickel due to its strong chelation. The electro-Fenton (EF) process using a cathode made from palladium (Pd), reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and carbon felt, fed with air, exhibited high activities and stability for the removal of 10 mg L(-1) EDTA-Ni solution. Pd/RGO catalyst was prepared by one-pot synthesis; the scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis indicated nanoparticles and RGO were well distributed on carbon felt, forming three dimensional architecture with both large macropores and a mesoporous structure. The cyclic voltammetric results showed that the presence of RGO in Pd/RGO/carbon felt significantly increased the current response of two-electron reduction of O2 (0.45 V). The key factors influencing the removal efficiency of EDTA-Ni, such as pH, current and Fe(2+) concentration, were investigated. Under the optimum conditions, the removal efficiency of EDTA-Ni reached 83.8% after 100 min EF treatment. Mechanism analysis indicated that the introduction of RGO in Pd/RGO/carbon felt significantly enhanced the electrocatalytic activities by inducing •OH in the EF process; direct H2O2 oxidation still accounted for a large amount of EDTA-Ni removal efficiency.

In this study, the combination of Fe(3+)/HCl and ultrasonic treatment was applied to selectively hydrolyze cellulose for the preparation of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). It was found that the crystallinity and specific surface area of hydrocellulose samples were higher (78.92% and 2.23581 m(2)g(-1), respectively), compared with the method that only used Fe(3+)/HCl catalyst without ultrasonic treatment. Meanwhile, the hydrolysate can be extracted and reused for cellulose hydrolysis for three runs, which was effective in saving the dosage of chemicals and reducing the pollution of the environment without affecting the properties of hydrocellulose. Moreover, the increased concentration of total reducing sugar (TRS) after three runs may be used as a valuable source in biofuels production. The technology of cellulose hydrolysis, by retaining the crystalline region for MCC products while promoting hydrolysis of amorphous region for further utilization is of great novelty, which may prove valuable in converting biomass into chemicals and biofuels, environmentally and economically., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. The effects of the colorimetric buffer solutions were investigated while the two colorimetric reactions of Al-ferron complex and Fe-ferron complex occurred individually, and the effects of the testing wavelength and the pH of the solutions were also investigated. A timed complexation colorimetric analysis method of Al-Fe-ferron in view of the total concentration of (Al + Fe) was then established to determine the species distribution of polymeric Al-Fe. The testing wavelength was recommended at 362 nm and the testing pH value was 5. With a comparison of the ratios of nAl/nFe, the standard adsorption curves of the polymeric Al-Fe solutions were derived from the experimental results. Furthermore, the solutions' composition were various in both the molar nAl/nFe ratios, i.e. 0/0, 5/5, 9/1 and 0/10, and the concentrations associated with the total [Al + Fe] which ranged from 10(-5) to 10(-4) mol/L.
