Aim: To obtain an in‐depth understanding of the lived experiences, values, and beliefs of Taiwanese women with breast cancer who withdrew from cancer treatment. Background: Fear of side effects, negative experiences and personal beliefs were identified as reasons for withdrawing from cancer treatments. Body–mind consciousness and body autonomy play a crucial role in cancer treatment decisions. Design: Descriptive phenomenological approach. Methods: We conducted semi‐structured, face‐to‐face and in‐depth interviews with 16 women diagnosed with breast cancer. Participants were purposefully selected from the Cancer Registry database. Employing a phenomenological approach, our aim was to explore the lived experiences of these individuals. Data analysis followed Giorgi's five‐step process. To ensure a comprehensive report the COREQ checklist was applied. Findings: 'The Determination to Preserve Me' is the essence of treatment withdrawal, identified by three themes and seven sub‐themes. 'Raising Body‐Mind Consciousness' was generated using body autonomy and preventing repeated psychological trauma from the participant's view. Their lifestyles, maintaining the family role, and returning to a normal trajectory help develop 'Maintaining Stability for Being a Patient and a Family Carer'. 'Self‐Defending Against the Body Harm' was generated by concerns about maintaining health and preventing harm. Conclusion: Women's behaviours became transformed by suffering. Actions were influenced by physical and psychological distress, misconceptions about treatments, and appearance changes by self‐determination through self‐protection. Relevance to clinical practice: Healthcare professionals should respect women's autonomy and work collaboratively to ensure their decision‐making with accurate information and awareness of the potential risks and benefits of treatment withdrawal need to concern. Background: Shared decision making (SDM) is a patient-centered nursing concept that emphasizes the autonomy of patients. SDM is a co-operative process that involves information exchange and communication between medical staff and patients for making treatment decisions. In this study, we explored the experiences of clinical nursing staff participating in SDM. Methods: This study adopted a qualitative research design. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 21 nurses at a medical center in northern Taiwan. All interview recordings were transcribed verbatim. Content analysis was performed to analyze the data. Results: The findings yielded the following three themes covering seven categories: knowledge regarding SDM, trigger discussion and coordination, and respect of sociocultural factors. Conclusions: The results of this study describe the experiences of clinical nursing staff participating in SDM and can be used as a reference for nursing education and nursing administrative supervisors wishing to plan and enhance professional nursing SDM in nursing education. Objectives: We conducted a qualitative process evaluation embedded in a cluster randomized controlled trial in rural Guangxi China, which successfully reduced antibiotic use for children upper respiratory tract infections. This study aims to report on the factors that influenced behaviour change among providers and caregivers in the intervention arm, and to explore contextual considerations which may have influenced trial outcomes. Methods: A total of 35 in-depth interviews were carried out with hospital directors, doctors, and caregivers of children. Participants were recruited from six purposively selected facilities, including two higher performing and two lower performing facilities per trial results. Interviews were conducted in Chinese and translated to English. We also observed guideline training sessions and prescription peer review meetings. Data were analysed using framework analysis. Results: Intervention-arm doctors described that training sessions improved their knowledge, skills and confidence in appropriate prescribing. This was contrasted by control arm participants who did not receive training and reported less agency in reducing prescribing rates. Prescription peer review meetings were seen as an opportunity for further education, action planning and goal setting, particularly in high performing hospitals, where these meetings were led by senior doctors who were perceived to have relevant clinical experience. Caregiver participants reported that intervention educational materials were helpful but they identified information from doctors was more useful. Providers and caregivers also described contextual health system factors, including hospital competition, short consultation times, and antibiotic availability without prescription, which shaped care preferences. Conclusions: This qualitative process evaluation identified a range of factors that may have influenced behaviour among providers and caregivers leading to observed changes in reducing inappropriate antibiotic prescribing in China. Future interventions to reduce antibiotic prescribing should consider system level and wider contextual factors to better understand behaviours and patient care preferences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To explore the efficacy of community rehabilitation for facilitating daily function among patients with mental illness. Design and Methods: A quasi‐experimental design was used. Two hundred and sixty‐four participants completed a daily living function scale questionnaire and provided disease‐related information. Findings: Community rehabilitation was shown to be efficient in helping to stabilize mental illness and enhance daily function. Daily function had a significant and positive correlation with disease stability. Practice Implications: Community rehabilitation for patients with mental illness can effectively stabilize and prevent disability among those with mental illness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study was designed to explore Taiwanese school students’ attitudes toward sexual relationships and premarital sex. This was an exploratory descriptive, qualitative study. Focus groups (N = 8) were conducted with 47 adolescents from three high schools in Taiwan. Transcripts were transcribed and thematically analyzed using Atlas V 5.0. Adolescent attitudes toward sexual relationships and premarital sexual behavior comprise the following three dimensions: (1) external incentives, (2) the developmental process, and (3) internal control. External incentives include the normalization of sexual behavior between peers, the desire to feel included in a group, parental influence, and media influence. The developmental process includes imagining the sexual experience and onset of sexual activity. Internal control includes the fear of pregnancy, the fear of parental rejection, and the fear of being judged. These findings can provide a reference for designing future sex education curricula and counseling programs for adolescents. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Aims and objectives. This study aimed to explore patient perception of the meaning of family involvement in elective surgery decision making in Taiwan. Background. Informed consent is based on respecting patient autonomy. However in cultures where family plays a key role in medical decision making, a patient's perspective of family involvement has not been fully investigated. Design and methods. Based on a phenomenological approach, this study conducted semistructured interviews to elicit the experiences of 10 elective surgery patients in southern Taiwan who had family present during their surgery decision making. An adapted version of Colaizzi's (1978) method was used to analyse narratives. Results. Three themes emerged from the elective surgery patients' perception of the meaning of family involvement in their surgery decision-making process: (1) Primacy of family well-being, (2) family as information broker, and (3) family as patient advocate. Patients articulated reciprocal relationships amongst family members, and they expressed overall family well-being as their ultimate concern when making their treatment decision. The essence of the elective surgery patients' perception of the meaning of family involvement in decision making was 'family as a whole'. Conclusions. Patients' concern for overall family well-being and their perspective that family plays a supportive role in transmitting information and acting as patient advocate during the decision-making process may both enhance and restrict individual patient autonomy. In cultures where family is central in decision making, appropriately involving the family in medical decisions should not be overlooked. Relevance to clinical practice. Understanding and acknowledging the important roles of family in medical decision making from the patients' perspective can enable health professionals to more effectively communicate with patients and their family. Objective This study discusses the intervening conditions of hospital-based home care ( HBHC) for people with severe mental illness in Taiwan. Design and Sample Grounded theory of the Strauss and Corbin approach was used. Participants were selected from six hospitals in Central Taiwan, including 21 clients, 19 caregivers, and 25 professionals. Measures Semi-structured one-on-one interviews were used to collect data. Data analysis consisted of three stages: open, axial, and selective coding. Data analysis, data collection, and sampling were conducted through the constant comparative analysis process. Results Two categories were generated as positive and negative intervening conditions of HBHC services. Eight positive effects and nine negative effects were generated from the data. Conclusions Several positive and negative intervening conditions were found in this study to affect the delivery of HBHC. Government support and several limitations regarding HBHC services quality should be noticed and improved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
