We present astronomically tuned high resolution (∼3–4 Kyr) 15.8-Myr long benthic foraminiferal δ 18 O and δ 13 C records from IODP Site U1337 in the east equatorial Pacific, which provide a reference standard for stratigraphic correlation of deep sea sediments. A long-term glaciation history over the past 15.8 Myr has been recorded in the δ 18 O. Two of the most significant glaciation events include the East Antarctic Ice Sheet expansion (EAIE) at 13.8 Ma and the final onset of the Northern Hemisphere Glaciation (NHG) in 3.3–2.5 Ma. A series of Miocene and Pliocene glaciation events exist between the EAIE and NHG, which are important glaciation attempts before the Earth finally entered the full “icehouse” world in the late Pleistocene. A long-term ocean carbon isotope decrease over the past 15.8 Myr has been recorded in the δ 13 C. Ocean circulation change was the major cause of the ocean carbon isotope decrease in 9.4–8.1 Ma and 4–0 Ma, whereas strengthened continental chemical weathering controlled the long-term ocean carbon isotope decrease in most of the time of the past 15.8 Myr. The divergence in benthic foraminiferal δ 13 C and ε Nd provides strong evidence of significant ocean circulation change between 12.1 and 9.2 Ma which was probably related to the formation of the Isthmus of Panama. The internal feedbacks such as continental weathering and sea surface temperature change have great potential for modulating the weak 100 and 400 Kyr signals in astronomical forcing into strong 100 and 400 Kyr signals in global ice volume and carbon cycle. East Antarctic ice sheet expansion (EAIE) at ∼13.9 Ma in the middle Miocene represents a major climatic event during the long-term Cenozoic cooling, but ocean circulation and carbon cycle changes during this event remain unclear. Here, we present new fish teeth isotope ( ε Nd) and benthic foraminiferal B/Ca records from the South China Sea (SCS), newly integrated meridional Pacific benthic foraminiferal δ 18 O and δ 13 C records and simulated results from a biogeochemical box model to explore the responses of deep Pacific Ocean circulation and carbon cycle across EAIE. The ε Nd and meridional benthic δ 13 C records reveal a more isolated Pacific Deep Water (PDW) and a sluggish Pacific meridional overturning circulation during the post-EAIE with respect to the pre-EAIE owing to weakened southern-sourced deep water formation. The deep-water [CO 2 − 3 ] and calcium carbonate mass accumulation rate in the SCS display markedly similar increases followed by recoveries to the pre-EAIE level during EAIE, which were probably caused by a shelf–basin shift of CaCO 3 deposition and strengthened weathering due to a sea level fall within EAIE. The model results show that the ∼1‰ positive δ 13 C excursion during EAIE could be attributed to increased weathering of high- δ 13 C shelf carbonates and a terrestrial carbon reservoir expansion. The drawdown of atmospheric CO 2 over the middle Miocene were probably caused by combined effects of increased shelf carbonate weathering, expanded land biosphere carbon storage and a sluggish deep Pacific meridional overturning circulation. The Middle Miocene (~16–11.6 Ma) had atmospheric CO 2 levels comparable to the present day, and thus the mechanisms controlling the interactions of the climate system and the carbon cycle during the Middle Miocene may have significant implications for future climate change. In this study, we examined the phase relationship between benthic foraminiferal δ18O and δ13C records, within the 100-kyr band, during the Late Quaternary and the Middle Miocene. Our results suggest that benthic foraminiferal δ18O and δ13C were highly coherent and in-phase within the 100-kyr band during the Middle Miocene, in contrast to the anti-phased relationship during the Late Quaternary. However, the causes of this contrast remain elusive. We used a biogeochemical box model to explore the mechanisms of the in-phase relationship in the 100-kyr band during the Middle Miocene. The model results show that the in-phase relationship can be attributed to two mechanisms: (1) a shelf-basin carbonate shift regulated by sea-level fluctuations which originated from the growth and decay of the Antarctic ice sheet, within the 100-kyr band; and (2) changes in terrestrial carbon inputs and the biological pump driven by the discharge of riverine nutrients, which was regulated by precipitation variability in low latitudes, within the eccentricity-modulated precessional band. Thus, we propose that both high- and low-latitude processes played critical roles in the Middle Miocene carbon cycle, within the 100-kyr band. We further show that chemical weathering played a potential role in regulating the atmospheric p CO 2 on the orbital time scale during the Middle Miocene. • Phase relationships between benthic δ18O and δ13C records in the 100-kyr band are reinvestigated. • Terrestrial inputs explain the in-phase relationship of benthic δ18O and δ13C in the 100-kyr band over the Middle Miocene. • Both changes of Antarctic ice sheet and low-latitude precipitation played critical roles in the Middle Miocene carbon cycle. The Late Cenozoic East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) enhancement has been attributed to several factors, such as uplift of the Tibetan Plateau, retreat of the Paratethys Sea, and global cooling related to polar ice volume increment. However, the fundamental forcing factors remain enigmatic due to the absence of long and continuous climate records and sensitive indicators. Here we reanalyzed the published grain-size record of Sikouzi fine sediments in the western Chinese Loess Plateau through end-member (EM) modeling. The results indicate that EM 2 with grain-size peaks between 10–100 μm decreased in content from 20.1 to 17 Ma and stepwise increased from 17 to 0.07 Ma during the following six stages (17–15 Ma, 15–12 Ma, 12–8 Ma, 8–6 Ma, 6–4 Ma and 4–0 Ma). Such varying trends can be successively correlated in seven stages with the integrated benthic δ18O record, implying that global warming weakened the EAWM from 20.1 to 17 Ma and global cooling has stepwise strengthened the EAWM since 17 Ma. Therefore, we conclude that global temperature change played a major role on the evolution of EAWM during the Neogene period. By contrast, Late Cenozoic palaeogeographic reorganization caused by uplift of the Tibetan Plateau and retreat of the Paratethys Sea contributed less to the evolutionary evolution of EAWM. Spectral analysis of the EM 2 data first provided direct evidence of orbitally influenced deposition in the study area and thus the EAWM variations during the Neogene period. The 100-kyr period became weak since ~10 Ma, possibly due to the decrease in sensitivity of a more stable, continental-scale ice sheet in Antarctica to local insolation forcing, deserving further investigation. Abstract: The vegetation on the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau is highly sensitive to climatic changes and thus represents a potentially interesting environmental archive. Pollen samples from the Fanjiaping Loess section in Lanzhou on the western Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) were analyzed in conjunction with OSL dating. The results indicate that pollen zone B (60.6–46.0 ka, correlative to the early MIS 3) had the greatest abundances of Cupressaceae, Tsuga, Gramineae and Cyperaceae of the entire section, suggesting a warm phase during the last glacial period. These pollen taxa decreased significantly in abundance in the zones C (46.0–39.0 ka) and D (39.0–27.0 ka), reflecting a substantial climate cooling from the middle MIS 3 to MIS 2. These results correlate with climate records from the South China Sea, the CLP, Baikal Lake, North America, North Atlantic Ocean and other regions, and probably correspond with the decline of northern high-latitude insolation and the increase of global ice volume from 50 to 20 ka. In particular, arboreal pollen, fern spore and algae abundances declined sharply since ∼40 ka, while shrub and herb pollen reached the highest abundances. Conifer pollen Picea and Abies abundance also rose markedly and increased up the section. This implies significant climate deterioration and likely corresponded with substantial growth of the polar ice sheets since ∼40 ka. The decreasing temperature caused by an insolation decline during the last glacial period probably reinforced the cooling effect in a ‘snow/ice/albedo’ feedback, which would result in less climate sensitivity to radiative forcing. Meanwhile, vegetation decline in the Northern Hemisphere during the last glacial period and tundra development at high latitudes possibly caused additional cooling, enhancing the growth of polar ice sheets since 40 ka. The development of polar ice sheets increased the polar-to-equator temperature and pressure gradients, strengthening the westerlies and supplying plenty of moisture to Northwest China during 40–30 ka. Lake sediments developed widely on the Tibetan Plateau during 40–30 ka, probably related to an increase in the seasonality of middle-to-low latitude insolation which caused an enhancement of glacier melting on the Plateau.
