This paper presents a glacial geomorphological map relating to two rapidly receding glaciers in the Cordillera Darwin Icefield. The Marinelli marine-terminating glacier and Pigafetta freshwater-terminating glacier are selected to represent different glacial regimes producing different geomorphological records under similar climatic conditions. We combine mapping from satellite and aerial imagery with fieldwork, updating limited previous mapping. The map reveals two principal glacial landform assemblages: (1) a marine-terminating system, dominated by the formation of a large arcuate terminal morainic complex, glaciolacustrine landforms (shorelines) and extended ice-contact topography in the Fiordo Marinelli area; and (2) an assemblage of sequential frontal moraine ridges and outwash plains that formed when the former land-terminating Pigafetta glacier retreated from the Bahía Ainsworth area. Finally, the map is designed as a basis for future chronological campaigns and to enable a refined reconstruction of the glacial history of these two glaciers in a climatologically significant part of the world. Patagonia features the most extensive glaciers of the Southern Hemisphere, excluding Antarctica, and a vast inventory of glacial landforms, so it is thought to have played a key role in (paleo)glacier studies since the late 19th century. However, no systematic attempts to characterize the specific research trends and the scientific community focused on Patagonian cryosphere have been conducted so far. To fill this gap, we analyzed the metadata associated to 305 articles compiled from the Web of Science database following a bibliometric approach covering the period between 1976 and 2020. Our results point to an irregular but net increase on the number of contributions on Patagonian (paleo)glaciers. Mass balance analyses based on satellite data of present-day glaciers and the reconstruction of past glacier activity by dating glacial landforms formed during the Last Glacial Termination, were the most addressed topics during the analyzed period. Patagonian (paleo)glacier studies are mostly published in generic Earth Sciences publications, followed by Quaternary and glaciological journals. Most of the studies were led by scientists from the United Kingdom, followed by Chile, Argentina and United States. In terms of collaborations, these studies can be divided into two main clusters, one composed by researchers from United States, Chile and Argentina institutions, and another mostly composed by British researchers. So far, the most prolific authors are nearly equally distributed in nationality, yet gender inclusion and international collaborations are still caveats that must be solved. Even though our query on the Web of Science missed highly influential (so-called) grey literature, such as local scientific journals and technical reports, the reviewed scientific literature unambiguously indicates that Patagonia is a privileged location for (paleo)glaciers studies worldwide and that it will continue offering vast opportunities to tackle critical questions related to global cryosphere and past-to-present climate changes. • Patagonia is a privilege site for studying present and past glacier dynamics and the evolution of climate changes at hemispheric and global scale. • Glacier dynamics during the 20th century and and the Last Glacial Termination are the most common topics addressed in past decades in the WOS. • Patagonian (paleo)glacier studies has contributed to the development or improvement of diverse analytical techniques. • United Kingdom, United States, Chile and Argentina produced the largest number of WOS-listed papers on (paleo)glaciers in past decades. • The related scientific community is fairly heterogeneous. Remote sensing techniques are frequently applied for the surveying of remote areas, where the use of conventional surveying techniques remains difficult and impracticable. In this paper, we focus on one of the remote glacier areas, namely the Tyndall Glacier area in the Southern Patagonian Icefield in Chile. Based on optical remote sensing data in the form of multi-spectral Sentinel-2 imagery, we analyze the extent of different snow and ice classes on the surface of the glacier by means of pixel-wise classification. Our study comprises three main steps: (1) Labeled Sentinel-2 compliant data are obtained from theoretical spectral reflectance curves, as there are no training data available for the investigated area; (2) Four different classification approaches are used and compared in their ability to identify the defined five snow and ice types, thereof two unsupervised approaches (k-means clustering and rule-based classification via snow and ice indices) and two supervised approaches (Linear Discriminant Analysis and Random Forest classifier); (3) We first focus on the pixel-wise classification of Sentinel-2 imagery, and we then use the best-performing approach for a multi-temporal analysis of the Tyndall Glacier area. While the achieved classification results reveal that all of the used classification approaches are suitable for detecting different snow and ice classes on the glacier surface, the multi-temporal analysis clearly reveals the seasonal development of the glacier. The change of snow and ice types on the glacier surface is evident, especially between the end of ablation season (April) and the end of accumulation season (September) in Southern Chile. Abstract: This paper presents an updated, extensive review of glacier fluctuations during the past 1000years in the extratropical Andes of South America between ca. 17° and 55°S. Given the variety of environmental conditions and evidence available for glacier fluctuations across this wide latitudinal range, regional accounts are given for the Desert Andes (∼17°–31°S), the Andes of central Chile and Argentina (31°–36°S), and the North (36°–45°S) and South (45°–55°S) Patagonian Andes. The techniques, dating limitations, and interpretations of the glacier records along this transect are also discussed. Information on glacier fluctuations in the Desert Andes is limited to the 20th century. Documentation on past glacier variations is more abundant in the Central Chilean-Argentinean Andes, but the number of chronologies dealing with glacier fluctuations prior to the 1900s is also limited. Most records indicate that glaciers were generally more extensive prior to the 20th century, with dates of maximum expansion ranging from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The number and extent of glaciers increase significantly in the Patagonian region, where the evidence available for dating glacier variations during the past centuries is more abundant and the dating control for glacier events is generally better than in the northern parts of the study area. For some Patagonian glaciers, maximum Little Ice Age (LIA) or post-LIA advances have been precisely dated by dendro-geomorphological determinations or in situ measurements. However, for most sites, the evidence available is still preliminary and there is considerable variability in the extent and timing of events related to the maximum LIA expansion identified in most areas between the 16th and 19th centuries. Evidence is starting to appear at a growing number of sites for glacier advances during the first half of the past millennium. These events were generally less extensive than the LIA maximum pulses. Despite the occurrence of several post-LIA readvances over the past 100–110years, most areas in the Andes of extratropical South America have experienced a general pattern of glacier recession and significant ice mass losses. The differences in the glacier histories observed at local and regional scales probably reflect the inherent limitations associated with the glacier records and/or the dating techniques used in each case together with the varying dominance of precipitation, temperature and other climatic and non-climatic factors on glacier mass balance and glacier dynamics. These differences indicate that the late Holocene glacier history of southern South America is more complex than commonly assumed. The evidence discussed in this study highlights not only the immense potential for glaciological studies of this region but also a significant need for an increased number of detailed, well-dated records of glacier fluctuations. This paper presents evidence for a neotectonic influence on Late Pleistocene/Holocene records of environmental change in the southern Strait of Magellan. We concentrate on one site, Puerto del Hambre, a key location for reconstructing palaeoenvironmental change in southernmost South America. We report geomorphological, structural geological, seismic and topographic data that all show the site has been affected by postglacial faulting. There is also indirect evidence from the site stratigraphy that the site has been displaced. Also, recent faulting explains some of the puzzles associated with interpretation of the palaeoenvironmental record at Puerto del Hambre. The implication of this work is that neotectonic faulting had a pervasive influence in the southern part of the Strait of Magellan and southernmost Tierra del Fuego, and thus affects glacial or sea level reconstructions in the area. Reconstructing the evolution of the glacial landscape of the semi-arid Andes (32°–34° S) during phases of Holocene deglaciation is key to understand the responses of the cryosphere during warmer periods such as the current one. Despite having geomorphological records with good degrees of preservation, few studies have addressed the changes of the Andes during the glacial-paraglacial transition. In this paper, we investigate and compare geomorphological mappings of four glacial sub-basins of the central Andes of Chile: Juncal Norte (32° S, glacier terminus at ~ 3000 m asl.), Loma Larga (33° S, terminus at ~ 3000 m asl.), Nieves Negras (33° S, terminus at ~ 3000 m asl.), and Universidad (34° S, terminus at ~ 2500 m asl.). The ablation zones of Loma Larga and Nieves Negras glaciers have a mantle of debris, which suggests a process of ablation in situ rather than retreat of the glacier tongue. Both glaciers have a morphology of internal collapse in their debris-covered section. On the other hand, Juncal Norte and Universidad glaciers both have lateral moraines with ice cores, where the differential ablation has triggered backwasting and downwasting processes. The presence of ice-cored lateral moraines indicates greater activity of processes in the lateral sections. The Universidad glacier is characterized by two branches feeding the glacier tongue which shows a prominent medial moraine.For the first time in this part of the Andes, we used 36Cl terrestrial cosmogenic nuclides (TCN) for dating deglaciation geomorphology. We complement our 36Cl data with 14C ages that suggest that glaciers advanced before ~2500 and then before ~850/1000 years BP.The combination of the geomorphology and the geochronology in the different proglacial areas allows the analysis of the deglaciation history and related processes. Identifying how ablation occurs in semi-arid mountain environments is important to assess the behaviour of ice under changing climatic conditions and its preservation under a cover of debris.
