Lineament mapping is a very important step in geological studies and mineral exploration, with the evolution of remote sensing, processing methods as well as the availability of several optical and radar satellite data, lineaments can be detected without using traditional methods. The objective of this work is to recommend the most suitable data for lineaments to be used in the field of geological science, by comparing the performance of three different RADAR data, namely ALOS PALSAR (The Advanced Land Observing Satellite Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar), Radarsat-1 and Sentinel-1 for automatic lineament extraction using a combination of edge detection and line linking algorithms. The methodology consists to link between the length, number, orientation and density of lineaments with surface characteristics such as the slope, faults, lithology, discontinuities and mineral veins. The results obtained show that the extracted lineaments from Sentinel-1 VH polarization have a better correlation with geological units, tectonic system direction, as well as shading and slope maps, which is due to the effectiveness of VH polarization, which is independent of soil properties compared to the other polarizations that have shown an overestimation of the lineaments. In this article, we propose a novel method utilizing iterative semidefinite relaxation for geolocation of stationary uncooperative radars. In our scenario, the geolocation is to be performed in a receiver located on a moving platform. The proposed method uses frequency measurements that are Doppler-shifted due to the platform motion. First, constructed nonconvex maximum likelihood cost function for position estimation is relaxed to a convex optimization problem by applying linearization to range variables. Then, at each iteration of the method, carrier frequency and position of the radar are estimated jointly. Conducted experiments show that a few iterations are enough for convergence to accurate estimates. The proposed method is computationally less expensive compared to traditional techniques, which require extensive grid search procedures in either position or carrier frequency parameter space. In the experiments, the performance of the proposed method is compared to the state-of-the-art techniques and the Cramer–Rao lower bound (CRLB). It is observed that the proposed method attains the CRLB at low noise levels while still providing accurate solutions at high noise cases. Furthermore, it is also seen that platform-radar geometry has an impact on the proposed method's performance. If the radar lies in the convex hull of the receiver path, the proposed method performs significantly better due to improvement in the linearization of range values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Terrestrial simulations for crewed missions are critically important for testing technologies and improving methods and procedures for future robotic and human planetary exploration. In February 2018, AMADEE-18 simulated a mission to Mars in the Dhofar region of Oman. During the mission, a field crew coordinated by the Österreichisches Weltraum Forum (OeWF) accomplished several experiments in the fields of astrobiology, space physiology and medicine, geology, and geophysics. Within the scientific payload of AMADEE-18, ScanMars provided geophysical radar imaging of the subsurface at the simulated landing site and was operated by analog astronauts wearing spacesuits during extra-vehicular activities. The analog astronauts were trained to operate a ground-penetrating radar instrument that transmits and then collects radio waves carrying information about the geological setting of the first few meters of the subsurface. The data presented in this work show signal returns from structures down to 4 m depth, associated with the geology of the investigated rocks. Integrating radar data and the analog astronauts' observations of the geology at the surface, it was possible to identify the contact between shallow sediments and bedrock, the local occurrence of conductive soils, and the presence of pebbly materials in the shallow subsurface, which together describe the geology of recent loose sediments overlying an older deformed bedrock. The results obtained by ScanMars confirm that subsurface radar sounding at martian landing sites is key for the geological characterization at shallow depths. The geologic model of the subsurface can be used as the basis for reconstructing palaeoenvironments and paleo-habitats, thus assisting scientific investigations looking for traces of present or past life on the Red Planet. Simulation of radar sounder (RS) data is important for understanding the radar response of subsurface features to facilitate the interpretation of the real data. Conventional electromagnetic simulators require the definition of complex geoelectrical models of the investigated targets. They also involve time-complex solutions of Maxwell’s equations for computing the received electric field, which leads to very high computation time. Furthermore, the simulated radargrams are often not realistic as it is very difficult to model all the variables involved in the data acquisition. In this paper, we propose a novel simulation approach that exploits the data available from existing RSs in geologically analogous terrains, to produce realistic simulations of the investigated RS target. This simulation strategy is based on minimizing the difference between the analog and the investigated acquisition scenarios. This is done by applying a series of corrections, which depend on the relation between the radargram characteristics and the physical variables describing the acquisition process. The aim is to produce radargrams that resemble the investigated scenario in terms of the echo magnitude, bandwidth, range resolution, and along-track resolution. Experimental results present three case studies for different possibilities of the analog and the investigated scenarios. The validation of the simulated radargrams with actual data demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Finally, we also present a real application of this approach for the simulation of Radar for Icy Moon Exploration (RIME) radargrams for a combination of instrument and target parameters, using the SHAllow RADar (SHARAD) radargram acquired over the geological analog of a selected RIME target. The implementation of ground-based geophysical methods for the detection of human burials has become increasingly common in archaeological fieldwork. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) appears to be a useful instrument for cemetery investigations, but the effectiveness of equipment varies by region due to soil differences and other environmental factors. Few region-specific examples are available for comparative purposes, which presents problems for the interpretation of remote sensing data. Here, we present GPR data from three historic cemeteries in southern Illinois to illustrate the effectiveness of this method for burial identification. Using a scoring system developed for detecting interments, our results indicate that two-thirds of known burials in the sample produced a signal that allowed for positive identification. The implications of this study suggest that regional soil types and geology must be accounted for when utilizing GPR; however, the potential exists to remotely detect interments despite challenging factors. The radar images of the eastern part of the Azov and Black seas received from the ENVISAT satellite in the general (2009-2011) and detailed (2003) surveys are analyzed. The relationship between the surface hydrocarbon seeps and the activity of underwater geological objects (mud volcanoes and diapirs) in shallow and deep sea areas is revealed on the basis of the complex analysis of satellite radar data and geological and geophysical information using the geoinformation system. The complex analysis of information at different levels of marine and geological environment taking account of morphological features of geological objects in deep sea areas enabled to explain the forms of oil seeps on the sea surface. The estimates are given of some characteristics of hydrocarbon seep sources such as the period of activity and the area of oil seeps. The typical deciphering indications for identifying the natural oil seeps represented on radar images and their differences from anthropogenic pollution and other slick-forming phenomena are presented and systematized. Abstract: A large, circular marking ∼1800km across is seen in near-infrared images of Titan. The feature is centered at 10°S, 120°W on Titan, encompasses much of Titan’s western Xanadu region, and has an off-center, quasi-circular, inner margin about 700km across, with lobate outer margins extending 200–500km from the inner margin. On the feature’s southern flank is Tui Regio, an area that has very high reflectivity at 5μm, and is hypothesized to exhibit geologically recent cryovolcanic flows (Barnes, J.W. et al. [2006]. Geophys. Res. Lett. 33), similar to flows seen in Hotei Regio, a cryovolcanic area whose morphology may be controlled by pre-existing, crustal fractures resulting from an ancient impact (Soderblom, L.A. et al. [2009]. Icarus, 204). The spectral reflectivity of the large, circular feature is quite different than that of its surroundings, making it compositionally distinct, and radar measurements of its topography, brightness temperature and volume scattering also suggest that the feature is quite distinct from its surroundings. These and several other lines of evidence, in addition to the feature’s morphology, suggest that it may occupy the site of an ancient impact. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In the desert country of Oman, available water resources are scarce and scattered. In most locations where water can be accessed, this resource is harnessed by oases planted to date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) and other crops. So far, little is known about the site-specific conditions determining the existence, size and type of these oases. Remote sensing and image processing techniques were used to locate oases, to characterize the sites according to their topographic, hydrologic and geologic characteristics and to develop a typology of oases in northern Oman. To derive oasis positions, we calculated the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) of Landsat images covering all of northern Oman, subtracted a regional average NDVI, averaged the resulting grid over 3×3 pixels and extracted the brightest of five classes determined by a natural breaks algorithm. A buffer of six pixels was added to the oases and the vegetated area as determined by the NDVI was summarized for these polygons. The oasis detection procedure was validated using Google Earth Pro®. Topographic information was derived from data of the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), complemented by digitized Russian military maps, from which mean elevations and elevation range above the oases within a buffer of 2 km were extracted. Water contributing upslope area and distance to streams with catchments of 10 km2 and 100 km2 were derived from the same elevation model. All geologic formations of northern Oman were assigned to one of 7 groups and tested for influence on vegetation surrounding them. Four such geologic settings were identified and described by categorical variables. All input parameters were used to define oasis types based on cluster analysis. Our algorithm detected 2663 oases in northern Oman, of which 2428 had vegetated areas of more than 0.4 ha, the minimum size for reliable detection. The oases were subdivided into six groups. ‘Plain Oases’ (49% of all oases) lie mostly in the plains east and west of the mountains, and are fed by groundwater flow in Quaternary sediments. ‘Foothill Oases’ (46%) are scattered over the foothills, where they draw their water from groundwater flow that is channeled by rock formations. ‘Mountain Oases’ (3%) and ‘Kawr Oases’ (0.5%) lie in the mountains, close to an unconform boundary between limestones and confining rocks. ‘Drainage Oases’ (0.3%) are the largest oases in northern Oman. They lie close to a drainage channel, which drains the entire area west of the mountains. Finally, ‘Urban Oases’ (1.7%) consist of parks and sporting facilities, which do not lie in conclusive hydrologic settings. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The improved ground resolution of state-of-the-art synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors suggests utilizing SAR data for the analysis of urban areas. The appearance of buildings in SAR or interferometric SAR (InSAR) data is characterized by the consequences of the inherent oblique scene illumination, such as layover, occlusion by radar shadow, and multipath signal propagation. Therefore, particularly in dense built-up areas, building reconstruction is often impossible from a single SAR or InSAR measurement alone. But, the reconstruction quality can be significantly improved by a combined analysis of multi-aspect data. In this paper, two approaches are proposed to detect and reconstruct buildings of different size from multi-aspect high-resolution InSAR data sets. Both approaches focus on the recognition of buildings supported by knowledge-based analysis considering the mentioned SAR-specific effects observed in urban areas. Building features are extracted independently for each direction from the magnitude and phase information of the interferometric data. Initial primitives are segmented and afterward projected from slant-range into the world coordinate system. From the fused set of primitives of both flight directions, building hypotheses are generated. The first approach exploits the frequently observed lines of bright double-bounce scattering, which are used for building reconstruction in residential districts. In the case of larger buildings, such as industrial halls, often additional features of roof and façade elements are visible. Therefore, in a second approach, extended buildings are extracted by grouping primitives of different kinds. The two approaches are demonstrated in an urban environment for an InSAR data set, which has spatial resolution of about 30 cm and was taken from two orthogonal flight directions. In this paper, a novel method is proposed for retrieving 3-D topography of the ground surface by using a single-antenna squint-mode airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR). The main idea of the method is based on the fact that the spatial 3-D location of a target can be found as the intersection of the range sphere, the Doppler cone, and the elevation plane of the antenna pattern. An accurate estimation of the Doppler centroid for each resolution cell is required to realize this method. Experimental results obtained with a Ku-band airborne SAR are presented. In this paper, we consider landmine detection using ultrawideband synthetic aperture radar, where the two main challenges are feature extraction and discriminator design. The space-wavenumber processing is proposed to retrieve the frequency- and aspect-angle-dependent scattering features of suspected objects. In order to reduce the dimensionality of the input feature vector for a discriminator, the sequential forward floating selection method is used to choose efficient features. Based on the obtained feature vector, a fuzzy hypersphere support vector machine is designed to deal with the problem of detecting landmines in an unconstrained environment. Inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) images are frequently used in target classification and recognition applications. Some classifiers often require features that can be more easily obtained by extracting scattering centers from ISAR data rather than by reconstructing ISAR images. An available method for scattering center extraction, namely, the CLEAN technique, was proposed in a recent paper by Yang et al. In this paper, an improvement of this CLEAN technique is proposed that introduces a new method for detecting scattering centers. The proposed technique is based on a Gaussianity test, and its effectiveness is first theoretically proven and then tested on real data. A dual-polarization radar system operating in simultaneous transmission mode of both horizontal and vertical polarization states is a viable implementation if only copolar measurements are needed. The simultaneous transmission of horizontal and vertical polarizations results in an arbitrary elliptical polarization state transmitted, whereas the reception states in horizontal and vertical polarizations are neither copolar nor cross-polar to the transmitted state. Because of this, it is often referred as the hybrid mode. Previous studies have shown that the hybrid mode in the linear horizontal and vertical polarization basis is capable of providing measurements similar to the alternate transmission mode for most measurement conditions. These findings are based on the assumption of perfect sensing systems. This paper presents the results of radar system limitations on hybrid mode measurements that in turn are converted to system requirements. A method for segmentation and classification of Baltic Sea ice synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, based on pulse-coupled neural networks (PCNN5), is presented. Also, automated training, which is based on decomposing the total pixel value distribution into a mixture of class distributions, is presented and discussed. The algorithms have been trained and tested using logarithmic scale Radarsat-1 ScanSAR Wide mode images over the Baltic Sea ice. Before the decomposition into mixture of class distributions, an incidence angle correction, specifically designed for these Baltic Sea ice SAR images, is applied. Because the data distributions in the uniform areas of these images are very close to Gaussian distributions, the data are decomposed into a mixture of Gaussian distributions, using the Expectation-Maximazation algorithm. Only uniform image areas are used in the decomposition phase. The mixture of distributions is compared to the distributions of the Baltic Sea ice classes, based on earlier scatterometer measurements and visual video interpretations of the sea ice classes. The parameter values for the PCNN segmentation are defined based on this mixture of distributions. The PCNN segmentation results are also compared to the operational sea ice information of digitized ice charts and to visual interpretation of the sea ice class. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) and high-resolution shallow reflection seismic surveying were carried out to investigate the subsurface geology in and around the Uemachi Fault zone in the Yamato River area, Osaka, Japan. Shallow drilling in the area showed a major displacement event during the middle Pleistocene. The main Uemachi Fault plane could be clearly imaged on the seismic section, except for the most shallow 200 m. Several shallow normal fault planes with less displacement could be detected on both sides of the fault plane. GPR profiles confirmed the presence of several shallow normal faults within the area near the fault zone. These shallow faults could be followed in all of the GPR profiles crossing the fault zone. The integration of seismic section, GPR profiles and drilling data led to a conceptual model that explains the evolution of the Uemachi Fault system. The proposed model suggests the occurrence of several cycles of small vertical displacement along the deep part of the fault plane caused by the regional east–west compressional stress. The ductile nature of the shallow sedimentary cover and the absence of confining pressure in the shallow part allow for a considerable amount of plastic bending before failing in the shallow sedimentary layers. This bending generates stretching force within the shallow sedimentary cover, which in time, along with gravitational force, gives rise to the formation of the swarm of normal faults within the shallow layers near the fault zone. Some of the detected faults extend to a depth of less than 3 m below the ground surface, suggesting that the last tectonic activity along the fault plane may have occurred recently. Using orbital imaging radar, we detected a double circular structure, located in the southeastern part of the Libyan Desert, which is partially hidden under sandy sediments. Fieldwork confirmed it to be an unknown double impact crater, each crater having a diameter of about 10 km, younger than 140 Ma. Ground-based interferometric radar systems have numerous environmental monitoring applications in geoscience. Development of a relatively simple ground-based interferometric real-aperture FMCW radar (GB-InRAR) system that can be readily deployed in field without an established set of corner reflectors will meet the present and future need for real-time monitoring of the expected increased number of geohazard events due to climate changes. Several effects affect electromagnetic waves and limit the measurement accuracy, and a careful analysis of the setup of the deployed radar system in field is essential to achieve adequate results. In this paper, we present radar measurement of a moving square trihedral corner reflector from experiments conducted in both the field and laboratory, and assess the error sources with focus on the geometry, hardware and environmental effects on interferometric and differential interferometric measurements. A theoretical model is implemented to assess deviations between theory and measurements. The main observed effects are variations in radio refractivity, multipath interference and inter-reflector interference. Measurement error due to radar hardware and the environment are analyzed, as well as how the geometry of the measurement setup affects the nominal range-cell extent. It is found that for this experiment the deviation between interferometry and differential interferometry is mainly due to variations in the radio refractivity, and temperature-induced changes in the electrical length of the microwave cables. The results show that with careful design and analysis of radar parameters and radar system geometry the measurement accuracy of a GB-InRAR system without the use of deployed corner reflectors is comparable to the accuracy of differential interferometric measurements. A GB-InRAR system can therefore be used during sudden geo-hazard events without established corner reflector infrastructure, and the results are also valid for other high-precision interferometric radar systems.
