This study investigates the potential of laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA‐ICP‐MS) U‐Pb dating for carbonate nodules in the Late Triassic Ischigualasto Formation of northwestern Argentina. We establish a fully characterized paragenetic sequence to guide the analysis of three pedogenic carbonates and compare the U‐Pb ages with published geochronology from volcanic ashes within the sedimentary succession. Our findings demonstrate the importance of interpreting U‐Pb data within a well‐defined paragenetic framework for accurate age interpretation of pedogenic carbonates. We observe variations in U‐Pb isotopic signatures across different generations of carbonate precipitates and identify syn‐pedogenic and early burial calcite cements as most suitable for precise dating. Respectively, these two calcite cements are interpreted as microcodium and crack‐lining calcite cements formed early in the paragenetic sequence during pedogenesis to early burial of the paleosols as they transitioned from the unsaturated vadose to saturated phreatic zone below the water table. The U‐Pb ages obtained from the carbonate nodules agree with the radioisotopic ages of volcanic ashes, supporting the validity of our dating strategy. These results contribute to advancing U‐Pb carbonate geochronology and highlight its increased potential for dating sedimentary records in the terrestrial realm. Future research should focus on replicating similar work on different carbonate nodules within the Ischigualasto Fm and expanding the application of LA‐ICP‐MS U‐Pb dating to other carbonate‐bearing formations, especially in successions with limited absolute ages or where volcanic ashes are sparse or absent. Plain Language Summary: Carbonate minerals that formed in fossil soils can provide valuable insights into past physical, biological, and chemical processes on Earth's surface. Despite their significance in reconstructing ancient climates and environments, determining the age of these fossil soils via uranium‐to‐lead dating has proven challenging. This difficulty arises from factors associated with soil carbonate minerals, including low uranium content, high lead content, complex formation chemistry, multiple formation episodes (generations), and potential for post‐formation chemical alteration. To address these issues, we first identified the order in which carbonate minerals formed within three samples from the Late Triassic Ischigualasto Formation of Argentina. Then, we dated each generation within each sample and compared the results to identify and understand the most optimal sample locations for dating. Analysis of our data shows that carbonate minerals formed due to biological processes near the surface as well as during the burial and submersion of the fossil soils below the water table are the most suitable for dating and approximate the timing of soil formation. Importantly, the ages from these soil carbonate samples align with ages from volcanic ashes found within the Ischigualasto Formation, thus validating our results and the potential to apply our strategy in other locations. In this paper new geochemical, geochronological and isotopic Lu–Hf data from the Siempre Amigos Hills (SA), western Tandilia, Argentina, is presented. Outcrops in this small area include representative lithologies of the basement Río de la Plata craton (RPC) known as Tandilia Terrane. The new geochemical data characterize a heterogeneous Paleoproterozoic crust with a similar U–Pb SIMS magmatic age (~2.1 Ga) represented by a suite of mafic (amphibolites, charnockitic granulites), intermediate and felsic compositions (diorites, granodiorites and granitic gneisses), as well as intrusive granitic rocks (with Neoproterozoic age of ~652 Ma in zircon). Geochemical features suggest processes of magmatic differentiation from a mafic igneous protolith associated with the 'Camboriu orogeny' of the Trans-Amazonian–Eburnean cycle. Some amphibolites may represent sanukitoid magmas similar to those formed at the Archean-Proterozoic transition. This paper examines the hypothesis of a sanukitoid precursor for RPC Rhyacian magmatism. The potassic and calc-alkaline character of magmatic series, together with negative Nb–Ta–Ti anomalies and REE patterns, are compatible with classical modern subduction-related magmas. Precise Lu–Hf analyses of zircons collected from a granodiorite and a gneiss indicate a predominantly juvenile source (+εHf), with minor crustal recycling (-εHf). An inheritance age is recorded in a single Neoarchaean zircon core from a granodiorite (2771 ± 15 Ma), similar to calculated maximum Hf T DM (2.8 Ga). Considering the new available data from this region of the RPC, a sustainable petrogenetic model is proposed to explain the presence of geochemical and isotopic evidence of sanukitoid magmatism which may have occurred after 2.7 Ga, which seems to constitute a magmatic series which is a precursor to the development of the Rhyacian magmatic arc in the Tandilia Terrane. Medium-to high-grade metamorphic conditions probably resulted from Paleoproterozoic subduction followed by the intrusion of huge volumes of Rhyacian calc-alkaline magmatism. This paper presents a detailed geological map at the 1:20,000 scale of the Tocomar basin in the Central Puna (north-western Argentina), which extends over an area of about 80 km2 and displays the spatial distribution of the Quaternary deposits and the structures that cover the Ordovician basement and the Tertiary sedimentary and volcanic units. The new dataset includes litho-facies descriptions, stratigraphic and structural data and new 234U/230Th ages for travertine rocks. The new reconstructed stratigraphic framework, along with the structural analysis, has revealed the complex evolution of a small extensional basin including a period of prolonged volcanic activity with different eruptive centres and styles. The geological map improves the knowledge of the geology of the Tocomar basin and the local interplay between orogen-parallel thrusts and orogen-oblique fault systems. This contribution represents a fundamental support for in depth research and also for encouraging geothermal exploration and exploitation in the Puna Plateau region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The analysis of major and trace elements in zoned minerals is useful for deciphering parts of the tectonothermal evolution of polymetamorphic tarrain. We applied this approach to the Maz Metasedimentary Series in Western Sierras Pampeanas of Argentina, where polymetamorphism resulted in the overprinting of a Grenvillian basement (the Maz Complex) during the pervasive Rinconada tectonic phase of the Famatinian orogeny. The older metamorphism (M1) is assigned to the youngest Grenvillian metamorphic event recognized in this basement at c. 1035 Ma, whereas the Rinconada metamorphism (M2) was Silurian to early Devonian, essentially between 440 and 410 Ma. The latter resulted from oceanward migration of the orogenic front relative to earlier late Cambrian to Ordovician (490–470 Ma) tectonic phases of the Famatinian orogeny. The M1 and M2 metamorphic events have been recognized in a staurolite‐garnet schist from the Maz Metasedimentary Series. Most metamorphic minerals from this rock were formed during the M2 event which was of the Barrovian type (±kyanite). Part of the metamorphic P–T evolution is recorded in the complex compositional zoning of garnet porphyroblasts. Three types of garnet were identified based on texture and chemistry, including trace elements (REEs). Phase equilibrium analysis, compositional isopleth, and multi‐equilibrium thermobarometry were applied in order to establish the P–T history. M1 is represented by preservation of Grt1 ± Kfs ± Sil, with peak P–T condition of 790°C and 5.2 kbar, that is, granulite facies. This early metamorphic event was related to a deformational D1 episode represented by a relict S1 foliation. The latter is preserved as aligned inclusions in staurolite porphyroblasts and as relics of an older crenulated foliation in microlithons from the matrix. M2 followed a clockwise P–T path with three mineral growth stages. The earliest occurred at ~585°C and ~8.7 kbar and is represented by Grt2 ± St1 ± Bt1 + Qz. Grt2 was partially coeval with growth of St1, which was stable at ~625°C and 9.0 kbar. Grt2 + St1 are syn‐kinematic to the main S2 foliation (D2 episode). Subsequently, decompression (D3) started as St2 (+ Bt2 + Ms1 + Qz + Pl) crystallized, and garnet was partially consumed at ~612–620°C and ~7.3–7.7 kbar. St3 + Grt3 crystallized at ~608°C and ~6.8 kbar at the end of D3. Increasing P–T conditions during the earlier M2 growth stage suggest burial of the Maz Metasedimentary Series, probably linked to tectonic thickening by underthrusting (tectonic phase D2). Peak metamorphic conditions were attained during thrust stacking. The tectonic phase (D2) was responsible for the main S2 foliation, which was penetrative at all scales. The nearly isothermal decompression path is compatible with exhumation, probably resulting from extension along discrete shear zones (tectonic phase D3) that produced a mylonitic foliation S3. Archaeological radiocarbon databases are being increasingly used as a proxy of past demographic trends. In this paper we compile and analyze an extensive database of paleoecological information and 14 C dates from archaeological sites in northwestern Patagonia (Argentina, South America). On this basis, we assess the regional distribution of human populations since the late Pleistocene, and their relation with the evolution of Patagonian climate and landscapes. We explore the spatial and temporal distribution of evidence and discuss sampling biases affecting the record in different ecological contexts. The analysis is set in the frame of three main ecological regions that have implications for human subsistence: Andean forest, grass steppe, and shrub steppe. The intensity of the archaeological signal differs among these regions through time, being stronger and more homogeneous in the grass steppe. In the Andean forest and the shrub steppe the signal is weaker and even absent during short periods of the middle Holocene. We suggest likely sampling biases contributing to these tendencies, since these three regions present variable research cover and intensity. On the other hand, we also suggest that these differences may reflect variations in the intensity of human occupation, in favor of more attractive environments for hunting (i.e., areas where guanaco are generally more abundant). This macro-regional synthesis of the paleoecology and archaeology of northwestern Patagonia provides a platform for developing future oriented research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The main goal of this paper is to analyze the late Quaternary alluvial record of the Andean piedmont between 33° and 34°S (Mendoza, Argentina) reconstructing the prevailing paleoenvironmental conditions and discussing their regional significance. The analysis was carried out along the outcrops of Arroyo La Estacada and its tributary Arroyo Anchayuyo, complementary sections were described at Arroyo Grande and Arroyo Yaucha. The sedimentological, stratigraphical and geochronological (radiocarbon and OSL dating) results as well as the paleoenvironmental interpretation are presented and discussed on the basis of the geomorphological units identified at the piedmont fluvial systems. Late Quaternary deposits of Arroyo La Estacada compose three main geomorphological units consisting of an extensive aggradational plain, a fill terrace and the present floodplain -which is not analyzed in this contribution-. At the aggradational plain a distal alluvial fan lithofacial association was determined, mainly related to overbank sheet fluid overflows and probably temporary inactive channels of sandy-like braided streams between ∼50 ka BP and the early Holocene. The mid-late Holocene fining upward alluvial sequence of the fill terrace corresponds to a sinuous fluvial system lithofacial association. The mid-to late Holocene alluvial sequence exposed at Arroyo Grande banks shows a fining upward sequence probably related to a sinuous fluvial system lithofacial association. Finally, in the Arroyo Yaucha the upper and lower terraces analyzed in this study record a Late Glacial and Holocene fining upward alluvial sequence of a sinuous fluvial system lithofacial association. The late Pleistocene – early Holocene dynamic of the Andean piedmont documents an interval of alluvial aggradation characterized by the occurrence of sandy systems similar to braided rivers in the distal fan environments. The mid-late Holocene is marked by aggradation in sinuous fluvial systems and by two major episodes of degradation registered across the fluvial systems of the study area. This paleoenvironmental reconstruction allowed us to propose an evolutionary scheme and chronology of the major fluvial landscape landforms contributing to the general understanding of the sedimentological and geomorphological dynamic during the late Quaternary. Abstract: This paper evaluates the chronology of the last glacial cycle and deglaciation in the Lago Pueyrredón valley of central Patagonia, 47.5° S, Argentina. The valley was a major outlet of the former Patagonian Ice Sheet and the moraines that record its fluctuations are an important proxy record of climate change in southern South America. Such moraines are well-preserved in the Lago Pueyrredón valley owing in part to the semi-arid environment east of the mountain front. Here, we provide the first direct chronology for the age of the “Rio Blanco” moraine system by utilizing cosmogenic-nuclide surface exposure ages. Boulders on the moraines give 10Be exposure ages that indicate the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) maximum extent occurred by 27–25ka. Subsequent advances occurred at 23–22ka, 20–18ka, and ca. 18–17ka. Initial deglaciation began after ca. 18–17ka and was interrupted as evidenced by the Lago Columna moraines up-valley. Subsequently the outlet glaciers occupying both the Lago Pueyrredón basin (Chilean name: Lago Cochrane) and the Lago Buenos Aires basin (Chilean name: Lago General Carrera) to the north, rapidly retreated more than 80km at around 16.5–15ka. The timing of the LGM maximum extent and the onset of deglaciation occurred broadly synchronously throughout Patagonia. Deglaciation resulted in a series of interconnected glacier-dammed lakes in the region that initially drained toward the Atlantic Ocean and later drained to the Pacific Ocean as a consequence of disintegrating ice in the Andes. Abstract: This paper documents the occurrence of the Little Ice Age (LIA) in the El Azufre and El Peñón glaciers at 35°S and in the Las Choicas and Las Damas glaciers at 34°55′S in the headwaters of the Rio Grande basin in the Central Andes of Argentina. Moraine morphology, stratigraphic relationships, radiocarbon ages obtained from peat on these glacial deposits and the proximity to the active glaciers enabled us to reconstruct the LIA advance in this area. The LIA maximum advance occurred between cal. yr 1550 and 1720 AD, and a readvance occurred around cal. yr 1830 AD. In addition, glacier fluctuations of the Las Vacas and Güssfeltd glaciers (33°S) and El Peñón and El Azufre glaciers were documented from the end of the 19th century to the present based on historical and aerial photographs, and satellite images. The glaciers showed a marked retreat during 1894–2007. Minor readvances occurred in the 1980s and 1990s, which could be related with strong warm ENSO events during these decades. Interactions between human societies and the environment that they inhabit have been a controversial topic in archaeology for at least the past fifty years. Currently, modern theoretical approaches take this subject as a key issue in their research agenda. This paper presents a review of the main outcomes of several archaeological and multidisciplinary South American projects related to this theme. The case-studies discussed here are all located within arid settings, and can be grouped into three broad geographic areas: Puna (or Altiplano) of northwestern Argentina, Cuyo (west-central Argentina), and southern Patagonia. These regions cover a wide latitudinal range extending from 22° to 52° S. They were selected for comparison due to environmental similarities, and a common record of past climate impacts mainly related to the Medieval Climatic Anomaly (MCA) and the Little Ice Age (LIA). Although the impacts of these climatic changes were locally heterogeneous in their intensity and the quality of the available information is regionally variable, they provide a base-line for comparison and supra-regional integration. The integration of archaeological and palaeoenvironmental data on this broad supra-regional spatial scale allows us to identify interesting historical trajectories associated with particular time periods. As an example, there are some spatial rearrangements of large populations during the MCA, in the three areas. Additionally, there are variable patterns in the changes associated with the different social contexts that impose specific demographic and economic constraints. Finally, this study sets the basis for new questions and provides a guide to the methodological and theoretical issues that we need to address in order to answer them. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper presents an updated, extensive review of glacier fluctuations during the past 1000years in the extratropical Andes of South America between ca. 17° and 55°S. Given the variety of environmental conditions and evidence available for glacier fluctuations across this wide latitudinal range, regional accounts are given for the Desert Andes (∼17°–31°S), the Andes of central Chile and Argentina (31°–36°S), and the North (36°–45°S) and South (45°–55°S) Patagonian Andes. The techniques, dating limitations, and interpretations of the glacier records along this transect are also discussed. Information on glacier fluctuations in the Desert Andes is limited to the 20th century. Documentation on past glacier variations is more abundant in the Central Chilean-Argentinean Andes, but the number of chronologies dealing with glacier fluctuations prior to the 1900s is also limited. Most records indicate that glaciers were generally more extensive prior to the 20th century, with dates of maximum expansion ranging from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The number and extent of glaciers increase significantly in the Patagonian region, where the evidence available for dating glacier variations during the past centuries is more abundant and the dating control for glacier events is generally better than in the northern parts of the study area. For some Patagonian glaciers, maximum Little Ice Age (LIA) or post-LIA advances have been precisely dated by dendro-geomorphological determinations or in situ measurements. However, for most sites, the evidence available is still preliminary and there is considerable variability in the extent and timing of events related to the maximum LIA expansion identified in most areas between the 16th and 19th centuries. Evidence is starting to appear at a growing number of sites for glacier advances during the first half of the past millennium. These events were generally less extensive than the LIA maximum pulses. Despite the occurrence of several post-LIA readvances over the past 100–110years, most areas in the Andes of extratropical South America have experienced a general pattern of glacier recession and significant ice mass losses. The differences in the glacier histories observed at local and regional scales probably reflect the inherent limitations associated with the glacier records and/or the dating techniques used in each case together with the varying dominance of precipitation, temperature and other climatic and non-climatic factors on glacier mass balance and glacier dynamics. These differences indicate that the late Holocene glacier history of southern South America is more complex than commonly assumed. The evidence discussed in this study highlights not only the immense potential for glaciological studies of this region but also a significant need for an increased number of detailed, well-dated records of glacier fluctuations. This paper documents calcareous nannofossil assemblages and the bioevents recorded in the Austral basin of Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. Fifty samples from the type section of the Cerro Colorado Formation were analyzed. Nannoflora is moderately preserved and indicates a late Eocene to early Oligocene age for sedimentary rocks of this formation. Biostratigraphic results are based on distribution patterns of calcareous nannofossils assemblages, permitting comparison with the Southern Ocean zonations and some correlations with standard schemes. Our biostratigraphic interpretation shows an almost complete stratigraphic section spanning from the Priabonian to Rupelian Stages and calcareous nannofossil Chiasmolithus oamaruensis to Blackites spinosus zones, or the low latitude zones of Martini NP18 to NP21. The oldest fossiliferous rocks from the type locality of the Cerro Colorado Formation contain Chiasmolithus oamaruensis indicating nannofossil Zone NP18. The Eocene/Oligocene boundary was placed between the last occurrence (LO) of Reticulofenestra oamaruensis and the increasing in abundance (IB) of Reticulofenestra daviesii. Samples taken from the top of the section belong to the Estancia María Cristina Beds have Cyclicargolithus abisectus. During the late middle to late Eocene a hiatus is suggested between the Cerro Colorado and Leticia formations evident by a 39 Ma detrital zircon age dating, and the first occurrence (FO) of D ictyococcites bisectus. Furthermore, the presence of C. abisectus in the Estancia María Cristina Beds suggests an unconformity with the underlying Cerro Colorado Formation as previously inferred by stratigraphic relationships. • Calcareous nannofossils confirm a late Eocene to early Oligocene age. • The E/O boundary is placed in Tierra del Fuego, Austral basin. • The nanofossil bioevents are correlated with those of the Southern Ocean zonation. • The section spanning from the Chiasmolithus oamaruensis to B. spinosus Zones. The western slope of Cerro Domuyo in northern Patagonia is characterized by thermal springs with boiling waters, Quaternary silicic domes, and pyroclastic deposits that suggest the existence of a geothermal reservoir. According to geochemical studies, the reservoir may have a temperature of 220 °C and one of the largest advective heat fluxes reported for a continental volcanic center. In this paper, we propose a more refined conceptual model for the Domuyo geothermal area, based on a geological survey supported by U Pb, U Th, and Ar Ar geochronology and by magnetotelluric and gravity surveys. Our study indicates that the Domuyo Volcanic Complex (DVC) is a Middle Pleistocene dome complex overlying middle Miocene to Pliocene volcanic sequences, which in turn cover: 1) the Jurassic-Early Cretaceous Neuquén marine sedimentary succession, 2) silicic ignimbrites dated at ~186.7 Ma, and 3) the Paleozoic metamorphic basement intruded by ~288 Ma granite bodies. The volcanic cycle in the DVC is distinctly bimodal, characterized by the emplacement of massive silicic domes and less voluminous olivine basalts on its southern slope. A major collapse of the central dome at ~600 ka produced a voluminous (19.4 km3 and 133 km2) block-and-ash flow, and associated pyroclastic flows, that filled a valley to the southwest at distances up to ~30 km from Cerro Domuyo summit. This was followed by a period of intense effusive activity that formed the Cerro Guitarra, Cerro Las Pampas, Cerro Domo, and Cerro Covunco silicic domes. The last two domes are the youngest and largest edifices, dated at 0.50 Ma (Ar Ar age) and 0.25 Ma (U Th age). Pre-Cenozoic successions were affected by N-S reverse and thrust faults that were later displaced by an ENE-WSW-trending transtensional belt. The basement rocks at the northern termination of the Cordillera del Viento anticlinorium were also displaced towards the east-northeast by this belt, which is observed NNW of Cerro Domuyo. The DVC was emplaced within this zone of crustal weakness. The integration of geologic observations with magnetotelluric and gravity data, allowed us to develop an updated conceptual model of the geothermal system. The geothermal reservoir is inferred at a depth of less than 2 km within pre-Pliocene fractured rocks, bounded by ~WSW-ENE trending faults and sealed by the pyroclastic deposits and rhyolitic lavas of the DVC. The location of most thermal springs is not directly controlled by faults. Instead, flows emerge at the contact between the fractured and faulted basement and the caprock. • The Domuyo Volcanic Complex (DVC) is a silicic dome complex formed in the Pleistocene. • The central dome collapsed at ~600 ka producing a voluminous (19.4 km3) pyroclastic deposit. • The youngest domes were emplaced at ~500 ka and 250 ka. • The DVC was emplaced within a ENE-WSW trending transtensional zone of crustal weakness. • The geothermal reservoir is hosted in pre-Pliocene rocks sealed by the DVC pyroclastics and lavas. The Vaca Muerta Formation (Tithonian–early Valanginian) is the main source rock in the Neuquén Basin and the most important unconventional shale resource in South America. In the present study, organic geochemistry, electron microscopy and basin and petroleum system modelling (BPSM) were combined to evaluate source rock properties and related processes along a transect from the early oil (east) to the dry gas (west) window. The unit is characterized by high present‐day (1%–8% average) and original (2%–16% average) total organic carbon contents, which increase towards the base of the unit and basinal (west) settings. Scanning electron microscopy shows that organic pores derived from the transformation of type II kerogen. Isolated bubble pores are typical of the oil window, whereas bubble and densely distributed spongy pores occur in the gas stage, indicating that the maturity gradient exerts strong control on organic porosity. Organic geochemistry, pressure and porosity data were incorporated into a 2D basin petroleum system model that includes the sequential restoration of tectonic events and calculation of compaction trends, kerogen transformation, hydrocarbon generation and estimation of pore pressure through geologic time. The W–E regional model extends from the Agrio Fold and Thrust Belts to the basin border and allows us to evaluate the relationship between thermal maturity and timing of hydrocarbon generation from highly deformed (west) to undeformed (east) regions. Modelling results show a clear decrease in maturity and organic matter (OM) transformation towards the eastern basin margin. Maximum hydrocarbon generation occurred in the inner sectors of the belt, at ca. 120 Ma; long before the first Andean compression phase, which started during the Late Cretaceous (ca. 70 Ma). Miocene compression (15–7 Ma) promoted tectonic uplift of the inner and outer sectors of the belt associated with a reduction in thermal stress and kerogen cracking, as well as massive loss of retained fluids and a decrease in pore pressure. The OM transformation impacted (a) the magnitude of effective porosity associated with organic porosity development, and (b) the magnitude and distribution of pore pressure within the unit controlled by hydrocarbon generation and compaction disequilibrium. BPSM shows a progressive increase in effective porosity from the top to the base and towards the west region related to the original organic carbon content and maturity increasing along the same trend. Overpressure intervals with high organic carbon contents are the most prone to develop organic pores. This paper provides new trace element and Sr-Nd-Hf-Pb-O isotope data on Neoproterozoic to Phanerozoic mid to upper crustal lithologies of the Andean basement in central Chile and western Argentina (33°-35°S; 69°-72°W). It also provides additional data on trench sediments being subducted offshore the northern segment of the Southern Volcanic Zone in Chile. Neoproterozoic metamorphic and igneous rocks from the Guarguaráz complex (Argentina; 33.6°S, 69.5°W), when back corrected to 350 Ma, display a narrow range in 87Sr/86Sr i (0.713–0.718), 143Nd/144Nd i (0.5118–0.5121), εNd i (−8.1 to −1.1), εHf i (−11.4 to +1.2) and δ18O (9–13‰). Nd model ages (T DM = 1.08–1.65 Ga) for the Guarguaráz complex points to a Mesoproterozoic crustal residence age for these rocks. Metasedimentary rocks from the Carboniferous accretionary prism in central Chile (~34°S) overlap with these ranges, but differ by having lower initial 87Sr/86Sr i (0.7052–0.7093) and higher δ18O (14–17‰). The Guarguaráz metamorphic and igneous rocks, when back corrected to 350 Ma, have similar Pb isotope ratios than the Chilean Carboniferous metasedimentary rocks (206Pb/204Pb i = 17.58–18.52 vs. 18.33–18.46; 207Pb/204Pb i = 15.50–15.64 vs. ~15.64; 208Pb/204Pb i = 37.70–38.36 vs. 37.98–38.18). Two Guarguaráz samples are shifted towards less radiogenic Pb isotope ratios, similar to samples representative of the Cuyania basement. This suggests that Chilenia hosts at least two geochemical components: (1) a component with unradiogenic Pb isotopes, similar to the Proterozoic Cuyania basement, and (2) a component with more radiogenic Pb isotopes, similar to Chilean Phanerozoic metasedimentary and igneous rocks. The ranges in Pb isotope ratios for the Chilean Mesozoic (206Pb/204Pb i = 18.44–19.86; 207Pb/204Pb i = 15.59–15.69; 208Pb/204Pb i = 38.30–40.30) and Miocene (206Pb/204Pb i = 18.43–18.57; 207Pb/204Pb i = 15.58–15.60; 208Pb/204Pb i = 38.33–38.46) igneous rocks are similar to those of the accretionary prism. The Mesozoic and Miocene intrusive rocks are characterized by low 87Sr/86Sr i (0.704–0.708 and ~0.704, respectively) and high εNd i (−6.2 to +4.0 and + 3.9 to +5.9, respectively) and εHf i (+7.0 to +12.7 and + 8.5 to +10.8, respectively). They can be divided into two groups. Group (1), consisting exclusively of Mesozoic samples, has negative εNd i , 87Sr/86Sr i > 0.706, elevated e.g., Ba/Th, Nb/Yb, Zr/Y and lower Nb/La, reflecting derivation from enriched (most likely overriding crust or mantle) material. Group (2), consisting of Mesozoic and Miocene rocks, has positive εNd i , εHf i , and lower initial 87Sr/86Sr i than group (1) reflecting depleted mantle melts addition to the crust. Finally, Sr-Nd-O isotopic compositions of the trench sediments at latitude 33°-33.3°S are almost identical to those at latitude 35°-40°S, indicating a relative homogeneous material input along the SVZ, although there are subtle differences in REE and Pb isotopic compositions. Based on Nd–Hf isotopes, trench sediments offshore Chile (εNd> +1; εHf > +2) and offshore Peru (εNd < −2; εHf < +1) have distinct compositions, reflecting the differences in input material. The Silurian-Devonian siliciclastic sedimentary units known as Sierra Grande Formation and the upper part of the Ventana Group crop out in the eastern area of the North Patagonian Massif and in the Ventania system, toward the Atlantic border of Argentina. Both sequences show similar stratigraphical characteristics and were deposited in a shallow marine platform paleoenvironment. Previous contributions have provided evidence of an allochthonous Patagonia terrane that amalgamate to Gondwana during the Permian-Triassic. However, other lines of research support a crustal continuity southward, where the Pampean and Famatinian events extend into the northern Patagonia. In either case, the detrital input to the Eo-Mesopaleozoic basins generated along the passive margin tectonic setting should reflect the sedimentary sources. In this contribution, new age data on the sedimentary provenance of these units is provided by U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopic studies on detrital zircons, using LA-ICP-MS and SHRIMP methodologies. The main sedimentary sources of detrital zircons for both regions are of Cambrian-Ordovician and Neoproterozoic age, while a secondary mode is Mesoproterozoic. Zircons from older cratonic sources (Mesoarchean-Paleoproterozoic ages) are scarcely recorded. The sample from the upper section of the Devonian Lolén Formation (Ventana Group) shows an important change in the sedimentary provenance, with a main mode of Mesoproterozoic detrital zircons. Detrital source areas considering the orogenic cycles known for southwest South America (Famatinian, Pampean-Brasiliano, Mesoproterozoic-'Grenvillian' and Paleoproterozoic-'Transamazonian') are proposed. Whole-rock geochemical analyses using major and trace elements in combination with the Sm-Nd and Pb-Pb isotope systems, together with SHRIMP age dating on metasedimentary rocks from the Sierras de Chepes, the Sierras de Córdoba, the Sierra Norte and the San Luis Formation in the Sierra de San Luis, have been carried out to unravel the provenance and the geodynamic history of the Eastern Sierras Pampeanas, Central Argentina. The geochemical and the Sm-Nd data point to a slightly stronger mafic and less-fractionated material in the provenance area of the Sierras de Córdoba when compared to the other units. The T model ages from the Sierras de Chepes (~1.82 Ga) and the Sierra Norte (~1.79 Ga) are significantly older than the data from the Sierras de Córdoba (1.67 Ga). The Pb data are homogeneous for the different units. Only the Pb/Pb ratios of some samples from the Sierras de Córdoba are higher. A late Pampean detrital zircon peak around 520 Ma from the Sierras de Chepes is in accordance with the new data from the San Luis Formation. This is similar to the literature data from the Famatina Belt located to the northwest of the Sierras de Chepes and also fits the detrital zircon peaks in the Mesón group. These maximum depositional ages were also reported from some locations in the Puncoviscana Formation but are absent in the Sierras de Córdoba. An improved model for the development of the Eastern Sierras Pampeanas in the area between the Sierras de Córdoba and the Puncoviscana Formation is provided. This gives new insights into the late Pampean development of the Sierra de San Luis and the complex development of the Eastern Sierras Pampeanas. This new model explains the younger detrital ages in the Puncoviscana Formation compared with the older ages of the Sierras de Córdoba. Another model of the Sierra de San Luis explains the younger depositional ages of the Pringles Metamorphic Complex and the San Luis Formation when compared to the Nogolí Metamorphic Complex and the Conlara Metamorphic Complex. Additionally, the rather fast change of the high-grade metamorphic conditions in the Pringles Metamorphic Complex and the low-grade metamorphic conditions in the San Luis Formation is explained by extension, the ascent of (ultra) mafic material and later folding and erosion.
