The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of propylamine addition to urea-formaldehyde resin on the properties of resultant plywood. The research consisted in investigating the properties of both liquid and cured resins, as well as the produced plywood. Studies have shown that the incorporation of propylamine adversely affected reactivity of the adhesive mixtures by increasing their pH. The evaluation of adhesive chemical structure with FTIR spectroscopy showed some slight changes indicating the reaction of formaldehyde with introduced modifier. The addition of propylamine contributed to the considerable reduction of free formaldehyde contained in the cured adhesive. Furthermore, the propylamine was also found to work effectively as a formaldehyde scavenger by significantly reducing the hazardous emission from plywood. However, based on the results of bonding quality, delamination, bending strength and modulus of elasticity it was found that application of propylamine resulted in a noticeable deterioration of plywood properties. Partial liquefaction of residual biomass shows good potential for developing new materials suitable for making bio-based composites. Three-layer particleboards were produced by replacing virgin wood particles with partially liquefied bark (PLB) in the core or surface layers. PLB was prepared by the acid-catalyzed liquefaction of industrial bark residues in polyhydric alcohol. The chemical and microscopic structure of bark and residues after liquefaction were evaluated by means of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), while the particleboards were tested for their mechanical and water-related properties, as well as their emission profiles. Through a partial liquefaction process, some FTIR absorption peaks of the bark residues were lower than those of raw bark, indicating hydrolysis of chemical compounds. The surface morphology of bark did not change considerably after partial liquefaction. Particleboards with PLB in the core layers showed overall lower densities and mechanical properties (modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture, and internal bond strength), and were less water-resistant as compared to the ones with PLB used in the surface layers. Formaldehyde emissions from the particleboards were 0.284–0.382 mg/m2·h, and thus, below the E1 class limit required by European Standard EN 13986:2004. The major emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were carboxylic acids as oxidization and degradation products from hemicelluloses and lignin. The development of new bio-friendly alternatives for wood conservation is of great interest and necessary for environmental protection. In this paper, the preparations based on the propolis extract and silicon compounds were used as green wood preservatives. The wood was treated with 15% propolis extract (EEP) and two propolis-silane preparations, namely, EEP-VTMOS/TEOS (EEP with vinyltrimethoxysilane and tetraethyl orthosilicate) and EEP-MPTMOS/TEOS (EEP with 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate and tetraethyl orthosilicate). The aim of the research was to determine the properties of treated wood, which was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Moreover, the resistance against brown-rot fungus Coniophora puteana and the mechanical properties of treated wood were also determined. The analysis of phenolic compounds concentration in treated wood indicated that phenols were in greater extent leached from wood treated with the propolis extract than from wood impregnated with the propolis-silane preparations. The presence of silicon in treated wood both before and after leaching was confirmed by CP MAS NMR measurements. In turn, AAS and XRF analyses indicated that the degree of Si leaching from wood impregnated with EEP-VTMOS/TEOS was approximately two times lower than from EEP-MPTMOS/TEOS treated wood. The results of chemical analyses confirmed that the constituents of the propolis-silane preparations formed permanent bonds with wood. In turn, the results of the antifungal efficacy against C. puteana showed that the propolis extract and the propolis-silane preparations limited the fungus activity, even the wood was subjected to leaching procedure. The treated wood showed an increase in bending strength and a decrease in the modulus of elasticity compared to untreated wood. Most composites produced come from fossil fuel sources. Renewable strategies are needed for the production of composites. Charcoal fines are considered waste and an alternative for the production of biocomposites. The charcoal fines resulting from the pyrolysis of any biomass are an efficient alternative for the production of green composites. Studies to understand how the pyrolysis parameters influence the properties of this material for the production of biocomposites are necessary. Charcoal has a high carbon content and surface area, depending on final production temperatures. This study aims to evaluate charcoal fines as potential reinforcing agents in biocomposites. This study investigated for the first time charcoal fines from three pyrolysis temperatures (400, 600, and 800 °C) to identify the most suitable charcoal for use as a raw material in the production of carbon biocomposites with 30% by weight incorporated into a polyester matrix composite. Apparent density, porosity, morphology, and immediate chemical composition and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of charcoal fines were evaluated. The charcoal fines produced at 800 °C showed interesting potential as polymeric matrix fillers due to their higher porosity (81.08%), fixed carbon content (96.77%), and hydrophobicity. The biocomposites were analyzed for flexural and tensile strength and scanning electron microscopy. The results revealed an improvement in resistance at elevated temperatures, especially at 800 °C, with higher breaking strength (84.11 MPa), modulus of elasticity (4064.70 MPa), and traction (23.53 MPa). Scanning electron microscopy revealed an improvement in morphology, with a decrease in roughness at 800 °C, which caused greater adhesion to the polyester matrix. The new segmented poly(thiourethane-urethane)s (PTURs) based on 1,1′-methanediylbis(4-isocyanatocyclohexane) (HMDI, Desmodur W®), polycarbonate diol (PCD, Desmophen C2200) and (methanediyldibenzene-4,1-diyl)dimethanethiol were synthesized by one-step melt polyaddition method. The obtained PTURs, with a content of 30–60 wt% of the hard segments (HS), were tested in which the influence of changes in the HS content on their properties was determined. The polymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), thermal analysis (DSC, TGA) and thermomechanical analysis (DMTA). Additionally, tensile strength, optical (refractive index, UV-VIS and color) and surface properties of the obtained polymers (contact angle and surface free energy) and adhesion to copper were examined. FTIR analysis verified the supposed structure of the polymers obtained and showed a complete conversion of the isocyanate groups. TGA analysis confirmed the relatively good thermal stability of the polymers. On the other hand, after performing the DSC analysis, it was possible to state that the obtained materials were partially or completely amorphous, and the microphase separation decreased with increasing HS content in the polymer. Similar observations were made from the DMTA data. In addition, the hardness, tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, storage modulus, adhesion to copper, refractive index and total free surface energy increased with increasing HS content in the polymer. This study evaluates the properties of particleboards made from palm oil stems by adding PP-g-MAH adhesives in the form of freeze-dried and pure samples. Modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, tensile strength, swelling thickness and absorption of water from the board was evaluated based on the Indonesian National Standard. Broken modulus and internal bond strength increase with an increasing number of PP-g-MAH connections. The swelling thickness and water absorption decreased with an increasing percentage of PP-g-MAH. Surface roughness and fracture strength increased with the addition of PP-g-MAH, Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy was also considered. This study examined the effect of applying cellulose nanoparticles as a filling material for phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin in the process of manufacturing water-resistant plywood. Based on investigations that concerned the rheological behavior of resin mixture containing various amounts of nanofiller, the modification of resin resulted in a major increase of viscosity. Although Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy did not fully explain the effect of modification on the chemical structure of the adhesive, there was a noticeable improvement in the morphology of cured nanocellulose-reinforced resin. Based on the bonding quality results, the optimum amount of nanocellulose was 3 PBW (parts by weight) per 100 PBW of resin and it allowed the achievement of a notable increase in shear strength values. Moreover, introduction of cellulosic nanoparticles had a positive effect on mechanical properties such as bending strength and modulus of elasticity. Low-molecular-weight 1,3-dimethylol-4,5-dihydroxyethyleneurea (DMDHEU) was used to modify bamboo strips catalyzed by maleic anhydride. In this study, response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to optimize the treatment conditions for DMDHEU modification of bamboo. Three selected parameters, DMDHEU concentration, curing temperature, and curing time, were further optimized using response surface methodology via the box behnken design (BBD). The equilibrium moisture content (EMC), water absorption (WA), anti-swelling efficiency (ASE), mechanical properties, and mold resistances to (Aspergillus niger V. Tiegh, Penicillium citrinum Thom, Trichoderma viride Pers. ex Fr., and Botryodiplodia theobromae Pat.) were evaluated as the dependent variables. The results show that the dimensional stability and mold resistance of bamboo were enhanced remarkably, and the modulus of rupture (MOR) of bamboo was decreased after DMDHEU modification, while the modulus of elasticity (MOE) changed slightly, and the parallel-to-grain compressive strength (CS) was increased. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to investigate the effect of modification on the bamboo microstructure and functional groups. In the context of SEM, TGA, and FTIR analyses, the thermal stability of bamboo modified with a medium or high concentration of DMDHEU was improved, the starch granules in the parenchyma cells of modified bamboo dissolved, and few resins were distributed in the lumens of treated bamboo. Wood plastic composites have received increasing attention during the last decades, because of many advantages related to their use. However the durability of Wood plastic composites after ultraviolet exposure has become a concern. In this research, hybrid nanocomposites of polyethylene and woodflour with different concentrations of nanoclay were fabricated using melt compounding followed by injection molding. Specimens were exposed for 2000 h to ultraviolet radiation and moisture cycling in a laboratory weathering device to simulate the effects of exposure to sunlight and rain. Physical and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were evaluated, before and after weathering. The results indicated that the water absorption of wood plastic composites increased after weathering but nanoclay reduced the intensity of weathering to some extent, through decreasing of water absorption. Also results showed that weathering decreased modulus of elasticity values, however good dispersion of clay layers resulted in fewer drop of modulus of elasticity values. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that lowest carbonyl index is related to the nano wood plastic composites with 2wt% nanoclay. Nisin (0.2 IU per cm films) containing biodegradable films were produced from pea protein isolate (PPI), whey protein isolate (WPI), and polylactic acid (PLA). Nisin was released over 4 h at 22 °C and 8 h at 4 °C. PPI released more nisin compared to other films suppressing the growth of Listeria monocytogenes ( P < 0.05) based upon diffusion into agar and liquid culture media. The population of bacteria after 48 h in liquid media was 6 CFU/mL (1 log increase) in PPI, 8.47 CFU/mL (3.47 log increase) in WPI and 9 CFU/mL (4 log increase) in PLA, which was significantly lower in protein based films compared to PLA ( P < 0.05). The inhibition zone in agar test was significantly higher ( P < 0.05) in PPI and WPI, compared to PLA film, which might be due to the higher hydration in protein based films. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) showed that nisin altered the intensity of amide I peaks in protein based films suggesting that nisin can bind to the protein functional groups in PPI and WPI. Thermogram showed that nisin did not influence the glass transition and melting temperatures of the films. Nisin containing films exhibited significantly lower enthalpy compared to control films ( P < 0.05). The alkyl-alkoxysilane (AAS) pre-impregnation method and thermal modification were combined to improve the water-related properties of southern yellow pine (Pinus spp.) sapwood. Four types of AAS with varied alkyl chain lengths, including butyltrimethoxysilane (BTMOS), octyltrimethoxysilane (OTMOS), dodecyltrimethoxysilane (DTMOS), and cetyltrimethoxysilane (CTMOS), were used to pre-impregnate wood samples at a concentration of 5% or 15% mass fraction, and the subsequent thermal modification was processed at either 180 °C or 200 °C. The water absorption, dimensional stability, equilibrium moisture content (EMC), mechanical properties (modulus of rupture (MOR), and modulus of elasticity (MOE)), and mold resistance of the treated wood were evaluated. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to reveal the mechanism of the combined treatments in improving the properties of wood. Compared with thermal modification alone, the AAS combined treatment improved the water repellency, mechanical properties, and mold resistance of the modified wood. Wood polymer composites were manufactured from several types of tropical wood species by impregnating the woods with acrylonitrile monomer solution. The physical and mechanical properties of wood polymer composites were then investigated in this study. The vacuum-pressure method was employed to impregnate wood samples with monomer and in situ polymerization. Acrylonitrile reacted and incorporated with wood, which was confirmed through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy test analysis. The mechanical properties of wood samples in terms of modulus of elasticity and compressive modulus were found to be improved on acrylonitrile treatment. Besides, the fabricated wood polymer composite samples had lower water absorption and higher surface hardness (Shore D) value as compared to their corresponding raw one. The need to protect the environment has generated, in the past decade, a competition at the producers' level to use, as much as possible, natural materials, which are biodegradable and compostable. This trend and the composite materials have undergone a spectacular development of the natural components. Starting from these tendencies we have made and studied from the point of view of mechanical and chemical properties composite materials with three types of hybrid matrix based on the Dammar natural hybrid resin and two types of reinforcers made of flax fabric. We have researched the mechanical properties of these composite materials based on their tensile strength and vibration behavior, respectively. We have determined the characteristic curves, elasticity modulus, tensile strength, elongation at break, specific frequency and damping factor. Using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) analysis we have obtained images of the breaking area for each sample that underwent a tensile test and, by applying FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) and EDS (Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy) analyzes, we have determined the spectrum bands and the chemical composition diagram of the samples taken from the hybrid resins used as a matrix for the composite materials under study. Previously, we have described the preparation of a novel fibroin methacrylamide (FbMA), a polymer network with improved functionality, capable of photocrosslinking into Fb hydrogels with elevated stiffness. However, it was unclear how this new functionality affects the structure of the material and its beta-sheet-associated crystallinity. Here, we show that the proposed method of Fb methacrylation does not disturb the protein's ability to self-aggregate into the stable beta-sheet-based crystalline domains. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) shows that, although the precursor ethanol-untreated Fb films exhibited a slightly higher degree of beta-sheet content than the FbMA films (46.9% for Fb-F-aq and 41.5% for FbMA-F-aq), both materials could equally achieve the highest possible beta-sheet content after ethanol treatment (49.8% for Fb-F-et and 49.0% for FbMA-F-et). The elasticity modulus for the FbMA-F-et films was twofold higher than that of the Fb-F-et as measured by the uniaxial tension (130 ± 1 MPa vs. 64 ± 6 MPa), and 1.4 times higher (51 ± 11 MPa vs. 36 ± 4 MPa) as measured by atomic force microscopy. The culturing of human MG63 osteoblast-like cells on Fb-F-et, FbMA-F-et-w/oUV, and FbMA-F-et substrates revealed that the photocrosslinking-induced increment of stiffness increases the area covered by the cells, rearrangement of actin cytoskeleton, and vinculin distribution in focal contacts, altogether enhancing the osteoinductive activity of the substrate. Photocatalytic cementitious materials are used in the exterior of the buildings and infrastructure for self-cleaning and air-purifying purposes. These materials are exposed to the aggressive exposure conditions like acid rain, runoff water and are subjected to the deterioration due to the leaching of calcium. The knowledge of leaching attack upon photocatalytic cementitious materials after the addition of nano-materials is necessary. In the current study, the influence of nano-silica addition on the leaching attack upon photocatalytic cement mortars was thoroughly investigated. For this purpose, photocatalytic mortars were made by adding 3% TiO2 and variable amount (0–2%) of nano-silica. Accelerated leaching environment was created by immersing mortars in 6 M ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) solution. The progressive development of the leaching depth in mortars was measured. The loss of hardened properties was monitored by evaluating the compressive strength, flexural strength, porosity, and dynamic modulus of elasticity. X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy tests were conducted to know the microstructural deteriorations. Results indicated that the leaching attack induced mechanical and microstructural damages in the mortars, but the addition of nano-silica decreased mechanical and microstructural damages in the photocatalytic mortars and increased the resistance of photocatalytic mortars to leaching attack.
