In this article, I have presented findings from survey data to describe elementary teachers' and teacher-librarians' use of various genres of children's literature and their use of children's literature in specific curriculum areas. Data analysis revealed that teachers and teacher-librarians most frequently used the genres of non-fiction, realistic fiction, and fantasy in their teaching. They used children's literature in language and social studies to a greater extent than in other curricular areas. In general, teachers' and teacher-librarians' use of Canadian literature was limited. I have concluded the article with a discussion of the importance of national literature in Canadian classrooms. Problematic notions of Canadian identity in the work of Mavis Gallant provide an entry point into current debates on the topic of cosmopolitanism, and begin to challenge dominant modes of postcolonial and multiculturalism theory. Depictions of the cosmopolitan in her work reveal a spectrum of representation and experience, from euphoric visions of shared humanity to more complex pictures of global citizenship. The article discusses an analysis of Burkhard Niederhoff on the return of the dead in Margaret Atwood's novels such as "Surfacing" and "Alias Grace" wherein he mentions the presence of survival in the central theme of Canadian literature. One of the major points of Niederhoff is that Atwood's revenants are not only restored from death into the realm of life but they are also restored to death. It notes that the analysis of Niederhoff deepens with the awareness that the calling of the revenant both to life and to death is attained with the fundamental question of knowledge.

This essay examines the phenomenon of crossover fiction, that is, fiction that crosses from child to adult or adult to child audiences. Crossover literature may be addressed to a mixed-age audience by the author and / or publisher, or it may initially be written and / or published for a particular audience and subsequently appropriated by another in a process of 'cross-reading.' Various types of crossover fiction are examined : adult-to-child crossover fiction, rewritings for a different audience and child-to-adult crossover fiction. In addition, this article looks at the significant role that publishers and marketing strategies play in what is largely a marketing phenomenon. Crossover fiction has been seen by some as an essentially European phenomenon, but it is in fact an important, widespread and expanding global trend, as demonstrated in the author's book Crossover fiction: global and historical perspectives (2009).
