It is unclear whether muscle blood flow (MBF) is altered in long-term Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) survivors. We tested the hypothesis that 1) MBF response during mental stress (MS) is impaired in long-term HL survivors and 2) aerobic exercise training combined with local strength exercise (ET) restores MBF responses during MS in these survivors. Eighteen 5-year HL survivors and 10 aged-paired healthy subjects (HC) were studied. Twenty HL survivors were randomly divided into two groups: exercise-trained (HLT, n = 10) and untrained (HLUT, n = 10). Maximal aerobic capacity was evaluated by a cardiopulmonary exercise test and forearm blood flow (FBF) by venous occlusion plethysmography. MS was elicited by Stroop color and word test. ET was conducted for 4 mo, 3/wk for 60 min each session. The aerobic exercise intensity corresponded to anaerobic threshold up to 10% below the respiratory compensation point. The strength exercises consisted of two to three sets of chest press, pulley and squat exercises, 12–15 repetitions each exercise at 30–50% of the maximal voluntary contraction. Baseline was similar in HL survivors and HC, except peak oxygen consumption (peak V̇ o 2, P = 0.013) and FBF (P = 0.006) that were lower in the HL survivors. FBF responses during MS were lower in HL survivors (P < 0.001). ET increased peak V̇ o 2 (11.59 ± 3.07%, P = 0.002) and FBF at rest (33.74 ± 5.13%, P < 0.001) and during MS (24 ± 5.31%, P = 0.001). Further analysis showed correlation between the changes in peak V̇ o 2 and the changes in FBF during MS (r = 0.711, P = 0.001). In conclusion, long-term HL survivors have impaired MBF responses during MS. ET restores MBF responses during MS. NEW & NOTEWORTHY: Long-term Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) survivors have impaired muscle blood flow responses during mental stress and decreased maximal aerobic capacity. Supervised aerobic exercise training combined with local strength exercises restores muscle blood flow responses during mental stress and maximal aerobic capacity in these survivors. These findings provide evidence of safety and effectiveness of exercise training in HL survivors. Obesity over‐activates the classical arm of the renin‐angiotensin system (RAS), impairing skeletal muscle remodeling. We aimed to compare the effect of exercise training and enalapril, an angiotensin‐converting enzyme inhibitor, on RAS modulation in the skeletal muscle of obese animals. Thus, we divided C57BL/6 mice into two groups: standard chow (SC) and high‐fat (HF) diet for 16 weeks. At the eighth week, the HF‐fed animals were divided into four subgroups—sedentary (HF), treated with enalapril (HF‐E), exercise training protocol (HF‐T), and combined interventions (HF‐ET). After 8 weeks of treatment, we evaluated body mass and index (BMI), body composition, exercise capacity, muscle morphology, and skeletal muscle molecular markers. All interventions resulted in lower BMI and attenuation of overactivation in the classical arm, while favoring the B2R in the bradykinin receptors profile. This was associated with reduced apoptosis markers in obese skeletal muscles. The HF‐T group showed an increase in muscle mass and expression of biosynthesis markers and a reduction in expression of degradation markers and muscle fiber atrophy due to obesity. These findings suggest that the combination intervention did not have a synergistic effect against obesity‐induced muscle remodeling. Virtual reality shows great potential as an alternative to traditional therapies for motor rehabilitation given its ability to immerse the user in engaging scenarios that abstract them from medical facilities and tedious rehabilitation exercises. This paper presents a virtual reality application that includes three serious games and that was developed for motor rehabilitation. It uses a standalone headset and the user's hands without the need for any controller for interaction. Interacting with an immersive virtual reality environment using only natural hand gestures involves an interaction that is similar to that of real life, which would be especially desirable for patients with motor problems. A study involving 28 participants (4 with motor problems) was carried out to compare two types of interaction (hands vs. controllers). All of the participants completed the exercises. No significant differences were found in the number of attempts necessary to complete the games using the two types of interaction. The group that used controllers required less time to complete the exercise. The performance outcomes were independent of the gender and age of the participants. The subjective assessment of the participants with motor problems was not significantly different from the rest of the participants. With regard to the interaction type, the participants mostly preferred the interaction using their hands (78.5%). All four participants with motor problems preferred the hand interaction. These results suggest that the interaction with the user's hands together with standalone headsets could improve motivation, be well accepted by motor rehabilitation patients, and help to complete exercise therapy at home. Exercise training improves physical capacity in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), but the mechanisms involved in this response is not fully understood. The aim of this study was to determine if physical capacity increase in patients HFrEF is associated with muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) reduction and muscle blood flow (MBF) increase. The study included 124 patients from a 17-year database, divided according to exercise training status: 1) exercise-trained (ET, n = 83) and 2) untrained (UNT, n = 41). MSNA and MBF were obtained using microneurography and venous occlusion plethysmography, respectively. Physical capacity was evaluated by cardiopulmonary exercise test. Moderate aerobic exercise was performed 3 times/wk. for 4 months. Exercise training increased peak oxygen consumption (V̇O 2 , 16.1 ± 0.4 vs 18.9 ± 0.5 mL·kg−1·min−1, P < 0.001), LVEF (28 ± 1 vs 30 ± 1%, P = 0.027), MBF (1.57 ± 0.06 vs 2.05 ± 0.09 mL.min−1.100 ml−1, P < 0.001) and muscle vascular conductance (MVC, 1.82 ± 0.07 vs 2.45 ± 0.11 units, P < 0.001). Exercise training significantly decreased MSNA (45 ± 1 vs 32 ± 1 bursts/min, P < 0.001). The logistic regression analyses showed that MSNA [(OR) 0.921, 95% CI 0.883–0.962, P < 0.001] was independently associated with peak V̇O 2. The increase in physical capacity provoked by aerobic exercise in patients with HFrEF is associated with the improvement in MSNA. • There is a link between physical capacity and muscle sympathetic nerve activity. • Physical capacity depends on sympathetic-mediated skeletal myopathy amelioration. • The muscle sympathetic nerve activity reduction may contribute to the improvement in prognosis in patients with heart failure. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress poses a new pathological mechanism for metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). MAFLD treatment has encompassed renin-angiotensin system (RAS) blockers and aerobic exercise training, but their association with hepatic ER stress is not well known. Therefore, we aimed to compare the effects of hepatic RAS modulation by enalapril and/or aerobic exercise training over ER stress in MAFLD caused by a diet-induced obesity model. C57BL/6 mice were fed a standard-chow (CON, n = 10) or a high-fat (HF, n = 40) diet for 8 weeks. HF group was then randomly divided into: HF (n = 10), HF + Enalapril (EN, n = 10), HF + Aerobic exercise training (AET, n = 10), and HF + Enalapril+Aerobic exercise training (EN + AET, n = 10) for 8 more weeks. Body mass (BM) and glucose profile were evaluated. In the liver, ACE and ACE2 activity, morphology, lipid profile, and protein expression of ER stress and metabolic markers were assessed. Both enalapril and aerobic exercise training provided comparable efficacy in improving diet-induced MAFLD through modulation of RAS and ER stress, but the latter was more efficient in improving ER stress, liver damage and metabolism. This is the first study to evaluate pharmacological (enalapril) and non-pharmacological (aerobic exercise training) RAS modulators associated with ER stress in a diet-induced MAFLD model. HF diet led to favoring of the RAS classical arm and increased ER stress through higher expression of the eIF2α pathway. These results could be related to HF diet-associated insulin resistance and upregulation of gluconeogenesis enzymes PEPCK and G6Pase, as well as lipid accumulation through increased lipogenic transcription factor SREBP1c and lower PPARα levels. Enalapril treatment, aerobic exercise training, and the combination of both interventions were able to favor the RAS counterregulatory arm, improve ER stress and decrease lipid accumulation. All interventions were also able to improve insulin resistance, although aerobic exercise training showed more efficiency, reverting glucose intolerance and decreasing the expression of PEPCK. Aerobic exercise training was also the only intervention able to reduce binucleation of hepatocytes and the association with enalapril treatment reverted the increase in hepatocytes with two or more nuclei, which could be suggestive of liver damage associated with the pharmacological treatment. Obesity-related metabolic diseases occur as a result of disruptions in white adipose tissue (WAT) plasticity, especially through visceral fat accumulation and adipocyte hypertrophy. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of renin–angiotensin system (RAS) and bradykinin receptors modulation by enalapril treatment and/or exercise training on WAT morphology and related deleterious outcomes. Male C57BL/6 mice were fed either a standard chow or a high-fat (HF) diet for 16 weeks. At the 8th week, HF-fed animals were divided into sedentary (HF), enalapril treatment (HF-E), exercise training (HF-T), and enalapril treatment plus exercise training (HF-ET) groups. Following the experimental protocol, body mass gain, adiposity index, insulin resistance, visceral WAT morphometry, renin-angiotensin system, and bradykinin receptors were evaluated. The HF group displayed increased adiposity, larger visceral fat mass, and adipocyte hypertrophy, which was accompanied by insulin resistance, overactivation of Ang II/AT1R arm, and favoring of B1R in bradykinin receptors profile. All interventions ameliorated visceral adiposity and related outcomes by favoring the Ang 1–7/MasR arm and the B2R expression in B1R/B2R ratio. However, combined therapy additively reduced Ang II/Ang 1–7 ratio.
