The aim of this study was to quantify the effect of land use change (LUC) implemented to meet nutrient load targets for a freshwater lake in New Zealand. We used the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model in combination with a non-parametric statistical test to determine whether afforestation of 15% of a subcatchment area was adequate to meet assigned nutrient load targets. A regional management authority set nutrient load targets of reduction in total nitrogen (TN) by 0.9 t yr -1 and reduction in total phosphorus (TP) by 0.05 t yr -1 to avoid eutrophication in the receiving waters of a freshwater lake. The load reduction was designed to be achieved through 200 ha of LUC from pasture to trees. Analysis of nutrient loads before, during, and following LUC shows that a 15% increase in forest cover decreased the annual flow (7.2%), TP load (33.3%), and TN load (13.1%). As flow and water quality observations were discrete and at irregular intervals, we used a parametric test and the SWAT model as different lines of evidence to demonstrate the effect of afforestation on flow and water quality. Policymakers concerned with decisions about LUC to improve the quality of receiving waters can benefit from applying our findings and using a statistical and numerical modelling framework to evaluate the adequacy of land use change to support improvements in water quality., (© 2023. The Anthropocene has driven a transformative era where human activities exert unprecedented influence on Earth's biosphere. Consequently, synanthropic organisms, adept at thriving in human-modified environments, have emerged. While well studied in terrestrial ecosystems, the presence and ecological importance of synanthropic species in aquatic ecosystems, specifically among cyanobacteria, are less understood. Cyanobacteria blooms, notorious for their detrimental effects on ecosystems and human health, are increasing in frequency and intensity globally. In this perspective, we explore the evidence supporting this rise of cyanobacteria blooms, emphasizing the roles of human-induced eutrophication and climate change on select cyanobacteria genera. Cyanobacteria are not a monolith, with certain genera showing an observable increase within anthropogenically modified environments. We propose the establishment of a new sub-branch of phycology that explicitly investigates the ecology and physiology of synanthropic cyanobacteria. Understanding the intricate interactions between synanthropic species and human populations is imperative for managing human-altered ecosystems and conserving freshwater resources, particularly in the face of increasing global water insecurity. PRACTITIONER POINTS: The rise in cyanobacteria blooms is driven by a small subset of human-adapted genera-synanthropic cyanobacteria. Research is needed to characterize synanthropic cyanobacteria, which will aid in developing tailored management approaches. Abstract Although paper production demonstrates high energy and water sensitivity in their life cycles, only a few systematic analyses have focused on these issues. Therefore, an energy and carbon coupled water footprint analysis of five types of Kraft wood pulp-based paper (i.e., specialty-, art-, household-, light coated-, and tissue paper) is conducted in this study to help improve the environmental performance of the paper industry. All investigations are conducted with an impact-oriented approach based on ISO standards. Results show that elemental-chlorine-free bleaching is more environmentally friendly than chlorination-alkaline extraction-hypochlorite bleaching, specifically for global warming, aquatic eutrophication, and human health (i.e., carcinogens and non-carcinogens). Gray water footprint along whole life cycles of each product is approximately twice of blue water footprint. Direct processes contribute approximately 50% to water scarcity, while their impact on aquatic eutrophication ranges from 0.002% to 50.72%. For other midpoints, indirect processes dominate the influences. Meanwhile, COD, BOD 5 , CO 2 , TP, Cr (Ⅵ), Ti, Hg, and As are key contributors. Finally, reusing sludge by direct burning in the recovery furnace, reclaiming organic compounds in black liquor before alkali recycling, and integrating black liquor gasification technology are expected to provide substantial environmental benefits. Amelioration of wastewater treatment, optimization of the national energy structure, and improvement of the efficiency of chemicals and freshwater are recommended. The turnover of phosphorus and nitrogen have been studied in a low salinity estuary in the Bothnian Sea. The estuary, Gårdsfjärden, has a high loading of nutrients from a pulp and paper mill which supplies the estuary with three times the annual natural input of phosphorus and nitrogen, respectively. The turnover of nutrients was to a great extent determined by hydrodynamic variations. During periods of intense resuspension there was a net export of particulate bound nutrients from the estuary to the sea but since these periods were short there was an overall net retention of particulate nutrients. The estuary was a source for dissolved phosphorus to the sea. The major source of phosphorus export was release of dissolved P from anoxic sediments. Gårdsfjärden was a sink for dissolved nitrogen which most likely escaped the estuary by denitrification. Nitrate was supplied by degradation of particulate organic nitroge'n but the main source was import from the sea.

Over the last decade, the use of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) has increased by a factor of three within the Swedish pulp industry. The effects of pulp mill wastewater in combination with EDTA on metal mobility and the consequences for ecologically relevant organisms have been studied. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid was added to pulp mill effluent water in the laboratory and compared to wastewater without EDTA. Degradation of the water was followed over a experimental period up to eight weeks and samples were taken five times for chemical analysis and at the beginning and the end for biological tests. Half a year later, the experiment was repeated. The results from both experiments showed that EDTA markedly increased the solubility of zinc, cadmium, lead, iron, nickel, and copper, whereas the solubility of vanadium, molybdenum, thallium, arsenic, and chromium was not changed by the presence of EDTA. No measurable degradation of EDTA occurred even after 5.5 months. The toxicity of the pulp mill effluent water was low, and only a slight toxic effect was observed on the reproduction of Ceramium strictum. The most pronounced effect was a stimulation in the growth of three algal species in 5 to 20% (v/v) total effluent wastewater with and without EDTA. The presence of EDTA in the dissolved fraction of the pulp mill effluent water increased the growth stimulation in 20 to 40% (v/v), possibly because of the increased availability of essential metals like iron, zinc, and copper. The capacity of the pulp mill wastewater to support algal growth was nearly as good as a rich nutrient medium for algae. The combination of poorly degradable EDTA and the increasing availability of metals might further enhance eutrophication in the recipient areas of pulp mills.

The dynamics of physico-chemical, nutrient, and chlorophyll-a variables were studied in the bloom and non-bloom locations along the off-Gujarat coastal waters to understand the variability in biogeochemistry using multivariate analytical tests. The dissolved oxygen was significantly lower in the bloom stations (3.89 ± 0.44 mgL -1 ) than in the non-bloom stations (5.50 ± 0.70 mg L -1 ), due to the biological degradation of organic matter in addition to anaerobic microbial respiration. Nutrients (PO 4 and NO 3 ) and Chl-a concentrations were recorded higher in the bloom locations at 0.83 ± 0.21 µmol L -1 , 4.47 ± 0.69 µmol L -1 , 4.14 ± 1.49 mg m -3 , respectively. PO 4 and NO 3 have shown a significantly higher positive correlation of r = 0.73 and r = 0.69 with Chl-a for bloom data than the non-bloom data. The percentage variance contributed by PC1 and PC2 for both bloom and non-bloom locations were estimated at 52.33%. The variable PO 4 explains the highest 24.19% variability in PC1, followed by Chl-a (19.89%). The PO 4 triggers the bloom formation and also correlates to the higher concentrations of Chl-a in the bloom locations. The bloom concentration ranges from 9553 to 12,235 trichomes L -1 . The bloom intensity has shown a significant positive correlation with Chl-a (r = 0.77), NO 3 (r = 0.56), and PO 4 (r = 0.30), but a negative correlation was noticed with DO (r =  - 0.63) and pH (r =  - 0.49). The study also initiates a way forward research investigation on ocean-color technologies to identify and monitor blooms and climate change-driven factors for bloom formation. We determined the potentially algal-available P (Paa ) in pulp and paper mill effluents by two bioassay techniques (a dual-culture assay and a batch approach) and compared it with chemically analysed P (total P, total dissolved P, reactive P, dissolved reactive P and dissolved hydrolysable P). The mean Paa given by the dual-culture assay was within a 40% range of that given by the batch approach. The Paa obtained by both bioassays differed from total P. Dissolved reactive P appeared to be the most readily available chemical P fraction, but other P fractions also contributed to Paa . The analysis of reactive P, which involves direct staining of an unfiltered sample, best approximated the Paa given by the dual-culture assay (relative error 9%). The results suggest that assessment of eutrophying effluent P can be improved by analysing simple chemical P fractions in wastewater. The fractions to be analysed, however, may be site specific. Paper sludge, which is an industrial waste generated during the manufacture of recycled paper products, was converted into an effective phosphate (PO4 3−) sequestration agent through calcination and its removal behavior toward phosphate ion in aqueous solution was examined. Paper sludge contains mainly cellulose fibers and inorganic fillers together with coating materials such as calcite and kaolinite. The sludge was calcined at temperatures between 200 and 1000°C for 6h. Crystalline phases originally present were altered at increasing temperatures (up to 800°C) in the order kaolinite

Adverse effects of pulp and paper mill effluent on fish populations have been well documented in many countries over the last two decades. Some of the initial studies were at mills with conventional chlorine bleaching and no secondary effluent treatment. Following installation of secondary treatment, changes in bleaching technology to elemental chlorine-free bleaching, and other process changes, adverse effects on fish were reduced or eliminated at some mills. Because no two mills are exactly alike, it is difficult to predict adverse impacts of any given mill on fish populations. In 1994, a study of female white sucker ( Catostomus commersoni) in the Androscoggin River, Maine, USA, showed induction of mixed function oxidase, reductions in gonad size and plasma estradiol, and an increase in plasma testosterone in fish downstream of discharges from three large bleached kraft pulp and paper mills, and host community municipal sewage treatment plants (STP). After all three mills switched to elemental chlorine-free bleaching in the late 1990s, studies from 2001 to 2003 found that the pattern of reproductive impacts on white sucker populations measured in 1994 was not repeated. In addition, population estimates of white sucker from 2002 to 2003 using mark-recapture techniques found that densities and biomass were well within the range of those of a reference population, and of those reported in the literature for unimpacted populations. Detailed studies immediately above and below each mill/sewage treatment plant showed no evidence of reproductive effects. Al-containing CaO–SiO2–H2O phases were prepared by hydrothermal treatment of mixtures of paper sludge ash (PSA) with various silica and calcia sources and their properties were determined with particular reference to the simultaneous uptake of ammonium and phosphate ions, which are implicated in the eutrophication of lakes and ponds. After examination of various silica and calcia sources, Ca(OH)2 and SiO2 sol were selected as the most appropriate starting materials. Dry milling was found to be superior to wet milling in avoiding contamination from the milling media during mixing. Nine samples with three different Ca/Si ratios and Al2O3 contents were prepared with various mass ratios of Ca(OH)2, PSA and SiO2. The chemical compositions of the hydrothermal products of these mixtures moved towards the tieline of CaSiO3-PSA, with respect to the starting compositions. The major phase formed in all samples was poorly crystalline C–S–H(I), with hydroxysodalite also formed in the Al-containing mixtures. All the products showed a capacity for the simultaneous uptake of ammonium and phosphate ions. The saturated sorption capacities calculated from the Langmuir equation ranged from 0. 9 to 2. 4mmol/g for the ammonium ion and from 3. 3 to 5. 2mmol/g for the phosphate ion. Since the sorption capacities for both ions increased with increasing Ca contents of the product, substitution of Ca2+ for NH4 + and the formation of calcium phosphate phases such as apatite and brushite by precipitation are thought to be the main sorption mechanisms. Algal blooms usually occur in semi-closed water bodies such as lakes or estuaries; however, it has occurred frequently in the mid-downstream of the Han River (MSHR) in China since the 1990s. We made a comparative analysis of the hydrological conditions and identified the hydrological condition thresholds that induce algal blooms. From the hydrodynamic point of view, the changes and characteristics of the hydrological conditions in the MSHR were analyzed. Furthermore, the influence on the risk of algal blooms under different design water transfer schemes for the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP) was studied. The results indicated that (1) the flow in the MSHR less than 900 m 3 /s and water level in the Yangtze River higher than 14 m provided a suitable hydrological environment for diatoms multiply. (2) The flow of the MSHR showed a downtrend, while the water level of the Yangtze River showed an uptrend. There were variations in hydrological processes. Through specific IHA index analysis, the fact of flow reduction in the MSHR was demonstrated, and further indicated that algal bloom outbreak was in low flow period. (3) The water transfer in the middle route of SNWDP affected the risk probability of algal blooms. The more the amount of water transfer, the greater the risk probability of algal blooms. It was the Water Diversion Project from Yangtze River to Han River (WDPYHR) that replenished flow of the MSHR and was conducive to the prevention and control of algal bloom risk.

The Synechococcus cyanobacterial population at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography pier in La Jolla, CA, shows large increases in abundance, typically in the spring and summer followed, by rapid declines within weeks. Here we used amplicon sequencing of the ribosomal RNA internal transcribed spacer region to examine the microdiversity within this cyanobacterial genus during these blooms as well as further offshore in the Southern California coastal ecosystem (CCE). These analyses revealed numerous Synechococcus amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) and that clade and ASV composition can change over the course of blooms. We also found that a large bloom in August 2016 was highly anomalous both in its overall Synechococcus abundance and in terms of the presence of normally oligotrophic Synechococcus clade II. The dominant ASVs at the pier were found further offshore and in the California Current, but we did observe more oligotrophic ASVs and clades along with depth variation in Synechococcus diversity. We also observed that the dominant sequence variant switched during the peak of multiple Synechococcus blooms, with this switch occurring in multiple clades, but we present initial evidence that this apparent ASV switch is a physiological response rather than a change in the dominant population., (© 2020 Society for Applied Microbiology and John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Salt marshes are important natural carbon sinks with a large capacity to absorb exogenous nutrient inputs. The effects of nutrients on biogeographic productivity patterns, however, have been poorly explored in salt marshes. We conducted field surveys to examine how complex environments affect productivity of two common salt marsh plants, invasive Spartina alterniflora and native Phragmites australis, along an 18,000-km latitudinal gradient on the Chinese coastline. We harvested peak aboveground biomass as a proxy for productivity, and measured leaf functional traits (e.g., leaf area, specific leaf area [SLA], leaf nitrogen [N] and phosphorus [P]), soil nutrients (dissolved inorganic N [DIN] and available P [AP]), and salinity. We compiled data on mean annual temperature (MAT) and exogenous nutrients (both N and P). Then, we examined how these abiotic factors affect salt marsh productivity using both linear mixed effect models and structural equation modeling. Using a trait-based approach, we also examined how salt marsh productivity responds to changing environments across latitude. Exogenous nutrients (both N and P), compared with temperature and other variables (e.g., DIN, AP, salinity), were the dominant factors in explaining the biogeographic productivity patterns of both S. alterniflora and P. australis. Leaf size-related traits (e.g., leaf area), rather than leaf economic traits (e.g., SLA, leaf N and P), can be used to indicate the positive effects of exogenous nutrients on the productivity of these two species. Our results demonstrated that human eutrophication surpassed temperature as the major driver of biogeographic salt marsh productivity pattern, challenging current models in which biogeographic productivity pattern is primarily controlled by temperature. Our findings have potential broad implications for the management of S. alterniflora, which is a global invader, as it has benefited from coastal eutrophication. The objective of this study was to evaluate the phosphorus removal capacity and kinetics of several activated sludge samples taken at enhanced biological phosphorus (EBPR) removal plants. Phosphorous Accumulating Organisms (PAOs) in an EBPR system can, with the addition of volatile fatty acids and a process layout that includes an anaerobic zone followed by an aerobic zone, to accumulate phosphorus, removing it from the wastewater. Batch testing was performed on four activated sludge samples. The concentration of acetate showed a steady decrease during the uptake in the anaerobic phase in all four samples. The concentration of phosphorus increased rapidly during the release and decreased during the uptake in the aerobic phase in all four samples. The rates of phosphorus release were significantly larger than the rates of phosphorus uptake. The Pre/Acupt ratios indicated that there was a much greater presence of glycogen accumulating organisms than PAOs in the activated sludge samples, further indicating a decrease in the capacity for phosphorus uptake. For the last few decades, coastal eutrophication with the associated mass development of opportunistic macroalgae has increased on a global scale. Since the end of the 2000's, the number of studies of macroalgal blooms also increased many times. Mass occurrences of such species as Cladophora spp., Ulva spp., and Spirogyra spp. caused a necessity to improve existing methods of ecological assessment and develop new ones. There are many indices based on macroalgae and developed for marine and estuarine ecosystems. However, for correct evaluation, they demand a presence of a number of species, including perennial species from the order Fucales. This requirement cannot be satisfied in fresh or brackish waters, including some estuaries, because often, the freshwater communities are dominated by only one or two opportunistic species. The present paper defines the most relevant topics in studies of macroalgal blooms and reviews indices and metrics which can be recommended for the ecological assessment in diverse habitats influenced or dominated by opportunistic macroalgae species. For ecological assessment of opportunistic communities, according to their seasonal peculiarities, the author recommends, besides biomass, involving evaluation of algal mats (thickness, coverage) and signs of hypoxia. Under the background of increasingly serious global environmental pollution, ensuring the safety of drinking water has become one of the focuses of global attention. In this study, Meihu Reservoir, a drinking water source, was selected as the research object, and the main pollution problems and their sources were revealed through conventional water quality analysis, suitability evaluation of the drinking water source and eutrophication evaluation of the reservoir. Using modern water quality monitoring technology and methods, the paper monitors and analyzes various water quality parameters of the Meihu Reservoir. The results showed that the water quality indexes, except total nitrogen, met the class II–III standard of drinking water, and the comprehensive nutrient state index method (TLI) evaluated the reservoir, and its index met 30 ≤ TLI (∑) ≤ 50 , indicating that the reservoir belongs to the medium nutrition category. Therefore, the water quality of the reservoir has been affected by different degrees of agricultural, domestic and livestock pollution, mainly reflected in the serious excess of the total nitrogen index (the peak has reached 2.99 mg/L). The results of the on-site investigation showed that the main sources of nitrogen in the reservoir included agricultural non-point-source pollution, domestic sewage pollution, domestic garbage pollution and livestock and poultry pollution, accounting for 50.09%, 23.99%, 14.13% and 11.80% of the total load, respectively. On this basis, this paper puts forward some countermeasures for pollution control in order to provide a scientific basis and practical path for water quality protection and improvement of the Meihu Reservoir and other similar reservoirs. The trophic state of Lake Ladoga was studied during the period 1997–2019, using the Copernicus Marine Environmental Monitoring Service (CMEMS) GlobColour-merged chlorophyll-a OC5 algorithm (GlobColour CHL-OC5) satellite observations. Lake Ladoga, in general, is mesotrophic but certain parts of the lake have been eutrophic since the 1960s due to the discharge of wastewater from industrial, urban, and agricultural sources. Since then, many ecological assessments of the Lake’s state have been made. These studies have indicated that various changes are taking place in the lake and continuous monitoring of the lake is essential to update the current knowledge of its state. The aim of this study was to assess the long-term trend in chl-a in Lake Ladoga. The results showed a gradual reduction in chl-a concentration, indicating a moderate improvement. Chl-a concentrations (minimum-maximum values) varied spatially. The shallow southern shores did not show any improvement while the situation in the north is much better. The shore areas around the functioning paper mill at Pitkäranta and city of Sortavala still show high chl-a values. These findings provide a general reference on the current trophic state of Lake Ladoga that could contribute to improve policy and management strategies. It is assumed that the present warming trend of surface water may result in phytoplankton growth increase, thus partly offsetting a decrease in nutrient load. Precipitation is thought to be increasing, but the influence on water quality is less clear. Future studies could assess the current chemical composition to determine the state of water quality of Lake Ladoga.

Jellyfish play an important role in the material cycling and energy flow of food webs, and massive aggregations may have deleterious consequences for local fisheries; yet a theoretical framework of the trophic effects of jellyfish blooms on coastal fisheries is unclear. To address this knowledge gap, we assessed the trophic interactions between cooccurring bloom jellyfish and dominant fish groups (omnivorous fish and piscivorous fish) in the coastal waters of China (CWC) via stable isotope analysis; we subsequently discussed how jellyfish blooms may affect energy flow through coastal ecosystems. Our results indicate a considerable degree of trophic overlap (mean ratio > 65 %) between jellyfish and small omnivorous fish (< 10 cm), highlighting a similarity in feeding habits, while the overlap ratio decreased to <55 % of the large omnivorous fish group (> 10 cm). Relatively higher trophic levels and smaller overlaps of large omnivorous fish were found in the ecosystem with high jellyfish biomass, which suggested that they may reinforce the ontogenetic trophic shift pattern to alleviate the potential for resource competition with jellyfish under conditions of jellyfish explosion. The smallest trophic overlap (< 20 %) highlighted the strong trophic differentiation between jellyfish and piscivorous fish. Additionally, our study suggested that a massive aggregation of jellyfish can negatively influence zooplankton but may not transfer energy further up efficiently, implying a weak trophic coupling between jellyfish and upper-trophic levels in CWC ecosystems. Thus, we speculate that jellyfish play an important role in shaping pathways involved in the energy transfer of food webs and that large blooms may negatively affect fisheries through bottom-up control affecting prey availability. In general, these results hold strong potential to further improve the understanding of the trophic interactions between jellyfish and fish populations. East-Central Europe's largest shallow lake, Balaton, experienced strong eutrophication in the 1970-80s, followed by water quality improvement and oligotrophication by 2010 CE. Recently however, repeated cyanobacterial blooms occurred and warned that internal P-recycling can act similarly to external P load, therefore we need a better understanding of past water level (WL) and trophic changes in the lake. In this study we discuss the last 500-yr trophic, WL and habitat changes of the lake using paleoecological (chironomids, pollen) and geochemical (sediment chlorophyll, TOC, TS, TN, C/H ratio, major and trace element) methods. We demonstrate that the most intensive and irreversible change in the macroinvertebrate fauna occurred during the period of economic boom between the First and Second World War (∼1925-1940 CE), when large-scale built-in and leisure use of the lake has intensified. At that time, the Procladius-Microchironomus-Stempellina dominated community transformed to Procladius-Chironomus plumosus-type-Microchironomus community that coincided with land use changes, intensified erosion and water-level regulation in the lake with the maintenance of year-round high WL. This was followed by the impoverishment and population size decrease of the chironomid fauna and Procladius dominance since 1940 CE, without any recovery after 1994 CE despite the ongoing oligotrophication. Accelerated rate of change and turnover of the fauna was connected to an increase in the benthivorous fish biomass and eutrophication. The basin lost almost completely its once characteristic Stempellina species between 1927 and 1940 CE due to trophic level increase and seasonal anoxia in the Szemes Basin. Reference conditions for ecosystem improvement were assigned to 1740-1900 CE. The decomposition of macrophytes plays a crucial role in the nutrient cycles of macrophyte-dominated eutrophication lakes. While research on plant decomposition mechanisms and microbial influences has rapid developed, it is curious that plant decomposition models have remained stagnant at the single-stage model from 50 years ago, without endeavor to consider any important factors. Our research conducted in-situ experiments and identified the optimal metrics for decomposition-related microbes, thereby establishing models for microbial impacts on decomposition rates (k&#95;RDR). Using backward elimination in stepwise regression, we found that the optimal subset of independent variables-specifically Gammaproteobacteria-Q-L, Actinobacteriota-Q-L, and Ascomycota-Q-L-increased the adjusted R-squared (Ra 2 ) to 0.93, providing the best modeling for decomposition rate (p = 0.002). Additionally, k&#95;RDR can be modeled by synergic parameters of ACHB-Q-L, LDB-Q-L, and AB-Q-L for bacteria, and SFQ for fungi, albeit with a slightly lower Ra 2 of 0.7-0.9 (p < 0.01). The primary contribution of our research lies in two key aspects. Firstly, we introduced optimal metrics for modeling microbes, opting for debris surface microbes over sediment microbes, and prioritizing absolute abundance over relative abundance. Secondly, our model represents a noteworthy advancement in debris modeling. Alongside elucidating the focus and innovative aspects of our work, we also addressed existing limitations and proposed directions for future research. Viruses play a crucial role in aquatic ecosystems by regulating microbial composition and impacting biogeochemical cycling. While the response of viral diversity to the trophic status has been preliminarily explored in lake ecosystems, there is limited integrated exploration of the biogeography of viruses, host associations, and the auxiliary metabolic genes (AMGs), particularly for plateau lakes. Therefore, this research investigated the viral biogeography, virus-host association, and AMGs in the surface waters of 11 lakes varying in trophic levels (eutrophic and oligo-mesotrophic) in the Yunnan-Guizhou plateau region of China. A total of 73,105 viral operational taxonomic units were obtained from 11 samples, with 84.8 % remaining unannotated at the family level, indicating a predominance of novel viruses within these lakes. The most abundant viral family was Kyanoviridae (24.4 %), recognized as a common cyanophage. The vast majority of cyanobacteria and several eukaryotic algae were predicted as hosts for the viruses, with a lytic lifestyle predominating the life strategy of these cyanophages, implying the potential influence of the virus on algae. The viral community structure significantly correlated with both trophic status and the bacterial community. The structure equation model analysis revealed chlorophyll a was the primary factor affecting viral communities. Moreover, numerous AMGs linked to carbon metabolism, phosphorus metabolism, sulfur metabolism, and photosynthesis were found in these lakes, some of which showed virus preference for the trophic statuses, suggesting a vital role of the virus in driving biogeochemical cycling in the lake crossing different nutrient levels. In addition, a restricted presence of viruses was found to infect humans or harbor antibiotic resistance genes in the lakes, suggesting a subtle yet potential link to human health. The northwestern shelf of the Black Sea has been affected by eutrophication and bottom hypoxia since the sixties. Consequently, the macrozoobenthos has suffered a well-established decline in biodiversity. However, the nature of the current benthic communities remains questionable. From 1995 to 2017, we compiled species and abiotic data for 138 sites over the shelf. Through an appropriate multivariate analytical approach, we identified benthic community changes solely due to organic pollution variations. Our results show signs of recovery with an increase in biodiversity and proportion of species vulnerable to organic enrichment. These changes were related to a decrease in riverine loads and subsequent eutrophication. Since the 1980s, fish farming (aquaculture) has been an important contributor to Scotland's economy, but there are concerns that nutrient-rich food waste and excreta from these farms are causing eutrophication. Water quality monitoring preceding the arrival and subsequent expansion of the industry is limited. Therefore, to better understand the impacts of in-lake fish farms on the quality of freshwater ecosystems, we examined the diatom records in sediment cores from seven freshwater lochs in Scotland over a timescale of c.100-200 years, spanning the period before and after installation of the fish cages at these sites. At three lochs (A, C, E) we observed marked diatom assemblage shifts indicative of eutrophication, coincident with arrival of the fish farms, at two lochs (B, G) there was evidence of enrichment over a longer timescale although with some further enrichment occurring with the advent of the fish farms, and at the other two lochs (D, F), diatom shifts were subtle and showed no sign of eutrophication. Thus, while marked ecological shifts are shown to occur with the arrival of fish farms in some sites, this is not always the case. The natural background conditions, the scale of operations, the siting of the fish cages in relation to location of inflows and outflows, the role of flushing rate and additional sources of nutrients are discussed as potential factors for the variable impacts observed across the seven lochs. Such factors should be considered when planning future installation and expansion of fish farms to ensure sustainable development of these resources. Global climate warming and human activities have increased the magnitude and frequency of Microcystis surface blooms, posing significant threats to freshwater ecosystems and human health over recent decades. Heavy rainfall events have been reported to cause the disappearance of these blooms. Although some studies have employed turbulence models to analyze the movement characteristics of Microcystis colonies, the impact of rainfall is complex, comprehensive investigations on their vertical migration induced by short-term rainfall are still necessary. Utilizing monitoring data from eutrophic ponds and controlled simulation experiments, this study examines the short-term impacts of rainfall on the vertical distribution of Microcystis in the water column. Our findings indicate that rainfall contributes to the disappearance of Microcystis blooms by reducing the quantity of small to medium-sized colonies (0-100 μm) at the surface, subsequently decreasing the overall Microcystis biomass. As rainfall intensity increases, larger colonies migrate deeper into the water column. At a rainfall threshold of 666 mm, the difference in the median volume diameter (DV50) of Microcystis colonies between the surface and bottom reaches a minimal value of 3.09%. Post-rainfall, these colonies rapidly ascend, aggregate into larger formations, and re-establish surface blooms. The greater the rainfall, the smaller the resultant Microcystis biomass, albeit with larger aggregated colony sizes. When rainfall exceeds 222 mm, the recovery rate of surface Microcystis biomass remains below 100%, decreasing to 19.48% at 666 mm of rainfall, while the median volume diameter (DV50) of the colonies increases to 139.07% of its pre-rainfall level. Furthermore, compared to pre-rainfall conditions, the photosynthetic activity of the surface Microcystis colonies was enhanced and the secretion of EPS was increased under heavy rainfall conditions. Our results identify a critical response time of 30 min for Microcystis colonies to rainfall, after which the response ceases to intensify. Controlling lake eutrophication is a challenge. A case-specific diagnostics driven approach is recommended that will guide to a suite of measures most promising in restoration of eutrophic lakes as exemplified by the case of the shallow lake Groote Melanen, The Netherlands. A lake system analysis identified external and internal nutrient load as main reasons for poor water quality and reoccurring cyanobacterial blooms in the lake. Based on this analysis, a package of restoration measures was implemented between January 2015 and May 2016. These measures included fish removal, dredging, capping of peat rich sediment with sand and an active barrier (lanthanum-modified bentonite), diversion of two inlet streams, reconstruction of banks, and planting macrophytes. Dredging and sand capping caused temporarily elevated turbidity and suspended solids concentrations, while addition of the lanthanum-modified clay caused a temporary exceedance of the Dutch La standard for freshwaters. Diversion of inflow streams caused 35 % less water inflow and larger water level fluctuations, but the lake remained water transporting with strongly improved water quality as was revealed by comparing five years pre-intervention water quality data with five years' post-intervention data. Total phosphorus concentration in the water column was reduced by 93 % from 0.47 mg P l -1 before the intervention to 0.03 mg P l -1 after the intervention, total nitrogen by 66 % from 1.27 to 0.21 mg N l -1 , total chlorophyll-a by 75 % from 68 to 16 µg l -1 , cyanobacteria chlorophyll-a by 88 % from 32 to 4 µg l -1 . Turbidity had declined by 58 % from 23.5 FTU to on average 9.9 FTU. No cyanobacteria blooms were recorded over the entire post-intervention monitoring period (2016-2021). Submerged macrophytes increased from complete absence before intervention to around 10 %-15 % coverage after intervention. Repeated fish removal lowered the fish stock to below 100 kg ha -1 with 12 % of bream and carp remaining. Hence, the package of cohesive measures that was based on a thorough diagnosis resulted in rapidly, strongly and enduringly improved water quality. On global scale, eutrophication is one of the most prevalent environmental threats to water quality, primarily caused by elevated concentration of nutrients in wastewater. This study utilizes aluminum dross (AD), an industrial waste, to create a value-added material by improving its operational feasibility and application for removing phosphate and ammonium from water. The operational challenges of AD such as its powdered nature and effective operation under only extreme pH conditions were addressed by immobilizing in calcium alginate to form calcium alginate aluminium dross (Ca-Alg-Al dross) beads. These Ca-Alg-Al dross beads were further tested for phosphate and ammonium removal from natural wastewater in two different aqueous environment systems: (i) vertical flow constructed wetlands (VF-CWs) followed by Ca-Alg-Al dross beads fixed bed system and (ii) Ca-Alg-Al dross beads mounted floating constructed wetlands (FCW) for remediating polluted lentic ecosystems. Our results show maximum phosphate and ammonium removal of 85 ± 0.41 % and 93.44 %, respectively, in VF-CWs followed by Ca-Alg-Al dross beads fixed bed system. The Ca-Alg-Al dross beads mounted FCW system achieved maximum phosphate removal of 79.18 ± 8.56 % and ammonium removal of 65.45 ± 21.04 %. Furthermore, the treated water from the FCW system was assessed for its potential to inhibit algal growth by artificially inoculating treated water with natural algae to simulate eutrophic conditions. Interestingly, treated water from the FCW system was found capable of arresting the algal growth. Besides, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the functional groups and surface properties and probable participation of multiple mechanisms including ion exchange, electrostatic attraction, and ligand complexation for phosphate and ammonium removal. Understanding the relationship between suspended particulate matter (SPM), sediment organic C, N stable isotopes, and lake trophic state index (TSI) is essential for managing lake pollution and eutrophication. According to the δ 13 C, δ 15 N, and C/N we found that the organic C in SPM and sediment of Caohai Lake primarily originated from macrophytes, while N was sourced from chemical fertilizers, phytoplankton, and aquatic plants. Total nitrogen, total phosphorus, NO3 - -N, oxidation reduction potential, and Chl.a were identified as key factors influencing the sources and variations of SPM and sediment organic C and N stable isotopes in Caohai Lake, with a significant linear correlation observed between C, N stable isotopes, and TSI in sediments. Human-induced nutrient inputs to global coastal waters are leading to increasing nutrients and escalating eutrophication. However, how aquatic ecosystem functioning responds to these changes remains insufficiently studied. Here we report the long-term changes in the nutrient regime and planktonic ecosystem functioning in the Daya Bay, a typical subtropical semi-enclosed bay experiencing rapid economic and social development for several decades. Time-series (from 1991 to 2018) data with a mostly quarterly resolution were collected to depict long-term changes in dissolved inorganic nutrients and plankton abundances, based on which we constructed simplified abundance size spectra (SASS) and plankton abundance ratios to describe the functioning of the planktonic ecosystem. The results revealed a long-term increase in system productivity but a decrease in integrated energy transfer efficiency of the planktonic ecosystem, with rising concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN). Shifts in the nutrient regime and planktonic ecosystem functioning were detected at a tipping point or threshold around 2006-2007. The shifts were characterized by abrupt changes in the trends of nutrient (phosphate, ammonia, nitrite) concentrations, nutrient ratios (DIN/phosphate, silicate/phosphate), plankton abundance, and total plankton biomass. Compared to the nutrient regime, the planktonic ecosystem functioning shifted several years later. Overall, this study indicates that the pelagic ecosystem regime can shift significantly in response to long-term increasing input of human-induced nutrients in coastal waters such as the Daya Bay. Lake Taihu, an inland lake, frequently experiences Cyanobacterial blooms that have historically posed severe threats to its aquatic ecosystem. Combining field observations and satellite remote-sensed data, factors that influence algal bloom intensity in Lake Taihu over an eight-year period, from 2016 to 2023, are examined, and changes in phytoplankton community composition, climate, water quality, economic activities, and food web dynamics are reported. Sentinel-2 MSI data analysis reveals a dramatic decrease in Cyanobacterial blooms in 2023, with a reduction in the annual maximum bloom area of 76.90 % from 2016 values. From 2016 to 2022, the ratio of Cyanobacteria to other phytoplankton ranged 82.09 %-98.29 %, but in 2023, this dropped to 60.98 %. Concurrently, Cyanobacteria density dropped to an historic low of 2.29 × 10 7 cells/L (16.4 % of 2021 peak values). Redundancy and random forest analyses indicated that nitrogen has a greater influence on phytoplankton than phosphorus, with temperature and permanganate index being the important parameters to affect phytoplankton community structure. We attribute the decrease in Cyanobacterial blooms in Lake Taihu in 2023 to be largely caused by shifts in phytoplankton community structure, particularly the sharp decline in Microcystis sp. density, a genus often linked to bloom formation. Meteorological conditions such as reduced rainfall and wind speed during the winter and spring of 2023 also contributed to diminishing Cyanobacterial blooms. Ongoing improvements in water quality, reduced economic activities because of pandemic restrictions, and implementation of a fishing ban since 2020 have likely further contributed to reductions in bloom frequency. Currently, more and more lakes around the world are experiencing outbreaks of cyanobacterial blooms, and high-precision and rapid monitoring of the spatial distribution of algae in water bodies is an important task. Remote sensing technology is one of the effective means for monitoring algae in water bodies. Studies have shown that the Floating Algae Index (FAI) is superior to methods such as the Standardized Differential Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) in monitoring cyanobacterial blooms. However, compared to the NDVI method, the FAI method has difficulty in determining the threshold, and how to choose the threshold with the highest classification accuracy is challenging. In this study, FAI linear fitting model (FAI-L) is selected to solve the problem that FAI threshold is difficult to determine. Innovatively combine FAI index and NDVI index, and use NDVI index to find the threshold of FAI index. In order to analyze the applicability of FAI-L to extract cyanobacterial blooms, this paper selected multi-temporal Landsat8, HJ-1B, and Sentinel-2 remote sensing images as data sources, and took Chaohu Lake and Taihu Lake in China as research areas to extract cyanobacterial blooms. The results show that (1) the accuracy of extracting cyanobacterial bloom by FAI-L method is generally higher than that by NDVI and FAI. Under different data sources and different research areas, the average accuracy of extracting cyanobacterial blooms by FAI-L method is 95.13%, which is 6.98% and 18.43% higher than that by NDVI and FAI respectively. (2) The average accuracy of FAI-L method for extracting cyanobacterial blooms varies from 84.09 to 99.03%, with a standard deviation of 4.04, which is highly stable and applicable. (3) For simultaneous multi-source image data, the FAI-L method has the highest average accuracy in extracting cyanobacterial blooms, at 95.93%, which is 6.77% and 13.26% higher than NDVI and FAI methods, respectively. In this paper, it is found that FAI-L method shows high accuracy and stability in extracting cyanobacterial blooms, and it can extract the spatial distribution of cyanobacterial blooms well, which can provide a new method for monitoring cyanobacterial blooms., (© 2024. The permanent problem of formation of algal blooms in water polluted with nitrogen and phosphorus is one of the formidable environmental problems. Biochar has the potential to solve the issues related to eutrophication due to its special structure and ability to absorb the nutrients. Biochar's exceptional nutrient absorption capacity allows it to absorb excess nutrients, causing the algae to use fewer nutrients. This review deals with effective performance of biochar in reducing the effects caused by algal blooms and improving the environmental conditions. Besides, an analysis of the issues involved addresses the origins and consequences of nitrogen and phosphorus pollution, and the formation of algal blooms is also reviewed. It then delves deeply into biochar, explaining its properties, production methods, and their uses in environmental contexts. The review emphasizes that biochar can be effective in dealing with many challenges associated with environments affected by algal blooms, specifically focusing on the positive effects of biochar and algae to examine their roles in controlling algae growth. Finally, the review emphasizes new achievements and innovative ideas to foster sustainable aquatic ecosystems. The river-connected Dongting Lake (DT) and Poyang Lake (PY), and the gate-controlled Taihu Lake (TH) and Chaohu Lake (CH) are the four important lakes in the Yangtze River Basin. The comprehensive Water Quality Index (WQI), the Eutrophication Integrated Index (TLI(Σ)), and the Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model were employed to evaluate water quality and the contribution of pollution sources for these lakes. The results show that WQI for all lakes indicated generally good water quality, with DT scoring 73.52-86.18, the highest among them. During the wet season, the eutrophication degree of river-connected lake was medium, and that of gate-controlled lakes was high. The surface runoff and agricultural non-point sources are the main pollution sources for both types of lakes, but their impact is more pronounced in gate-controlled lakes during the wet season. The deep-water area in the central Bohai Sea (BS) serves as a spawning ground and nursery for fish, shrimp, and crabs. Frequent hypoxia will affect the ecological environment in the central BS. Data from an on-site investigation of the central BS in the spring and summer of 2022 were used to analyze the relevant factors generating the occurrence of hypoxia in the central BS through the eutrophication index E, apparent oxygen consumption (AOU), and Spearman correlation. The hypoxia area was largely distributed in the study area's deep water section, and stratification was the main cause of hypoxia at the bottom. Organic matter mineralization, degradation, and biological respiration further exacerbated the hypoxia. Lanthanum-modified bentonite (LMB) combined with submerged macrophytes (SM) has been a conventional means of eutrophication management in lakes in recent years, and is one of the most important methods for P removal. However, trends in nutrients and sediment enzymes at the water-sediment interface during this process have not been systematically assessed, and there are still some gaps in how abiotic properties drive changes in enzyme activity. Here, we show changes in aquatic environmental conditions under the action of different ratios of modified bentonite (0, 10%, 20%, and 30%) in combination with SM (Vallisneria natans, Potamogeton lucens, and Hydrilla verticillate) and quantify their effects on sediment enzyme activities. The results showed that the nutrient cycling at the water-sediment interface was facilitated by the combined effect of SM and LMB, which effectively reduced the overlying water nutrient concentration, increased the sediment enzyme activity and enhanced the N cycling process. Partial least squares structural equation model (PLS-SEM) showed that sediment parameters strongly influenced changes in enzyme activity, with NO 3 -N as the main controlling factors. Phytoplankton communities are crucial components of aquatic ecosystems, and since they are highly interactive, they always form complex networks. Yet, our understanding of how interactive phytoplankton networks vary through time under changing environmental conditions is limited. Using a 29-year (339 months) long-term dataset on Lake Taihu, China, we constructed a temporal network comprising monthly sub-networks using "extended Local Similarity Analysis" and assessed how eutrophication, climate change, and restoration efforts influenced the temporal dynamics of network complexity and stability. The network architecture of phytoplankton showed strong dynamic changes with varying environments. Our results revealed cascading effects of eutrophication and climate change on phytoplankton network stability via changes in network complexity. The network stability of phytoplankton increased with average degree, modularity, and nestedness and decreased with connectance. Eutrophication (increasing nitrogen) stabilized the phytoplankton network, mainly by increasing its average degree, while climate change, i.e., warming and decreasing wind speed enhanced its stability by increasing the cohesion of phytoplankton communities directly and by decreasing the connectance of network indirectly. A remarkable shift and a major decrease in the temporal dynamics of phytoplankton network complexity (average degree, nestedness) and stability (robustness, persistence) were detected after 2007 when numerous eutrophication mitigation efforts (not all successful) were implemented, leading to simplified phytoplankton networks and reduced stability. Carbohydrates play a pivotal role in nutrient recycling and regulation of algal-bacterial interactions. Despite their ecological significance, the intricate molecular mechanisms governing regulation of phycosphere carbohydrates by bacterial taxa linked with natural algal bloom have yet to be fully elucidated. Here, a comprehensive temporal metagenomic analysis was conducted to explore the carbohydrate-active enzyme (CAZyme) genes in two discrete algal bloom microorganisms (Gymnodinium catenatum and Phaeocystis globosa) across three distinct bloom stages: pre-bloom, peak bloom, and post-bloom. Elevated levels of extracellular carbohydrates, primarily rhamnose, galactose, glucose, and arabinose, were observed during the initial and post-peak stages. The prominent CAZyme families identified-glycoside hydrolases (GH) and carbohydrate-binding modules (CBMs)-were present in both algal bloom occurrences. In the G. catenatum bloom, GH23/24 and CBM13/14 were prevalent during the pre-bloom and peak bloom stages, whereas GH2/3/30 and CBM12/24 exhibited increased prevalence during the post-bloom phase. In contrast, the P. globosa bloom had a dominance of GH13/23 and CBM19 in the initial phase, and this was succeeded by GH3/19/24/30 and CBM54 in the later stages. This gene pool variation-observed distinctly in specific genera-highlighted the dynamic structural shifts in functional resources driven by temporal alterations in available substrates. Additionally, ecological linkage analysis underscored a correlation between carbohydrates (or their related genes) and phycospheric bacteria, hinting at a pattern of bottom-up control. Phycosphere bacteria can regulate the dynamics of different algal blooms that impact marine ecosystems. Phaeocystis globosa can alternate between solitary free-living cells and colonies and the latter morphotype is dominate during blooms. The mechanisms underlying the formation of these blooms have received much attention. High throughput sequencing results showed that the bacterial community composition differed significantly between colony and solitary strains in bacterial composition and function. It was found that the genera SM1A02 and Haliea were detected only among the colony strains and contribute to ammonium accumulation in colonies, and the genus Sulfitobacter was abundant among the colony strains that were excellent at producing DMS. To clarify the wind-driven post-bloom dispersion range of Microcystis, which originally clustered on the water surface, an Individual-Based Model (IBM) of Microcystis movement considering the combined effects of wind and light was developed based on actual hydrodynamic data and Microcystis biomass. After calibrating the effects of hydrodynamics and light, 66 cases of short-term (within a week) post-bloom with satellite images from 2011 to 2017 were simulated. The results showed that there were three short-term post-bloom types: vertical reduction (VR), horizontal reduction (HR) and mixed reduction (MR). For VR type, the cyanobacterial bloom reduction rate was rapid (>160 km 2 /day), but the dispersion range of Microcystis was limited (<2 km/day), and a larger bloom area was likely to form in the original location when wind speed decreased. For HR type, the cyanobacterial bloom reduction rate was slow (<10 km 2 /day), but Microcystis exhibited a broad dispersion range (>4 km/day), often leading to smaller, thicker, and longer-lasting cyanobacterial blooms downwind, albeit with a lower probability of occurrence.
