Hybrid nanomaterials fabricated by the heterogeneous integration of 1D (carbon nanotubes) and 2D (graphene oxide) nanomaterials showed synergy in electrical and mechanical properties. Here, we reported the infiltration of carboxylic functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (C-SWNT) into free-standing graphene oxide (GO) paper for better electrical and mechanical properties than native GO. The stacking arrangement of GO sheets and its alteration in the presence of C-SWNT were comprehensively explored through scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction. The C-SWNTs bridges between different GO sheets produce a pathway for the flow of electrical charges and provide a tougher hybrid system. The nanoscopic surface potential map reveals a higher work function of the individual functionalised SWNTs than surrounded GO sheets showing efficient charge exchange. We observed the enhanced conductivity up to 50 times and capacitance up to 3.5 times of the hybrid structure than the GO-paper. The laminate of polystyrene composites provided higher elastic modulus and mechanical strength when hybrid paper is used, thus paving the way for the exploitation of hybrid filler formulation in designing polymer composites.

This paper systematically studies the effect of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticle size on the insulation performance of nanofluid impregnated paper. Three kinds of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles with different sizes and their nanofluid impregnated papers were prepared. Environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) and infrared spectroscopy were used to analyze the combination of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles and nanofluid impregnated paper. The effect of nanoparticle size on breakdown voltage and several dielectric characteristics, e.g., permittivity, dielectric loss, of the nanofluid impregnated paper were comparatively investigated. Studies show that the Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were bound to impregnated paper fibers by O-H bonds, while the relative permittivity and dielectric loss of the nanofluid impregnated papers were increased. Meanwhile, the increase of trap depth, caused by the nanoparticles, can trap the electric charge and improve the breakdown strength. The test results show that the direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) breakdown voltages of nanofluid impregnated paper increased by 9.1% and 10.0% compared to FR3 nanofluid impregnated paper, respectively.

This study aims to explore the channel patterns and the characteristic parameters of the zigzag microchannel based on microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs), in which the mixing efficiency and speed can be greatly enhanced. Better mixing of the solutions was obtained by adding a simple directing electric field to the optimized structure of the zigzag microchannel on paper-based chips instead of the traditional complex devices. A higher mixing efficiency was reached when the direct-current (DC) power supply reached 20 V. Meanwhile, a piezoelectric transducer (PZT) driver was used in the mixing experiment with the paper-based zigzag microchannel. The results show that the mixing efficiency reached a maximum value when the input voltage and frequency were 30 V and 150 Hz, respectively. These paper-based devices meet the requirements of the biochemical analysis field because they are low cost, easy to operate, and have high efficiencies, giving them good prospects for future applications. Polyaniline (PANI) with/without polystyrene (PS), was successfully manufactured in the occurrence of dispersed pulp fibers via the oxidative polymerization reaction of aniline monomer to produce conductive paper sheets containing PANI, PANI/PS composites. Additionally, sliver nitrate (Ag-NO3) was added by varied loadings to the oxidative polymerization of aniline monomer to provide sliver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) emptied into the prepared paper sheets. The prepared paper sheets were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared spectroscopy (IR), the mechanical properties of the prepared paper sheets were evaluated. Moreover, the electrical conductivity and biological studies such as cellulases assay, Microorganism & culture condition and detection of the released of Ag-NPs were evaluated. Furthermore, the prepared paper sheets were displayed good antibacterial properties contrary to gram positive and gram negative bacteria. We present a new paper-based isotachophoresis (ITP) device design for focusing DNA samples having lengths ranging from 23 to at least 1517 bp. DNA is concentrated by more than two orders of magnitude within 4 min. The key component of this device is a 2 mm-long, 2 mm-wide circular paper channel formed by concertina folding a paper strip and aligning the circular paper zones on each layer. Due to the short channel length, a high electric field of ~16 kV m(-1) is easily generated in the paper channel using two 9 V batteries. The multilayer architecture also enables convenient reclamation and analysis of the sample after ITP focusing by simply opening the origami paper and cutting out the desired layers. We profiled the electric field in the origami paper channel during ITP experiments using a nonfocusing fluorescent tracer. The result showed that focusing relied on formation and subsequent movement of a sharp electric field boundary between the leading and trailing electrolyte.

Highly porous polypyrrole (PPy)-nanocellulose paper sheets have been evaluated as inexpensive and disposable electrochemically controlled three-dimensional solid phase extraction materials. The composites, which had a total anion exchange capacity of about 1.1 mol kg(-1), were used for extraction and subsequent release of negatively charged fluorophore tagged DNA oligomers via galvanostatic oxidation and reduction of a 30-50 nm conformal PPy layer on the cellulose substrate. The ion exchange capacity, which was, at least, two orders of magnitude higher than those previously reached in electrochemically controlled extraction, originated from the high surface area (i.e. 80 m(2) g(-1)) of the porous composites and the thin PPy layer which ensured excellent access to the ion exchange material. This enabled the extractions to be carried out faster and with better control of the PPy charge than with previously employed approaches. Experiments in equimolar mixtures of (dT)(6), (dT)(20), and (dT)(40) DNA oligomers showed that all oligomers could be extracted, and that the smallest oligomer was preferentially released with an efficiency of up to 40% during the reduction of the PPy layer. These results indicate that the present material is very promising for the development of inexpensive and efficient electrochemically controlled ion-exchange membranes for batch-wise extraction of biomolecules.

The high demand for flexible electroconductive elements, such as organic coatings, is associated with the development of IoT devices, wearable health monitoring devices, and similar devices. To meet cost and environmental standards, the ideal coating should use the richness of nature, be biodegradable, and be water soluble to avoid the use of harmful organic solvents. All of these criteria are met by the composite coating consisting of sodium lignosulfonate (SLS) and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Furthermore, the SLS/CNT coating on paper substrates is highly electroconductive, hydrophobic, and resistant to annealing, high humidity, bending, and scratching. The electrical conductivity of the SLS/CNT coating varies depending on the substrate used, but it is highly conductive and resistant on all substrates tested. Most importantly, due to the use of abundant and mass produced and cheap materials, the price of a coating containing 77 wt% SLS and 23 wt% CNT, with a sheet resistance of 113 Ω/sq is estimated to be around 2.05 EUR/m2. This coating can be especially beneficial for large-scale applications, such as heating films. Abstract Inkjet printing is an established technology that has been revisited in recent years for the low-cost and easy production of electrical sensing and biosensing systems. With this technique, it is possible to produce flexible microsystems on eco-compatible substrates such as polymers and paper. In this sense, we investigated the printing performances of a common office inkjet printer and of a commercial conducting ink, to produce aptamer-based electrochemical biosensors for antibiotics detection. During our analysis we characterized both the morphological and electrical properties of the printed electrodes, considering also their stability over time and tuning all the parameters to obtain reproducible micrometric systems. The produced devices proved to be able to undergo aptamer functionalization and to detect Ampicillin, a common used antibiotic, in few minutes with a LOD of 10 μg/ml in milk. Therefore, in this preliminary work we demonstrated the feasibility of low-cost customized inkjet-printed biosensors, and their possible use to prevent both antibiotic contaminations and antibiotic resistance development. Commercial inkjet-printers from manufacturers like Epson or Brother can be used for rapid prototype printing conductive traces onto paper or flexible PET substrates by using nanoparticle based dispersions. The surface coating of the substrate influences the attainable electrical conductivity and dielectric permittivity as well as the loss tangent, which are important parameters for developing inkjet-printed microwave circuits on paper substrates. For characterizing the permittivity conventional methods are using microstrip ring or microstrip transmission line resonators that require the printing of two electrically conductive layers. In the proposed paper, a novel method is introduced to determine the relative permittivity and loss tangent via a coplanar waveguide resonator realized on a single layer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Here we report a new conductivity sensing mechanism using a closed bipolar electrode (BPE) system for the first time. Briefly, the voltage dropping across the ECL reporting cell will change with the sample conductivity of the analytes cell in a closed bipolar system. Thus, a quantitative relation between the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) response and the sample conductivity is established. Based on this principle, chemicals those are not electroactive materials and do not participate in the ECL process can be detected now, which greatly expands the application range of the BPE and the powerful ECL technique. Then a paper-based bipolar ECL conductivity sensing platform was constructed and carefully characterized, and the results proved the rationality of this newly-proposed bipolar conductivity sensing mechanism. More importantly, this design is also a universal sensing platform, suitable for all the electrolytes without electroactivity (newly proposed), electroactive chemicals and chemicals directly related to the ECL reaction. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the composting performance of anaerobically treated palm oil mill effluent (AnPOME) mixed with paper and grass clippings. Methods: Composting was conducted using a laboratory scale system for 40 days. Several parameters were determined: temperature, mass reduction, pH, electrical conductivity, colour, zeta potential, phytotoxicity and final compost nutrients. Results: The moisture content and compost mass were reduced by 24 and 18 %, respectively. Both final compost pH value and electrical conductivity were found to increase in value. Colour (measured as PtCo) was not suitable as a maturity indicator. The negative zeta potential values decreased from −12.25 to −21.80 mV. The phytotoxicity of the compost mixture was found to decrease in value during the process and the final nutrient value of the compost indicates its suitability as a soil conditioner. Conclusions: From this study, we conclude that the addition of paper and grass clippings can be a potential substrate to be composted with anaerobically treated palm oil mill effluent (AnPOME). In this paper, the influence of partial discharges (PD) on the subsequent dielectric properties of oil-impregnated paper (OIP) is investigated. Dielectric frequency response (DFR) of OIP is investigated at varied levels of moisture, thermal aging, temperature, oil conductivity and electrode material, to allow comparison of these influences. It is shown that PD activity inside OIP can significantly change the real and imaginary parts of permittivity of the paper layers, especially in the frequency range below 100 Hz. It is shown that even if the PD activity is concentrated on a few percent of the test sample, the real part of permittivity measured on the entire sample after a few tens of hours of PD activity can increase up to 10 times at very low frequencies (∼ 1 mHz) and the imaginary part of the permittivity can increase up to 100 times at low frequencies (∼ 1 Hz). The change of the real and imaginary parts of permittivity due to PD activity is permanent. It is very similar to the change caused by thermal aging, and somewhat similar to the change caused by moisture and higher oil conductivity. It is also shown that the dissipation factor of OIP in contact with copper and brass increases, even in the absence of PD, but contact with aluminum and stainless steel has no influence on DFR of OIP. The results suggest that the influence of PD can be significant when estimating the moisture content or the level of thermal aging of OIP with DFR method. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Poly(ethyleneimine)-TiO-anthocyanin modified cellulose fiber sheets were prepared as a support material for dye-sensitized solar cells. The study is focused on the effects of different anthocyanins on the photo-induced changes and contact relaxation of the surface AC-conductivity of the papers. The anthocyanins were extracted from purple cabbage, beet-root, plum peel, red vine and red currant juice. The results showed that there were pronounced contact relaxation effects at the interfaces between alumina electrode and the papers, which were further affected by the presence of anthocyanins. The electrode effects are mainly manifested by a decrease in conductance, which falls by about 30 % from its initial value about 400 min after the beginning of the experiment carried out in the dark. The illumination of the samples induces an increase in the magnitude of the observed changes in conductance but does not affect the nature of the relaxation processes. By estimating the temperature coefficients of conductivity of the papers and the changes in temperature during the illumination of the samples, we succeeded to separate the effects of heating from the total effects of illumination on the conductance and susceptance of the papers. Abstract: Paper supports were used to develop a simple, inexpensive, fast and sensitive electrochemical immunosensor for the analysis of antibiotic residues in milk samples, where single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and a simple dip–dry coating method were employed to prepare the highly sensitive biosensor. Well-dispersed SWNTs were impregnated with an antibody against neomycin to obtain a composite coating solution, followed by dipping the filtration paper in the solution to fabricate the sensitive biosensor which had high electrical conductivity. Based on the impedance change in the entire paper supported biosensor with increased concentrations of neomycin, the limit detection of the optimized method was 0.04ngmL−1 and a linear detection range from 0.2 to 125ngmL−1, well below the European Union regulations for neomycin in this matrix. This paper supported biosensor was applied to determine neomycin in milk samples after a simple sample treatment, with spiked recoveries which ranged from 93.25 to 110.47%. A variety of antibiotic residues in milk samples could be determined following similar sensor preparation. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Results of Frequency Domain Spectroscopy measurements are known to be largely influenced by environmental conditions, such as the temperature. Because field measurements, last hours after de-energizing the transformer, the ambient temperature may affect the results. Especially in cold regions of the world, extreme care are required to interpret the results when performing tests at relatively low surrounding temperatures. A better understanding and analysis of the dielectric test results are therefore only possible with a clear understanding of the physical behavior of the insulation system in response to the ambient conditions. In this contribution, the dielectric behavior of a composite oil paper insulation system has been explained from the properties of Debye basic model. A series of experiments have been performed under controlled laboratory conditions with preset moisture content inside the insulation. The equivalent circuit parameters of a laboratory made oil paper condenser bushing model were obtained using a non-linear optimization procedure. Since the dielectric parameters values are geometry dependent, poles, calculated from resistances and capacitances, were used as they are independent of the geometry. Dielectric response is a non-invasive diagnostic method with a potential to give information about the status of the solid insulation in a power transformer. To investigate what conditions the method can and cannot reveal, frequency domain spectroscopy has been applied to oil-impregnated paper and pressboard with and without moisture and/or acids added, and to paper at various stages of aging. Water and carboxylic acids are important aging indicators. It is found that moisture is clearly detectable. Also low molecular weight carboxylic acids will affect the dielectric response in a way similar to moisture, but high concentrations are needed for a contribution comparable to that of moisture. It is difficult to tell moisture and acids apart from the responses obtained. High molecular weight carboxylic acids make little or no contribution to the dielectric response of the solid insulation in a paper/pressboard — oil system. Abstract: This paper reports sintering condition effect on an ink-jet printed conductive pattern of silver ink made on a cellulose paper. To fabricate the conductive pattern on the cellulose paper, silver ink is ink-jet printed and the influence of sintering temperature and time is investigated in terms of electrical resistivity and morphology by using scanning electron microscope and atomic force microscope. Two-level baking process composed of soft baking and hard baking is found to be effective for silver nanoparticle network. The sintering temperature and time are strongly associated with the conductivity of the ink-jet printed pattern. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
