These proceedings are divided into two major sections. Section I contains papers based on original research and thought and are intended as examples of products of rigorous scholarship. This section is subdivided into three subsections covering the future, the present, and the past. Papers appearing in this section were reviewed by at least two researchers selected for their expertise relative to the article being examined. Twelve papers appear in this section. The second section includes descriptive or journalistic papers and program reviews. Papers for this section are intended to be useful and of interest to environmental educators. In this document, available literature is identified and reviewed in order to determine whether there are substantiated cognitive effects associated with the use of games in the mathematics classroom. Three criteria were used for selection of the literature: the treatment was identified as a game; cognitive measures were obtained; and the dependent variables included mathematical variables. The paper observes that the study of games as an instruction-learning process in mathematics has so far been neither thorough nor systematic and no definite conclusions can be made about the use of games in teaching mathematics. This paper presents the views of three critics of higher education in America, chosen to represent the conservative, centrist, and liberal points of view. The critics are Russell Kirk (conservative), Robert Maynard Hutchins (middle ground), and Harold Taylor (liberal); and their views are presented within the framework of six concepts: (1) outlook toward man, (2) curriculum, (3) stance toward control of one's education, (4) who should have an education, (5) use or non-use of science, and (6) process. Outlook toward man ranges from "perfectibility" (students can make their own academic decisions) to "depraved" (students must be kept in line through discipline). Curriculum is viewed in a range from liberalizing to utilitarian types of courses. The control of one's education is argued from the notions of prescriptive versus free elective. The use or non-use of science in education is argued within the context of the behavioristic versus humanistic controversy, while the question of who should have an education is part of the elitist-democratic continuum considered by all critics of higher education. The final concept to be analyzed is process, that is, rationalism (in which decisions are made to conform to postulated truths) versus instrumentalism (which views the individual as the criterion for decision and process as more important than substance). This paper questions the "science of reading" as offering a secure bridge to practice and instead argues for socio-cultural grounded forms of best practicing. The paper argues for a shift from viewing curriculum as generic and standardized to viewing it as particular and generative--requiring formative and dynamic approaches to design. It requires tantamount to a shift from best practices to best practicing in concert with teachers assuming a position as cultural workers and learners.

Issues and challenges which must be dealt with in the rapidly changing physical education disciplines and professions are discussed. Subjects include overviews of the development of educational philosophies, contemporary problems, and curriculum. Physiological, psychological, administrative, and sociological views are expressed concerning the challenge of change in physical education. (CJ)

This paper explores three simple data manipulation techniques (synthesis, augmentation, curriculum) for improving abstractive summarization models without the need for any additional data. We introduce a method of data synthesis with paraphrasing, a data augmentation technique with sample mixing, and curriculum learning with two new difficulty metrics based on specificity and abstractiveness. We conduct experiments to show that these three techniques can help improve abstractive summarization across two summarization models and two different small datasets. Furthermore, we show that these techniques can improve performance when applied in isolation and when combined.
