Using 5-minute high frequency data from the Chinese stock market, we employ a non-parametric method to estimate Fama-French portfolio realized jumps and investigate whether the estimated positive, negative and sign realized jumps could forecast or explain the cross-sectional stock returns. The Fama-MacBeth regression results show that not only have the realized jump components and the continuous volatility been compensated with risk premium, but also that the negative jump risk, the positive jump risk and the sign jump risk, to some extent, could explain the return of the stock portfolios. The main purpose of this paper is to explore the cross-sectional relationship between security returns and beta, size and book-to-market equity in the Shanghai A-share market. This study takes place during the period January 1997-December 2006. The methodology of Fama and French (J Finance 51:55-84, and Pettengill et al. (J Financial Quant Anal 30:101-116, is adopted. The Results show no evidence of an unconditional relationship between beta and returns. However, a conditional relationship is found when the data is split into up and down markets. The relationship holds even in the presence of size and book-to-market equity. Various studies have confirmed the existence of jumps in different financial markets. However, there is sparse theoretical or empirical effort to examine the dynamic relation between jump risk and cross-sectional expected stock returns. We follow a stylized SDF-based diffusion-jump model to examine its testable implications about the relation between cross-section expected excess returns and variations in jump intensities across stocks. The zero-cost portfolio, exploiting the return spreads between the top and bottom decile portfolios formed on jump intensity, could earn an annualized return as high as 24% with an annualized Sharpe ratio of 1.67. A Fama-MacBeth test shows that stock excess returns monotonically decrease in jump intensity even after controlling for other common risk factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using a pooled cross-sectional time series approach, we evaluate profits of momentum strategies and identify the sources of profits in China's stock market. Momentum strategies generate significant and negative returns in the A-share market on investment horizons at one month and at and above nine months. In the B-share market, momentum strategies yield significant and negative returns at and above twelve months. Decomposition analysis finds that the negative returns are predominately attributed to the time series profitability of stock returns. Although momentum strategies generate significant and positive returns over the period after China opened its once foreign-restricted B-share market to domestic individual investors, the relative importance of the time series predictability and the cross-sectional variation does not change.
