The solution from linear theory for the barotropic-to-baroclinic tidal energy conversion into vertical modes is validated with numerical simulations and analytical results. The main result is the translation of the traditional critical slope condition into a modewise condition on the topographic height only. Our findings are then used for estimates of the global M2 tidal conversion into the first 10 vertical modes in the open ocean (excluding the continental shelves and slopes). We observe a rapid increase with mode number of the fraction of the World Ocean where linear theory is invalid. In terms of conversion, which is highly variable in space, this corresponds to an even more rapid increase with mode number of the fraction of the converted energy that is strongly affected by nonlinear effects. Out of the 373.6 GW of the globally integrated conversion into modes 1–10, only 241.7 GW occur in locations where linear theory is valid. While it represents 95% for mode 1, this fraction rapidly drops with mode number to reach 27% for mode 10. Moreover, for the conversion into a single mode, we show that capping the linear solution at supercritical topography is inappropriate. The southeastern Australian margin hosts a series of submarine canyons. Although the origin and evolution of canyons within the northwestern segment of the margin is relatively well studied, their quantitative morphology, interaction with longshore drift currents and slope failure remain poorly understood in the southeastern region. In this study, high-resolution bathymetry and 3D seismic reflection datasets revealed five main submarine canyons present in the central offshore Otway Basin. The canyons have V-shaped, evolving to U-shaped morphology downslope with sedimentary infill characterized by medium–high amplitudes, recognizable stratal pattern and localized chaotic seismic reflections. Analysis reveals these canyons were initiated by retrogressive slope failure on the continental slope, that once the shelf edge was reached and subsequently incised, development of the canyon heads was influenced by the shelf parallel Zeehan Current, active on the continental shelf of the region. The heads of the shelf-incised canyons preferentially migrate northwestward and were infilled by laterally accreting sedimentary packages characterized by southeast dipping seismic reflections. These indicate an early erosive phase followed by a period of deposition, a result of the prevalent eastward flowing Zeehan Current. These results have important implications for understanding of the mechanisms that control initiation and development of submarine canyons, and their morphology, both offshore southeastern Australia, and similar settings on continental margins worldwide. Antarctic Bottom Water has been warming in recent decades throughout most of the oceans and freshening in regions close to its Indian and Pacific sector sources. We assess warming rates on isobars in the eastern Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean using CTD data collected from shipboard surveys from the early 1990s through the late 2010s together with CTD data collected from Deep Argo floats deployed in the region in January 2023. We show cooling and freshening in the temperature‐salinity relation for water colder than ∼0.4°C. We further find a recent acceleration in the regional bottom water warming rate vertically averaged for pressures exceeding 3,700 dbar, with the 2017/18 to 2023/24 trend of 7.5 (±0.9) m°C yr−1 nearly triple the 1992/95 to 2023/24 trend of 2.8 (±0.2) m°C yr−1. The 0.2°C isotherm descent rate for these same time periods nearly quadruples from 7.8 to 28 m yr−1. Plain Language Summary: Cold winds blowing over polynyas (areas of ice‐free water) on the Antarctic continental shelf create sea ice, forming very cold and somewhat salty, hence very dense, waters. These dense shelf waters descend the continental slope to the abyss, mixing with adjacent waters to form Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW). AABW spreads northward from there, filling much of the global abyssal ocean as it mixes with warmer, lighter waters above. AABW has been warming on pressure surfaces, freshening and cooling on density surfaces, and reducing in volume (contracting). These changes are likely a result of melting Antarctic ice sheets, which freshen the shelf waters, making them less dense, hence less able to sink to the bottom. We compare profiles of ocean temperature and salinity in the eastern Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean collected in 2023 and 2024 by robotic freely drifting profilers to data collected from ships from the early 1990s to the late 2010s. We find all of the above listed changes, but also acceleration of the warming, with the rate from 2017/18 to 2023/24 being nearly triple the rate from 1992/95 to 2023/24. The contraction rate has nearly quadrupled. This acceleration has been predicted by high‐resolution climate model simulations. Large and diverse Eocene otolith assemblages have been described from the US Gulf and Atlantic coastal plains, various basins in Europe, and New Zealand. Here we described a highly diverse otolith association from the middle Eocene (Lutetian and Bartonian) strata of southern California, San Diego County, which was retrieved from the heritage of John E. Fitch (1918-1982) in the archives of the Ichthyology Department of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, Los Angeles, Califronia. The collection represents the first Eocene otolith assemblage described from the Northeastern Pacific and stems from two localities: the Ardath Shale at Black’s Beach in the Torrey Pines Park just south of Black’s Canyon Road and north of the Salk Fault on the Pacific shore face, and the MissionValley Formation from the west-facing graded hill just east of the Miramar Water Treatment Plant near the southern shore of Miramar Reservoir. The Ardath Shale was deposited on the deep shelf and continental slope while the Mission Valley Formation represent an inland, nearshore environment during times of the maximum transgression. A total of more than15,000 otoliths were found representing 96 species of which 53 are described as new and 12 remain in open nomenclature. The fauna of the Ardath Shale is distinctly richer containing 88 species while the one from the Miramar Reservoir site yielded 38 species. The low diversity at the Miramar Reservoir site is thought to be related to the shallow-water environment in which it was deposited whereas the high diversity at Black’s Beach reflects a mixture of shelf and bathyal fishes. In addition, 24 new otolith-based genera are established, four of which are in the category “incertae sedis”. Furthermore, five new species are described from a comparative otolith collection from the US Gulf Coast Eocene and one new species from a comparative collection from the Lutetian of Balegem in Belgium. The Eocene otolith-based fish fauna from California is assessed for its paleoecological, paleobiogeographic and evolutionary significance. Particular emphasis is directed towards the elucidation of the evolution of the early Ophidiiformes, which during the early Paleogene were predominantly adapted to warm, clastic shallow-water environments and there were competing in abundance and diversity with other percomorphs (e.g., perciforms s.l.). A warm Eocene paleobioprovince is proposed for the Californian fish fauna which is not related to today’s endemic Northwest Pacific fish fauna along the regime of the cold-water California Current. Meltwater from the Greenland Ice Sheet can alter the continental shelf/slope circulation and cross-shelf freshwater fluxes and limit deep convection in adjacent basins through surface freshening. We explore the impacts on the West Greenland Current and eastern Labrador Sea with different vertical distributions of the meltwater forcing. In this study, we present the results from global coupled ocean/sea ice simulations, forced with atmospheric reanalysis, that are mesoscale eddy-active (∼2–3-km horizontal spacing) and eddy-permitting (∼6–7-km horizontal spacing) in the study region. We compare the West Greenland Current in mesoscale eddy-active and eddy-permitting without meltwater to highlight the role of small-scale features. The mesoscale eddy-active configuration is then used to assess the change in the eastern Labrador Sea when meltwater is added to the surface or vertically distributed to account for mixing within fjords. In both simulations with meltwater, the West Greenland and West Greenland Coastal Currents are faster than in the simulation with no meltwater; their mean surface speeds are the highest in the vertical distribution case. In the latter case, there is enhanced baroclinic conversion at the shelf break compared to the simulation with no meltwater. When meltwater is vertically distributed, there is an increase in baroclinic conversion at the shelf break associated with increased eddy kinetic energy. In addition, in the eastern Labrador Sea, the salinity is lower and the meltwater volume is greater when meltwater is vertically distributed. Therefore, the West Greenland Current is sensitive to how meltwater is added to the ocean with implications for the freshening of the Labrador Sea. Significance Statement: Our goal is to understand how the flux of freshwater across the West Greenland continental slope into the Labrador Sea is modified by meltwater from the Greenland Ice Sheet. We compare the simulations of the ocean that capture key dynamics along the West Greenland continental slope that have no meltwater, meltwater added to the ocean surface, and meltwater distributed vertically to represent the mixing within fjords. When meltwater is added, the currents along the continental slope are faster, with the greatest increase when meltwater is vertically distributed. In that case, there is enhanced freshening of the Labrador Sea because modified density gradients generate more eddies. Growing evidence suggests that complex spatial structure occurs within the Scotian Shelf and southern Grand Banks (SSGB) Atlantic halibut stock, yet large knowledge gaps remain about diversity of migratory and spawning behaviors. Here, 71 pop-up satellite archival tags were deployed on large Atlantic halibut (FL: 87–166 cm) between 2012 and 2020. Migration tracks were successfully reconstructed for 43 fish using a hidden Markov geolocation model, and temperature and depth time series were available for an additional nine fish (total n = 52). Five migratory behavior categories were identified: shelf residency, slope residency, shelf-channel migration, shelf-slope migration, and dispersal. High-resolution data for four of 20 physically recovered tags provided evidence of putative spawning behavior in deep channels on the continental shelf and along the continental slope between January and February. Additionally, four halibut displayed previously undocumented periods of sustained, oscillatory vertical movements along the continental slope between November and February. The high migratory diversity observed in this study provides support for the existence of multiple resident and migratory contingents in the SSGB stock in the apparent absence of significant genetic structure. Myctophids are central in ocean food webs, yet knowledge of the ecology of larval stages is sparse. We investigated if larval feeding ecology is different in continental shelf break waters compared to waters off oceanic islands in the western Tropical Atlantic. The larvae were collected through diurnal and nocturnal oblique hauls using a Bongo net and stomach contents were analyzed. The larvae ranged between 2.27 and 16.5 mm in standard length. Diet composition was different in the slope and islands (Permutational Multivariate Analysis of Variance (PERMANOVA), P  < 0.001). Diatoms (mainly Thalassiosira spp. and fragments of diatoms) were numerically important in the diet at the slope site (69% of relative importance). Copepods were the most relevant prey (71% of relative importance) near the islands. Copepods were the biomass-dominant dietary item at both areas, alongside ostracods near the islands. Smaller prey items were more important for smaller larvae, particularly those measuring up to 4 mm. Larger prey became relatively more important as the larvae grew to at least 8 mm. The use of 234Th–238U disequilibrium has been widely employed to estimate the sinking flux of particulate organic carbon (POC) from the upper sea and ocean. Here, the deficits of 234Th relative to 238U in the water column and the carbon isotope signature (δ13C) of POC in the East China Sea (ECS) Shelf were measured, which was used to distinguish the fraction of marine and terrestrial POC export fluxes. In the ECS Shelf, very strong deficits of 234Th relative to 238U were observed throughout the water column, with 234Th/238U activity ratios ranging from 0.158 ± 0.045 to 0.904 ± 0.068 (averaging 0.426 ± 0.159). The residence times of particle reactive radionuclide 234Th (τTh–T) in the ECS shelf water varied between 9 and 44 days, which is significantly shorter than that in the continental slope area or the basin area. This phenomenon indicates that there is a more rapid particle scavenging process in the ECS shelf water compared to the continental slope and basin upper water. By applying a two-end-member mixing model based on the δ13C, the fraction of terrestrial POC was estimated to be 0 to 74% (mean: 30 ± 22%) and the fraction of marine POC was in the range of 25% to 100% (mean: 70 ± 22%). Fluxes of marine and terrestrial POC settling to the seafloor exhibited significant spatial differences among different stations, ranging from 11 to 129 mmol C/m2/day and from 2.6 to 38 mmol C/m2/day, respectively. The averaged terrestrial POC fluxes in the southern and northern ECS Shelf were similar (~ 21 to 24 mmol C/m2/day), while the marine POC fluxes in the north (86 ± 37 mmol C/m2/day) were approximately four times higher than those in the south (26 ± 20 mmol C/m2/day). Interestingly, the estimated export flux of both marine and terrestrial POC were approximately one order of magnitude higher than the previously reported burial fluxes of POC (ranging from 1.1 ± 0.1 to 11.4 ± 1.1 mmol C/m2/day) in the underlying bottom sediments, indicating that the majority (> 90%) of both terrestrial and marine POC exported from the upper water column are degraded in the sediments of the ECS Shelf. This "carbon missing" phenomenon can greatly be attributed to rapid decomposition by other processes (including microbial reworking, cross-shelf transport, and possible consumption by benthic organisms). Our findings highlight the dynamic nature of carbon cycling in the continental shelf and the need for further research to understand these processes and improve carbon budget assessments. The east coast of India is highly prone to devastating winds, torrential rainfall, and storm surges caused by tropical cyclones. The storm surge is affected by ocean basin characteristics involving the width and slope of the continental shelf. The bed roughness plays a major role in surge formation. The east coast of India is characterized by a broader shelf in the north and a narrow shelf in the south. This paper uses a hybrid Finite Volume Method–Finite Element Method based Shallow water equation (SWE) solver to predict the storm surges during different cyclone events, and the roughness parameter Manning's n is used in bed friction calculations. The bottom friction coefficient parameterization involving bed roughness is used to calibrate the resistance to flow in the numerical model. The calibration exercises are carried out with different values of n for each surge simulations for different cyclones to predict the surface elevation. Different statistical parameters against the measured values are used to analyze the impact of varying n values on predicted surge levels, and the most suitable n value is carefully chosen. The relationship between n and the bed slope is established as an expression, to replace the formulations involving Manning's n, thereby minimizing the usual computational efforts. The Antarctic Slope Front and the associated Antarctic Slope Current dynamically regulate the exchanges of heat across the continental shelf break around Antarctica. Where the front is weak, relatively warm deep waters reach the ice shelf cavities, contributing to basal melting and ultimately affecting sea level rise. Here, we present new 2017–2021 records from two moorings deployed on the upper continental slope (530 and 738 m depth) just upstream of the Filchner Trough in the southeastern Weddell Sea. The structure and seasonal variability of the frontal system in this region, central to the inflow of warm water toward the large Filchner‐Ronne Ice Shelf, is previously undescribed. We use the records to describe the mean state and the seasonal variability of the regional hydrography and the southern part of the Antarctic Slope Current. We find that (a) the current is, contrary to previous assumptions, bottom‐enhanced, (b) the isotherms slope upwards toward the shelf break, and more so for warmer isotherms, and (c) the monthly mean thermocline depth is shallowest in February‐March and deepest in May‐June while (d) the current is strongest in April‐June. On monthly timescales, we show that (e) positive temperature anomalies of the de‐seasoned records are associated with weaker‐than‐average currents. We propose that the upward‐sloping isotherms are linked to the local topography and conservation of potential vorticity. Our results contribute to the understanding of how warm ocean waters propagate southward and potentially affect basal melt rates at the Filchner‐Ronne Ice Shelf. Plain Language Summary: Melting at the base of the Filchner‐Ronne Ice Shelf in the southeastern Weddell Sea is predicted to increase dramatically. The melt occurs within the ice shelf cavity filled with seawater, and the heat needed to melt the ice comes from warm water from the deep ocean. The warm water is carried toward the cavities over the relatively shallow continental shelves by ocean currents. The Antarctic Slope Current, a current that flows along the continental slope between cold and warm water masses, limits the amount of warm water that enters the continental shelf. Here, we use new four year‐long mooring records from the upper part of the continental slope north of the Filchner‐Ronne Ice Shelf and just east of the Filchner Trough to describe how the current changes with the season and how its vertical structure evolves throughout the year. We find that the warm water is lifted up toward the shelf break and suggest that this is linked to the presence of the Filchner Trough. An improved understanding of the dynamics of the Antarctic Slope Current in the region will allow us to better evaluate the potential for dramatic changes to the system in the future. In current practices of determining continental shelf area, the measured sediment thickness data do not effectively reflect the distribution of sediments across the area due to its dispersed nature. This issue raises potential limitations in unknown optimal survey line layout strategies for maximizing the posterior determination area. This paper adopts the binary search algorithm, relies on existing sediment thickness grid data, and uses geodetic formulas to build an ellipsoidal surface grid distance calculation model. This model quickly screens potential areas for the 1% sediment thickness line candidate points set. By constraining the azimuth parameter values during the construction process of the ellipsoidal point feature buffer zones, efficiently select the candidate points set for the 1% sediment thickness line. Furthermore, by elucidating the essential meanings of points on the formula limit and combining the candidate points set of the foot of the continental slope (FOS)+60 n mile line, the polygon minimal convex hull construction technique and a baseline points optimization algorithm with a length threshold are used to efficiently select points on formula limit. Experimental results demonstrate that this method can effectively assist coastal states in optimizing the determination of continental shelf area to the fullest extent under the length threshold requirements of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Experiments have proven that compared to the traditional intersection method, the method presented in this paper can help coastal countries delineate a larger continental shelf area. The structure of the Antarctic Slope Current at the continental shelf is crucial in governing the poleward transport of warm water. Canyons on the continental slope may provide a pathway for warm water to cross the slope current and intrude onto the continental shelf underneath ice shelves, which can increase rates of ice shelf melting, leading to reduced buttressing of ice shelves, accelerating glacial flow and hence increased sea level rise. Observations and modeling studies of the Antarctic Slope Current and cross-shelf warm water intrusions are limited, particularly in the East Antarctica region. To explore this topic, an idealized configuration of the Antarctic Slope Current is developed, using an eddy-resolving isopycnal model that emulates the dynamics and topography of the East Antarctic sector. Warm water intrusions via canyons are found to occur in discrete episodes of large onshore flow induced by eddies, even in the absence of any temporal variability in external forcings, demonstrating the intrinsic nature of these intrusions to the slope current system. Canyon width is found to play a key role in modulating cross-shelf exchanges; warm water transport through narrower canyons is more irregular than transport through wider canyons. The intrinsically episodic cross-shelf transport is found to be driven by feedbacks between wind energy input and eddy generation in the Antarctic Slope Current. Improved understanding of the intrinsic variability of warm water intrusions can help guide future observational and modeling studies in the analysis of eddy impacts on Antarctic shelf circulation. Picophytoplankton are a ubiquitous component of marine plankton communities and are expected to be favored by global increases in seawater temperature and stratification associated with climate change. Eukaryotic and prokaryotic picophytoplankton have distinct ecology, and global models predict that the two groups will respond differently to future climate scenarios. At a nearshore observatory on the Northeast US Shelf, however, decades of year‐round monitoring have shown these two groups to be highly synchronized in their responses to environmental variability. To reconcile the differences between regional and global predictions for picophytoplankton dynamics, we here investigate the picophytoplankton community across the continental shelf gradient from the nearshore observatory to the continental slope. We analyze flow cytometry data from 22 research cruises, comparing the response of picoeukaryote and Synechococcus communities to environmental variability across time and space. We find that the mechanisms controlling picophytoplankton abundance differ across taxa, season, and distance from shore. Like the prokaryote, Synechococcus, picoeukaryote division rates are limited nearshore by low temperatures in winter and spring, and higher temperatures offshore lead to an earlier spring bloom. Unlike Synechococcus, picoeukaryote concentration in summer decreases dramatically in offshore surface waters and exhibits deeper subsurface maxima. The offshore picoeukaryote community appears to be nutrient limited in the summer and subject to much greater loss rates than Synechococcus. This work both produces and demonstrates the necessity of taxon‐ and site‐specific knowledge for accurately predicting the responses of picophytoplankton to ongoing environmental change. Widespread hypoxia occurs seasonally across the Oregon continental shelf, and the duration, intensity, and frequency of hypoxic events have increased in recent years. In hypoxic regions, iron reduction can liberate dissolved Fe(II) from continental shelf sediments. Fe(II) was measured in the water column across the continental shelf and slope on the Oregon coast during summer 2022 using both a trace metal clean rosette and a high‐resolution benthic gradient sampler. In the summer, Fe(II) concentrations were exceptionally high (40–60 nM) within bottom waters and ubiquitous across the Oregon shelf, reflecting the low oxygen condition (40–70 μM) at that time. The observed inverse correlation between Fe(II) and bottom water oxygen concentrations is in agreement with expectations based on previous work that demonstrates oxygen is a major determinant of benthic Fe fluxes. Rapid attenuation of Fe(II) from the benthic boundary layer (within 1 m of the seafloor) probably reflects efficient cross‐shelf advection. One region, centered around Heceta Bank (~ 44°N) acts a hotspot for Fe release on the Oregon continental shelf, likely due to its semi‐retentive nature and high percent mud content in sediment. The results suggest that hypoxia is an important determinant of the inventory of iron is Oregon shelf waters and thus ultimately controls the importance of continental margin‐derived iron to the interior of the North Pacific Basin. The acoustic properties of seafloor sediments on continental slopes play a crucial role in underwater acoustic propagation, communication, and detection. To investigate the acoustic characteristics and spatial distribution patterns of sediments on the continental slope, a geoacoustic experiment was conducted in the northwestern South China Sea. The experiment covered two sections: one crossing the shelf and slope in the downslope direction, and the other near the shelf break in the along-slope direction. In situ techniques, sediment sampling, and laboratory measurements were used to acquire data on sediment acoustic properties (such as sound speed and attenuation) and physical properties (including particle composition, density, porosity, and mean grain size). The experimental findings revealed several key points: (1) Acoustic properties of shallow water coarse-grained sediments and deep-sea sediments were higher when measured in the laboratory compared to in situ measurements. (2) Relationships between measured attenuation and physical properties, as well as between sound speed and mean grain size, showed deviations from previous empirical equations. (3) Sediment acoustic and physical properties exhibited significant variations in the downslope direction, while showing gradual variations in the along-slope direction. To gain a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying spatial heterogeneity in ichthyoplankton communities in the SW Atlantic, we examined for the first time the latitudinal and continental shelf–slope gradients in ichthyoplankton structure and oceanographic features in the Campos Basin during the relaxation phase of coastal upwellings (late autumn to early winter). This region, located on SE Brazil's continental margin, is the most productive offshore oil basin in the country and has ecological relevance owing to the existence of areas that experiences mesoscale (tens to hundreds of kilometers) processes (eddies, filaments, and upwelling) caused by the interaction of continental shelf and slope circulation with deep water masses. The present study collected a total of 3892 fish eggs and 10,030 larvae from 36 sampling stations, averaging 22 eggs per 100 m3 and 56 larvae per 100 m3. A total of 250 taxa (5 for fish eggs and 248 for larvae) were identified, encompassing 80 families and 145 genera. Species distribution exhibited a considerable degree of spatial variability, which was related mostly to hydrological characteristics. In general, greater densities were associated with higher nutrient concentrations areas. Through distance‐based Redundancy Analysis, some discriminating species were found to associate with certain areas of the continental shelf characterized by colder temperatures. The ichthyoplankton distribution patterns suggested a potential influence from mesoscale oceanographic fronts, specifically those that induce upwelling of the cold and nutrient‐rich South Atlantic Central Water. The features of the concentration distribution of 238U, 232Th, and 226Ra in the surface layer in the bottom sediments of the shelf and continental slope of Svalbard are considered. The content of 226Ra, 232Th, and 238U varied in the range 22–134.3, 22.4–50.9, and 10.9–37.7 Bq/kg, respectively. The amount of 226Ra nonequilibrium with 238U (226Raex) ranged from 23 to 73% of the total 226Ra content in sediments. The maximum concentrations of 226Ra, 238U, 232Th, and 226Raex (134.3, 37.7, 50.9, and 98.2 Bq/kg, respectively) were obtained in the area of increased bioproductivity (Eagle Trough). In this zone, the relationship between the concentrations of 226Ra and 226Raex with the content of organic matter in sediment is well expressed, the correlation coefficients are R = 0.94 and 0.92, respectively, which indicates a significant contribution of the biological community to the accumulation of 226Ra in bottom sediments. The 226Ra concentration and the 226Ra excess value are negatively related to the redox potential of the sediment (R = –0.88). This pattern is also true in other areas of the Svalbard waters. In general, for the entire array of observations, the concentrations of 238U and 232Th increase with increasing content of organic carbon in the sediment (R = 0.72 and 0.7, respectively). The concentrations of 238U and 232Th decrease with increasing Ccarb content in the sediment (R = –0.79 and –0.81, respectively). The data obtained indicate the need to take into account the 226Ra excess when assessing the total natural radioactivity of marine sediments, the value of which may exceed the radioactivity of 238U and 232Th. The structural styles and magnitudes of Alpine tectonic inversion are reviewed for the Atlantic margin of southwestern (SW) Iberia, a region known for its historical earthquakes, tsunamis and associated geohazards. Reprocessed, high-quality 2D seismic data provide new images of tectonic faults, which were mapped to a depth exceeding 10 km for the first time. A total of 26 of these faults comprise syn-rift structures accommodating vertical uplift and horizontal advection (shortening) during Alpine tectonics. At the regional scale, tectonic reactivation has been marked by (a) the exhumation of parts of the present-day continental shelf, (b) local folding and thrusting of strata at the foot of the continental slope, and (c) oversteepening of syn- and post-rift sequences near reactivated faults (e.g. "passive uplift"). This work proves, for the first time, that geometric coherence dominated the growth and linkage of the 26 offshore faults mapped in SW Iberia; therefore, they are prone to reactivate as a kinematically coherent fault network. They form 100–250 km long structures, the longest of which may generate earthquakes with a momentum magnitude (Mw) of 8.0. Tectonic inversion started in the Late Cretaceous, and its magnitude is greater close to where magmatic intrusions are identified. In contrast to previous models, this work postulates that regions in which Late Mesozoic magmatism was more intense comprise thickened, harder crust and form lateral buttresses to northwest–southeast compression. Scientific bottom-trawl surveys are ecological observation programs conducted along continental shelves and slopes of seas and oceans that sample marine communities associated with the seafloor. These surveys report taxa occurrence, abundance and/or weight in space and time, and contribute to fisheries management as well as population and biodiversity research. Bottom-trawl surveys are conducted all over the world and represent a unique opportunity to understand ocean biogeography, macroecology, and global change. However, combining these data together for cross-ecosystem analyses remains challenging. Here, we present an integrated dataset of 29 publicly available bottom-trawl surveys conducted in national waters of 18 countries that are standardized and pre-processed, covering a total of 2,170 sampled fish taxa and 216,548 hauls collected from 1963 to 2021. We describe the processing steps to create the dataset, flags, and standardization methods that we developed to assist users in conducting spatio-temporal analyses with stable regional survey footprints. Results of modern studies of the earth's crust based on the gravitational data of the GOCE satellite have been used for the first time in a comparative metallogenic analysis of the geodynamic settings of the formation of polymetallic deposits in the folded frame of the Siberian and East European platforms. It is shown that deposits of the sedimentary exhalative deposits (SEDEX) type are more often located in the earth's crust with the dominating development of the lower "basaltic" layer. Pyrite copper and lead–zinc volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits, as well as some manifestations of the SEDEX type, occur in supra-subduction island-arc and accretionary settings in the crust with the dominating development of the middle "granitic" layer. Pb-Zn ores of the Mississippi Valley type (MVT) are localized in deep pericratonic sedimentary oil and gas basins on the shelf and continental slope, with no spatial relationship to the stratification of the earth's crust. The Ag polymetallic mineralization of Taimyr and the Western Verkhoyansk region are confined to deep pericratonic rift troughs on the passive continental margin. They have a similar ore-bearing environment and can be combined into a single silver polymetallic Taimyr–Western Verkhoyansk belt. The results confirm the prospects of Pb-Zn deposits in Central and Eastern Taimyr and also in the Saurey ore region (Polar Urals), indicating the need for their further research. A new genus and species of Loricifera, Scaberiloricus samba gen. et sp. nov., is described from the continental shelf and slope off Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Adult morphology remains unknown for the new entity, but information is available from three different Higgins larval instars. The Higgins larva of the new species is characterised by a bulbous head and a slender, elongate trunk, separated by a constriction behind the head. The cuticle of the thorax and the posterior part of the head is characterised by numerous longitudinal zigzag folds. The new species and genus shows greatest morphological resemblance with Wataloricus japonicus, and a phylogenetic analysis based on Higgins larval morphological characters suggests that Scaberiloricus gen. nov., Wataloricus, Tenuiloricus, and Patuloricus form a monophyletic group within Pliciloricidae. The analysis furthermore suggests that the Higgins larvae of Scaberiloricus gen. nov. and Wataloricus represent transitional, evolutionary stages towards the highly aberrant Shira larvae, found in species of Tenuiloricus and Patuloricus. Flow of dense shelf water provide an efficient mechanism for pumping CO2 to the deep ocean along the continental shelf slope, particularly around the Antarctic bottom water (AABW) formation areas where much of the global bottom water is formed. However, the contribution of the formation of AABW to sequestering anthropogenic carbon (Cant) and its consequences remain unclear. Here, we show prominent transport of Cant (25.0 ± 4.7 Tg C yr−1) into the deep ocean (>2,000 m) in four AABW formation regions around Antarctica based on an integrated observational data set (1974–2018). This maintains a lower Cant in the upper waters than that of other open oceans to sustain a stronger CO2 uptake capacity (16.9 ± 3.8 Tg C yr−1). Nevertheless, the accumulation of Cant can further trigger acidification of AABW at a rate of −0.0006 ± 0.0001 pH unit yr−1. Our findings elucidate the prominent role of AABW in controlling the Southern Ocean carbon uptake and storage to mitigate climate change, whereas its side effects (e.g., acidification) could also spread to other ocean basins via the global ocean conveyor belt. We also found strong upper‐layer CO2 uptake and a significant acidification rate in the deep waters of the Southern Ocean due to the AABW‐driven CO2 transport, which is 3 times faster than those in other deep oceans. Energetic tidal currents in the Arctic play an important role in local mixing processes, but they are primarily confined to the shelves and continental slopes due to topographic trapping north of their critical latitude. Recent studies employing idealized models have suggested that the emergence of higher harmonic tidal waves along these slopes could serve as a conduit for tidal energy transmission into the Arctic Basin. Here we provide observational support from an analysis of yearlong observations from three densely-instrumented oceanographic moorings spanning 30 km across the continental slope north of Svalbard (∼ 81.3 ∘ N). Full-depth current records show strong barotropic diurnal tidal currents, dominated by the K 1 constituent. These sub-inertial currents vary sub-seasonally and are strongest at the 700-m isobath due to the topographic trapping. Coinciding with the diurnal tide peak in summer 2019, we observe strong baroclinic semidiurnal currents exceeding 10 cm s - 1 between 500 m and 1000 m depth about 10 km further offshore at the outer mooring. In this semidiurnal band, we identify super-inertial K 2 waves, and present evidence that their frequency, timing, polarization, propagation direction and depths are consistent with the generation as higher harmonics of the topographically trapped K 1 tide at the continental slope. It is well known that strong low-mode internal tides generated in Luzon Strait propagate westward to impinge continental slopes in the northeastern South China Sea (SCS). The reflection and scattering of these internal tides including diurnal and semidiurnal components on the slopes are quantitatively investigated using two sets of mooring data and a linear internal tide model with realistic topography and stratification. Flux reflections computed from mooring data collected on the continental slopes are consistent with the linear model. Based on the results of the observations and simulations, a map of low-mode internal tide reflection and scattering coefficients along the continental margin in the northeastern SCS is revealed. On average, diurnal internal tides lose 38% of their energy to high modes (≥mode 4) that are assumed to dissipate on the slopes, transmit 28% onto the continental shelf, and reflect 31% back to the deep ocean. On the contrary, most of the semidiurnal energy (89%) transmits onto the continental shelf, and only 11% is scattered to high modes (7%) and reflected back to the deep ocean (4%). For diurnal internal tides, a large fraction of energy that is scattered to high modes and reflected back to the deep sea can be attributed to the critical–supercritical slopes, while the weak reflection for the semidiurnal energy is due to the subcritical slopes. These quantitative descriptions for evolutions of low-mode internal tides incident to the slopes provide an energy budget map on the continental slopes in the northeastern SCS. The Jan Mayen Channel is located North of the Jan Mayen Island in the Nordic Seas, and is an important gateway for the exchanges of volume, heat and freshwater between the Greenland and the Norwegian basins via the Jan Mayen Current. Based on observations from moored instruments deployed on the shelf and the continental slope of the Jan Mayen Island from August 2017 to August 2018, we document the mean state and the variability of the currents, temperature and salinity and their associated vertical structure. We found that the main feature of circulation is an intense and permanent south‐eastward jet‐like current centered at 150 m depth, located on the 400 m depth slope, with a maximum mean magnitude of 7 cm·s−1. While the velocities recorded on the shelf are largely constant in speed and direction, without any strong seasonal cycle, the moorings located offshore are capturing larger anomalies on short time scales that are likely the signature of eddies passing across the mooring array. Overall, the variability of the transport across the section is correlated with the large‐scale wind pattern over the Nordic Seas, highlighting that the Jan Mayen Current is part of a complex system of currents that operates at larger scale in the region. Deep-sea lineages are generally thought to arise from shallow-water ancestors, but this hypothesis is based on a relatively small number of taxonomic groups. Anthozoans, which include corals and sea anemones, are significant contributors to the faunal diversity of the deep sea, but the timing and mechanisms of their invasion into this biome remain elusive. Here, we reconstruct a fully resolved, time-calibrated phylogeny of 83 species in the order Antipatharia (black coral) to investigate their bathymetric evolutionary history. Our reconstruction indicates that extant black coral lineages first diversified in continental slope depths (∼250–3000 m) during the early Silurian (∼437 millions of years ago (Ma)) and subsequently radiated into, and diversified within, both continental shelf (less than 250 m) and abyssal (greater than 3000 m) habitats. Ancestral state reconstruction analysis suggests that the appearance of morphological features that enhanced the ability of black corals to acquire nutrients coincided with their invasion of novel depths. Our findings have important conservation implications for anthozoan lineages, as the loss of 'source' slope lineages could threaten millions of years of evolutionary history and confound future invasion events, thereby warranting protection. Within the program "Ecosystems of the Siberian Arctic Seas," carried out by Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sciences since 2007, studies of the water structure and spatial variability of the parameters of the carbonate system have been performed, and the intensity and direction of the carbon dioxide flux over the continental slope of the Laptev Sea and in the Vilkitsky Strait in September 2018 have been calculated. The presence of several main water masses that govern the water structure in the study area is shown. A strong spatial variability of the parameters of the carbonate system of seawater, determined by complexes of physical and chemical–biological processes, has been revealed. The intensity and direction of the carbon dioxide flux at the water–atmosphere boundary were calculated, which range from –12 to 4 mmol m–2 day–1. It was revealed that the investigated area of the outer shelf and continental slope of the Laptev Sea is an emitter of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere as of September 2018. Hydrozoans are recognized as one of the main and most characteristic zoological groups of the Antarctic benthos, despite the fact that there are still large Antarctic areas where the hydrozoan fauna is completely unknown or poorly known (e.g., the Admunsen Sea and Mary Byrd Land, in West Antarctica, and Queen Maud Land and Enderby Land, in East Antarctica). The present study contributes to a better understanding of the Ross Sea benthic hydroid fauna by studying material collected through several New Zealand expeditions mostly with RV Tangaroa. The Ross Sea includes the world's largest marine-protected area (MPA) and is of considerable biological value and importance for scientific research. Although some parts of the Ross Sea shelf have been intensively sampled, others have not, including deeper parts of the continental shelf and the slope. Forty species were found, belonging to 15 families and 19 genera. Six species, including Eudendrium megaloarmatus sp. nov., Nemertesia gelida sp. nov., Schizotricha frigida sp. nov., Symplectoscyphus pseudofrondosus sp. nov. and Symplectoscyphus tortuosus sp. nov., represent new records, bringing the number of known species in the Ross Sea to 84. Leptothecata is dominant, with 35 species, while Anthoathecata is represented by five species. Symplectoscyphidae is the most diversified family with 12 species (30%), and Symplectoscyphus is the most speciose genus with nine species (23%). Three main hydroid assemblages have been found in the studied area, two with a wide bathymetric range and relatively high species diversity, and a third with a narrow and deep bathymetric range and remarkably low hydroid diversity. The hydroid fauna is dominated by species with a wide bathymetric distribution and virtually all species are restricted to Antarctic or Antarctic/sub-Antarctic waters, with 70% endemic to the Antarctic region. The Antarctic Slope Current is guided by the topographic gradient of the Antarctic continental slope and creates a dynamical barrier between the continental shelf and the open ocean. The current's vertical structure varies around the continent affecting cross‐slope water mass exchange with consequences for Antarctic mass loss, ventilation of the deep ocean, and carbon uptake. The Antarctic Slope Current is surface‐intensified in many regions but bottom‐intensified in regions of dense overflows. This study investigates the role of dense overflows in modifying the dynamics of the bottom‐intensified flow using a 0.1° global ocean‐sea ice model. The occurrence of bottom‐intensification is tightly linked with dense overflows and bottom speeds correlate with dense overflows on interannual time scales. A lack of vertical connectivity between the bottom and surface flow, however, suggests that the along‐slope bottom water flows are coincidentally co‐located with the Antarctic Slope Current, rather than dynamically a part of the current. However, the bottom and surface flow does not vary together on interannual time scales which tells us that the two components of the Antarctic Slope Current are largely independent. The result is important as the formation of dense shelf water is expected to reduce in the future which will impact the deep flow, but not the surface component. Proton-pump rhodopsin (PPR) in marine microbes can convert solar energy to bioavailable chemical energy. Whereas bacterial PPR has been extensively studied, counterparts in microeukaryotes are less explored, and the relative importance of the two groups is poorly understood. Here, we sequenced whole-assemblage metatranscriptomes and investigated the diversity and expression dynamics of PPR in microbial eukaryotes and prokaryotes at a continental shelf and a slope site in the northern South China Sea. Data showed the whole PPRs transcript pool was dominated by Proteorhodopsins and Xanthorhodopsins, followed by Bacteriorhodopsin-like proteins, dominantly contributed by prokaryotes both in the number and expression levels of PPR unigenes, although at the continental slope station, microeukaryotes and prokaryotes contributed similarly in transcript abundance. Furthermore, eukaryotic PPRs are mainly contributed by dinoflagellates and showed significant correlation with nutrient concentrations. Green light-absorbing PPRs were mainly distributed in >3 μm organisms (including microeukaryotes and their associated bacteria), especially at surface layer at the shelf station, whereas blue light-absorbing PPRs dominated the <3 μm (mainly bacterial) communities at both study sites, especially at deeper layers at the slope station. Our study portrays a comparative PPR genotype and expression landscape for prokaryotes and eukaryotes in a subtropical marginal sea, suggesting PPR's role in niche differentiation and adaptation among marine microbes. Core samples from Ilaro BH-7 (51-202m) in the eastern Dahomey basin were subjected to standard foraminiferal biostratigraphic analysis to determine their foraminiferal assemblages, diversity, age and paleoenvironments. The benthic foraminiferal species were subjected to stable isotope analyses to identify possible records of the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum. The sediments are essentially silicified limestones, sandstones and shales/mudstones, with thin beds of siltstones. Identified foraminiferal assemblages consists of 16 planktic, 12 benthic and 2 agglutinated species belonging to two planktic foraminiferal zones, P4-P7 and P8, defined by Acarinina pentacamerata and the Pseudohastigerina micra, respectively. The planktic/benthic foraminiferal ratios varied between 22 and 84%. The Shannon-Wiener and Fisher Alpha species richness and diversity averages are 1.99 and 1.13, respectively. δ13C in benthic foraminifera showed negative to strong negative chemostratigraphic curve from 0.59 ‰ to -15.66‰, while δ18O showed slightly strong negative shift from -1.81‰ to - 6.76‰. Recovered species exhibited moderate diversity and were almost entirely calcareous assemblages, indicating restricted environmental conditions in the borehole. The sediments were assigned ages of 50.2Ma, 50.5Ma and 57.7Ma corresponding to Late Paleocene to Early Eocene. The depositional environment ranged from inner shelf to upper continental slope. The oxygen isotope revealed a synchronous negative short-term excursion with cyclic fluctuation owing to the changing water temperature in the environment. The temperature may not play significant role in the extinction of the benthic foraminifera because of their adaptation to δ18O depleted environment. Between Florida and Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, the Gulf Stream carries warm, salty waters poleward along the continental slope. This strong current abuts the edge of the South Atlantic Bight (SAB) continental shelf and is thought to influence exchange of waters between the open ocean and the shelf. Observations from a pair of instruments deployed for 19 months in the northern SAB are used here to examine the processes by which the Gulf Stream can impact this exchange. The instrument deployed on the SAB shelf edge shows that the time‐averaged along‐slope flow is surface‐intensified with only few flow reversals at low frequencies (>40‐day period). Time‐averaged cross‐slope flow is onto the SAB shelf in a lower layer and off‐shelf above. Consistent with Ekman dynamics, the magnitude of lower‐layer on‐shelf flow is correlated with the along‐slope velocity, which is in turn controlled by the position and/or transport of the Gulf Stream that flows poleward along the SAB continental slope. In the frequency band associated with downstream‐propagating wave‐like meanders of the Gulf Stream jet (2‐15 day period), currents at the shelf‐edge are characterized by surface‐intensified flow in the along‐ and cross‐slope directions. Estimates of maximum upwelling velocities associated with cyclonic frontal eddies between meander crests occasionally reach 100 m/day. Upwelling pumps deep nutrient rich waters from the slope onto the neighboring SAB shelf as cyclonic (counter‐clockwise rotating) cells of circulating waters "ride" along the onshore side of the Gulf Stream between meander crests. A second exchange process occurs within a bottom layer where friction causes water to veer onshore (from the open ocean onto the shelf). Variability in Gulf Stream strength and position along the SAB causes variability in the strength of this Ekman flow. The Gulf of Mexico supports many seabird species, yet data gaps describing species composition and habitat use are prevalent. We used vessel-based observations from the Gulf of Mexico Marine Assessment Program for Protected Species to identify and characterize distinct seabird assemblages in the northern Gulf of Mexico (within the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone; nGoM). Using cluster analysis of 17 seabird species, we identified assemblages based on seabird relative density. Vessel-based surveys documented the location, species, and number of seabirds across the nGoM between 2017–2019. For each assemblage, we identified the (co-)dominant species, spatial distribution, and areas of greater relative density. We also assessed the relationship of the total relative density within each assemblage with environmental, spatial, and temporal covariates. Of the species assessed, 76% (n = 13) breed predominantly outside the nGoM basin. We identified four seabird assemblages. Two assemblages, one dominated by black tern and the other co-dominated by northern gannet/laughing gull, occurred on the continental shelf. An assemblage dominated by sooty tern occurred along the continental slope into pelagic waters. The fourth assemblage had no dominant species, was broadly distributed, and was composed of observations with low relative density ('singles' assemblage). Differentiation of assemblages was linked to migratory patterns, residency, and breeding location. The spatial distributions and relationships of the black tern and northern gannet/laughing gull assemblages with environmental covariates indicate associations with river outflows and ports. The sooty tern assemblage overlapped an area prone to mesoscale feature formation. The singles assemblage may reflect commuting and dispersive behaviors. These findings highlight the importance of seasonal migrations and dynamic features across the seascape, shaping seabird assemblages. Considering the potential far-ranging effects of interactions with seabirds in the nGoM, awareness of these unique patterns and potential links with other fauna could inform future monitoring, research, restoration, offshore energy, and aquaculture development in this highly industrialized sea. The use of the Fluidity-ICOM model in a full non-hydrostatic formulation enables the correct investigation of fine-scale water dynamics and water transformations on the Antarctic shelf and the continental slope. A possibility of solving problems with high order of accuracy in models is determined by the use of a three-dimensional adaptive unstructured mesh with automatic refinement to given scales. The modernization of the graphical model output has made it possible to visualize reliably the details of simulated hydrophysical process development, to obtain the numerical estimates of parameters of these processes, and to verify them against unique field observation data. An original three-dimensional numerical experiment was held in the area of a shelf glade with an open water surface. In this case, the real salt (buoyancy) flux is specified, which is caused by the in-water ice formation in the glade and obtained from the actual atmospheric forcing. As a result, the convective circulation was correctly simulated as a process of forming dense water on the shelf, which then flows down the shelf and the continental slope in the form of discrete density currents. Similarity of the model geometric, dynamic, and hydrophysical characteristics of cascading with the characteristics obtained from the analysis of field observations is noted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We analyze 15‐year of observational data and a 5‐year Southern Ocean model simulation to quantify the transformation rates of Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) and the associated heat loss to the surface. This study finds that over the continental shelves of East Antarctica and the Weddell and Ross Seas, surface buoyancy fluxes transform ∼4.4 Sv of surface waters into CDW, providing a path for CDW to lose heat to the surface. In addition, ∼6.6 Sv of CDW are mixed with surface waters in the Weddell and Ross subpolar gyres. In contrast, enhanced stratification inhibits the outcropping of CDW isopycnals, reducing their transformation rates by a factor of ∼8 over the continental shelf and by a factor of ∼3 over the deeper ocean in the Amundsen and Bellingshausen Seas. The CDW retains its offshore warm properties as it intrudes over the continental shelves, resulting in elevated bottom temperatures there. This analysis demonstrates the importance of processes in subpolar gyres to erode CDW and to facilitate further transformation on the continental shelves, significantly reducing the heat able to access ice shelf fronts. This sheltering effect is strongest in the western Weddell Sea and tends to diminish toward the east, which helps explain the large zonal differences in continental‐shelf bottom temperatures and the melt rates of Antarctic ice shelves. Plain Language Summary: The continental slope around Antarctica acts as a barrier to deep and warmer offshore waters that can bring heat to the glaciers along the coastline, enhancing their melt rate and contributing to global sea level rise. Around the Antarctic continent these offshore waters, the so‐called Circumpolar Deep Waters, differ in their ability to cross this barrier while retaining their heat, explaining to a large extent why West Antarctic glaciers melt much faster than other Antarctic ice sheets. We study the properties of the warm waters over the continental shelf and offshore regions and contrast them across regions. We show that in East Antarctica, the Ross Sea, and the Weddell Sea, deep warm waters are brought to the surface where they lose heat and mix with surface waters. However, in the Amundsen and Bellingshausen Seas, the warm water is insulated from the surface by land run‐off of fresher and lighter waters that occupy the surface. These results highlight the importance of the subpolar gyres in sheltering Antarctic glaciers. Breaking internal tides contribute substantially to small-scale turbulent mixing in the ocean interior and hence to maintaining the large-scale overturning circulation. How much internal tide energy is available for ocean mixing can be estimated by using semianalytical methods based on linear theory. Until recently, a method resolving the horizontal direction of the internal waves generated by conversion of the barotropic tide was lacking. We here present the first global application of such a method to the first vertical mode of the principal lunar semidiurnal internal tide. We also show that the effect of supercritical slopes on the modally decomposed internal tides is different than previously suggested. To deal with this the continental shelf and the shelf slope are masked in the global computation. The global energy conversion obtained agrees roughly with the previous results by Falahat et al. if the mask is applied to their result, which decreases their energy conversion by half. Thus, around half of the energy conversion obtained by their linear calculations occurs at continental slopes and shelves, where linear theory tends to break down. The barotropic-to-baroclinic energy flux at subcritical slopes away from the continental margins is shown to vary substantially with direction depending on the shape and orientation of topographic obstacles and the direction of the local tidal currents. Taking this additional information into account in tidal mixing parameterizations could have important ramifications for vertical mixing and water mass properties in global numerical simulations. The Newfoundland and Labrador Shelves Bioregion, located on the glaciated continental shelf and adjacent continental slope of eastern Canada, is classified into units that reflect its great physiographic diversity. There are ten shelf units: bedrock zone, fjord systems, major inlet, shelf-crossing troughs, four types of offshore banks, basin, and disturbed (glaciotectonic) terrain. There are three units on the continental slope: channelized areas, trough-mouth areas, and large sedimentary drifts. A series of vignettes illustrates both the distinguishing characteristics of the principal geomorphic units and the morphologic diversity within them. A sediment mobility analysis reveals that wave- and current-generated disturbances are dominant and largely depth-controlled within the shelf units, while the south-flowing Labrador Current impacts sediment transport and mobility along the continental slope. Around most of Antarctica, the Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) shows a warming trend. At the same time, the thermocline is shoaling, thereby increasing the potential for CDW to enter the shallow continental shelves and ultimately increase basal melt in the ice shelf cavities that line the coast. Similar trends, on the order of 0.05 ∘ C and 3 m per decade, have been observed in the Warm Deep Water (WDW), the slightly cooled CDW derivative found at depth in the Weddell Sea. Here, we report on a sudden, local increase in the temperature maximum of the WDW above the continental slope north of the Filchner Trough (74 ∘ S, 25–40 ∘ W), a region identified as a hotspot for both Antarctic Bottom Water formation (AABW) and potential changes in the flow of WDW towards the large Filchner–Ronne Ice Shelf. New conductivity–temperature–depth profiles, obtained in summer 2021, and recent (2017–2021) mooring records show that the temperature of the warm-water core increased by about 0.1 ∘ C over the upper part of the slope (700–2750 m depth) compared with historical (1973–2018) measurements. The temperature increase occurred relatively suddenly in late 2019 and was accompanied by an unprecedented (in observations) freshening of the overlying winter water. The AABW descending down the continental slope from Filchner Trough is sourced by dense ice shelf water and consists to a large degree (60 %) of entrained WDW. The observed temperature increase can hence be expected to imprint directly on deep-water properties, increasing the temperature of newly produced bottom water (by up to 0.06 ∘ C) and reducing its density. Nepheloid layers are widely distributed in the marine environment, and their formation and evolution pose many challenges to the current understanding of ocean dynamics and marine sedimentology. In sediment transport processes, nepheloid layers significantly contribute to the exchange of sediment between the continental shelf and the slope. In this paper, we summarize the global research trends on nepheloid layers. In total, 689 publications from 1990 to 2022 were collected from the Web of Science and analyzed using bibliographic software, including Bibliometrix, VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and CorText. Based on these publications, past and present popular research on nepheloid layers is examined and evaluated. The trends in nepheloid layer research are summarized by analyzing keywords, article references, countries, institutions, and authors. Finally, prospects and several key questions related to nepheloid layers are concluded, which can potentially guide future studies. The bibliographic analysis can provide new insights into the history of nepheloid layers. Fluctuations in prey abundance, composition, and distribution can impact predators, and when predators and fisheries target the same species, predators become essential to ecosystem‐based management. Because of the difficulty in collecting concomitant predator–prey data at appropriate scales in patchy environments, few studies have identified strong linkages between cetaceans and prey, especially across large geographic areas. During summer 2018, a line‐transect survey for cetaceans and coastal pelagic species was conducted over the continental shelf and slope of British Columbia, Canada, and the US West Coast, allowing for a large‐scale investigation of predator–prey spatial relationships. We report on a case study of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) and their primary prey—Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii), northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax), and krill—using generalized additive models to explore the relationships between whale abundance on 10‐km transect segments and prey metrics. Prey metrics included direct measures of biomass densities on segments and an original hotspot metric. For each prey species, segments in the upper fifth percentile for biomass density (across all segments) were designated hotspots, and whale counts on a segment were evaluated for their relationship to number of hotspot segments (species‐specific and multispecies) within 25, 50, or 100 km. Whale abundance was not strongly related to direct measures of biomass densities, whereas models using hotspot metrics were more effective at describing variation in whale abundance, underscoring that evaluating prey at relevant and measurable scales is critical in patchy, dynamic marine environments. Our analysis highlighted differences in the distribution and prey availability for three humpback whale distinct population segments (DPSs) as defined under the US Endangered Species Act, including threatened and endangered DPSs that forage within the California Current Large Marine Ecosystem. These linkages provide insights into which prey species whales may be targeting in different regions and across multiple scales and, consequently, how climatic variability and anthropogenic risks may differentially impact these distinct predator–prey assemblages. By identifying scale‐appropriate prey hotspots that co‐occur with humpback whale aggregations, and with targeted, consistent prey sampling and estimations of potential consumption rates by whales, these findings can help inform the conservation and management of humpback whales within an ecosystem‐based management framework. Continental shelves are key to societal interactions with the oceans, supporting >90% of the world's fisheries through highly productive ecosystems. Previous research has shown that phytoplankton biomass is generally higher on the inner continental shelves, often due to increased nutrient inputs from upwelling or coastal run‐off. However, consistency in observed vertical and horizontal gradients (in abundance, biomass or size) of larger particulates, including zooplankton, on continental shelves has not been established. Using an optical plankton counter and CTD mounted on an undulating towed body, we present high‐resolution vertically resolved profiles of pelagic particle size structure across a continental shelf. Biomass was highest inshore, declining with distance from shore and with depth in the top 100 m of the water column, although the presence of frontal zones can alter this pattern. In the region adjacent to the East Australian Current (EAC), uplift generated by either the EAC interacting with the continental slope or upwelling‐favorable winds, correlated with smaller geometric mean sizes and steeper size spectrum slopes, particularly in the presence of frontal features. South of the EAC separation, the continental shelf water mass was more homogenous but still displayed the same horizontal and vertical patterns in particulate biomass and mean size. By combining our observations in a global comparison, we demonstrate consistent particulate distributions on continental shelves where the inner shelf has higher biomass with a steeper size spectrum slope compared to offshore. The highly productive inner shelf supports zooplankton communities vital to temperate ecosystems and coastal fisheries, through their consistently high biomass. Barotropic and baroclinic tides were simulated for the Coral and Tasman Seas off eastern Australia and compared to a simulation without tides. Both simulations included geostrophic currents and replicated a current analogous to the East Australian Current (EAC). Tides and tidal currents in most of this region are weak, generally 1–2 cm s−1, with the exception of the far northwest portion of the Coral Sea. Even these weak tides were found to impact the mean EAC-like current transport, enhancing it by 1–4 Sv in some areas. Southward flow increased over the continental shelf. Tides did not appear to impact eddy formation, size, or rotational speed; however, they affected eddy propagation. Cyclonic eddies propagated northward faster with tides than without tides. Tides impacted cross-shelf transport of colder water, with significantly more on-shore transport occurring with tides, particularly equatorward of the diurnal critical latitudes. Cross-shelf transport of nutrient rich water onto the shelf is important in this oligotrophic region. Although the prime source of vertical shear and mixing were mean currents and eddies, tides played a secondary role. Tides influenced mixing by increasing vertical temperature diffusivities to 10−4 to 10−3 m2 s−1 over portions of the continental slope and over rough topography, particularly in regions near the diurnal critical latitudes (27°–30°). The extensive coverage of 3-D seismic data on the Santos Basin deep water offered an integrated vision of the local physiography and medium- to small-scale geomorphological features, which enhances the understanding of its constructive/deconstructive natural processes and their interrelations. The Santos Basin is a divergent marginal basin composed of three main physiographic provinces: its continental shelf, continental slope, and the São Paulo Plateau, whose dimensions, orientation, gradients, and relief interact with oceanographic, biological, and geological processes. This study geologically contextualized environmental data related to the Regional Environmental Characterization Project of the Santos Basin (hereinafter referred to as PCR-BS), especially regarding the regional physiographical architecture and deep-water geomorphological provinces as a background for the benthic communities and the distribution of several of its geochemical parameters. The integrated analysis of 3-D seismic and multibeam bathymetric data and its derivatives (gradient and edge maps) -- calibrated by 108 piston cores -- aimed to evaluate its seafloor physiographic features and geological processes. Edge detection seismic attributes enhance gradient contrast, which, in turn, can map innumerous medium- to small- scale geomorphic features (features solved in maps at a 1:1,000,000 scale or larger), such as canyons, channels, ravines, pockmark units, pockmark fields, lineaments, carbonate and coral mounds, salt-related features (crests, minibasins, and crestal grabens), scars and rugous relief associated with mass-transport deposits, and bottom current-related features (depressions and furrows). The slope and the gently dipping plateau (São Paulo Plateau) that follow it eastward show four geomorphological domains based on their direction, profile, average gradient, shelf break isobath, distribution of its medium-small scale geomorphic features, and the presence or absence of evaporites at subsurface. The central-northern São Paulo Plateau contains salt-related topographic elevations (salt diapirs and walls) and depressions (minibasins) that give a rough aspect to the seafloor relief. Simple Summary: The bluntnose sixgill shark, Hexanchus griseus, is a widely distributed species found in all oceans, even if irregularly, inhabiting continental shelves and slopes, islands, and mid-ocean ridges in deep seas. The species is currently classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as globally near-threatened, with a decreasing population. Despite some records in Brazil, the known distribution of this species in the Southwestern Atlantic is very patchy and, in some cases, not yet recorded in the world reference literature, such as in northeastern Brazil. This study, therefore, highlights new records for the species in the Tropical Southwestern Atlantic, particularly off the northeastern Brazilian coast. This information is paramount to establishing distribution maps for the species employed in a population status assessment by the IUCN. The bluntnose sixgill shark, Hexanchus griseus, is a widely distributed demersal species found in tropical and temperate waters of the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans, inhabiting continental shelves and slopes, islands, and mid-ocean ridges at depths ranging from 200 to 1100 m. In the Southwestern Atlantic, this species has been recorded from northeastern to southern Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. Despite this, the known distribution of this species in the Southwestern Atlantic is very patchy and, in some cases, still mostly ignored in the literature, such as in northeastern Brazil. This study, therefore, aimed to report 23 new records of Hexanchus griseus in the Tropical Southwestern Atlantic and highlight the presence of this species off the northeastern Brazilian coast. So far, Hexanchus griseus was officially reported from the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, Saint Peter and Saint Paul Archipelago, and the state of Ceará along the northeast coast of Brazil. Herein, the known distribution is extended to the continental shelf breaks and upper slopes of other Brazilian states, reinforcing the previously reported occurrence of the species near the Saint Peter and Saint Paul Archipelago. Canada ratified the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in 2003. With that ratification is an obligation to submit data and information to the U.N. pertaining to the limits of the country's extended continental shelf (ECS); the portion of the juridical continental shelf that extends beyond 200 nautical miles. A team of Canadian scientists, managers, and legal experts that included representation from three Federal Departments (Natural Resources Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and Global Affairs Canada) with additional support from other departments, spent 13 years compiling and acquiring data to provide the scientific evidence to support delineation of Canada's seaward most maritime limit. The submission has the potential to provide Canada with 2.4 million km2 of additional submarine landmass in the Atlantic and the Arctic oceans over which Canada exercises sovereign rights for the purpose of exploring and exploiting its natural resources. Specific information such as the tectonic framework of the continental margin, the geomorphology of the margin and in particular the continental slope, the geologic nature of adjoined ridges, rises, and plateaux, and sediment thickness within adjacent basins are examples of fundamental pieces of geoscientific information needed to substantiate Canada's outermost maritime limits. This paper highlights a number of segments of Canada's continental margins to showcase this scientific evidence and how it is applied in the UNCLOS context. In doing so, the paper demonstrates the geologic complexity of Canada's margins as illustrated in scientific publications that have resulted from these new data collections, while at the same time presenting new scientific evidence and interpretations. This collection of data and information provides a wealth of new knowledge in Canada's offshore regions. The massive data compilation in the Atlantic led to conception of continental margins, in a source-to-sink scenario, as having an equilibrium base level or graded form, comparable to river systems. Departures from this shape relate to the interplay of sedimentary processes and in particular to those processes that do not fit the source-to-sink paradigm. For example, a significant part of the Atlantic margin is shown to be heavily influenced by along-slope geostrophic currents that generated massive contourite drift deposits. These deposits reflect lateral transport of sediment that had a significant impact on the morphology of the margin. The role of mass transport processes in shaping continental margins is also highlighted, and in particular the collapses of entire segments of the margin were observed. The prominent role mass failure processes play in delivering sediment to the adjacent abyssal plain is also critical in the ECS context. These observations challenge the entrenched notion of a continental margin comprising a shelf, slope, and rise and in particular the concept of the "continental rise". Prior to 2006, regions of the Arctic Ocean seaward of the Canadian landmass had fewer than 5000 km of seismic reflection data. The massive efforts of Arctic coastal States to map their margins for ECS purposes have led to a leap in technological advances to acquire data in ice-covered seas and have led to a wealth of new geoscientific knowledge. Perhaps foremost amongst this knowledge is demonstration that Canada Basin is indeed a fully developed ocean basin, albeit significantly infilled with sediment. Based on this knowledge and identification of related structures, new realistic tectonic scenarios for opening of the Amerasia Basin are proposed that include a significant component of transform or strike-slip motions. With seismic velocity and rock sample information, the continental nature of Alpha and Mendeleev ridges has been substantiated. Even bathymetric data were lacking in the Arctic and new editions of seafloor maps now support grids of 500 m spacing; although some regions remain sparse. Once thought to be relatively stagnant, sedimentary processes such as found in many ocean basins were discovered in the Arctic Ocean. Evidence of geostrophic currents, sediment mass failures, and deep-sea turbidity current channels were found to be ubiquitous, even in the deepest parts of the Arctic's basins. Interest in the study of microplanktonic organisms in the Arctic has increased owing to their direct participation in the process of sedimentation and sensitive response to changes in environmental and climatic factors. This study presents new data on the taxonomic diversity and content of radiolarian skeletons and agglutinated tintinnid ciliate loricae in the Upper Holocene sediments of the Laptev Sea, East Siberian Sea, and the adjacent part of the Arctic Ocean. We traced the spatial distribution of representative microfauna of these groups in surface sediments and sediment cores. Radiolarian skeletons were found in the surface sediments of the continental slope of the Laptev Sea and adjacent parts of the Arctic Ocean. These belong to the following six species: Stylatractus (?) sp., Actinomma leptoderma leptoderma, Actinomma leptoderma longispina, Streblacantha circumtexta, Spongotrochus glacialis, and Cycladophora davisiana. The radiolarian fauna detected was in deep sea and close to the fauna of the Nansen Basin (Central Arctic). Furthermore, we found tintinnid ciliate loricae belonging to the following seven species: Tintinnopsis ventricosoides, Tintinnopsis fimbriata, Tintinnopsis turbo, Tintinnopsis nitida, Tintinnopsis sp. cf. fusus (?), Tintinnopsis sp., and Stenosemella nivalis. In the study area, the tintinnid ciliate loricae of these species were discovered for the first time and traced mainly in the coastal shelf zone, which can be explained by their ecology. The only exception is that of T. nitida, which was found only on the continental slope of the Laptev Sea. Our findings advance knowledge on the biodiversity of Arctic seas and can be used to monitor ecological and paleoceanographic changes in the Arctic region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bathymetric study of northwestern Bay of Bengal has great regional importance due to its influence on waves, tides, storm surges, etc., that affect the population and vegetation of the adjacent coastal parts. In this article, the bathymetry of northwestern part of Bay of Bengal has been mapped extensively using gridded bathymetric data set of GEBCO_2020 (15 arc-second interval data of The General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans). One-dimensional variations of bathymetry along specific latitudes and longitudes adjacent to six popular Indian stations of West Bengal and Odisha have been presented. A number of underwater depressions of the order of 100 km2 each have been identified in the continental shelf between 21.2°N and 21.6°N latitudes, adjacent to Sundarban National Park. Few prominent highs have been marked on the continental slope of Andhra Pradesh coast. One dimensional bathymetry profile of the whole sea bed in north–south direction is presented along 85.83°E and 90.5°E longitudes. A general study of Swatch of No Ground, Bengal Fan, 85°E Ridge and Ninetyeast Ridge is also carried out, and findings are compared with existing literature. The purpose of the study is to model the interaction of shallow-water waves with this part of the seafloor in future. Research highlights: Detailed study of bathymetry of northwestern Bay of Bengal is provided in the article. Recently published gridded 15 arc-second interval bathymetric dataset of GEBCO_2020 is used in this study. Some underwater depressions between 88.5°–89.2°E longitude and 21.2°–21.6°N latitude adjacent to Sundarban National Park and few bathymetric highs along the continental slope of Andhra Pradesh between 83.2°–84.2°E longitude and 17.6°–18°N latitude have been identified from the data. The convergence of different water masses on the shelf and along the shelfbreak, and cross‐isobath shelf‐open ocean exchanges contribute to the complex circulation near Cape Hatteras. We examine the mean and variability of these circulations using data from nine bottom‐mounted acoustic Doppler current profilers, deployed over the mid‐ to outer‐continental shelf north and south of Cape Hatteras as part of the Processes driving Exchange At Cape Hatteras program. The 18‐month‐mean depth‐averaged shelf flows are mostly aligned with isobaths and oriented toward Cape Hatteras. At two sites just north of Cape Hatteras, mean flows have a strong cross‐shelf component. Two dominant spatial patterns in the velocity field are obtained from an empirical orthogonal function analysis. The two leading modes contain 61% of the total variance. The spatial variation of Mode 1 exhibits an along‐shelf flow pattern, while that of Mode 2 shows a convergent flow pattern. The principal component (PC) series of Mode 1 is significantly correlated with the local wind stress, confirming that the along‐shelf flow is wind‐driven as expected. The PC of Mode 2 is highly correlated with the Gulf Stream lateral position as inferred from the current‐ and pressure‐sensor‐equipped inverted echo sounders over the slope south of Cape Hatteras, which indicates that Gulf Stream movement drives time‐varying shelf flow convergence. Conditionally averaged sea‐surface temperature and high‐frequency radar‐measured surface currents based on PC1 and PC2 confirm these relationships and further illustrate how the wind and Gulf Stream forcing work together to influence the flow regime in this region. Plain Language Summary: Several oceanographic processes occur within a small geographic area east of Cape Hatteras. Cool and warm ocean currents meet and collide on the continental shelf, resulting in complex exchange between the shelf and the adjacent open ocean. To better characterize the complicated circulation and understand the processes driving exchanges in this region, we analyze 18‐month current velocity data from an observational array deployed near Cape Hatteras on the shelf and the neighboring continental slope. The time‐mean circulation is characterized as converging flows both on the shelf and along the shelfbreak. We find two dominant spatial patterns in the current velocity: a wind‐driven along‐shelf flow pattern and a Gulf Stream‐driven convergent flow pattern. Additionally, the combined effect of the wind and Gulf Stream forcings mainly drives the shelf and open ocean exchanges. The 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake occurred off southern Sanriku, Japan, on March 11 and generated strong shaking and huge tsunami along the entire eastern coast of Tohoku. The mainshock and numerous large aftershocks caused mass-wasting sedimentation events on the continental shelf, slope, and trench bottom. To investigate the impacts of the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake on the deep-sea bottom-water environment off Sanriku, we conducted shipboard surveys up to ~ 2000 dbar during 2011–2018 and long-term monitoring of the seafloor on the continental slope using a deep-sea station (~ 1000 dbar) off Otsuchi Bay during 2012–2018. The high turbidity (maximum ~ 6%) was observed for the bottom water deeper than 500 dbar on the continental slope of the entire area off Sanriku during 2012–2018. This high turbidity was caused by sporadic sediment resuspension induced by frequent large aftershocks. Furthermore, dissolved oxygen concentrations in the bottom layer from 1000 to 1500 dbar dropped significantly by about 10% after the earthquake, while nutrients and dissolved inorganic carbon showed no significant changes but exhibited wide variations. The high turbidity was associated with the increase in the concentrations of phosphate, dissolved inorganic carbon, and methane, as well as the decrease in those of dissolved oxygen and nitrate. This suggests that remineralization of suspended organic matter resulting from the respiration and denitrification of microbial communities after the earthquake caused the chemical properties of the deep-sea bottom-water. The deep-sea bottom-water environment change was maintained by sporadic sediment resuspension due to continued large aftershocks and was likely caused by variations in dissolved inorganic carbon and phosphate. There are two peaks in the concentration and carbon isotope ratio of methane on the deeper slope from 1000 to 2000 dbar near the hypocenter, which were advected along isopycnal surfaces of 27.38σθ (1000 dbar) and 27.56σθ (1500 dbar). The source of the shallower peak of chemical input is considered to be the sediment resuspension from the shallow sediment on the continental slope induced by the mainshock and large aftershocks.
