BACKGROUND: Exposure to arsenic (As) in well water is a well-documented public health issue for Maine and New Hampshire, as well as for other states in the United States and abroad. Arsenic contamination of well water in these locations is primarily attributed to metasedimentary bedrock that leaches As into groundwater. However, As can also enter groundwater reserves from soils contaminated by the historical use of arsenical pesticides. Approximately half of the households in Maine and New Hampshire rely on private wells, many of which have elevated As. Arsenic exposure has been associated with an increased risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, reduced infection resistance, and lower intelligence quotient in children. Despite these known health impacts, well water testing and treatment are not universal. OBJECTIVES: We have approached the problem of low well water testing rates in Maine and New Hampshire communities by developing the All About Arsenic (AAA) project, which engages secondary school teachers and students as citizen scientists in collecting well water samples for analysis of As and other toxic metals and supports their outreach efforts to their communities. METHODS: We assessed this project’s public health impact by analyzing student data relative to existing well water quality datasets in both states. In addition, we surveyed private well owners who contributed well water samples to the project to determine the actions taken to mitigate As in well water. RESULTS: Students collected 3,070 drinking water samples for metals testing, and 752 exceeded New Hampshire’s As standard of 5 ppb. The AAA data has more than doubled the amount of information available to public health agencies about well water quality in multiple municipalities across both states. Students also collected information about well types and treatment systems. Their data reveal that some homeowners did not know what type of wells they had or whether they had filtration systems. Those with filtration systems were often unaware of the type of system, what the system was filtering for, or whether the system was designed to remove As. Through interviews with pilot survey participants, we learned that some had begun mitigating their exposure to As and other toxic metals in response to test results from the AAA project. DISCUSSION: A school-based approach to collecting and analyzing private well water samples can successfully reach communities with low testing rates for toxic elements, such as As and other metals. Importantly, information generated through the program can impact household decision-making, and students can influence local and state policymaking by sharing information in their communities. SDGSAT-1, the first scientific satellite dedicated to advancing the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, brings renewed vigor and opportunities to water resource monitoring and research. This study evaluates the effectiveness of SDGSAT-1 in extracting water bodies in comparison to Sentinel-2 multi-spectral imager (MSI) data. We applied a confidence thresholding method to delineate river water from land, utilizing the Normalized Differential Water Body Index (NDWI), Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI), and Shaded Water Body Index (SWI). It was found that the SWI works best for SDGSAT-1 while the NDWI works best for Sentinel-2. Specifically, the NDWI demonstrates proficiency in delineating a broader spectrum of water bodies and the MNDWI effectively mitigates the impact of shadows, while SDGSAT-1's SWI extraction of rivers offers high precision, clear outlines, and shadow exclusion. SDGSAT-1's SWI overall outperforms Sentinel-2's NDWI in water extraction accuracy (overall accuracy: 90% vs. 91%, Kappa coefficient: 0.771 vs. 0.416, and F1 value: 0.844 vs. 0.651), likely due to its deep blue bands. The reliability of conventional drought indices is increasingly called into question as the stationarity of hydrologic series undergoes significant alterations and becomes irreversibly impacted by environmental changes. In the extant literature concerning Non‐Stationary Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Indices (NSPEIs), researchers typically construct linear models incorporating location parameters and covariates; however, the simultaneous consideration of both location and scale parameters has been conspicuously infrequent. In this study, we developed a NSPEI using the generalized additive models in location, scale and shape. This index innovatively incorporates location and scale parameters that vary in response to changes in meteorological factors, thereby offering a more reliable and robust means to quantify drought characteristics under changing environmental conditions. The index was employed across representative sub‐watersheds within the western region of Liaoning Province and subjected to a comparative analysis alongside the conventional Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) to ascertain its reliability. The findings indicate that within the study area, both the precipitation and evapotranspiration series exhibit non‐stationary behaviour. Specifically, the precipitation data reveals an overall declining trend, while the evapotranspiration data demonstrates an ascending trend. Furthermore, NSPEI demonstrates superior performance over SPEI in the reconstruction of historical drought events within the western region of Liaoning Province, thereby providing a more accurate representation of the actual drought conditions experienced. The NSPEI estimated a larger drought peak, whereas the SPEI identified longer durations and greater severity of droughts. Studying the pressing impacts of climate change on runoff is vital for the sustainable functioning of society and ecosystems. In Senegal, there is insufficient consideration given to the magnitude of the decrease in water resources caused by climate change and the potential impact of this decrease on both society and the environment. The objective of this study was to evaluate the hydrological effects of climate change in the Aga-Foua-Djilas basin by employing CWatM hydrological models inside the frameworks of ISIMIP and HMF-WA. Over the historical period (1981–2019) in the Aga-Foua-Djilas basin, the analysis of all hydrological parameters indicates positive trends, although not statistically significant (except for runoff). Over the future period, unlike temperatures and PET, which show an upward trend in all scenarios, precipitation and runoff show downward trends, which are more significant under SSP 585. For precipitation, Kendall's Tau shows a downward trend of − 0.157 mm/yr, − 0.321 mm/yr, and − 0.472 mm/yr under SSP 126, SSP 370 and SSP 585, respectively. For runoff, the trends are negative and of the order of − 0.207 m3/s/yr, − 0.44 m3/s/yr, and − 0.565 m3/s/yr, respectively, under SSP 126, SSP 370 and SSP 585 with CwatM and − 0.248 m3/s/yr (SSP 126), − 0.389 m3/s/yr (SSP 245) and − 0.579 m3/s/yr (SSP585) with HMF-WA. Compared with the decrease in precipitation toward the end of the century, the decrease in runoff noted for the distant future (2081–2100) will be of the order of − 32.8% (SSP 126), − 80.8% (SSP 370) and − 94.6% (SSP 585) with CwatM and − 22.3% (SSP 126), − 19.6% (SSP 245) and − 50.9% (SSP 585) with HMF-WA. This study aimed to identify critical risk factors for childhood malnutrition and inform targeted interventions. Childhood malnutrition remains a pressing concern in the coastal regions of Bangladesh. Data were extracted from the latest Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey 2017–2018 and children aged 0–59 months and their mothers aged 15–49 years from 17 coastal districts were included as study population in this study. We performed multivariable logistic regression model to determine the risk factors and a total 2153 children were eligible for the analysis. Stunting, wasting and underweight prevalence was 31.4%, 8.5% and 21.1% respectively. Stunting was more common in children aged 24–35 months with compared to their younger counterparts [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 3.32, 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.35–4.67]. Children to mothers with higher education exhibited 69% (AOR = 0.31, 95% CI: 0.18–0.52) lower risk of stunting compared to those with no education. Similarly, children in poorest and poorer households had 2.2 and 1.83 times higher odds of stunting respectively than those in the richest households. Children born to obese mothers (compared to normal) were 34% less likely to be stunted (AOR = 0.66, 95% CI: 0.51–0.85). Children who had fever and underweight mothers reported wasting. Increasing child age, low maternal education, poorest wealth index, unimproved toilet facilities and childhood morbidity were identified as significant risk factors for underweight. Results support the requirement of effective and appropriate interventions for this particular region considering the identified risk factors to reduce childhood malnutrition in Bangladesh. Assessment of water availability in sub-humid regions is important due to distinct climatic and environmental conditions. In this study, Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) and Hydrologic Engineering Center-Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS) models have been assessed in simulating streamflows in the sub-humid tropical Kabini basin in Kerala, India, spanning 1260 km2. Calibration and validation utilized daily weather data from 1997 to 2015 from the Muthankera gauging station. The study investigated the impact of routing methods on runoff simulation in the ArcSWAT, exploring Muskingum and Variable Storage methods. Evaluation metrics encompassed Nash–Sutcliffe Efïciency (NSE), Coefficient of Determination (R2), Percent bias (PBIAS), RMSE-observations standard deviation ratio (RSR), and Peak Percent Threshold Statistics (PPTS) approach for high-flow values. The result indicates that HEC-HMS outperforms SWAT concerning R2 and NSE values during daily calibration and validation. Monthly simulations showed HEC-HMS closely aligning with SWAT (Variable storage), outperforming SWAT (Muskingum). The PPTS approach proved effective in simulating high-flow values. Both models exhibited proficiency in streamflow analysis within the study area, promising predictive potential for future hydrological studies in sub-humid regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence suggests that domestic water hardness is linked to health outcomes, but its association to all-cause and causespecific cancers warrants investigation. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the association of domestic hard water with all-cause and cause-specific cancers METHODS: In the prospective cohort study, a total of 447,996 participants from UK Biobank who were free of cancer at baseline were included and followed up for 16 y. All-cause and 22 common cause-specific cancer diagnoses were ascertained using hospital inpatient records and self-reported data until 30 November 2022. Domestic water hardness, measured by CaCO3 concentrations, was obtained from the local water supply companies across England, Scotland, and Wales in 2005. Data were analyzed using Cox proportional hazard models, with adjustments for known measured confounders, including demographic, socioeconomic, clinical, biochemical, lifestyle, and environmental factors RESULTS: Over a median follow-up of 13.6 y (range: 12.7–14.4 y), 58,028 all-cause cancer events were documented. A U-shaped relationship between domestic water hardness and all-cause cancers was observed (푝 for nonlinearity <0.001). In comparison with individuals exposed to soft water (0–60 mg/L), the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of all-cause cancer were 1.00 (95% CI: 0.98, 1.02) for those exposed to moderate hard water (>60–120 mg/L), 0.88 (95% CI: 0.84, 0.91) for those exposed to hard water (>120–180 mg/L) and 1.06 (95% CI: 1.04, 1.08) for those exposed to very hard water (>180 mg/L). Additionally, domestic water hardness was associated with 11 of 22 cause-specific cancers, including cancers of the esophagus, stomach, colorectal tract, lung, breast, prostate, and bladder, as well as non-Hodgkin lymphoma, multiple myeloma, malignant melanoma, and hematological malignancies. Moreover, we observed a positive linear relationship between water hardness and bladder cancer DISCUSSION: Our findings suggest that domestic water hardness was associated with all-cause and multiple cause-specific cancers. Findings from the UK Biobank support a potentially beneficial association between hard water and the incidence of all-cause cancer. However, very hard water may increase the risk of all-cause cancer. To investigate the association between mtDNA genetic information and the risk of SF, individuals were conducted in the drinking water endemic fluorosis area in northern China, sequenced the whole genome of mtDNA, identified the SNPs and SNVs, analyzed the haplogroups, and diagnosed SF, and then, the effect of mtDNA genetic information on the risk of SF was evaluated. We find that, D5 haplogroup and its specific SNPs reduced the risk, while the D4 haplogroup and its specific SNPs increased the risk of SF. The number of SNVs in coding regions of mitochondrial respiratory chain (MRC) is different between the controls and cases. This suggests that D5 haplogroup may play a protective role in the risk of SF, while the opposite is observed for the D4 haplogroup, this may relate to their specific SNPs. BACKGROUND: There is a lack of research on the relationship between water fluoridation and pregnancy outcomes. OBJECTIVES: We assessed whether hypothetical interventions to reduce fluoride levels would improve birth outcomes in California. METHODS: We linked California birth records from 2000 to 2018 to annual average fluoride levels by community water system. Fluoride levels were collected from consumer confidence reports using publicly available data and public record requests. We estimated the effects of a hypothetical intervention reducing water fluoride levels to 0.7 ppm (the current level recommended by the US Department of Health and Human Services) and 0.5 ppm (below the current recommendation) on birth weight, birth-weight-for-gestational age 푧-scores, gestational age, preterm birth, small-for-gestational age, large-for-gestational age, and macrosomia using linear regression with natural cubic splines and G-computation. Inference was calculated using a clustered bootstrap with Wald-type confidence intervals. We evaluated race/ethnicity, health insurance type, fetal sex, and arsenic levels as potential effect modifiers. RESULTS: Fluoride levels ranged from 0 to 2.5 ppm, with a median of 0.51 ppm. There was a small negative association on birth weight with the hypothetical intervention to reduce fluoride levels to 0.7 ppm [-2.2 g; 95% confidence interval (CI): -4.4, 0.0] and to 0.5 ppm (-5.8 g; 95% CI: -10.0, -1.6). There were small negative associations with birth-weight-for-gestational-age z-scores for both hypothetical interventions (0.7 ppm: -0.004; 95% CI: -0.007, 0.000 and 0.5 ppm: -0.006; 95% CI: -0.013, 0.000). We also observed small negative associations for risk of large-for-gestational age for both the hypothetical interventions to 0.7 ppm [risk difference (RD)= -0.001; 95% CI: -0.002, 0.000 and 0.5 ppm (-0.001; 95% CI: -0.003, 0.000)]. We did not observe any associations with preterm birth or with being small for gestational age for either hypothetical intervention. Background: Arsenic is a well-known toxin which may contaminate household water. It is harmful when ingested over prolonged periods of time. As a result, public health experts recommend that water should be screened and treated to prevent arsenic ingestion. In the United States, the responsibility of testing and treatment of private wells falls on homeowners. Despite recommendations for routine screening, this is rarely done. Objectives: To assess the prevalence of well water use in a Midwestern patient population, how patients and clinicians perceive the risks of arsenic in well water, and whether additional resources on well water testing are desired. These findings will be used to influence tools for clinicians regarding symptom and examination findings of chronic arsenic exposure and potentiate the distribution of informational resources on well water testing. Methods: Surveys were sent via email to all actively practicing primary care clinicians at the Mayo Clinic in the United States Midwest, and all active adult patients at the Mayo Clinic in the same region. Our team analyzed survey data to determine whether both patients and clinicians are aware of the health effects of chronic arsenic toxicity from well water, the need for routine well water testing and whether each group wants more information on the associated risks. Results: Both patients and primary care clinicians worry about arsenic exposure. Patients with well water are concerned about their water safety yet feel uninformed about testing options. Clinicians do not know how prevalent well water use is among their patients, feel uninformed about the chronic risks of arsenic exposure and the physical examination associated with it. Both groups unanimously want more information on testing options. Conclusions: Our findings show a significant reliance on well water use in the American Midwest, and unanimous support for the need for further well water testing information and resources for patients and their clinicians. This research work was planned to test biosafety of different nanomaterials on the different animals models. These nanoparticles were previously used as potential insecticides of mosquito larvae. The biosafety of these nanoproducts were evaluated on certain organs of non target animals that associated with mosquito breeding sites in Egypt. Animal organs such as the kidneys of rats, toads, and the fish's spleen were used as models to study the biological toxicity of these nanomaterials. After 30 days of the animals receiving the nanomaterials in their water supply, different cell mediated immune cells were assessed in these tissues. Both TNF-α and BAX immuno-expression were also used as immunohistochemical markers. Histopathology was conducted to detect the effect of the tested nanoproducts at the tissue level of the liver and kidneys of both the rats and toads. Green nanoemulsion of the lavender essential oil was relatively more effective, safe, and biodegradable to be used as insecticides against mosquito larvae than the metal-based nanomaterials. BACKGROUND: Diarrheal disease is a leading cause of childhood morbidity and mortality globally. Household water, sanitation, and handwashing (WASH) interventions can reduce exposure to diarrhea-causing pathogens, but meteorological factors may impact their effectiveness. Information about effect heterogeneity under different weather conditions is critical to refining these targeted interventions. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine whether temperature and precipitation modified the effect of low-cost, point-of-use WASH interventions on child diarrhea. METHODS: We analyzed data from a trial in rural Bangladesh that compared child diarrhea prevalence between clusters (푁 = 720) that were randomized to different WASH interventions between 2012 and 2016 (NCT01590095). We matched temperature and precipitation measurements to diarrhea outcomes (푁 = 12,440 measurements, 6,921 children) by geographic coordinates and date. We estimated prevalence ratios (PRs) using generative additive models and targeted maximum likelihood estimation to assess the effectiveness of each WASH intervention under different weather conditions. RESULTS: Generally, WASH interventions most effectively prevented diarrhea during monsoon season, particularly following weeks with heavy rain or high temperatures. The PR for diarrhea in the WASH interventions group compared with the control group was 0.49 (95% CI: 0.35, 0.68) after 1 d of heavy rainfall, with a less-protective effect [PR = 0:87 (95% CI: 0.60, 1.25)] when there were no days with heavy rainfall. Similarly, the PR for diarrhea in the WASH intervention group compared with the control group was 0.60 (95% CI: 0.48, 0.75) following above-median temperatures vs. 0.91 (95% CI: 0.61, 1.35) following below-median temperatures. The influence of precipitation and temperature varied by intervention type; for precipitation, the largest differences in effectiveness were for the sanitation and combined WASH interventions. DISCUSSION: WASH intervention effectiveness was strongly influenced by precipitation and temperature, and nearly all protective effects were observed during the rainy season. Future implementation of these interventions should consider local environmental conditions to maximize effectiveness, including targeted efforts to maintain latrines and promote community adoption ahead of monsoon seasons. Objective: The aim of this study is to use machine learning models to predict drinking water quality from a public health nursing approach. Design: Machine learning study. Sample: "Water Quality Dataset" was used in the study. The dataset contains physical and chemical measurements of water quality for 2400 different water bodies. The process consists of four stages: Data processing with Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique, hyperparameter tuning with 10‐fold cross‐validation, modeling and comparative analysis. 80% of the dataset is allocated as training data and 20% as test data. ML models logistic regression, K‐nearest neighbor, support vector machine, random forest, XGBoost, AdaBoost Classifier, Decision Tree algorithms were used for water quality prediction. Accuracy, precision, recall, F1 score and AUC performance metrics of ML models were compared. To evaluate the performance of the models, 10‐fold cross‐validation was used and a comparative analysis was performed. The p‐values of the models were also compared. Results: N this study, where drinking water quality was predicted with seven different ML algorithms, it can be said that XGBoost and Random Forest are the best classification models in all performance metrics. There is a significant difference in all ML algorithms according to the p‐value. The H0 hypothesis is accepted for these algorithms. According to the H0 hypothesis, there is no difference between actual values and predicted values. Conclusion: In conclusion, the use of ML models in the prediction of drinking water quality can help nurses greatly improve access to clean water, a human right, be more knowledgeable about water quality, and protect the health of individuals. The aim of the study is to evaluate the quality of water collected during wet and dry seasons of Şanlıurfa and to expand and improve understanding of the pollution status and drinking quality of bottled water used for drinking purposes. To do so, an entropy-weighted water quality index (EWQI) and a groundwater pollution index (PIG) were used to evaluate data on physicochemical parameters related to drinking water quality standards. The parameters related to bottled water quality were evaluated with Piper and Ternary diagrams. The calculated EWQI values ranged from 7.78 to 29.74 in wet season whereas 11.63 to 32.20 in dry season. Overall, EWQI data showed that all of water samples were suitable for drinking. Similarly, the values of PIG varied from 0.09 to 0.3 in wet season but 0.1 to 0.26 in dry season, which also showed that all water samples from the study area were suitable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Diarrhea and fever are prevalent childhood illnesses with potentially severe consequences, especially when they co-occur. This study investigates the prevalence and determinants of diarrhea, fever, and their coexistence among children under-five in Bangladesh. Data from the 2017–2018 Bangladesh Demography and Health Survey (BDHS) were analyzed using multivariable stepwise logistic regression with backward selection. This study found that 5.0% for diarrhea, 34.0% for fever, and 3.0% for the coexistence of both illnesses. Common factors associated with childhood diarrhea and fever included the child's age (12–23 months), and the mother's education. Diarrhea was associated with households with improved water sources and children in the Barisal division, while fever was linked to underweight children and those from more affluent backgrounds. The coexistence of both was significantly linked to underweight children, higher birth orders, and children from the Rajshahi division. Notably, child illnesses were associated with parental education, higher socio-economic status, and access to improved drinking water sources. Diarrhea affects one in 20 children, fever affects one in three, and the coexistence of both conditions affects one in 35 children in Bangladesh. General circulation models (GCMs) are developed to simulate the past climate and generate future climate predictions. In the context of global warming, their important roles in identifying possible solutions to water resources planning/management are recognized by the world. However, in actual and regional implementation, due to many factors like initial and boundary conditions, parameters and model structures and so forth, there are great variabilities and uncertainties across the future climate projections of GCMs outputs, which has attracted criticism from water resources planners. Thus, the GCMs usually must be evaluated for assessing their performances in simulating the historical observations. Currently, there are many different conclusions and opinions as to whether the optimal individual model is more advantageous or whether the combined consideration of MME works better. The purpose of this paper is to compare the advantages and disadvantages between the selection of the optimal single GCM and multi‐model ensemble (MME) based on one of the more objective selection methods called TOPSIS. The results show that the performances of GCMs in simulating precipitation and temperature in different climate subregions over China are not identical. For CMIP6 GCMs simulations, the optimal precipitation GCM is CMCC‐CM2‐SR5 for EC, MIROC6 for SC, SWC and NWC, CESM2‐WACCM for NC and NEC, and FGOALS‐g3 for QTP. As for temperature, only NESM3 and BCC‐ESM1 are the optimal GCM for QTP and NWC, respectively; in other subregions, MME is better than single GCM. In general, a simple arithmetic averaging approach employed to generate the MME model is not superior to the optimal GCM, although the error metric with the observed data is reduced, at the cost of a severe compression of the interannual variability. Objective: To undertake an economic evaluation of community water fluoridation (CWF) in remote communities of the Northern Territory (NT). Design: Dental caries experiences were compared between CWF and non‐CWF communities before and after intervention. Costs and benefits of CWF are ascertained from the health sector perspective using water quality, accounting, oral health, dental care and hospitalisation datasets. Setting and Participants: Remote Aboriginal population in the NT between 1 January 2008 and 31 December 2020. Intervention: CWF. Main Outcome Measures: Potential economic benefits were estimated by changes in caries scores valued at the NT average dental service costs. Results: Given the total 20‐year life span of a fluoridation plant ($1.77 million), the net present benefit of introducing CWF in a typical community of 300–499 population was $3.79 million. For each $1 invested in CWF by government, the estimated long‐term economic value of savings to health services ranged from $1.1 (population ≤300) to $16 (population ≥2000) due to reductions in treating dental caries and associated hospitalisations. The payback period ranged from 15 years (population ≤300) to 2.2 years (population ≥2000). Conclusions: The economic benefits of expanding CWF in remote Aboriginal communities of NT outweigh the costs of installation, operation and maintenance of fluoridation plants over the lifespan of CWF infrastructure for population of 300 or more. Residential segregation of settlements on caste lines is common across Indian villages. Banjara settlements or tandas are an extreme form of residential segregation, rooted in colonial history and India's complex caste system, and an outcome of structural discrimination. This analysis examines the structural discrimination of tandas in the distribution of various infrastructure and compares it with the villages in proximity to it. A cross-sectional comparative study of infrastructure was conducted in Banjara tandas and villages in Gadag district, Karnataka, India. Composite scores were computed for various infrastructure and discriminant analysis done to classify tandas and villages. The villages have better physical infrastructure such as paved roads, multiple water supply sources, and better drains and amenities such as the community water filter, ration shop, veterinary center, milk society, banks, post office, and health facilities compared to tandas. Discriminant analysis indicated that social infrastructural indicators of health and education (Discriminant function coefficient −0.8689), followed by transportation (Discriminant function coefficient −0.3576) and water supply (Discriminant function coefficient −0.2939), are the most significant discriminating factors between tanda and villages. This disadvantage indicates structural discrimination that is a continuation of the stigma and labeling perpetrated upon them historically and the complex caste system in Indian societies. The impact of water consumption bolus volume and frequency on hydration biomarkers during work in the heat is unknown. In a randomized, crossover fashion, eight males consumed either 500 mL of water every 40 min or 237 mL of water every 20 min during 2 hr of continuous walking at 6.4 kph, 1.0% grade in a 34 °C/30% relative humidity environment, followed by 2 hr of rest. Hydration biomarkers and variables were assessed pre-work, post-work, and after the 2 hr recovery. There were no differences in body mass between trials at any time point (all p > 0.05). Percent change in plasma volume during work was not different when 237 mL of water was repeatedly consumed (−1.6 ± 8.2%) compared to 500 mL of water (−1.3 ± 3.0%, p = 0.92). Plasma osmolality was maintained over time (p = 0.55) with no difference between treatments (p = 0.21). When consuming 500 mL of water repeatedly, urine osmolality was lower at recovery (205 ± 108 mOsmo/L) compared to pre-work (589 ± 95 mOsmo/L, p < 0.01), different from repeatedly consuming 237 mL of water which maintained urine osmolality from pre-work (548 ± 144 mOsmo/L) through recovery (364 ± 261 mOsmo/L, p = 0.14). Free water clearance at recovery was greater with repeated consumption of 500 mL of water (1.2 ± 1.0 mL/min) compared to 237 mL of water (0.4 ± 0.8 mL/min, p = 0.02). Urine volume was not different between treatments post-work (p = 0.62), but greater after 2 hr of recovery when repeatedly consuming 500 mL of water compared to 237 mL (p = 0.01), leading to greater hydration efficiency upon recovery with repeated consumption of 237 mL of water (68 ± 12%) compared to 500 mL (63 ± 14%, p = 0.01). Thirst and total gastrointestinal symptom scores were not different between treatments at any time point (all p > 0.05). Body temperatures and heart rate were not different between treatments at any time point (all p > 0.05). Drinking larger, less frequent water boluses or drinking smaller, more frequent water boluses are both reasonable strategies to promote adequate hydration and limit changes in body mass in males completing heavy-intensity work in the heat. BACKGROUND: The state of New York expects to receive $115 million in 2022 alone from the U.S. Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to support the replacement of lead water service lines. OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to determine the number and proportion of potential lead water service lines across New York City (NYC) and to evaluate the association between census tract-level racial/ethnic composition, housing vulnerability, and child lead exposure vulnerability with service line type (Potential Lead, Unknown) for 푛=2,083 NYC tracts. METHODS: We conducted a descriptive analysis assessing water service line material recorded in the NYC Department of Environmental Protection’s Lead Service Line Location Coordinates database. We used conditional autoregressive Bayesian Poisson models to assess the relative risk [RR; median posterior estimates, and 95% credible interval (CrI)] of service line type per 20% higher proportion of residents in a given racial/ethnic group and per higher housing vulnerability and child lead exposure vulnerability index scores corresponding to the interquartile range. We also evaluated the associations in flexible natural cubic spline models. RESULTS: Out of 854,672 residential service line records, 136,891 (16.0%) were Potential Lead, and 227,443 (26.6%) were Unknown. In fully adjusted models, higher proportions of Hispanic/Latino residents and higher child lead exposure vulnerability were associated with Potential Lead service lines in flexible spline models and linear models [RR=1.15 (95% CrI: 1.11, 1.21) and RR=1.11 (95% CrI: 1.02, 1.20), respectively]. Associations were modified by borough; Potential Lead service lines were associated with higher proportions of non-Hispanic White and non- Hispanic Asian residents in the Bronx and Manhattan, and with higher proportions of non-Hispanic Black residents in Queens. DISCUSSION: NYC has a high number of Potential Lead and Unknown water service lines. Communities with a high proportion of Hispanic/Latino residents and those with children who are already highly vulnerable to lead exposures from numerous sources are disproportionately impacted by Potential Lead service lines. In the process of rapid advancement of agricultural production, the dynamic evolution characteristics of land and water resources in the main grain-producing areas and the influencing factors are less studied. This study takes Heilongjiang Province, the main grain-producing area in China, as an example, constructs an index system from three functions: production, life, and ecology, uses information entropy to determine the weights and importance of each index, uses the rate of change of the index to determine the basic data of the dynamic development of the system, combines the weights to determine the dynamic evolution characteristics, and compares and analyzes them with the static evolution characteristics determined by the actual data. The results showed that there were differences in the important indicators under different conditions, and the important indicators under static and dynamic conditions were the proportion of the tertiary industry to GDP(A7) and GDP per unit area(A8), with importance weights of 7.45% and 8.0%, respectively. The static evolution index of the land and water resource system increased slowly from 0.16 to 0.91, while the dynamic evolution index fluctuated and declined from 0.58 to 0.34, indicating that the ability of the land and water resource system in the study area to maximize comprehensive benefits is constantly weakening. Managers can pre-control the development speed of the important indicators under dynamic conditions and promote the sustainable development of the land and water resource system. The study covered water resources of two mountain streams in the Polish Carpathians. These were the Biała Woda and Czarna Woda streams, the catchments of which are adjacent to each other. Water flows in both streams were measured during the hydrological years from 2006 to 2020. Next, water outflows from the catchments were calculated. The study aimed to determine differences in the water resources of those catchments in a very small mountainous area. The study showed quantitative similarity in water resources in the entire multi-annual period but at the same time large differences in shorter periods. Instantaneous and daily outflows showed the largest differences, but differences in annual outflows of up to 20% were also recorded. Therefore, hydrological data from operational cross-sections to assess water resources of neighbouring uncontrolled watercourses should cover multi-annual mean values. It was found that during periods of increased runoff (from melting snow or precipitation), the outflow from the Biała Woda catchment was much larger, while during rain-free periods, the outflow from the Czarna Woda catchment prevailed. All shortterm flood like outflows were at least several tens of per cent higher in the Biała Woda catchment. The higher retention capacity of the Czarna Woda catchment can be attributed to the land use (mainly forest areas). Hydrology and land surface and models (HM and LSM) are essential tools for estimating global terrestrial water storage (TWS), an important component of the global water budget for assessing the accessibility and long-term variability of water supplies. With the expansion of open-source and open-data policies, the community can now perform model TWS simulation from source codes as well as directly exploit end-user hydrologic products for water resource applications. Regardless of the model effectiveness and usability, an accuracy assessment is necessary to quantify the model's global and regional strengths, weaknesses, and reliability. This paper compares the most recent global TWS estimates from six models, namely the PCRaster Global Water Balance (PCR-GLOBWB), Noah, Noah-Multiparameterization (Noah-MP), Catchment LSM, and Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC), and Community Atmosphere Biosphere Land Exchange (CABLE)—the latter of which is cross validated for the first time. TWS observations from the Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE) and GRACE Follow-On (GRACE-FO) satellite missions between 2002 and 2021 are used to validate the model. The analyses show that Noah-MP outperforms other models in terms of global average correlations and root mean square errors. PCR-GLOBWB performance is superior in irrigated regions because of the inclusion of human intervention components in the model. CABLE, a core LSM of the Australian climate model, significantly outperforms all others in Australia. CLSM performs reasonably well, but the TWS long-term trend appears to be incorrect due to an overestimated groundwater component. Noah performs similarly (but inferiorly) to Noah-MP, most likely due to model physics sharing. VIC has the least agreement with GRACE and GRACE-FO. The evaluation also sheds some light on the role of forcing data in model performance, particularly for ready-to-use products such as GLDAS, where incorporating MERRA-2 or ERA5 data into GLDAS Noah simulations may potentially improve its TWS accuracy, which has previously been overlooked due to limited modeling capacity. Despite each model's unique strength, the ensemble mean TWS, particularly when Noah-MP and PCR-GLOBWB are included, yields better TWS estimates than an individual model result. The findings of this study could serve as a benchmark for future model development and the data published in this paper could aid in the scientific advancement and discoveries of the hydrology community. A new method is presented to efficiently estimate daily groundwater level time series at unmonitored sites by linking groundwater dynamics to local hydrogeological system controls. The proposed approach is based on the concept of comparative regional analysis, an approach widely used in surface water hydrology, but uncommon in hydrogeology. Using physiographic and climatic site descriptors, the method utilizes regression analysis to estimate cumulative frequency distributions of groundwater levels (groundwater head duration curves, HDC) at unmonitored locations. The HDC is then used to construct a groundwater hydrograph using time series from distance‐weighted neighboring monitored (donor) locations. For estimating times series at unmonitored sites, in essence, spatio‐temporal interpolation, stepwise multiple linear regression (MLR), extreme gradient boosting (XGB), and nearest neighbors are compared. The methods were applied to 10‐year daily groundwater level time series at 157 sites in unconfined alluvial aquifers in Southern Germany. Models of HDCs were physically plausible and showed that physiographic and climatic controls on groundwater level fluctuations are nonlinear and dynamic, varying in significance from "wet" to "dry" aquifer conditions. XGB yielded a significantly higher predictive skill than nearest neighbor and MLR. However, donor site selection is of key importance. The study presents a novel approach for regionalization and infilling of groundwater level time series that also aids conceptual understanding of controls on groundwater dynamics, both central tasks for water resources managers. Objective: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a Gram-negative microaerophilic bacterium that is associated with diseases such as peptic ulcer, chronic gastritis, gastric MALT lymphoma, and gastric cancer. H. pylori infection is more common in developing countries. The high socioeconomic conditions and elimination of bacterial carriage by antimicrobial treatment reduce the prevalence of H. pylori in developed countries. The fecal H. pylori antigen test has been widely used recently. This test with high sensitivity and specificity constitutes a significant diagnostic method alternative due to its cost-effectiveness and rapid results. In this study, we retrospectively analyzed the presence of H. pylori antigen in the stool samples of patients with gastroduodenal complaints from laboratory records. Methods: Test results of patients who underwent H. pylori antigen rapid cassette test from fresh fecal samples between January 2018 and May 2022 in the Medical Microbiology Laboratory were included in the study. Fresh fecal samples from patients were analyzed using H. pylori Antigen Rapid Test Cassette (Acro Biotech Inc, USA) kits. The statistical analysis of the research was made with IBM-SPSS 25.0 (IBM Co., USA). The chi-square test was used to evaluate the research data. P<0.05 value was considered statistically significant. Results: A total of 5,718 patients, 3,285 (57.5%) women with gastroduodenal complaints, were included in the study. Fecal H. pylori antigen test positivity was determined in 1,429 (25%) of these patients. The antigen positivity rate was found to be higher in women (26.6%) compared to men (22.9%) (p<0.05). In addition, this rate was higher in adult patients (27.4%) than in pediatric patients (10.1%). Conclusion: The regional prevalence data are informative about the development levels of countries in socioeconomic issues such as urbanization, infrastructure services, and access to clean water. Droughts are defined by a prolonged absence of moisture. For making drought assessments, a drought index is a crucial tool. This study aims to compare drought characteristics across the Central Main Ethiopian Rift using three drought indices - the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), the Reconnaissance Drought Index (RDI), and the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) - from 1980 to 2017 at six climate sites in spring, summer, and a 6-month period (March - August). With 1% and 5% significance levels, Modified Mann-Kendall and Sen's Slope Estimators were used to determine trend and magnitude, respectively. The temporal fluctuations of the three drought indices revealed that droughts are frequent, unpredictable, and random. Furthermore, they behaved similarly and had significant links. At most places, the drought indices found no significant trends. However, in the spring season, Butajira (by the three indices) and Wulbareg (by the SPI) showed significantly decreasing trends (increasing drought severity), with change rates ranging from -0.03 to -0.04/year. A comparison of drought characteristics revealed that droughts have become more severe and frequent in recent decades, with spring being more common than summer. Purpose: The aim of this research is to analyse the literature on drinking water management in Mexico City and Singapore, considering water supply, institutional organisation and management, and rates so as to propose recommendations for improvement in the water management of the Mexico City. Design/methodology/approach: The preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) methodology is used to review the literature on drinking water management in Mexico City and Singapore in time periods from 1325 to 2021 and from 1819 to 2021, respectively, emphasising the contemporary part. The information search was realised through different prestigious databases and official documents from the governments of Mexico and Singapore, as well as international organisations. After analysing, 40 documents were included to discuss the results. Findings: There is a contrast between water management in Singapore and Mexico City because Singapore has strong institutions coordinated with each other along with the private and social sectors and has efficient fundraising and infrastructure investment systems. Although they are cities that developed in different circumstances, a comparison between them allowed to glimpse some aspects that may be useful to replicate in Mexico City. Originality/value: This research is novel because there is no comparative analysis like the one presented in the literature, so it is suggested to continue delving into the topics covered in future research to have more elements that allow improving drinking water management in Mexico City. Fluoride acts as a key element in dental caries prevention strategy. The consumption of drinking water with adequate fluoride concentration protects the tooth from dental caries. To assess the fluoride level in various drinking water sources available in Coimbatore city. 100 water samples from corporation water, bore-well water and packaged water were randomly collected from five zones of Coimbatore. Fluoride estimation was done by colour comparator technique. The fluoride concentration in bore well water (0.9 ppm) was found to be high when compare to corporation water (0.48 ppm) and bottled water (0.2 ppm). The result obtained from this study stated that the fluoride level was suboptimal in community water and bottled water. Simple Summary: Over 100 million individuals worldwide are exposed to arsenic through drinking water. Arsenic is a cancer-causing chemical. While ultraviolet light exposure and skin sensitivity are known risk factors for skin cancers, especially in Caucasians, arsenic exposure may be a major risk factor for other populations. This is the first study to address the genome-wide gene expression in basal cell carcinoma (BCC) of skin in the context of arsenic exposure. Our study confirms many of the gene pathways involved in BCC; in addition, we found that high arsenic exposure was associated with impaired (a) DNA replication, (b) cellular response to DNA damage repair and (c) immune response that leads to BCC. This study suggests a lower chance of platinum drug resistance in BCC patients with high arsenic exposure compared to the higher chance of platinum drug resistance in patients with low arsenic exposure. These findings may have biological and clinical significance. Exposure to inorganic arsenic (As) is recognized as risk factor for basal cell carcinoma (BCC). We have followed-up 7000 adults for 6 years who were exposed to As and had manifest As skin toxicity. Of them, 1.7% developed BCC (males = 2.2%, females = 1.3%). In this study, we compared transcriptome-wide RNA sequencing data from the very first 26 BCC cases and healthy skin tissue from independent 16 individuals. Genes in " cell carcinoma pathway", "Hedgehog signaling pathway", and "Notch signaling pathway" were overexpressed in BCC, confirming the findings from earlier studies in BCC in other populations known to be exposed to As. However, we found that the overexpression of these known pathways was less pronounced in patients with high As exposure (urinary As creatinine ratio (UACR) > 192 µg/gm creatinine) than patients with low UACR. We also found that high UACR was associated with impaired DNA replication pathway, cellular response to different DNA damage repair mechanisms, and immune response. Transcriptomic data were not strongly suggestive of great potential for immune checkpoint inhibitors; however, it suggested lower chance of platinum drug resistance in BCC patients with high UACR compared high platinum drug resistance potential in patients with lower UACR. The Qanat (also known as kariz) is one of the significant water resources in many arid and semiarid regions. The present research aims to use machine learning techniques for Qanat discharge (QD) prediction and find a practical model that predicts QD well. Gene expression programming (GEP), artificial neural network (ANN), group method of data handling (GMDH), least-square support vector machine (LSSVM) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), are employed to predict one-, two-, and five-months time-step ahead QD in an unconfined aquifer. QD for one, two, and three lag-times (QDt−1, QDt−2, QDt−3), QD for adjacent Qanat, the main meteorological components (Tt, ETt, Pt) and GWL for one, two, and three lag-times are utilized as input dataset to accomplish accurate QD prediction. The GMDH model, according to its best results, had promising accuracy in predicting multi-step ahead monthly QD, followed by the LSSVM, ANFIS, ANN and GEP, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To evaluate caries among nursery-school children.Materials and Methods: Clinical examination was carried out in 1123 children (568 girls and 555 boys), aged 6-47 months, who attended 33 nursery schools located in a large city (Poznan, Poland). The research was done by experienced dentists in accordance with the criteria set by the World Health Organization for epidemiological studies. The obtained data determined the frequency of caries and the number and surfaces of teeth with carious lesions. In Poznan, drinking water is not artificially fluoridated.Results: The prevalence of caries in the general population was 7.21%. The mean number of teeth affected by caries in the whole population was 0.26 (0.24 for girls and 0.28 for boys), whereas the mean number of tooth surfaces affected by caries was 0.37 (0.32 and 0.41, respectively). In the maxilla, most of the carious lesions were located in the incisors; in contrast, in the mandible, they were in the molars. Only 3 of the examined children had prior fillings.Conclusions: Currently, preventive and curative dental care for nursery-school-age children is unsatisfactory. The water environment is one of the basic elements that constitute the environment. It is an important place for the survival and development of human society, and it is also the most seriously disturbed and damaged area by humans. The pollution and destruction of water environment has become one of the major environmental problems in the world today. The essence of urban water space landscape design under the concept of integrating people's ecological design is the ecological landscape design of urban water spaces, while the development of ecological landscape design in the field of urban water space landscape design is still in its infancy, and the interpretation of its concept is also different. The ecological design of the landscape reflects a new dream of human beings, a new aesthetics and value: the true cooperative and fraternal relationship between man and nature. At present, the ecological design of urban water space landscape has not put forward a more accurate concept, clear principles and standards, and a complete and systematic theoretical basis, which requires further research, discussion, and continuous practice by this generation of designers to improve it. To this end, this paper proposed a research method on the integration of water environment governance in urban and rural spaces with natural ecological landscape design. This paper mainly talked about the status quo of water environment and its network sensor algorithm research and analyzed its coverage area one by one. Then, the water quality extraction is introduced in detail. And finally, the data analysis of the Beijing river waters, the analyzer rainfall, water quality, and so on are carried out in the experimental part. It could be seen from the experimental results that there were currently 22 reclaimed water plants in six urban areas of Beijing, with a daily water treatment capacity of 4.08 million cubic meters and a sewage treatment rate of 98%. As of 2016, 440 million cubic meters of reclaimed water has been reused. Background: Estimates of the effectiveness of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions that provide high levels of service on childhood diarrhoea are scarce. We aimed to provide up-to-date estimates on the burden of disease attributable to WASH and on the effects of different types of WASH interventions on childhood diarrhoea in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs).Methods: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we updated previous reviews following their search strategy by searching MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and BIOSIS Citation Index for studies of basic WASH interventions and of WASH interventions providing a high level of service, published between Jan 1, 2016, and May 25, 2021. We included randomised and non-randomised controlled trials conducted at household or community level that matched exposure categories of the so-called service ladder approach of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) for WASH. Two reviewers independently extracted study-level data and assessed risk of bias using a modified Newcastle-Ottawa Scale and certainty of evidence using a modified Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation approach. We analysed extracted relative risks (RRs) and 95% CIs using random-effects meta-analyses and meta-regression models. This study is registered with PROSPERO, CRD42016043164.Findings: 19 837 records were identified from the search, of which 124 studies were included, providing 83 water (62 616 children), 20 sanitation (40 799 children), and 41 hygiene (98 416 children) comparisons. Compared with untreated water from an unimproved source, risk of diarrhoea was reduced by up to 50% with water treated at point of use (POU): filtration (n=23 studies; RR 0·50 [95% CI 0·41-0·60]), solar treatment (n=13; 0·63 [0·50-0·80]), and chlorination (n=25; 0·66 [0·56-0·77]). Compared with an unimproved source, provision of an improved drinking water supply on premises with higher water quality reduced diarrhoea risk by 52% (n=2; 0·48 [0·26-0·87]). Overall, sanitation interventions reduced diarrhoea risk by 24% (0·76 [0·61-0·94]). Compared with unimproved sanitation, providing sewer connection reduced diarrhoea risk by 47% (n=5; 0·53 [0·30-0·93]). Promotion of handwashing with soap reduced diarrhoea risk by 30% (0·70 [0·64-0·76]).Interpretation: WASH interventions reduced risk of diarrhoea in children in LMICs. Interventions supplying either water filtered at POU, higher water quality from an improved source on premises, or basic sanitation services with sewer connection were associated with increased reductions. Our results support higher service levels called for under SDG 6. Accurate estimation of reference evapotranspiration (ETo) plays a vital role in irrigation and water resource planning. The Penman–Monteith method recommended by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO PM56) is widely used and considered a standard to calculate ETo. However, FAO PM56 cannot be used with limited meteorological variables, so it is compulsory to choose an alternative model for ETo estimation, which requires fewer variables. This study built ten machine learning (ML) models based on multi-function, neural network, and tree-based structure against the FAO PM56 method. For this purpose, time series temperature data on a monthly scale are only used to train ML models. The developed ML models were applied to estimate ETo at different test stations and the obtained results were compared with the FAO PM56 method to verify and validate their performance in ETo estimation for the selected stations. In addition, multiple statistical indicators, including root-mean-square error (RMSE), coefficient of determination (R2), mean absolute error (MAE), Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), and correlation coefficient (r) were calculated to compare the performance of each ML model on ETo estimation. Among the applied ML models, the ETo tree boost (TB) ML model outperformed the other ML models in estimating ETo in diverse climatic conditions based on statistical indicators (R2, NSE, r, RMSE, and MAE). Moreover, the observed R2, NSE, and r were the highest for the TB ML model, while RMSE and MAE were found to be the lowest at the study sites compared to other applied ML models. Lastly, ETo point data yielded from the TB ML model was used in an interpolation process to create monthly and annual ETo maps. By exploring management in a study of different municipal departments, this paper contributes to a theoretical and empirical understanding of how the type of work shapes and reproduces management practices and inequality in working conditions within a horizontally segregated public sector. A structural theoretical model guides the design of the empirical qualitative study within education, elderly care and water supply in several Swedish municipalities. The comparative analysis shows that, while managers within water supply take control over management and are allowed to do so, managers in education and care are instructed to take personal responsibility when handling goal conflicts and lack of resources. Gendered norms and values inscribed in the type of work seem to be fundamentally integral to management practices, which affect the local manager's authority and actions. Background: Since Ethiopia has been implemented the Community-Led Total Sanitation and Hygiene (CLTSH) approach to control incidence of diarrhea, few studies have compared the prevalence of diarrhea and associated factors in rural areas that have implemented this approach with those that have not implemented it, and none have examined it in the district of Menz Gera Midir in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. This study addressed this gap.Method: A community-based comparative cross-sectional study was conducted among 224 children under five in three randomly selected rural kebeles (the smallest administrative units in Ethiopia) where CLTSH had been implemented and 448 similar children in three other randomly selected rural kebeles where CLTSH had not been implemented during February and March, 2020. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and an on-the-spot observational checklist. Data were analyzed using three different binary logistic regression models with 95% confidence interval (CI): the first model (Model I) was used for CLTSH-implementing kebeles, the second model (Model II) for non-CLTSH-implementing kebeles, and the third model (Model III) for pooled analysis of CLTSH-implementing and non-implementing kebeles. To control confounders, each multivariable logistic regression model was built by retained variables with p < 0.25 from the bi-variable logistic regression analysis. From the adjusted multivariable analysis of each model, variables with p-values < 0.05 were declared factors significantly associated with acute diarrhea.Results: The prevalence of acute diarrhea among children under five from households in kebeles that had implemented CLTSH was 10.6% (95% CI:6.6-14.7%) and among those that had not implemented CLTSH 18.3% (95%CI:14.8-22.2%). In CLTSH-implementing areas, use of only water to wash hands (AOR: 3.28; 95% CI:1.13-9.58) and having a mother/caregiver who did not wash their hands at critical times (AOR: 3.02; 95% CI:1.12-8.12) were factors significantly associated with acute diarrhea. In non-CLTSH-implementing areas, unimproved water source (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 2.81; 95% CI:1.65-4.78), unsafe disposal of child feces (AOR: 2.10; 95% CI:1.13-3.89), improper solid waste disposal (AOR: 1.95; 95% CI:1.12-3.38), and untreated drinking water (AOR: 2.33; 95% CI:1.21-4.49) were factors significantly associated with acute diarrhea. From the pooled analysis, not washing hands at critical times (AOR: 2.54; 95% CI:1.59-4.06), unsafe disposal of child feces (AOR: 2.20; 95% CI:1.34-3.60) and unimproved water source (AOR: 2.56; 95% CI:1.62-4.05) were factors significantly associated with the occurrence of acute diarrhea while implementation of CLTSH was a preventive factor (AOR: 0.24; 95%: 0.20-0.60) for the occurrence of acute diarrhea.Conclusion: The prevalence of acute diarrhea among under-five children in Menz Gera Midir District was lower in kebeles where CLTSH had been implemented than in kebeles where CLTSH had not been implemented. Therefore, we recommend that governmental and non-governmental sectors increase implementation of CLTSH programs, including improving handwashing at critical times, promoting safe disposal of child feces and enhancing the availability of improved water sources. Background: Iodine status surveys of women in Somaliland present widely conflicting results. Previous research indicates elevated concentrations of iodine (IQR 18-72 μg/L) in groundwater used for drinking and cooking, but the relation with iodine intake is not well characterized.Objectives: We aimed to investigate the contributions of household water iodine concentration (WIC), breastfeeding, total fluid intake, hydration levels, and urine volume on urinary iodine concentration (UIC) and excretion (UIE) over a 24-h period and to define iodine status from iodine intake estimates and median UIC, normalized to a mean urine volume of 1.38 L/d (hydration adjusted).Methods: The study sample comprised 118 nonpregnant, healthy women aged 15-69 y. All participants resided in Hargeisa, and 27 were breastfeeding. Data collection consisted of a 24-h urine collection, a 24-h fluid intake diary, a beverage frequency questionnaire, and a structured recall interview. We measured UIC and WIC in all urine and in 49 household water samples using the Sandell-Kolthoff reaction.Results: WIC ranged between 3 and 188 μg/L, with significant median differences across the water sources and city districts (P < 0.003). Nonbreastfeeding women were borderline iodine sufficient [hydration-adjusted median urinary iodine concentration (mUIC) 109 μg/L; 95% CI: 97, 121 μg/L], whereas breastfeeding women showed a mild iodine deficiency (73 μg/L; 95% CI: 54, 90 μg/L). There were strong correlations (ρ: 0.50-0.69, P = 0.001) between WIC and UIC, with iodine from household water contributing more than one-half of the total iodine intake. Multivariate regression showed hydration and breastfeeding status to be the main predictors of UIC.Conclusions: Iodine from household water is the main contributor to total iodine intake among women in Hargeisa, Somaliland. Variation in female hydration and spatial and temporal WIC may explain diverging mUIC between studies. Objective: The study aimed to assess the association between lithium levels in drinking water from public supplies and suicide rates in different municipalities of Lithuania in relation with incidence of affective disorders.Methods: 53 drinking water samples were analysed from the main public drinking water systems of the country's municipalities. Lithium levels were determined using the ion chromatography method. Information on all registered affective disorders across all age groups and gender within the 5-year period was obtained from the Department of Statistics, and was averaged across the investigation time period. For the statistical analysis, lithium levels were averaged per municipality and plotted against suicide standardized mortality rates per 100,000 populations, within the 5-year period.Results: We found that lithium levels in drinking water are positively associated with the incidence of affective disorders. Our findings suggest higher incidence rates of affective disorders in the municipalities with a lithium level in drinking water above median compared to those in the municipalities with a lithium level below median and with the same socio-demographic and psychiatric characteristics. Suicide mortality rates are inversely associated with lithium levels in drinking water only in municipalities with higher lithium levels (above median) and with a high rate of affective disorders.Conclusion: Based on our study results and insights we generate the following hypothesis for the further research, that lithium level in drinking water might have an important protective effect against suicide rates in the population with affective disorders. Shortage of water drives efforts to increase water use efficiency in agriculture. However, identification of hot-spots of water use inefficiency in agriculture is hindered by difficulty of monitoring the large number of factors that influence water use for irrigation. The goal of this study was to assess interrelations between crop type and topo-climate on water use, water use efficiency, and economic productivity, on a country and regional scales. We hypothesized that water use efficiency of plantation crops across topo-climatic regions do not match crop prevalence in each region. High-resolution datasets related to crop distribution, regional irrigation recommendation, and local multiyear reference evapotranspiration were integrated for the analysis of water demand (m3/ha), blue water footprint (m3/ton) and economic land (USD/ha) and water (USD/m3) productivity, across geographical regions throughout Israel. The results demonstrate a large variability in all indices across crops and regions, reflecting variability in water demand for individual crops, due to effects of topo-climatic conditions on reference evapotranspiration. Water footprint and water demand ranged ~ 90- 3,740 m3/ton and ~ 3,800- 23,500 m3/ha respectively, between crops. Large differences were identified between the highest and lowest water footprint amongst cultivation regions for some crops, such as avocado and almond, with a considerable portion of the cultivation area located in regions with the highest water footprint. This highlights the need to direct cultivation of crops to regions with relative low water footprint, to help reduce water use and increase water use efficiency. The results shown are a product of an interactive translational platform that facilitates access to an integrated high-resolution agricultural dataset via a user-friendly interactive Agri-Atlas, providing a comparative analysis of the agricultural and water footprints of different regions and crops in Israel. While the translational platform currently uses local data for Israel, it can be adapted for any country or region where agricultural data is collected, to support data-based studies and policies to help increase agricultural water use efficiency, in face of the growing demand for food and diminishing water supplies. Background: In the densely populated slums of Kolkata, informal healthcare providers' (IHP) diarrhea-related knowledge and rationality of practices should be improved to reduce risk of adverse outcome, expenditure, and antimicrobial resistance.Methods: A multicomponent intervention was conducted among 140 representative IHPs in the slums of 8 wards in Kolkata to assess its impact on their diarrhea-related knowledge and practice. Six intervention modules in local languages were provided (1 per month) with baseline (N = 140) and postintervention (N = 124) evaluation.Results: Mean overall (61.1 to 69.3; P < .0001) and domain-specific knowledge scores for etiology/spread (5.4 to 8.1; P < .0001), management (6.4 to 7.2; P < .0001), and oral rehydration solution ([ORS] 5.7 to 6.5; P < .0001) increased significantly (at α = 0.05) after intervention and were well retained. Impact on knowledge regarding etiology/spread (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 5.6; P < .0001), cholera (aOR = 2.0; P = .0041), management (aOR = 3.1; P < .0001), ORS (aOR = 2.3; P = .0008), and overall (aOR = 4.3; P < .0001) were significant. Intervention worked better for IHPs who practiced for ≥10 years (aOR = 3.2; P < .0001), untrained IHPs (aOR = 4.8; P < .0001), and pharmacists (aOR = 8.3; P < .0001). Irrational practices like empirical antibiotic use for every cholera case (aOR = 0.3; P < .0001) and investigation for every diarrhea case (aOR = 0.4; P = .0003) were reduced. Rationality of testing (aOR = 4.2; P < .0001) and antibiotic use (aOR = 1.8; P = .0487) improved.Conclusions: Multicomponent educational intervention resulted in sustainable improvement in diarrhea-related knowledge and practices among IHPs in slums of Kolkata. Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common heart rhythm disorder and a risk factor of adverse cardiovascular diseases. Established causes do not fully explain the risk of AF and unexplained risk factors might be related to the environment, e.g. magnesium in drinking water. Low magnesium levels in drinking water might be associated with higher risk of cardiovascular diseases including AF. With detailed individual data from nationwide registries and long-term magnesium exposure time series, we had a unique opportunity to investigate the association between magnesium in drinking water and AF.Objective: We evaluated the association between magnesium concentration in drinking water and AF risk.Methods: A nationwide register-based cohort study (2002-2015) was used including individuals aged ≥30 years. Addresses were linked with water supply areas (n = 2418) to obtain time-varying drinking water magnesium exposure at each address. Five exposure groups were defined based on a 5-year rolling time-weighted average magnesium concentration. AF incidence rate ratios (IRRs) between exposure groups were calculated using a Poisson regression of incidence rates, adjusted for sex, age, and socioeconomic position. Robustness of results was investigated with different exposure definitions.Results: The study included 4,264,809 individuals (44,731,694 person-years) whereof 222,998 experienced an incident AF. Magnesium exposure ranged from 0.5 to 62.0 mg/L (mean = 13.9 mg/L). Estimated IRR (95% CI) compared to the referent exposure group (< 5 mg/L) was 0.98 (0.97-1.00) for the second lowest exposure group (5-10 mg/L), and 1.07 (1.05-1.08) for the two highest exposure groups (15-62 mg/L). Strongest positive associations were observed among those aged ≥80 years and with lowest education group. An inverse association was found among individuals with highest education group.Conclusion: There might be a small beneficial effect on AF of an increase in magnesium level in drinking water up to 10 mg/L, though an overall positive association was observed. The unexpected positive association and different associations observed for subgroups suggest a potential influence of unaccounted factors, particularly in vulnerable populations. Future research on magnesium in drinking water and cardiovascular diseases needs to focus on contextual risk factors, especially those potentially correlating with magnesium in drinking water. Groundwater is one of the precious water sources for domestic, irrigation, and industrial demands in arid and semiarid regions of the world. The same is true in Ethiopia context. In this study, seven groundwater samples were collected and analyzed for various chemical constituents (pH, TDS, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, SO42-, Cl-, HCO3-, and NO3-) to assess the hydrogeochemical characteristics and water types of the groundwater wells. Among the seven sampled groundwater wells, five wells are found and used for domestic water supply in Arba Minch University (AMU) main campus. The remaining two are used for industrial and irrigation demands located at the compound of Textile Factory and Haile Resort, respectively. Results showed that the main campus groundwater wells are saline and harder than the two wells from Textile Factory and Haile Resort. Moreover, elevated concentration of nitrate and potassium (greater than the maximum permissible level allowed in Ethiopia) were obtained in the groundwater sources used mainly in the AMU main campus wells. These elevated concentrations of potassium and nitrate beyond the enriched salt contents in the AMU main campus wells could pose kidney, cardiovascular, and other related health problems. Model parameter values for ungauged catchments can be regionalized from hydrologically similar gauged catchments. Achieving reliable and robust predictions in ungauged catchments by regionalization, however, is still a major challenge. Here, we conduct a comparative assessment of 19 regionalization approaches based on previously published literature to contribute new insights into their performance in different geographic regions. The approaches use geographical information, physical catchment attributes, hydrological signatures, or a combination thereof to select donor catchments and to subsequently transfer their entire parameter sets to the ungauged receiver catchment. Each regionalization approach was tested in a leave‐one‐out cross‐validation with a bucket‐type catchment model (the HBV model) using 671 gauged catchments in the United States with a diverse hydroclimatology. We then evaluated regionalization performance for several hydrograph aspects, compared it against calibration and regionalization benchmarks, and linked it to catchment descriptors. The results of this large‐sample regionalization study can be summarized in three major lessons: (a) Catchments can benefit from a well‐chosen regionalization approach independent of their geographic region and independent of how well they can be modeled or regionalized at best. (b) Almost perfect donors exist for most catchments and an excellent relative model performance can be reached for most catchments with current regionalization approaches. This implies that there is considerable potential for improvement in the prediction in ungauged catchments. (c) The ranking of regionalization approaches depends on how the predicted hydrographs are evaluated. These findings indicate that a multi‐criteria evaluation is essential for a robust assessment of regionalization performance. However, for many catchments there is a lack of streamflow information. In such situations, streamflow is often estimated using hydrological models, whereby model parameterizations are transferred (i.e., regionalized) from hydrologically similar gauged catchments. Reliable estimates in data‐scarce regions are still a major challenge in hydrology despite the large number of regionalization approaches proposed in the past decades. Here, we conduct a systematic and standardized assessment of 19 existing regionalization approaches using 671 catchments in the United States. Our findings suggest that widely used regionalization approaches can result in excellent model performance for most catchments, whereby approaches considering spatial proximity and any kind of volume information are among the most promising ones. While volume information is per definition missing in ungauged catchments, it could possibly be derived from a small number of field measurements or estimated through statistical analysis. However, the most suitable approach can vary considerably among catchments, and an improved understanding of the characteristics and parameter values of great donors and their relationship to an ungauged catchment will be key to advance regionalization further. Purpose: Adverse effects of iron fortification/supplements such as Micronutrient Powder (MNP) on gut microbiota have previously been found in infection-prone African settings. This study examined the adversaries of a low-iron MNP compared with the standard MNP on the composition of gut microbiota in Bangladeshi children exposed to a high concentration of iron from potable groundwater. Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted in 2- to 5-year-old children, drinking groundwater with a high concentration of iron (≥ 2 mg/L). Children were randomized to receive one sachet per day of either standard MNP (12.5 mg iron) or low-iron MNP (5 mg iron), for 2 months. A sub-sample of 53 children was considered for paired assessment of the gut microbiome by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Results: At baseline, the gut microbiota consisted of Bifidobacteriaceae (15.6%), Prevotellaceae (12.2%), Lactobacillaceae (3.6%), Clostridiaceae (4.1%) and Enterobacteriaceae (2.8%). Overall, there was no significant treatment effect of the low-iron MNP compared to the standard MNP. However, an apparent treatment effect was observed in children with a relative adult-like microbiota, with a higher relative abundance of potentially pathogenic Enterobacteriaceae after receiving the standard MNP compared to the low-iron MNP. This effect, however, was statistically non-significant (p = 0.07). Conclusion: In Bangladeshi children drinking iron-rich groundwater, a low-iron MNP supplementation did not have a significant impact on their gut microbiota profile/composition compared to the standard MNP. Heat extremes (ie, heatwaves) already have a serious impact on human health, with ageing, poverty, and chronic illnesses as aggravating factors. As the global community seeks to contend with even hotter weather in the future as a consequence of global climate change, there is a pressing need to better understand the most effective prevention and response measures that can be implemented, particularly in low-resource settings. In this Series paper, we describe how a future reliance on air conditioning is unsustainable and further marginalises the communities most vulnerable to the heat. We then show that a more holistic understanding of the thermal environment at the landscape and urban, building, and individual scales supports the identification of numerous sustainable opportunities to keep people cooler. We summarise the benefits (eg, effectiveness) and limitations of each identified cooling strategy, and recommend optimal interventions for settings such as aged care homes, slums, workplaces, mass gatherings, refugee camps, and playing sport. The integration of this information into well communicated heat action plans with robust surveillance and monitoring is essential for reducing the adverse health consequences of current and future extreme heat. Objective  The lead-in-water impact of the Flint water crisis on the youngest and most neurodevelopmentally vulnerable population was largely unknown. The objective of this study was to investigate and compare cord blood lead levels (CBLLs) in newborns in Flint, Michigan, after the Flint water crisis, to a group of Detroit newborns. Study Design  Mothers of 99 Flint newborns were surveyed about potential lead exposures. These neonates were born after the recognition of population-wide lead-in-water contamination. CBLLs were measured and maternal–fetal metrics were reviewed. CBLLs and maternal–fetal metrics were then compared with those of a retrospective cohort of 116 Detroit newborns who previously shared the same water source. Analysis involved descriptive statistics, independent t -test, and χ 2 analysis. Results  CBLLs greater than or equal to 1 μg/dL (0.05 μmol/L) were more prevalent among Flint newborns (14%), as compared with Detroit newborns (2%; p  = 0.001). This was a sevenfold disparity between Flint and Detroit newborns. No statistically significant differences were found in birth weight, head circumference, small for gestational age status, gestational age, or preterm status among the two groups. Conclusion  The Flint water crisis potentially exposed newborns to lead in utero, implicating maternal–fetal outcomes and future health and development. Primary prevention efforts, including identification and mitigation of lead exposure before conception and during pregnancy, are needed. Malnutrition is the leading cause of poor child health in Ethiopia, and progress to avert it is unacceptably slow. In addition, little is known about the magnitude and factors associated with concurrent wasting and stunting (WaSt). Therefore, this study aimed to assess the prevalence and factors associated with WaSt, wasting, stunting and underweight among children 6–59 months in Kersa Health and Demographic Surveillance System, Ethiopia. Data from a total of 1091 children and their parents' were analysed from a cross‐sectional study. Household questionnaires and anthropometric measurements were used for data collection. Height‐for‐age, weight‐for‐height and weight‐for‐age indices are expressed as standard deviation units from the mean for the reference group. Multivariate analyses were conducted to identify factors associated with WaSt, wasting, stunting and underweight. Statistical significance was declared at p < 0.05. The prevalence of indicators of malnutrition was WaSt (5.8%), wasting (16.8%), stunting (53.9%) and underweight (36.9%). Children aged 6–17 months had a higher odds of wasting (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.8, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.12–2.75) compared with those aged 36–59 months, whereas children aged 18–35 months (aOR 2.4, 95% CI 1.65–3.47) and 36–59 months (aOR 1.6, 95% CI 1.07–2.37) had higher odds of stunting compared with those aged 6–17 months. Similarly, children aged 18–35 months (aOR 1.6, 95% CI 1.07–2.37) and 36–59 months (aOR 2.2, 95% CI 1.52–3.10) had higher odds of underweight compared with children aged 6–17 months. Households that did not treat drinking water at point of use were at higher odds of WaSt (aOR 3.3, 95% CI 1.16–9.27) and stunting (aOR 1.9, 95% CI 1.31–2.85) compared with those who did treat drinking water. Boys were more likely to be WaSt, wasted, stunted and underweight. Cough was associated with WaSt, wasting and underweight. Furthermore, maternal education, maternal occupation and maternal age were significantly associated with wasting. Maternal body mass index (BMI) of less than 18.5 kg/m2 and maternal BMI between 18.5 and 25 kg/m2 were associated with child stunting. In Kersa, the prevalence of WaSt, wasting, stunting and underweight is very high and requires urgent public health intervention. This study highlights point‐of‐use water treatment, maternal education, hygiene and sanitation, child health service utilization and maternal BMI as important areas to improve to target child malnutrition.
