As major terrestrial carbon sinks, forests play an important role in mitigating climate change. The relationship between the seasonal uptake of carbon and its allocation to woody biomass remains poorly understood, leaving a significant gap in our capacity to predict carbon sequestration by forests. Here, we compare the intra-annual dynamics of carbon fluxes and wood formation across the Northern hemisphere, from carbon assimilation and the formation of non-structural carbon compounds to their incorporation in woody tissues. We show temporally coupled seasonal peaks of carbon assimilation (GPP) and wood cell differentiation, while the two processes are substantially decoupled during off-peak periods. Peaks of cambial activity occur substantially earlier compared to GPP, suggesting the buffer role of non-structural carbohydrates between the processes of carbon assimilation and allocation to wood. Our findings suggest that high-resolution seasonal data of ecosystem carbon fluxes, wood formation and the associated physiological processes may reduce uncertainties in carbon source-sink relationships at different spatial scales, from stand to ecosystem levels., (© 2024. To understand the impact of climate change on the tree radial growth in Southeast China's subtropical evergreen broadleaved forest, comparative research on the radial growth–climate associations of Schima superba was conducted. This dominant evergreen broadleaved tree species was examined at both its southern and northern distribution margins through dendroclimatology. The results showed that the radial growth of S. superba stands at a high elevation in the southern margin and stands in the northern margin were positively correlated with springtime temperatures, mostly in April (e.g., mean temperature: r = 0.630, p < 0.05) and May (e.g., maximum temperature: r = 0.335, p < 0.05), respectively. Meanwhile, the temperature in the late rainy season had a significant negative effect on the radial growth of S. superba stands in the southern margin, including high-elevation stands (e.g., the mean temperature in previous and current September: r = −0.437 and −0.383, p < 0.05) and low-elevation stands (e.g., the mean temperature in previous August and October: r = −0.577 and −0.348, p < 0.05). It was shown that temperature was the key climatic factor affecting the radial growth of S. superba, and the response of radial growth to temperature had obvious spatial differences. The findings indicate that the radial growth of S. superba stands in warm growth environments will be negatively impacted by future climate warming. On the contrary, the radial growth of S. superba stands growing in relatively cold growth environments may benefit from warmer spring. The establishment of mixed-species forests with complex structures and high biodiversity has emerged as a key approach for enhancing productivity and maintaining the stability of plantation forests. However, how the mixing effect changes with stand development and climate variation is still unclear. Additionally, little is known about how the mixing effects vary between even- and uneven-aged mixed planting strategies based on the same species combinations and site conditions. In this study, we used dendrochronological methods to reconstruct 37 years of annual growth series for even-aged mixed plantations (EMs) and uneven-aged mixed plantations (UEMs) of Pinus massoniana and Castanopsis hystrix , as well as their respective monocultures at the individual tree (286 trees in total) level. We found that in EMs, the growth of P. massoniana and C. hystrix was 20.8 % lower and 26.2 % higher than those of their monocultures, respectively. However, the growth of P. massoniana remained unchanged during the first 17 years of mixing, after which it was significantly suppressed by C. hystrix. The growth of P. massoniana and C. hystrix in the UEMs was 20.8 % and 26.2 % lower than that in their monocultures, respectively. Remarkably, the mixing effect on the growth of P. massoniana shifted from suppression to promotion after 30 years of mixing. Furthermore, the relative growth of P. massoniana in the UEMs increased with dry season precipitation. These results indicate that transforming pure plantations into uneven-aged mixed plantations may be a crucial forest management strategy for enhancing tree growth and to improving adaptation to future precipitation pattern changes. However, in EMs, thinning should be conducted before fast-growing, shade-intolerant species experience intense light competition. • Even-aged mixture (EM) decreased the growth of both P. massoniana and C. hystrix. • Uneven-aged mixture (UEM) decreased the growth of P. massoniana but increased that of C. hystrix. • The growth of P. massoniana in the EM became suppressed after 17 years of mixing. • The growth of P. massoniana in the UEM became promoted after 30 years of mixing. Climate warming is modifying the movement of air masses over Northern latitudes, producing warming and cooling events across the boreal regions. These new conditions changes may mismatch plant phenology from weather conditions, and affect the growing period of trees. Understanding the processes of local adaptation in bud phenology can help to predict the response of plants to these rapid and unexpected environmental changes.Our study monitored bud burst and bud set weekly during four growing seasons in black spruce [Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.] saplings planted in a common garden and originating from five provenances representing the whole latitudinal distribution of the closed boreal forest in Quebec, Canada. We compared the variance in bud phenology among populations and years, and analysed the relationships with temperatures at the origin sites.Bud burst and bud set occurred in mid‐May and mid‐July, respectively, with a large variability among provenances and between the study years. A delayed bud phenology was observed in the provenances from warmer sites, with bud burst and bud set being 1.1 and 1.4 days later for every additional degree in mean annual temperature at the origin site respectively. Populations with earlier bud bursts also showed earlier bud sets, thus the growing season was similar among provenances. The heritability of bud set was higher than that of bud burst, with estimates of 0.26 and 0.21 respectively. On average, variance in bud phenology among provenances reached 5.3%, which was higher than that within provenances (2.6%). The factor year explained 37.7%–69.7% of the variance in bud phenology.Synthesis. The findings demonstrate the evolutionary response to climate variations in the boreal biome. Endogenous and environmental components have different effects on the phases of bud burst and bud set. This complex interaction among drivers of bud phenology may prevent reliable predictions of changes in the growing season under changing climate. An earlier growth reactivation due to higher spring temperatures could result in higher frost risks to the developing buds. Tree growth is affected by many exogenous and endogenous factors, especially climate and competition. To address the issue of how these factors influence tree growth under global warming, dendroclimatology combined with competition analysis was used to examine the radial growth response of two major species – Pinus massoniana and Schima superba in subtropical monsoon mixed forests in southern China. For growth-climate relationship analysis, residual and ARSTAN chronologies of these two species were compared for the response function analysis over the past several decades. In terms of competition analysis, annual basal area increment (BAI) over several time intervals was calculated and linear mixed model techniques were employed. Several distance-independent competition indices were measured, including density (N), basal area (BA), and sum of diameter at breast height (SDBH). For competition trees with greater diameter (GR) than the subject tree, NGR, BAGR, SDBHGR were also calculated. Growth-climate relationship analysis suggested that tree growth varied in response to climate and was mostly correlated with minimum, mean and maximum air temperature as indicated by the adjusted R 2 value. Summer and winter temperatures had a negative effect on tree growth, while early spring temperature showed positive effects. Competition analysis suggested that subtropical trees had been affected by competition in varying degrees. Trees in the oldest forest had the most competition stress, while trees in younger forests were less affected by competition according to the adjusted R 2 value. Given that subtropical forests in China have been found to have more smaller trees with recent warming, it is expected that these forests will experience a decreasing effect of competition in near future. It is critical to investigate the effects of competition and climate on forest growth as they are main forces affecting forest dynamics. However, in subtropics of China such a study has never been conducted. Here we conducted a pioneer study to evaluate the effects of competition and climate on growth of Chinese red pine (Pinus massoniana) in mixed forests of subtropical China along a broad latitudinal gradient (23°N∼32°N). Twenty-three plots (20m × 20m) were randomly selected from 11 sites and competition and tree radial growth data were collected. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to detect the potential spatial pattern in site-specific standard tree-ring chronologies during the common period (1990-2015). The linear mixed-effect models (LMMs) were employed to quantify the relationships between cumulated basal area increment (5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 years) of subject trees and six distance-independent competition indices. The relationships between tree radial growth and climate were evaluated by response analyses. Finally the best predicted competition index and climate factor were employed in a full model and their relative importance were calculated. The PCA results allowed classifying the mixed forests into southeastern and northern groups along the Nanling Mountains and Wuyi Mountains. LMMs results revealed that competition pressures mainly come from density and size of larger individuals. Response coefficients demonstrated that precipitation in September and sunshine duration in October influenced trees radial growth of southeastern group and northern group respectively. Our results clearly showed that effects of competition on tree radial growth decreased from southeast to north while effects of climates increasing over this large spatial scale. This is the first attempt to clarify the effects of competition, and further quantify the contributions of competition and climate on tree radial growth in China subtropics.
