During undrained cyclic loading, clayey soils experience substantial stiffness and strength degradation when subjected to shear amplitudes exceeding a critical threshold. This paper presents an enhanced bounding surface rate‐independent plasticity model, an evolution of the previous SANICLAY model, tailored to capture this specific behavior during cyclic loading. A distinguishing feature of the proposed model is the introduction of an activation mechanism. This mechanism triggers degradation modeling based on the applied cyclic shear amplitude. To measure this amplitude, the activation mechanism incorporates a novel state variable that serves as a proxy for the applied cyclic stress. The effectiveness of the proposed model is demonstrated by comparing it to experimental data from various materials subjected to cyclic shearing under undrained conditions. The study encompasses a broad range of constant strain or stress amplitudes. Compared to the reference model, the proposed model exhibits improved predictive accuracy for the stress‐strain response of clays at small amplitudes of cyclic loading and large number of cycles. Three quarters of the world's significant urban centers are located in coastal regions where clay minerals are prevalent. The microstructures and physico-mechanical properties of clay sediments are highly susceptible to alterations in pore water chemistry. The pore water chemistry in soil changes easily due to groundwater pollution, seawater erosion, degradation, etc. However, there are several inconsistencies in the literature on the change of physical and mechanical properties of clay soils caused by the change of pore water chemical properties, i.e., disparate experimental results were reported for the same soil property, or varying explanations were proposed for the identical experimental results. Currently, the research in this field mainly focuses on the macroscopic behavioral modifications while lacking the explanations of microscopic mechanism. Therefore, this paper presents a comprehensive review of researches conducted over the past four decades on the impact of pore water chemistry (including salt type, salinity, ion valence, pH) on soil properties such as the microstructure, settlement, Atterberg limits, shear strength, conductivity, unsaturated soil mechanics properties and thermal properties. The fundamental mechanisms underlying the varied experimental observations on clay sediments affected by salt and pH are systematically explored, and deficiencies in this field are identified. The observed dispersion in the literatures is attributed to the spatial variation and heterogeneity of soil compositions, different test methods, and insufficiency of the fundamental microscopic mechanisms of the observed soil behaviors, etc. Therefore, it is necessary to further explore the essential mechanisms of the test results in the future to establish a unified conclusion. There are three main electrochemical factors affecting the electroosmotic flow in clay soil: the voltage loss at the clay/electrode interface, the type of current carriers in the soil, and the ion composition change in the clay due to voltage application. Appropriate evaluation of these factors is important to cost effectively implement electroosmosis for in situ soil consolidation projects. In this study, three different experimental systems were developed and used to investigate electrochemical reactions occurring in reconstituted and natural marine clay during electroosmotic consolidation. The results of polarization tests show that the voltage loss at the clay/electrode interface is different depending on the combination of the clay material and electrode material. The results of electroosmotic element test also show that electroosmotic dehydration does not increase if large current–voltage value is applied and that an optimal current–voltage value for causing electroosmosis depends on the cohesive soil composition. If the clay contains a lot of oxidizable ions, such as sodium, these ions affect electrophoresis and chemical reactions that occur in the soil. Therefore, the optimal configuration to apply electric current also differs depending on the clay. The results of laboratory-scale electroosmotic dehydration tests, arranged in a realistic in situ layout, are performed to study the relationship between soil dehydration, consolidation, and surface crack generation. Plate anchors have great advantages that are useful in deep or ultradeep water mooring systems. The keying behaviors have a deep effect on the embedment loss and pullout capacity of strip plate anchors. In this paper, the effect of soil remolding on the keying behaviors of strip plate anchors is studied by large deformation finite-element (LDFE) analysis. First, the LDFE results are compared with centrifugal test results, theoretical solutions, and LDFE data from previous literature, showing good agreement. Then, a series of LDFE cases is studied to investigate the effects of the padeye offset, load eccentricity, soil sensitivity, and initial embedment depth on the embedment loss and pullout capacity of plate anchors during the keying process. The LDFE results show that different load eccentricity corresponds to different soil failure mechanisms, and both padeye offset and soil remolding will reduce the pullout capacity of plate anchors. Finally, an equivalent soil strength is introduced considering rate effect and soil remolding of clay. A combined factor and an equivalent ultimate pullout capacity are used to estimate the ultimate embedment loss and pullout capacity of strip plate anchors in uniform clay, respectively. Stratum cavity collapse induced by water and sand leakage in a subway tunnel is a sudden urban geological disaster, which can cause serious casualties and economic losses. In response to the hazards of stratum cavity collapse induced by water and sand leakage around subway tunnels, a set of visual test devices with variable hole diameters were designed to simulate the stratum cavity collapse induced by water and sand leakage under comprehensive consideration of the size of the cavity diameter, clay thickness, clay strength, and so on. Based on pressure arch theory and unified strength theory, a critical calculation formula was established for stratum cavity collapse under two modes, of tensile shear and shear failure. Furthermore, the accuracy of the theoretical calculation formula was verified by experiment. The results show that the critical radius increases with the increase of clay strength and decreases with the increase of buried depth and friction angle. Clay soil is more prone to shear failure at the arch foot under the same conditions. The larger the soil sand mix ratio and the cavity diameter, the smaller the critical water pressure of soil collapse. The thicker the soil layer, the greater the critical water pressure. The theoretical analysis method has a clear physical meaning and the theoretical results agree well with the test results. Low-volume roads are anticipated to have less traffic and provide access to socio-economic activities in rural areas. The present study deals with the stabilisation of soil with locally available waste materials, i.e. low calcium fly ash (FA) and brick dust (BD). These two wastes are available abundantly and lead to an increase in pollution levels. Initially, lime was added to make the silty clayey soils plastic-free. The initial consumption of lime was found to be 5%. Then, the soil was stabilised with cement fly ash and cement brick dust techniques for strength, durability and shrinkage evaluation. The cement was varied from 2 to 8% with FA and BD by fixing the ratio to 1:3 as per AASHTO guidelines. The unconfined compressive strength (UCS), indirect tensile strength test and California bearing ratio were conducted for strength evaluation. The wetting and drying cycles were evaluated for durability analysis. The linear shrinkage cracking was evaluated after the curing period of 28 days. It was observed that there was a magnificent increase in strength and durability values. The maximum UCS attained value was so high that it could act as a replacement for the granular sub-base layer in the pavement structure. The linear shrinkage evaluated at fixed relative humidity was significantly reduced. The statistical analysis reported that there was a significant difference between the two admixtures. Electrokinetics has gained importance as a sustainable soil modification and remediation method for improving problematic sites. The formation of cracks during the electrokinetic treatment is an important concern during the field implementation of the process. Therefore, considering this, this study investigated the impact of a voltage gradient on the performance evaluation of electrokinetic consolidation clayey soil after adding a lime. The performance was evaluated regarding cumulative discharge, surface settlement, power consumption, reducing water content, alteration in soil pH, and crack formation. The surface settlement increases by 50% for the applied voltage gradient of 1.00 V/cm compared to that of 0.25 V/cm. The power consumption in the case of 1.00 V/cm after the addition of lime is 3.67 times compared to that without lime; however, the difference is insignificant for 0.50 V/cm. Further, the pH near the cathode increases to 10.94 from 7.81 after the addition of lime in the case of 0.50 V/cm. Containment of hazardous waste is one of the methods that can be used today for its disposal worldwide, especially in landfills. In order to preserve groundwater, landfills are constructed on a natural or reconstituted clay layer of low permeability, known as a passive safety barrier. This paper presents an experimental laboratory study that aims to upgrade local materials for use as a passive barrier in the bottoms of hazardous waste storage facilities (HWSCs). The basic materials are clays from the Adrar region in southern Algeria. An experimental study based on physical-chemical characterization and mechanical tests was performed on 2 samples of clayey soils (AA, Adrar clay, and AB, Bouda clay). Physico-chemical and mechanical characterization of Adrar clay (AA) mixtures with lime was conducted to minimize swelling and improve the studied soil. This study uses fly-ash-based superplasticized geopolymer by adding a naphthalene-centered superplasticizer to the geopolymerized soil. Alkali-binder ratios and alkali-activator ratios are varied simultaneously with a molarity of 10M. The optimum dosages of binder, geopolymer, and superplasticized geopolymer are found from unconfined compression tests. California Bearing Ratio (CBR), pH, consolidation, water-holding capacity, and microstructure tests were performed on optimum dosages. The clayey soil's undrained shear strength and CBR value increased as the geopolymer was superplasticized. The 28-day undrained shear strength of geopolymerized clay was around 300 kPa, attained within three days of the curing period with superplasticized geopolymer. This is because adding a superplasticizer increases the polymerization reaction rate and improves the geopolymer's performance. The maximum undrained shear strength was attained within seven days of the curing period for both cases. The undrained shear strength after a curing period of 7, 14, and 28 days for geopolymer and superplasticized geopolymer was found to be almost the same value, which shows that after seven days, curing has little role in strength improvement. The hydraulic conductivity and coefficient of consolidation of geopolymerized soil increased with the addition of superplasticizer due to the reduction in fine particles and plasticity of the residual soil. Microstructural studies using scanning electron microscope and x-ray diffraction techniques showed an interaction between soil, geopolymer, and superplasticizer, thus confirming the formation of geopolymer gel and increased polymerization rate with the superplasticizer. Searching for alternative material options to reduce the extraction of natural resources is essential for promoting a more sustainable world. This is especially relevant in construction and infrastructure projects, where significant volumes of materials are used. This paper aims to introduce three alternative materials, crushed ground glass (GG), recycled gypsum (GY) and crushed lime waste (CLW), byproducts of construction industry geomaterials, to enhance the mechanical properties of clay soil in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. These materials show promise as cementitious and frictional agents, combined with soil and cement. Rigorous testing, including tests on unconfined compressive strength (qu) and initial stiffness (Go) and with a scanning electron microscope (SEM), reveals a correlation between strength, stiffness and the novel porosity/binder index (η/Civ) and provides mixed design equations for the novel geomaterials. Micro-level analyses show the formation of hydrated calcium silicates and complex interactions among the waste materials, cement and clay. The technique of mass soil stabilization using alternative binders to Portland cement (PC) has been used successfully in the past. However, knowledge gaps exist regarding the design of these binders. Ground-granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) has been widely used as a substitute for PC; however, it requires an alkaline activator (e.g. lime and PC) to promote pozzolanic reaction and strength enhancement. A candidate that presents a less energy-intensive manufacturing and carbon footprint is carbide lime (CL), a by-product of acetylene gas production, rich in Ca(OH)2. The main problem with the pozzolanic binder in the stabilization technique is its slow reaction kinetics and the long time required for laboratory-scale investigations before in situ application. Therefore, this research presents a dosing study of a ternary binder (TB) comprising CL, GGBS and PC type III (CEM-III) to mass-stabilize a clayey organic soil using thermal curing as an innovative technique to improve the feasibility of laboratory-scale investigations. The effects of binder composition and thermal curing time on the evolution of strength, stiffness, mineralogy, and microstructure were determined. The results, supported by a statistical analysis (ANOVA) and by a multivariate regression analysis (MRA), have shown that the new TB produced a superior mechanical response to soil samples stabilized exclusively with CEM-III. This was evidenced by a less porous microstructure (more reaction products) and mainly the formation of a C–A–S–H gel, as a product of CEM-III hydration and alkaline activation of GGBS (blended cement), whereby the CL content played a key role for the development of the long-term pozzolanic reaction. Due to the increase in population, the demand for buildings increases. The engineering properties of the soils on which these structures will be built may not always meet the desired conditions. In such cases, soil improvement methods are used. One of these methods is additive used stabilization, in which additives such as lime, fly ash, volcanic ash and tuff, silica fume, and blast furnace slag are used. This method has been used successfully for years. However, in recent years, interest in the use of different types of fibers has increased. Some of these fibers are glass, basalt, polypropylene, and carbon. Basalt fibers have begun to attract attention in soil reinforcement applications due to the properties of their raw material, basalt rock, which is widely distributed in nature, natural, and has high strength. In this study, the effect of basalt fiber reinforcement on the unconfined compressive strength of high plasticity bentonite clay was revealed. For this purpose, 12 mm long basalt fiber in different proportions (1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5%) was used as reinforcement in bentonite clay, and the optimum fiber ratio that provided the maximum increase in strength was determined. According to the results of the study, when 12 mm long basalt fiber was used as reinforcement in bentonite clay, the maximum strength value was obtained at a 4% basalt fiber ratio. However, the strength value decreased in the sample where 5% BF was used. It has been determined that basalt fiber reinforcement improves the strength properties of bentonite clay. Piles as onshore and offshore foundation structures are often horizontally loaded. The usual calculation method for the behaviour of piles under such loads is the p‐y method. For piles in cohesive soil, several p‐y methods are proposed in literature, leading in general to differing results. A finite element model dealing with the behaviour of horizontally loaded piles in clay soils was established and validated against field tests. Utilising the results of a vast number of numerical simulations, a new p‐y method was developed, which gives reasonable results over the entire range of possible loads for piles of almost arbitrary diameters and embedded lengths in clay soils of varying consistency. The method requires in total six soil parameters and accounts for the actual deflection of the pile and also the effect of pile tip shear resistance by iteratively adapted y‐multipliers which depend on the course of the deflection line and the distance of the considered point to the pile tip. The new method can be generally used for calculation of the bearing behaviour of piles in soft clay under monotonic loading and can serve as a reference for consideration of cyclic load effects or softening effects in stiff clays. A method for the estimation of the non-linear, time-dependent settlement of piled raft foundations (PRFs) embedded in saturated clayey soils subjected to uniformly distributed load under the single-drainage condition was developed. A total of 20 different rectangular PRFs resting on four different types of normally consolidated to moderately overconsolidated clays (overconsolidation ratios of 1, 2 and 5) were analysed to quantify their short- and long-term settlements. Rigorous three-dimensional, elasto-plastic finite-element (FE) analyses were performed with the critical-state-based modified Cam Clay soil constitutive model. Biot's coupled consolidation theory was used to model the time-dependent dissipation of excess pore pressure under the single-drainage condition. The FE analysis results were used to investigate systematically the influence of time and various soil and PRF parameters on the settlement responses of piled rafts. Fitted equations correlating PRF settlements and the degree of consolidation with various influencing parameters were developed. The proposed equations predicted the immediate and primary consolidation settlements and the degree of consolidation with reasonable accuracy and can be used in initial design stages. Phyllite soil and red clay belong to the soils that negatively impact the engineering performance of railway subgrade and may cause subgrade bulges, uneven subgrade settlement, and other subgrade distresses. In order to make full use of these two soils, a collaborative improvement plan was proposed. A series of tests were conducted to analyze the synergistic effects of lime and red clay on the improvement of phyllite soil. The tests included the no loading swelling ratio, swelling pressure, consolidation, and direct shear tests. Additionally, scanning electron microscopy was used to investigate the role of lime and red clay in soil improvement. The test results show that a red clay ratio of 60% + lime content of 3% is the optimal composite improvement scheme. The scheme led to a 93% reduction in the no loading swelling ratio and an 88% reduction in swelling pressure. Additionally, cohesion, the internal friction angle, and the compression modulus increased by 345%, 73%, and 373%. Red clay and lime had weak synergistic improvement effects on the no loading swelling ratio, the swelling pressure, and the internal friction angle of phyllite soil, that is, the synergistic improvement effect of red clay and lime was less than the sum of the single improvement effect but greater than the single improvement effect. Red clay and lime had a strong synergistic improvement effect on the cohesion and the compression modulus of phyllite, that is, the synergistic improvement effect of red clay and lime was greater than the sum of the single improvement effect. The microstructure analysis test results show that red clay can fill the pores of phyllite soil and improve its immediate strength. Through hardening and cementation, lime can enhance the strength of phyllite soil as well as address the issue of the reduced engineering properties of phyllite soil and red clay when exposed to water. Understanding of factors governing soil structural features is necessary for managing key processes affecting crop productivity and environmental impacts of agriculture, for example, soil water balance, aeration, and root penetration. Organic matter is known to act as a major binding agent in soil aggregation and thus constitutes a central pillar in soil structure formation. However, knowledge of the structural role of organic matter or carbon (OC) in soils highly rich in clay‐sized particles (<0.002 mm) is limited. In this study, the effects of clay and OC contents on aggregate stability, water holding capacity, near‐saturated hydraulic conductivity, total porosity, and pore size distribution were assessed in cultivated fields with high clay content located in private crop production farms in southern Finland. Significant positive correlations were found between OC content and proportion of water stable aggregates and specific pore sizes from the range of 30 μm up to 1 mm diameter determined by image analysis. Porosities on a smaller size range derived from water retention measurements likewise showed a positive correlation with OC in <0.2 μm sizes. On the range of 0.2–1 μm, a negative relationship was observed, which induced a negative effect of OC on soil plant available water reserves. In line with the positive correlation between OC and larger soil pores, free water, representing the amount of water that can be drained by gravity, exhibited a positive relationship with OC suggesting that OC content can enhance aeration of soils with high clay content. Compared to OC, clay content tended to have an adverse effect on soil structural properties. Clay correlated negatively with pores larger than 30 μm, free water content, and extrapolated field saturated hydraulic conductivity. Further, our imaging results showed how saturated hydraulic conductivity was controlled by pore morphology, and there was a power law relationship between the conductivity and critical pore diameter. Overall, the structural impacts and hydrological implications of OC and clay in heavy clay soils vary by pore size ranges and their emergent practical impacts are thus not straightforward. This case study focuses on twelve compacted clay soil samples to understand their fundamental physical and thermal properties. For each sample, the density, thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, specific heat, and drying shrinkage were assessed. The identification and characterisation of the materials were also carried out by positioning them into the ternary diagram based on the percentage of sand, silt, and clay. These properties are definitive for the performance characteristics of materials used in rammed earth wall construction. The aim is to provide information for better knowledge and prediction regarding the dynamic heat flow in rammed earth walls. Experimental results show a relatively wide range of values for each property, reflecting the diverse properties of the sampled clays. The thermophysical characteristics of the 12 types of earth analysed showed correlations with reports in the literature in terms of density (1490–2150 kg/m3), porosity (23.22–39.99%), specific heat capacity (701–999 J/kgK), and thermal conductivity (0.523–1.209 W/mK), which indicates them as materials suitable for use in the construction of rammed earth walls. Using test data, a dynamic assessment of heat flow through simulated rammed earth walls was performed. For a better understanding of the results obtained, they were compared with results obtained for simulations where the building element would be made of concrete, i.e., a mineral wool core composite. Thus, heat flux at the wall surface and mass flux, respectively, during the 16 years of operation showed similar evolution for all 12 types of clay material analysed, with small variations explained by differences in thermophysical characteristics specific to each type of S1–S12 earth. In the case of walls made from clay material, there is a stabilisation in the evolution of the water content phenomenon by the 5th year of simulation. This contrasts with walls made of concrete, where the characteristic water content appears to evolve continuously over the 16-year period. Therefore, it can be said that in the case of the construction elements of existing buildings, which have already gone through a sufficient period for the maturation of the materials in their construction elements, the rammed earth wall quickly develops a moisture buffer function. In the case of simulating a mineral wool core composite wall, it cannot perform as a temperature or humidity buffer, exhibiting an enthalpy exchange with indoor air that is only 4% of that of the rammed earth walls; consequently, it does not play a significant role in regulating indoor comfort conditions. Overall, there is confirmation of the temperature and moisture buffering capabilities of rammed earth walls during both warm and cold periods of the year, which is consistent with other reports in the literature. The findings of this research provide a better insight into clay as a material for rammed earth walls for more efficient design and construction, offering potential improvements regarding indoor comfort, energy efficiency, and sustainability. The data also provides useful information in the fields of architecture and civil engineering regarding the use of clay as an eco-friendly building material. Abstract—The response of sandy and clay subsurface soils, representing classes of non-cohesive and cohesive soils, during seismic motion of various intensities is analyzed based on the in situ observations—records by seismic vertical arrays of the Japanese strong motion network KiK-net. From a total of ~800 stations, five stations with sandy and five stations with clayey subsurface soils represented in the upper layers in their purest forms were selected for the analysis. For sandy and clayey stations, models of soil behavior during strong motion were constructed by the method of (Pavlenko and Irikura, 2003), showing vertical distributions of stresses and strains induced by strong motion in soil layers; and the behaviors were compared. Similar estimates of the amplification of seismic waves in sands and clays during weak motions and similar stress-strain relations describing the behavior of subsurface soils during moderate seismic motions are obtained. The liquefaction of sandy soils during strong motions (the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, Mw ~ 9.0) and the effects of extended seismic source (the directivity of seismic radiation) on the behavior of sandy and clayey soils and amplification of seismic waves are analyzed. Differences in the behavior of sandy and clayey soils are observed only during strong motions, namely, liquefaction occurs in sandy soils (when the groundwater level is about several meters from the surface), but never in clayey soils. In this paper, a constitutive model is presented to model the behavior of various soils (sand and clay) in different loading conditions and the minimum required parameters are obtained. Although some practical features (concepts) of the bounding surface framework and modified Cam-Clay have been employed in its formulations, the model is developed mainly based on the generalized plasticity framework. Moreover, some concepts such as dilatancy relation and loading history surface are redefined. Finally, the proposed constitutive model is evaluated using the experimental data related to two different sandy soils and three different clays under different loading conditions. Finally, it is concluded that the proposed constitutive model can easily be calibrated for various clayey and sandy soils. In this study, the combined effect of temperature (T) and pore water salinity on electrical surface conduction parameters was investigated. Two new electrical surface conduction parameters, namely, electrical conductivity of effective solid (σs) and size of diffuse double layer (DDL) water per unit volume of soil (χ), were considered in this study. The tested samples included two commercially available clays and four natural clay soils with diverse physico-chemical properties. The two surface conduction parameters were also used to assess the influence of temperature (T) and pore water salinity, as well as the electrical conductivity of free water (σFW), on the evolution of the free swelling index (FSI) of clays/clay soils through experimental methods. The findings suggested that elevated temperature and σFW increased σs but reduced χ, as well as the FSI of clays/clay soils. Furthermore, the rate of reduction for both χ and FSI augmented under the influence of increased free water salinity, particularly for clays/clay soils with high swelling capacity. However, the application of the effect of a chemically depolymerized form of PET, i.e., Bis (2-Hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET) has not been performed as an additive in Compacted Clay Liners (CCLs) for landfills. This research focuses on the effect of the air curing period (1 and 28 days) on the hydromechanical behavior of BHET-treated SBM (0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 % by dry weight). Results from One Dimensional Consolidation tests showed that an increase in BHET content reduced both compressibility and hydraulic conductivity of SBM due to pore clogging mechanism of swollen BHET hydrogel, however, hydraulic conductivity reduced over 28 days of curing due to loss in re-swelling availability of the hydrogel, thereby allowing less tortuous paths to flow. Results from Consolidated-Drained Direct Shear tests showed that for 1 and 28-days curing, BHET treatment to SBM increased the cohesion (c') due to strong polymer interparticle bridging, however, polymer coating over the sand grains causes a reduction in its surface roughness to decrease the frictional angle (ϕ'). SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and EDX (Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) analysis on BHET-treated specimens support the flocculation of bentonite, polymer bridging of sand and clay-sand polymer links. A significant Pb2+ removal capacity was also observed with BHET-treated SBM from the batch tests. FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) analysis on batch sorption specimens confirms the role of the carbonyl groups (C = O) and hydroxyl groups (OH) present in the BHET structure indicating the possibility to adsorb Pb2+. The deep soil mixing (DSM) method is used to improve the mechanical and/or hydraulic properties of soils. The DSM method refers to an in situ mixing of soil, water, and hydraulic binder without excavation. After describing the specific microstructure of DSM materials compared with soils or concrete, four porosity–permeability analytical models from literature and based on microstructural parameters (i.e., porosity and pore-size distribution derived from mercury intrusion porosimetry) were applied to predict the water permeability (K) of soil–cement mixtures. After comparing the estimated permeabilities (Kest) with the experimental measurements of such a parameter (Kexp) using a triaxial cell, an indicator parameter A (=Kest/Kexp) was proposed to evaluate the ability of each model to fit the water circulation in DSM material. By calculating the average ratio 〈A〉 from the 24 materials in the studied database, three of the four applied models satisfactorily estimated the water permeability of the studied DSM materials. To reach an 〈A〉 value closer to 1, an extension of the Aït-Mokhtar's model, initially developed for cementitious mortars, was proposed by considering the specificities of the DSM materials. If previous models used only the contribution of nanopores less than 100 nm to the water flow, the extended model considered the contribution of all pore populations in the permeability calculation. The spectral behavior of soil will change through degradation, which makes it difficult to retrieve soil properties using previously developed models. This study aims to use linear [including partial least squares regression (PLSR) and ratio soil index (RSI)] and nonlinear [including partial least squares-backpropagation neural network (PLS-BPNN) and partial least squares-random forest (PLS-RF)] models to estimate soil electrical conductivity (EC) and clay content in dust sources. For this purpose, 142 soil samples were collected in Khuzestan province. After laboratory spectroscopic analysis, the area and depth of diagnostic absorption features (AFs) of continuum removed (CR) spectra were calculated. The results revealed that with increasing clay content, the depth of AFs at 1400, 1900, and 2200 nm will increase. Meanwhile, an increase in the soil salinity will increase the depth and area of AFs in 1450 and 1915 nm and decrease the depth and area of AF in 2200 nm. Spectral ranges of 2100–2300 and 1400–1600 nm were identified as the most important portions of the visible and near-infrared spectrum for analyzing clay content and EC, respectively. The RSI method performed poorly in soil salinity and clay content estimation. PLSR and PLS-RF methods overestimated clay content and salinity in low values. The PLS-BPNN model had the best performance for estimating clay content (RPIQ = 4.51) and EC (RPIQ = 4.76). In this paper, a simplified chemo‐hydro‐mechanics (CHM) model, in which only solute concentration is considered in the aspect of chemistry, is proposed to reflect the viscoelastic deformation of clay soil. By using the proposed model, the responses of the excess pore‐fluid pressure, solute concentration, and displacement of the viscoelastic clay soil are derived through the Laplace transform method. Then, semi‐analytical solutions, in the time domain, are obtained via the inverse Laplace transform numerically. The influences of viscosity on excess pore‐fluid pressure, solute concentration, and displacement are investigated through an illustrative example. The results show that: (1) the clay soil in low viscosity can be simplified as an elastic model; (2) the higher viscosity not only accelerates the dissipation of excess pore‐fluid pressure, but also slows down the deformation of the clay soil; (3) the viscosity of clay soil poses little impact on the distribution of solute concentration. In the literature, the influence of spatial variability of the undrained shear strength of foundation soils on the bearing capacity of footings is limited to footings seated directly on the foundation. This is an unlikely arrangement in practice. This paper revisits the footing problem by considering a thin granular layer between a strip footing and soft foundation soil using analytical and stochastic numerical modeling. The analyses are extended to the case of a geosynthetic-reinforced granular layer and to the idealized case of no granular layer. The study shows that the probability that the ultimate bearing capacity for the footing is smaller than the deterministic design value is greater for all three scenarios with randomly uniform clay soil than for the same soil with isotropic or anisotropic spatial variability of strength at practical levels of reliability index β (e.g., β≥3.09 for a permanent footing). The reason for this outcome, which may appear counterintuitive, is explained. Design charts are provided to estimate the deterministic design bearing capacity of a rigid strip footing required to meet a range of target reliability index for the three footing scenarios examined in this study. The earliest method of waste disposal is dumping waste in landfills. The important component of landfills which prevents the passage of leachate to the subsoil is defined as the bottom liner. A landfill liner must contain a specific range in terms of swelling behavior, strength, and permeability before placing down beneath the constructed landfills. The present paper summarizes the detail of the different materials and their feasibility which satisfy the criteria to be used as landfills liner. The detail of findings of microstructural analysis (SEM–EDX, XRD, FT-IR, etc.) along with the waste materials which compact the particles and enhance the strength and stability of soils is also discussed. A lot of landfill liner materials such as Bentonite, sand, fly ash, cement, biochar, marine clay, lateritic soil, and geosynthetics have been used to enhance the geotechnical properties of liners. Among all, geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) and compacted clay liner (CCL) show increased hydraulic conductivity for clay soil with high plasticity whereas this value reduces for clayey soil having low plasticity with the increase in the concentration of the salt solution. The hydraulic conductivity of the mix containing biochar, bentonite, and sand is found to be 1 × 10−9 m/s. The hydraulic conductivity and shear strength of the soil increases while the compressibility of the soil decreases with an increase in the biochar percentage having smaller particle size. Also, the alkaline activator is suggested to be best for soil stabilization as compared to standard Portland cement. The development of new materials must be environmentally sustainable and should contain sufficient shear strength so that it can sustain the overburdened load of dumped waste. Road and subway tunnels in soft clay soils subjected to traffic loading often cause lager settlement. It can pose danger to the surrounding buildings and structures. Hence, it is necessary for engineers to correctly predict the long-term deformation of saturated clay foundations under cyclic loading. In this paper, a series of dynamic triaxial tests were carried out on Nanning clay to investigate the effect of loading frequency and cyclic stress on axial strain accumulation of clay under undrained condition. Results show that loading frequency has a great effect on the axial strain accumulation of clay. Desiccation cracking in clay soils is a combined mechanical and hydraulic problem and such soils can be improved by various methods including reinforcement with fibres. The relationships between tensile strength, cracking resistance and water-retention properties of fibre-reinforced fine-grained soils lack coverage in the literature to date. In this study, these three properties are evaluated and connected by way of a series of tensile strength and desiccation cracking tests on fibre-reinforced London clay. The results confirm that increased fibre addition delays the occurrence of peak stress and changes failure behaviour from brittle to ductile. The tensile strength increment gets higher as water content decreases, and reaches a maximum value of 460 kPa when the water content is 12%. The crack intensity factor reduces from 7.20% to 0.89% when 12 mm long fibre is used at a ratio of 0.9%. Fibre reinforcement also changes the crack development pattern by reducing the size of large cracks and increasing the proportion of small individual cracks. However, the presence of fibres was not observed to change the water-retention properties of the soil, indicating that the tensile improvement comes from the pull-out resistance of the fibres rather than suction changes. Chemical treatment with cementitious materials is a common and economic solution to improving the mechanical behavior of contaminated clay soil. In this research, Portland cement and lime were used to treat kaolinite contaminated with anthracene and glycerol. The samples were cured for 7 days and their unconfined compressive strength (UCS) was determined. The results showed that the UCS of kaolinite contaminated with anthracene and glycerol was less than that of clean clay. In samples contaminated with anthracene, treatment with 3% Portland cement was roughly equivalent to that of 10% lime. In samples contaminated with glycerol, treatment with 9% Portland cement was equivalent to that of 10% lime. The results were verified by scanning electron microscopy. Triaxial unconsolidated undrained testing was carried out at different confining pressures on samples having similar UCS values. The results revealed that anthracene and glycerol contamination reduced the ultimate deviatoric stress and that the maximum deviatoric stress decreased as the amount of contamination increased. Also, the cohesion and internal friction angle decreased as the amounts of anthracene and glycerol increased. This could be attributed to the polarity, dielectric constant and viscosity of the organic material. All Portland cement–treated and lime–treated samples at the different confining pressures had higher peak shear strength values than the untreated ones. The maximum triaxial compression strength of specimens with equivalent UCS values was similar at low confining pressures, but an increase in confinement caused the Portland cement to perform better. Stable isotope ratios of hydrogen (δ2H values) in local meteoric water correlate with those of nonexchangeable H (δ2H n) in bulk soil and organic matter, allowing for probabilistic spatial assignments to soil samples. We hypothesized that there is a similar correlation between the δ2H values of local meteoric water and the δ2H n value of soil clay fractions. The H pool of topsoil clay fractions is usually dominated by pedogenic clay minerals, which contain structural hydroxyl-H, preserving the δ2H values of ambient water at the time mineral formation. We applied a steam equilibration method with water vapors of known δ2H values to determine δ2H n values in soil clay fractions by eliminating the influence of easily exchangeable H. We collected topsoil samples from 24 locations on five continents with a wide variation in δ2H values of meteoric water. To calculate δ2H n values via steam equilibration, the equilibrium fractionation factor between exchangeable H in the clay fractions and equilibration waters (α ex–w) is needed, which is, however, unknown. We therefore assessed the effect of α ex-w values from 1 (no fractionation) to α ex-w = 1.08, which has been used in steam equilibration approaches of organic matter and bulk soil, on the δ2H n values of soil clay fractions. The δ2H n values of the clay fractions ranged from –167 ± SD1‰ for a northern Siberian sample to –44 ± 4‰ in western Kenya for α ex-w = 1 and from −191 ± 5 to –81 ± 5‰ for α ex-w = 1.08. The δ2H values of local meteoric water correlated significantly with the δ2H n values of the clay fractions (r = 0.85 for α ex-w = 1 and 0.65 for α ex-w = 1.08, p < 0.001). A multiple regression model including hillslope as a possible measure of the accumulation of clay minerals with a slightly different δ2H n value from nearby locations by eolian or aqueous transport in addition to the mean seasonal δ2H values of local meteoric water explained up to 89% of the observed variation in δ2H values of the clay fractions. Our results demonstrate that the δ2H n values of soil clay fractions are driven by the δ2H values of local precipitation on a global scale, irrespective of the used α ex–w value and influenced by the mineral type. Overcoming previous methodological limitations opens up opportunities for probabilistic spatial assignments of unknown organic matter-poor topsoil samples, applications to paleosoil problems or to experimentally track clay mineral neoformation in soils by tracer experiments. Land subsidence in coastal and delta cities often results in infrastructure and residential building damages, while also increasing the area's flooding vulnerability. The coastal cities of Messolonghi and Aitolikon are typical examples, as they are built on top of old stream deposits near the coast. In the last several years, the gradual subsidence of the sites, combined with the impact of climate change, resulted in multiple floods. The rush of seawater over the lowlands has also been reported. Persistent scatterer interferometry (PSI) is a remote-sensing technique that can provide a reliable and cost-effective solution, as it can be used to identify and monitor soil displacements. In this study, a novel parallelized PSI (P-PSI) processing chain, developed by the Operational Unit Center for Earth Observation Research and Satellite Remote Sensing (BEYOND) of the National Observatory of Athens, as well as the Copernicus EGMS product were used to identify these displacements. The results were examined in correlation with other potential factors such as the overexploitation of the underground water, the natural compaction of the clay soil layers, the primary and secondary consolidation due to the external construction loading, the oxidation of the organic soils, tidal gauge data, precipitation data, and ground truth data. In Messolonghi, various deformation rates were recorded, with maximum mean values of −5 mm/year in the eastern part, whereas in Aitolikon, the maximum values were around −4.5 mm/year. The displacements were mostly attributed to the primary consolidation due to the building loads. Deformation patterns and their correlation with precipitation could also be witnessed. The main objective of this paper is investigation of clayey soil setup effects on axial "resistance" and "stiffness" of small-scale piles with special attention on "overconsolidation ratio" (OCR) and "installation method". A consolidation chamber is developed and an instrumented model pile is either driven or jacked-in through saturated consolidated Kaolinite clay at different OCRs of 1.2 (normally consolidated, NC) and 4.8 (over consolidated, OC). The pile was static load tested at different time intervals of 1 h through 90 days. Higher pore pressures are induced during pile installation in NC compared to OC clay. The frictional resistance of OC soil is higher than NC at end of drive as well as end of setup in both driven and jacked-in piles. The frictional resistance of jacked-in piles is greater than driven piles at end of drive, but due to higher rate of setup, the long-term frictional resistance of driven piles is shown to be greater, attributed to more disturbance of the soil during installation of driven piles. Attempts are made to differentiate between the contributions of dissipation of excess pore pressure and non-pore pressure components for each consolidation condition and pile installation method. The utilization of industrial by-products as stabilizers is gaining attention from the sustainability perspective. Along these lines, granite sand (GS) and calcium lignosulfonate (CLS) are used as alternatives to traditional stabilizers for cohesive soil (clay). The unsoaked California Bearing Ratio (CBR) was taken as a performance indicator (as a subgrade material for low-volume roads). A series of tests were performed by varying the dosages of GS (30%, 40%, and 50%) and CLS (0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, and 2%) for different curing periods (0, 7, and 28 days). This study revealed that the optimal dosages of granite sand (GS) are 35%, 34%, 33%, and 32% for dosages of calcium lignosulfonate (CLS) of 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, and 2.0%, respectively. These values are needed to maintain a reliability index greater than or equal to 3.0 when the coefficient of variation (COV) of the minimum specified value of the CBR is 20% for a 28-day curing period. The proposed RBDO (reliability-based design optimization) presents an optimal design methodology for designing low-volume roads when GS and CLS are blended for clay soils. The optimal mix, i.e., 70% clay blended with 30% GS and 0.5% CLS (exhibiting the highest CBR value) is considered an appropriate dosage for the pavement subgrade material. Carbon footprint analysis (CFA) was performed on a typical pavement section according to Indian Road Congress recommendations. It is observed that the use of GS and CLS as stabilizers of clay reduces the carbon energy by 97.52% and 98.53% over the traditional stabilizers lime and cement at 6% and 4% dosages, respectively. In this paper, the finite element method (FEM) is applied to calculate the bearing capacity of two footings having the aspect ratio L/B (where L and B are the length and width of the footing, respectively) equal to 1, 2 resting on one-layer and two-layer soil. Soil profile contains two soil types including sand and clay. The soil strip is 500mm × 500mm × 350mm; however, only a quarter of the model (250mm × 250mm × 350mm) is examined in the study. Two primary situations are investigated in this study. In the first situation, the one-layer system is supposed to be sandy soil with footing overlays on medium-dense sand. The soft clay/stabilized clayey layer is supposed to be on top of the sandy soil in the second condition, with the footing resting on top of the soft clay/stabilized clay. The influence of layer thickness, aspect ratio, and material property on the bearing capacity value and footing failure mechanism is studied for eight different combinations of layered soil. The bearing capacity for a one-layer case is also estimated, and it agrees well with Vesic (1973), Hansen (1970), and Terzaghi's (1943) equations. The bearing capacity of footings is observed to decline when the height of unstabilized clayey soil increases, and it increases when clayey soil is stabilized with molasses, waste foundry sand, and lime alone and in combination with each other. In this article, the effects of environmental acidity on the mechanical and volumetric properties of cement-stabilized clay soils have been investigated through various tests on experimental scale. In this study, a problematic clay was chemically stabilized by cement under three treatment conditions including short term, medium term, and long term with different conditions varying from acid to alkaline environments, which were tested by different methods to evaluate their mechanical and volumetric behavior and properties. Mechanical characteristics assessment tests in this study include compaction tests, and unconfined compressive strength, which was conducted on samples under different conditions in terms of acidity and treatment time. The results of the study indicated that soil improvement by cement increases the mechanical strength and decreases the rate of soil swelling over time and treatment duration. However, the degree of acidity of the environment affects the chemical reactions of soil and cement, especially cement hydration, which causes changes in soil strength and volume variation due to swelling. In this paper, a modified/extended rotational hardening (RH) rule is applied to the nonassociated simple anisotropic constitutive model, SANICLAY-D, for clayey soils. In the proposed model, the destructuration mechanism, as well as zero and nonzero fabric anisotropy at critical state (CS), are considered. A detailed model formulation with the RH rule that yields a unique CS in the e-ln(p′) space is presented including an appropriate form of the relatively simple substepping integration algorithm. In addition, the model is implemented into ABAQUS finite-element software using a User-defined Material (UMAT) subroutine and used in the simulation of various experimental tests. The modified SANICLAY-D model (SANICLAY-MD) is meticulously calibrated step by step for Saint-Alban sensitive soft clay. Drained and undrained triaxial tests after various consolidation paths as well as the direct simple shear (DSS) test are simulated for Saint-Alban and Bothkennar clays as a boundary value problem. Simulation results approve the SANICLAY-MD model's performance in the prediction of the natural soil behavior. Results show that neglecting the effect of fabric anisotropy at CS and destructuration of natural clays can lead to inaccurate prediction in the constitutive modeling of intact soft soils. The current practices in the recent development of fired clay brick (FCB) by adopting waste materials have tremendously reduced the usage of the primary source of FCB, which is clay soil (CS). In this study, the main objective is to reduce the utilisation of CS as the main component in the FCBmaking process. Other waste materials such as soda lime silica (SLS) glass bottles, and sea shells (SS) were also added into the precursor admixtures. The admixtures containing CS, SLS and SS were mixed according to the empirical formula of (1-x)[40SLS - 60CS]: x[SS] = 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 wt.%. A batch of 40 g mixture was prepared, and 21% water was added. The admixtures were mixed, moulded into a rectangular brick shape, and dried before the sintering process at 850 °C. The physical properties of the FCB were investigated as a function of the SS content in the form of apparent density, linear shrinkage, loss of ignition and plasticity. As a result, the apparent density and loss of ignition of the FCB increased from 1.91 gcm-3 to 2.31 gcm-3 and 10.60 % to 20.81%, respectively. The linear shrinkage and plasticity percentage decreased from 2.50% to 2.27% and 11.01% to 8.70% with an increase of SS content.
