We aimed to survey the findings of phenomenological studies built up in the field of diabetes care in Sweden. This is a meta-synthesis of phenomenological studies on experiences related to diabetes in Sweden focusing on learning to live with diabetes. We proceeded by reference to the seven phases of Noblit & Hare. We examined papers from seven phenomenological studies on learning to live with diabetes in Sweden. From the papers, which describe the experience of living with diabetes, three overarching themes were selected—perception and awareness of the body; integration and responsibility; and presence of others who provide support. From those describing the expert's experience, an overarching theme emerged—encouraging reflection in persons with diabetes. We interpreted each of these themes in phenomenological terms and compared them with theories in Japan. Persons with diabetes take responsibility for coping with a range of things brought on by the illness and learn to live with diabetes. Experts support these persons so they can see their world objectively and critically scrutinize it. By building a model of diabetes care in Japan that references Scandinavian human science, it will be possible to find new approaches that support learning at the existential level. Objective: To evaluate beliefs, and attitudes about health of refugees with chronic conditions such as diabetes mellitus type 2, hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and posttraumatic stress disorder and the consequent effects on self-care in comparison to resident populations. Design: A systematic review methodology was used. PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO and CINAHL databases were searched for relevant articles. The main terms analysed were health beliefs, chronic conditions and refugee populations. From 844 articles, 45 were retained for further assessment, and finally 5 met the inclusion criteria. Results: Differences in the health beliefs, attitudes and self-care management approaches of refugees compared to resident populations were identified in two studies. The remaining three papers did not make comparisons between the refugees and the resident population, nor did they specifically explore the refugees' health beliefs. Of the five studies, three were carried out in Sweden and two in the US. Refugees who have poorer mental and physical health as well as higher prevalence of chronic diseases than the populations among which they resettle seem to lack the knowledge about their illness, symptoms and self-management and thus are less able to control their chronic conditions. Conclusion: The findings highlighted the deficiency in the literature of studies which examine health beliefs and attitudes of minority groups such as refugees who have chronic conditions. The findings also gave insight to the need for a distinctive understanding of refugee health and the management of chronic conditions in comparison to other non-refugee migrant groups. Objectives: Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in type 1 diabetes (T1D) can occur during both insulin pump therapy (continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion, CSII) and insulin injection therapy (multiple daily injections, MDI). The primary aim of this study was to compare CSII and MDI regarding DKA frequency. A secondary aim was to compare metabolic derangement between CSII and MDI at hospital admission for DKA. Research Design and methods: Children 0–17.99 years with established T1D admitted for DKA in Sweden from February 1, 2015 to January 31, 2017 were invited to participate. Data regarding demographics, laboratory data, CSII or MDI, and access to ketone meters and CGM were provided through questionnaires and medical records. The Swedish National Diabetes Registry (SWEDIABKIDS) was used to compare the distribution of CSII and MDI in the national population with the population admitted for DKA, using the chi‐square goodness‐of‐fit test. Distribution of CSII and MDI was then categorized in clinical severity grades for mild (pH 7.20–7.29), moderate (pH 7.10–7.29) and severe DKA (pH <7.10). Results: The distribution of CSII at DKA admission was significantly larger than in the national pediatric population with T1D (74.7% vs. 59.7%, p = 0.002). CSII was overrepresented in mild DKA (85.2% vs. with CSII, p < 0.001), but not in moderate/severe DKA (57.9% with CSII, p = 0.82). Mean HbA1c at hospital admission was 73.9 mmol/mol with CSII and 102.7 mmol/mol with MDI. Conclusions: CSII was associated with higher risk of mild DKA than MDI. Background: Early‐onset type 1 diabetes (T1D) is associated with high risk of early cardiovascular complications and premature death. The strongest modifiable risk factor is HbA1c. Other modifiable factors, such as overweight, also increase the risk of complications. During the last decade, the introduction of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) has offered new options in the treatment of T1D. Objective: To compare treatment outcomes in children younger than 7 years with T1D in Sweden in two separate cohorts: one in 2008 and one in 2018. Methods: All children in the national pediatric diabetes registry (SWEDIABKIDS) younger than 7 years with T1D were included. Data from 2008 and 2018 were analyzed. Results: Data were available on 666 children (45% girls) in 2008 and 779 children (45% girls) in 2018. Mean age was 5.6 (1.4) versus 5.5 (1.4) years and mean diabetes duration 2.3 (1.4) versus 2.2 (1.4) years. The use of CGM increased from 0% to 98% and the use of an insulin pump from 40% in 2008 to 82% (p < 0.01)in 2018.Mean HbA1c was 58 mmol/mol (7.4%) in 2008 and 50 mmol/mol (6.7%) in 2018 (p < 0.01). The frequency of overweight and obesity was the same in 2008 and 2018(26% vs. 29%). Conclusion: During this decade, usage of CGM and insulin pump increased and HbA1c decreased. However, HbA1c remained higher than the physiological level and thus continued to represent a cardiovascular risk, especially in combination with overweight or obesity. Background: Diabetes is a serious chronic disease. Medical treatment and good psychosocial support are needed to cope with acute and long-term effects of diabetes. Self-management is a large part of diabetes management, with healthcare providers playing a supportive role. Young adults with type 1 diabetes are of special interest as they tend to have higher mean glycosylated haemoglobin values than other patients with type 1 diabetes, and they often miss visits in traditional diabetes care. A well-designed virtual solution may improve a range of measures (e.g. glycaemic control and perceived health) and reduce hospitalisations. Method: This randomised controlled trial with a control group using a wait list design will recruit 100 young adults from a hospital in Sweden. All participants will receive usual diabetes care besides the virtual clinic. The primary objective is to evaluate the effect of a virtual diabetes clinic on glycaemic control, treatment satisfaction and quality of life in young adults (aged 18–25 years) with type-1 diabetes. The secondary objective is to determine the effects of virtual care on the patient experience. Discussion: Virtual tools are becoming increasingly common in healthcare; however, it remains unclear if these tools improve diabetes self-management. The results of this study will build understanding of how healthcare providers can use a virtual clinic to improve diabetes self-management.
