The purpose of this study is to extract cellulose from corn silk (CS) fiber and use it as a reinforcing filler in unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) matrix. In this study, the cellulose is characterized using a Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR), and the resulting UPR/cellulose biocomposite's mechanical properties (such as flexural and impact testing) are assessed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) provided strong support for mechanical rather than a chemical bond between fiber and UPR. Additionally, the sodium hydroxide treated CS in UPR biocomposite and comparing it with neat UPR. The agricultural byproduct rich in cellulose corn silk is a natural polymer known for its structural strength and UPR has garnered attention as a biopolymer with notable flexibility, making it an appealing choice for plastic product manufacturing. However, the drawback of UPR lies in its inherent deficiency in both stiffness and strength. According to the FTIR data, extracted cellulose (CS) had fewer ketone (C = O) and hydroxyl (-OH) groups than virgin cellulose. It was shown that throughout the extraction process, hemicellulose and lignin were more eliminated, producing a more pure form of cellulose. When filled in UPR, cellulose and treated CS both caused the impact strength of UPR biocomposites to drop. For both treated CS and cellulose, it was shown that the flexural modulus and flexural strength increased as the filler amount increased to a definite percentage (12%) after which it decreased. The result revealed the tensile strength and tensile modulus achieved by 0% of fiber with 48 N/mm2 and 51 N/mm2 and highest at 12% of fiber with 54.3 N/mm2 and 68.8 N/mm2 for CS + UPR. And 53.4 N/mm2 and 69.6 N/mm2 for cellulose + UPR composite,, respectively. In comparison, the flexural characteristics of UPR/cellulose were marginally inferior to those of UPR/treated CS. However, the impact resistance showed a significant improvement, particularly with a cellulose loading of 12%. Hence, cellulose presents a greater potential for composite manufacturing due to its ability to maintain the ductile properties of UPR compared to treated CS. The growing awareness of socioeconomic and environmental issues and the high percentage of petroleum resources consumed and new environmental regulations have fueled efforts to develop innovative, cutting-edge, environmentally friendly materials with a wide range of applications. Due to environmental and sustainability concerns, the advancement of biocomposites has resulted in tremendous breakthroughs in green materials in this century. Their primary goal is to replace current synthetic petroleum-based composites with natural resources. Materials derived from nonrenewable petroleum-based sources are hazardous and expensive to produce; on the other hand, biocomposites derived from natural sources are biodegradable, recyclable, non-abrasive, and compostable and have properties comparable to synthetic fiber composites. Natural fibers are low-cost, lightweight, biodegradable, renewable, and environmentally friendly alternatives to synthetic fibers like glass and carbon fiber. The long-term viability of natural fiber-based composite materials has led to increased use in various production industries. However, the manufacturing process of natural fiber-based biocomposites is still plagued by some difficulties, such as poor adhesive propensity, moisture absorption, poor fire resistance, low impact strength, and low durability. This review provides a panoramic view to provide insight into different aspects of biocomposites based on natural fibers and polymers in terms of properties and applications, which will pave the way for future biocomposites research in academic and commercial contexts. Abstract: In this work, a starch-based biopolymer was reinforced with flax strands. Composite materials at different fiber content were obtained by means of high-shearing mixing followed by injection molding processing. The evaluation of the mechanical properties gave a significant increase of the strength and stiffness of composites with the percentage of flax strands. The enhancement was analyzed in terms of compatibility and extension of the adhesion at fiber–matrix interface. The intrinsic mechanical properties of the reinforcement were measured and the behavior of the obtained composites was studied in terms of the modified rule of mixtures and the modified Halpin–Tsai equations. Over recent years, enthusiasm towards the manufacturing of biopolymers has attracted considerable attention due to the rising concern about depleting resources and worsening pollution. Among the biopolymers available in the world, polylactic acid (PLA) is one of the highest biopolymers produced globally and thus, making it suitable for product commercialisation. Therefore, the effectiveness of natural fibre reinforced PLA composite as an alternative material to substitute the non-renewable petroleum-based materials has been examined by researchers. The type of fibre used in fibre/matrix adhesion is very important because it influences the biocomposites' mechanical properties. Besides that, an outline of the present circumstance of natural fibre-reinforced PLA 3D printing, as well as its functions in 4D printing for applications of stimuli-responsive polymers were also discussed. This research paper aims to present the development and conducted studies on PLA-based natural fibre bio-composites over the last decade. This work reviews recent PLA-derived bio-composite research related to PLA synthesis and biodegradation, its properties, processes, challenges and prospects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
