Herbivores affect plants via direct consumption, but also indirectly via changes in the vegetation. These indirect effects may only manifest after decades of exposure and, as a result, their impact is rarely accounted for. To better understand the direct and indirect impacts of a large herbivore, moose (Alces alces), on forests, we measured tree growth in areas that were both subjected to and excluded from herbivory for over 80 years. Growth data were gathered from five tree species, ranging from low to high palatability. We found that at small sizes, Betula papyrifera, a preferred species, benefited from herbivore exclusion. However, larger individuals grew more when exposed to herbivory, a response we attribute to lower competition in heavily browsed conditions. Populus tremuloides, a highly preferred tree, did not show any differences between levels of herbivory. Abies balsamea, a preferred winter browsed, was only marginally affected by browsing at smaller sizes. The two non-preferred species, Picea glauca and Picea mariana, did not show differential growth between herbivory levels. We conclude that herbivores can impact forests through both direct and indirect effects, that these effects are size specific, and that effects vary among species in ways not always predicted by consumption patterns. Spruce–fir (Picea–Abies) forests of the North American Acadian Forest Region are at risk of disappearing from the northeastern United States and Canada due to climate change. Species distribution models (SDMs) have been used to predict changes in this critical transitional ecosystem in the past, but none have addressed how seasonal patterns of temperature and precipitation interact to influence tree species abundance. Inferences have also been limited by contemporary inventory data that could not fully characterize species ranges because they either, (1) only sampled species occurrence after large‐scale human disturbance and settlement, or (2) did not span critical geopolitical boundaries (e.g., the US–Canadian border) that intersect the focal species' range(s). Here, we built new SDM models to better assess the bioclimatic distribution of four spruce–fir species and to test the importance of seasonal climate interactions. We compiled an extensive database of tree occurrence and abundance from recent (~1955–2012) and historical time periods (1623–1869) to model current species distributions and to predict how these might change under future climate. We found that including historical tree data in our SDMs revealed previously unrecognized suitable habitat along the southern edge of species' contemporary ranges. Random forest models predicted occurrence with high accuracy (area under receiver operator curve >0.98), and the seasonal climate variables that emerged as most important for these cold‐adapted species all included interactions that reflected sensitivity to colder temperatures, and preferences for wet weather concentrated in the winter months. Under moderate climate warming (representative concentration pathway 6.0), the northeastern United States retained additional suitable habitat when historical data were included through 2060 for three of the four species: red spruce (Picea rubens), black spruce (Picea mariana), and balsam fir (Abies balsamea), while white spruce (Picea glauca) habitat contracted into Canada. In contrast, future predictions from models that used contemporary data alone forecast extirpation for all four species from the northeastern United States. Overall, these findings highlight that prediction of species ranges in transitional ecosystems that span geopolitical boundaries and gradients of intense land use are improved when historical data and seasonal climate interactions of both temperature and precipitation variables are incorporated. Budburst is a pivotal event in plant life, representing a crucial response to seasonal meteorological shifts. Boreal tree species exhibit species-specific phenologies, and the rate of phenological changes under warming conditions may differ among these species. In this study we aim to investigate the timing of budburst in three coniferous species [Balsam fir (Abies balsamea), black spruce (Picea mariana) and white spruce (Picea glauca) (Pinaceae)]; identify the main drivers of budburst, its rate of advance and the spatiotemporal patterns of budburst in relation to climate across Canada using a time period of 1980–2021. The timing of budburst was observed at 2839 locations stretching from Alberta to Newfoundland. We developed response functions between budburst and climate (air temperature, precipitation and solar radiation) and used the strongest correlations to test their effect on budburst using species, time and the ecoclimatic framework of Canadian ecoprovinces. We applied spatially constrained multivariate clustering and identified natural budburst clustering across Canada. We found a baseline difference of 17 days in the budburst of black spruce relative to that of balsam fir and white spruce. Mean minimum temperature of May was negatively correlated with budburst date. Black spruce advanced budburst at a rate of change per degree of temperature (−3.33 days °C−1), twice that of balsam fir and white spruce (−1.53 and −1.27 days °C−1, respectively). Cluster distribution of budburst timing matched well with the distribution of Canadian ecoprovinces. Budburst within the clusters followed clinal patterns in temperature across Canada. Mean minimum temperature in May is the main factor driving budburst in northern tree species. Under a warmer spring, we project an earlier budburst, with black spruce being the species expected to show the greatest rate of change. With current trends in global warming, it has been suggested that spruce budworm outbreaks may spread to northern parts of the boreal forest. However, the major constraints for a northward expansion are the availability of suitable host trees and the insect winter survival capacity. This study aimed to determine the effect of larval feeding on balsam fir, white spruce and black spruce on various spruce budworm life history traits of both the parental and the progeny generations. Results indicated that the weight of the overwintering larval progeny and their winter survival were influenced by host tree species on which larvae of the parental generation fed. White spruce was the most suitable host for the spruce budworm, producing the heaviest pupae and the heaviest overwintering larvae while black spruce was the least suitable, producing the smallest pupae and the smallest overwintering progeny. Overwintering larvae produced by parents that fed on black spruce also suffered higher winter mortality than individuals coming from parents that fed on balsam fir or white spruce. With current trends in global warming, spruce budworm is expected to expand its range to northern boreal forests where black spruce is the dominant tree species. Abstract Large-scale aerial spray operations against the spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana (Clemens)) (SBW) with the biological insecticide Bacillus thuringiensis ssp. kurstaki (Btk) aim at maintaining trees alive during outbreaks. This objective is thought to be achieved when ≥ 50% of current-year foliage is preserved until the end of the outbreak. This protection target is associated with low balsam fir (Abies balsamea [L.] Mill.) mortality. However, it is unknown whether this approach is always needed or whether less frequent interventions could provide similar results at a lower cost. Between 2010 and 2016, we conducted field experiments in Quebec's Côte-Nord region to determine the efficacy of five different Btk spraying scenarios for protecting balsam fir, white spruce (Picea glauca [Moench] Voss) and black spruce (P. mariana [Mill.] BSP) in mixed stands. We used the residual photosynthetic capacity (RPC) to evaluate the efficacy of the five scenarios. RPC makes it possible to take into account the impact of SBW defoliation on foliage contribution to tree photosynthetic effort over several years, and can be used as a proxy of the risk of tree mortality. We hypothesized that less frequent Btk applications could maintain the required RPC level to keep trees alive. Our results show that areas not protected resulted in great losses of RPC in balsam fir and white spruce. Btk applications every 3 years kept RPC above 50% for 2 years in balsam fir and 4 years in white spruce. RPC losses were above 62% after 4 years in both species. The strategy currently employed in Quebec (spraying every year after a first year of moderate-severe defoliation) and the intensive protection scenario (Btk applications every year) meet the protection goals for these hosts. However, their cost prevents their application at a large scale. Btk applications every 2 years seems a relevant alternative to the current strategy to protect balsam fir and white spruce stands given the adequate level of protection provided (RPC above 39%) and the reduction in the number of Btk applications required (36% fewer applications over 7 years, resulting in 36% lower cost), particularly if the objective is to maintain trees alive. Black spruce maintained at least 54% of its RPC, even without protection. Btk applications every 3 years might be a valid alternative to reduce growth losses in black spruce-dominated stands. Spruce budworm (SBW; Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.)) defoliation can cause severe growth reduction and mortality to spruce-fir ( Picea-Abies ) species in eastern North America. Consequently, it is important to understand and predict how individual trees respond to defoliation in terms of growth and mortality. To address this, species- and region-specific individual-tree models quantifying the effects of cumulative defoliation on annualized diameter and height increment, crown recession, and mortality were developed using data from an extensive network of 424 and 136 permanent sample plots in Maine, USA and New Brunswick, Canada, respectively, during the last SBW outbreak of 1970–1990s. In general, these models fit well with relatively small bias despite large variation observed in the data. The effects of SBW defoliation on diameter increment, crown recession, and mortality were highly significant but relatively moderate depending on species, possibly because overall mean defoliation was rather moderate. Reduction in diameter increment and increase in mortality were always more significant for balsam fir ( Abies balsamea L.) than for the spruce species. However, diameter increment returned to higher rates irrespective of species in New Brunswick, where the data were collected towards the end of the SBW outbreak. Efficacy of commercial formulations of Bacillus thuringiensis ssp. kurstaki ( Btk) against spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana in black spruce ( Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP), white spruce ( P. glauca (Moench) Voss) and balsam fir ( Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) was investigated in Québec's Côte-Nord region. As expected, larval mortality was higher in Btk-treated plots (80.26 ± 2.34 %) than in control plots (66.32 ± 2.80 %). There were no differences in larval mortality among the three host tree species tested. Btk was most efficient in reducing spruce budworm defoliation when applied to black spruce and white spruce trees. Black spruce and white spruce exhibited lower final defoliation in Btk-treated plots than balsam fir. Btk applications produced a reduction in defoliation of 36 % in balsam fir, 44 % in white spruce and 41 % in black spruce. Control plots exhibited about 35 % higher amount of current-year foliage destroyed (AFD) and 56 % lower amount of current-year foliage remaining (ARF) than Btk-treated plots, whereas no differences in the amount of current-year foliage produced (AFP) were observed among host tree species. Black spruce trees showed the lowest AFD. Although not statistically significant, black spruce also showed the highest ARF. Our results suggest that Btk application is more efficient in protecting against spruce budworm damage when it is applied to spruce species than it is to balsam fir. It appears that the observed inter-specific differences in host tree foliage protection might be related to interactions between Btk, host tree foliage, and larval feeding behaviour. Ongoing climate change is likely to result in shifts in successional dynamics in boreal mixedwood stands. Using data from provincial forest inventory databases, we examined the occurrence and abundance of the regeneration of various coniferous species (white spruce, black spruce and balsam fir) along an east-west Canadian gradient in aspen-dominated stands. The interpretation of the results was based on environmental conditions, including climate, natural fire regime and human impacts. We found that conifer regeneration was present in aspen stands along the entire gradient, despite differences in climatic conditions and fire regimes between the west (warmer and drier, with large recurrent fires) and east (more humid with relatively long fire cycles). However, abundance and distribution varied from one conifer species to the next. The abundance of white spruce decreased towards the eastern end of the longitudinal gradient, while balsam fir and black spruce abundance decreased towards the west. Although abundance decreased, balsam fir and black spruce regeneration was still present in western Canada. This study shows that it is difficult to interpret the effects of climate change on conifer recruitment without accounting for the superimposed effects of human activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Leaf life span is an important plant trait associated with interspecific variation in leaf, organismal, and ecosystem processes. We hypothesized that intraspecific variation in gymnosperm needle traits with latitude reflects both selection and acclimation for traits adaptive to the associated temperature and moisture gradient. This hypothesis was supported, because across 127 sites along a 2,160-km gradient in North America individuals of Picea glauca Picea mariana, Pinus banksiana, and Abies balsamea had longer needle life span and lower tissue nitrogen concentration with decreasing mean annual temperature. Similar patterns were noted for Pinus syivestris across a north-south gradient in Europe. These differences highlight needle longevity as an adaptive feature important to ecological success of boreal conifers across broad climatic ranges. Additionally, differences in leaf life span directly affect annual foliage turnover rate, which along with needle physiology partially regulates carbon cycling through effects on gross primary production and net canopy carbon export. However, most, if not all, global land surface models parameterize needle longevity of boreal evergreen forests as if it were a constant. We incorporated temperature-dependent needle longevity and %nitrogen, and bio-mass allocation, into a land surface model. Community Atmosphere Biosphere Land Exchange, to assess their impacts on carbon cycling processes. Incorporating realistic parameterization of these variables improved predictions of canopy leaf area index and gross primary production compared with observations from flux sites. Finally, increasingly low foliage turnover and biomass fraction toward the cold far north indicate that a surprisingly small fraction of new biomass is allocated to foliage under such conditions. In many situations, information on stem diameters inside bark (dib) are more desirable than on diameters outside bark (dob). However, obtaining dib measurements is usually expensive, time-consuming, and prone to significant measurement errors when done on standing trees. Many bark thickness equations have been proposed to estimate the dibs of standing trees. In this study, we compared several commonly used bark thickness equations for seven conifer species in the Acadian Region of North America. Mixed-effects modeling techniques were employed to fit linear and non-linear bark thickness equations. We found the equation proposed by Cao and Pepper (South J Appl Forestry 10:220-224, 1986; Eq. 5) performed significantly better than other equations for most of our study species. The Cao and Pepper (South J Appl Forestry 10:220-224, ) equation is a function of dob, relative height in the stem, tree height, and the ratio of dib to dob at breast height. The mean absolute bias was found to be reduced up to 74% compared with using a fixed ratio approach employed in the widely used Northeastern variant of the Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS-NE) growth and yield model. Leave-one-out cross validation was further performed to determine the location of suitable prior measurements in the prediction process for three of the most well-behaved equations. Results show that no unified prior measurement can provide best predictive abilities across all species as the choice of prior dib measurements depends on both species and bark thickness equations. Abstract: Despite their suitability for dendroclimatological research, the boreal regions of central and western Labrador remain under-researched. In an attempt to evaluate the growth trends and climatic response of this region''s trees, master chronologies have been developed for its four dominant conifer species. Balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.), white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss), black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) Britton, Sterns, Poggenb.) and eastern larch (Larix laricina (DuRoi) K. Koch) were sampled systematically within a 3×4 grid of twelve sites at the intersection of 62°W, 64°W and 66°W longitude, and latitudes 52°N, 53°N, 54°N and 55°N. The two most dominant species at each site were sampled, yielding a total of twenty-four master chronologies, all of which reflected a highly significant common signal at each site. The chronologies were subjected to a response function analysis to determine the nature of the growth–climate relationships in the region. Summer temperature proved to be the predominant limiting factor with regard to radial growth at most sites. The onset of the optimum temperature regime, however, varies across the network of sites, revealing evidence of a gradient of continentality in the data. Growth–temperature correlations indicated a significant relationship with July temperature at most eastern sites, while western sites tended to correlate with May, June and August temperatures. Central sites tended to correlate with June–July temperatures. We interpret these results as demonstrating the bioclimatic gradient of change between coastally proximal, maritime-influenced sites and inland, continentally influenced locales. Mineral soils exposed by fire are often covered by a layer of ash due to complete consumption of the forest floor (litter and duff). To assess the possible effects of ash on seed germination and viability of jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.), black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) Britton, Sterns, Poggenb.), white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss), and balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.), a laboratory experiment was conducted using ash derived from three types of forest floor samples. The samples represented areas of high conifer concentration, high aspen concentration, and mixed aspen and conifer and were collected from five mature aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) – conifer mixedwood stands in southeastern Manitoba. Ash derived from each forest floor type neither prohibited nor delayed conifer germination, except that of balsam fir. Balsam fir had significantly less germination on ash derived from forest floor samples with high aspen concentration. When corrected for seed viability, balsam fir had significantly less germination on all three ash types compared with jack pine, black spruce, and white spruce. However, the impact of ash on balsam fir is unlikely to have meaningful ecological implications, as balsam fir is a climax species and will establish in undisturbed mature forests. La cendre provenant de chacun des types de couverture morte n’a ni inhibé ni retardé la germination des conifères à l’exception du sapin baumier. Abstract: Stem form is often used as a sawlog assortment criterion and has an important effect on lumber recovery and mechanical properties. Based on 7018 stems collected from the natural stands in 3 regions in eastern Canada, this study quantified the variations in stem form (taper, sweep and eccentricity) for five major commercial softwood species, viz., jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.), black spruce (Picea mariana), white spruce (Picea glauca), red spruce (Picea rubens) and balsam fir (Abies balsamea). The majority of the stems had a diameter at breast height (DBH) ranging from 10 to 32cm and total tree height from 10 to 20m. Stem taper and butt taper increased steadily from 0.38 to 1.75cm/m and from 0.74 to 4.23cm/m, respectively, with DBH increasing from 8 to 48cm. Stem sweep and basal sweep ranged from 0.12 to 7.28cm/m and from 0.12 to 9.85cm/m, respectively, with mean values of 0.87 and 0.95cm/m. There were no significant differences in stem sweep and basal sweep between DBH classes and both sweeps distributed over a wide range within DBH classes, species and regions. About 0.77% of the stems and 1.2% of the butt logs had seriously curved shapes (sweep >3.0cm/m). Eccentricity (ratio of smaller diameter to larger diameter) at the breast height (0.96) was very close to 1. Balsam fir and jack pine had the best and worst stem forms, respectively, while stem forms in black spruce were in-between. Butt logs were most seriously curved in red spruce and most tapered in white spruce. Region C (mainly eastern Quebec and the Atlantic Provinces) produced stems with smaller butt taper, basal sweep and stem sweep and larger eccentricity compared with other regions in eastern Canada. Overall stems in eastern Canada have a good stem form in terms of taper, sweep and eccentricity. The evaluation of stem form provides valuable timber quality information for the wood industry to optimize wood processing as well as for forest managers to define appropriate silvicultural regimes to improve stem form and economic value. Thirty-five stands of mature, closed canopy black spruce (Picea mariana), white spruce (Picea glauca) and balsam fir (Abies balsamea) in Prince Albert National Park, Saskatchewan, were assessed for cumulative defoliation caused by eastern spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana). Multitemporal Landsat 5 TM images (15 June 1992 and 18 July 2004) and a single-date SPOT 4 HRVIR (high resolution visible and infrared) image (19 August 2004) were obtained over these stands. Correlation analysis suggested that the strength of the relationship between the defoliation and various vegetation indices was generally moderate. The SPOT HRVIR indices were more highly correlated to cumulative defoliation than the Landsat indices, and the multitemporal Landsat TM index outperformed the single-date Landsat TM index. The reproductive potentials of balsam fir and white spruce (co-dominants in mixedwood forests) and black spruce (dominant in coniferous forests) were studied to explain the location of the ecotone between the two forest types in the boreal zone of Quebec. Four sites were selected along a latitudinal gradient crossing the ecotone. Cone crop, number of seeds per cone, percentage filled seeds, and percentage germination were measured for each species. Balsam fir and white spruce cone crops were significantly lower in the coniferous than in the mixedwood forest, while black spruce had greater crop constancy and regularity between both forest types. Mast years were more frequent for black spruce than for balsam fir in both forest types (mast year data not available for white spruce). The number of seeds per cone was more related to cone size than to forest type for all species. Black spruce produced more filled seeds in the coniferous forest than balsam fir or white spruce. The sum of growing degree-days and the maximum temperature of the warmest month (both for the year prior to cone production) significantly affected balsam fir cone production. The climate-related northward decrease in reproductive potential of balsam fir and white spruce could partly explain the position of the northern limit of the mixedwood forest. Reports on a study to relate aboveground decay and stain to that occurring in the roots and lower stump of white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss), black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP), and balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) from stands in northern Ontario. Correlation of decay and stain caused by Inonotus tomentosus (Fr.) Teng., Scytinostroma galactinum Fr. Donk, Coniophora puteana (Schum. Fr.) Karst., and all fungi combined with decay and stain in the roots and belowground portion of the stump in living trees; Equations for estimating root decay and stain by the above fungi and all fungi together, in the major roots and lower stump, in each of white spruce, black spruce, and balsam fir; Inclusion of oil texture, soil moisture regime, and percentage of potential crop trees dead standing or windfallen in the stand.

Prior to the Mount Allison Dendrochronology (MAD Lab) sampling in the summer of 2007, little tree ring work was conducted in Labrador, with the most studies coming from the eastern coast and from one species. Given this, the information is still quite spotty, as the cost of transportation and limited tree availability has limited a systematic sampling across the landscape. Over this backdrop, the MAD Lab initiated a more region-wide study breaking Labrador into three zones (east, west, and north). Within each zone a consistent grid was used that will link the entire region together, while at the same time highlight the major zones of homogenous tree cover currently found. This talk will illustrate some of the early results of areas in southeastern Labrador, while at the same time discuss some of the difficulties in sampling the more northern locations. Three species will be discussed (white spruce (Picea glauca), black spruce (Picea mariana) and balsam fir (Abies balsamea)). Preliminary results from chronologies of black spruce and balsam fir developed from the southeastern region will be compared to the other chronologies in adjacent areas in Labrador, highlighting some of the similarities and differences in growing conditions that are already being seen. In 1989, the first recorded outbreak of hemlock looper (Lambdina fiscellaria fiscellaria (Guen.)) occurred in New Brunswick, Canada. Datawere collected from ten plots established in an area infested from 1992-1994, to assess impacts of hemlock looper. Ocular and branch sample assessments of current defoliation and ocular assessments of totaldefoliation (all age classes of foliage) were conducted for balsam fir (Abies balsamea [L.] Mill.), white spruce (Picea glauca [Moench] Voss), and black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.). Stand responsewas assessed and related to cumulative defoliation. Ocular assessments were found to accurately estimate defoliation, which was significantly related to tree mortality. Ninety-two percent of balsam fir trees that had cumulative defoliation >90% died. Mortality of balsam fir was significantly (p<0.05) related to tree size, in both lightly and severely defoliated plots; trees with DBH <11cm sustained 22-48% higher mortality than larger trees. Mortality of balsam fir, in terms of both percent stems/ha and m3/ha merchantable volume, increased exponentially in relation to three estimates of cumulative (summed) plot mean defoliation. The strongest relationships (r2=0.75-0.79) were between mortality and the ocular defoliation assessment for 1990-1993 foliage. Tree mortality caused by the looper outbreak ranged from 4-14% stems/ha in lightly defoliated and from 32-100% in severely defoliated plots; merchantable volume killed was 3-14m3/ha and 51-119m3/ha, respectively. Relationships between mortality and defoliation were similar when defoliation was assessed for 1987-1993 and 1990-1993 foliage age classes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
