Forecasting has extreme importance in industry due to the numerous competitive advantages that it provides, allowing to foresee what might happen and adjust management decisions accordingly. Industries increasingly use sensors, which allow for large-scale data collection. Big datasets enable training, testing and application of complex predictive algorithms based on machine learning models. The present paper focuses on predicting values from sensors installed on a pulp paper press, using data collected over three years. The variables analyzed are electric current, pressure, temperature, torque, oil level and velocity. The results of XGBoost and artificial neural networks, with different feature vectors, are compared. Machine learning (ML), a form of artificial intelligence (AI), is being increasingly employed in neurology. Reported performance metrics often match or exceed the efficiency of average clinicians. The neurologist is easily baffled by the underlying concepts and terminologies associated with ML studies. The superlative performance metrics of ML algorithms often hide the opaque nature of its inner workings. Questions regarding ML model's interpretability and reproducibility of its results in real-world scenarios, need emphasis. Given an abundance of time and information, the expert clinician should be able to deliver comparable predictions to ML models, a useful benchmark while evaluating its performance. Predictive performance metrics of ML models should not be confused with causal inference between its input and output. ML and clinical gestalt should compete in a randomized controlled trial before they can complement each other for screening, triaging, providing second opinions and modifying treatment. De-mining operations are of critical importance for humanitarian efforts and safety in conflict-affected regions. In this paper, we address the challenge of enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of mine detection systems. We present an innovative Deep Learning architecture tailored for pulse induction-based Metallic Mine Detectors (MMD), so called DL-MMD. Our methodology leverages deep neural networks to distinguish amongst nine distinct materials with an exceptional validation accuracy of 93.5%. This high level of precision enables us not only to differentiate between anti-personnel mines, without metal plates but also to detect minuscule 0.2-g vertical paper pins in both mineralized soil and non-mineralized environments. Moreover, through comparative analysis, we demonstrate a substantial 3% and 7% improvement (approx.) in accuracy performance compared to the traditional K-Nearest Neighbors and Support Vector Machine classifiers, respectively. The fusion of deep neural networks with the pulse induction-based MMD not only presents a cost-effective solution but also significantly expedites decision-making processes in de-mining operations, ultimately contributing to improved safety and effectiveness in these critical endeavors. Introduction: Many studies show that words learned early in life are read more easily than the ones learned later and are less vulnerable to brain damage. Methods: the first part of the current study, 25 primary school students in the 5th grade read the word groups learned initially during a previous grade. The words used in the experiments were 327 Farsi monosyllable words matched on the other factors involved in Farsi word naming. Results: The analysis of covariance (the consistency and frequency as covariates) showed that words learned in earlier grades were read more easily than the ones learned later, showing the known effect of the Age of Acquisition (AoA). In the second part of the study, it was tried to simulate AoA in word naming by a neural network model developed earlier based on connectionist approach. While previous studies used random patterns, in the current study words from primary school books were used. Likewise, words learned early by the model were read better than words learned later. However, there was a failure in replicating previous simulation of AoA in English reading by an algorithm called Quick prop for Farsi. In addition, the model was lesioned by removing some hidden units to see its effect on word reading. As a result, words learned earlier were less vulnerable to damage compared with the ones learned later. Conclusion: The findings showed that words learned earlier, compared to those learned later, were read better and were less vulnerable to damage. Papermaking is an industrial process that is becoming more competitive nowadays. In this process there are numerous techniques and measurements to indicate paper quality. To increase competitiveness a good control of paper quality is needed through paper properties predictions from different process measurements. However, complex physico-chemical processes take place during papermaking, and thus, paper property predictions are not easy to obtain, especially in the wet-end area. In the wet end flocculation takes place, which will determine the floc properties during the formation of the sheet, and therefore, it will influence retention, drainage and formation. These strongly affect the runnability of the machine and the properties of the final product, and thus, using wet-end measurements for the predictions implies advanced data treatment. Artificial neural networks have been used in this article to predict newsprint paper properties from wet-end parameters. This paper presents a study of the impact of two important parameters, moisture and aging of the oil/paper dielectric used as insulation in power transformers.The way in which these two parameters influence different parameters of the Frequency Domain Spectroscopy (FDS) measurements, is emphasized.Different FDS parameters were measured by varying the moisturecontent and the aging degree of the oil impregnated paper.The use of two types of neural networks for analysis of the results was necessary in order to help discriminating the impact of moisture and aging on the FDS measurements and, in some cases, to estimate the aging duration of the paper impregnated with oil. This research paper aims to ensure the reliable and efficient operation of grid-connected solid-state transformers (SSTs) by detecting and evaluating various undesirable operating conditions. The study considers different types of faults, including internal faults like open switches and open capacitors, external faults such as symmetrical and asymmetrical faults occurring at various locations of the SST, and abnormalities on the grid side known as sympathetic inrush conditions. To analyze these operating conditions, the secondary current of the high-frequency transformer is normalized and decomposed using the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and wavelet packet transform (WPT). From the DWT and WPT decomposition at multiple levels, several statistical parameters are calculated. These statistical parameters are carefully selected from different decomposition levels to enhance the effectiveness of the detection algorithm utilizing DWT and WPT. In order to quickly identify and classify all operating conditions that impact the performance of the grid-connected SST, a three-layer feedforward artificial neural network (ANN) is employed, using the selected statistical features. The accuracy and efficiency of the ANN-based classification approach are evaluated by assessing the effectiveness of the statistical features obtained from DWT and WPT. Simulation results have been altered by introducing various noise levels to systematically assess the performance of the proposed algorithms. The average accuracy of the DWT-ANN algorithm stands at 97.89%, while the WPT-ANN algorithm achieves a slightly elevated accuracy level of 98.01%. This paper presents the results of a study on data preprocessing and modeling for predicting corrosion in water pipelines of a steel industrial plant. The use case is a cooling circuit consisting of both direct and indirect cooling. In the direct cooling circuit, water comes into direct contact with the product, whereas in the indirect one, it does not. In this study, advanced machine learning techniques, such as extreme gradient boosting and deep neural networks, have been employed for two distinct applications. Firstly, a virtual sensor was created to estimate the corrosion rate based on influencing process variables, such as pH and temperature. Secondly, a predictive tool was designed to foresee the future evolution of the corrosion rate, considering past values of both influencing variables and the corrosion rate. The results show that the most suitable algorithm for the virtual sensor approach is the dense neural network, with MAPE values of (25 ± 4)% and (11 ± 4)% for the direct and indirect circuits, respectively. In contrast, different results are obtained for the two circuits when following the predictive tool approach. For the primary circuit, the convolutional neural network yields the best results, with MAPE = 4% on the testing set, whereas for the secondary circuit, the LSTM recurrent network shows the highest prediction accuracy, with MAPE = 9%. Demand response management (DRM) plays a crucial role in the prospective development of smart grids. The precise estimation of electricity demand for individual houses is vital for optimizing the operation and planning of the power system. Accurate forecasting of the required components holds significance as it can substantially impact the final cost, mitigate risks, and support informed decision-making. In this paper, a forecasting approach employing neural networks for smart grid demand-side management is proposed. The study explores various enhanced artificial neural network (ANN) architectures for forecasting smart grid consumption. The performance of the ANN approach in predicting energy demands is evaluated through a comparison with three statistical models: a time series model, an auto-regressive model, and a hybrid model. The paper studies the effectiveness of machine learning techniques in predicting the microhardness of composite materials manufactured from a mixture of iron-copper (Fe-Cu) nanopowders and hydroxyapatite (HA) particles. It is shown that the different proportion of Fe-Cu and HA powders and the polymer fraction in the composite significantly affect its hardness. A surrogate model based on the artificial neural network (ANN) and the analytical model, is proposed to quantitatively evaluate the microhardness, depending on the powder/polymer ratio. The ANN models show the probability distribution of indentation values after microhardness testing, which is the input data for the analytical model to compute the hardness. Nowadays, trajectory control is a significant issue for unmanned micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) due to large disturbances such as wind and storms. Trajectory control is typically implemented using a proportional–integral–derivative (PID) controller. In order to achieve high accuracy in trajectory tracking, it is essential to set the PID gain parameters to optimum values. For this reason, separate gain values are set for roll, pitch and yaw movements before autonomous flight in quadrotor systems. Traditionally, this adjustment is performed manually or automatically in autotune mode. Given the constraints of narrow orchard corridors, the use of manual or autotune mode is neither practical nor effective, as the quadrotor system has to fly in narrow apple orchard corridors covered with hail nets. These reasons require the development of an innovative solution specific to quadrotor vehicles designed for constrained areas such as apple orchards. This paper recognizes the need for effective trajectory control in quadrotors and proposes a novel neural network-based approach to tuning the optimal PID control parameters. This new approach not only improves trajectory control efficiency but also addresses the unique challenges posed by environments with constrained locational characteristics. Flight simulations using the proposed neural network models have demonstrated successful trajectory tracking performance and highlighted the superiority of the feed-forward back propagation network (FFBPN), especially in latitude tracking within 7.52745 × 10−5 RMSE trajectory error. Given the peculiarly linguistic approach that contemporary philosophers use to apply St. Thomas Aquinas's arguments on the immateriality of the human soul, this paper will present a Thomistic-inspired evaluation of whether artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) chatbots' composition and linguistic performance justify the assertion that AI/ML chatbots have immaterial souls. The first section of the paper will present a strong, but ultimately crucially flawed argument that AI/ML chatbots do have souls based on contemporary Thomistic argumentation. The second section of the paper will provide an overview of the actual computer science models that make artificial neural networks and AI/ML chatbots function, which I hope will assist other theologians and philosophers writing about technology, The third section will present some of Emily Bender's and Alexander Koller's objections to AI/ML chatbots being able to access meaning from computational linguistics. The final section will highlight the similarities of Bender's and Koller's argument to a fuller presentation of St. Thomas Aquinas's argument for the immateriality of the human soul, ultimately arguing that the current mechanisms and linguistic activity of AI/ML programming do not constitute activity sufficient to conclude that they have immaterial souls on the strength of St. Thomas's arguments. Operational load monitoring (OLM) is an industrial process related to structural health monitoring, where fatigue of the structure is tracked. Artificial intelligence methods, such as artificial neural networks (ANNs) or Gaussian processes, are utilized to improve efficiency of such processes. This paper focuses on moving such processes towards green computing by deploying and executing the algorithm on low-power consumption FPGA where high-throughput and truly parallel computations can be performed. In the following paper, the OLM process of typical aerostructure (hat-stiffened composite panel) is performed using ANN. The ANN was trained using numerically generated data, of every possible load case, to be working with sensor measurements as inputs. The trained ANN was deployed to Xilinx Artix-7 A100T FPGA of a real-time microcontroller. By executing the ANN on FPGA (where every neuron of a given layer can be processed at the same time, without limiting the number of parallel threads), computation time could be reduced by 70% as compared to standard CPU execution. Series of real-time experiments were performed that have proven the efficiency and high accuracy of the developed FPGA-based algorithm. Adjusting the ANN algorithm to FPGA requirements takes some effort, however it can lead to high performance increase. FPGA has the advantages of many more potential parallel threads than a standard CPU and much lower consumption than a GPU. In industrial applications, three-phase induction motors (IMs) are widely used, and they are subjected to many types of faults. One such fault is the loss of a motor phase caused by a blown fuse, a broken wire, mechanical damage, etc. When this fault occurs during motor operation, it continues to rotate but experiences rapid heating, which can ultimately lead to motor failure. Therefore, various protection devices are available to protect the motor against this fault, but most traditional protection devices do not offer a comprehensive classification of such a fault. So, in this paper, an efficient neural network model is presented for detecting and classifying 12 types of phase loss faults for a three-phase induction motor (IM) based on factors such as the unhealthy phase, fault location, and motor action modes (standstill, transient, and steady-state modes). Thus, the main goal of this work is to determine the motor mode during the fault, the defective phase, and its location to help the maintenance team repair the fault quickly. The system is simulated and tested using the "MATLAB/Simulink" software, employing a feed-forward neural network. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed network achieves correct detection and classification of phase loss faults within a short time frame from the occurrence of the fault. Therefore, the proposed network model proves to be a simple and reliable solution for integration into the protection system of a three-phase IM, enabling the detection and classification of various phase loss faults. This paper proposes a methodology for the diagnosis of electrical system conditions using fractional-order integral transforms for feature extraction. This work proposes three feature extraction algorithms using the Fractional Fourier Transform (FRFT), the Fourier Transform combined with the Mittag-Leffler function, and the Wavelet Transform (WT). Each algorithm extracts data from an electrical system to obtain a set of features that are classified by an Artificial Neural Network to determine the system's condition. The algorithms are utilized in diagnosing two types of electrical machine faults, one in a photovoltaic system, and another in classifying the power quality disturbances (PQDs). An optimization algorithm is suggested to find the optimal orders of integral transforms. The paper examines the implementation of neural network methods for predicting peak water levels during the period of spring ice drift by the example of the Sukhona, Northern Dvina, and Pechora rivers. All considered neural network methods have shown high efficiency according to the criteria recommended by the Hydrometcenter of Russia and surpassed regression dependencies in the skill of forecasts. During the development of the nervous system, neuronal cells extend axons and dendrites that form complex neuronal networks, which are essential for transmitting and processing information. Understanding the physical processes that underlie the formation of neuronal networks is essential for gaining a deeper insight into higher-order brain functions such as sensory processing, learning, and memory. In the process of creating networks, axons travel towards other recipient neurons, directed by a combination of internal and external cues that include genetic instructions, biochemical signals, as well as external mechanical and geometrical stimuli. Although there have been significant recent advances, the basic principles governing axonal growth, collective dynamics, and the development of neuronal networks remain poorly understood. In this paper, we present a detailed analysis of nonlinear dynamics for axonal growth on surfaces with periodic geometrical patterns. We show that axonal growth on these surfaces is described by nonlinear Langevin equations with speed-dependent deterministic terms and gaussian stochastic noise. This theoretical model yields a comprehensive description of axonal growth at both intermediate and long time scales (tens of hours after cell plating), and predicts key dynamical parameters, such as speed and angular correlation functions, axonal mean squared lengths, and diffusion (cell motility) coefficients. We use this model to perform simulations of axonal trajectories on the growth surfaces, in turn demonstrating very good agreement between simulated growth and the experimental results. These results provide important insights into the current understanding of the dynamical behavior of neurons, the self-wiring of the nervous system, as well as for designing innovative biomimetic neural network models. Simple Summary: Due to various causes, such as the thinning of the ozone layer, climate change, or the fashion for artificial tanning, the incidence of skin cancer has increased recently. Early detection of cancerous skin lesions is the only chance to prevent dangerous developments. This paper proposes two models of support systems for the detection of some skin lesions including dangerous melanoma, based on two different methods of assembling neural networks and making global decisions by fusing individual decisions. The system based on the fusion of some intermediate binary classification subsystems is a new solution and offers an accuracy of 91.04%, better than that offered by the classic system based on the vote with multiple weights of the constituent networks. In addition, it is found that the individual performance indicators depend on the type of skin lesion. For example, the F1 score varied from 81.36% to 94.17%. Today, skin cancer, and especially melanoma, is an increasing and dangerous health disease. The high mortality rate of some types of skin cancers needs to be detected in the early stages and treated urgently. The use of neural network ensembles for the detection of objects of interest in images has gained more and more interest due to the increased performance of the results. In this sense, this paper proposes two ensembles of neural networks, based on the fusion of the decisions of the component neural networks for the detection of four skin lesions (basal cancer cell, melanoma, benign keratosis, and melanocytic nevi). The first system is based on separate learning of three neural networks (MobileNet V2, DenseNet 169, and EfficientNet B2), with multiple weights for the four classes of lesions and weighted overall prediction. The second system is made up of six binary models (one for each pair of classes) for each network; the fusion and prediction are conducted by weighted summation per class and per model. In total, 18 such binary models will be considered. The 91.04% global accuracy of this set of binary models is superior to the first system (89.62%). Separately, only for the binary classifications within the system was the individual accuracy better. The individual F1 score for each class and the global system varied from 81.36% to 94.17%. A fuel cell is an energy conversion device that utilizes hydrogen energy through an electrochemical reaction. Despite their many advantages, such as high efficiency, zero emissions, and fast startup, fuel cells have not yet been fully commercialized due to deficiencies in service life, cost, and performance. Efficient evaluation methods for performance and service life are critical for the design and optimization of fuel cells. The purpose of this paper was to review the application of common machine learning algorithms in fuel cells. The significance and status of machine learning applications in fuel cells are briefly described. Common machine learning algorithms, such as artificial neural networks, support vector machines, and random forests are introduced, and their applications in fuel cell performance prediction and optimization are comprehensively elaborated. The review revealed that machine learning algorithms can be successfully used for performance prediction, service life prediction, and fault diagnosis in fuel cells, with good accuracy in solving nonlinear problems. Combined with optimization algorithms, machine learning models can further carry out the optimization of design and operating parameters to achieve multiple optimization goals with good accuracy and efficiency. It is expected that this review paper could help the reader comprehend the state of the art of machine learning applications in fuel fuels and shed light on further development directions in fuel cell research. Short-term load forecasting (STLF) is critical for the energy industry. Accurate predictions of future electricity demand are necessary to ensure power systems' reliable and efficient operation. Various STLF models have been proposed in recent years, each with strengths and weaknesses. This paper comprehensively reviews some STLF models, including time series, artificial neural networks (ANNs), regression-based, and hybrid models. It first introduces the fundamental concepts and challenges of STLF, then discusses each model class's main features and assumptions. The paper compares the models in terms of their accuracy, robustness, computational efficiency, scalability, and adaptability and identifies each approach's advantages and limitations. Although this study suggests that ANNs and hybrid models may be the most promising ways to achieve accurate and reliable STLF, additional research is required to handle multiple input features, manage massive data sets, and adjust to shifting energy conditions. Natural streamflow data is required in many hydrological applications. However, many basins are located in data-scarce regions or are impacted by human construction and activities. In this paper, we explore three machine learning algorithms, namely artificial neural networks, random forest and light gradient boosting machine, to simultaneously estimate all the parameters of the coupled modèle du Génie Rural à 4 paramètres Journaliers (GR4J) and snow accounting routine called CemaNeige model. A database of 675 basins in the USA and Quebec is used to train and test ensembles. After using the estimated parameters in GR4J, the resulting naturalized streamflow series are compared with those obtained by the established drainage area ratio and spatial proximity transfer methods in 11 test basins. The results indicate that the machine learning algorithms outperform the drainage area ratio and spatial proximity transfer methods. Among machine learning algorithms, random forests obtain lower (better) continuous ranked probability scores than the other methods for 10 out of 11 test basins. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using deep neural networks to solve partial differential equations (PDEs) has attracted a lot of attention recently. However, why the deep learning method works is falling far behind its empirical success. In this paper, we provide a rigorous numerical analysis on the deep Ritz method (DRM) for second-order elliptic equations with Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin boundary conditions, respectively. We establish the first nonasymptotic convergence rate in H 1 norm for DRM using deep neural networks with smooth activation functions including logistic and hyperbolic tangent functions. Our results show how to set the hyper-parameter of depth and width to achieve the desired convergence rate in terms of the number of training samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents an approach to estimate demand in the Polish Power System (PPS) using the historical electricity usage of 27 thousand commercial customers, observed between 2016 and 2020. The customer data were clustered and samples as well as features were created to build neural network models. The goal of this research is to analyze if the clustering of customers can help to explain demand in the PPS. Additionally, considering that the datasets available for commercial customers are typically much smaller, it was analyzed what a minimal sample size drawn from the clusters would have to be in order to accurately estimate demand in the PPS. The evaluation and experiments were conducted for each year separately; the results proved that, considering adjusted R2 and mean absolute percentage error, our clustering-based method can deliver a high accuracy in the load estimation. In this paper, we present neural networks learning mechanical systems that are both symplectic (for instance particle mechanics) and non-symplectic (for instance rotating rigid body). Mechanical systems have Hamiltonian evolution, which consists of two building blocks: a Poisson bracket and an energy functional. We feed a set of snapshots of a Hamiltonian system to our neural network models which then find both the two building blocks. In particular, the models distinguish between symplectic systems (with non-degenerate Poisson brackets) and non-symplectic systems (degenerate brackets). In contrast with earlier works, our approach does not assume any further a priori information about the dynamics except its Hamiltonianity, and it returns Poisson brackets that satisfy Jacobi identity. Deep learning is a powerful machine learning technique that can learn from large amounts of data using multiple layers of artificial neural networks. This paper reviews some applications of deep learning in bioinformatics, a field that deals with analyzing and interpreting biological data. We first introduce the basic concepts of deep learning and then survey the recent advances and challenges of applying deep learning to various bioinformatics problems, such as genome sequencing, gene expression analysis, protein structure prediction, drug discovery, and disease diagnosis. We also discuss future directions and opportunities for deep learning in bioinformatics. We aim to provide an overview of deep learning so that bioinformaticians applying deep learning models can consider all critical technical and ethical aspects. Thus, our target audience is biomedical informatics researchers who use deep learning models for inference. This review will inspire more bioinformatics researchers to adopt deep-learning methods for their research questions while considering fairness, potential biases, explainability, and accountability. Classical large-signal device models are indirectly derived from small-signal S-parameter measurements. Long series time forecasting has become a popular research direction in recent years, due to the ability to predict weather changes, traffic conditions and so on. This paper provides a comprehensive discussion of long series time forecasting techniques and their applications, using the Informer algorithm model as a framework. Specifically, we examine sequential time prediction models published in the last two years, including the tightly coupled convolutional transformer (TCCT) algorithm, Autoformer algorithm, FEDformer algorithm, Pyraformer algorithm, and Triformer algorithm. Researchers have made significant improvements to the attention mechanism and Informer algorithm model architecture in these different neural network models, resulting in recent approaches such as wavelet enhancement structure, auto-correlation mechanism, and depth decomposition architecture. In addition to the above, attention algorithms and many models show potential and possibility in mechanical vibration prediction. In recent state-of-the-art studies, researchers have used the Informer algorithm model as an experimental control, and it can be seen that the algorithm model itself has research value. The informer algorithm model performs relatively well on various data sets and has become a more typical algorithm model for time series forecasting, and its model value is worthy of in-depth exploration and research. This paper discusses the structures and innovations of five representative models, including Informer, and reviews the performance of different neural network structures. This paper introduces a measure, called Lipschitz widths, of the optimal performance possible of certain nonlinear methods of approximation. Notably, those Lipschitz widths provide a theoretical benchmark for the approximation quality achieved via deep neural networks. The paper also discusses basic properties of the Lipschitz widths and their relation to entropy numbers and other well-known widths such as the Kolmogorov and the stable manifold widths. We show that Lipschitz widths with fixed Lipschitz constant and entropy numbers decay very similar, while when the Lipschitz constant grows with n, the Lipschitz width could be much smaller than the entropy numbers. In wind speed prediction technologies, deep learning-based methods have achieved promising advantages. However, most existing methods focus on learning implicit knowledge in a data-driven manner but neglect some explicit knowledge from the physical theory of meteorological dynamics, failing to make stable and long-term predictions. In this paper, we explore introducing explicit physical knowledge into neural networks and propose Physical Equations Predictive Network (PEPNet) for multi-step wind speed predictions. In PEPNet, a new neural block called the Augmented Neural Barotropic Equations (ANBE) block is designed as its key component, which aims to capture the wind dynamics by combining barotropic primitive equations and deep neural networks. Specifically, the ANBE block adopts a two-branch structure to model wind dynamics, where one branch is physic-based and the other is data-driven-based. The physic-based branch constructs temporal partial derivatives of meteorological elements (including u-component wind, v-component wind, and geopotential height) in a new Neural Barotropic Equations Unit (NBEU). The NBEU is developed based on the barotropic primitive equations mode in numerical weather prediction (NWP). Besides, considering that the barotropic primitive mode is a crude assumption of atmospheric motion, another data-driven-based branch is developed in the ANBE block, which aims at capturing meteorological dynamics beyond barotropic primitive equations. Finally, the PEPNet follows a time-variant structure to enhance the model's capability to capture wind dynamics over time. To evaluate the predictive performance of PEPNet, we have conducted several experiments on two real-world datasets. The problem of vanishing and exploding gradients has been a long-standing obstacle that hinders the effective training of neural networks. Despite various tricks and techniques that have been employed to alleviate the problem in practice, there still lacks satisfactory theories or provable solutions. In this paper, we address the problem from the perspective of high-dimensional probability theory. We provide a rigorous result that shows, under mild conditions, how the vanishing/exploding gradients problem disappears with high probability if the neural networks have sufficient width. Our main idea is to constrain both forward and backward signal propagation in a nonlinear neural network through a new class of activation functions, namely Gaussian–Poincaré normalized functions, and orthogonal weight matrices. To reliably and accurately classify complicated "big" datasets, machine learning models must be continually improved. This research proposes straightforward yet competitive neural networks for text classification, even though graph neural networks (GNN) have reignited interest in graph-based text classification models. Convolutional neural networks (CNN), artificial neural networks (ANN), and their refined "fine-tuned" models (denoted as FT-CNN and FT-ANN) are the names given to our proposed models. The models presented in this paper demonstrate that our simple models like (CNN, ANN, FT-CNN, and FT-ANN) can perform better than more complex GNN ones such as (SGC, SSGC, and TextGCN) and are comparable to others (i.e., HyperGAT and Bert). The process of fine-tuning is also highly recommended because it improves the performance and reliability of models. The performance of our suggested models on five benchmark datasets (namely, Reuters (R8), R52, 20NewsGroup, Ohsumed, and Mr) is vividly illustrated. According to the experimental findings, on the majority of the target datasets, these models—especially those that have been fine-tuned—perform surprisingly better than SOTA approaches, including GNN-based models. Multiconnectivity allows user equipment/devices to connect to multiple radio access technologies simultaneously, including 5G, 4G (LTE), and WiFi. It is a necessity in meeting the increasing demand for mobile network services for the 5G and beyond wireless networks, while ensuring that mobile operators can still reap the benefits of their present investments. Multipath TCP (MPTCP) has been introduced to allow uninterrupted reliable data transmission over multiconnectivity links. However, energy consumption is a significant issue for multihomed wireless devices since most of them are battery-powered. This paper employs software-defined networking (SDN) and deep neural networks (DNNs) to manage the energy consumption of devices with multiconnectivity running MPTCP. The proposed method involves two lightweight algorithms implemented on an SDN controller, using a real hardware testbed of dual-homed wireless nodes connected to WiFi and cellular networks. The first algorithm determines whether a node should connect to a specific network or both networks. The second algorithm improves the selection made by the first by using a DNN trained on different scenarios, such as various network sizes and MPTCP congestion control algorithms. The results of our extensive experimentation show that this approach effectively reduces energy consumption while providing better network throughput performance compared to using single-path TCP or MPTCP Cubic or BALIA for all nodes. This paper studies deep neural networks for solving extremely large linear systems arising from high-dimensional problems. Because of the curse of dimensionality, it is expensive to store both the solution and right-hand side vector in such extremely large linear systems. Our idea is to employ a neural network to characterize the solution with many fewer parameters than the size of the solution under a matrix-free setting. We present an error analysis of the proposed method, indicating that the solution error is bounded by the condition number of the matrix and the neural network approximation error. Several numerical examples from partial differential equations, queueing problems, and probabilistic Boolean networks are presented to demonstrate that the solutions of linear systems can be learned quite accurately. In this paper, a hydraulic motor controller is designed with a fuzzy supported integral sliding mode algorithm. The hydraulic system used in the study was modeled using artificial neural networks. Ability of handling nonlinearity of systems makes sliding mode controller to be a good choose for this system. It is thought that the robustness of the system against uncertainties can be achieved with the help of an integral sliding mode controller. The basic concept of the suggested control method is to use fuzzy logic for adaptation of the integral sliding mode control switching gain. Such adjustment reduces the chattering that is the most problem of classical sliding mode control. The equivalent control is computed with utilizing the radial basis function neural network. The simulation results of the presented method are compared with the results of the PID controller whose parameters were obtained by means of a genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO). Weight-tied models have attracted attention in the modern development of neural networks. The deep equilibrium model (DEQ) represents infinitely deep neural networks with weight-tying, and recent studies have shown the potential of this type of approach. DEQs are needed to iteratively solve root-finding problems in training and are built on the assumption that the underlying dynamics determined by the models converge to a fixed point. In this paper, we present the stable invariant model (SIM) , a new class of deep models that in principle approximates DEQs under stability and extends the dynamics to more general ones converging to an invariant set (not restricted in a fixed point). The key ingredient in deriving SIMs is a representation of the dynamics with the spectra of the Koopman and Perron–Frobenius operators. This perspective approximately reveals stable dynamics with DEQs and then derives two variants of SIMs. We also propose an implementation of SIMs that can be learned in the same way as feedforward models. Blade icing seriously affects wind turbines' aerodynamic performance and output power. Timely and accurately predicting blade icing status is crucial to improving the economy and safety of wind farms. However, existing blade icing prediction methods cannot effectively solve the problems of unbalanced icing/non-icing data and low prediction accuracy. In order to solve the above problems, this paper proposes a wind turbine blade icing prediction method based on the focal loss function and CNN-Attention-GRU. First, the recursive feature elimination method combined with the physical mechanism of icing is used to extract features highly correlated with blade icing, and a new feature subset is formed through a sliding window algorithm. Then, the focal loss function is utilized to assign more weight to the ice samples with a lower proportion, addressing the significant class imbalance between the ice and non-ice categories. Finally, based on the CNN-Attention-GRU algorithm, a blade icing prediction model is established using continuous 24-h historical data as the input and the icing status of the next 24 h as the output. The model is compared with advanced neural network models. The results show that the proposed method improves the prediction accuracy and F1 score by an average of 6.41% and 4.27%, respectively, demonstrating the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed method. This paper serves as a survey of recent advances in large margin training and its theoretical foundations, mostly for (nonlinear) deep neural networks (DNNs) that are probably the most prominent machine learning models for large-scale data in the community over the past decade. We generalize the formulation of classification margins from classical research to latest DNNs, summarize theoretical connections between the margin, network generalization, and robustness, and introduce recent efforts in enlarging the margins for DNNs comprehensively. Since the viewpoint of different methods is discrepant, we categorize them into groups for ease of comparison and discussion in the paper. Hopefully, our discussions and overview inspire new research work in the community that aim to improve the performance of DNNs, and we also point to directions where the large margin principle can be verified to provide theoretical evidence why certain regularizations for DNNs function well in practice. Model pruning is one of the main methods of deep neural network model compression. However, the existing model pruning methods are inefficient, there is still a lot of redundancy in the network, and the pruning has a great impact on the accuracy. In addition, the traditional pruning process usually needs to fine-tune the network to restore accuracy, and fine-tuning has a limited effect on accuracy recovery, so it is difficult to achieve a high level of accuracy. In this paper, we propose a new neural network pruning framework: the channel sparsity is realized by introducing a scale factor, and the sparse network is pruned by setting a global threshold, which greatly improves the efficiency of pruning. After pruning, this paper proposes a rewind method to restore the accuracy, that is, save the weight after training, and then reload it on the network for training to restore the accuracy. In addition, we also study the best rewind point of the three networks. The experimental results show that our method significantly reduces the number of parameters and FLOPs without affecting or even improving the accuracy, and the rewind method proposed by us achieves a better accuracy recovery effect than fine-tuning. At the same time, we find that the epoch with the highest accuracy is the best rewind point, and the accuracy is the highest after saving its corresponding weight and retraining the model. Real-time and accurate state-of-charge estimation performs an important role in the smooth operation of various electric vehicle battery management systems. Neural network theory represents one of the most effective and commonly used methods of SOC prediction. However, traditional neural network methods are disadvantaged by such issues as the limited range of application, limited generalization ability, and low accuracy, which makes it difficult to meet the increasing safety requirements on electric vehicles. In view of these problems, an ensemble learning algorithm based on the AdaBoost.Rt is proposed in this paper. AdaBoost.Rt recurrent neural network model is purposed to ensure the accurate prediction of lithium battery SOC. Relying on a chain-connected recurrent neural network model, this method enables the correlation adaptability of sample data in the spatio-temporal dimension. The ensemble learning method was adopted to devise a method of multi-RNN model integration, with the RNN model as the base learner, thus constructing the AdaBoost.Rt-RNN strong learner model. According to the results of simulation and experimental comparisons, the integrated algorithm proposed in this paper is applicable to improve the accuracy of SOC prediction and the generalization performance of the model. Background: During the process of the treatment of COVID-19 hospitalized patients, physicians still face a lot of unknowns and problems. Despite the application of the treatment protocol, it is still unknown why the medical status of a certain number of patients worsens and ends with death. Many factors were analyzed for the prediction of the clinical outcome of the patients using different methods. The aim of this paper was to develop a prediction model based on initial laboratory blood test results, accompanying comorbidities, and demographics to help physicians to better understand the medical state of patients with respect to possible clinical outcomes using neural networks, hypothesis testing, and confidence intervals. Methods: The research had retrospective-prospective, descriptive, and analytical character. As inputs for this research, 12 components of laboratory blood test results, six accompanying comorbidities, and demographics (age and gender) data were collected from hospital information system in Sarajevo for each patient from a sample of 634 hospitalized patients. Clinical outcome of the hospitalized patients, survival or death, was recorded 30 days after admission to the hospital. The prediction model was designed using a neural network. In addition, formal hypothesis tests were performed to investigate whether there were significant differences in laboratory blood test results and age between patients who died and those who survived, including the construction of 95% confidence intervals. Results: In this paper, 11 neural networks were developed with different threshold values to determine the optimal neural network with the highest prediction performance. The performances of the neural networks were evaluated by accuracy, precision, sensitivity, and specificity. Optimal neural network model evaluation metrics are: accuracy = 87.78%, precision = 96.37%, sensitivity = 90.07%, and specificity = 62.16%. Significantly higher values (P < 0.05) of blood laboratory result components and age were detected in patients who died. Conclusion: Optimal neural network model, results of hypothesis tests, and confidence intervals could help to predict, analyze, and better understand the medical state of COVID-19 hospitalized patients and thus reduce the mortality rate. To tune the wave energy converter (WEC) controller parameters such as damping to reduce the line force during extreme wave conditions, future knowledge of the line force is required. To achieve this, the incoming wave and system state should be predicted for a few seconds in the future. It is rather an arduous task to predict the future knowledge of waves and the system's dynamic when dealing with breaking and steep waves, and the system is subject to various nonlinear forces. The classical model-based control strategies often rely on linear assumptions to estimate the WEC dynamics for the sake of simplicity. Unlike the model-based, the data-driven approaches are free from modeling errors and the algorithms are trained over the true and noisy data to predict non-linear system behaviors. Using data-driven approaches, we are able to model nonlinear dynamics. However, new questions emerge on the accuracy of the future wave and system state predictions, and how this uncertainty propagates into the final prediction of the line force. As incorrect damping may lead to excessive line force and detrimental damage to the system, these are the knowledge gaps that need to be addressed. The main purpose of this paper is to answer these questions through a survivability strategy for wave energy converters by providing a realistic perspective on the implementation of the neural network approaches by accounting for the errors in the input data. For this purpose, a series of neural networks is designed that first predicts the surface elevation for 0.36 s ahead, i.e. corresponding to 2 s in the full-scale WEC. This future knowledge of the wave elevation is then used to predict the system state (i.e. power take-off (PTO) translator position) for the same prediction horizon based on the PTO damping. This information is then fed to a convolutional neural network (CNN) that predicts the peak line force 0.36 s ahead. This paper also evaluates the predictive capabilities of neural network (NN) models, comparing them to classical autoregressive (AR) and Kalman filter methods. While the AR model exhibits slightly higher accuracy in fixed PTO system configurations, it falters in providing real-time predictions when system parameters undergo variations. In contrast, the NN prediction model excels by establishing a robust relationship between system configuration and output signals. Especially noteworthy is its ability to outperform classical methods with minimal training on a selective set of system configurations. Then, the sensitivity of the peak line force prediction to the uncertainties in the input data from NN models and the prediction horizon is analyzed. The neural network models are trained over the experimental data subjected to extreme sea states for a point absorber wave energy converter. The results suggest that the accuracy of the surface elevation prediction has an insignificant direct effect on the peak force prediction model. However, these uncertainties are reflected in the PTO translator position prediction, and the model is considerably sensitive to the accuracy of this prediction. The rapidly evolving field of Virtual Reality (VR)-based Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) presents a significant demand for robust and accurate hand tracking solutions. Current technologies, predominantly based on single-sensing modalities, fall short in providing comprehensive information capture due to susceptibility to occlusions and environmental factors. In this paper, we introduce a novel sensor fusion approach combined with a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM)-based algorithm for enhanced hand tracking in VR-based HCI. Our system employs six Leap Motion controllers, two RealSense depth cameras, and two Myo armbands to yield a multi-modal data capture. This rich data set is then processed using LSTM, ensuring the accurate real-time tracking of complex hand movements. The application of neural network models to solve combinatorial optimization has recently drawn much attention and shown promising results in dealing with similar problems, like Travelling Salesman Problem. The neural network allows to learn solutions based on given problem instances, using reinforcement learning or supervised learning. In this paper, we present a novel end-to-end method to solve routing problems. In specific, we propose a gated cosine-based attention model (GCAM) to train policies, which accelerates the training process and the convergence of policy. Rapidly growing catalogs of compact binary mergers from advanced gravitational wave detectors allow us to explore the astrophysics of massive stellar binaries. Merger observations can constrain the uncertain parameters that describe the underlying processes in the evolution of stars and binary systems in population models. In this paper, we demonstrate that binary black hole populations—in particular, their detection rates, chirp masses, and redshifts—can be used to measure cosmological parameters describing the redshift-dependent star formation rate and metallicity distribution. We present a method that uses artificial neural networks to emulate binary population synthesis computer models, and construct a fast, flexible, parallelizable surrogate model that we use for inference. Geometallurgical models are commonly built by combining explanatory variables to obtain the response that requires prediction. This study presented a phosphate plant with three concentration steps: magnetic separation, desliming and flotation, where the yields and recoveries corresponding to each process unit were predicted. These output variables depended on the ore composition and the collector concentration utilized. This paper proposed a solution based on feature engineering to select the best set of explanatory variables and a subset of them able to keep the model as simple as possible but with enough precision and accuracy. After choosing the input variables, two neural network models were developed to simultaneously forecast the seven geometallurgical variables under study: the first, using the best set of variables; and the second, using the reduced set of inputs. The forecasts obtained in both scenarios were compared, and the results showed that the mean squared error and the root mean squared error increase in all output variables evaluated in the test set was smaller than 2.6% when the reduced set was used. Deep unrolling networks (DUNs) have emerged as a promising approach for solving compressed sensing (CS) problems due to their superior explainability, speed, and performance compared to classical deep network models. However, the CS performance in terms of efficiency and accuracy remains a principal challenge for approaching further improvements. In this paper, we propose a novel deep unrolling model, SALSA-Net, to solve the image CS problem. The network architecture of SALSA-Net is inspired by unrolling and truncating the split augmented Lagrangian shrinkage algorithm (SALSA) which is used to solve sparsity-induced CS reconstruction problems. SALSA-Net inherits the interpretability of the SALSA algorithm while incorporating the learning ability and fast reconstruction speed of deep neural networks. By converting the SALSA algorithm into a deep network structure, SALSA-Net consists of a gradient update module, a threshold denoising module, and an auxiliary update module. All parameters, including the shrinkage thresholds and gradient steps, are optimized through end-to-end learning and are subject to forward constraints to ensure faster convergence. Furthermore, we introduce learned sampling to replace traditional sampling methods so that the sampling matrix can better preserve the feature information of the original signal and improve sampling efficiency. Experimental results demonstrate that SALSA-Net achieves significant reconstruction performance compared to state-of-the-art methods while inheriting the advantages of explainable recovery and high speed from the DUNs paradigm.
