Understanding the use of natural corridors is critical for characterizing the past use of marginally occupied landscapes at the Andean fringes of western Patagonia by the hunter-gatherer groups who inhabited this region. In this paper, we combine least-cost path models and archaeological surveys and excavations to determine the possible movements along the southern margin of General Carrera Lake. The methodology includes defining uncertainties that allow for modeling a set of equiprobable routes, thereby avoiding problems with errors and biases from predictors, such as slope, land-use cover, and seasonality. The results identify mobility corridor bottlenecks, i.e., geographical areas with a high probability of travel routes with equiprobable routes that converge. In addition, we identify areas where travel routes are likely to diverge into multiple semi-parallel routes. The study of archaeological sites provides stratigraphic data to control for the chronology and characteristics of mobility along this transect. The correlation between archaeological sites and paths, specifically for the control and winter scenarios, shows the quality of these route predictions. The Patagonian coast has been occupied at least since the Middle Holocene but the way in which humans have interacted with spaces and resources in different areas of the coast has varied. As such, it is important to study the specifics of each occupation. In this paper, the activities that would have taken place at Cabeza de León 1 archaeological site, Monte León National Park, Santa Cruz province, Argentina, are addressed from the study of the recovered lithic assemblages. Results show the use of local raw material, the development of all manufacture stages in situ and the implementation of mainly expedient strategies. It can also be inferred that activities were mostly related to the capture and processing of resources. La costa patagónica ha sido ocupada desde mínimamente el Holoceno medio, pero el modo en que los humanos interactuaron con el espacio y los recursos a lo largo del tiempo en los distintos sectores fue diferente, lo que hace necesario estudiar las particularidades de cada ocupación. Aquí se abordan las actividades tecnológicas que se habrían desarrollado en el sitio Cabeza de León 1, sito en el Parque Nacional Monte León (Santa Cruz, Argentina), a partir del estudio de los materiales líticos allí recuperados. Several foodborne diseases have been described in coastal populations from the past, many of them including parasitic infections related to marine diets. Considering this background, the strong relationship between hunter-gatherers from Patagonia and the marine species implies a possible source of parasitic infections and zoonotic risk. However, marine parasitic species have not been identified in archaeological sites from Patagonia so far. The aim of this paper is to propose the potential parasitic infections produced by the consumption of marine molluscs, fishes, birds and sea mammals by human populations from Patagonia during the Holocene, considering the current parasitic species identified in the Southern Atlantic Ocean. We searched in journal articles and book chapters for references of archaeological remains of molluscs, fishes, seabirds and marine mammals recorded in archaeological sites from the Atlantic coast below the 42nd parallel South. Afterwards, we surveyed all the macroparasites of marine origin identified by current parasitological research in the same species found in the archaeological record. We found that most of the marine species in the zooarchaeological record of Patagonia are currently hosts of many parasites. Some species of molluscs, fishes and pinnipeds are highly infected by larvae that are potentially hazardous for human health. Some of them are responsible for acute or chronic zoonotic diseases, with severe consequences depending on how the food was cooked, the amount of consumed parasites and the immune response of the host, in this case, humans. Fishes are host of several parasites related to anisakidosis and corynosomiasis. Sea lions species were also a potential source of the same zoonosis but also diphyllobothriasis. Molluscs are hosts of several parasitic species, but with less severe consequences for human health. On the other hand, birds are infected by adult parasites, without direct zoonotic importance. These findings, although limited by temporal and environmental variability, can provide a speculative overview about the potential influence of marine diets in the health of past hunter-gatherers of Patagonia, particularly if fishes, molluscs or marine mammals were consumed inadequately cooked. The acquisition of opportunistic animal resources by hunter-gatherers—such as scavenged carcasses—is a well-known subsistence strategy. It is frequently mentioned in the context of the history of early human evolution, but not regularly considered among the strategies utilized by more recent foragers of the Southern Cone of South America. Historical and ethnographic information presented here suggests that the use of opportunistic animal resources was a strategy used under a number of conditions but only partially docu- mented in the archaeological literature. We also present archaeological evidence from four sites—Guardia del Río, Paso Otero 1, Ponsonby, and Myren—in different Pampean and Patagonian settings where relevant guanaco (Lama guanicoe) bone assemblages were recov - ered. These sites record minimal anthropic involvement, basically cut marks on some gua- naco bones accompanied by few stone tools, that we interpret as evidence for access and use of water logged immobilized or recently dead animals. Archaeological evidence for the use of these scavenging strategies is difficult to obtain at large archaeological sites that usually result from multiple occupations, since the distinction between the acquisition of actively pursued versus opportunistic animal resources is not straightforward. One conclusion from our review is that the best places to find and recognize this evidence are archaeological sites resulting from ephemeral occupations. Petrographic, chemical, technological and distributional analyses of obsidian artifacts are a main focus of research in Fuego-Patagonia (Argentina and Chile, Southernmost South America). Despite the increasing interest in rocks exploited by Patagonian hunter-gatherers, few studies explored the large-scale distribution pattern of different types of obsidian. This paper compiles geographical data from stratified archaeological sites which record two main obsidian types over the past 10,000 years: black obsidian from Pampa del Asador (exploited by terrestrial hunter-gatherers from the Patagonia mainland) and green obsidian from the Otway Sound (exploited by maritime populations from the Fuegian Archipelago). The spatial distribution of sites with black and green obsidians is evaluated separately using spatial statistics. Results from spatial analyses statistically prove the differential nature of the spatial pattern between both sets of sites over time. It is suggested that the difference in the initial chronology of the human colonization, recognition of obsidian sources and long-distance transport of exotic raw materials between the mainland and insular spaces largely explains these results. Differences in human mobility and social interactions between terrestrial and maritime hunter-gatherers would account for further spatial variability between both sets of sites. The objective of this work is to reconstruct production sequences and use of woody raw materials among Patagonian hunter-gatherer groups. To this end, we studied small fragments of non-carbonized wood, pieces of wood with distinct types of technological features and formatized artefacts and/or wooden tools from two archaeological sites in south-central Argentine Patagonia. The taxonomic results showed the recurrent use of two taxa, Nothofagus pumilio and Berberis sp., among distinct occupations corresponding to both the early and late Holocene. The morphological and traceological results demonstrate the implementation of different technical operations such as the debarking and the roughing of the wood, as well as bevelled and perimeter cuts. They also show the recurrent presence of certain technological features and traces in woods and artefacts associated with distinct occupations in the Holocene. To sum up, the results reached reaffirm the existence of a selective practice of woody plant species to be used as raw material, and at the same time, the results reveal the existence of a sustained formatization over time and suggest the existence of production sequences related to the development of wood technology among Patagonian hunter-gatherer groups. Paleoparasitology is the study of parasite remains from archaeological and paleontological sites. Raptor pellets can be used as source for paleoparasitological information in archaeological sites. However, this zooarchaeological material has been scarcely studied. Epullán Chica (ECh) is an archaeological site in northwestern Patagonia. This cave yielded remains from more than 2000 years before present. The aim of this paper was to study the parasite remains found in owl pellets from the archaeological site ECh, and to discuss the paleoparasitological findings in an archaeological context. Twenty two raptor pellets were examined for parasites. The pellets were whole processed by rehydration in a 0.5% water solution of trisodium phosphate, followed by homogenization, filtered and processed by spontaneous sedimentation. Eight out of 22 bird pellets examined were positive for parasites from reptiles and rodents. Representatives of 12 parasite taxa were recorded; nine of this parasitic species were reported for the first time from ancient samples from Patagonia. This is the first time that pellets give evidences of ancient reptile parasites from archaeological contexts. It is noteworthy that Late Holocene hunter-gatherers of the upper Limay River basin, could have been exposed to some of these zoonotic parasites. Future paleoparasitological studies on owl pellets may reflect even more the parasitological diversity of all micromammal and reptile species presents in ancient times. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a study on the rock art of northern Patagonia based on network analysis and communities detection. We unveil a significant aggregation of archaeological sites, linked by common rock art motifs that turn out to be consistent with their geographical distribution and archaeological background of hunter-gatherer stages of regional peopling and land use. The results of the X‐ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis of 59 obsidian samples from 11 archaeological sites in the Auca Mahuida region of north‐western Neuquén, Argentina, are present. They indicate that several obsidian sources were used; however, the intensities of their exploitation were variable. Strong differences appear between the Colorado River basin, characterized by a low variability of obsidian groups from northern Neuquén; the Auca volcano, with a low variability of obsidian groups, but from local sources located north and southwards of the study area; and along Bajo del Añelo, which presents a high variability of obsidian groups from several local and non‐local sources. The pattern recorded fits different mechanisms of access to the sources and the conveyance of obsidian across the landscape. Two distinct paths of direct access are suggested for obsidian availability along the Colorado River in northern Neuquén and for Portada Covunco obsidian in central Neuquén. Additionally, the presence of obsidian from sources in southern Neuquén province (Cerro Las Planicies‐Lago Lolog), located about 350 km from the study area, is suggested. While not yet conclusive, this possibility parsimoniously integrates the available geochemical and spatial information, allowing the existence of either long‐distance transport or indirect access by exchange or similar mechanisms to be proposed. Portable Raman spectroscopy is applied for the first time on rock art paintings from hunter-gatherers in three different provinces in Patagonia, Argentina (Neuquén, Río Negro and Chubut). Selected archaeological sites were examined, revealing the local 'palette' of the native population and, if possible, the technology used. Moreover, alteration products were investigated to obtain valuable information for a better conservation and preservation of these magnificent rock art paintings. During a single research campaign, 16 shelters and one cave were investigated, which makes this study as one of the most condensed expeditions on measuring rock art paintings. Here, we evaluate the use of our portable Raman instrument to analyse rock art paintings under extreme conditions in Patagonia, Argentina. Zooarchaeological analyses of pinniped remains have been scarce in South America because of lack of specific studies of species determination and estimation of age and sex. Nonetheless, the presence of small and unfused bones (assigned as pup remains) of Otaria flavescens ( O. flavescens) in the Patagonian archaeological record has been frequently used as an indicator of summer occupation accomplished by ecological analogues. For this reason, we carried out a postcranial skeletons osteometric study of modern pups of South American sea lions ( O. flavescens) with known sex and aged 0-12 months, allowing a more precise age estimation of archaeological samples. Then, we revisited the evidence for seasonality in the Cabo Virgenes 6 site at Cabo Virgenes locality, one of the archaeological localities in Patagonia where the seasonality has been determined only on the basis of the presence of unfused pup bones. Our metric data study on a modern sample shows that the regression analyses generated a complementary and dependable age estimation model for unfused appendicular bones of O. flavescens between 0 and 12 months old that can be applied to samples recovered from archaeological sites. These osteometric studies of postcranial elements allow us to adjust the age estimation of the animal's death and re-examine seasonality of the Cabo Virgenes 6 site (Santa Cruz, Argentina). This work presents several thermoluminescence ( TL) dates of six archaeological sites located in the Andean valley of the Chacabuco River, central Patagonia. We discuss the advantages of this method to assess the chronology of human occupations, employing samples of lithic artefacts with evidence of fire exposure from surface contexts in the area. We compare the results with stratigraphic archaeological dating by 14 C. We discuss these results in the context of previously formulated hypotheses on the past behaviour of the human population in this area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An evaluation of Late Pleistocene interactions between ground sloths and humans in the Fuego-Patagonia of Chile and Argentina is presented. Aspects of ground sloth taphonomy are explored, particularly the difficulties of using cut-mark and breakage evidence to recognize human exploitation. Selective transport of large animal bones is also reviewed in regards to its use as a marker of human exploitation of ground sloths. An evaluation of the relevant archaeological and paleontological records for the individual taxon Mylodon sp. is presented. It is concluded that there is little to no evidence for active human hunting of ground sloths and that scavenging is the only form of interaction that can be defended. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
