(1) Background: Many drugs possess poor bioavailability, and many strategies are available to overcome this issue. In this study, smartFilm technology, i.e., a porous cellulose matrix (paper), in which the active compound can be loaded onto in an amorphous state was utilised for oral administration to improve the solubility and bioactivity of a poorly soluble BSC class IV antibiotic. (2) Methods: Norfloxacin was used as the model drug and loaded into commercially available paper. The resulting norfloxacin-loaded smartFilms were transformed into smartFilm granules via wet granulation and the resulting norfloxacin-loaded smartFilm granules were transformed into norfloxacin-loaded tablets made from paper, i.e., smartFilm tablets. The crystalline state of norfloxacin was investigated, as well as the pharmaceutical properties of the granules and the tablets. The bioactivity of the smartFilm tablets was assessed in vitro and ex vivo to determine the antibacterial activity of norfloxacin. The results were compared to a physical mixture tablet that contained non-loaded paper granules and equal amounts of norfloxacin as a crystalline powder. (3) Results: Norfloxacin-loaded smartFilm granules and norfloxacin-loaded smartFilm tablets contained norfloxacin in an amorphous state, which resulted in an improved and faster release of norfloxacin when compared to the physical mixture tablet. The bioactivity was up to three times higher when compared to the physical mixture tablet. The ex vivo model was demonstrated to be a useful tool that allows for a fast and cost-effective discrimination between "good" and "bad" formulations. It provides realistic physiological conditions and can therefore yield meaningful, additional biopharmaceutical information that cannot be assessed in classical in vitro experiments. (4) Conclusions: smartFilm tablets are a promising, universal, industrially feasible and cost-effective formulation strategy for improved solubility and enhanced bioactivity of poorly soluble drugs. Bacteriophages find applications in agriculture, medicine, and food safety. Many of these applications can expose bacteriophages to stresses that inactivate them including acidic and basic pH. Bacteriophages can be stabilized against these stresses by materials including paper, a common material in packaging and consumer products. Combining paper and bacteriophages creates antibacterial materials, which can reduce the use of antibiotics. Here we show that adsorption on paper protects T4, T5, and T7 bacteriophage from acidic and basic pH. We added bacteriophages to filter paper functionalized with carboxylic acid (carboxyl methyl cellulose) or amine (chitosan) groups, and exposed them to pH from 5.6 to 14. We determined the number of infective bacteriophages after exposure directly on the paper. All papers extended the lifetime of infective bacteriophage by at least a factor of four with some papers stabilizing bacteriophages for up to one week. The degree of stabilization depended on five main factors (i) the family of the bacteriophage, (ii) the charge of the paper and bacteriophages, (iii) the location of the bacteriophages within the paper, (iv) the ability of the paper to prevent bacteriophage-bacteriophage aggregation, and (v) the sensitivity of the bacteriophage proteins to the tested pH. Even when adsorbed on paper the bacteriophages were able to remove E. coli in milk. Choosing the right paper modification or material will protect bacteriophages adsorbed on that material against detrimental pH and other environmental challenges increasing the range of applications of bacteriophages on materials. Paper-based materials have been used in every aspect of social life. However, the current paper-based materials face unprecedented challenges, such as limited lifespan and poor mechanical strength, owing to the deformation after absorbing a large amount of water and bacterial erosion. Herein, superhydrophobic and lyophobic paper was fabricated using internal sizing technology. Hydrophobically modified starch and Ag@SiO 2 particles were added as two functional additives to paper pulp to promote a hierarchical structure formation with low surface energy. Consequently, the water and linseed oil contact angles of the obtained paper reached 154.8° and 138.4°, respectively. The resistance to moisture and water vapor also improved under high-humidity condition, the relative moisture content decreased from 511% to 278% and water vapor transmission rate also decreased from 97.44 to 21.23 g/m2·h. Furthermore, its mechanical properties could also be well maintained with a high fracture stress of 4.91 MPa. Besides, some liquid food, such as honey, easily rolled off the surface without leaving behind any residue, which demonstrated its self-cleaning ability. Furthermore, the modified paper exhibited notable bacterial repellency and antibacterial activity. This study provides an innovative method for endowing conventional paper with superhydrophobic and antibacterial properties, which can effectively expand their application scope. This study investigates the antibacterial properties of the natural oil from Copaifera multijuga which was embedded in bio-based materials, to be used in active packaging applications. For this purpose, the naturally extracted copaiba oil was first characterized by gas chromatography and thermogravimetry. Its antibacterial properties were evaluated and confirmed against gram-positive bacteria ( Bacillus subtilis ). The copaiba oil was incorporated into two bio-based materials: (i) paper and (ii) poly(lactic acid), PLA, films. This incorporation was made following two strategies: either at the surface, thanks to a coating process, or in the bulk, through impregnation (paper samples) or by film casting (PLA films). The antibacterial tests confirmed activity against B. subtilis in paper with a copaiba oil content of approximately 20 wt%. For the PLA films, the same amount showed satisfactory results against the same bacteria. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time that copaiba oil has been incorporated on paper sheets and plastic films, with the confirmation of the maintenance of the effective antibacterial properties. The materials developed in this work through simple procedures have great perspective to be used as biodegradable packaging with bactericide effect, to improve the shelf life of food products. The nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) was used as substrates to carry triclosan (TCS), which was then applied as a coating agent for impacting antibacterial property to paper while also improving its strength. The TCS-loaded NFC material was further characterized. UV–vis spectra results showed that a characteristic absorption band at 282 nm was observed, which was attributed to triclosan, confirming its successful loading onto NFC. The antibacterial activity tests indicated that the coated paper exhibited excellent antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli , and the growth inhibition of bacteria (GIB) increased as the loading amount of triclosan coated on paper increased. The GIB can reach 98.7% when the 0.023 g TCS-loaded NFC was coated on paper. Meanwhile, the tensile and tear index of the coated paper increased by 18.0% and 26.4%, respectively compared to the blank paper. In this study, a suitable method is reported to produce reinforced antibacterial paper packaging using the antimicrobial triclosan (TC) and organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT) as 'model' compounds. Direct incorporation of TC at a concentration of 1 wt% and OMMT at concentrations of 1, 4, 7, and 10 wt% into papers was performed via coating process, and the resulting materials were characterized by in vitro antimicrobial assays, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, mechanical tests, and water vapor transmission rate determinations. It was demonstrated that the presence of 1% TC in the coated papers exhibited inhibitory effects against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. It was also pointed out that increases of approximately 30% in the tensile strength of commercial paper are obtained by using the OMMT at a concentration of 1 wt%. Water barrier property and thermal stability of paper were also enhanced because of the coating process and the incorporation of OMMT. The results from this study demonstrate that OMMT has a great potential to be incorporated into coating formulations to obtain antibacterial-coated papers with improved properties for various packaging applications. In this study antibacterial coated paper packaging with improved properties were prepared from incorporation of nanoclay montmorillonite and antimicrobial triclosan into coatings. The materials were characterized by mechanical and antimicrobial tests, water barrier and thermal analysis. It was demonstrated that use of nanoclay increases significantly the tensile strength of coated papers, besides increase the thermal stability of them. All triclosan-containing papers presented inhibitory effect against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. In addition, all coated papers presented superior water barrier due to coating process.
