Alumina-based multilayer laminates with layers of varied porosities and ceramic fiber reinforcements, which can be achieved by including paper-derived ceramic layers, are interesting candidates for chemically stable and thermal shock resistant materials. In order to investigate the complex sintering behavior of these laminates, the sintering of each alumina layer contained within a laminate, each one with its individual sintering anisotropy and sintering shrinkage, has to be considered separately. For this purpose, sintering curves are determined by dilatometry measurements, serving a consecutive examination by an analytical model. Modeling parameters specific to each layer, are applied in finite-element-type sintering simulations for symmetrical multilayer laminates. Differences in the sintering shrinkages may cause internal stresses at layer interfaces and, in turn, may influence the thermal and mechanical properties of multilayer laminates after sintering. Accordingly, the prediction of developing internal stresses within alumina-based multilayer laminates by the presented sintering simulations is a key aspect of this study. Dimensional stability issues may occur in paper sheets when subjected to moisture content variations. Paper is in fact mainly composed of hydrophilic wood fibres that experience significant dimensional changes upon humidity variations. The hygro-expansive deformations at the single fibre level and their effects on the meso-structural fibrous network govern the hygro-mechanical response of paper at the macroscopic, sheet scale. The present contribution aims at offering a relation between theoretical predictions and experimental measurements of the hygro-expansive behaviour of paper. Experimental observations of the hygroscopic and mechanical response at the sheet level have been performed, providing the anisotropic hygro-elastic properties of the material in the in-plane principal directions. To understand the multi-scale nature of the phenomenon, a periodic two dimensional meso-structural model of the fibrous network has been developed. The effective material response is extracted via homogenization. The influence of several meso-scale parameters (hygro-mechanical properties and geometry of fibres, inter-fibre bonds and of the network) on the overall behaviour of the material can be studied; in particular, the in-plane fibre orientation distribution along a preferential direction affects strongly the anisotropy of the macro-scale response. The proposed model has been adopted to represent the effective material response, focusing on the hygro-elastic response only and thus neglecting possible irreversible effects occurring at the different scales. A comparison of the experimental data with the results obtained from the model as a function of the fibre orientation distribution reveals a good accuracy of the prediction, thereby showing its applicability to estimate paper’s hygro-expansive response. Summary: Despite the high energy density, the lithium metal electrode has been plagued for decades with a dendrite growth problem that can result in a battery thermal runaway. Here, we introduce anisotropic spatially heterogeneous three dimensional (3D) current collectors that prevent lithium deposition on the insulating electrolyte-facing surface and accommodate lithium deposition inside the spacious voids. The anisotropic spatial heterogeneity was introduced by a line-of-sight deposition of a thin SiO2 layer onto a carbon-fiber paper. The deposited SiO2 was later converted into SiC by a magnesiothermic reaction. The SiO2 and SiC decorated 3D current collectors were confirmed dendrite-free by ex situ SEM observation after a deep lithium deposition of 28.8Ccm−2 at a high current density of 4mAcm−2. A high lithium cycling efficiency of 94% was achieved over deep deposition (14.4Ccm−2) and stripping cycles in a carbonate based organic electrolyte, demonstrating the superiority of the novel current collector for dendrite control and lithium cycling. Stochastic two-dimensional elastic–plastic network models are used to represent the inelastic deformation behavior of well-bonded paper. Linear kinematic hardening is employed with an initial non-zero back stress to represent anisotropic fiber yield. Network models are used to simulate simple monotonic tension and simple cyclic tension of paper materials. The performance of the models is compared to experimental results and found to perform reasonably well. The results suggest that interfiber bonding must be explicitly accounted for to adequately describe the material. Some discrepancy between the model and experimental cyclic tension results is believed to be due to time-dependent strain recovery in the material which is not represented in the network models. Experimental results are also presented which show that simple tension failure in these materials occurs along a line of localized deformation in a majority of the samples. This line is generally observed to form immediately prior to failure and is oriented at a well-defined angle with respect to the loading direction. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A paper web produced under industrial conditions always exhibits an anisotropy in its mechanical properties measured in the machine and cross directions. Proper and fast information about current paper anisotropy would significantly increase the efficiency of web quality control systems and allow to produce paper with greater precision. The main objective of the work presented was to determine the possibility of measurement of paper anisotropy. The method proposed is based on the image analysis of the orientation and location of special markers -- luminescent fibres -- which were introduced to the structure of the paper. Studies have shown that the method of image analysis provides a detection of fibres with a satisfactory level of efficiency, thus allowing accurate examination of the anisotropy of the paper samples analysed. On the basis of experiments, it was also found that the method of image analysis proposed allows to detect fibres with an accuracy appropriate for the problem under consideration. The structural features of four different kraft papers were related to their surface properties and to the response upon industrial impregnation with phenol−formaldehyde (PF) resin. The chemical composition and the structure of paper were suggested to be important factors determining the interaction with PF resin, which was assessed by contact angle measurements and surface energy analysis. The presence of fatty matter (extractives) and inorganic fillers together with structural anisotropy of paper confers the difference in affinity of the face and backside of papers toward PF resin. This affects the resin distribution in impregnated precured kraft papers as revealed by microfluorescence spectroscopic analysis of transversal cuts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is crucial for the successful application of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) power transformers that they are able to survive under abnormal operations, such as a short-circuit fault. Modeling, based on the design of a four-winding three-phase HTS power transformer, suggests severe boiling will occur on the surface of the winding during a short-circuit fault and will jeopardize the turn-to-turn insulation of the HTS power transformer. In this paper, a turn-to-turn insulation breakdown experiment platform involving the introduction of boiling on the surface of electrode has been built. Nomex 410 paper, one of the candidates for turn-to-turn insulation in the design of the HTS power transformer, was tested. The characteristics of dielectric strength of Nomex 410 in three different thicknesses (0.13, 0.18, and 0.25 mm) have been investigated, without boiling, as well as under different boiling situations, in an open bath of liquid nitrogen. The voltage application methods applied during both experiments test the electrical breakdown of Nomex 410 under a dynamic situation. The experiment results show that when under film boiling, compared to the test results for nucleate boiling, the dielectric strength of Nomex 410 paper decreases by approximately 38% of the value when no boiling is involved. Laminated paperboard and paper is widely used in packaging products. It generally exhibits highly anisotropic and nonlinear mechanical behavior. The aim of this study is to describe the in-plane material behavior with an orthotropic elastic-plastic model based on the observed experimental behavior. A structural tensor-based approach was applied to model the elastic deformation, while a multi-surface based yield criterion was adopted to describe the yield behavior. The model incorporated nonlinear kinematic and isotropic hardening to capture the anisotropic hardening effect. In the experiment, the compressive yield stress was found to be insensitive to the previous tensile deformation. The proposed model could capture this compression yield stress preserving effect under reverse loading, which in turn reduced the required material parameters as expected. With the material parameters calibrated from a set of simple uniaxial tests in various directions, the model was shown to predict the stress-strain behavior for other orientations satisfactorily. In this paper, a three-dimensional anisotropic multi-surface model for the in-plane elastoplastic deformation of paper and paperboard is developed. The model is based on the concept of structural tensors. It employs three different yield functions and parameterised consistency conditions for three different loading scenarios. The evolution of the yield surface with plastic strain is described by multiple hardening variables. Furthermore, the evolution equations are integrated using the unconditionally stable backward Euler method. Also, the internal variables are updated using a particular form of the elastic predictor/plastic corrector algorithm. The constitutive model is calibrated from a set of simple uniaxial tension tests performed in various directions of the material and is validated against loading in other directions. Additionally, the predictive capability as well as the numerical performance of the constitutive model is accessed against an existing non-quadratic plasticity model. Laminated paperboard and paper is widely used in packaging products. Its out-of-plane properties play a crucial role in converting paperboard to a carton through the creasing and folding process. The aim of this study is to describe the out-of-plane mechanical response with an elastic-plastic model based on the observed experimental behavior. The model was derived from a thermodynamic framework and was based on the multiplicative split of the deformation gradient in the context of hyperelasticity. A structural tensor-based approach was applied to model the elastic deformation, while a multi-surface based yield criterion was adopted to describe the plastic behavior. The model considers both material densification and internal friction effects, which were observed experimentally. According to the experimental behavior, a quadratic yield locus under pure shear loading was assumed in the model. Finally, the model was validated with a cylinder compression test and found to capture the highly anisotropic, elastic-plastic behavior accurately. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The transport of electrons through the gas diffusion layer (GDL) of polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells has a significant impact on the optimal design and operation of PEM fuel cells and is directly affected by the anisotropic nature of the carbon paper material. In this study, a three-dimensional reconstruction of the GDL is used to numerically estimate the directional dependent effective electrical conductivity of the layer for various porosity values. The distribution of the fibers in the through-plane direction results in high electrical resistivity; hence, decreasing the overall effective electrical conductivity in this direction. This finding is in agreement with measured experimental data. Further, using the numerical results of this study, two mathematical expressions were proposed for the calculation of the effective electrical conductivity of the carbon paper GDL. Finally, the tortuosity factor was evaluated as 1.7 and 3.4 in the in- and through-plane directions, respectively. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) with multi-reflection solid boundary conditions is used to study anisotropic permeabilities of a carbon paper gas diffusion layer (GDL) in a fuel cell. The carbon paper is reconstructed using the stochastic method, in which various porosities and microstructures are achieved to simulate different samples. The simulated permeability and tortuosity show anisotropic characteristics of the reconstructed carbon papers with in-plane permeability higher than through-plane, and in-plane tortuosity lower than through-plane. The calculated permeabilities are in good agreement with existing measurements. The relationship between the permeability and the porosity is fitted with empirical relations and some fitting constants are determined. Furthermore, the obtained relationship of tortuosity and porosity is used in a fractal model for permeabilities. The results indicate that the fractal model and the Kozeny–Carman equation provide similar predictions on the through-plane permeability of the carbon paper GDL. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Experiments and theory for bending wave propagation of paper sheets in tension are presented. An all-electronic pulsed TV holography technique is used to record the bending wave field initiated by a laser pulse. A theory for bending wave propagation in tensile-loaded paper is developed. The bending waves are influenced by mechanical properties such as density, thickness, bending stiffness, anisotropy and also by tensile forces in the paper. The paper stiffnesses are determined by matching the measured deformation field with the calculated theoretical field. The results show that the bending wave pattern is strongly influenced by the tensile force. For a non-destructive on-line measurement of, e.g. stiffnesses and anisotropy in the paper machine the tensile force must be considered. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A novel class of preceramic paper may serve as a preform to manufacture lightweight as well as multilayer ceramic products. In this article, we discuss the formation, microstructure, and properties of preceramic papers and their conversion into ceramic materials. Oxide as well nonoxide ceramics were processed into single-sheet, corrugated structures, and multilayer ceramics. A high filler loading and uniform distribution of ceramic fillers involves control of colloidal surface interaction including electrostatic, electrosteric, and mechanical retention. Sintering of an oxide-loaded preceramic paper in air results in highly porous products, with the porosity shape and distribution templated by the pulp fiber used in papermaking. In the case of carbide-loaded paper, dense composite materials are obtained by reactive infiltration processing. Anisotropic properties of machine-fabricated preceramic paper and bonding interfaces in multilayer stacks give rise to anisotropic mechanical properties of the resulting ceramic composites. Noncatastrophic failure was observed when tensile loading stress was applied parallel to the interfaces (in-plane loading). Applying well-established paper processing technologies, including laminated object manufacturing, ceramic structures of complex shape and size can easily be processed, offering a high potential for economical manufacturing. An ultrasonic system that enables the measurement of paper properties like anisotropy or filler content is fully described in this paper. The system is composed of a measuring head that integrates 16 ultrasonic bimorph circumferentially disposed transducers. The hardware responsible for the emission and the reception tasks is PC controlled by means of an acquisition board and by specifically developed software. The experimental results obtained present a very good agreement with others obtained by classic methods, namely destructive tests, and allow evaluation of paper properties such as tensile stiffness index, tensile stiffness orientation angle, anisotropy and filler content, with good accuracy. We try to assess the validity of assumptions taken when deriving drift velocity. We give simple formulas for characteristics of the spatiotemporal correlation function of the observed diffraction pattern for the frozen flow and the more general Briggs model. Using Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR) Cassiopeia intensity observation, we compare the experimental velocity scaling factor with a theoretical one to show that both models do not follow observations. We also give a qualitative comparison of our drift velocity estimates with SuperDARN convection maps. Space charge behavior is important in the oil-immersed-paper insulation in converter transformers for HVDC transmission. This paper reports an investigation of the space charge property in samples with two layers of oil-immersed-paper and oil. Based on pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) technique, a waveform recovery method was proposed to get rid of the effects of interface and anisotropy on PEA result, and the space charge distributions in the two-layer samples under different voltage and oil thicknesses were measured. It?s found that the charges with the same polarity as oil side electrode were accumulated at the interface and gradually increased with the increase of applied voltage. However, the positive charge charges always appeared in the oil under positive and negative voltages. Moreover, the charges in samples increased with the increase of applied voltage, while the amount of interface charges decreased with the increase of oil thickness. Due to the existence of interfacial charges, the electrical field in oil-immersed-paper was distorted with its maximum close to the interface. It is indicated that due to the different mobility properties of charges in paper and oil and the interface trap state, the interface between paper and oil plays an important role in charge formation and decay. Abstract: A void network model, named Pore-Cor, has been used to study the permeation of an ink solvent into paper coating formulations coated onto a synthetic substrate. The network model generated anisotropic void networks of rectangular cross-sectional pores connected by elliptical cross-sectional throats. These structures had porosities and mercury intrusion properties which closely matched those of the experimental samples. The permeation of hexadecane, used as an analogue for the experimental test oil, was then simulated through these void structures. The simulations were compared to measurements of the permeation of mineral oil into four types of paper coating formulation. The simulations showed that the inertia of the fluid as it enters void features causes a considerable change in wetting over a few milliseconds, a timescale relevant to printing in a modern press. They also showed that in the more anisotropic samples, fast advance wetting occurred through narrow void features. It was found that the match between experimental and simulated wetting could be improved by correcting the simulation for the number of surface throats. The simulations showed a more realistic experimental trend, and much greater preferential flow, than the traditional Lucas–Washburn and effective hydraulic radius approaches. Percolation theory is used to model intrinsic and relative permeabilities as well as tortuosity in anisotropic carbon paper gas diffusion layers (GDL) and compared with existing results from lattice-Boltzmann (LB) simulations and experimental measurements. Although single- and two-phase characteristics of the carbon paper GDL are mainly affected by medium geometrical and topological properties, e.g., pore-size distribution, connectivity, and pore geometry, analyzing capillary pressure curves implies that the pore-size distribution of the carbon paper GDL is very narrow. This suggests that its effect on tortuosity and wetting- and nonwetting-phase relative permeabilities is trivial. However, integrated effects of pore geometry, surface area, connectivity, and tortuosity on intrinsic permeability might be substantial. Universal power laws from percolation theory predict the tortuosity-porosity and relative permeability–saturation curves accurately, indicating both characteristics not affected by the pore-size distribution. Abstract: We have investigated motion of fullerene particles in isotropic and anisotropic dielectric medium for the purpose of application of the particles in electronic paper-like display. The charged particles require higher DC electric field to react in the isotropic silicone oil medium in comparison with anisotropic liquid crystal medium, confirming that the dielectrophoretic force is mainly responsible for the motion of the particles. In addition, we proposed device which can express black, gray and white states with three terminal electrodes by suitable combination of the polarity of applied DC bias field.
