Abstract: This paper investigates the problem of chaos and hyper-chaos control, and proposes a simple adaptive feedback control method for chaos control under a reasonable assumption. In comparison with previous methods, the present control technique is simple both in the form of the controller and its application. Several illustrative examples with numerical simulations are studied by using the results obtained in this paper. Study of examples shows that our control method works very well in chaos control. In a 1966 paper by C.A.B. Smith, the short and long conjunctive sums of games are defined and methods are described for determining the theoretical winner of a game constructed using one type of these sums. Another kind of preconditioners approximating the inverse of a symmetric positive definite matrix was given in Simons and Yao [G. Simons, Y. 's preconditioners and Simons and Yao's are generalized in this paper. These preconditioners are all of low construction cost, which all could be taken as approximate inverse of M-matrices. Numerical experiments of these preconditioners applied with Krylov subspace methods show the effectiveness and performance, which also show that the preconditioners proposed in this paper are better approximate inverse for M-matrices than Simons'. In a paper by J. V. Pereira and the author it was proved that any pencil of plane curves of degree $d>1$ with irreducible generic fiber can have at most five completely reducible fibers although no examples with five such fibers had ever been found. Recently Janis Stipins has proved that if a pencil has a base of $d^2$ points, then it cannot have five completely reducible fibers. In this paper we generalize Stipins' result to arbitrary pencils. We also include into consideration more general special fibers that are the unions of lines and non-reduced curves. These fibers are important for characteristic varieties of hyperplane complements. Abstract: Mixed-level designs have become widely used in the practical experiments. When the levels of some factors are difficult to be changed or controlled, fractional factorial split-plot (FFSP) designs are often used. It is highly to know when a mixed-level FFSP design with resolution III or IV has clear effects. This paper investigates the conditions of a resolution III or IV FFSP design with both two-level and four-level factors to have various clear factorial effects, including two types of main effects and three types of two-factor interaction components. The aim of this paper is to characterize the formal power series which have purely periodic β-expansions in Pisot or Salem unit base under some condition. In this paper, we deal with commutative algebras A satisfying the identity 2β{(xy)2 - x2y2} + γ{((xy)x)y + ((xy)y)x - (y2x)x - (x2y)y} = 0, where β, γ are scalars. These algebras appeared as one of the four families of degree four identities in Carini, Hentzel and Piacentini-Cattaneo [2]. We prove that if the algebra A admits an identity element, then A is associative. We also prove that there exist trace forms on A. Finally, we prove that if A has a non-degenerate trace form, then A satisfies the identity ((yx)x)x = y((xx)x), a generalization of right alternativity. Our results require characteristic ≠ 2, 3. The idea of difference sequence spaces was introduced by Kizmaz [6], and this concept was generalized by Bektas and Colak [1]. Pepin's test provides a necessary and sufficient condition for a Fermat number to be prime. The Lucas-Lehmer test does similarly for a Mersenne number. These tests share a common nature. However, this is evident neither by their usual statements nor their usual treatment in the literature. Furthermore, it is unusual to even find a proof of the latter result in elementary textbooks. Abstract: In this paper, we focus on the computation of stress resultants of a floating elastic plate using the Mindlin plate theory. The proposed method makes use of the linear wave theory and shallow-draft assumption. However, the usual Kirchhoff theory is replaced by the Mindlin theory for the plate. For a single frequency, the coupled water-plate problem is solved using a higher-order-coupled finite element–boundary element method. The solutions for the stress-resultants computed using the proposed method are more satisfactory than these based on the Kirchhoff plate theory. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Disjoint $\mathsf{NP}$ -pairs are a well studied complexity-theoretic concept with important applications in cryptography and propositional proof complexity. In this paper we introduce a natural generalization of the notion of disjoint $\mathsf{NP}$ -pairs to disjoint k-tuples of $\mathsf{NP}$ -sets for k≥2. We define subclasses of the class of all disjoint k-tuples of $\mathsf{NP}$ -sets. These subclasses are associated with a propositional proof system and possess complete tuples which are defined from the proof system. In our main result we show that complete disjoint $\mathsf{NP}$ -pairs exist if and only if complete disjoint k-tuples of $\mathsf{NP}$ -sets exist for all k≥2. Further, this is equivalent to the existence of a propositional proof system in which the disjointness of all k-tuples is shortly provable. The filter generator is an important building block in many stream ciphers. The generator consists of a linear feedback shift register of length n that generates an m-sequence of period 2′ - 1 filtered through a Boolean function of degree d that combines bits from the shift register and creates an output bit zt at any time t. The previous best attacks aimed at reconstructing the initial state from an observed keystream, have essentially reduced the problem to solving a nonlinear system of D = (Multiple line equation(s) cannot be represented in ASCII text) (i) equations in n unknowns using techniques based on linear algebra. This attack needs about D bits of keystream and the system can be solved in complexity O (Dω), where ω can be taken to be Strassen's reduction exponent ω = log2 (7) ≈ 2.807. This paper describes a new algorithm that recovers the initial state of most filter generators after observing O(D) keystream bits with complexity O((D - n)/2) ≈ O(D), after a pre-computation with complexity O(D(log2 D)³). Abstract: Let be a compactification of an affine 3-fold into a smooth projective 3-fold such that the (reduced) boundary divisor is SNC. In this paper, as an affine counterpart to the work due to S. Mori (cf. [S. Mori, Threefolds whose canonical bundles are not numerically effective, Ann. of Math. 116 (1982) 133–176]), we shall classify -negative extremal rays on . A cohesive interface element is presented for the finite element analysis of crack growth in thin specimens. In this work, the traditional cohesive interface model is extended to handle cracks in the context of three-dimensional shell elements. In addition to the traction-displacement law, a bending moment-rotation relation is included to transmit the moment and describe the initiation and propagation of cracks growing through the thickness of the shell elements. Since crack initiation and evolution are a natural outcome of the cohesive zone model without the need of any ad hoc fracture criterion, this model results in automatic prediction of fracture. In particular, this paper will focus on cases involving mode I/III fracture and bending, typical of complex cases existing in industrial applications in which thin-walled structures are subjected to extreme loading conditions (e.g., crashworthiness analysis). This paper is devoted to a study on the way generalized substitutions - a multi-dimensional extension of substitutions - act on multi-dimensional Sturmian sequences. We give a sufficient condition under which these multi-dimensional Sturmian sequences are obtained by iterated compositions of generalized substitutions. This paper presents a fast algorithm for solving the n-queens problem. The basic idea of this algorithm is to use pre-computed solutions in 75% of the cases, while the remaining cases are solved by calling the Sosic's algorithm. The novelty of this algorithm is in the observation that these pre-computable cases exhibit a modular nature. In this paper, we study the existence and limiting behavior of the mountain pass solutions of the elliptic problem $-\Delta u = \lambda f(u-q(x))$ in $\Omega\subset R^2; u= 0$ on $\partial\Omega$, where $q$ is a positive harmonic function. We show that the "vortex core" $A_\lambda=\{x\in\Omega:u_\lambda(x)>q(x)\}$ of the solution $u_\lambda$ shrinks to a global minimum point of $q$ on the boundary $\partial\Omega$ as $\lambda\to+\infty$. Furthermore, we show that for each strict local minimum $x_0$ point of $q(x)$ on the boundary $\partial\Omega$, there exists a solution $u_\lambda$ whose vortex core shrinks to this strict local minimum point $x_0$ as $\lambda\to+\infty$. Abstract: In this paper, we define concepts of crowns and quasi-crowns, valid in an arbitrary schurian algebra, and which generalise the corresponding concepts in an incidence algebra. We show first that a triangular schurian algebra is strongly simply connected if and only if it is simply connected and contains no quasi-crown. In the paper, a new trust region algorithm is given for nonlinear inequality constrained optimization problems. Motivated by a dual problem introduced by Han and Mangasarian [Han, S. P., Mangasarian, O. L. (1983). A dual differentiable exact penalty function. Math. Programming 25:293-306], which is a nonnegatively constrained maximization problem, we construct a trust region algorithm for solving the dual problem. At each iteration, we only need to minimize a quadratic subproblem with simple bound constraints. Under the condition that the iterate sequence generated by the algorithm is contained in some bounded closed set, any accumulation point of the sequence is a Karush- Kuhn-Tucker point of the original problem. Abstract: The scheduling problems studied in this paper concern the two-stage no-wait flowshops with parallel machines under the objective function of the minimization of the maximum completion time. A new heuristic algorithm, i.e., the minimum deviation algorithm, is developed to solve the problems. In order to evaluate the average case performance of the algorithm, we design numerical experiments to compare the effectiveness of the algorithm with that of the other approximation algorithms. Extensive simulations are conducted under different shop conditions, and the results statistically show that the minimum deviation algorithm performs well under most of the situations. We show how the derivation of the Derrida–Lebowitz–Speer–Spohn equation can be prolonged to obtain a new equation, generalizing the models obtained in the paper by these authors. We then investigate its properties from both an analytical and numerical perspective. Specifically, a numerical method is presented to approximate solutions of the prolonged equation.
