According to the 2018 European Plastics Strategy, about 25 M tonnes/y of plastic waste is produced in Europe, but less than 30% is collected for recycling, and only 15% of collected waste gets recycled and makes its way back into products. Chemical recycling technologies can help meet the EU targets on recycling plastics. Improving Europe's recycling capabilities plays an important role in lowering emissions by 55% by 2030, and contributing to EU Green Deal ambitions around circularity and climate neutrality. To get there, more plastic waste needs to be collected, sorted and prepared for recycling, and a wider range of markets need to be supplied with recycled content. Cefic calls for an enabling European policy framework for the scale-up and full deployment of these technologies. According to the Quantis report 'Chemical Recycling: Greenhouse gas emission reduction potential of an emerging waste management route', commissioned by Cefic, chemical recycling technologies can also help in restoring sustainable carbon cycles, lower the dependency on virgin fossil raw materials, and avoid greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that occur in feedstock production and from incineration of plastic waste. To scale up and fully implement chemical recycling, the chemical industry is committed to working under specific guiding principles, such as: increase collaboration to bring more valuable recycled content to the market; generate and collect data to better understand the environmental performance, benefits, and contributions of these technologies, including the conduction of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies; and foster transparency and contribute to the development of uniform standards for a chain of custody mass balance approach, which is included in the chain of custodies models as defined in ISO 22095. Currently, chemically recycled plastics have been used in multiple applications in Europe, from mattresses and food packaging products to refrigerator and cars parts, and an increasing number of industrial pilot- and demonstration plants are in the pipeline. But the full implementation and integration of these technologies involve scale-up innovations, investments, and a solid and enabling European policy framework that can accept and integrate chemical recycling in the reporting of recycling metrics. • VOC emissions were studied for a waste paper and cardboard recycling factory. • VOC concentrations reported for multiple factory sections. • Total HQ for VOCs in recycling processes was more than the acceptable limit. • LTCRs for VOCs in different sites of PCSWRF ranged from 1.21 × 10−4 to 1.05 × 10−5. • Exposure indices of VOCs for residents in PCSWRF exceeded the acceptable limit. Urbanization generates increased amounts of solid wastes in cities and as a consequence leads to high air pollution levels. As a result of these trends, the subject of air quality management for sustainable concept of cities has received increasing attention. This work characterized volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions and health effects at different processing stages in a recycling facility for waste paper and cardboard. The highest total VOC levels were observed in the conveyor belt line one (5.23 ± 0.33 mg/m3), followed by a baling machine (1.38 ± 0.07 mg/m3), conveyor belt line two (1.34 ± 0.08 mg/m3), tipping floor line one (1.22 ± 0.07 mg/m3), and manual separation line one (1.20 ± 0.06 mg/m3). Hence, exposure to VOCs lead to high health risks in this PCSWRF, especially at the manual separation stage (HQ = 2.7–3 and lifetime cancer risks (LTCRs) = 1.11 × 10−4 - 1.03 × 10−4), and strategies such as adjustment of the factory to enclose the conveyors, designing proper ventilation and air conditioning systems, minimization of VOC-contaminated waste generation (pre-treatment), and using personal protective equipment should be considered to eliminate pollutants and to protect workers from the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic effects. Indoor air quality is becoming one of the most important factors for public health, as people tend to spend more time indoors, either at home or at work. This paper combines the use of calibrated low‐cost particulate matter (PM) sensors with source apportionment algorithms to understand the factors that affect the indoor air quality within a typical UK school. Low‐cost optical particle counter (OPC) sensors were placed in three different classrooms within the school, measuring PM concentrations during a typical school week and the subsequent holiday period, to understand the role of occupancy within schools for air quality. When students were in attendance during school hours (09:00–15:30), the classroom with the greatest average PM levels had PM2.5 and PM10 mass concentrations of 14.4 and 51.0 μg/m3, respectively. During school hours, when students were present, all classrooms had average PM2.5 concentrations greater than 8.1 μg m−3 and average PM10 concentrations greater than 13.1 μg m−3. Notably, the English studies classroom exceeded the 24‐h WHO ambient PM10 guideline (45 μg m−3). Employing the non‐negative matrix factorization (NMF) algorithm for source apportionment revealed that between 93% and 98% of PM1 observed within classrooms derived from outdoor sources. This contribution diminished as particle size increased, with outdoor sources accounting for 74%–89% of PM2.5, and 19%–40% of PM10, respectively. The differences in classroom PM concentration and source percentages are attributed to differences in lesson activities, lesson frequency, flooring (carpeted versus hard flooring), location within the school, and proximity to outdoor sources such as roads. The approach described within the paper is easily translated to other indoor locations and could also be straightforwardly scaled due to its relatively low cost.
