Abstract: This paper presents a detailed empirical description of airport connectivities in four major multiple airport cities (London, New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco). Our analysis draws on data derived from a previously largely untapped information source, i.e. the so-called ‘Marketing Information Data Transfer’ (MIDT). This dataset contains information on actually flown transnational routes, which allows for a thorough assessment of the chief connectivity characteristics of specific airports. Combined with information derived from a number of other sources, our results point to functional divisions among airports, both in terms of their geographical scale (e.g. national, regional, and international airports) and their specific role in the airline network (e.g. origin/destination versus hub airports). The implications of the results are discussed, and some avenues for future research are considered. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The article outlines various activities developed by a special education teacher in Yonkers, New York to raise mentally retarded children's interest in aviation. These activities include a study of individuals involved in aviation development such as the Wright Brothers, Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart. Also suggested are additional reading materials, follow-up activities, vocabulary enlargement, films related to aviation, and mathematical concepts. These approaches developed interest in flight, airplanes, pilots, eating on planes, tickets, and the various aspects of plane travel.

The article presents information on the 1910 flight that pilot Glenn Curtiss made from Albany, New York to Manhattan, New York City. The 152 mile flight took Curtiss five hours to complete and the field from which he took off later became the state's first municipal airport. It details how his progress was followed by telegraph as he made his way down the Hudson River and discusses his place in aviation history.

The article analyses the earliest encounters between air travel and city planning in Paris and New York c. 1910. It focuses on the large public air shows, especially those held around 1909. They were spectacular, epoch-defining events that first introduced the aeroplane to the masses and were relayed in the accounts of the illustrated press. Subsequent transformations then took place in city planning debates. By tapping into an imaginary future world as a key actor in transforming the urban landscape alongside other forms of locomotion, the aeroplane inspired new visions of future cities that encapsulated the pressing issues of the day and helped to construct the imagery of this epic narrative. An expression is developed for the landing capacity (or service rate) of a single runway in which aircraft are restricted by a minimum space separation at the beginning of a common approach glide path and by a minimum time separation at the runway. The conditions at any terminal may be inserted to determine its characteristic landing capacity. Single runways at the New York area terminals are shown to have landing capacities of 30-40 landings per hour. It is shown that the greatest improvement in the present landing rate can be achieved by reducing the separation at the beginning of the common path, and that little is gained by reducing only the time separation at the runway.
