Search

The locations of Ly-$\alpha$ emitting galaxies (LAEs) at the end of the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) are expected to correlate with regions of ionised hydrogen, traced by the redshifted 21~cm hyperfine line. Mapping the neutral hydrogen around regions with detected and localised LAEs offers an avenue to constrain the brightness temperature of the Universe within the EoR by providing an expectation for the spatial distribution of the gas, thereby providing prior information unavailable to power spectrum measurements. We use a test set of 12 hours of observations from the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) in extended array configuration, to constrain the neutral hydrogen signature of 58 LAEs, detected with the Subaru Hypersuprime Cam in the \textit{Silverrush} survey, centred on $z$=6.58. We assume that detectable emitters reside in the centre of ionised HII bubbles during the end of reionization, and predict the redshifted neutral hydrogen signal corresponding to the remaining neutral regions using a set of different ionised bubble radii. A prewhitening matched filter detector is introduced to assess detectability. We demonstrate the ability to detect, or place limits upon, the amplitude of brightness temperature fluctuations, and the characteristic HII bubble size. Dark Matter (DM) halos with masses below $\sim10^{8}$ $M_{\odot}$, which would help to discriminate between DM models, may be detected through their gravitational effect on distant sources. The same applies to primordial black holes, considered as an alternative scenario to DM particle models. However, there is still no evidence for the existence of such objects. With the aim of finding compact objects in the mass range $\sim$ 10$^{6}$ -- 10$^{9}$$M_{\odot}$, we search for strong gravitational lenses on milli (mas)-arcseconds scales (< 150 mas). For our search, we used the Astrogeo VLBI FITS image database -- the largest publicly available database, containing multi-frequency VLBI data of 13828 individual sources. We used the citizen science approach to visually inspect all sources in all available frequencies in search for images with multiple compact components on mas-scales. At the final stage, sources were excluded based on the surface brightness preservation criterion. We obtained a sample of 40 sources that passed all steps and therefore are judged to be milli-arcsecond lens candidates. These sources are currently followed-up with on-going European VLBI Network (EVN) observations at 5 and 22 GHz. In this work, we use the {\sc astraeus} (seminumerical rAdiative tranSfer coupling of galaxy formaTion and Reionization in N-body dArk mattEr simUlationS) framework which couples galaxy formation and reionization in the first billion years. Exploring a number of models for reionization feedback and the escape fraction of ionizing radiation from the galactic environment ($f_\mathrm{esc}$), we quantify how the contribution of star-forming galaxies {(with halo masses $M_h>10^{8.2}$M$_\odot$)} to reionization depends on the radiative feedback model, $f_\mathrm{esc}$, and the environmental over-density. Our key findings are: (i) for constant $f_\mathrm{esc}$ models, intermediate-mass galaxies (with halo masses of $M_h\simeq10^{9-11}$M$_\odot$ and absolute UV magnitudes of $M_{UV} \sim -15$ to $-20$) in intermediate-density regions drive reionization; (ii) scenarios where $f_\mathrm{esc}$ increases with decreasing halo mass shift the galaxy population driving reionization to lower-mass galaxies ($M_h\lesssim10^{9.5}$M$_\odot$) with lower luminosities ($M_{UV} \gtrsim-16$) and over-densities; (iii) reionization imprints its topology on the ionizing emissivity of low-mass galaxies ($M_h\lesssim10^{9}$M$_\odot$) through radiative feedback. Low-mass galaxies experience a stronger suppression of star formation by radiative feedback and show lower ionizing emissivities in over-dense regions; (iv) a change in $f_\mathrm{esc}$ with galaxy properties has the largest impact on the sources of reionization and their detectability, with the radiative feedback strength and environmental over-density playing a sub-dominant role; (v) JWST-surveys (with a limiting magnitude of $M_{UV} = -16$) will be able to detect the galaxies providing $\sim 60-70\%$ ($\sim 10\%$) of reionization photons at $z=7$ for constant $f_\mathrm{esc}$ models (scenarios where $f_\mathrm{esc}$ increases with decreasing halo mass)., 14 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the discovery of an intrinsically faint, quintuply-imaged, dusty galaxy MACS0600-z6 at a redshift $z=$6.07 viewed through the cluster MACSJ0600.1-2008 ($z$=0.46). A $\simeq4\sigma$ dust detection is seen at 1.2mm as part of the ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey (ALCS), an on-going ALMA Large program, and the redshift is secured via [C II] 158 $\mu$m emission described in a companion paper. In addition, spectroscopic follow-up with GMOS/Gemini-North shows a break in the galaxy's spectrum, consistent with the Lyman break at that redshift. We use a detailed mass model of the cluster and infer a magnification $\mu\gtrsim$30 for the most magnified image of this galaxy, which provides an unprecedented opportunity to probe the physical properties of a sub-luminous galaxy at the end of cosmic reionisation. Based on the spectral energy distribution, we infer lensing-corrected stellar and dust masses of $\rm{2.9^{+11.5}_{-2.3}\times10^9}$ and $\rm{4.8^{+4.5}_{-3.4}\times10^6}$ $\rm{M_{\odot}}$ respectively, a star formation rate of $\rm{9.7^{+22.0}_{-6.6} M_{\odot} yr^{-1}}$, an intrinsic size of $\rm{0.54^{+0.26}_{-0.14}}$ kpc, and a luminosity-weighted age of 200$\pm$100 Myr. Strikingly, the dust production rate in this relatively young galaxy appears to be larger than that observed for equivalent, lower redshift sources. Observations of non-random distribution of galaxies with opposite spin directions have recently attracted considerable attention. Here, a method for identifying cosine-dependence in a dataset of galaxies annotated by their spin directions is described in the light of different aspects that can impact the statistical analysis of the data. These aspects include the presence of duplicate objects in a dataset, errors in the galaxy annotation process, and non-random distribution of the asymmetry that does not necessarily form a dipole or quadrupole axes. The results show that duplicate objects in the dataset can artificially increase the likelihood of cosine dependence detected in the data, but a very high number of duplicate objects is required to lead to a false detection of an axis. Inaccuracy in galaxy annotations has relatively minor impact on the identification of cosine dependence when the error is randomly distributed between clockwise and counterclockwise galaxies. However, when the error is not random, even a small bias of 1% leads to a statistically significant cosine dependence that peaks at the celestial pole. Experiments with artificial datasets in which the distribution was not random showed strong cosine dependence even when the data did not form a full dipole axis alignment. Using the latest upper limits on the 21-cm power spectrum at $z\approx9.1$ from the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR), we explore regions of parameter space which are inconsistent with the data. We use 21CMMC, a Monte Carlo Markov Chain sampler of 21cmFAST which directly forward models the 3D cosmic 21-cm signal in a fully Bayesian framework. We use the astrophysical parameterisation from 21cmFAST, which includes mass-dependent star formation rates and ionising escape fractions as well as soft-band X-ray luminosities to place limits on the properties of the high-$z$ galaxies. Further, we connect the disfavoured regions of parameter space with existing observational constraints on the Epoch of Reionisation such as ultra-violet (UV) luminosity functions, background UV photoionisation rate, intergalactic medium (IGM) neutral fraction and the electron scattering optical depth. We find that all models exceeding the 21-cm signal limits set by LOFAR at $z\approx9.1$ are excluded at $\gtrsim2\sigma$ by other probes. Finally, we place limits on the IGM spin temperature from LOFAR, disfavouring at 95 per cent confidence spin temperatures below $\sim2.6$ K across an IGM neutral fraction range of $0.15 \lesssim \bar{x}_{H{\scriptscriptstyle I}} \lesssim 0.6$. Note, these limits are only obtained from 141 hrs of data in a single redshift bin. With tighter upper limits, across multiple redshift bins expected in the near future from LOFAR, more viable models will be ruled out. Our approach demonstrates the potential of forward modelling tools such as 21CMMC in combining 21-cm observations with other high-$z$ probes to constrain the astrophysics of galaxies., Comment: 12 pages, 4 pages, 1 table. The 21-cm absorption feature reported by the EDGES collaboration is several times stronger than that predicted by traditional astrophysical models. If genuine, a deeper absorption may lead to stronger fluctuations on the 21-cm signal on degree scales (up to 1~Kelvin in rms), allowing these fluctuations to be detectable in nearly 50~times shorter integration times compared to previous predictions. We commenced the "AARTFAAC Cosmic Explorer" (ACE) program, that employs the AARTFAAC wide-field imager, to measure or set limits on the power spectrum of the 21-cm fluctuations in the redshift range $z = 17.9-18.6$ ($\Delta\nu = 72.36-75.09$~MHz) corresponding to the deep part of the EDGES absorption feature. Here, we present first results from two LST bins: 23.5-23.75h and 23.5-23.75h, each with 2~h of data, recorded in `semi drift-scan' mode. We demonstrate the application of the new ACE data-processing pipeline (adapted from the LOFAR-EoR pipeline) on the AARTFAAC data. We observe that noise estimates from the channel and time-differenced Stokes~$V$ visibilities agree with each other. After 2~h of integration and subtraction of bright foregrounds, we obtain $2\sigma$ upper limits on the 21-cm power spectrum of $\Delta_{21}^2 < (8139~\textrm{mK})^2$ and $\Delta_{21}^2 < (8549~\textrm{mK})^2$ at $k = 0.144~h\,\textrm{cMpc}^{-1}$ for the two LST bins. Incoherently averaging the noise bias-corrected power spectra for the two LST bins yields an upper limit of $\Delta_{21}^2 < (7388~\textrm{mK})^2$ at $k = 0.144~h\,\textrm{cMpc}^{-1}$. The ARCADE2 and LWA1 experiments have claimed an excess over the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) at low radio frequencies. If the cosmological high-redshift contribution to this radio background is between 0.1% and 22% of the CMB at 1.42 GHz, it could explain the tentative EDGES Low-Band detection of the anomalously deep absorption in the 21-cm signal of neutral hydrogen. We use the upper limit on the 21-cm signal from the Epoch of Reionization ($z=9.1$) based on 141 hours of observations with LOFAR to evaluate the contribution of the high redshift Universe to the detected radio background. Marginalizing over astrophysical properties of star-forming halos, we find (at 95% C.L.) that the cosmological radio background can be at most 9.6% of the CMB at 1.42 GHz. This limit rules out strong contribution of the high-redshift Universe to the ARCADE2 and LWA1 measurements. Even though LOFAR places limit on the extra radio background, excess of $0.1-9.6$% over the CMB (at 1.42 GHz) is still allowed and could explain the EDGES Low-Band detection. We also constrain the thermal and ionization state of the gas at $z = 9.1$ and put limits on the properties of the first star-forming objects. We find that, in agreement with the limits from EDGES High-Band data, LOFAR data constrain scenarios with inefficient X-ray sources and cases where the Universe was ionized by stars in massive halos only., Published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (MNRAS). We present the lens mass model of the quadruply-imaged gravitationally lensed quasar WFI2033-4723, and perform a blind cosmographical analysis based on this system. Our analysis combines (1) time-delay measurements from 14 years of data obtained by the COSmological MOnitoring of GRAvItational Lenses (COSMOGRAIL) collaboration, (2) high-resolution $\textit{Hubble Space Telescope}$ imaging, (3) a measurement of the velocity dispersion of the lens galaxy based on ESO-MUSE data, and (4) multi-band, wide-field imaging and spectroscopy characterizing the lens environment. We account for all known sources of systematics, including the influence of nearby perturbers and complex line-of-sight structure, as well as the parametrization of the light and mass profiles of the lensing galaxy. After unblinding, we determine the effective time-delay distance to be $4784_{-248}^{+399}~\mathrm{Mpc}$, an average precision of $6.6\%$. This translates to a Hubble constant $H_{0} = 71.6_{-4.9}^{+3.8}~\mathrm{km~s^{-1}~Mpc^{-1}}$, assuming a flat $\Lambda$CDM cosmology with a uniform prior on $\Omega_\mathrm{m}$ in the range [0.05, 0.5]. Euclid Consortium: N. Hamaus et al., Euclid is poised to survey galaxies across a cosmological volume of unprecedented size, providing observations of more than a billion objects distributed over a third of the full sky. Approximately 20 million of these galaxies will have their spectroscopy available, allowing us to map the three-dimensional large-scale structure of the Universe in great detail. This paper investigates prospects for the detection of cosmic voids therein and the unique benefit they provide for cosmological studies. In particular, we study the imprints of dynamic (redshift-space) and geometric (Alcock–Paczynski) distortions of average void shapes and their constraining power on the growth of structure and cosmological distance ratios. To this end, we made use of the Flagship mock catalog, a state-of-the-art simulation of the data expected to be observed with Euclid. We arranged the data into four adjacent redshift bins, each of which contains about 11 000 voids and we estimated the stacked void-galaxy cross-correlation function in every bin. Fitting a linear-theory model to the data, we obtained constraints on f/b and DMH, where f is the linear growth rate of density fluctuations, b the galaxy bias, DM the comoving angular diameter distance, and H the Hubble rate. In addition, we marginalized over two nuisance parameters included in our model to account for unknown systematic effects in the analysis. With this approach, Euclid will be able to reach a relative precision of about 4% on measurements of f/b and 0.5% on DMH in each redshift bin. Better modeling or calibration of the nuisance parameters may further increase this precision to 1% and 0.4%, respectively. Our results show that the exploitation of cosmic voids in Euclid will provide competitive constraints on cosmology even as a stand-alone probe. We present the forward cosmological analysis of an $XMM$ selected sample of galaxy clusters out to a redshift of unity. Following our previous 2018 study based on the dn/dz quantity alone, we perform an upgraded cosmological analysis of the same XXL C1 cluster catalogue (178 objects), with a detailed account of the systematic errors. We follow the ASpiX methodology: the distribution of the observed X-ray properties of the cluster population is analysed in a 3D observable space (count rate, hardness ratio, redshift) and modelled as a function of cosmology. Compared to more traditional methods, ASpiX allows the inclusion of clusters down to a few tens of photons. We obtain an improvement by a factor of 2 compared to the previous analysis by letting the normalisation of the M-T relation and the evolution of the L-T relation free. Adding constraints from the XXL cluster 2-point correlation function and the BAO from various surveys decreases the uncertainties by 23 and 53 % respectively, and 62% when adding both. Switching to the scaling relations from the Subaru analysis, and letting free more parameters, our final constraints are $\sigma_8$ = $0.99^{+0.14}_{-0.23}$, $\Omega_m$ = 0.296 $\pm$ 0.034 ($S_8 = 0.98^{+0.11}_{-0.21}$) for the XXL sample alone. Finally, we combine XXL ASpiX, the XXL cluster 2-point correlation function and the BAO, with 11 free parameters, allowing for the cosmological dependence of the scaling relations in the fit. We find $\sigma_8$ = $0.793^{+0.063}_{-0.12}$, $\Omega_m$ = 0.364 $\pm$ 0.015 ($S_8 = 0.872^{+0.068}_{-0.12}$), but still compatible with Planck CMB at 2.2$\sigma$. The results obtained by the ASpiX method are promising; further improvement is expected from the final XXL cosmological analysis involving a cluster sample twice as large. We present wideband (1 − 6.5 GHz) polarimetric observations, obtained with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, of the merging galaxy cluster MACS J0717.5+3745, which hosts one of the most complex known radio relic and halo systems. We used both rotation measure synthesis and QU-fitting to find a reasonable agreement of the results obtained with these methods, particularly when the Faraday distribution is simple and the depolarization is mild. The relic is highly polarized over its entire length (850 kpc), reaching a fractional polarization > 30% in some regions. We also observe a strong wavelength-dependent depolarization for some regions of the relic. The northern part of the relic shows a complex Faraday distribution, suggesting that this region is located in or behind the intracluster medium (ICM). Conversely, the southern part of the relic shows a rotation measure very close to the Galactic foreground, with a rather low Faraday dispersion, indicating very little magnetoionic material intervening along the line of sight. Based on a spatially resolved polarization analysis, we find that the scatter of Faraday depths is correlated with the depolarization, indicating that the tangled magnetic field in the ICM causes the depolarization. We conclude that the ICM magnetic field could be highly turbulent. At the position of a well known narrow-angle-tailed galaxy (NAT), we find evidence of two components that are clearly separated in the Faraday space. The high Faraday dispersion component seems to be associated with the NAT, suggesting the NAT is embedded in the ICM while the southern part of the relic lies in front of it. If true, this implies that the relic and this radio galaxy are not necessarily physically connected and, thus, the relic may, in fact, not be powered by the shock re-acceleration of fossil electrons from the NAT. The magnetic field orientation follows the relic structure indicating a well-ordered magnetic field. We also detected polarized emission in the halo region; however, the absence of significant Faraday rotation and a low value of Faraday dispersion suggests the polarized emission that was previously considered as the part of the halo does, in fact, originate from the shock(s).

DES Collaboration: N. MacCrann et al., As the statistical power of galaxy weak lensing reaches per cent level precision, large, realistic, and robust simulations are required to calibrate observational systematics, especially given the increased importance of object blending as survey depths increase. To capture the coupled effects of blending in both shear and photometric redshift calibration, we define the effective redshift distribution for lensing, nγ(z), and describe how to estimate it using image simulations. We use an extensive suite of tailored image simulations to characterize the performance of the shear estimation pipeline applied to the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Year 3 data set. We describe the multiband, multi-epoch simulations, and demonstrate their high level of realism through comparisons to the real DES data. We isolate the effects that generate shear calibration biases by running variations on our fiducial simulation, and find that blending-related effects are the dominant contribution to the mean multiplicative bias of approximately −2 per cent ⁠. By generating simulations with input shear signals that vary with redshift, we calibrate biases in our estimation of the effective redshift distribution, and demonstrate the importance of this approach when blending is present. DES Collaboration: T. M. C. Abbott et al., We present the first cosmology results from large-scale structure using the full 5000 deg2 of imaging data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Data Release 1. We perform an analysis of large-scale structure combining three two-point correlation functions (3×2pt): (i) cosmic shear using 100 million source galaxies, (ii) galaxy clustering, and (iii) the cross-correlation of source galaxy shear with lens galaxy positions, galaxy–galaxy lensing. To achieve the cosmological precision enabled by these measurements has required updates to nearly every part of the analysis from DES Year 1, including the use of two independent galaxy clustering samples, modeling advances, and several novel improvements in the calibration of gravitational shear and photometric redshift inference. The analysis was performed under strict conditions to mitigate confirmation or observer bias; we describe specific changes made to the lens galaxy sample following unblinding of the results and tests of the robustness of our results to this decision. We model the data within the flat ΛCDM and wCDM cosmological models, marginalizing over 25 nuisance parameters. We find consistent cosmological results between the three two-point correlation functions; their combination yields clustering amplitude S8=0.776+0.017−0.017 and matter density Ωm=0.339+0.032−0.031 in ΛCDM, mean with 68% confidence limits; S8=0.775+0.026−0.024, Ωm=0.352+0.035−0.041, and dark energy equation-of-state parameter w=−0.98+0.32−0.20 in wCDM. These constraints correspond to an improvement in signal-to-noise of the DES Year 3 3×2pt data relative to DES Year 1 by a factor of 2.1, about 20% more than expected from the increase in observing area alone. This combination of DES data is consistent with the prediction of the model favored by the Planck 2018 cosmic microwave background (CMB) primary anisotropy data, which is quantified with a probability-to-exceed p=0.13–0.48. We find better agreement between DES 3×2pt and Planck than in DES Y1, despite the significantly improved precision of both. When combining DES 3×2pt data with available baryon acoustic oscillation, redshift-space distortion, and type Ia supernovae data, we find p=0.34. We present BlendHunter, a proof-of-concept for a deep transfer learning based approach for the automated and robust identification of blended sources in galaxy survey data. We take the VGG-16 network with pre-trained convolutional layers and train the fully connected layers on parametric models of COSMOS images. We test the efficacy of the transfer learning by taking the weights learned on the parametric models and using them to identify blends in more realistic CFIS-like images. We compare the performance of this method to SEP (a Python implementation of SExtractor) as function of noise level and the separation between sources. We find that BlendHunter outperforms SEP by $\sim 15\%$ in terms of classification accuracy for close blends ($, 9 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

DES collaboration: et al., The DMASS sample is a photometric sample from the DES Year 1 data set designed to replicate the properties of the CMASS sample from BOSS, in support of a joint analysis of DES and BOSS beyond the small overlapping area. In this paper, we present the measurement of galaxy–galaxy lensing using the DMASS sample as gravitational lenses in the DES Y1 imaging data. We test a number of potential systematics that can bias the galaxy–galaxy lensing signal, including those from shear estimation, photometric redshifts, and observing conditions. After careful systematic tests, we obtain a highly significant detection of the galaxy–galaxy lensing signal, with total S/N = 25.7. With the measured signal, we assess the feasibility of using DMASS as gravitational lenses equivalent to CMASS, by estimating the galaxy-matter cross-correlation coefficient rcc. By jointly fitting the galaxy–galaxy lensing measurement with the galaxy clustering measurement from CMASS, we obtain rcc=1.09+0.12−0.11 for the scale cut of 4h−1Mpc and rcc=1.06+0.13−0.12 for 12h−1Mpc in fixed cosmology. By adding the angular galaxy clustering of DMASS, we obtain rcc = 1.06 ± 0.10 for the scale cut of 4h−1Mpc and rcc = 1.03 ± 0.11 for 12h−1Mpc⁠. The resulting values of rcc indicate that the lensing signal of DMASS is statistically consistent with the one that would have been measured if CMASS had populated the DES region within the given statistical uncertainty. Previous observations of a large number of galaxies show differences between the photometry of spiral galaxies with clockwise spin patterns and spiral galaxies with counterclockwise spin patterns. In this study the mean magnitude of a large number of clockwise galaxies is compared to the mean magnitude of a large number of counterclockwise galaxies. The observed difference between clockwise and counterclockwise spiral galaxies imaged by the space-based COSMOS survey is compared to the differences between clockwise and counterclockwise galaxies imaged by the Earth-based SDSS and Pan-STARRS around the same field. The annotation of clockwise and counterclockwise galaxies is a fully automatic process that does not involve human intervention, and in all experiments both clockwise and counterclockwise galaxies are separated from the same fields. The comparison shows that the same asymmetry was identified by all three telescopes, providing strong evidence that the rotation direction of a spiral galaxy is linked to its luminosity as measured from Earth. Analysis of the luminosity difference using a large number of galaxies from different parts of the sky shows that the difference between clockwise and counterclockwise galaxies changes with the direction of observation, and oriented around an axis., Comment: Open Astronomy, accepted

Abiotic emergence of ordered information stored in the form of RNA is an important unresolved problem concerning the origin of life. A polymer longer than 40--100 nucleotides is necessary to expect a self-replicating activity, but the formation of such a long polymer having a correct nucleotide sequence by random reactions seems statistically unlikely. However, our universe, created by a single inflation event, likely includes more than $10^{100}$ Sun-like stars. If life can emerge at least once in such a large volume, it is not in contradiction with our observations of life on Earth, even if the expected number of abiogenesis events is negligibly small within the observable universe that contains only $10^{22}$ stars. Here, a quantitative relation is derived between the minimum RNA length $l_{\min}$ required to be the first biological polymer, and the universe size necessary to expect the formation of such a long and active RNA by randomly adding monomers. It is then shown that an active RNA can indeed be produced somewhere in an inflationary universe, giving a solution to the abiotic polymerization problem. On the other hand, $l_{\min}$ must be shorter than $\sim$20 nucleotides for the abiogenesis probability close to unity on a terrestrial planet, but a self-replicating activity is not expected for such a short RNA. Therefore, if extraterrestrial organisms of a different origin from those on Earth are discovered in the future, it would imply an unknown mechanism at work to polymerize nucleotides much faster than random statistical processes., Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure. matches the published version from Scientific Reports

Interferometry of the cosmic 21-cm signal is set to revolutionise our understanding of the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) and the Cosmic Dawn (CD). The culmination of ongoing efforts will be the upcoming Square Kilometre Array (SKA), which will provide tomography of the 21-cm signal from the first billion years of our Universe. Using a galaxy formation model informed by high-$z$ luminosity functions, here we forecast the accuracy with which the first phase of SKA-low (SKA1-low) can constrain the properties of the unseen galaxies driving the astrophysics of the EoR and CD. We consider three observing strategies: (i) deep (1000h on a single field); (ii) medium-deep (100hr on 10 independent fields); and (iii) shallow (10hr on 100 independent fields). Using the 21-cm power spectrum as a summary statistic, and conservatively only using the 21-cm signal above the foreground wedge, we predict that all three observing strategies should recover astrophysical parameters to a fractional precision of $\sim 0.1$ -- 10 per cent. The reionisation history is recovered to an uncertainty of $\Delta z \lesssim 0.1$ (1$\sigma$) for the bulk of its duration. The medium-deep strategy, balancing thermal noise against cosmic variance, results in the tightest constraints, slightly outperforming the deep strategy. The shallow observational strategy performs the worst, with up to a $\sim 10$ -- 60 per cent increase in the recovered uncertainty. The SDSS-IV Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) program has been operating from 2014-2020, and has now observed a sample of 9,269 galaxies in the low redshift universe (z ~ 0.05) with integral-field spectroscopy. With rest-optical (\lambda\lambda 0.36 - 1.0 um) spectral resolution R ~ 2000 the instrumental spectral line-spread function (LSF) typically has 1sigma width of about 70 km/s, which poses a challenge for the study of the typically 20-30 km/s velocity dispersion of the ionized gas in present-day disk galaxies. In this contribution, we present a major revision of the MaNGA data pipeline architecture, focusing particularly on a variety of factors impacting the effective LSF (e.g., undersampling, spectral rectification, and data cube construction). Through comparison with external assessments of the MaNGA data provided by substantially higher-resolution R ~ 10,000 instruments we demonstrate that the revised MPL-10 pipeline measures the instrumental line spread function sufficiently accurately ( 50. Velocity dispersions derived from [O II], Hbeta, [O III], [N II], and [S II] are consistent with those derived from Halpha to within about 2% at sigma_Halpha > 30 km/s. We use the SPHINX suite of high-resolution cosmological radiation hydrodynamics simulations to study how spatially and temporally inhomogeneous reionization impacts the baryonic content of dwarf galaxies and cosmic filaments. The SPHINX simulations simultaneously model an inhomogeneous reionization, follow the escape of ionising radiation from thousands of galaxies, and resolve haloes well below the atomic cooling threshold. This makes them an ideal tool for examining how reionization impacts star formation and the gas content of dwarf galaxies. We compare simulations with and without stellar radiation to isolate the effects of radiation feedback from that of supernova, cosmic expansion, and numerical resolution. We find that the gas content of cosmic filaments can be reduced by more than 80% following reionization. The gas inflow rates into haloes with $M_{vir}3$ at fixed mass. Finally, although the gas content of high-redshift dwarf galaxies is significantly impacted by reionization, we find that most haloes with $M_{vir}, 21 pages, 11 figures, MNRAS Accepted

The intrinsic correlations of galaxy shapes and orientations across the large-scale structure of the Universe are a known contaminant to weak gravitational lensing. They are known to be dependent on galaxy properties, such as their mass and morphologies. The complex interplay between alignments and the physical processes that drive galaxy evolution remains vastly unexplored. We assess the sensitivity of intrinsic alignments (shapes and angular momenta) to Active Galactic Nuclei -AGN- feedback by comparing galaxy alignment in twin runs of the cosmological hydrodynamical Horizon simulation, which do and do not include AGN feedback respectively. We measure intrinsic alignments in three dimensions and in projection at z=0 and z=1. We find that the projected alignment signal of all galaxies with resolved shapes with respect to the density field in the simulation is robust to AGN feedback, thus giving similar predictions for contamination to weak lensing. The relative alignment of galaxy shapes around galaxy positions is however significantly impacted, especially when considering high-mass ellipsoids. Using a sample of galaxy "twins" across simulations, we determine that AGN changes both the galaxy selection and their actual alignments. Finally, we measure the alignments of angular momenta of galaxies with their nearest filament. The interpretation of cosmological observations relies on a notion of an average Universe, which is usually considered as the homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann-Lema\^itre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) model. However, inhomogeneities may statistically bias the observational averages with respect to FLRW, notably for distance measurements, due to a number of effects such as gravitational lensing and redshift perturbations. In this article, we review the main known theoretical results on average distance measures in cosmology, based on second-order perturbation theory, and we fill in some of their gaps. We then comprehensively test these theoretical predictions against ray tracing in a high-resolution dark-matter $N$-body simulation. This method allows us to describe the effect of small-scale inhomogeneities deep into the non-linear regime of structure formation on light propagation up to $z=10$. We find that numerical results are in remarkably good agreement with theoretical predictions in the limit of super-sample variance. No unexpectedly large bias originates from very small scales, whose effect is fully encoded in the non-linear power spectrum. Specifically, the directional average of the inverse amplification and the source-averaged amplification are compatible with unity; the change in area of surfaces of constant cosmic time is compatible with zero; the biases on other distance measures, which can reach slightly less than $1\%$ at high redshift, are well understood. Pocino, A., et al. (Euclid Collaboration), Photometric redshifts (photo-zs) are one of the main ingredients in the analysis of cosmological probes. Their accuracy particularly affects the results of the analyses of galaxy clustering with photometrically selected galaxies (GCph) and weak lensing. In the next decade, space missions such as Euclid will collect precise and accurate photometric measurements for millions of galaxies. These data should be complemented with upcoming ground-based observations to derive precise and accurate photo-zs. In this article we explore how the tomographic redshift binning and depth of ground-based observations will affect the cosmological constraints expected from the Euclid mission. We focus on GCph and extend the study to include galaxy-galaxy lensing (GGL). We add a layer of complexity to the analysis by simulating several realistic photo-z distributions based on the Euclid Consortium Flagship simulation and using a machine learning photo-z algorithm. We then use the Fisher matrix formalism together with these galaxy samples to study the cosmological constraining power as a function of redshift binning, survey depth, and photo-z accuracy. We find that bins with an equal width in redshift provide a higher figure of merit (FoM) than equipopulated bins and that increasing the number of redshift bins from ten to 13 improves the FoM by 35% and 15% for GCph and its combination with GGL, respectively. For GCph, an increase in the survey depth provides a higher FoM. However, when we include faint galaxies beyond the limit of the spectroscopic training data, the resulting FoM decreases because of the spurious photo-zs. When combining GCph and GGL, the number density of the sample, which is set by the survey depth, is the main factor driving the variations in the FoM. Adding galaxies at faint magnitudes and high redshift increases the FoM, even when they are beyond the spectroscopic limit, since the number density increase compensates for the photo-z degradation in this case. We conclude that there is more information that can be extracted beyond the nominal ten tomographic redshift bins of Euclid and that we should be cautious when adding faint galaxies into our sample since they can degrade the cosmological constraints.

We aim to study how the orbits of galaxies in clusters depend on the prominence of the corresponding central galaxies. We divided our data set of $\sim$ 100 clusters and groups into four samples based on their magnitude gap between the two brightest members, $\Delta m_{12}$. We then stacked all the systems in each sample, in order to create four stacked clusters, and derive the mass and velocity anisotropy profiles for the four groups of clusters using the MAMPOSSt procedure. Once the mass profile is known, we also obtain the (non parametric) velocity anisotropy profile via the inversion of the Jeans equation. In systems with the largest $\Delta m_{12}$, galaxy orbits are prevalently radial, except near the centre, where orbits are isotropic (or tangential when also the central galaxies are considered in the analysis). In the other three samples with smaller $\Delta m_{12}$, galaxy orbits are isotropic or only mildly radial. Advances in upcoming weak lensing surveys pose new challenges for an accurate modeling of the lensing observables. The wide sky coverage of Euclid makes angular scales down to $l_\mathrm{min}=10$ accessible. At such large angular scales, general relativistic effects manifest themselves, and the lensing magnification cannot be correctly described by the standard lensing convergence only. The impact of line-of-sight velocities on the magnification angular power spectrum, referred to as the Doppler magnification, is already well recognized in literature. In particular, it was suggested that the Doppler magnification could be extracted by measurements of both cosmic shear and magnification. In this work, we point out two previously neglected aspects with respect to this method. Firstly, the impact of the Doppler magnification is reduced through non-vanishing cross terms with the standard lensing convergence. This is particularly relevant when the sources are averaged over a bin of width $\Delta z\approx 0.1$, such as in Euclid's tomographic weak lensing survey. Secondly, general relativistic potential terms slightly enhance the signal. How rare are extreme-spin primordial black holes? We show how, from an underlying distribution of PBH spin, extreme-value statistics can be used to quantify the rarity of spinning PBHs with Kerr parameter close to 1. Using the Peaks-Over-Threshold method, we show how the probability that a PBH forms with spin exceeding a sufficiently high threshold can be calculated using the Generalised Pareto Distribution. This allows us to estimate the average number of PBHs amongst which we can find a single PBH which formed with spin exceeding a high threshold. We found that the primordial spin distribution gives rise to exceedingly rare near-extremal spin PBHs at formation time: for typical parameter values, roughly up to one in a hundred million PBHs would be formed with spin exceeding the Thorne limit. We discuss conditions under which even more extreme-spin PBHs may be produced, including modifying the skewness and kurtosis of the spin distribution via a smooth transformation. We deduce from our calculations that, if indeed asteroid-mass PBHs above the current observational limit on evaporating PBHs of mass ~10^{17} g contribute significantly to the dark matter, it is likely that some of them could be near-extremal PBHs., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures. We constrain the luminosity and redshift dependence of the intrinsic alignment (IA) of a nearly volume-limited sample of luminous red galaxies selected from the fourth public data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-1000). To measure the shapes of the galaxies, we used two complementary algorithms, finding consistent IA measurements for the overlapping galaxy sample. The global significance of IA detection across our two independent luminous red galaxy samples, with our favoured method of shape estimation, is $\sim10.7\sigma$. Filaments and clusters of the cosmic web have an impact on the properties of galaxies, switching off their star-formation, contributing to the build-up of their stellar mass, and influencing the acquisition of their angular momentum. In this work we make use of the IllustrisTNG simulation, coupled with the DisPerSE cosmic web extraction algorithm, to test which is the galaxy property most affected by the cosmic web and, conversely, to assess the differential impact of the various cosmic web features on a given galaxy property. Our aim is to use this information to better understand galaxy evolution and to identify on which galaxy property future efforts should focus to detect the cosmic web from the galaxy distribution. We provide a comprehensive analysis of the relation between galaxy properties and cosmic web features. We also perform extensive tests in which we try to disentangle the effect of local overdensities of galaxies on their properties from the effect of the large scale structure environment. Our results show that star-formation is the quantity that shows the strongest variation with the distances from the cosmic web features, but it is also the one that shows the strongest relation to the local environment of galaxies. On the other hand, the direction of the angular momentum of galaxies is the property that shows the weakest trends with distance from cosmic web features, while also being more independent from the local environment of galaxies. We conclude that the direction of the angular momentum of galaxies and its use to improve our detection of the cosmic web features could be the focus of futures studies benefiting from larger statistical samples., Updated version to match the one accepted for publication in A&A

We present arcminute-resolution intensity and polarization maps of the Galactic center made with the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). The maps cover a 32 deg$^2$ field at 98, 150, and 224 GHz with $\vert l\vert\le4^\circ$, $\vert b\vert\le2^\circ$. We combine these data with Planck observations at similar frequencies to create coadded maps with increased sensitivity at large angular scales. With the coadded maps, we are able to resolve many known features of the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) in both total intensity and polarization. We map the orientation of the plane-of-sky component of the Galactic magnetic field inferred from the polarization angle in the CMZ, finding significant changes in morphology in the three frequency bands as the underlying dominant emission mechanism changes from synchrotron to dust emission. Selected Galactic center sources, including Sgr A*, the Brick molecular cloud (G0.253+0.016), the Mouse pulsar wind nebula (G359.23-0.82), and the Tornado supernova remnant candidate (G357.7-0.1), are examined in detail. We report on the host association of FRB 20181030A, a repeating fast radio burst (FRB) with a low dispersion measure (DM, 103.5 pc cm$^{-3}$) discovered by CHIME/FRB Collaboration et al. (2019a). Using baseband voltage data saved for its repeat bursts, we localize the FRB to a sky area of 5.3 sq. arcmin (90% confidence). Within the FRB localization region, we identify NGC 3252 as the most promising host, with an estimated chance coincidence probability $< 2.5 \times 10^{-3}$. Moreover, we do not find any other galaxy with M$_{r} < -15$ AB mag within the localization region to the maximum estimated FRB redshift of 0.05. This rules out a dwarf host 5 times less luminous than any FRB host discovered to date. NGC 3252 is a star-forming spiral galaxy, and at a distance of $\approx$ 20 Mpc, it is one of the closest FRB hosts discovered thus far. The angular size of the broad line region (BLR) of the nearby active galactic nucleus (AGN) NGC 3783 has been spatially resolved by recent observations with VLTI/GRAVITY. A reverberation mapping (RM) campaign has also recently obtained high quality light curves and measured the linear size of the BLR in a way that is complementary to the GRAVITY measurement. The size and kinematics of the BLR can be better constrained by a joint analysis that combines both GRAVITY and RM data. This, in turn, allows us to obtain the mass of the supermassive black hole in NGC3783 with an accuracy that is about a factor of two better than that inferred from GRAVITY data alone. We derive $M_\mathrm{BH}=2.54_{-0.72}^{+0.90}\times 10^7\,M_\odot$. Finally, and perhaps most notably, we are able to measure a geometric distance to NGC 3783 of $39.9^{+14.5}_{-11.9}$ Mpc. We are able to test the robustness of the BLR-based geometric distance with measurements based on the Tully-Fisher relation and other indirect methods. We find the geometric distance is consistent with other methods within their scatter. We explore the potential of BLR-based geometric distances to directly constrain the Hubble constant, $H_0$, and identify differential phase uncertainties as the current dominant limitation to the $H_0$ measurement precision for individual sources., 9 pages and 5 figures in main text, Accepted for publication in A&A

Tidal streams are highly sensitive to perturbations from passing dark matter (DM) subhalos and thus provide a means of measuring their abundance. In a recent paper, we analyzed the distribution of stars along the GD-1 stream with a combination of data from the Gaia satellite and the Pan-STARRS survey, and we demonstrated that the population of DM subhalos predicted by the cold dark matter (CDM) paradigm are necessary and sufficient to explain the perturbations observed in the linear density of stars. In this paper, we use the measurements of the subhalo mass function (SHMF) from the GD-1 data combined with a similar analysis of the Pal 5 stream to provide novel constraints on alternative DM scenarios that predict a suppression of the SHMF on scales smaller than the mass of dwarf galaxies, marginalizing over uncertainties in the slope and normalization of the unsuppressed SHMF and the susceptibility of DM subhalos in the inner Milky Way to tidal disruption. In particular, we derive a 95% lower limit on the mass of warm dark matter (WDM) thermal relics $m_{\rm WDM}>3.6\,\mathrm{keV}$ from streams alone that strengthens to $m_{\rm WDM}>6.2\,\mathrm{keV}$ when adding dwarf satellite counts. Similarly, we constrain the axion mass in ultra-light ("fuzzy") dark matter (FDM) models to be $m_{\rm FDM}>1.4\times10^{-21}\,\mathrm{eV}$ from streams alone or $m_{\rm FDM}>2.2\times10^{-21}\,\mathrm{eV}$ when adding dwarf satellite counts. Because we make use of simple approximate forms of the streams' SHMF measurement, our analysis is easy to replicate with other alternative DM models that lead to a suppression of the SHMF., JCAP, in press. Disc-halo decomposition on rotationally supported star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at $z>1$ are often limited to massive galaxies ($M_\star>10^{10}~M_\odot$) and rely on either deep Integral Field Spectroscopy data or stacking analyses. We present a study of the dark matter (DM) content of nine $z\approx1$ SFGs selected Using the brightest [OII] emitters in the deepest Multi-Unit Spectrograph Explorer (MUSE) field to date, namely the 140hr MUSE Extremely Deep Field, we perform disk-halo decompositions on 9 low-mass SFGs (with $10^{8.5}10^{10}~M_\odot$. The DM halos show constant surface densities of $\sim100~M_\odot$ pc$^{-2}$. Half of the sample shows a strong preference for cored over cuspy DM profiles. The presence of DM cores appears to be related to galaxies with stellar-to-halo mass $\log M_\star/M_{\rm vir}\approx-2.5$. In addition, the cuspiness of the DM profiles is found to be a strong function of the recent star-formation activity. The physical and chemical properties of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) at $z\gtrsim6$ have been studied successfully through the absorption in the spectra of background Quasi-Stellar Objects (QSOs). One of the most crucial questions is to investigate the nature and location of the source galaxies that give rise to these early metal absorbers. Theoretical models suggest that momentum-driven outflows from typical star-forming galaxies can eject metals into the CGM and the intergalactic medium (IGM) at z=5-6. Deep, dedicated surveys have searched for Ly$\alpha$ emission associated with strong CIV absorbers at $z\approx 6$, but only a few Ly$\alpha$ emitter candidates have been detected. Interpreting these detections is moreover ambiguous because Ly$\alpha$ is a resonant line, raising the need for complementary techniques for detecting absorbers' host galaxies. Here, using Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), we report a [C II] 158$\mu$m emitter associated with a strong low-ionization absorber, OI, at $z=5.978$. The projected impact parameter between OI and [C II] emitter is 20.0 kpc. The measured [C II] luminosity is $7.0\times 10^7$ solar luminosities. Galaxy clusters grow primarily through the continuous accretion of group-scale haloes. Group galaxies experience preprocessing during their journey into clusters. A star-bursting compact group, the Blue Infalling Group (BIG), is plunging into the nearby cluster A1367. Previous optical observations reveal rich tidal features in the BIG members, and a long H$\alpha$ trail behind. Here we report the discovery of a projected $\sim 250$ kpc X-ray tail behind the BIG using Chandra and XMM-Newton observations. The total hot gas mass in the tail is $\sim 7\times 10^{10}\ {\rm M}_\odot$ with an X-ray bolometric luminosity of $\sim 3.8\times 10^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The temperature along the tail is $\sim 1$ keV, but the apparent metallicity is very low, an indication of the multi-$T$ nature of the gas. The X-ray and H$\alpha$ surface brightnesses in the front part of the BIG tail follow the tight correlation established from a sample of stripped tails in nearby clusters, which suggests the multiphase gas originates from the mixing of the stripped interstellar medium (ISM) with the hot intracluster medium (ICM). Because thermal conduction and hydrodynamic instabilities are significantly suppressed, the stripped ISM can be long lived and produce ICM clumps. Our understanding of how AGN feedback operates in galaxy clusters has improved in recent years owing to large efforts in multi-wavelength observations and hydrodynamical simulations. However, it is much less clear how feedback operates in galaxy groups, which have shallower gravitational potentials. In this work, using very deep VLA and new MeerKAT observations from the MIGHTEE survey, we compiled a sample of 247 X-ray selected galaxy groups detected in the COSMOS field. We have studied the relation between the X-ray emission of the intra-group medium and the 1.4 GHz radio emission of the central radio galaxy. For comparison, we have also built a control sample of 142 galaxy clusters using ROSAT and NVSS data. We find that clusters and groups follow the same correlation between X-ray and radio emission. Large radio galaxies hosted in the centres of groups and merging clusters increase the scatter of the distribution. Using statistical tests and Monte-Carlo simulations, we show that the correlation is not dominated by biases or selection effects. We also find that galaxy groups are more likely than clusters to host large radio galaxies, perhaps owing to the lower ambient gas density or a more efficient accretion mode. In these groups, radiative cooling of the ICM could be less suppressed by AGN heating. The kinematic morphology-density relation of galaxies is normally attributed to a changing distribution of galaxy stellar masses with the local environment. However, earlier studies were largely focused on slow rotators; the dynamical properties of the overall population in relation to environment have received less attention. We use the SAMI Galaxy Survey to investigate the dynamical properties of $\sim$1800 early and late-type galaxies with $\log(M_*/M_{\odot})>9.5$ as a function of mean environmental overdensity ($\Sigma_{5}$) and their rank within a group or cluster. By classifying galaxies into fast and slow rotators, at fixed stellar mass above $\log(M_*/M_{\odot})>10.5$, we detect a higher fraction ($\sim3.4\sigma$) of slow rotators for group and cluster centrals and satellites as compared to isolated-central galaxies. Focusing on the fast-rotator population, we also detect a significant correlation between galaxy kinematics and their stellar mass as well as the environment they are in. Specifically, by using inclination-corrected or intrinsic $\lambda_{R_e}$ values, we find that, at fixed mass, satellite galaxies on average have the lowest $\lambda_{\,R_e,intr}$, isolated-central galaxies have the highest $\lambda_{\,R_e,intr}$, and group and cluster centrals lie in between. Similarly, galaxies in high-density environments have lower mean $\lambda_{\,R_e,intr}$ values as compared to galaxies at low environmental density. However, at fixed $\Sigma_{5}$, the mean $\lambda_{\,R_e,intr}$ differences for low and high-mass galaxies are of similar magnitude as when varying $\Sigma_{5}$ {($\Delta \lambda_{\,R_e,intr} \sim 0.05$. We present a bright galaxy sample with accurate and precise photometric redshifts (photo-zs), selected using $ugriZYJHK_\mathrm{s}$ photometry from the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS) Data Release 4 (DR4). The highly pure and complete dataset is flux-limited at $r5\times 10^{11} M_\odot$), the red galaxies occupy dark matter halos that are much more massive than those occupied by blue galaxies with the same stellar mass. In a purely cold dark matter universe, the initial matter power spectrum and its subsequent gravitational growth contain no special mass- or time-scales, and so neither do the emergent population statistics of internal dark matter (DM) halo properties. Using 1.5 million halos from three IllustrisTNG realizations of a LambdaCDM universe, we show that galaxy formation physics drives non-monotonic features ("wiggles") into DM property statistics across six decades in halo mass, from dwarf galaxies to galaxy clusters. We characterize these features by extracting the halo mass-dependent statistics of five DM halo properties -- velocity dispersion, NFW concentration, density- and velocity-space shapes, and formation time -- using kernel-localized linear regression (KLLR). Comparing precise estimates of normalizations, slopes, and covariances between realizations with and without galaxy formation, we find systematic deviations across all mass-scales, with maximum deviations of 25% at the Milky-Way mass of 1e12 Msun. The mass-dependence of the wiggles is set by the interplay between different cooling and feedback mechanisms, and we discuss its observational implications. The property covariances depend strongly on halo mass and physics treatment, but the correlations are mostly robust. Using multivariate KLLR and interpretable machine learning, we show the halo concentration and velocity-space shape are principal contributors, at different mass, to the velocity dispersion variance. We present a revised and extended version of the analytic model for cosmic star formation originally given by Hernquist & Springel in 2003. The key assumption of this formalism is that star formation proceeds from cold gas, at a rate that is limited by an internal consumption timescale at early times, or by the rate of generation of gas via cooling at late times. These processes are analysed as a function of the mass of dark matter haloes and integrated over the halo population. We modify this approach in two main ways to make it more general: (1) halo collapse times are included explicitly, so that the behaviour is physically reasonable at late times; (2) allowance is made for a mass-dependent baryon fraction in haloes, which incorporates feedback effects. This model reproduces the main features of the observed baryonic Tully-Fisher relationship, and is consistent with observational estimates of the baryon mass fraction in the intergalactic medium. With minimal adjustment of parameters, our approach reproduces the observed history of cosmic star formation within a factor of two over the redshift range $0 < z < 10$. This level of agreement is comparable to that achieved by state-of-the-art cosmological simulations. We explore the clustering of galaxy groups in the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey to investigate the dependence of group bias and profile on separation scale and group mass. Due to the inherent uncertainty in estimating the group selection function, and hence the group auto-correlation function, we instead measure the projected galaxy--group cross-correlation function. We find that the group profile has a strong dependence on scale and group mass on scales $r_\bot \lesssim 1 h^{-1} \mathrm{Mpc}$. We also find evidence that the most massive groups live in extended, overdense, structures. In the first application of marked clustering statistics to groups, we find that group-mass marked clustering peaks on scales comparable to the typical group radius of $r_\bot \approx 0.5 h^{-1} \mathrm{Mpc}$. While massive galaxies are associated with massive groups, the marked statistics show no indication of galaxy mass segregation within groups. We conducted an X-ray analysis of one of the two Planck-detected triplet-cluster systems, PLCK G334.8-38.0, with a $\sim100$~ks deep XMM-Newton data. We find that the system has a redshift of $z=0.37\pm{0.01}$ but the precision of the X-ray spectroscopy for two members is too low to rule out a projected triplet system, demanding optical spectroscopy for further investigation. In projection, the system looks almost like an equilateral triangle with an edge length of $\sim2.0\,\mathrm{Mpc}$, but masses are very unevenly distributed ($M_{500} \sim [2.5,0.7,0.3] \times 10^{14}\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ from bright to faint). The brightest member appears to be a relaxed cool-core cluster and is more than twice as massive as both other members combined. The second brightest member appears to be a disturbed non-cool-core cluster and the third member was too faint to make any classification. None of the clusters have an overlapping $R_{500}$ region and no signs of cluster interaction were found; however, the XMM-Newton data alone are probably not sensitive enough to detect such signs, and a joint analysis of X-ray and the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect (tSZ) is needed for further investigation, which may also reveal the presence of the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) within the system. The comparison with the other Planck-detected triplet-cluster-system (PLCK G214.6+36.9) shows that they have rather different configurations, suggesting rather different merger scenarios, under the assumption that they are both not simply projected triplet systems., Comment: Accepted for publication by A&A. Intensity mapping of the 21cm signal of neutral hydrogen will yield exciting insights into the Epoch of Reionisation and the nature of the first galaxies. However, the large amount of data that will be generated by the next generation of radio telescopes, such as the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), as well as the numerous observational obstacles to overcome, require analysis techniques tuned to extract the reionisation history and morphology. In this context, we introduce a one-point statistic, to which we refer as the local variance, $\sigma_\mathrm{loc}$, that describes the distribution of the mean differential 21cm brightness temperatures measured in two-dimensional maps along the frequency direction of a light-cone. The local variance takes advantage of what is usually considered an observational bias, the sample variance. We find the redshift-evolution of the local variance to not only probe the reionisation history of the observed patches of the sky, but also trace the ionisation morphology. This estimator provides a promising tool to constrain the midpoint of reionisation as well as gaining insight into the ionising properties of early galaxies., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures, published in A&A

Stanford, S. A., et al., The Complete Calibration of the Color–Redshift Relation (C3R2) survey is obtaining spectroscopic redshifts in order to map the relation between galaxy color and redshift to a depth of i ∼ 24.5 (AB). The primary goal is to enable sufficiently accurate photometric redshifts for Stage iv dark energy projects, particularly Euclid and the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (Roman), which are designed to constrain cosmological parameters through weak lensing. We present 676 new high-confidence spectroscopic redshifts obtained by the C3R2 survey in the 2017B–2019B semesters using the DEIMOS, LRIS, and MOSFIRE multiobject spectrographs on the Keck telescopes. Combined with the 4454 redshifts previously published by this project, the C3R2 survey has now obtained and published 5130 high-quality galaxy spectra and redshifts. If we restrict consideration to only the 0.2 < zp < 2.6 range of interest for the Euclid cosmological goals, then with the current data release, C3R2 has increased the spectroscopic redshift coverage of the Euclid color space from 51% (as reported by Masters et al.) to the current 91%. Once completed and combined with extensive data collected by other spectroscopic surveys, C3R2 should provide the spectroscopic calibration set needed to enable photometric redshifts to meet the cosmology requirements for Euclid, and make significant headway toward solving the problem for Roman.
