A novel virtual material layer model based on the fractal theory was proposed to predict the natural frequencies of carbon fiber reinforced plastic composite bolted joints. Rough contact surfaces of composite bolted joints are modeled with this new proposed approach. Numerical and experimental modal analyses were conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed model. A good consistence is noted between the numerical and experimental results. To demonstrate the necessity of accurately modeling the rough contact surfaces in the prediction of natural frequencies, virtual material layer model was compared with the widely used traditional model based on the Master-Slave contact algorithm and experiments, respectively. Results show that the proposed model has a better agreement with experiments than the widely used traditional model (the prediction accuracy is raised by 8.77% when the pre-tightening torque is 0.5 N∙m). Real contact area ratio A* of three different virtual material layers were calculated. Value of A* were discussed with dimensionless load P*, fractal dimension D and fractal roughness G. This work provides a new efficient way for accurately modeling the rough contact surfaces and predicting the natural frequencies of composite bolted joints, which can be used to help engineers in the dynamic design of composite materials.

Morphing leading edge has great potential for noise abatement and aerodynamic efficiency improvement. The drooping effect is realized by bending of the flexible skin which encloses to form the leading edge. Since the flexible skin is often made of composite laminates of Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastics (GFRP), the lay-up sequences have become the determinant, which affects not only the morphing quality but also the manufacturing complexity. Two optimizing methods of lay-up sequences are comparatively studied. In the first method, the laminal quantities in 0°, ±45° and 90° vary independently, while in the second one, the concept of isotropic laminate unit [0/45/−45/90]s is employed and the unit quantity is the unique variable. Final evaluation demonstrates that for both methods there is insignificant impact to the overall morphing quality; however, specific concern is equally necessary for these two methods to the tip of the leading edge where the skin is at its minimum thickness and bears the most severe bending deformation. In terms of computational efficiency and post-processing labor, the second method has better performance.

Oxygen release and irreversible cation migration are the main causes of voltage fade in Li-rich transition metal oxide cathode. But their correlation is not very clear and voltage decay is still a bottleneck. Herein, we modulate the oxygen anionic redox chemistry by constructing Li2ZrO3 slabs into Li2MnO3 domain in Li1.21Ni0.28Mn0.51O2, which induces the lattice strain, tunes the chemical environment for redox-active oxygen and enlarges the gap between metallic and anionic bands. This modulation expands the region in which lattice oxygen contributes capacity by oxidation to oxygen holes and relieves the charge transfer from anionic band to antibonding metal–oxygen band under a deep delithiation. This restrains cation reduction, metal–oxygen bond fracture, and the formation of localized O2 molecule, which fundamentally inhibits lattice oxygen escape and cation migration. The modulated cathode demonstrates a low voltage decay rate (0.45 millivolt per cycle) and a long cyclic stability., Voltage fade is a critical issue for Li-rich transition metal oxide cathode. The unavoidable increase in train speed and load, as well as the aging of railway facilities, is requiring more and more attention to rail defects detection. As a promising tool for rail, in-service high-speed inspection, guided wave–based detection technologies have been developed in succession by researches in the past two decades. However, there is a lack of a systematic review on the developments and performances of these technologies. This article reviews ultrasonic rail inspection methods comprehensively with the focus on the state-of-the-art technologies based on guided wave. Different excitation options, including train wheel, electromagnetic acoustic transducer, pulsed laser, air-coupled, and contact piezoelectric transducer, are described, respectively, along with their inspection sensitivities, regions, and potential speeds. Finally, future challenges and prospects are discussed to a certain extent to provide references for researchers in this area.

In this paper, a fast and effective method based on multiple image features and a weighted K-means clustering algorithm is proposed to achieve the automatic grading of apples. The method provides a novel way of using four images (top, bottom and two sides) and average gray values for each apple to distinguish between the apple defects, stem and calyx. Furthermore, weighted features (MCSAD (maximum cross-sectional average diameter), circularity, PRA (proportion of red area) and defect regions) were carefully selected according to the requirements of the national apple grading standard, which improves the practicality of the proposed method. Finally, qualitative and quantitative evaluation results demonstrate that the total accuracy of the proposed multi-feature grading method is greater than 96%, which provides encouragement for the additional research and implementation of multi-feature automatic grading for the fruit industry.

Background Poa L. is a large genus of grass in Gramineae, among which P. pratensis is widely cultivated as turf and forage. Satellite DNA is the main components of the plant genome. Information of satellites will helpful for dissection the genome composition and definition of the phylogeny relationship of these species. However, the knowledge about the satellites in genus Poa is still limited. Results Four satellite DNAs were identified using the Repeat Explorer pipeline in HiSeq Illumina reads from diploid plants in P. malaca (2n = 26). Two satellites showed high similarity with the previously identified PpTr-1 and PpTr-3, whereas two others are newly identified with the monomer of 326 bp (Poa-326) and 353 bp (Poa-353) respectively. The clone DNAs of PpTr-1 and PpTr-3, and oligonucleotides designed representing satellites Poa-326 and Poa-353 were probed to test on chromosomes across 13 Poa speceis with different polyploidy level by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH). PpTr-1, PpTr-3, and Poa-362 were stably positioned in the subtelomeric regions in nearly all species with the variation of hybridization sites number. However, Poa-353 showed different FISH patterns of multiple regions with the variation of hybridization intensity and distribution sites across species. In addition, 5S rDNA and 45S rDNA were used to characterize the genome of the Poa species. Four rDNA FISH patterns were revealed in the tested species. Conclusion Four identified satellite were high conservable across Poa species. Genome distribution of these satellites can be characterized by FISH. The variation of satellite DNAs and rDNA chromosomal distributions between species provide useful information for phylogenetic analysis in genus Poa.

Plant spermatogenesis is a complex process that directly affects crop breeding. A rapid change in gene abundance occurs at early meiosis prophase, when gene regulation is selective. However, how these genes are regulated remains unknown. Here, we show that rice reproductive phasiRNAs are essential for the elimination of a specific set of RNAs during meiotic prophase I. These phasiRNAs cleave target mRNAs in a regulatory manner such that one phasiRNA can target more than one gene, and/or a single gene can be targeted by more than one phasiRNA to efficiently silence target genes. Our investigation of phasiRNA-knockdown and PHAS-edited transgenic plants demonstrates that phasiRNAs and their nucleotide variations are required for meiosis progression and fertility. This study highlights the importance of reproductive phasiRNAs for the reprogramming of gene expression during meiotic progression and establishes a basis for future studies on the roles of phasiRNAs with a goal of crop improvement., 21-nucleotide phased secondary siRNAs are expressed in the developing rice anthers during meiosis. Here, the authors show that phasiRNAs can cleave target mRNA and act to ensure the progression of meiosis and fertility in rice.

Population structure is a key determinant in fostering cooperation among naturally self-interested individuals in microbial populations, social insect groups, and human societies. Traditional research has focused on static structures, and yet most real interactions are finite in duration and changing in time, forming a temporal network. This raises the question of whether cooperation can emerge and persist despite an intrinsically fragmented population structure. Here we develop a framework to study the evolution of cooperation on temporal networks. Surprisingly, we find that network temporality actually enhances the evolution of cooperation relative to comparable static networks, despite the fact that bursty interaction patterns generally impede cooperation. We resolve this tension by proposing a measure to quantify the amount of temporality in a network, revealing an intermediate level that maximally boosts cooperation. Our results open a new avenue for investigating the evolution of cooperation and other emergent behaviours in more realistic structured populations., Population structure enables emergence of cooperation among individuals, but the impact of the dynamic nature of real interaction networks is not understood. Here, the authors study the evolution of cooperation on temporal networks and find that temporality enhances the evolution of cooperation.

At present, the primary technical deterrent to the use of strawberry harvesting robots is the low harvest rate, and there is a need to improve the accuracy and real-time performance of the localization algorithms to detect the picking point on the strawberry stem. The pose estimation of the fruit target (the direction of the fruit axis) can improve the accuracy of the localization algorithm. This study proposes a novel harvesting robot for the ridge-planted strawberries as well as a fruit pose estimator called rotated YOLO (R-YOLO), which significantly improves the localization precision of the picking points. First, the lightweight network Mobilenet-V1 was used to replace the convolution neural network as the backbone network for feature extraction. The simplified network structure substantially increased the operating speed. Second, the rotation angle parameter $\alpha $ was used to label the training set and set the anchors; the rotation of the bounding boxes of the target fruits was predicted using logistic regression with the rotated anchors. The test results of a set of 100 strawberry images showed that the proposed model's average recognition rate to be 94.43% and the recall rate to be 93.46%. Eighteen frames per second (FPS) were processed on the embedded controller of the robot, demonstrating good real-time performance. Compared with several other target detection methods used for the fruit harvesting robots, the proposed model exhibited better performance in terms of real-time detection and localization accuracy of the picking points. Field test results showed that the harvesting success rate reached 84.35% in modified situations. The results of this study provide technical support for improving the target detection of the embedded controller of harvesting robots.

Aims: The benefits of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on yield and phosphorus (P) uptake of crops have commonly been studied by inoculating a single mycorrhizal fungal species in pot experiments. Yet, how the native AMF community affects the performance of different maize varieties under field conditions remains obscure. Methods: In-growth cores with and without rotation were used in three soils that differed in P application to assess shoot biomass, P uptake, and mycorrhizal colonization of three maize varietal groups, encompassing four inbred lines, 12 hybrids, and four landraces. Results: Rotating cores drastically reduced mycorrhizal colonization, biomass and P uptake for each varietal group at every P level. Performance of plants at natural mycorrhizal colonization at 30 kg P ha−1 was equal to that of reduced-mycorrhizal plants at 60 kg P ha−1, suggesting the potential for adequate mycorrhizal management to save P fertilizer. Conclusion: There were no significant differences between varietal groups for mycorrhizal responsiveness, confirming that the ability to associate with and benefit from AMF has been maintained in modern breeding. Mycorrhizal plants both exhibited higher P acquisition efficiency and higher P use efficiency than reduced-mycorrhizal plants. Disadvantages of in-growth cores should be duly considered.

Surfactant-assisted enzymatic hydrolysis was used to extract the flavor compounds from piper nigrum L. The extraction conditions were optimized through orthogonal and single-factor experiments. The extracted piperine content, measured with High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and UV spectrophotometric, was used as experimental index. The optimized conditions were as follows: the amount of cellulase, neutral protease and surfactant (sodium stearoyl lactylate) addition was 0.08%, 0.1% and 0.4% (w/w) respectively. The solid–liquid ratio was 1:5 (g/mL), the enzymolysis temperature and time were 60°C and 4 h, and the granularity was less than 10 mesh. Under these conditions, the content of the extracted piperine was 4.54% (UV spectrophotometric) and 4.42% (HPLC), respectively. Meanwhile, the mechanisms of the enzymatic reaction, as well as the role of the surfactant in enzymatic hydrolysis process were discussed.

The aim of this study was to develop a new efficient strategy that uses the Vector form Intrinsic Finite-element (VFIFE) method to conduct the static and dynamic analyses of marine pipes. Nonlinear problems, such as large displacement, small strain, and contact and collision, can be analyzed using a unified calculation process in the VFIFE method according to the fundamental theories of point value description, path element, and reverse motion. This method enables analysis without the need to integrate the stiffness matrix of the structure, because only motion equations of particles established according to Newton's second law are required. These characteristics of the VFIFE facilitate the modeling and computation efficiencies in analyzing the nonlinear dynamic problem of flexible pipe with large deflections. In this study, a three-dimensional (3-D) dynamical model based on 3-D beam element was established according to the VFIFE method. The deep-sea flexible pipe was described by a set of spatial mass particles linked by 3-D beam element. The motion and configuration of the pipe are determined by these spatial particles. Based on this model, a simulation procedure to predict the 3-D dynamical behavior of flexible pipe was developed and verified. It was found that the spatial configuration and static internal force of the mining pipe can be obtained by calculating the stationary state of pipe motion. Using this simulation procedure, an analysis was conducted on the static and dynamic behaviors of the flexible mining pipe based on a 1000-m sea trial system. The results of the analysis proved that the VFIFE method can be efficiently applied to the static and dynamic analyses of marine pipes. (C) 2020 Society of Naval Architects of Korea. We address a method of pedestrian segmentation in a video in a spatio-temporally consistent way. For this purpose, given a bounding box sequence of each pedestrian obtained by a conventional pedestrian detector and tracker, we construct a spatio-temporal graph on a video and segment each pedestrian on the basis of a well-established graph-cut segmentation framework. More specifically, we consider three terms as an energy function for the graph-cut segmentation: (1) a data term, (2) a spatial pairwise term, and (3) a temporal pairwise term. To maintain better temporal consistency of segmentation even under relatively large motions, we introduce a transportation minimization framework that provides a temporal correspondence. Moreover, we introduce the edge-sticky superpixel to maintain the spatial consistency of object boundaries. In experiments, we demonstrate that the proposed method improves segmentation accuracy indices, such as the average and weighted intersection of union on TUD datasets and the PETS2009 dataset at both the instance level and semantic level.

Groundwater treatment sludge is an industrial waste that is massively produced from groundwater treatment plants. Conventional methods for treatment of this sludge, such as discharge into deep wells or the sea, or disposal at landfills, are not environmentally sustainable. Here, we demonstrate an alternative strategy to recycle the sludge by preparing a magnetic maghemite adsorbent via a one-step hydrothermal method with NaOH solution as the only solvent. With this method, the weakly magnetized sludge, which contained 33.2% iron (Fe) and other impurities (e.g., silicon (Si), aluminum (Al), and manganese (Mn)), was converted to magnetic adsorbent (MA) with the dissolution of Si/Al oxides (e.g., quartz and albite) into the liquid fraction. At a NaOH concentration of 2 mol·L−1, approximately 18.1% of the ferrihydrite in the Fe oxides of the sludge was converted into 11.2% maghemite and 6.9% hematite after the hydrothermal treatment. MA2 (i.e., MA produced by a 2 mol·L−1 NaOH concentration) exhibited a good magnetic response of 8.2 emu·g−1 (1 emu = 10−3 A·m2), and a desirable surface site concentration of 0.75 mmol·g−1. The synthesized MA2 was used to adsorb the cationic pollutant tetracycline (TC). The adsorption kinetics of TC onto MA2 fitted well with a pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption isotherms complied well with the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacity of MA2 for TC was 362.3 mg·g−1, and the main mechanism for TC adsorption was cationic exchange. This study is the first to demonstrate the preparation of an MA from recycled sludge without a reductant and/or exogenous Fe source. The prepared adsorbent can be used as a low-cost adsorbent with high capacity for TC sorption in the treatment of TC-containing wastewater. Stable barium isotopes are a potential proxy for riverine inputs into the ocean that reflect monsoon variability and climate change. However, dissolved Ba isotope (δ138BaDBa) geochemistry in river estuaries, a dynamic land to ocean transition zone, has rarely been systematically examined to date. Here, we show that significant Ba isotope fractionation occurs at near-zero salinities in the Yangtze and Pearl River Estuary, whereas conservative mixing dominates δ138BaDBa distributions beyond low salinities, which are well predicted by an ion exchange model. Elevated δ138BaDBa in the river endmember results from preferential removal of light Ba isotopes by adsorption to fluvial particles. Subsequently, δ138BaDBa rapidly drops to minimum signatures at increased salinities indicating particle desorption of isotopically light Ba. Nevertheless, the apparently conservative δ138BaDBa-salinity relationship beyond the low-salinity minimum in both estuaries provides a modern calibration for using Ba isotopes as a proxy for paleosalinity and river water inputs into the ocean.

This work was supported by the UK Natural Environment Research Council (award NE/I022973/1) to AAF and NA. Coral skeletal Sr/Ca has valuable potential as a proxy of sea surface temperatures (SSTs). However seawater pCO2 can influence skeletal Sr incorporation and Sr/Ca-SST calibrations derived from present day corals may not be applicable to ancient specimens or older sections of modern corals deposited under lower seawater pCO2 than the present day. In this study we analysed skeletal Sr/Ca in multiple genotypes of massive Porites spp. cultured over a range of seawater pCO2 (from 180 to 750 μatm) and temperature (25°C and 28°C). Multiple linear regression analysis indicates that the Sr/Ca aragonite partition coefficient, KD Sr/Ca is inversely related to seawater temperature and positively related to seawater pCO2 (equivalent to changes in skeletal Sr/Ca of 0.046 mmol mol-1 °C-1 and 0.0002 mmol mol–1 µatm-1 respectively). Applying present day Sr/Ca-SST equations to older coral skeletons growing at lower pCO2 could underestimate seawater temperatures. However KD Sr/Ca vary significantly between some coral genotypes cultured at the same seawater pCO2 indicating that other unidentified processes also influence skeletal Sr/Ca and it is unknown how these processes varied when ancient corals were deposited. We do not observe a significant relationship between KD Sr/Ca and coral calcification rate after combining all coral genotypes to allow identification of the correct KD Sr/Ca to apply to coral records. International audience; Check dams have been used throughout the world for a variety of purposes including torrent control, water supply enhancement, agricultural land development, and watershed restoration. National, regional and local governments have invested, and continue to invest, in basin scale erosion-control projects that may include both maintenance of existing and construction of new check dams. The functions of these structures are diverse and vary depending on the geomorphic context where the structures are built. However, although the number of check dams constructed to control floods, regulate sediment transport, reduce upstream reach slopes and sta-bilize torrent beds continues to increase, some projects have experienced disappointing results, and thus project objectives are not achieved. Causes of failure include poor construction quality, inadequate check dam location and lack of adequate design criteria. These failures lead to reduced confidence in using check dams as restoration tools. Moreover, both construction of dense networks of check dams and construction of a few large open structures require major economic investments, however a comprehensive evaluation of their long-term effec-tiveness is still lacking. This review aims to achieve a detailed synthesis of the effects of check dams based on a review of the literature that includes conceptual thinking, field observations and numerical approaches. Using the knowledge gaps identified in this work as a starting point, the review is an effort to join and share scientific and technical information from a variety of sites throughout the world based on the legacy effects of check dams. The role of complex interactions between ecological impacts, geomorphic processes and engineering activities is also highlighted. Overall, this review identifies the self-similar character of check dams and the process feedback loops they initiate across a range of spatial scales and geographic settings.

Transdisciplinary approaches that provide holistic views are essential to properly understand soil processes and the importance of soil to society and will be crucial in the future to integrate distinct disciplines into soil studies. A myriad of challenges faces soil science at the beginning of the 2020s. The main aim of this overview is to assess past achievements and current challenges regarding soil threats such as ero-sion and soil contamination related to different United Nations sustainable development goals (SDGs) including (1) sustainable food production, (2) ensure healthy lives and reduce environmental risks (SDG3), (3) ensure water availability (SDG6), and (4) enhanced soil carbon sequestration because of climate change (SDG13). Twenty experts from different disciplines related to soil sciences offer perspectives on important research directions. Special attention must be paid to some concerns such as (1) effective soil conservation strategies; (2) new computational technolo-gies, models, and in situ measurements that will bring new insights to in-soil process at spatiotemporal scales, their relationships, dynamics, and thresholds; (3) impacts of human activities, wildfires, and climate change on soil microorganisms and thereby on biogeochemical cycles and water relationships; (4) microplastics as a new potential pollutant; (5) the development of green technologies for soil rehabilitation; and (6) the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by simultaneous soil carbon sequestration and reduction in nitrous oxide emission. A polarized micropulse lidar (P-MPL) employing a pulsed laser at 532 nm was developed by the Institute of Oceanographic Instrumentation, Qilu University of Technology (Shandong Academy of Sciences). The optomechanical structure, technical parameters, detection principle, overlap factor calculation method, and inversion methods of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) depth and depolarization ratio (DR) were introduced. Continuous observations using the P-MPL were carried out at Xi’an Meteorological Bureau, and the observation data were analyzed. In this study, we gleaned much information on aerosols and clouds, including the temporal and spatial variation of aerosols and clouds, aerosol extinction coefficient, DR, and the structure of ABL were obtained by the P-MPL. The variation of aerosols and clouds before and after a short rainfall was analyzed by combining time-height-indication (THI) of range corrected signal (RCS) and DR was obtained by the P-MPL with profiles of potential temperature (PT) and relative humidity (RH) detected by GTS1 Digital Radiosonde. Then, the characteristics of tropopause cirrus cloud were discussed using the data of DR, PT, and RH. Finally, a haze process from January 1st to January 5th was studied by using aerosol extinction coefficients obtained by the P-MPL, PT, and RH profiles measured by GTS1 Digital Radiosonde and the time-varying of PM2.5 and PM10 observed by ambient air quality monitor. The source of the haze was simulated by using the NOAA HYSPLIT Trajectory Model.

The Full Velocity Difference (FVD) model is a well-recognized and widely-used time continuous car following model. Although the model has very good simulation performances in most cases, it is not applicable to some specific traffic scenarios, where it can generate very large or even overshooting accelerations or decelerations that are totally unnecessary and might be far beyond the acceleration/deceleration limits of real vehicles. In this paper, we explore the reason and attempt to correct it by proposing a confined Full Velocity Difference (c-FVD) model in which we limit the accelerations or decelerations generated by the existing FVD models to a reasonable level. The performances of both models are compared from both microscopic and macroscopic perspectives. The ability of the modified model to generate strong but reasonable decelerations to avoid accidents in urgent traffic scenarios is also validated. According to the comparative analyses, both models will have same performances in most cases while the c-FVD model will outperform the existing FVD model in certain scenarios where very large or overshooting accelerations or decelerations are involved.

This paper reports the design, fabrication and measurement techniques for a set of low-loss slotted waveguides. The waveguides are fabricated based on a micro metal additive manufacturing technology. They were fabricated layer by layer in one piece without the need of post-fabrication assembly. As examples, straight waveguides in WR-3.4 (220-330°GHz) and WR-2.2 (330-500°GHz) bands were fabricated and tested. Measurement results show the insertion loss per unit length is 0.0615-0.122°dB/mm and 0.116-0.281°dB/mm, respectively.

Metallic foams have drawn increasing attention in applications ranging from lightweight structures to energy absorption devices. Mechanical properties of metallic foams depend on both their microstructure and cellular structure. In situ Al-4.5%Cu-xTiB2 composites were used as start materials for fabrication of closed-cell foams through liquid route under atmosphere pressure and increased pressure, aiming at simultaneously strengthening the cell wall material and optimizing the cellular structure. Macro-structural features of the foams were determined by micro X-ray computed tomography (µCT), results exhibit that increasing weight ratio of in situ TiB2 particles leads to coarsened cell structure for foams made under atmosphere pressure, due to the increase in critical thickness of cell wall rupture. Significant reduction of cell size and increase in cell circularity were observed for foams fabricated under increased pressure. Quasi static compression test results indicate that yield strength of foam samples increases with increasing particle fraction and refinement of cell structure. Microstructure observation shows that the continuous network at interdendritic regions consists of in situ TiB2 particles and intermetallic compounds are responsible for the reduced ductility of cell wall materials and the reduction in energy absorption efficiency of foams with high particle fraction. The influences of cell structure on the normalized strength and specific energy absorption were also discussed, and it was found that the improvement of yield strength and energy absorption of composite foams attributes to both the reinforcement of in situ TiB2 particles and the refinement of cellular structure.

A mutant of the ridgetail white prawn, which exhibited rare orange-red body color with a higher level of free astaxanthin (ASTX) concentration than that in the wild-type prawn, was obtained in our lab. In order to understand the underlying mechanism for the existence of a high level of free astaxanthin, transcriptome analysis was performed to identify the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the mutant and wild-type prawns. A total of 78,224 unigenes were obtained, and 1863 were identified as DEGs, in which 902 unigenes showed higher expression levels, while 961 unigenes presented lower expression levels in the mutant in comparison with the wild-type prawns. Based on Gene Ontology analysis and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis, as well as further investigation of annotated DEGs, we found that the biological processes related to astaxanthin binding, transport, and metabolism presented significant differences between the mutant and the wild-type prawns. Some genes related to these processes, including crustacyanin, apolipoprotein D (ApoD), cathepsin, and cuticle proteins, were identified as DEGs between the two types of prawns. These data may provide important information for us to understand the molecular mechanism of the existence of a high level of free astaxanthin in the prawn.

Cucumber powdery mildew caused by Sphaerotheca fuliginea is a leaf disease that seriously affects cucumber’s yield and quality. This study aimed to report two nucleotide-binding site-leucine-rich repeats (NBS-LRR) genes CsRSF1 and CsRSF2, which participated in regulating the resistance of cucumber to S. fuliginea. The subcellular localization showed that the CsRSF1 protein was localized in the nucleus, cytoplasm, and cell membrane, while the CsRSF2 protein was localized in the cell membrane and cytoplasm. In addition, the transcript levels of CsRSF1 and CsRSF2 were different between resistant and susceptible cultivars after treatment with exogenous substances, such as abscisic acid (ABA), methyl jasmonate (MeJA), salicylic acid (SA), ethephon (ETH), gibberellin (GA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The expression analysis showed that the transcript levels of CsRSF1 and CsRSF2 were correlated with plant defense response against S. fuliginea. Moreover, the silencing of CsRSF1 and CsRSF2 impaired host resistance to S. fuliginea, but CsRSF1 and CsRSF2 overexpression improved resistance to S. fuliginea in cucumber. These results showed that CsRSF1 and CsRSF2 genes positively contributed to the resistance of cucumber to S. fuliginea. At the same time, CsRSF1 and CsRSF2 genes could also regulate the expression of defense-related genes. The findings of this study might help enhance the resistance of cucumber to S. fuliginea.

Crop domestication, which gives rise to a number of desirable agronomic traits, represents a typical model system of plant evolution. Numerous genomic evidence has proven that noncoding RNAs such as microRNAs and phasiRNAs, as well as protein-coding genes, are selected during crop domestication. However, limited data shows plant long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are also involved in this biological process. In this study, we performed strand-specific RNA sequencing of cultivated rice Oryza sativa ssp. japonica and O. sativa ssp. indica, and their wild progenitor O. rufipogon. We identified a total of 8528 lncRNAs, including 4072 lncRNAs in O. rufipogon, 2091 lncRNAs in japonica rice, and 2365 lncRNAs in indica rice. The lncRNAs expressed in wild rice were revealed to be shorter in length and had fewer exon numbers when compared with lncRNAs from cultivated rice. We also identified a number of conserved lncRNAs in the wild and cultivated rice. The functional study demonstrated that several of these conserved lncRNAs are associated with domestication-related traits in rice. Our findings revealed the feature and conservation of lncRNAs during rice domestication and will further promote functional studies of lncRNAs in rice.

Summary Plant defence is multilayered and is essential for surviving in a changing environment. The discovery of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) has dramatically extended our understanding of post‐transcriptional gene regulation in diverse biological processes. However, the expression profile and function of lncRNAs in disease resistance are still largely unknown, especially in monocots. Here, we performed strand‐specific RNA sequencing of rice leaves infected by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. Oryzae (Xoo) in different time courses and systematically identified 567 disease‐responsive rice lncRNAs. Target analyses of these lncRNAs showed that jasmonate (JA) pathway was significantly enriched. To reveal the interaction between lncRNAs and JA‐related genes, we studied the coexpression of them and found 39 JA‐related protein‐coding genes to be interplayed with 73 lncRNAs, highlighting the potential modulation of lncRNAs in JA pathway. We subsequently identified an lncRNA, ALEX1, whose expression is highly induced by Xoo infection. A T‐DNA insertion line constructed using enhancer trap system showed a higher expression of ALEX1 and exerted a significant resistance to rice bacterial blight. Functional study revealed that JA signalling is activated and the endogenous content of JA and JA‐Ile is increased. Overexpressing ALEX1 in rice further confirmed the activation of JA pathway and resistance to bacterial blight. Our findings reveal the expression of pathogen‐responsive lncRNAs in rice and provide novel insights into the connection between lncRNAs and JA pathway in the regulation of plant disease resistance.

A dense hydrogen‐bond network is responsible for the mechanical and structural properties of polysaccharides. Random derivatization alters the properties of the bulk material by disrupting the hydrogen bonds, but obstructs detailed structure–function correlations. We have prepared well‐defined unnatural oligosaccharides including methylated, deoxygenated, deoxyfluorinated, as well as carboxymethylated cellulose and chitin analogues with full control over the degree and pattern of substitution. Molecular dynamics simulations and crystallographic analysis show how distinct hydrogen‐bond modifications drastically affect the solubility, aggregation behavior, and crystallinity of carbohydrate materials. This systematic approach to establishing detailed structure–property correlations will guide the synthesis of novel, tailor‐made carbohydrate materials.

For wireless sensor networks (WSNs) based on ZigBee technology, the network topology plays an important role for improving the energy efficiency and the network lifetime. An appropriate construction method of network topology should be designed for saving the energy of the battery in each network node so as to prolong the lifetime of ZigBee WSNs. In this paper, a novel cluster tree topology construction method based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is proposed. In order to transform the network topology construction problem into an energy consumption optimization problem, an evaluation function reflecting the network energy consumption is designed, and the network topology is mapped into a particle population individual suitable for the PSO algorithm. In order to prolong the network lifetime as long as possible, two network topology reconstruction methods with the PSO algorithm based on fixed and variable energy thresholds are further proposed, respectively. The simulation results show that the proposed methods can prolong the lifetime of ZigBee WSNs effectively.

Automated glycan assembly (AGA) aims at accelerating access to synthetic oligosaccharides to meet the demand for defined glycans as tools for molecular glycobiology. The linkers used to connect the growing glycan chain to the solid support play a pivotal role in the synthesis strategy as they determine all chemical conditions used during the synthesis and the form of the glycan obtained at the end of it. Here, we describe a traceless photolabile linker used to prepare carbohydrates with a free reducing end. Modification of the o-nitrobenzyl scaffold of the linker is key to high yields and compatibility with the AGA workflow. The assembly of an asymmetrical biantennary N-glycan from oligosaccharide fragments prepared by AGA and linear as well as branched β-oligoglucans is described to illustrate the power of the method. These substrates will serve as standards and biomarkers to examine the unique specificity of glycosyl hydrolases.

Background Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of severe visual deficits and blindness. Meanwhile, there is convincing evidence implicating oxidative stress, inflammation, and neovascularization in the onset and progression of AMD. Several studies have identified berberine hydrochloride and chrysophanol as potential treatments for ocular diseases based on their antioxidative, antiangiogenic, and anti-inflammatory effects. Unfortunately, their poor stability and bioavailability have limited their application. In order to overcome these disadvantages, we prepared a compound liposome system that can entrap these drugs simultaneously using the third polyamidoamine dendrimer (PAMAM G3.0) as a carrier. Results PAMAM G3.0-coated compound liposomes exhibited appreciable cellular permeability in human corneal epithelial cells and enhanced bio-adhesion on rabbit corneal epithelium. Moreover, coated liposomes greatly improved BBH bioavailability. Further, coated liposomes exhibited obviously protective effects in human retinal pigment epithelial cells and rat retinas after photooxidative retinal injury. Finally, administration of P-CBLs showed no sign of side effects on ocular surface structure in rabbits model. Conclusions The PAMAM G3.0-liposome system thus displayed a potential use for treating various ocular diseases. Self-assembling peptides and oligonucleotides have given rise to synthetic materials with several applications in nanotechnology. Aggregation of synthetic oligosaccharides into well-defined architectures has not been reported even though natural polysaccharides, such as cellulose and chitin, are key structural components of biomaterials. Here, we report that six synthetic oligosaccharides, ranging from dimers to hexamers, self-assemble into nanostructures of varying morphologies and emit within the visible spectrum in an excitation-dependent manner. Well-defined differences in chain length, monomer modification, and aggregation methods yield glycomaterials with distinct shapes and properties. The excitation-dependent fluorescence in a broad range within the visible spectrum illustrates their potential for use in optical devices and imaging applications. We anticipate that our systematic approach of studying well-defined synthetic oligosaccharides will form the foundation of our understanding of carbohydrate interactions in nature.

Micro-expression recognition has been an active research area in recent years, it plays an important role in psychology and public security. Due to the aspects of short duration and subtle movement, it is challenging to extract spatiotemporal features of micro-expressions. The existing methods only extract features in the three-dimensional orthogonal plane and fail to make full use of that information. To solve this problem, we propose a new Local Cubes Binary Patterns (LCBP) method for micro-expression recognition. LCBP is cascaded by the motion information LCBPdirection, the amplitude information LCBPamplitudes, and the spatial information LCBP3D to obtain the spatiotemporal features. The advantage of LCBP is its ability to preserve the spatiotemporal information and the low feature dimension. Furthermore, to increase the discrimination of features in micro-expression sequences, we apply a differential calculation energy map to find regions of interest (ROI) for getting a weighted energy map. The final micro-expression feature acquired by fusing the LCBP features and the weighted energy map are classified through the Support Vector Machine (SVM). We evaluate the proposed method on four published micro-expression databases including SMIC, CASME, CASME2, SAMM. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method achieves promising performance for micro-expression recognition.

Nitrogen (N) is an essential macronutrient for plant development and growth, and the deposition of N has increased in recent decades. Legumes that fix N can also provide N for nearby species. However, N in soil inhibits N fixation. We tested the effects of N fertilisation on one N-fixing (Robinia pseudoacacia) and two non-N-fixing (Sophora japonica and Senna surattensis) woody legume species, which were subjected to five different N levels (0, 1.5, 2.9, 5.9 and 11.4 mg N per plant day−1) under greenhouse conditions. The growth of the two non-N-fixing species was promoted by N supply, while that of R. pseudoacacia was unaffected. Among the three species, R. pseudoacacia had the largest specific leaf area and chlorophyll concentration, S. japonica had the largest root-to-shoot ratio and main root-to-lateral root ratio, and S. surattensis had the largest leaf N and phosphorus concentrations. The N-fixing species was mostly unaffected by N supply. The growth, leaf chlorophyll concentration, and leaf number in the non-N-fixing species were promoted by N supply. The N-fixing species showed better growth in low-N environments, while under increased N deposition, its growth was similar to that of the non-N-fixing species.

Active noise control (ANC) provides an efficient way for eliminating low-frequency noise, whereas accurate controlling non-stationary noise of rotating machinery under time-variant secondary path is still a major challenge. To address this, a novel ANC method based on signal decomposition and simultaneous perturbation is developed in this paper. In the proposed method, an indicator of periodic characteristic (IPC) with the degree of cyclostationarity is first presented to evaluate reference noise. Subsequently, a real-time strategy of the IPC combined with fast empirical mode decomposition is designed to adaptively decompose reference noise into a series of intrinsic mode functions, which are stationary and further controlled individually. Besides, the simultaneous perturbation is applied to update the controller weights for having a better tracking ability under the time-variant secondary path. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the capacity of the proposed method for controlling non-stationary reference noise under the time-variant secondary path. The results demonstrate that proposed method is capable of performing better than commonly used algorithms.

Recently, diverse twisting structures have been discovered to be a potential approach to design liquid crystal polarization gratings and lenses (LCPGs and LCPLs) with a high diffraction efficiency, broad bandwidth, wide view, and large diffraction angle. In this review, we divide these twisting structures into two main types, namely, multi-layer twisting structures with phase compensation and twisting structures forming Bragg diffraction. We found that multi-layer twisting structure LCPGs and LCPLs presented a broader bandwidth and a wider view angle by phase compensation. While for transmissive or reflective Bragg LCPGs, a large diffraction angle with high diffraction efficiency could be achieved. Based on the theoretical analysis in the review, potential research directions on novel twisting structures were prospected.

Due to the micro-vibration of flywheels, the imaging quality of a high-resolution optical remote sensing satellite will be deteriorated, and the micro-vibration effect on the payload is complicated, so it is essential to establish a reasonable and accurate theoretical simulation model for it. This paper presents a method of full-closed-loop time-domain integrated modeling to estimate the impacts of micro-vibration generated by flywheels on optical satellites. The method consists of three parts. First, according to the satellites’ micro-vibration influence mechanism in orbit, this paper establishes a full-closed-loop model framework. The overall model input is the instructions received and the output is the image shift. Second, in order to meet the requirements of time-domain simulation, this paper proposes a time-domain vibration source subsystem model in the form of cosine harmonic superposition, and it integrates vibration source, structural, control, and optical subsystem models to create a full-closed-loop time-domain analysis model that can obtain the responses of micro-vibration in time and frequency domains. Lastly, the author designs a ground experiment and compares simulation results with experiment results. Compared with the ground experiment, frequency error is less than 0.4% at typical responses. Although the amplitude error is large at some typical responses, the mean root square error is less than 35%. Based on the data, the proposed integrated modeling method can be considered as an accurate methodology to predict the impacts of micro-vibration.

The sluggish water mass transport in the deeper North Pacific Ocean complicates the assessment of formation, spreading and mixing of surface, intermediate and deep-water masses based on standard hydrographic parameters alone. Geochemical tracers sensitive to water mass provenance and mixing allow to better characterize the origin and fate of the prevailing water masses. Here, we present dissolved neodymium (Nd) isotope compositions (εNd) and concentrations ([Nd]) obtained along a longitudinal transect at ∼180°E from ∼7°S to ∼50°N. The strongest contrast in Nd isotope signatures is observed in equatorial regions between surface waters (εNd ∼0 at 4.5°N) and Lower Circumpolar Deep Water (LCDW) prevailing at 4500 m depth (εNd = −6.7 at 7.2°N). The Nd isotope compositions of equatorial surface and subsurface waters are strongly influenced by regional inputs from the volcanic rocks surrounding the Pacific, which facilitates the identification of the source regions of these waters and seasonal changes in their advection along the equator. Highly radiogenic weathering inputs from Papua-New-Guinea control the εNd signature of the equatorial surface waters and strongly alter the εNd signal of Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) by sea water-particle interactions leading to an εNd shift from −5.3 to −1.7 and an increase in [Nd] from 8.5 to 11.0 pmol/kg between 7°S and 15°N. Further north in the open North Pacific, mixing calculations based on εNd, [Nd] and salinity suggest that this modification of the AAIW composition has a strong impact on intermediate water εNd signatures of the entire region allowing for improved identification of the formation regions and pathways of North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW). The deep-water Nd isotope signatures indicate a southern Pacific origin and subsequent changes along its trajectory resulting from a combination of water mass mixing, vertical processes and Nd release from seafloor sediments, which precludes Nd isotopes as quantitative tracers of deep-water mass mixing. Moreover, comparison with previously reported data indicates that the Nd isotope signatures and concentrations below 100 m depth essentially remained stable over the past decades, which suggests constant impacts of water mass advection and mixing as well as of non-conservative vertical exchange and bottom release.

We thank Rosa Oriola and Manuel Comino for the data they collected year after year, which are now being used as a dataset for scientific research. Both Rosa and Manuel—a farmer and his wife who are fully dependent on the agricultural production of their olive plantation to subsist—provided basic information that was used to research the variability in climate and olive production., Economic, social, and climatic conditions affect agricultural production. Those changes are relevant to the rainfed agricultural areas of the Mediterranean Belt, including Spain—the largest producer of olive oil in the world. However, little is known about the effect of the climate on olive production and farmer income. In this study, the correlation between changes in rainfall and total olive production was examined using a long-term dataset (28 years) on conventional rainfed production and tillage soil management. The dataset focused on different olive groves in the municipality of Bailén (Jaén, Andalusia) that have been owned by the same farmer since 1966. The province of Jaén is the region of Spain with the highest production of olive oil and the largest area of olive groves. The data included annual rainfall, production per plot and the price of olives. After calculating missing data to complete the rainfall series, pairwise correlation analysis with nonparametric Spearman’s rank coefficients and principal component analysis were used to process the data. The results showed that higher production coincided with increased rainfall during August and December. Therefore, we concluded that the impact of rainfall on olive production is variable and depends on drought intensity and the monthly rainfall distribution. An economic study showed that farmer income was highly dependent on the seasonal distribution of the rainfall among other factors such as the price of olives. Farmer income was low during drought periods, indicating that rainfed agriculture is perceived by farmers as unsustainable due to the resulting highly variable income. This study could help to prevent risks to food security in the future. We recognise that other key factors have also been important influences on the fluctuations in olive production over the years, such as soil properties and plant status. However, cultivating olives without irrigation—depending only on the total rainfall amount and rainfall intensity to supply all of the water consumed by the plants—is very risky too. This research demonstrates that the subsistence of Mediterranean rainfed olive farmers can be highly dependent on the rainfall conditions.

Lattice signature schemes generally require particular care when it comes to preventing secret information from leaking through signature transcript. For example, the Goldreich–Goldwasser–Halevi (GGH) signature scheme and the NTRUSign scheme were completely broken by the parallelepiped-learning attack of Nguyen and Regev (Eurocrypt 2006). Several heuristic countermeasures were also shown vulnerable to similar statistical attacks. At PKC 2008, Plantard, Susilo and Win proposed a new variant of GGH, informally arguing resistance to such attacks. Based on this variant, Plantard, Sipasseuth, Dumondelle and Susilo proposed a concrete signature scheme, called DRS, that is in the round 1 of the NIST post-quantum cryptography project. In this work, we propose yet another statistical attack and demonstrate a weakness of the DRS scheme: one can recover some partial information of the secret key from sufficiently many signatures. One difficulty is that, due to the DRS reduction algorithm, the relation between the statistical leak and the secret seems more intricate. We work around this difficulty by training a statistical model, using a few features that we designed according to a simple heuristic analysis. While we only recover partial secret coefficients, this information is easily exploited by lattice attacks, significantly decreasing their complexity. Concretely, we claim that, provided that 100000 signatures are available, the secret key may be recovered using BKZ-138 for the first set of DRS parameters submitted to the NIST. This puts the security level of this parameter set below 80-bits (maybe even 70-bits), to be compared to an original claim of 128-bits. Furthermore, we review the DRS v2 scheme that is proposed to resist above statistical attack. For this countermeasure, while one may not recover partial secret coefficients exactly by learning, it seems feasible to gain some information on the secret key. Exploiting this information, we can still effectively reduce the cost of lattice attacks.

Anionic redox in positive electrode materials in Li-ion batteries provides an additional redox couple besides conventional metal redox, which can be harvested to further boost the energy density of current Li-ion batteries. However, the requirement for the reversible anionic redox activity remains under debate, hindering the rational design of new materials with reversible anionic redox. In this work, we employed differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) to monitor the release of oxygen and to quantify the reversibility of the anionic redox of Li2Ru0.75M0.25O3 (M = Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ru, Sn, Pt, Ir) upon first charge. X-ray absorption spectroscopy, coupled with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, show that various substituents have a minimal effect on the nominal metal redox, yet more ionic substituents and reduced metal-oxygen covalency introduce irreversible oxygen redox, accompanied with easier distortion of the M-O octahedron and a smaller barrier for forming an oxygen dimer within the octahedron. Therefore, a strong metal-oxygen covalency is needed to enhance the reversible oxygen redox. We proposed an electron-phonon-coupled descriptor for the reversibility of oxygen redox, laying the foundation for high-throughput screening of novel materials that enable reversible anionic redox activity. The Palaemonid shrimp Palaemon macrodactylus is widely distributed in coastal areas and estuaries which are easily contaminated by various pollutants. However, the responses of this species to environmental toxicants are not well described. In the present study, adult individuals of P. macrodactylus were exposed to gradient concentrations of Cadmium (Cd) to evaluate its acute toxic effects, including bioaccumulation, induced oxidative stress and changed energy metabolism in this species. The medium lethal concentration (LC50) of Cd at 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, and 96 h were 2.60, 0.88, 0.49 and 0.37 mg/L, respectively. Cd bioaccumulations in tissues of shrimp increased in a concentration-dependent manner, and higher concentration (50% 96 h-LC50, 0.185 mg/L) of Cd exposure led to a maximum increase of Cd concentration by 14.8, 145.5 and 15.8 folds in gill, hepatopancreas and abdominal muscle. Cd exposure caused a significant inhibition on the activity of catalase (CAT), and total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD), decrease in the total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), and an increase of malonadehyde (MDA) content, which indicated a damage to the antioxidant system of shrimp. Meanwhile, Cd exposure also led to a significant up-regulation in the expression level of metallothionein gene (MT), and down-regulations at the mRNA level of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) and CAT. Moreover, Cd exposure significantly inhibited the oxygen consumption rate (22%), and increased the ammonia excretion rate (43%), hence lead to a significant decrease of the O:N ratio (45%) in shrimp. The results indicated that Cd exposure could induce obvious oxidative stress, energy metabolic dysfunction and bioaccumulation of Cd in P. macrodactylus. The data obtained from the present study would provide useful information for further understanding on the toxicological mechanism of Cd to crustaceans in coastal areas and estuaries.

Agroforestry is the practice of integrating woody vegetation with crops and/or livestock production in order to strengthen ecological services on farmland and achieve a more multi-functional agricultural system. Crop yields determine economic outcomes when trees are young, but information on yields is scattered in the literature and a quantitative overview of crop yields in European agroforestry systems is lacking. We therefore synthesized published information on crop yields in European agroforestry systems, using meta-analysis. A systematic review of the literature was conducted, highlighting quantitative information on yields is available only for traditional Dehesa systems in Spain and Portugal and for modern alley cropping experiments, mostly in northern Europe. Relative cereal crop yields in alley cropping systems (systems with tree rows with interspersed crop strips) were 96% of sole crop yield at tree planting. Crop yields in alley cropping decreased on average with 2.6% per year over the first 21 years of the tree stand, indicating increasing competitive effects of the trees with their age. On the other hand, studies in traditional Dehesa and Montado systems in Southern Europe showed no negative influence of the trees on crop production, indicating that competition between crops and trees plays a less important role in those systems than in alley cropping. Overall, the systematic review showed a need for more experimental data to further substantiate the benefits of agroforestry and elucidate optimal agroforestry practices under European conditions.

Significance The monomer sequence dictates the structure and properties of natural polymers. Such a structure–property relationship is well known for polypeptides and polynucleotides but not for polysaccharides, the most abundant biopolymers on Earth. Here, we establish the structure–property relationship for a polysaccharide at the atomic level by determining molecular flexibility of carbohydrate chains with defined sequences. The chain flexibility can be engineered one linkage at a time by chemical substitution and conformation change, highlighting how the primary and secondary structures of a carbohydrate dictate its flexibility—a critical observable in the de novo design of carbohydrate materials. Our approach can be extended to establish the structure–property relationship at the atomic level of any molecule that can be electrosprayed., Correlating the structures and properties of a polymer to its monomer sequence is key to understanding how its higher hierarchy structures are formed and how its macroscopic material properties emerge. Carbohydrate polymers, such as cellulose and chitin, are the most abundant materials found in nature whose structures and properties have been characterized only at the submicrometer level. Here, by imaging single-cellulose chains at the nanoscale, we determine the structure and local flexibility of cellulose as a function of its sequence (primary structure) and conformation (secondary structure). Changing the primary structure by chemical substitutions and geometrical variations in the secondary structure allow the chain flexibility to be engineered at the single-linkage level. Tuning local flexibility opens opportunities for the bottom-up design of carbohydrate materials.

The molecular level description of carbohydrate assemblies is hampered by their structural complexity and the lack of suitable analytical methods. Here, we employed systematic chemical modifications to identify key non‐covalent interactions that triggered the supramolecular assembly of a disaccharide model. While some modifications disrupted the supramolecular organization, others were tolerated, delivering important information on the aggregation process. The screening identified new geometries, including nanotubes, and twisted ribbons that were characterized with electron tomography and electron diffraction (ED) methods. This work demonstrates that the combination of synthetic chemistry and ED methods is a powerful tool to draw correlations between the molecular structure and the nanoscale architecture of carbohydrate assemblies., Site‐specific modifications identified key non‐covalent interactions responsible for the supramolecular assembly of a disaccharide model. Electron diffraction (ED) and tomography enabled the correlation between molecular structure and nanoscale architecture, confirming that C−H⋅⋅⋅π edge‐to‐face type interactions between the aromatic rings and water‐bridged hydrogen bonds between specific hydroxyl groups stabilized the assembly. The synthetic compounds were used to generate carbohydrate‐based nanotubes, twisted ribbons, as well as spherical particles that were characterized with molecular level resolution.

In this work, we present a person localization system based on ground vibration caused by walking persons. The system is designed for production plants and large buildings to track the movement of workers. Position and movement in these settings are especially safety-relevant in emergencies. Our approach is privacy-preserving, because it requires neither video nor sound. Instead, piezo sensors on the floor measure vibrations, which are analyzed with machine learning to derive a person's position from the vibration signals. This way, our system can determine where a person is moving, but it is not straightforward to attach names to the detected persons. Due to the anisotropic characteristic of the ground vibration wave, classical analysis methods are not applicable. We show that a deep learning-based approach is feasible. Although vegetation restoration plays an important role in the management of surface runoff and soil erosion, the large-scale restoration of vegetation can increase water consumption and reduce surface water resources, thus affecting the health of river ecosystems. Therefore, vegetation restoration should aim to achieve a vegetation landscape pattern that optimizes protection of soil resources while limiting water consumption. This study established field runoff plots with different landscape patch types, including bare land, S-road patches, strip patches, grid patches, and random patches, as well as different quantities patches of 5, 10, 15, and 20. An artificial rainfall experiment was conducted to determine the effect of different vegetation patches in reducing runoff and sediment, and the relationship between the types and number of vegetation patches and hydrodynamic parameters. The results showed that the runoff yields of the four vegetation patch types decreased by 16.1&ndash, 48.7% compared with that of bare land, whereas sediment yields decreased by 42.1&ndash, 86.5%. In addition, the resistance coefficients of the poorly connected patch patterns, including strip patches, grid patches, and random patches, ranged between 0.2&ndash, 1.17 times higher than that of the well-connected S-road patch pattern, and the stream power decreased by 33.3&ndash, 50.7%. Under a set vegetation coverage rate, an increase in the number of vegetation patches resulted in a significant reduction in runoff velocity, runoff yield, and sediment yield, increases in surface roughness and flow resistance, and reductions in runoff shear force and stream power. Besides, the sensitivity of soil to erosion decreased with an increasing number of the patch in the vegetation landscape, whereas the sensitivities of patch combinations with poor connectivity were lower than those with good connectivity. The results of this study highlight the importance of vegetation patch type and quantity for control of soil erosion.

Enabled by the success in the determination of stable barium (Ba) isotopic compositions in seawater, Ba isotopes have been suggested as a novel tool to study physical and biogeochemical processes in the present and past ocean. However, a better understanding of the fractionation of Ba isotopes during particle-seawater interactions is a prerequisite for such applications. In this study, we use an extensive data set of concentrations and isotopic compositions of dissolved Ba (DBa and δ138BaDBa) and bulk particulate Ba (pBabulk and δ138BapBabulk) collected in the northern South China Sea (NSCS) to constrain Ba isotope fractionation in the upper ocean. Seawater and suspended particle samples for Ba isotope measurements were collected in January 2010 along a transect from the outer shelf to the lower slope. The water column profiles reaching depths of 1000 m are characterized by a general decrease of δ138BaDBa and an increase of DBa with depth. However, δ138BaDBa signatures are essentially constant at +0.6‰ in the upper 150 m of the entire study area. The corresponding δ138BapBabulk, which primarily represents the isotopic compositions of oceanic or excess particulate Ba (pBaxs), is consistently lower than δ138BaDBa but also constant at values of +0.1 to +0.2‰. This suggests that the same Ba isotope fractionation process prevails above 150 m on the NSCS outer shelf and slope resulting in a constant in situ fractionation factor of −0.5‰. This value is consistent with previously reported values of −0.4 to −0.5‰ in the upper 200 m of the open ocean and a lake. Moreover, we observe significant differences of pBaxs distributions from those of particulate calcium, particulate organic carbon and nitrogen, and biogenic silica indicating that passive adsorption onto particles rather than active biological utilization is most likely the primary process inducing Ba isotope fractionation in the upper NSCS. The constant δ138BapBabulk signatures suggest that particulate Ba isotopes integrate reliable information during transformation of DBa to pBaxs and are thus a more robust proxy for total particle fluxes than pBaxs concentrations, which show variable values potentially affected by other processes (e.g., particle sinking and/or zooplankton grazing) and thus reflects “snapshot” processes in the water column. We contend that biological productivity plays only a subordinate role in regulating the surface Ba isotopic composition of bulk suspended particles. The extent to which Ba isotopes may nevertheless be a reliable proxy for present and past export productivity requires further analyses of the δ138Ba signature of specific Ba carriers such as barite throughout the water column and in the sediments.

Knowledge of the distribution and variation of water turbidity directly represent important information related to the marine ecology and multiple biogeochemical processes, including sediment transport and resuspension and heat transfer in the upper water layer. In this study, a neural network (NN) approach was applied to derive the water turbidity using the geostationary ocean color imager (GOCI) data in turbid estuaries of the Yellow River and the Yangtze River. The results showed a good agreement between the GOCI-derived turbidity and in situ measured data with a determination coefficient (R2) of 0.84, root mean squared error (RMSE) of 58.8 nephelometric turbidity unit (NTU), mean absolute error of 25.1 NTU, and mean relative error of 34.4%, showing a better performance than existing empirical algorithms. The hourly spatial distributions of water turbidity in April 2018 suggested that high turbidity regions were distributed in the Yellow River estuary, Yangtze River estuary, Hangzhou Bay, and coastal waters of Zhejiang Province. Furthermore, the relationship between water turbidity and tide were estimated. A defined turbid zone was defined to evaluate the diurnal variations of turbidity, which has subtle changes at different times. Our results showed an inverse relationship between turbidity and tide over six selected stations, i.e., when the value of turbidity is high, then the corresponding tidal height is usually low, and vice versa. The combined effects of tidal height and tidal currents could explain the phenomena, and other factors such as winds also contribute to the turbidity distributions.

The energy absorption of different cell structures for closed-cell aluminum foam-filled Al tubes are investigated through quasi-static compression testing. Aluminum foams are fabricated under different pressures, obtaining aluminum foams with different cell sizes. It is found that the deformation of the foam core is close to the overall deformation, and the deformation band is seriously expanded when the cell size is fined, which leads to the increase of interaction. Results confirm that the foam-filled tubes absorb more energy due to the increase of interaction between the foam core and tube wall when the foaming pressure increases. The energy absorption efficiency of foam-filled tubes can reach a maximum value of 90% when the foam core is fabricated under 0.30 MPa, which demonstrates that aluminum foams fabricated under increased pressure give a new way for the applications of foam-filled tubes in the automotive industry.

The purpose of this research is to propose a real-time, inexpensive, and portable method for measuring water surface velocities, in which a particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) system is developed by using a smartphone device. The system uses the mobile camera to capture the tracer floating on the river surface, whose movement is expected to represent the velocity of the water surface. The recorded tracer images are identified from the background by using the normalized RGB color model. The magnification ratio, which transforms the distance in pixel to the real distance, is estimated by using the pre-specified mobile height from the water surface, or the characteristic length of the tracer. The proposed system is built based on the iPhone 6s device. The system is tested in two cases. One case is the artificially generated images recording the movement of table tennis, and the relative error does not exceed 3%. The other is the comparison to the velocity measured by acoustic doppler current profilers (ADCP) in the river, and the relative error is not more than 15%. Finally, the limitation of the proposed method is discussed.
