As the era of sixth-generation (6G) communications approaches, there will be an unprecedented increase in the number of wireless internet-connected devices and a sharp rise in mobile data traffic. Faced with the scarcity of spectrum resources in traditional communication networks and challenges such as rapidly establishing communications after disasters, this study leverages unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to promote an integrated multi-hop communication system combining free-space optical (FSO) communication, terahertz (THz) technology, and intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). This innovative amalgamation capitalizes on the flexibility of UAVs, the deployability of IRS, and the complementary strengths of FSO and THz communications. We have developed a comprehensive channel model that includes the effects of atmospheric turbulence, attenuation, pointing errors, and angle-of-arrival (AOA) fluctuations. Furthermore, we have derived probability density functions (PDFs) and cumulative distribution functions (CDFs) for various switching techniques. Employing advanced methods such as Gaussian–Laguerre quadrature and the central limit theorem (CLT), we have calculated key performance indicators including the average outage probability, bit error rate (BER), and channel capacity. The numerical results demonstrate that IRS significantly enhances the performance of the UAV-based hybrid FSO/THz system. The research indicates that optimizing the number of IRS elements can substantially increase throughput and reliability while minimizing switching costs. Additionally, the multi-hop approach specifically addresses the line-of-sight (LoS) dependency limitations inherent in FSO and THz systems by utilizing UAVs as dynamic relay points. This strategy effectively bridges longer distances, overcoming physical and atmospheric obstacles, and ensures stable communication links even under adverse conditions. This study underscores that the enhanced multi-hop FSO/THz link is highly effective for emergency communications after disasters, addressing the challenge of scarce spectrum resources. Detecting road cracks is essential for inspecting and assessing the integrity of concrete pavement structures. Traditional image-based methods often require complex preprocessing to extract crack features, making them challenging when dealing with noisy concrete surfaces in diverse real-world scenarios, such as autonomous vehicle road detection. This study introduces an image-based crack detection approach that combines a Random Forest machine learning classifier with a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) to address these challenges. Three state-of-the-art models, namely MobileNet, InceptionV3, and Xception, were employed and trained using a dataset of 30,000 images to build an effective CNN. A systematic comparison of validation accuracy across various base learning rates identified a base learning rate of 0.001 as optimal, achieving a maximum validation accuracy of 99.97%. This optimal learning rate was then applied in the subsequent testing phase. The robustness and flexibility of the trained models were evaluated using 6,000 test photos, each with a resolution of 224 × 224 pixels, which were not part of the training or validation sets. The outstanding results, boasting a remarkable 99.95% accuracy, 99.95% precision, 99.94% recall, and a matching 99.94% F1 Score, unequivocally affirm the efficacy of the proposed technique in precisely identifying road fractures in photographs taken on real concrete surfaces. This paper presents a promising solution to address the scarcity of spectrum resources and enhance spectrum efficiency in the context of cognitive radio (CR)-based soft-switching free-space optical (FSO)/terahertz (THz) radio frequency (RF) dual-hop amplify-and-forward (AF)–non-orthogonal multiple access (ROMANO) links. The impact of maximum tolerable interference power in the primary network, transmit power in the secondary transmitter, and maximum relay transmission power on the link are thoroughly studied. The numerical results ultimately validate the effectiveness of this link in improving performance, and a comparative analysis is conducted with the without-CR scheme, highlighting the distinctive characteristics of the proposed link. Metamaterial absorbers have become a popular research direction due to their broad application prospects, such as in radar, infrared imaging, and solar cell fields. Usually, nanostructured metamaterials are associated with a large number of geometric parameters, and traditional simulation designs are time consuming. In this paper, we propose a framework for designing plasma metamaterial absorbers in both a forward prediction and inverse design composed of a primary prediction network (PPN) and an auxiliary prediction network (APN). The framework can build the relationship between the geometric parameters of metamaterials and their optical response (reflection spectra, absorption spectra) from a large number of training samples, thus solving the problem of time-consuming and case-by-case numerical simulations in traditional metamaterial design. This framework can not only improve forward prediction more accurately and efficiently but also inverse design metamaterial absorbers from a given required optical response. It was verified that it is also applicable to absorbers of different structures and materials. A new kind of electron Pearcey‐Gaussian beam (EPGB) with auto‐focusing properties in the presence of an additional magnetic field is introduced, which is composed of the multiplication of the Pearcey function and the Gaussian function. The closed‐form expressions of the EPGBs are obtained. Based on different initial transverse velocities, different dynamics of the EPGBs are presented. In this paper, we propose a mixed radio frequency (RF)/free space optical (FSO) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication system, based on modulating retro-reflector (MRR) and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), which adopts the hybrid L-ary pulse position modulation-binary phase shift keying-subcarrier intensity modulation (L-PPM-BPSK-SIM). More specifically, the RF channel follows Rayleigh distribution, while the FSO channel obeys Gamma–Gamma distribution that considers atmospheric turbulence and pointing error. For decode-and-forward (DF) relay, the MRR is installed on the UAV to reduce its weight, size, and power consumption. In particular, the RIS is used as user terminal along with the RF signal generator to achieve signal enhancement. Based on this, closed expressions for the outage probability, average bit error rate (BER) and average channel capacity of the end-to-end uplink and downlink are derived. Numerical results confirm that while the relay limitation is solved by MRR, RIS significantly reduces the outage probability and average BER as well as obviously increases the average channel capacity. Furthermore, the hybrid L-PPM-BPSK-SIM with average symbol length greater than eight can effectively improve the average BER performance of the system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The theoretical relationship between nonlinear distortions and all optical sidebands (OSBs) in phase-modulation microwave photonics link (PM-MPL) is analyzed. Multi-order nonlinear distortions are suppressed using a closed-form solution to calculate the OSBs transmission coefficients to propose a method to highly linearize PM-MPL based on optical spectrum vector manipulation (OSVM). Theoretical expressions of spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) are derived when third-, fifth-, seventh-, and ninth-order nonlinear distortions are suppressed. Experimental results show that third-order intermodulation distortion (IMD3) can be suppressed to increase the overall SFDR from 100.9 dB $\cdot$ Hz $^{2/3}$ for a link without nonlinear compensation to 122.0 dB $\cdot$ Hz $^{6/7}$ for a link with the compensation applied.
