The controlled vocabularies of five major health-related databases are explored in order to present a partial listing of standardized subject headings for various concepts relating to groups of marginalized persons. Having easy access to these terms could make searching for health information about marginalized persons more efficient for the health information specialist. Persons doing such research can sometimes perceive official vocabulary as being demeaning, outdated, demoralizing, or misleading. Some examples of searching for information concerning marginalized person are shown as well as an Appendix of controlled vocabulary terms specific to the five biomedical databases studied. Objectives: To obtain basic facts and considered opinions from health care professionals and students (nonlibrarian and librarian) about the information needs of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered (GLBT) health care professionals and their interactions with medical librarians. Methods: The survey instrument was a Web-based questionnaire. A nonrandom sample of health care professionals and students (librarian and nonlibrarian) was obtained by posting messages to several large Internet electronic discussion groups (GLBT and general) and to randomly selected members of the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association. A total of 152 forms were analyzed with about 50% of the participants being GLBT persons. Results: GLBT people have specific health information needs and concerns. More than 75% of medical librarians and students believed that GLBT persons have special information needs, with similar response rates by nonlibrarian health professionals and students. The delivery of services needs to be done with privacy and respect for the feelings of the patron. Major areas of need include the topics of health care proxy, cancer, adolescent depression and suicide, adoption, sexual health and practices, HIV infection, surrogate parenting, mental health issues, transgender health issues, intimate partner violence, and intimate partner loss. Conclusions: Most GLBT health care professionals desire GLBT-friendly health information services. Making GLBT-oriented health information resources available on a library Web page and making an effort to show acceptance of cultural diversity through signs or displays would be helpful. Education directed toward instilling an awareness of GLBT persons may also be advisable. This paper discusses the concept of continuing professional development (CPD) within the health sciences and provides an overview of its definition, delivery, necessity to the health professions, accreditation methods and the credentialing of providers. An attempt was made to examine as many fields as possible within the health professions. Selected Internet resources of potential benefit to the hospital librarian in the role of either a provider of reference help in this area or as a provider of an accredited course are listed and briefly discussed. Criteria to help in site evaluation are outlined. A brief listing of materials that provide opportunities for CPD to which a hospital library may subscribe is also provided. A 15-year-old adolescent male with dissecting aortic aneurysm is presented. His young age, lack of predisposing factors, and fulminant course with rapid progression to death precluded a correct antemortem diagnosis. Review of the literature reveals that most instances of dissecting aortic aneurysm in childhood and adolescence are associated with predisposing conditions, especially congenital cardiovascular anomalies. In order to demonstrate the Internet's usefulness in the field of pediatrics, the topic of childhood asthma was selected to demonstrate some methods of accessing information which might be of interest to pediatric health care providers, parents, or interested lay persons. Various methods of searching for relevant information are demonstrated and the Internet facilities of Gopher, listserv, FTP, and World-Wide Web (WWW) are explored.
