The electric polarizability and the spread of the total position tensors are used to characterize the metallic vs insulator nature of large (finite) systems. Finite clusters are usually treated within the open boundary condition formalism. This introduces border effects, which prevent a fast convergence to the thermodynamic limit and can be eliminated within the formalism of periodic boundary conditions. Recently, we introduced an original approach to periodic boundary conditions, named Clifford boundary conditions. It considers a finite fragment extracted from a periodic system and the modification of its topology into that of a Clifford torus. The quantity representing the position is modified in order to fulfill the system periodicity. In this work, we apply the formalism of Clifford boundary conditions to the case of carbon nanotubes, whose treatment results in a particularly simple zigzag geometry. Indeed, we demonstrate that at the Hückel level, these nanotubes, either finite or periodic, are formally equivalent to a collection of non-interacting dimerized linear chains, thus simplifying their treatment. This equivalence is used to describe some nanotube properties as the sum of the contributions of the independent chains and to identify the origin of peculiar behaviors (such as conductivity). Indeed, if the number of hexagons along the circumference is a multiple of three, a metallic behavior is found, namely a divergence of both the (per electron) polarizability and total position spread of at least one linear chain. These results are in agreement with those in the literature from tight-binding calculations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BINARY stars ,TELESCOPES ,INTERFEROMETERS ,GRAVITY ,OBSERVATORIES - Abstract
Context. Dual-field interferometric observations with VLTI/GRAVITY sometimes require the use of a binary calibrator. This is a binary star whose individual components remain unresolved by the interferometer, with a separation between 400 and 2000 mas for observations with the Unit Telescopes (UTs), or 1200–3000 mas for the Auxiliary Telescopes (ATs). The separation vector also needs to be predictable to within 10 mas for a proper pointing of the instrument. Aims. No list of properly vetted calibrators was available so far for dual-field observations with VLTI/GRAVITY on the UTs. Our objective is to compile such a list and make it available to the community. Methods. We identified a list of candidates from the Washington Double Star (WDS) catalogue, all with appropriate separations and brightness, scattered over the southern sky. We observed them as part of a dedicated calibration programme, determined whether these objects were true binaries (excluding higher multiplicities resolved interferometrically, but unseen by imaging), and extracted measurements of the separation vectors. We combined these new measurements with those available in the WDS to determine updated orbital parameters for all our vetted calibrators. Results. We compiled a list of 13 vetted binary calibrators for observations with VLTI/GRAVITY on the UTs, and we provide orbital estimates and astrometric predictions for each of them. We show that our list guarantees that there are always two binary calibrators at least at an airmass < 2 in the sky over the Paranal observatory at any point in time. Conclusions. Any principal investigator wishing to use the dual-field mode of VLTI/GRAVITY with the UTs can now refer to this list to select an appropriate calibrator. We encourage the use of whereistheplanet to predict the astrometry of these calibrators, which seamlessly integrates with p2Gravity for VLTI/GRAVITY dual-field observing material preparation. With four companions at separations from 16 to 71 au, HR 8799 is a unique target for direct imaging, presenting an opportunity for a comparative study of exoplanets with a shared formation history. Combining new VLTI/GRAVITY observations obtained within the ExoGRAVITY program with archival data, we performed a systematic atmospheric characterisation across all four planets. We explored different levels of model flexibility to understand the temperature structure, chemistry, and clouds of each planet using both petitRADTRANS atmospheric retrievals and fits to self-consistent radiative–convective equilibrium models. Using Bayesian model averaging to combine multiple retrievals (a total of 89 across all four planets), we find that the HR 8799 planets are highly enriched in metals, with [M/H] ≳1, and have stellar to superstellar atmospheric C/O ratios. The C/O ratio increases with increasing separation from 0.55
−0.10 +0.12 for d to 0.78−0.04 +0.03 for b, with the exception of the innermost planet, which has a C/O ratio of 0.87 ± 0.03. Such high metallicities are unexpected for these massive planets, and challenge planet-formation models. By retrieving a quench pressure and using a disequilibrium chemistry model, we derive vertical mixing strengths compatible with predictions for high-metallicity, self-luminous atmospheres. Bayesian evidence comparisons strongly favour the presence of HCN in HR 8799 c and e, as well as CH4 in HR 8799 c, with detections at > 5σ confidence. All of the planets are cloudy, with no evidence of patchiness. The clouds of c, d, and e are best fit by silicate clouds lying above a deep iron cloud layer, while the clouds of the cooler HR 8799 b are more likely composed of Na2 S. With well-defined atmospheric properties, future exploration of this system is well positioned to unveil further details of these planets, extending our understanding of the composition, structure, and formation history of these siblings. This paper reviews the phosphate phases in meteorites and those measured by landed spacecraft, what they reveal about past igneous and aqueous conditions on Mars, and important implications for potential prebiotic chemistry, past habitability, and potential biosignatures that could be detected in samples returned from Mars. A review of the 378 martian meteorites as of 2023 indicate that of the two most common phosphate minerals in Mars meteorites, merrillite and apatites, the apatite composition is largely F- and Cl-rich, with shergottites containing more OH. The phosphate concentrations examined across multiple missions show a relatively narrow range of phosphate, with higher concentrations observed in the Mount Sharp Group in Gale crater and Wishstone at Gusev crater and lower concentrations observed at Jezero crater floor and Jezero fan. Possible secondary phosphates detected on Mars, including Fe phosphates at Jezero crater and Gusev crater and Ca- and Al-bearing secondary phosphates, temperatures of formation of secondary phases and their dissolution rates and solubilities are reviewed and summarized. Despite this wealth of information about phosphates on Mars, due to their fine scale and relatively low concentrations, Mars Sample Return is needed to better understand phosphate and its implications for the igneous, aqueous, and astrobiological history of Mars. The detection of low-mass planets orbiting the nearest stars is a central stake of exoplanetary science, as they can be directly characterized much more easily than their distant counterparts. Here, we present the results of our long-term astrometric observations of the nearest binary M-dwarf Gliese 65 AB (GJ65), located at a distance of only 2.67 pc. We monitored the relative astrometry of the two components from 2016 to 2023 with the VLTI/GRAVITY interferometric instrument. We derived highly accurate orbital parameters for the stellar system, along with the dynamical masses of the two red dwarfs. The GRAVITY measurements exhibit a mean accuracy per epoch of 50−60 ms in 1.5 h of observing time using the 1.8 m Auxiliary Telescopes. The residuals of the two-body orbital fit enable us to search for the presence of companions orbiting one of the two stars (S-type orbit) through the reflex motion they imprint on the differential A–B astrometry. We detected a Neptune-mass candidate companion with an orbital period of p = 156 ± 1 d and a mass of m
p = 36 ± 7 M⊕ . The best-fit orbit is within the dynamical stability region of the stellar pair. It has a low eccentricity, e = 0.1 − 0.3, and the planetary orbit plane has a moderate-to-high inclination of i > 30° with respect to the stellar pair, with further observations required to confirm these values. These observations demonstrate the capability of interferometric astrometry to reach microarcsecond accuracy in the narrow-angle regime for planet detection by reflex motion from the ground. This capability offers new perspectives and potential synergies with Gaia in the pursuit of low-mass exoplanets in the solar neighborhood. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

QUANTUM chemistry ,ELECTRONS ,ENTROPY - Abstract
In this work, we study the Wigner localization of interacting electrons that are confined to a quasi-one-dimensional harmonic potential using accurate quantum chemistry approaches. We demonstrate that the Wigner regime can be reached using small values of the confinement parameter. To obtain physical insight in our results, we analyze them with a semi-analytical model for two electrons. Thanks to electronic-structure properties such as the one-body density and the particle–hole entropy, we are able to define a path that connects the Wigner regime to the Fermi-gas regime by varying the confinement parameter. In particular, we show that the particle–hole entropy, as a function of the confinement parameter, smoothly connects the two regimes. Moreover, it exhibits a maximum that could be interpreted as the transition point between the localized and delocalized regimes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Crops arose from wild ancestors and to understand their domestication it is essential to compare the cultivated species with their crop wild relatives. These represent an important source of further crop improvement, in particular in relation to climate change. Although there are about 58,000 Lens accessions held in genebanks, only 1% are wild.We examined the geographic distribution and genetic diversity of the lentil's immediate progenitor L. orientalis. We used Genotyping by Sequencing (GBS) to identify and characterize differentiation among accessions held at germplasm collections. We then determined whether genetically distinct clusters of accessions had been collected from climatically distinct locations.Of the 195 genotyped accessions, 124 were genuine L. orientalis with four identified genetic groups. Although an environmental distance matrix was significantly correlated with geographic distance in a Mantel test, the four identified genetic clusters were not found to occupy significantly different environmental space. Maxent modelling gave a distinct predicted distribution pattern centred in the Fertile Crescent, with intermediate probabilities of occurrence in parts of Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Morocco, and the south of the Iberian Peninsula with NW Africa. Future projections did not show any dramatic alterations in the distribution according to the climate change scenarios tested. We have found considerable diversity in L. orientalis, some of which track climatic variability. The results of the study showed the genetic diversity of wild lentil and indicate the importance of ongoing collections and in situ conservation for our future capacity to harness the genetic variation of the lentil progenitor. Aims. We aim to investigate the origin of the HI Brγ emission in young stars by using GRAVITY to image the innermost region of circumstellar disks, where important physical processes such as accretion and winds occur. With high spectral and angular resolution, we focus on studying the continuum and the HI Brγ-emitting area of the Herbig star HD 58647. Methods. Using VLTI-GRAVITY, we conducted observations of HD 58647 with both high spectral and high angular resolution. Thanks to the extensive uv coverage, we were able to obtain detailed images of the circumstellar environment at a sub-au scale, specifically capturing the continuum and the Brγ-emitting region. Through the analysis of velocity-dispersed images and photocentre shifts, we were able to investigate the kinematics of the HI Brγ-emitting region. Results. The recovered continuum images show extended emission where the disk major axis is oriented along a position angle of 14°. The size of the continuum emission at 5-σ levels is ~1.5 times more extended than the sizes reported from geometrical fitting (3.69 mas ± 0.02 mas). This result supports the existence of dust particles close to the stellar surface, screened from the stellar radiation by an optically thick gaseous disk. Moreover, for the first time with GRAVITY, the hot gas component of HD 58647 traced by the Brγ has been imaged. This allowed us to constrain the size of the Brγ-emitting region and study the kinematics of the hot gas; we find its velocity field to be roughly consistent with gas that obeys Keplerian motion. The velocity-dispersed images show that the size of the hot gas emission is from a more compact region than the continuum (2.3 mas ± 0.2 mas). Finally, the line phases show that the emission is not entirely consistent with Keplerian rotation, hinting at a more complex structure in the hot gaseous disk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Transition disks have large central cavities that have been resolved by imaging surveys during recent years. Cavities and other substructures in circumstellar disks are often interpreted as signposts to massive companions. Detecting companions at small angular separations is challenging with coronagraphic imaging observations. Aims. We aim to search for stellar and substellar companions in the central regions of transition disks. Such companions could be responsible for the large dust-depleted cavities. We want to determine if these disks might be circumbinary in their nature, similar to the HD 142527 system. Methods. We observed four systems, HD 100453, HD 100546, HD 135344 B, and PDS 70, with the sparse aperture masking mode of VLT/SPHERE, also leveraging the star-hopping method with the adaptive optics system. We extracted the complex visibilities and bispectra from the H2 and H3 imaging data. A binary model was fit to the closure phases to search for companions and estimate detection limits. For validation, we also analyzed four archival datasets of HD 142527 and inferred the orbital elements and atmospheric parameters of its low-mass stellar companion. Results. We have not detected any significant point sources in the four observed systems. With a contrast sensitivity of ≈0.004, we can rule out stellar companions down to ≈2 au and partially explore the substellar regime at separations ≳3–5 au. The analysis of HD 142527 B revealed that its projected orbit is aligned with dust features in the extended inner disk and that the mutual inclination with the outer disk is close to coplanar for one of the two solutions. Atmospheric modeling confirms the low-gravity and slightly reddened spectral appearance (T
eff ≈ 3300 K, log 푔 ≈ 3.7, and AV ≈ 0.7). The inferred and derived bulk parameters (log L* /L0 ≈ −0.65, M* ≈ 0.4 M⊙ , and R* ≈ 1.46 R⊙ ) are in agreement with dynamical constraints and evolutionary tracks. Conclusions. In contrast to HD 142527, we find no evidence that a close-in stellar companion is responsible for the resolved disk features of HD 100453, HD 100546, HD 135344 B, and PDS 70. Instead of a dynamical effect by a stellar companion, the formation of giant planets or even low-mass brown dwarfs could be shaping the innermost environment (≲20 au) of these circumstellar disks, as is the case with the planetary system of PDS 70. VERY large telescopes ,GRAVITY ,BREWSTER'S angle ,GALACTIC center ,POLARIMETRY ,ASTROMETRY ,MIRRORS - Abstract
Aims. The goal of this work is to characterize the polarization effects of the beam path of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) and the GRAVITY beam combiner instrument. This is useful for two reasons: to calibrate polarimetric observations with GRAVITY for instrumental effects and to understand the systematic error introduced to the astrometry due to birefringence when observing targets with a significant intrinsic polarization. Methods. By combining a model of the VLTI light path and its mirrors and dedicated experimental data, we constructed a full polarization model of the VLTI Unit Telescopes (UTs) and the GRAVITY instrument. We first characterized all telescopes together to construct a universal UT calibration model for polarized targets with the VLTI. We then expanded the model to include the differential birefringence between the UTs. With this, we were able to constrain the systematic errors and the contrast loss for highly polarized targets. Results. Along with this paper, we have published a standalone Python package that can be used to calibrate the instrumental effects on polarimetric observations. This enables the community to use GRAVITY with the UTs to observe targets in a polarimetric observing mode. We demonstrate the calibration model with the Galactic Center star IRS 16C. For this source, we were able to constrain the polarization degree to within 0.4% and the polarization angle to within 5° while being consistent with the literature values. Furthermore, we show that there is no significant contrast loss, even if the science and fringe-tracker targets have significantly different polarization, and we determine that the phase error in such an observation is smaller than 1
° , corresponding to an astrometric error of 10 µas. Conclusions. With this work, we enable the use by the community of the polarimetric mode with GRAVITY/UTs and outline the steps necessary to observe and calibrate polarized targets with GRAVITY. We demonstrate that it is possible to measure the intrinsic polarization of astrophysical sources with high precision and that polarization effects do not limit astrometric observations of polarized targets. This article discusses the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) as a diagnostic tool for early detection of cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV) in pediatric heart transplant patients. CAV is a major limitation to graft survival in the long-term after heart transplantation. The study reviewed the medical history and examination findings of 39 patients who underwent heart transplantation in childhood or adolescence. OCT was found to be a safe and valuable method for detecting regional intimal thickening at stages where coronary angiography may not show any abnormalities. Further investigation is needed to determine if earlier adjustment of immunosuppression can impact the course of CAV or graft survival. [Extracted from the article]

Introduction Even though micronutrient deficiency is still a major public health problem, it is still unclear which interventions are most effective in improving micronutrient status. This review therefore aims to summarize the evidence published in systematic reviews on intervention strategies that aim at improving micronutrient status in children under the age of five. Methods We searched the literature and included systematic reviews that reported on micronutrient status as a primary outcome for children of 0-5 years old, had a focus on low or middle income countries. Subsequently, papers were reviewed and selected by two authors. Results We included 4235 reviews in this systematic review. We found that (single or multiple) micronutrient deficiencies in pre-school children improved after providing (single or multiple) micronutrients. However home fortification did not always lead to significant increase in serum vitamin A, serum ferritin, hemoglobin or zinc. Commercial fortification did improve iron status. Cord clamping reduced the risk of anemia in infants up to 6 months and, in helminth endemic areas, anthelminthic treatment increased serum ferritin levels, hemoglobin and improved height for age z-scores. Anti-malaria treatment improved ferritin levels. Discussion Based on our results the clearest recommendations are: delayed cord clamping is an effective intervention for reducing anemia in early life. In helminth endemic areas iron status can be improved by anthelminthic treatment. Anti-malaria treatment can improve ferritin. In deficient populations, single iron, vitamin A and multimicronutrient supplementation can improve iron, vitamin A and multimicronutrient status respectively. While the impact of home-fortification on multimicronutrient status remains questionable, commercial iron fortification may improve iron status., Author(s): M. Campos Ponce [sup.1] , K. Sports medicine ,RC1200-1245 - Abstract
Rare but regularly recurring complications are leading to ongoing regulation of the commercial, non-medical whole-body electromyostimulation (WB-EMS) market. In addition to the revised German Radiation Protection Statutes (NiSV), the Deutsche Industrie Norm (DIN) 33961-5 was recently published with safety policies for WB-EMS application, anchoring both relative and absolute contraindications for WB-EMS for the first time. The purpose of this article is to justify the rationale of contraindications in a commercial setting and to support their consistent application. While the relative contraindicationsappear plausible and uncritical, absolute contraindications for WB-EMS are much more debatable. In fact, some absolute contraindications (e.g. diabetes mellitus) could be safely addressed by WB-EMS at least after careful medical anamnesis and competent, close supervision. However, this requires sound knowledge of WB-EMS on the part of physicians and instructors, low user-trainer ratios and prompt medical care in an emergency. However, considering the multitude of different settings of commercial WB-EMS, in extreme cases with hardly supervised, only video-guided WB-EMS sessions, the necessary accurateness and expertise for safe WB-EMS is not always guaranteed. That there is no mandatory licensing of WB-EMS instructors, the key players in WB-EMS, underscores the concern. Whilst acknowledging the multitude of high-quality suppliers, it is advised thatthe commercial, non-medical WB-EMS sector as a whole to be wary of indications with significantly increased complication potential. Lastly, the mandatory acceptance of the contraindications listed in DIN 33961-5 might be considered as an inevitable step towards preventing overregulation by official authorities.KEY WORDS: Whole-Body Electromyostimulation, DIN 33961-5, Commercial Application, Guideline

GALE Crater (Mars) ,MARTIAN surface ,MARS (Planet) ,MARS rovers ,SULFATE minerals ,MAGNESIUM - Abstract
For the first time on Mars, the crystalline magnesium‐sulfate mineral starkeyite (MgSO4‧4H2O) was definitively identified using the CheMin X‐ray diffraction instrument at Gale crater. At the Canaima drill site, starkeyite along with amorphous MgSO4‧nH2O are among the "polyhydrated Mg‐sulfates" interpreted in orbital reflectance spectra. Mg‐sulfates are good climate indicators as they are very responsive to changes in temperature and relative humidity. We hypothesize that, through evaporation, Mg‐sulfates formed at the end of brine evolution when ion concentrations became saturated and precipitated on the surface or near sub‐surface as either epsomite or meridianiite. These minerals were subsequently dehydrated later to starkeyite and amorphous MgSO4‧nH2O in response to a drier Mars. At Canaima, starkeyite is stable and would form during the warmer Mars summers. Due to very slow kinetics at the low Mars winter temperatures, starkeyite and amorphous MgSO4‧nH2O would be resistant to recrystallize to more hydrous forms and thus likely persist year‐round. During the course of analyses, starkeyite transforms into amorphous MgSO4‧nH2O inside the rover body due to the elevated temperature and greatly reduced relative humidity compared to the martian surface at the Canaima drill site. It is possible that crystalline sulfate minerals existed in earlier samples measured by CheMin but altered inside the rover before they could be analyzed. Starkeyite is most likely prevalent in the subsurface, whereas both starkeyite and amorphous MgSO4‧nH2O are likely present on the surface as starkeyite could partially transform into amorphous MgSO4‧nH2O due to direct solar heating. Plain Language Summary: For the first time on Mars, starkeyite (MgSO4‧4H2O), one of the many possible naturally occurring Mg‐sulfate minerals, has been identified using instruments that determine the mineralogy and chemistry of samples on the Curiosity rover in Gale crater. Minerals form in response to conditions they are subjected to and can be used to infer temperature, pressure, water availability, and other factors that will influence their formation. As such, their presence can be used to help define current and past climate conditions on Mars. When Mg‐sulfate minerals first precipitate from brine that is evaporating on the surface, they form more hydrous varieties. In response to drier conditions, they will recrystallize to Mg‐sulfate forms with less water in them. When Mg‐sulfate minerals are desiccated under extremely dry conditions, they will lose their crystal structure and form an amorphous phase. This occurred inside the rover body during the analysis of the Canaima sample. It is likely that earlier samples may also have contained crystalline Mg‐sulfates but altered to an amorphous phase while in the rover body before analyses could take place. Mg‐sulfate in the subsurface is likely starkeyite but could partially transform on the surface to amorphous MgSO4‧nH2O due to direct solar heating. Key Points: For the first time on Mars, starkeyite (MgSO4‧4H2O) was positively identifiedStarkeyite along with amorphous MgSO4‧nH2O are the "polyhydrated Mg‐sulfates" interpreted in orbital reflectance spectraMg‐sulfate mineralogy serves as an indicator of transition to a drier climate and helps outline the climatic and depositional changes on Mars [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
