This study investigates the impact of no‐till practice on agricultural land values in the United States (US) Midwest. Two county‐level panel data sets—the agricultural census farmland value data and the Iowa Farmland Values Survey data—are separately merged with a novel satellite‐based data set on no‐till adoption rates to achieve the study objective. Based on linear fixed effect econometric models, recently developed "external‐instrument‐free" estimation procedures, and a number of robustness checks, we find that increasing no‐till adoption rates has a statistically significant positive effect on agricultural land values at the county level. Results from the empirical analysis support the notion that economic and environmental benefits from adopting soil conservation practices, such as no‐till, are likely capitalized into higher farmland values. Purpose: This paper quantifies the effects of recent Federal Reserve interest rate changes, specifically recent hikes and cuts in the federal funds rate since 2015, on Midwest farmland values. Design/methodology/approach: The authors apply three autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) models to a panel data of state-level farmland values from 1963 to 2018 to estimate the dynamic effects of interest rate changes on the US farmland market. We focus on the I-states, Lakes states and Great Plains states. The models in the study capture both short-term and long-term impacts of policy changes on land values. Findings: The authors find that changes in the federal funds rate have long-lasting impacts on farmland values, as it takes at least a decade for the full effects of an interest rate change to be capitalized in farmland values. The results show that the three recent federal funds rate cuts in 2019 were not sufficient to offset the downward pressures from the 2015–2018 interest rate hikes, but the 2020 cut is. The combined effect of the Federal Reserve's recent interest rate moves on farmland values will be positive for some time starting in 2022. Originality/value: This paper provides the first empirical quantification of the immediate and long-run impacts of recent Federal Reserve interest rate moves on farmland values. A substantial increase in electricity demand has triggered a rising investment in energy infrastructure in the US over the last decade. This paper examines the capitalization effects of electricity transmission lines (TMLs) on nearby farmland values and housing prices in the Midwest from 2015 to 2019, based on 16,026 parcel-level farmland sales data from FarmlandFinder and 1,905,280 housing transaction data from the Zillow Transaction and Assessment Dataset database. Our estimation results reaffirm the disamenity effects of TMLs on housing property values and find that the disamenity effects are larger on houses in urban areas than in rural areas. Nearby TMLs generate premiums for surrounding farmland, which contrasts with the disamenity evidence due to aesthetics (either visual or audible) in the literature. We further show that farmland parcels within 0–2 km of TMLs in high-wind areas are approximately 3.10% more expensive than comparable parcels in low-wind areas.
