Understanding structure/chemistry‐function relationships of active battery materials is crucial for designing higher‐performance batteries, with in situ synchrotron‐based X‐ray powder diffraction widely employed to gain this understanding. Such measurements cannot be performed using a conventional cell, with modifications necessary for the X‐ray diffraction measurement, which unfortunately compromises battery performance and stability. Consequently, these measurements may not be representative of the typical behaviour of active materials in unmodified cells, particularly under more extreme operating conditions, such as at high voltage. Herein, we report a low‐cost, simple, and robust coin‐cell design enabling representative and typical cell performance during in situ X‐ray powder diffraction measurements, which we demonstrate for the well‐known high‐voltage electrode material LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4. In addition to excellent cell stability at high voltage, the modified cell delivered an electrochemical response comparable to the standard 2032‐type coin cell. This work paves an efficient way for battery researchers to perform high‐quality in situ structural analysis with synchrotron X‐ray radiation and will enable further insight into complex electrochemical processes in batteries. Y(btc) (btc = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate) is a metal-organic framework that exhibits significant adsorption of industrially-relevant gases such as H2, CH4, and O2. Previous studies have noted a surprising lack of close interactions between the adsorbed guest molecules and Y, despite the apparent availability of a "bare-metal" binding site. We have extended our previous work in a detailed investigation of the adsorption behaviours of CO2, CD4, and O2 in Y(btc) over a range of concentrations using in situ neutron powder diffraction methods. The O-Y-O bond angles enclosing the bare-metal site are found to change considerably depending on the type and quantity of guest molecules present. Multiple binding sites are found for each guest species, and the largest changes in O-Y-O angles are accompanied by changes in the filling sequences of the binding sites, pointing to an important interplay between guest-induced framework distortions and binding site accessibility. These results suggest the potential for coordinatively flexible rare-earth metal centres to promote guest-selective binding in metal-organic frameworks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Structure-property relations are central to understanding functional materials, and for battery research the use of neutron powder diffraction to reveal the atomistic and molecular-scale origin of battery performance characteristics is often essential. Although operando experiments of this kind are increasingly common as neutron sources and instrumentation advance, these experiments are hindered by the often large barrier presented by the preparation of whole batteries that yield a neutron diffraction signal from the electrode of interest that is sufficient to extract detailed structural information. This article presents a custom battery that is specifically designed for operando neutron powder diffraction. The battery is a pouch type and contains layers of positive and negative electrodes in a parallel-connecting stack. Importantly, the battery can be easily prepared in most laboratories, is configurable, and can be used with both lithium and sodium charge carriers. Metal-organic framework materials (MOFs) have recently been shown in some cases to exhibit strong negative thermal expansion (NTE) behavior, while framework interpenetration has been found to reduce NTE in many materials. Using powder and single-crystal diffraction methods we investigate the thermal expansion behavior of interpenetrated Cu3(btb)2 (MOF-14) and find that it exhibits an anomalously large NTE effect. Temperature-dependent structural analysis shows that, contrary to other interpenetrated materials, in MOF-14 the large positive thermal expansion of weak interactions that hold the interpenetrating networks together results in a low-energy contractive distortion of the overall framework structure, demonstrating a new mechanism for NTE. We used in situ neutron powder diffraction(NPD) to study the migrationof Li in Li4Ti5O12anodes with differentparticle sizes during battery cycling. The motivation of this workwas to uncover the mechanism of the increased capacity of the batterymade with a smaller-particle-sized anode. In real time, we monitoredthe anode lattice parameter, Li distribution, and oxidation stateof the Ti atom, and these suggested an increase in the rate of Liincorporation into the anode rather than a change in the migrationpathway as a result of the particle size reduction. The lattice ofthese anodes during continuous lithiation undergoes expansion followedby a gradual contraction and then expansion again. The measured latticeparameter changes were reconciled with Li occupation at specific siteswithin the Li4Ti5O12crystal structure,where Li migrates from the 8ato 16csites. Despite these similar Li-diffusion pathways, in larger-particle-sizedLi4Ti5O12the population of Li atthe 16csite is accompanied by Li depopulation fromthe 8asite, which is in contrast to the smaller-particle-sizedanode where our results suggest that Li at the 8asite is replenished faster than the rate of transfer of Li to the16csite. Fourier-difference nuclear density mapsof both anodes suggest that 32esites are involvedin the diffusion pathway of Li. NPD is again shown to be an excellenttool for the study of electrode materials for Li-ion batteries, particularlywhen it is used to probe real-time crystallographic changes of thematerials in an operating battery during charge–discharge cycling. Analysis of in situ neutron powder diffraction data collected for the porous framework material Zn(hba) during gas adsorption reveals a two-stage response of the host lattice to increasing CO2 guest concentration, suggesting progressive occupation of multiple CO2 adsorption sites with different binding strengths. The response of the lattice to moderate CH4 guest concentrations is virtually indistinguishable from the response to CO2, demonstrating that the influence of host–guest interactions on the Zn(hba) framework is defined more strongly by the concentration than by the identity of the guests. The yttrium-based metal–organic framework, Y(btc) (btc = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate), shows moderate uptake of methane (0.623 mmol g−1) and molecular oxygen (0.183 mmol g−1) at 1 bar and 308 K. Neutron powder-diffraction data for the guest-free, CD4-, and O2-loaded framework reveal multiple adsorption sites for each gas. Both molecular guests exhibit interactions with the host framework characterised by distances between the framework and guest atoms that range from 2.83 to 4.81 Å, with these distances identifying interaction most commonly between the guest molecule and the carboxylate functional groups of the benzenetricarboxylate bridging ligand of the host. The structural evolution of the “zero-strain” Li4Ti5O12 anode within a functioning Li-ion battery during charge–discharge cycling was studied using in situ neutron powder-diffraction, allowing correlation of the anode structure to the measured charge–discharge profile. While the overall lattice response controls the “zero-strain” property, the oxygen atom is the only variable in the atomic structure and responds to the oxidation state of the titanium, resulting in distortion of the TiO6 octahedron and contributing to the anode's stability upon lithiation/delithiation. Interestingly, the trend of the octahedral distortion on charge–discharge does not reflect that of the lattice parameter, with the latter thought to be influenced by the interplay of lithium location and quantity. Here we report the details of the TiO6 octahedral distortion in terms of the O–Ti–O bond angle that ranges from 83.7(3)° to 85.4(5)°. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The evolution of the 003 reflection of the layered Li(Ni,Co,Mn)O2 (CGR) and Li(Ni,Co,Al)O2 (NCR) cathodes in commercial 18650 lithium-ion batteries during charge/discharge were determined using in situ neutron powder diffraction. The 003 reflection is chosen as it is the stacking axis of the layered structure and shows the largest change during charge/discharge. The comparison between these two cathodes shows that the NCR cathode exhibits an unusual contraction near the charged state and during the potentiostatic step, where the potentiostatic step is recommended by the manufacturer. This feature is not shown to the same degree by the CGR cathode. The behavior is likely related to the compositions of these cathodes, the amount of Li/Ni site mixing and the presence of Al or Mn. We report novel calcium-substituted perovskite-type solid state electrolyte with nominal composition Li 0.344 Sr 0.433 Ca 0.02 Ta 3/4 Hf 1/4 O 3 , which we compare with Li 3/8 Sr 7/16 Ta 3/4 Hf 1/4 O 3. The compounds were synthesized via solid-state reaction and studied by X-ray and neutron powder diffraction and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Neutron powder diffraction allowed the Li position in the structure to be accurately determined. Calcium-substituted phase showed higher Li-ion conductivity than the analogous calcium-free phase obtained with our synthesis method. High total Li-ion conductivities of 3.6 ± 1.0 × 10−4 S cm−1 (E a = 431 meV) at 30 °C were reached for calcium-substituted phase, and both bulk and grain-boundary conductivities increased compared to that of the calcium-free phase. The same experiment was conducted on Li 0.344 Sr 0.433 Ca 0.02 Ta 3/4 Zr 1/4 O 3 and led to the same conclusion compared to Li 3/8 Sr 7/16 Ta 3/4 Zr 1/4 O 3. Elemental analysis by energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) of Li 0.344 Sr 0.433 Ca 0.02 Ta 3/4 Hf 1/4 O 3 showed the formation of an intermediary phase at grain boundaries, which contained essentially strontium, calcium, and oxygen. To better understand the increased bulk conductivity, neutron diffraction was performed on Li 0.344 Sr 0.433 Ca 0.02 Ta 3/4 Hf 1/4 O 3. The results demonstrate the importance of understanding and controlling the grain boundary composition, as much as the bulk composition, to improve the total ionic conductivity of solid electrolytes. Commercial 18650 lithium ion cells containing a blended positive electrode of layered LiNi 0.5 Mn 0.3 Co 0.2 O 2 and spinel Li 1.1 Mn 1.9 O 4 alongside a graphite negative electrode were stored at various depth-of-discharge (DoD) at 60 °C for 1, 2, 4, and 6 months. After storage, the cells were cycled at C/25 at 25 °C between 2.75 and 4.2 V for capacity determination and incremental capacity analysis (ICA). In addition to ICA analysis, the mechanism for capacity fade was investigated by combining the results of neutron powder diffraction under in-situ and operando conditions, in conjunction with post-mortem studies of the electrodes using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction and inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. Among the cells, those stored at 25% DoD suffered the highest capacity fade due to their higher losses of active Li, NMC, and LMO than cells stored at other DoD. The cells stored at 0% DoD shows second high capacity fade because they exhibit the highest of active LMO and graphite anode among the stored cells and higher losses of active Li and NMC than cells stored at 50% DoD. The mechanism of capacity fade of the Li2MnO3·LiMO2 (M = Li, Ni, Co, Mn) composite positive electrode within a full cell was investigated using a combination of operando neutron powder diffraction and transmission X-ray microscopy methods, enabling the phase, crystallographic, and morphological evolution of the material during electrochemical cycling to be understood. The electrode was shown to initially consist of 73(1) wt % R3m LiMO2 with the remaining 27(1) wt % C2/m Li2MnO3 likely existing as an intergrowth. Cracking in the Li2MnO3·LiMO2 electrode particle under operando microscopy observation was revealed to be initiated by the solid-solution reaction of the LiMO2 phase on charge to 4.55 V vs Li+/Li and intensified during further charge to 4.7 V vs Li+/Li during the concurrent two-phase reaction of the LiMO2 phase, involving the largest lattice change of any phase, and oxygen evolution from the Li2MnO3 phase. Notably, significant healing of the generated cracks in the Li2MnO3·LiMO2 electrode particle occurred during subsequent lithiation on discharge, with this rehealing being principally associated with the solid-solution reaction of the LiMO2 phase. This work reveals that while it is the reduction of lattice size of electrode phases during charge that results in cracking of the Li2MnO3·LiMO2 electrode particle, with the extent of cracking correlated to the magnitude of the size change, crack healing is possible in the reverse solid-solution reaction occurring during discharge. Importantly, it is the phase separation during the two-phase reaction of the LiMO2 phase that prevents the complete healing of the electrode particle, leading to pulverization over extended cycling. This work points to the minimization of behavior leading to phase separation, such as two-phase and oxygen evolution, as a key strategy in preventing capacity fade of the electrode.
